Behold Bohol

About bohol.

Located at the heart of Central Visayas, the Island province of Bohol is the 10th largest island in the Philippines with a total land area of 4,117.3 square kilometres. It is composed of an oval-shaped mainland surrounded by 72 smaller islands.

A popular tourist destination, the province is abundant of beaches and resorts. Its well-known beaches are found in Panglao Island, which is situated south-west of the province, and in Anda, located on the island’s east side. Bohol is composed of 1 city and 47 municipalities.

Tagbilaran City, the capital of Bohol, is known as the “City of Friendship.” Situated in the south-western part of the province, it has a total land area of 32.70 km2 (12.63 sq mi) and a coastline of 13 km (8.1 mi). The city shares its boundaries with the municipalities of Cortes, Corella, and Baclayon. It is 630 km (390 mi) southeast of the national capital of Manila and 72 km (45 mi) south of the regional capital, Cebu City.

Tagbilaran City’s name is derived from “Tagu Bilaan” which means TAGU (to hide) and BILAAN (a Muslim marauder tribe) – hence its name means to hide from Muslim marauders.

Bohol launches new tourism motto, says it has recovered from 2013 quake

The Province of Bohol on Thursday launched its new tourism motto as it also declared that the province has "fully recovered" from the 2013 earthquake that killed 222 people and devastated many of its colonial churches .

The new motto, "Behold...Bohol," is accompanied by developments such as the opening of the new international airport in Panglao next year as well as continued support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

USAID, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and the World Tourism Organization, helped the province develop the Bohol Tourism Recovery Program (BTRP), under which the "Behold...Bohol" branding was created.

"The US government strongly believes that tourism development has a holistic impact in addressing poverty and preserving the environment through sustainable jobs," USAID Deputy Mission Director Christopher Foley said at the campaign's launch.

"With strong cooperation of local communities and private tourism stakeholders in Bohol, [the Advancing Philippine Competitiveness or USAID COMPETE project] did not only help bring Bohol back on its feet but also helped boost tourism further with the integration of exciting tourism packages," Foley said.

At the launch, Bohol also renewed its agreement with its airline partner AirAsia, which will increase its flights between Manila and Bohol from three times a day to four times daily.

Bohol has long been one of the most popular tourism destinations in the Philippines. Its attractions include its beaches, its Spanish-era churches, the Chocolate Hills, and its tarsiers.  — BM, GMA News

When I first stepped into Bohol, my first question was:

Why didn’t I come here sooner???

Few places in the Philippines are as beautiful and well-developed for tourism as Bohol.

From the Chocolate Hills and the main tourist zones, all the way to the quiet and lesser-visited towns, Bohol is through and through an amazing island.

In this Bohol travel guide, I’ll go over:

  • Travel facts you should know before visiting
  • How to get to Bohol from anywhere in the Philippines
  • Transportation options and how to get around
  • A Bohol travel map
  • Where to stay in Bohol
  • What you can do on the island
  • Sample Itineraries
  • Where to go after visiting Bohol

And I’ll also answer a bunch of FAQs people usually ask about the island.

Let’s dive in!

Bohol Travel Facts – 3 Things You Should Know Before Visiting

Before we get into all the details you trip planners need to know, let’s start with the fun stuff.

Here are a few things that make Bohol unique!

Bohol Travel Facts #1 – Bohol is One of the Best Places for Solo Travelers

Me looking out at the sea

“Why are you here alone???”

That’s something I hear a gazillion times in my travels. And it’s true… some places in the Philippines are hard for solo travelers.

Not Bohol.

Bohol was one of the only places where everyone understood what solo travelers were. No one gave me weird looks about it.

Aside from that, there are also a BUNCH of travelers from all over the world here, so meeting like-minded people is super easy. There are hundreds of hostels you can stay at, and there are a bunch of group tours you can join!

And if mingling with others isn’t your thing, their tourist spots are the types where you can just drive up on a motorbike alone and enjoy yourself.

