2022 SC Festival of Discovery

July 7, 2022@6:00 pm - july 9, 2022@12:00 am.

blues cruise greenwood sc

Over 90 competition BBQ teams. Over 25 national and international blues musicians. One of the South’s largest BBQ and blues festivals is set for Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina July 7-9, 2022. The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is in its 21st year and presented by Carolina Pride Foods. As in years past, the SC Festival of Discovery is proud to offer no gate or parking fees as well as no cover charges for the Blues Concerts.

“Year after year, the SC Festival of Discovery continues to snowball into one of our country’s premier food and music festivals. We are proud and excited in 2022 to host renowned BBQ competitors and blues artists for local and visiting enthusiasts of both. We look forward to seeing you July 7-9!”, said Mayor Brandon Smith, City of Greenwood.

Over 90 teams are expected to compete in this years’ KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) sanctioned event that includes a prize purse of $25,000, with the Grand Champion taking home more than $3,000. Because over 112 judges will be required to judge so many entries, officials expect the hotels and restaurants to be full of visitors throughout the weekend, producing a large economic impact for the Greenwood area. Most of the teams will be located on Uptown Greenwood’s Main Street, which will be closed during the entire Festival.

For the fourth year, kids will have an opportunity to compete in Kids Que, which allows young chefs to show off their grilling skills for the chance to win a cash prize and the title of Kids Que champion. Kids Que will take place Friday from 6 – 8 pm, July 8 at the Uptown Market. “Blues and BBQ are a part of South Carolina culture and tradition,” said Greenwood Blues Cruise Artistic Director Gary Erwin. “The Blues Cruise is an eclectic mix of blues music styles in an intimate setting of Uptown Greenwood’s outdoor stage and small pubs and restaurants.” He adds, “It’s no wonder we’ve been on everyone’s summer fun radar for twenty-one fabulous years!”

The fun starts Thursday evening, July 7th, with a kickoff concert at 6:30pm on the Main Stage. Outdoor concerts will continue through Saturday at 10pm on the Main Stage tent and throughout various “Blues Cruise” venues in the Uptown Greenwood area.

The Old 96 District of South Carolina is smokin’ hot during its wildly popular blues and BBQ festival in Greenwood, SC. The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is a weekend event filled with all the barbeque you can eat and some of the best blues music around.

The SC Festival of Discovery takes place in July, just a month after the SC Festival of Flowers (also in Greenwood). Many of the amazing topiaries from that event can still be spotted uptown, so you’re getting a bit of a twofer in July.

2023 Festival Dates: July 6-8

About the Cook-Off

The festival centers around a Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned cook-off and teams come from all over the country to compete.

Many teams are strictly there for the grand prize title (so they don’t sell samples), but some of the teams vend during the festival and/or compete in the People’s Choice competition, which means they’ve got BBQ for YOU.

Sample the ‘Cue and Vote

Your job as a festival attendee is to have fun. Listen to blues. And eat. And eat. And eat.

Saturday kicks off the People’s Choice event and you can buy sample tickets for $1 which you can exchange for a barbeque sample at one of the People’s Choice vendors. If you purchase five tickets, you can cast a vote for your favorite taste of the day.

The winners are announced on the main stage at 5 pm.

SC Festival of Discovery Blues Cruise

There’s music all over uptown Greenwood during the SC Festival of Discovery, so cruise between the various venues to catch some amazing blues performances.

Both the main stage and local stage have music acts scheduled all weekend long. I discovered so many new-to-me musicians worth following. My favorite: 61 Ghosts.

You’ll also want to check out some of the smaller venue blues performances scattered throughout uptown businesses.

Hot Dog Eating Competition

If you love hot dogs, you can sign up for the hot dog eating competition, but fair warning, you’re gonna have to gobble SO MANY DAWGS to win.

This year’s winner, Bryan Crocker, took down 17 dogs in 12 minutes and second-place winner, Russell Prince, finished just one hot dog behind at 16.

hot dog contest

It was fun to see their different speed-eating techniques. Some ate them as is; some ate the dogs separately and dunked the buns in water.

man eating hot dogs

Fun (and disturbing) fact: Joey Chestnut holds the world record for eating hot dogs. He ate 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes for the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York.

Kids’ Zone

splash area for kids in Greenwood

Kids have a space all to themselves near the Uptown Market. The always-there splash pad is the perfect place to cool off, but during the festival, there are kiddie rides and inflatables set up in the parking lot area as well.

If kids are happy, parents are happy, right?

Still Hungry?

people by festival vendor

If you’ve had your fill of barbecue for the moment, there are lots of food and drink vendors selling everything from wine slushies and beer to avocado dip, fresh-squeezed lemonade and ice cream.

