Bordeaux Bike Tours

Bordeaux is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in Europe, with wide paths alongside the river, cycle routes and polite drivers. Explore the city by bike as you pedal between the Place de la Bourse, the 11 th -century Bordeaux Cathedral and the impressive wine museum, Cité du Vin. The city has plenty of fabulous restaurants and wine bars to choose from that will whet your appetite for the surrounding vineyards.

Cycle between the world-renowned vineyards on the left and right bank, tasting world-class Saint-Émilion reds, sweet white wine in Sauternes and dry white wine in Entre Deux Mers. The best time to visit the wineries are between May and early September, before the Autumn harvest. Combine your visit to the vineyards with Arcachon, a stunning sea-side town famous for its oyster production. The oysters are perfectly complemented with crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from the Bordeaux region. From here, pedal to the attractive villas of the Ville d’Hiver then continue through pine forests to the Dune du Pilat. As it is the tallest sand dune in Europe, it affords incredible views over the Atlantic Sea.

Bordeaux FAQs

Before you arrive our Destination Managers will get in touch by SMS or email to introduce themselves and to arrange your welcome meeting. If you’ve booked travel through us, your private transfer will meet you at your arrival point and take you to your first hotel. Once here, your Destination Manager will get you set up on your bicycles and talk you through your holiday, paying particular attention to your routes and navigation. If you are travelling independently, please advise us of your estimated time of arrival and our representative will meet you at a convenient time at your first hotel.

Your Destination Manager is your point of contact in the destination. They are responsible for making sure that your holiday runs smoothly, to solve any issues that arise, and to share their local knowledge with you. They are your bike mechanic, luggage transfer driver and tourist information office all rolled into one, and are on hand for the duration of your trip.

Our bikes in this region will come with a pannier bag and a handy pack containing tools such as a puncture repair kit and lock. Helmets are available but please let us know if you’d like to be provided with one before you travel.

You do not have to follow the recommended routes, but we suggest that you do. We plan our routes to take you on our favourite roads in this region and to take you to your destination via the best towns, villages and attractions. That said, you are certainly welcome to go your own way, and your Destination Manager will be happy to help you plan a ride to suit your needs.

Helmets are required by French law for children under 12 years old. We strongly encourage all of our guests to wear a cycle helmet. A good quality helmet will reduce the risk of head injury in the event of an accident. For comfort, we suggest that guests bring their own helmet if possible, but we do have some available which can be requested in advance.

Biking in Bordeaux: A Cycling Tour of La Perle d’Aquitaine

Pick up a V3 rental bike to begin exploring Bordeaux on two wheels

With much of the city made up of picturesque cobbled streets, and designated bike lanes allowing cyclists to escape the rat race, Bordeaux is best explored by bike. This cycle itinerary takes you on a tour of some of the city’s most memorable sights.

Cycling is a cost-effective and sustainable way of exploring Bordeaux

Experiencing Bordeaux by bike as a visitor is both convenient and enjoyable, with plentiful options for bike rental and little need to step foot on a crowded bus or tramway. Chris Cooley, co-owner of Musette Bicycles and Coffee shop, shared his perfect route for soaking up Bordeaux by bicycle. This itinerary takes in the Gothic Saint-André Cathedral, the Basilica of Saint-Michel and the vibrant Capucins Market.

Renting a bike

Bordeaux’s public bike rental service, V3 , offers a hassle-free and cost-efficient way to cycle around the city. With 1,700 bikes stationed around Bordeaux, V3 simply requires online registration – then you’re ready to grab a bike and go. The first half an hour is free each time you use a V3 bike, after which it costs €2 (£1.85) per hour. Alternatively, hire a bike from Esprit Cycles – a conveniently placed bike shop at Gambetta where service is friendly and the bikes of decent quality. Rentals start at €15 (£13.75) per day, with the option to book online too.

Admire the Cathédrale Saint-André

Once you’ve picked up a bike (this works perfectly if you hired one from Esprit Cycles), start the tour by passing Cathédrale Saint-André, one of Bordeaux’s most impressive architectural monuments . Also known as Bordeaux Cathedral, this Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Andrew is admired for its Gothic style and freestanding bell tower, which can be seen from afar. For a closer look, enter the church and absorb the religious scenes and imposing gargoyles that are intricately sculpted around the doorway and walls.

Fuel up at Musette Bicycles and Coffee

To get you in the cycling spirit and ready for a day on two wheels, swing by Musette Bicycles and Coffee . Offering speciality coffee and delicious homemade cakes, this spot is perfect for a light breakfast, or a more substantial vegetarian brunch on Saturdays, to fuel you for a day exploring Bordeaux. At Musette, staff are experts in the field of coffee and bikes, so don’t forget to pick up any insider cycling tips before setting off on your bike for the afternoon.

Get lost in the Capucins Market

Just a stone’s throw away from Musette lies the bustling Capucins Market. Here you’ll find row after row of market stalls, selling everything from fresh flowers and fruit to vegetables and the region’s finest meats and cheeses. Pick up some local French produce (in preparation for an evening picnic) and absorb a truly authentic experience at one of Bordeaux’s best traditional French markets .

The Capucins Market is a great place to pick up fresh produce and supplies for a picnic

Soak up the history of Bordeaux’s old town

As you cycle from the Capucins Market, glide in and out of the narrow streets and through the old town. Be sure to stop by the Basilica of Saint-Michel to admire more ornate Gothic architecture and a second vibrant market that surrounds the church. This time you’ll find items such as antiques, bric-a-brac and work by local artists.