Bohol Travel Facts #2 – But It’s Also a Place for Everyone

Me and sister facing chocolate hills

Even if you’re not an adventurous solo backpacker, you’ll still LOVE Bohol.

If you’re the type of person who prefers luxurious resorts and fancy restaurants, you’ll find PLENTY of that in Bohol.

If you’re the type of person that wants to go freediving, or bungee jump off a cliff, you can do that in Bohol as well!

If you like doing private tours, or if you’d rather get on a motorbike and explore alone, both options are great in Bohol.

There’s truly something for everyone on this majestic island!

That’s because:

Bohol Travel Facts #3 – Bohol is One of the Best Developed Islands for Tourism

Boats waiting in Panglao

Bohol is a tourism powerhouse.

It’s one of the most visited islands in the Philippines, and it’s very easy to see why.

Aside from the main tourist spots, even the less visited towns have tourism officers!

I was shocked when I visited Alicia to find a super enthusiastic officer who arranged my hike up the Panoramic Peak (more on that later) .

But for now, let’s get into the planning details!

How to Get to Bohol From Anywhere

Bohol is one of the most accessible islands in the Philippines. No matter where you are, there’s bound to be a quick and easy way to get here.

I’m going to cover how to get to Bohol from the 5 main entry points:

  • Oslob / Moalboal
  • Siquijor, and

How to Get to Bohol from Manila

There are daily direct flights to Bohol from Manila courtesy of Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and Air Asia.

Travel time is 1 hour, and tickets are generally affordable if you book in advance (especially if you wait for promo fares) .

If the schedule doesn’t work for you, you can also consider flying into Cebu City first. Which brings us to…

How to Get to Bohol from Cebu City

There are dozens of boats from Cebu City to Bohol. Most tourists ride the Ocean Jet fast craft from Cebu Pier 1 to Tagbilaran. Travel time is 2 hours, and tickets cost php800 – php1,000.

This is considered the best route for tourists because it’s fast and convenient, and it docks in Tagbilaran, which is very close to the main tourist zone Panglao.

Other options include fast and slow boats to Getafe, Tubigon, and a bunch of other ports in Bohol. If you choose these, you’ll have to get on a bus going to Tagbilaran, and then a tricycle to Panglao.

How to Get to Bohol from Oslob or Moalboal

There’s one ferry that leaves daily from Quartel Beach in Oslob to Momo Beach in Panglao. It’s run by Apekop Travel, and travel time is around 1.5 hours.

If you’re in Oslob or Moalboal but don’t want to go back to Cebu City to get to Bohol, this is a godsend.

You can check updated schedules and book tickets online here . Right now, it leaves at 11:30 am and costs roughly php1,000.

Note: this is the best way to get to Bohol from Moalboal, but you have 3 other options which I wrote about here !

How to Get to Bohol from Siquijor

There’s a daily direct fast ferry from Siquijor Port to Tagbilaran Port. It’s run by Ocean Jet, costs php800 – php1,000, and travel time is 2 hours.

You can check the latest schedule and book online here .

Alternatively, there’s also a fast boat that leaves daily from Larena Port to Tagbilaran. It’s run by Apekop .

How to Get to Bohol from Camiguin

There’s a daily ferry from Mambajao, Camiguin to Jagna, Bohol. It runs once a day costs php760, travel time is 4 hours, and you can book at the port or online.

This route is run by Super Shuttle, and the ferry currently leaves at 9:30 am . However, schedules are bound to change. You can Super Shuttle’s Facebook page for updates.

Bohol Travel Requirements 2024

Bohol currently has no travel requirements! Everyone is free to enter Bohol with or without vaccinations, and no pre-booked accommodation is needed.

How to Get Around Bohol

So now that you’ve arrived at Bohol, the next big question is:

How do you get around???

There are plenty of options, so I’ll go over them one by one.