And all the local uptown Greenwood restaurants are open during the festival, so you can head indoors for an A/C break and a bite to eat at any time. The retail shops (so many cute boutiques in Greenwood) are open as well.

Where to Stay During the South Carolina Festival of Discovery

Inn on the Square is located in uptown Greenwood so you’ll be right in the heart of the festival and never have to move your car.

The Belmont Inn , a short 20-minute ride away puts you in the historic town of Abbeville and its charming court square filled with eateries and fun shops.

South Carolina Festival Of Discovery 2023: Details & Full Schedule

T he annual South Carolina Festival Of Discovery is taking place in Greenwood, SC from July 6 to 8, 2023. Get all the details about the festival in this post.

For more tips planning your next trip, check out all of our travel posts .

The South Carolina Festival Of Discovery is an annual blues and barbecue festival happening in the namesake of Greenwood County, South Carolina.

The annual event, now in its 22nd year, takes place in the center of Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina from July 6 to 8, 2023.

We went last year and had such a good time. There’s a ton of barbecue to eat and live music all over town. Our favorite part was the People’s Choice, which is a public voted contest. You eat a sample from all the BBQ teams in the competition and vote for your favorite.

The majority of the festival happens on or near Main Street, so keep that in mind for road closures. Main Street, and several side streets, will be closed Thursday, July 6 at 6 pm and will remain closed until Sunday, July 9 at noon.

Keep reading to find out out more about the festival, which is great for the entire family, and get the festival’s full schedule.

The SC Festival Of Discovery is all weekend long, which leaves you time to check out the rest of Greenwood while you’re there.

For help planning that portion of your trip, check out our 24 Hours In Greenwood, South Carolina post.

South Carolina Festival Of Discovery: Everything You Need To Know

Affiliate links are included in this post and Drugstore Divas may make a small commission if you use them.

At the South Carolina Festival Of Discovery, you’ll discover (mostly) barbecue and blues music. Plus, the beautiful town of Greenwood.

Where is Greenwood?

Greenwood, South Carolina is in Greenwood County, in western South Carolina, near the Georgia border.

It’s found in the Old 96 District in South Carolina, which consists of Greenwood, Abbeville, Edgefield , Laurens, and McCormick Counties.

Greenwood is also home to the South Carolina Festival Of Flowers , which originally began in 1968. This year, 42 topiaries were featured throughout the town in the month of June. Each year, over 40 topiaries are featured throughout the town in the month of June. Some of the topiaries are  still on display during the South Carolina Festival Of Discovery.

What is the main attraction of the South Carolina Festival Of Discovery?

The main attractions are the barbecue and the blues music.

Music is life, but let’s start with the food.

Barbecue will be served from lunch Thursday through Saturday evening. There are countless barbecue vendors at the event, all serving hot and fresh barbecue. You can stop by, peruse their offerings, and enjoy lunch or dinner (or lunch and dinner).

The majority of the food vendors are located in the parking lot on Main Street between Court Avenue and Seaboard Avenue (from the Inn on the Square to the Greenwood Community Theater, if you’re familiar with the area).

Some vendors will be set up in the Kids Zone, at Uptown Market and along on Maxwell Street in that area.

In addition to the barbecue vendors, there will be food trucks and other non-barbecue vendors set up around the festival area. There will be dessert trucks, selling items like doughnuts and sno cones, as well.

Outside food and drink isn’t permitted at the festival.

People’s Choice Competition:

If you’re indecisive, Saturday is for you. That’s when the People’s Choice event is happening. From 10 am to 3 pm, anyone can purchase sample tickets for $1 each and redeem them with the barbecue vendors. (Not all the vendors participate in the contest.)

If you purchase five tickets, you’ll be given a voting ticket and can cast your ballot for your favorite barbecue.

Of course, you can sample all of them, but five samples will be filing. That’s what we did last year. But, actually, my mom and I got five tickets each, then split 10 samples.

If that’s what your plan is, we encourage you to start early. The vendors have a limited number of samples, and once they’re out, they’re out. We saw many sell out last year. And so, if you don’t start early enough or eat fast enough, you might end having to use multiple tickets at the same vendor.

At 5 pm, the People’s Choice winner will be announced. The 2022 South Carolina Festival Of Discovery People’s Choice winner was Cherrywood BBQ (we tried their barbecue during the People’s Choice event, but we voted for two different vendors).

Additional competitors will be judged in a Kansas City Barbecue Style competition as well. The 2022 South Carolina Festival Of Discovery grand champion was Smokin’ Sweetmeats .