While exploring the old town, the Place de la Bourse is a must-see square which is (quite literally) dripping in French culture and history. Designed by Louis XV’s favourite architect, Jacque Jules Gabriel, the square’s magnificent architecture and prime location, just next to the Garonne River, makes it a picture-perfect scene. Don’t miss the Miroir d’Eau , which reflects a spectacular, symmetrical mirror image in the shallow water pool opposite – framing the best photo op in the city!

The Place de la Bourse is best known for the Miroir d’Eau

After snapping the perfect shot, hop back on your bike and head over the beautiful Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge). Commissioned by Napoleon, the Pont de Pierre has 17 spans (which is the same number of letters as Napoleon Bonaparte) and was the first ever stone bridge built in Bordeaux. Today it is one of many bridges along the Garonne River, but for close to 150 years the Pont de Pierre was the only bridge that connected the centre of Bordeaux on the left bank and La Bastide district on the right bank.

Discover modern Bordeaux

After taking in the history of the old town, it’s time to take a ride on the modern side of Bordeaux. Continue along the right bank of the river until you reach the city’s counterculture and hipster hangout spot, Darwin .

Darwin is a sustainable ecosystem built in a former barracks, adorned with reworked furniture and other recycled materials. Creative expression is at the heart of this popular hangout space, as an open-air graffiti gallery and vibrant skate park offer eclectic bursts of colour to the otherwise mellow, calm atmosphere. Grab a beer from Darwin’s hip bar and restaurant, Magasin Général, and sit back for a moment in the sunshine. Darwin also hosts exhibitions and events, so have a wander before jumping back on your bike.

Darwin is among Bordeaux’s hippest hangout spots

Next, follow the dedicated cycle path along the river and cross back over to the left bank via Europe’s largest vertical lift bridge, the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas.

Immerse yourself in world wines at the Cité du Vin

Once you’ve crossed the Jacques Chaban-Delmas bridge, make a beeline for the Cité du Vin – notable for its uber-modern architecture. Earning the title as Bordeaux’s most famous wine museum , the Cité du Vin is a wine lover’s dream. Inside, visitors explore the world of wine through workshops and exhibitions, with a ticket to the permanent exhibition also granting access to the museum’s wine-tasting bar. The Belvedere is located on the eighth floor and overlooks the entire city – the panoramic views, world-class wines and spectacular architecture make this spot well worth a visit when in Bordeaux. Don’t forget to pick up a bottle of wine from the museum’s wine shop, as next on the agenda is a picnic in the park.

Explore the Jardin Public and have dinner al fresco

From the Cité du Vin, follow the Garonne River and see the vibrant riverside life along the Quai des Marques. Continue past Skate Park Colbert and the Quai des Chartrons before turning right and into the Jardin Public for a well-deserved picnic and glass of wine in the park.

With abundant wildlife and scenic views over the lake, the Jardin Public is a blissful spot to enjoy a relaxing picnic after an active day of cycling. Indulge in the local produce that you picked up earlier at the Capucins Market and savour every last drop of the Bordeaux wine you bought at Cité du Vin.

The Jardin Public is one of Bordeaux’s most beloved green spaces

End the day with cocktails at Le CanCan

As the sun goes down and the day draws to an end, return your bike (if hired) and walk over to Le CanCan for an unforgettable soirée of unique cocktails. A hidden gem on the Bordeaux bar scene, this spot takes customers on a journey from a calm and quaint side street to a vibrant retro speakeasy bar. Ask the bar staff for advice when choosing a cocktail; their house collection is carefully curated with passion and expertise.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

5 REASONS TO DISCOVER BORDEAUX

Saint-André Cathedral

It is a unique gothic church, where famous weddings such as the union between Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII were held. It is often compared in size and style to the magnificent Notre-Dame in Paris . The cathedral’s north doorway is one of its finest features, having been richly decorated with exquisite sculptures depicting such events as the Last Supper and the Ascension.

The Big Bell

This bell dates back to the medieval times. It is the last remnant of the ramparts of the city . It was also used as a prison that some would call “The Gold Lion Hotel” because it has the symbol of England’s kings: a golden lion as a weathervane on the central dome. The bell itself weighs about 7750 kg!

Rue Sainte Catherine

Ste Catherine Street is the longest and main shopping street in Bordeaux. It’s a pedestrian street crossing the historic center of the city and links the Place de la Comédie where you can find the “Grand Théâtre” to the Place de la Victoire , with its cafés and shops it is the heart of Bordeaux.

Saint Emilion

The town was named after the monk Emilion , who lived there as a hermit in the 8th century. Meander through this medieval village, and discover its culture and history. You will be able to visit the Place du Clocher and climb the steps to the top of the Tour du Roy dating from 1237. From there you will have an amazing view of the legendary vineyards and Romanesque churches.

This French department is named after the Dordogne River , which runs towards Bordeaux and the Gironde estuary . Also known as Perigord, the Dordogne Valley offers lovely cycling on scenic routes, and through medieval towns such as Sarlat or Bergerac. There are even famous prehistorical sites to visit.

Le Bassin , as it’s called by the local people, is a perfect mix between a health care place with a specialisation in balneotherapy , one of the main osticulture center of France and an extraordinary site with La Dune du Pilat which is Europe’s longest and highest dune of sand. So, you will be able to eat oysters contemplating all the arcachon bay (from La dune du Pilat), and finish your day with the best bath you ever had.

BORDEAUX FOOD AND WINE

From Pauillac to St Emilion to Pomerol some of the most famous French wines come from Bordeaux and on your trip to Bordeaux and Gironde you will be surrounded by vineyards and Chateaux. You can’t come to this region without going on a wine tour and tasting different Bordeaux wines !

Gironde also offers great food and you will have to try the specialties such as the oysters from the Bassin d’Arcachon or the delicious “cannelés Bordelais” , a small French pastry flavored with rum and vanilla and shaped like a cork.