Renting a Motorbike (Best Option)

Motorbike parked at the end of the Holy Mountain trail

Remember what I said about Bohol being great for backpackers?

Well, this is one of the reasons why.

It’s super easy to rent a motorbike here and just travel wherever you want, whenever you want. The freedom you get from driving a motorbike is unmatched.

There are a bunch of motorbikes for rent right outside the Tagbilaran Pier for php400/day, so you can pick up and drop off the bike as you enter and exit Bohol.

There are also motorbike rentals all over Panglao, Tagbilaran, and Anda; pretty much anywhere there are tourists.

Motorbike rentals range from php300 – php500 a day. You typically have to leave a security deposit or an ID (note for foreigners: never leave your passport!).

Ride Tricycles or Habal-Habal (Motorcycle Taxi)

If you can’t / don’t want to rent a motorbike, you can opt for tricycles or habal-habals instead.

You can find them all over Tagbilaran and Panglao.

However, prices are mostly unregulated, so prepare your haggling skills!

For short distances, expect to pay around php20 – 50, medium distances will cost you php100 – 400. And long distances (like Tagbilaran Pier to Panglao) usually start at around php500.

Some tricycles also offer land tours. These usually go for around php1,500 – php2,000.

Bus in Carmen, Bohol

In Bohol, buses are primarily used for long-distance travel. And in Bohol, you never pre-book these.

If you’re heading to Jagna to catch the ferry to Camiguin, or if you’re going to spend some time in Anda, or if you’re going to Carmen to DIY your Chocolate Hills visit – buses are the way to go.

There are also buses every hour from the Dao Terminal in Tagbilaran to the Alona area in Panglao. If your timing is right, you can hop on one instead of taking a tricycle.

Bus fares are typically cheap. Tagbilaran to Panglao only costs around php100, while Tagbilaran to Anda will cost around php150.

Like buses, vans are often used for longer-distance travel. Most organized tours also use vans.

Unlike buses, it’s easy to get a private van to take you around. These usually cost around php3,200 for 8 hours.

Bohol Travel Map

A fun, Bohol travel map coming soon! For now, here’s a map by Bohol Philippines.

When you’re traveling Bohol, there are really 6 areas that tourists should be aware of:

  • Carmen – Loboc (and central Bohol)
  • Anda (and East Bohol)
  • San Isidro (and West Bohol)
  • Danao (and North Bohol)

Let’s take a closer look!

Tagbilaran – The Main City

I love Tagbilaran sign

Tagbilaran is the main city and entry point into Bohol.

It’s bustling, full of buildings and stores, and can also get quite traffic.

For travelers, it’s here you’ll find:

  • The Tagbilaran Pier
  • Motorbike rental (right outside the pier)
  • Dao Bus Terminal (for getting around Bohol)
  • Shopping centers for any needs you have

Other than that, there’s not much you can do or see around the city except for the Blood Compact Shrine (which is just a shrine) .

Panglao – Main Tourist Zone

Dumaluan Beach in Panglao

This is where you’ll find all the accommodations – from hotels and resorts to homestays and hostels. You’ll also find the airport here.

The main strip in Panglao is along Alona Beach.

Alona area gets extremely lively, with bright lights, live shows, and countless food options. But it can also get overcrowded, especially during peak hours.

There are plenty of accommodations and restaurants scattered all over Panglao. But the further you go from Alona, the more spread out they become.

Panglao does have a few tourist spots worth visiting (which I’ll get to in a bit) . And it’s also the main hub for scuba and freediving!

Carmen, Loboc, and Central Bohol – Main Sightseeing Area

Loboc River

Before heading to Bohol, I thought the Chocolate Hills would be near my hostel (in Panglao) .

Boy was I wrong!

It turns out most of the sightseeing spots are in Central Bohol, which is a full 1.5 hours away from Panglao!