If you have a kid who loves Top Chef Juniors, the Kids Que competition is for them. Kids ages 6 to 15 will compete Friday, July 7 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Using two pounds of ground beef, a pound of bacon, and a charcoal grill, kids will compete to make barbecue that will be judged blindly.

An adult will be with the child at all time and can only assist with difficult tasks, like lighting the grill or making hard cuts. Everything else is done by the kids.

Blues Cruise:

Don’t be confused by the name: Blues Cruise. It’s not an actual cruise on a boat. Rather, it’s you cruising around to different venues in the area to check out live blues music from numerous musical artists, like Shrimp City Slim from Charleston , 61 Ghosts from Maine, and Tiffany Pollack & Co from New Orleans.

Sir Rod & The Blues Doctors  isn’t on the schedule this year, but that was our favorite band from last year’s festival.

There will be a Main Stage with music on Thursday from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, Friday from 11 am to 10 pm, and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm.

There will also be the local stage upstairs in Howard on Main. Music will start at 6 pm (with the last band taking the stage at 8 pm) on Thursday, 4 pm on Friday (with the last band taking the stage at 9 pm), and noon on Saturday (with the last band taking the stage at 9 pm). This is different than last year where the local stage was at Uptown Market.

But wait, there’s more.

A bunch of Uptown Greenwood restaurants and businesses get in on the fun and have live music in their venues (and on the sidewalk outside their venues). You can catch sets at  Aromas Uptown ,  Buffalo Grill , Eggs Up Grill,  Flynn’s on Maxwell ,  Good Times Brewing ,  Inn on the Square ,  TW Boons ,  Montague’s ,  Polo’s Restaurant , Sled Dawg Brewery , and  Southern Soul on Main .

There will also be music at the Greenwood Museum and the aforementioned local stage at  Howard’s on Main .

There will be a full designated area on Maxwell Avenue, in the Uptown Market Parking Lot, for amusement rides for kids. There will be a Ferris wheel, loop, swing, fun house, inflatable slide, and more. Plus, some food vendors set up in that area.

The Kids Zone will be open from 5 pm to 10 pm on Friday and 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday. Tickets are $1 each or 25 for $20.

That’s also right near the splash pad, which is free and will be running during the day. And that’s great because it’s hot this time of year. So that water is nice.

Alcohol will be available for sale, if you’re 21 or over.

What’s very cool is that you can buy a wristband for $10 that allows you to take beer and wine (no liquor) outside of the festival area, but within designated areas in downtown Greenwood. So you’ll be able to purchase a wristband and take your drink around to the other venues to check out their live music.

You can purchase a wristband outside of Aroma’s Coffee or in front of Sundance Gallery.

What we learned last year, though, is because of this, there’s an ordinance that won’t allow breweries, like Good Times Brewing, to sell their cans or growlers to go during the festival times. It’s a way to stop people won’t purchase a 64 oz. growler, pound it during the festival, and get intoxicated and rowdy. So, if you’re in the area visiting and want to buy craft beer in Greenwood to bring home, you’ll have to find it at local grocery stores and gas stations instead of purchasing it at the brewery itself.

Hot Dog Eating Contest:

On Saturday, there will be a hot dog eating competition from noon to 1 pm. Only South Carolina residents, who are 18 and older (or under 18 with parental permission) are able to compete. So I can’t participate and neither can Joey Chestnut , but we can watch.  If you’ve never seen a hot dog eating contest in real life, it’s more wild than you can even imagine

It costs $5 to enter, which includes a t-shirt and all the hot dogs you can eat in 12 minutes. The winner receives $500.

The 2022 South Carolina Festival Of Discovery hot dog eating contest was Greenwood’s own Bryan Crocker who ate 17 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

Five Festivals for Fun in the Greenwood Sun

There’s plenty to do year-round in Greenwood’s mild climate, but things really heat up in spring and summer. May marks the start of a full-blown season of festivals with mouth-watering food, memorable music, arts, crafts, cars, flowers and all-around fun for everybody. With the SC Festival of Flowers and its famous topiaries coming in June, it’s time to take a look at some of the area’s other big events.

Catfish "Feastival," Ware Shoals, May 25-28, 2022

Tiny Ware Shoals will kick off the fun in May with the Catfish Feastival , a Memorial Day weekend tradition for more than 40 years. Why is it called a “feast”ival? “Because we eat our way through it.”

After being cancelled and then reimagined as a smaller fall event in 2020, the 2021 festival returned to its former glory, with the same planned for this year. “We’re not scaling back on anything,” says organizer Rick Holland. The Wednesday night gospel show returns to the Feastival for the second time, with three church choirs performing.