BORDEAUX geography

Bordeaux is located on the Gironde estuary in the Southwest of France, where the Gironde River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is the center of famous vineyards , between Medoc and Grave and is home to some of the most distinguished wines in the world such as St Emilion or Pomerol.

It is also very close to Dordogne, a French region also known as  Perigord  and famous for its wine and local food delicacies.

BORDEAUX history

From early times until today, the city of Bordeaux has flourished thanks to  wine trade .

Originally a settlement of a Celtic tribe, Bordeaux became the capital of Roman Aquitaine when the Romans ruled the area. In the 12th century, it benefited from the wedding of the Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine with the soon to be King of England, Henry II. Later on and on several occasions, the French government relocated in Bordeaux when Paris was under attack or unsafe.

The city has always played an important part in the history of France, making it culturally rich and very interesting to visit.

You can also find your Alsace wine tour , your Burgundy bike tour or your Champagne bike tour .

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

Welcome to the Dordogne

Meet your guides at the Souillac train station and begin with a bike fitting and safety briefing before our first ride. We’ll warm up along the Dordogne river and follow undulating roads through this densely forested and serene region. Get to know one another at our first lunch, a family-style meal of simply prepared seasonal dishes. Choose to continue riding through ancient Périgord country or transfer directly to our historic hotel in the center of Sarlat. There’s time to explore this storybook town before dinner at a charming restaurant nearby.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Le Roc, Saint-Julien-de-Lampon, Veyrignac, Groléjac, Sarlat Accomplished : 15 miles / 25 km, elevation gain: 1,247 feet/ 380 meters Longer Option : 25 miles / 40 km, elevation gain: 2,000 feet / 610 meters Accommodations : Plaza Madeleine

Canoeing and Castles

After an easy morning spin, we’ll switch gears to see the Dordogne from a different angle: paddle a canoe down the Dordogne river with your gaze lifted to catch the castles and cliff dwellings that line its banks. The middle of the day is spent castle-hopping, beginning with lunch at the 12th-century Castelnaud Castle and followed by a visit to Château des Millandes, known for its meticulous gardens and famous former resident Josephine Baker. After, get back on the bike and ride the rest of the way to Sarlat or let the van bring you there sooner. We may visit a walnut producer to learn about one of the Dordogne’s most prolific products before a romantic farm-to-table meal.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Vitrac, La Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud-Fayrac, Sarlat Accomplished : 11 miles/ 18 km, elevation gain: 918 feet / 280 meters Longer Option : 25 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 2,427 feet / 740 meters Accommodations : Plaza Madeleine

Lascaux Cave

Find your zen on our morning ride into the Domainale Barade forest, a peaceful stretch of shade-giving walnut trees and poetic countryside. You’ll arrive ready to contemplate Lascaux, the cave complex discovered in 1940 that exhibits Cro-Magnon paintings dating back over 17,000 years. Emerge back into the daylight and return to the bike, following the Vézère river to Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère—quite possibly the most idyllic town in all of France. Taste the region’s famed foie gras at lunch, then continue biking or take a lift in the van to our next hotel. Tonight, walk into the petite village of Trémolat for dinner at a typical bistro.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Sarlat-la-Canéda, Montignac, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, Trémolat Accomplished : 23 miles / 37 km, elevation gain: 1,715 feet / 523 meters Longer Option : 46 miles / 75 km, elevation gain: 3,760 feet / 1,146 meters Accommodations : Le Vieux Logis

Wine Versus Wine

Monbazillac’s sweet white wines are the perfect bridge between the Dordogne and our foray into Bordeaux. We’ll get there via the week’s most challenging ride, which travels west through some hilly terrain but eventually gives way to the otherworldly vineyards of Les Landes. At the end of our rewarding descent, a first taste of wine awaits us at Château de Monbazillac—and trust us when we say it poses some serious competition to Bordeaux’s Sauternes. After lunch, ride to the town of Bergerac—our last destination in the Dordogne—then take an hourlong transfer into the heart of Bordeaux. We waste no time in this essential winegrowing region and head straight for Saint-Émilion to meet our friend and wine merchant Benoit. In his underground caveau , we’ll sip the wine that has earned Bordeaux its world renown before dinner on your own in this quaint cobblestone town.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Lalinde, Saint-Capraise-de-Lalinde, Monbazillac, Bergerac Accomplished : 30 miles / 49 km, elevation gain: 1,377 feet / 420 meters Accommodations : Château du Palanquey

Pomerol and Saint-Émilion

Today is all about the world-famous vineyards of Bordeaux. Begin cycling past some of the most prestigious estates in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion: Cheval Blanc, Beau-Séjour Bécot, Pressac, Petrus, and Angélus to name a few. During a wine tasting and lunch at Château de la Dominique, we’ll dip our toe into some right-bank reds from the Saint-Émilion appellation, then hop back in the saddle for the last push to our hotel. A special table is set to celebrate our final evening, and dinner is lovingly prepared using only garden-fresh produce and locally sourced ingredients. The cherry on top is the domaine’s own wine, produced in partnership with Château Angelus—known for their Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Crus.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Pomerol, Bertin, Montagne, Saint-Émilion, Sainte-Colombe Accomplished: 31 miles / 50 km, elevation gain: 176 feet / 537 meters Accommodations: Château du Palanquey

One Last Loop

Take the morning to enjoy a late breakfast, wake at sunrise to swim laps, or seize the opportunity for a final spin through Bordeaux’s sleepy villages and swaying sea of vines. However you choose to spend the last precious moments of your trip, we’ll bring you to the Libourne train station and see you off to your next destination.

Meals:  Breakfast Destinations: Sainte-Colombe, Libourne Accomplished:  14 miles / 22 km, elevation gain: 525 feet / 116 meters

How to Explore Bordeaux Vineyards by Bike

Picture of Polina

Which Bordeaux wine regions can be explored by bike?