But I’ll say this, the spots here are well worth the long drive. From the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers to the manmade forests and the green Loboc River, these are some of the most unique spots I’ve been to (more about them in a bit) .

Plus, they’re all relatively close to each other, so you can visit them all in one go.

Anda and East Bohol – SUPER Underrated Destination

Beach in Anda

Easta Bohol is SO beautiful…

And SO underrated…

I’m going to write a full travel guide just for this place.

Let me just give you a quick summary here!

Anda is a full 2 hours away from Panglao, which is why it doesn’t get nearly as much attention.

But the beaches and the spots here are just as beautiful – and arguably even better since they’re not as crowded.

From the cave pools of Anda to the stunning hills of Alicia, I can’t express how much I love this place.

A MUST visit for backpackers!

San Isidro and West Bohol – Waterfalls and Off-The-Beaten-Path

Kawasan Falls in Bohol

I’m going to be honest…

I don’t know a lot about West Bohol, and I doubt many travelers do too.

There are some ports to Cebu here like Tubigon and Loon.

And you’ll also find waterfalls like Camugao and Kawasan here (worth a visit btw) .

But other than those, it’s very much off-the-beaten-path.

If you’re the type of traveler who likes that kind of stuff, this might be a good place to start. I remember seeing another bright green river here that isn’t as well known as Loboc (I didn’t even know the name) .

Danao and the North – Bungee Jump and Off-The-Beaten-Path

Last, there’s North Bohol, which, aside from the Danao Adventure Park, has no famous spots.

So head up here if you’re up for some thrills – like the highest canyon swing in the world (75 meters) .

Or maybe head up here if you want to escape the crowd.

There’s also a port to Cebu in Jetafe, which is one of the closest ones to Cebu City.

Where to Stay in Bohol

Instead of giving you exact hotels to stay at (there are so many of them) …

I’m instead going to give you a general idea of what the areas are like, and where I stayed.

Then you can head to your favorite booking site and look for hotels near that area. How does that sound?

Where to Stay in Bohol – Alona (duh)

Sunrise Huts near Alona Beach, Panglao

For travelers, the default area to stay is around Alona Beach in Panglao.

There are countless options in this area, from dirt-cheap hostels to luxurious resorts like Hennan, The Bellevue, and South Palms.

If you don’t like big crowds, you can always stay a few minutes away from the main strip. There are plenty of tricycles all over Panglao that can take you to the main zone anytime (or you can rent a motorbike).

However, keep in mind that Alona Beach is mediocre.

If you’re looking for cleaner, whiter sand, less crowded, and bigger beaches, you can stay in the Dumaluan Beach area (which is right beside Alona) .

When I visited, I stayed a full week in Sunrise Huts, a quiet, secluded hostel that’s right beside Dumaluan.

Inside Sunrise Huts hostel

It’s not a social hostel by any means, and there’s nothing that’s walking distance from it. But it was a cozy and quiet place which I loved.

Finally, you’ll find lots of quieter places to stay all along Panglao. Just double-check how far away they are from Alona (because that’s really where all the action is!)

Where to Stay in Bohol – Central Bohol Resorts

If you want a quiet escape, then you should probably look around Central Bohol.

All along the majestic green Loboc River, you’ll find resorts that allow you to get away from it all.

For backpackers looking to take public transport, you’ll also find a couple of cheap inns around the Carmen area.

Carmen is where the Chocolate Hills are, so you can see why this is a popular place to spend the night!

Where to Stay in Bohol – Tagbilaran

Or rather, where to NOT stay in Bohol.

Tagbilaran is a city.

So unless you have business to do, I really don’t recommend staying here.

Even though it’s a small city, its roads are tiny, so it still jams up with traffic.

There’s absolutely no reason for travelers to base themselves here (unless it’s for a luxury resort on the city outskirts) .

Where to Stay in Bohol – Anda

Beach resort in Anda

When visiting East Bohol, Anda is the automatic place to stay.