As befitting an event that even has its own theme song, music is a big part of the feast-ivities. This year, beach music is on tap, with concerts by the Tams and Chairmen of the Board, and South Carolina country music favorite Cody Webb for a change of pace.

Of course, with the word “feast” in the name, there has to be food—and lots of it. In addition to the catfish (as much as 2,800 pounds of it!), there are always plenty of food trucks selling other festival favorites, including delicious Carolina barbeque.  Even last year, when the festival was cancelled, there were still plates of catfish and side dishes—and the famous catfish stew by the quart—available for carry out.

In years past, up to 25,000 people have attended the three-day festival, a huge undertaking for a town of only 2,000 people. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it when you see people having a good time,” Rick says.

“I love to see the kids having fun,” says Teresa Holland, Rick’s wife, who also serves on the Feastival board. Teresa spent 12 years as a substitute teacher in Ware Shoals schools, and she loves all the rides for the younger set. “For so many kids, it’s like DisneyWorld,” she says.

Free shuttles are available to get people to the event grounds. One big part of the festival has always been the pageants for different age groups. Last year, the pageants became a virtual event, where everybody wins. That’s one change that is staying with them.

The Feastival is the town’s signature event, and a point of pride for the community. Teresa says that the board meets the day after the festival closes each year to eat a meal together, reconcile the books and start planning the next year’s event. After 11 years on the board, the Hollands haven’t even started to let up, and are planning another fall event to carry the enthusiasm forward.

Festival of Stars, Ninety Six, June 22-25, 2022

The town of Ninety Six kicks off its annual Independence Day celebration in the Town Park with midway rides and entertainment on Wednesday-Friday, June 22-24. A Red, White and Blue Parade kicks off the big day, Saturday. “Anything with wheels” is the motto, with cars, trucks, bikes, golf carts, tractors, wagons and baby strollers (and their drivers) decked out for the festivities. Entry is free, and the fun is contagious.

A car show begins at noon, with food vendors, eating contests and entertainment throughout the day, all leading up a concert and to the big finale, the annual, highly anticipated patriotic fireworks celebration at 9:45 p.m.

Plans are still in the works for a photo contest and other activities, depending on the COVID-19 outlook as the date approaches. Margie Blalock, Ninety Six tourism director, says that while plans are dependent on the status of the pandemic, the Festival of Stars will probably have a fall harvest version of the festival with a focus on bluegrass music and the town’s much loved scarecrow decorations.

Before the dazzling fireworks, music by the all-star group of musicians that make up the Jake Bartley Band, as well as food vendors are planned, but details will be confirmed closer to the date.

Lights on the Lake, July 2, 2022

Lights on the Lake is a spectacular fireworks show that fires up both the water and the sky with color, sound and magical shapes. The synchronized display and inspiring music are the memorable finale of what is by far the largest event on Lake Greenwood and one of the largest for Greenwood and Laurens Counties.

Connect Lake Greenwood (CLG) offers viewing both on land and water. Although the event on Camp Fellowship Road is free, advance tickets are required because of limited space.

Lights on the Lake is one of several events that Connect Lake Greenwood produces, including boat socials and concerts.

Two popular Paddle the River events are back this year. Kayakers and canoers put in below the dam for the two-hour paddle to Silverstreet. The first is scheduled for 10 a.m., June 11, with a second paddle day still to be scheduled later in the summer.

SC Festival of Discovery and Blues Cruise, July 7-9, 2022

Mouthwatering barbeque and renowned blues musicians are the twin centerpieces of this highly anticipated celebration of the area’s culture, history and arts. Sponsored by the Uptown Greenwood Development Corporation, the Festival of Discovery is a premier event for the region.

blues cruise greenwood sc

The central festival area will be along Main Street, while the Kid Zone Friday night and all day Saturday, with a ferris wheel and other rides, and arts and crafts area will be across from the Mill House on Maxwell Ave.

“Blues Cruise” brings music to the restaurants and venues of Uptown Greenwood, while the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) BBQ and Hash Cook-Off brings the best of the region’s tastes to town.

This year’s incredible musical lineup features the entire gamut of blues-infused music—classic, electric, Creole, Chicago, roadhouse, funky, R&B, and uptown soul. From slow drag to high energy, from mellow sets to back porch boogies, the music just keeps going. There are two stages this year, one on Main Street between Oak and Court Avenues, and another at the Uptown Market,as well as performances in local restaurants.

A full slate of BBQ teams is already lined up for the competition, and additional events for the whole family are in the planning stages. The Kids Que competition on Friday allows young chefs to showcase their skills.

Nothing shows off the fun, friendly atmosphere of Greenwood like a festival. Come to one, or be there for all of them.