The best Bordeaux vineyards to explore by bike are Saint-Emilion , Pomerol ,   Entre-Deux-Mers on the Right Bank, and Margaux on the Left Bank.   You can join a guided bike tour or rent a bike and explore vineyards at your own pace.

Guided Bordeaux vineyard tours on a bike

bike tours bordeaux france

In my experience, most guided bike tours take place in the Saint-Emilion wine region on the Right Bank.  The roads are calmer here and the area is very picturesque with the Medieval town of Saint-Emilion dominating the landscape.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, relax and enjoy  postcard-perfect scenery and a wine tasting on your route.

Guided bike tours of Bordeaux vineyards can be private or in a small group.   Most bike tours in Bordeaux wine country would be on an electric bike.

Some guided tours are  half-day , and others last  7-8 hours with a stop for lunch  at a winery or a picnic lunch.   Visiting the town of Saint-Emilion is most likely going to be on your itinerary.

When booking your bike tour, pay close attention to the starting point.  There are two options – meeting your guide in the wine country or meeting in the city of Bordeaux and traveling by car to hit the trails.

Bordeaux by Bike and Boat

**This tour is no longer operating, please contact us for other tour suggestions.**

Cruise the Dordogne, Garonne and Gironde Rivers and cycle through the French vineyards on carefully chosen routes and experience this region to the fullest!

During this tour you will explore one of the most beautiful, famous and beloved parts of France: The region of Bordeaux, located in sun drenched, south-western part of France is the perfect setting for a bike and boat tour.

Set at the confluence of the Garonne River and the Gironde estuary, it is one of the most prolific and famous wine growing regions in the world. Caressed by Atlantic breezes, the vineyards that cover the rolling hills of the region have for centuries produced France’s most remarkable wines. Appellations such as Saint-Émilion, Pomerol, Sauternes, and Médoc.

Daily cycling tours through these famous wine regions: you will visit many of them and probably taste various excellent wines. Bordeaux does not only offer the finest wines; it is also home to finest, scrumptious, distinct tasting culinary specialties. The cuisine on board is outstanding and menus will include regional specialties, prepared with fresh ingredients. The bar on board offers a wide variety of excellent local wines to enjoy during dinner or simply to taste them during your personal cocktail hour.

At the region's heart, the city of Bordeaux is the cultural center. Once known as the Sleeping Beauty, the UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches along the Garonne river banks, inviting visitors to savor its grand architecture, tempting cafés and shops and superb museums. The probably most bicycle-friendly French city sleeps no more!

Note: This is a self-guided tour, but you have the option to book a guide if you wish. Please see the Dates & Prices tab for Included Services.

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

**This tour is no longer operating, please contact us for other tour suggestions.** Note: This tour runs on opposite weeks from Castets-en-Dorthe or Fronsac/Libourne. Both itineraries are listed below.

Direction: Castets-en-Dorthe – Libourne/Fronsac Apr 9, 23; May 7, 21; Jun 4, 18; Jul 2, 16, 30; Aug 13, 27; Sep 10, 24; Oct 8, 22, 2022

Day 1: Castets-en-Dorthe: embarkation from 3:00pm. Castets-en-Dorthe – Canal des Deux Mers round tour (10 miles/15 km) Individual arrival at 2:00pm in Bordeaux to the mooring location of the boat near the Canal des Deux Mers at Castets-en-Dorthe (optional bus transfer from the train station is possible). The crew is waiting for you, and you will have a first meeting to explain everything there is to know for your cruise.

After you settle in the cabin, you can try your bike and enjoy a short first test bike ride around Castets, exploring this fertile region aptly named "Little Holland" with its walnut trees and kiwi orchards. You can also choose to visit your first castle. In the evening, a welcome cocktail awaits you on board.

Day 2: Castets-en-Dorthe – Sauternes – Loupiac/Cadillac (16-28 miles/27-46 km) After a restful night onboard, you will be ready to discover the Sauternais region by bike, a region where sweet dessert wines are produced. The first town you will discover is the lovely Saint Macaire and its wonderful gate and walls. You'll have an opportunity to visit the former residence of the writer Francois Mauriac as well as have your first wine tasting at a château.

Riding along corn and sunflower fields, you reach La Réole by an Eiffel-style bridge over the Garonne River. This town is famous because in 1190 Richard Lionheart, on his way to the Holy Land, gave the town hall building to thank the locals for their loyalty to the English crown. This historical place holds two castles, an impressive church, and narrow cobblestone streets.

To end the day you will enjoy the bike path along the Canal de la Garonne and its deep blue water, built in Napoleon times. You can either go directly back to the ship or ride to Meilhan-sur-Garonne and the amazing scenery it has to offer. Later, you will sail along the Garonne River to reach Loupiac near the city of Cadillac.

Day 3: Loupiac/Cadillac/Graves – Sauternes round tour (21-32 miles/35-50 km) Today we start by enjoying the view from Sainte-Croix du Mont before having a look at the grave of painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the lovely town of Verdelais. Then the route follows the winding banks of the Ciron River, whose icy waters flow into the warmer waters of the Garonne.

In the autumn, when the climate is warm and dry, the combination of the two different temperatures produce the mist that descends on the vineyards, promoting the perfect conditions for the famous Sauternes wine.

You will pass the famous vineyards of Château d’Yquem, Château Guiraud, Clos Haut Peyraguey, and many others. Cadillac is located in the region of Graves, also known as the birthplace of Bordeaux wines. It is a fortified medieval village known as the Bastide in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region in between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers.