It’s a beautiful and secluded beach town, and has plenty of resorts to stay at too.

When I visited, I stayed at One Peace Beach Resort, which was a little bit isolated, but not a worry because I had a motorbike.

One Peace Beach Resort in Anda

The resort was super peaceful, it had its own beachfront, and I got a bed in a dorm for just php500/night (pretty sweet) .

The Belgian owner, Boris, is also very friendly. He even offered to draw me a hiking route map of Anda if I wanted.

What To Do in Bohol – 7 Things To Do and See

Now for the fun part!

There are a gazillion things you can see and do in Bohol.

I’ll get more in-depth into everything in my Bohol Tourist Spots post (coming soon) , but for now, here are some ideas on what you can do!

Things to do in Bohol – Visit the Chocolate Hills

The chocolate hills

The most famous landmark on the entire island is the Chocolate Hills.

A UNESCO Global Geopark, the landscape of these hills is unlike anything you’ll ever see.

The hills themselves are limestone karsts. There are over a thousand of them, but the main one is where you’ll find the Chocolate Hills Complex.

stairs going up chocolate hills

There’s a paved road hugging the hill, and there are stairs that’ll take you to the very top, where the best views of the hills are.

Entrance here is php100, but it’s very much worth it.

You can always go crazy and just try to climb a random chocolate hill you find for free. But I don’t recommend doing this!

You can get to the Chocolate Hills by renting a motorbike and driving here, or you can also join the popular Bohol Countryside Tour.

Speaking of which…

Things to do in Bohol – Go on the Countryside Tour

Bilar manmade forest

The Countryside Tour is by far the most popular tour in Bohol.

You can go with a tour agency or, if you’re like me, just rent a motorbike and do it yourself.

The reason it’s so popular is because even though the spots are far away from Panglao, they’re all close to each other, making it super easy to visit them all in one day.

The Countryside Tour includes:

  • Chocolate Hills
  • Tarsier Sanctuary
  • Bilar Manmade Forest
  • Xzootic Animal Park (don’t recommend)
  • Loboc River
  • Baclayon Church

All of the spots are worth a visit, except maybe Xzootic (which is a bit of a sad zoo) .

The Tarsier Sanctuary is one of the only places in the world where you can come face-to-face with the tiny primates.

Tarsier sleeping

The manmade forest is just a road surrounded by trees, but it’s picturesque.

Bilar manmade forest road

Loboc River is glowing green, and going on their lunch buffet cruise is a wonderful experience (php850) . Loboc is so beautiful and has a lot to do, many people come all the way just for it.

Cruise boat in Loboc River

Finally, Baclayon Church is a nice old church. It’s not too different if you’ve seen Philippine churches before, but still a nice stopover before heading back.

Things to do in Bohol – Go Island Hopping!

Man rowing boat

Like almost every other province, Bohol has its own version of island hopping as well.

But here’s the thing:

Bohol’s island hopping is one of the better ones.

It’s a half-day tour, and stops include:

  • The dolphin-watching area
  • Virgin Island sandbar
  • Balicasag reef
  • Balicasag island

The dolphins only show up early in the morning, so try to leave as early as possible. If you’re not traveling alone, you can also get a private boat to take you out so you can leave at 6 am and beat the crowd.

The Virgin Island sandbar is a cool bunch of sand in the middle of the sea. It’s great for a quick swim, but there isn’t much else to do around here. Also, there’s usually a long line of people taking pictures with the Virgin Island sign.

Virgin Island in Bohol

Balicasag Reef is one of the most amazing reefs I’ve seen. Found about 50 – 100 meters from shore, this reef is BURSTING with life. It’s a deep drop, and the wall is home to all kinds of colorful fish and corals. I didn’t know where to look because there were too many fish (the picture doesn’t do this justice) !