Once back to the boat, you will sail on the Garonne River to the majestic city of Bordeaux. You will enjoy the best panorama of the city: "Port of The Moon" with the "Pont de Pierre," "Place de La Bourse," and the beautiful Quais, which lead to the historical wine merchant area, the Quai des Chartrons, transformed into outlet shops and restaurants. Truly a pleasant place to visit!

Day 4: Bordeaux: Heart of Bordeaux bike tour (10 miles/16 km) Bordeaux is a UNESCO world heritage for a reason. The list of hidden gems is worth seeing: walk into the city via La Porte Cailhau, the royal entrance. We suggest a thorough tour: Bordeaux glows not only because of its individual buildings, but through the grandiose, well preserved old city. The Capuchine Market is worth a visit (perhaps with tastings of wine and oysters) as well as the basilica, the Pont de Pierre, the first bridge of the city, which was built back in the day on Napoleon's orders. You will admire the many squares, the Big Bell of Pey Berlan, the Golden Triangle, the Girondin's column, the Water Mirror, and so much more.

Take time to ride through the newly opened Cité du Vin, Chaban Delmas bridge and Darwin ecosystem, a refurbished factory where you will enjoy the view of the Quais, drinking a good coffee in a tree-filled place.

This is definitely a wonderful city to explore by bike or on foot. You'll have many opportunities for shopping, souvenirs, food and wine tastings. And for bike enthusiasts who want to ride a long loop, the Roger Lapébie’s cycling lane will take you to Créon and Sauveterre-en-Guyenne, in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region.

Day 5: Bordeaux – Lamarque/Lamarque – Margaux (Médoc) round tour (26 miles/42 km) In the morning, the ship will leave Bordeaux for Lamarque, here you will be in the Médoc wine region, one of the most famous ones. You will quickly find yourselves near Château Lamothe Bergeron, Cru Bourgeois du Médoc. Then you'll pass a series of prestigious properties: Maucaillou, Poujeaux, Rauzan Ségla, Palmer, Issan, Prieuré Lichine, Kirwan and last but not least Château Margaux. You have many chances to stop on the road to taste and learn about Grand Crus classification and the wine-making process.

A secondary road is available here as a different loop or an additional one to the first in Margaux. You will reach Pauillac and Saint-Espèphe wine regions. You will ride near Château Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Lynch-Bages, Cos d’Estournel, Pontet Canet, Pichon Longueville and many other Grands Crus Classés wines.

The end of the day is the perfect time for a dining cruise while the boat will cross the Estuary to reach the other bank of Gironde River. We will stop at Bourg-sur-Gironde, a beautiful little town, partially built on a cliff. The old city center allows you to overlook the Estuary.

Day 6: Bourg to Blaye Fortress and vineyards (UNESCO World Heritage Site) round tour (16-32 miles/25-41 km) This region offers hilly landscapes covered with vines and dotted with scattered fairytale chateaux and manor houses. The opportunity to discover very pleasant wines and Châteaux such as Monconseil-Gazin, Eyquem, Marquis de Vauban and others: another good reason to stop and enjoy wine tastings! The Gironde Corniche road is a must-see of this round tour: a calm and beautiful road which divides the beautiful manors on the one side and gardens on the other.

In Blaye, take a loop through the Citadelle of Blaye, a Vauban Fortress built on Louis XIV, the Sun King’s request and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visit underground passages of the Citadelle to understand the whole history of the Fortress. Stop in Plassac where you can visit the Gallo-Roman villa and its associated museum.

Back in Bourg, you can stop at a typical and historical wash house. Water is very refreshing on your face after this biking day!

In the evening, you will cruise to Libourne/Fronsac on the Dordogne River.

Day 7: Libourne/Fronsac, Pomerol, and Saint Émilion vineyards (13-27 miles/21-43 km) Today's exploration will allow you to discover Libourne and the well-known vineyards of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. In Saint-Emilion, you will visit this stunning medieval UNESCO World Heritage village with surrounding vineyards of the same name. Certainly do not miss the Monolithic Church in the center of the town.

Your ride will continue on small picturesque back roads. Along the way, you will see some of the classified and famous Châteaux, such as Angelus and its special bells, Beauséjour, Ausone, Cheval Blanc, La Dominique, Trottevieille, Gaubert, Barde-Haut, Clos La Madeleine, Bel Air Monange, Laroque, Fombrauge, Grand Corbin, Gazin and Petrus, Petit Village, Nenin--some of the world’s most famous wines. A very pleasant road, prestigious Châteaux, wine shopping in Saint-Emilion.

Day 8: Libourne/Fronsac: Disembarkation and (optional) transfer back to Bordeaux After your final breakfast on board, it will be time for a return transfer (optional) to the pre-agreed drop off point in the city center of Bordeaux. Disembarkation between 9:00-9:30am.

Direction: Libourne/Fronsac – Castets-en-Dorthe Apr 16, 30; May 14, 28; Jun 11, 25; Jul 9, 23; Aug 6, 20; Sep 3, 17; Oct 1, 15, 2022

Day 1: Libourne/Fronsac: embarkation from 3:00pm. Optional round tour of Fronsac (7-10 miles /10-15 km) Individual arrival and optional transfer from the meeting point in Bordeaux to the mooring location of the boat in Fronsac on the Dordogne river. The crew is waiting for you and you will have a first meeting to explain everything there is to know for your cruise. After settling into your cabin, you can enjoy a short first test bike ride around the Fronsac area. In the evening, a welcome cocktail awaits you on board.

Day 2: Libourne/Fronsac, Saint Émilion, and Pomerol vineyards round tour (13-27 miles/21-43 km) After a restful night, today's exploration will allow you to discover Libourne, and well-known vineyards of Saint- Emilion and Pomerol. In Saint-Emilion, you will visit this stunning medieval UNESCO World Heritage village, with surrounding vineyards of the same name. Panoramas are unique here. The Monolithic Church in the center of the town is a monument not to be missed.

Your ride will continue on small picturesque back roads. Along the way, you will see some of the classified and famous Châteaux, such as Angelus and its special bells, Beauséjour, Ausone, Cheval Blanc, La Dominique, Trottevieille, Gaubert, Barde-Haut, Clos La Madeleine, Bel Air Monange, Laroque, Fombrauge, Grand Corbin, Gazin and Petrus, Petit Village, Nenin...some of the world’s most famous wines. A very pleasant road, prestigious Châteaux, wine shopping in Saint-Emilion.

Day 3: Bourg – Blaye round tour, plus Blaye Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site) (16-32 miles/25-41 km) This region offers hilly landscapes covered with vines and dotted with scattered fairytale chateaux and manor houses. The opportunity to discover very pleasant wines and Châteaux such as Monconseil-Gazin, Eyquem, Marquis de Vauban and others: another good reason to stop and enjoy a visit and wine tastings!

The Gironde Corniche road is a must-see of this round tour: a calm and beautiful road which split beautiful manors on the one hand, and gardens on the other. In Blaye, take a loop through the Citadelle of Blaye, a Vauban Fortress built on Louis XIV, the Sun King’s request and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visit underground passages of the Citadelle to understand the whole history of the Fortress. Stop in Plassac where you can visit the Gallo- Roman villa and its associative museum.

Back in Bourg, you can stop to the typical and historical wash house. Water is very refreshing on your face after this biking day.

Day 4: Margaux – Médoc round tour (25 miles/42 km) In the morning the ship will leave Bourg for Lamarque, here you will be in the Médoc wine region, one of the most famous in the world. You will quickly find yourselves near Château Lamothe Bergeron, Cru Bourgeois du Médoc, where wine and tourism are quite highlighted. Then, prestigious properties will come one after another: Maucaillou, Poujeaux, Rauzan Ségla, Palmer, Issan, Prieuré Lichine, Kirwan and last but not least Château Margaux. Many chances to stop on your road, taste, learn about Grand Crus classification and learn about winemaking process.

A secondary road is available here as a different loop or an additional one to the first in Margaux. You will reach Pauillac and Saint-Espèphe wine regions. Obviously, you will ride near Château Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Lynch-Bages, Cos d’Estournel, Pontet Canet, Pichon Longueville and many other Grands Crus Classés wines.

Once back to the MS Bordeaux, you will sail on the Garonne River to the majestic city of Bordeaux. You will enjoy the best panorama of the city: “Port of The Moon” with the “Pont de Pierre,” “Place de La Bourse,” and the beautiful Quais which lead to the historical wine merchant area, the Quai des Chartrons, transformed into outlet shops and restaurants...a pleasant place to visit.

Day 5: Bordeaux: Heart of Bordeaux round tour (10 miles/16 km) Bordeaux is a UNESCO world heritage for a reason. The list of buildings, place and hidden gems is worth seeing: Walk into the city via La Porte Cailhau, the royal entrance. We suggest a thorough tour: Bordeaux is a City that doesn’t just glow due to its individual buildings, but through the grandiose, well preserved old city. Worth seeing is the Capuchine Market (perhaps with tastings of wine and oysters), the basilica, the Pont de Pierre, the first bridge of the city, which was built back in the day on Napoleon's orders. You may admire the many squares, the Big Bell of Pey Berlan, the Golden Triangle, the Girondin's column, the Water Mirror...and more. A wonderful city to explore by bike or on foot. Many opportunities for shopping, souvenirs, food and wine tastings.

And for bike challengers who want to ride a long loop, the Roger Lapébie’s cycling lane will take you to Créon and Sauveterre-en-Guyenne, in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region.

Day 6: Graves – Sauternes round tour (21-32 miles/35-50 km) Today we will discover the Sauternes region, where sweet dessert wines are made. We start by enjoying the view from Sainte-Croix du Mont before having a look at the grave of painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in the lovely town of Verdelais. The then route follows the winding banks of the Ciron River, whose icy waters flow into the warmer waters of the Garonne. In the autumn, when the climate is warm and dry, the combination of the two different temperatures produce the mist that descends on the vineyards, promoting the perfect conditions for the famous Sauternes wine.

You will pass the famous vineyards of Château d’Yquem, Château Guiraud, Clos Haut Peyraguey, and many more. Cadillac is located in the region of Graves, also known as the birthplace of Bordeaux wines. It is a fortified medieval village known as the Bastide in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region in between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers.

Day 7: Castets-en-Dorthe – Entre-Deux-Mers and Graves round tour (16-28 miles/27-46 km) The first town you will discover today is the lovely Saint Macaire and its wonderful gate and walls. There is an opportunity to visit the former residence of the writer Francois Mauriac as well as having your first wine tasting at a château.

Riding along corn and sunflower fields you reach La Réole, using an Eiffel style bridge over the river Garonne. This town is famous because in 1190 Richard Lionheart, on his way to the holy Land, gave the town hall building to thank the locals for their loyalty to the English crown. This historical place holds two castles, an impressive church as well as narrow cobblestone streets.

To end the day you will enjoy the bike path along the « canal de la Garonne » and its deep blue water, built in Napoleon times. You can either go directly back to the ship or ride to Meilhan-sur-Garonne and the amazing scenery it has to offer.

Day 8: Castets-en-Dorthe: Disembarkation and (optional) transfer back to Bordeaux After your final breakfast on board, it will be time for a return transfer (optional) to the pre-agreed drop off point in the city center of Bordeaux. Disembarkation between 9:00-9:30am.

The terrain is relatively flat with some short climbs out of the river valleys onto the intervening vineyard areas. The daily cycling distances range from 19-31 miles/30-50km.