Fishes in Balicasag Reef

Balicasag Island is a small island with a few eateries. The beach isn’t extraordinary, but there are a few turtles that hang out on the shallows which you can check out. After checking out the turtles, you’re pretty much forced to buy and eat lunch on the island (lunch is not included on most tours) .

Turtle in Balicasag

Overall, the dolphins and the Balicasag Reef make it worth it.

Prices when it comes to island hopping are all over the place. I went with GoPanglao’s joiner tour for php999, but you can find joiner tours anywhere along Alona Beach.

If you want a private boat (which I recommend for bigger groups to avoid the crowd) , you can also book online here .

Things to do in Bohol – Explore Panglao

Panglao Church

I’ll be honest, Panglao’s spots aren’t the most spectacular.

Nonetheless, since most of you are going to be staying there already, why not explore it?

There are some organized tours you can join, but renting a motorbike and seeing the spots on your own is the way to go.

Panglao’s spots include:

  • Hinagdanan Cave
  • Dauis Church
  • Bohol Bee Farm
  • Shell Museum

Hinagdanan Cave is the main event of the Panglao land tour, and for good reason. It’s a very unique cave, with a lovely swimming pool. It would’ve been one of my top spots of all time if it wasn’t for the crowd! The cave is relatively small, and on busy times, there are about 30 people jam-packed in the cave.

Hinagdanan Cave

Panglao Church is a cozy place. Nothing spectacular, but it’s a nice place to sit down and watch people go about their business.

Bohol Bee Farm lost all its bees during Typhoon Odette. That said, they still serve their famous ice cream in a casava cone for php80. The Bee Farm also has a pasalubong store, a cafe, and a restaurant. Not a must-visit, but a cool place to go if you have time.

Bohol Bee Farm entrance

Finally, the Shell Museum is exactly what it sounds like. I didn’t get to visit, so I can’t say much. But if this is your type of thing, definitely go check it out!

Things to do in Bohol – Try Freediving

Bohol is one of the freediving hot spots in the Philippines.

There are a bunch of instructors and schools based in Panglao, so it’s very easy to get into it here. And there are great spots to go freediving too.

I tried freediving in the Napaling Reef, which is home to the famous orange Napaling crack.

You can try freediving by yourself. Or, if you want to learn how to do it properly, enroll in one of the many freediving schools around Panglao!

Things to do in Bohol – Chase Waterfalls

Kawasan Falls in Balilihan

Bohol isn’t as well-known for waterfalls as Siquijor or South Cebu, but they do have their fair share of beautiful ones!

And here’s a little secret:

Bohol’s Camugao Falls is one of my favorites of all time.

Camugao Falls

The tall falls, the green water, and the lovely swimming area were something I would go back for over and over again (even though it was out of the way) .

Aside from Camugao, Bohol also has Kawasan (not the same as the one in Cebu) , Pahangog (not too far away from Bilar) , and Can Umantad Falls (found in the Anda area) . All of which are worth a visit!

Things to do in Bohol – Visit Anda

Waves in a beach

Again, I’m going to write an entire blog post about the East side of Bohol because it’s almost a completely different destination.

But if ever you’ve explored the main spots in Bohol, and you still have a few days left, a quick trip to Anda is a great way to spend your time!

Anda is one of the most laid-back beach towns I’ve ever been to.

Plus, the towns beside it are full of exciting spots to visit like:

  • Cabagnow and other cave pools
  • Quinale Beach
  • The Alicia Panoramic Hills
  • Can-Umantad Falls, the tallest in Bohol
  • Cadapdapan Rice Terraces
  • Canawa Cold Spring

Cabagnow Cave Pool in Anda

And many other lesser-known spots!

Bohol Sample Itineraries (and Budgets)

Bohol is an island you can stay in for weeks and weeks and never run out of things to do.

I stayed on the island for 10 days, and that didn’t feel nearly enough.

That said, if you’re short on time, here’s how you can make the most out of it.

You can see all the highlights in 2 days, but I’d say the minimum to enjoy the island is 3 days.