Great Adventure

Had a great time riding through the Bordeaux wine country. E-Bike made it easy (I'm 74) and the French countryside was beautiful. Our bike guide was awesome and very knowledgeable about wine and the local history. Food was great and the room was comfortable. Very enjoyable week!

The bike rides were great and we discovered fantastic wines!

Everything about the MS Bordeaux, the Captain and his crew exceeded our expectations. It was so enjoyable to arrive on board, unpack for eight days, and relax. On other bike rides, we unpacked every night and repacked every morning. I think another bike/barge is in order. A total delight was our interaction with 19-year old Dorrian. He was the highlight of the trip. He gave the welcome briefing, the evening briefings on what to expect the next day, and was always available. The final night on board, was the Captains Dinner, then a party with dancing! It was a perfect way to celebrate the end of our adventure!

Trip with my daughters

The trip was fine as the area of Bordeaux is so picturesque, but the rating of the trip was easy to moderate which was not true as we encountered hills every day. Some of the hills were quite difficult. They should re rate it as totally moderate.

Bordeaux trip

Overall a great week. Wineries (that were open and ready to accommodate us) were sadly very few and far between - and the wine was supposed to be a big part of the trip! But great scenery, bikes were excellent.

Great way to see this region. Most used E-bikes. Furnished GPS was very helpful, as printed directions were poor. Our group of 24 was great. Don't know how a maximum group of 80 would be.

Fabulous trip

Our boat-bike trip was wonderful. The bike guide paced the day perfectly; he had stops planned for food and the sights. I still am amazed how many kms I traveled each day.

Very enjoyable

This is the third boat and bike trip we've been on and we've liked all three. This one was the first in France. We really enjoyed the countryside and the cities and villages we went to, and of course the vineyards. We took the guided tour which was well worthwhile. Only two couples took the guided and we had a great time together with the guide Scott. Scott is very knowledgeable and got us in to see some things that others couldn't. Also, most others got lost on many days because the daily routes are loops that don't just follow the waterway. You really need to pay attention at the nightly meetings. We thought the food on the boat was quite good although it did not meet the expectations of everyone. I might add the crew on the boat were all very friendly and helpful. I feel the one negative is that you can't bring/drink your own wine/liquor on board without paying an outlandish uncorking fee.

Bordeaux, France Boat and Bike Trip

This tour gave my wife and I many fond memories. We took the guided tour because we knew that the local guide would be able to provide information and regarding the local history and interests as well as take us to the out of the way locations. We were not disappointed. We would recommend this tour to anyone!!

Bike barge tour France — bon vivant by bike and boat

Fine French cuisine, equally good wine, charming chateaus, and a lust for life par excellence — it’s not hard to be tempted by a bike barge tour in France. And who are we to stop you! In fact, we too are lovers of cycle cruises exploring France’s classic landscapes, tumultuous history, indomitable culture and dangerously-good boulangeries, and offer a wide range of cycle and cruise tours throughout this diverse and very bike-friendly country.

Let’s start with the south: The city of Bordeaux combines cycling adventures, the finest of wines, the sun of southwest France, and the exceptional, culturally-rich city of Bordeaux itself. The Bordeaux bike and boat tour explores this wine region, discovering castles, grand architecture, beautiful rivers, superb museums, and world-class vineyards. Or perhaps opt for our Provence – Camargue tour from Avignon to Aigues Mortes, passing through wild nature, the Rhone Valley and Van Gogh’s Provence — and even spotting the Pont du Gard.

All roads lead to Paris on a bike barge tour France

Paris. Little needs to be said about the City of Lights and its famous Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, grand bridges over the Seine River or its cozy bistros…  But it must be said that Paris is a wonderful starting (or ending) point for bike barge tours in France.

Take, for example, the voyage of exploration along the Seine River from Paris to Montargis , taking in the forests and history of Fontainebleau, and the impressionist hotbeds of Barbizon and Moret-sur-Loing. Or instead depart in search of the homeland of Champage, Epernay , biking, cruising and tasting your way through this region of Brie and sparkling wine.

Take French cycle cruise routes to Belgium and Germany

Paris is also a fantastic departure point for bike barge tours out of France, with our Paris – Bruges tour passing through the many delights of northern France’s rolling rural countryside. You’ll then enter the French-speaking part of Belgium, also known as Wallonia, visit Somme Valley battlefields, and the gorgeous medieval city of Ghent on your way to romantic Bruges.

Or take a cross-European bike barge tour through France, Luxembourg and Germany as you follow the Moselle River Valley; stopping off to sample its wonderful Rieslings, and relaxing in towns full of half-timbered houses, before pedaling on under the watch of hilltop fortresses.

Your itinerary from Bordeaux, to Cognac and La Rochelle

Inspiration

Reading time: 0 min Published on 4 January 2023, updated on 16 April 2024

From Bordeaux to La Rochelle, get the inside view on Nouvelle Aquitaine with Trainline!

Day 1 and 2: Bordeaux

BORDEAUX, an elegant 18th century city on the Garonne, is classified by UNESCO and world famous for its wines with recognized appellations, like the Medoc, Saint-Emilion, Sauternes or Graves. Stroll along the quays of the Garonne River and discover the port's past. Admire the 18th century architecture and its elegant stone buildings, while enjoying the gastronomic and cultural wealth of the city. Besides its intrinsic beauty, Bordeaux is an ideal starting point for excursions to the nearby wine regions.

To Do: 1) La Cité du Vin : Sometimes defined as the "Lighthouse of Wine Tourism in Bordeaux" or the "Totem of Bordeaux," the City of Wine continues to entrance its visitors with its unusual architecture and fabulous collections. Discover all the riches and diversity of the world's wine in the museum ranked 7th best in the world by National Geographic. La Cité du Vin is a unique cultural facility dedicated to wine as a cultural, universal, and living heritage. The museum offers a spectacular journey around the world, through the ages, in all cultures. Address: Esplanade of Pontac, 134 Quai de Bacalan, 33300 Bordeaux

2) Take in the architecture: Along the quays and streets of Bordeaux rise delicate cathedrals like Saint-André and its la Tour Pey-Berland, as well as sumptuous mansions like the Archiepiscopal and the Rohan Palaces. These wonders are dotted with even older structures, like the Cilhau Gate triumphal arch from the Renaissance and the medieval clockwork of the Grosse Cloche.

3) Le Miroir d'Eau: It is less than 10 years old, but it (almost) overshadows the monumental three century old building that it reflects. Located opposite the Place de la Bourse, between the Quai de la Douane and the Louis XVIII quay, this spectacular work by landscape architect Michel Corajoud alternates extraordinary effects of mirror and fog.

4) The Wine Route: From Bordeaux, there are six wine routes to explore the best of this grape-growing region. To the north-west, there is Medoc and its road of the castles, and to the south Sauternes and the Graves, cradle of the vineyards of Bordeaux. In the north-east you can find the region of Saint-Emilion and its medieval village, then, overlooking the estuary, Blaye and Bourg. And finally, to the east: the great region of Bordeaux-Entre-deux-Mers, the "Bordeaux Tuscany".

Day 3: Gare Saint Jean, Bordeaux to Cognac in 1:30

COGNAC, birthplace of François I, is as rich in history and heritage as it is in distillery. Come and discover the eponymous city of this famous drink, also called "liqueur of the gods." The medieval district of the city stretches from the Saint-Jacques towers, along the river, to the Saint-Léger church. The area contains many surprising buildings, built between the 15th and 18th century, located in narrow cobblestone streets. While the city owes cognac its universal reputation, the liquor, though delicious, is only one lense through which to view the city.

1) The Cognac Houses: each offers specific tours, tastings and experiential workshops. • Hennessy House : For over two centuries, Hennessy has never stopped writing the history of cognac. The House is today the undisputed leader in this market and one of the major players in the world of high-end spirits. • Maison Martell : Under the aegis of the Martell family since 1715, Martell, the oldest of the great cognac houses, uses its know-how to create cognacs that have been famous and appreciated for three centuries.

2)Discover the local gastronomy: Meet the local producers in their farm or workshop, discover the traditions and know-how that are passed down from generation to generation, and enjoy their products (honey, nuts, chocolate, foie gras, caviar, snails ...). The cuisine of Cognac will delight the whole family.

3)Tour the Tours Saint Jacques: The two curving towers, called Saint Jacques Towers or Porte des Ponts, are the most visible remains of what was the medieval fortified enclosure. Facing these towers, a medieval bridge, demolished in 1855, gave access to the other side of the Charente.

4) Cognac Castle : Destroyed in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century, the Château des Valois earned its reputation as the home of a royal family—King Francis I was born there in 1494. Its most amazing features are the Helmet Room, the Tower of Count Jean, and the beautiful vaulted room known as the State Hall. The castle now belongs to Otard Cognac House.

Day 4: Cognac to Rochefort in 1:15

Rochefort, a "ville royale," located at the estuary of the Charente, is a city of art, history, and a love of the sea. The city hides many treasure, including the famed frigate linked with Lafayette, the Hermione.

1) The Hermione : This famous boat is linked to the legend of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, who was on board during his travels to the States during the American Revolution. With dedication and artisinal savoir-faire, the frigate was reconstructed 20 years ago. In 2015, young novice sailors followed Lafayette's transatlantic route along the American East Coast under the command of Yann Cariou. The frigate has since returned to her home port and opens its holds to visitors.

2) The Arsenal : In the seventeenth century, Louis XIV dreamt of reigning supreme on land as well as on the sea—to do this, he needed a place to build and arm his warships. He chose Rochefort and the Charente, installing the royal arsenal. Nestled in the heart of a meander of the Charente river, the Maritime Arsenal of Rochefort, nicknamed the "Versailles of the Sea," is a place of incredible technical innovation in shipbuilding. Between its opening in 1666 and its final closure in 1927, nearly 550 warships were built there!

IF YOU HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME:

3) Stroll in Fouras: a seaside resort at the mouth of the Charente, located between Rochefort and La Rochelle, this peninsula has kept all of its 19th century charm. Sheltered by the islands Oléron, Madame, and Aix with a 360 degree panorama, all five beaches boast beautiful views.

Day 5: Rochefort to La Rochelle in 25 minutes.

LA ROCHELLE and its islands are a city of more than a thousand years old turned towards the future! Nestled in the heart of the Atlantic seafront, the city has transformed its maritime base into a great economic, touristic and cultural asset, while maintaining its unique beauty.

• The Towers of the Old Port: From the Old Port, one can only admire the majestic towers, the guardians of the city. Facing the Atlantic, they've witnessed the power and wealth of La Rochelle through the centuries. These maritime fortifications, built in the Middle Ages and today classified as Historical Monuments, stand out when you visit La Rochelle. On each side of the harbor entrance, the Saint-Nicolas Tower, the highest, and the Tower of the Chain, the further, are connected to it by a wall. Finally, there's the Tower of the Lantern, formerly a lighthouse and prison. • Visit the Ile de Ré: The Bois-Plage-en-Ré located on the South coast of the island is one of the oldest seaside resorts in France. Open to the ocean, the town is proud of the quality of its beaches, awarded the Blue Flag 2015 (a mark of exemplary coastlines). The village is best visited through its winding alleys and streets, pleasantly lined with hollyhocks from May to September.