Sample 3-Day Bohol Itinerary and Budget = php5,785

Here’s how I would explore Bohol if I had only 3 days and wanted to go as cheaply as possible!

Day 1 – Arrival and Countryside Tour

Notes: if you don’t want to rent a motorcycle and explore on your own, there are several countryside tour providers . You can book online or when you arrive in Bohol.

Day 2 – Island Hopping / Explore Panglao

Notes: If you’re traveling with more than 3 people, I highly recommend getting a private boat instead of doing joiner tours. We almost missed the dolphins because of our late start! You can book island hopping tours online or anywhere along Alona Beach (there are LOTS of them).

You can also book private Panglao tours , but I recommend renting a motorbike and going to see the spots yourself.

Day 3 – Waterfalls and Chill

Notes: On the third and last day, there’s a bunch of different things you can go for. I personally recommend checking out some waterfalls (since they’re super underrated), but you can just as easily go see the Whale Sharks, or visit the Danao Adventure Park for a bungee jump.

Sample 4-Day Bohol Itinerary

If you’re staying for four days, I’d do most of what’s listed above, but I’d also throw in a day for either scuba diving or freediving!

Here’s how I’d do it:

Day 1 – Countryside Tour

Day 2 – Island Hopping and Explore Panglao

Day 3 – Scuba Dive or Freedive, Chill in Dumaluan

Day 4 – Chasing Waterfalls and Exit

If you’re not into trying diving, you can also head to Lila Bohol and go whale shark watching, which is similar to the one they have in Oslob Cebu. You can also book this tour online here.

Sample 5-Day Bohol Itinerary

If you’re staying for five days, you can either add an extra day to completely relax. Or, you can split your trip into 3 days in the Panglao area, and 2 days in the Anda area.

Here’s what that’d look like:

Day 1 – Countryside Tour

Day 3 – Chase Waterfalls, transfer to Anda

Day 4 – Cave pools, waterfalls, rice terraces

Day 5 – Hike Alicia Panoramic Hills, swim in Canawa Cold Spring, exit Bohol

As always… I’ll write a detailed guide on Anda soon, so stay tuned! (I’ll link it here if it’s done)

Where to Go After Bohol

That’s almost everything you need to know about Bohol.

The last question (before the FAQs) to answer is where should you go after Bohol???

Bohol is quite a hub, and there are 3 really cool destinations that you can easily get to from Bohol.

Cambugahay Falls

Siquijor is my favorite island in the entire Philippines!

It’s a magical place with beautiful waterfalls, lovely beaches, unique spots, and great diving too.

There are direct ferries from Bohol to Siquijor that only take 2 hours. The most popular one is run by OceanJet.

You can book tickets online here, head to any booking office in Panglao, or book directly in the Tagbilaran pier.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend visiting Siquijor. You won’t regret it!

You can read my full Siquijor travel guide here !

White Island during sunrise

One crazily underrated island is Camiguin.

With some of the most beautiful forests and white-sand beaches I’ve ever seen, Camiguin is another must-visit island.

A lot of people don’t know that there’s a direct ferry from Bohol to Camiguin.

It leaves from the town of Jagna, which is about 1.5 hours away from Tagbilaran. To get there, you can ride a bus from the Dao Terminal in Tagbilaran.

The ferry only runs once a day. You can check schedules and book online here , or you can book directly at the port.

Check out my Camiguin travel guide to help with your planning!

South Cebu (Oslob & Moalboal)

Sunset in Moalboal

Finally, there’s South Cebu.

In Oslob, you can swim with the whale sharks and check out Tumalog Falls, while Moalboal is famous for its sardine run.

South Cebu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines, so it makes a lot of sense to combine visiting Bohol and South Cebu in one go.

The great news?

There’s a direct ferry from Momo Beach in Panglao to Quartel Beach in Oslob!

That’s right.

No need to travel all the way to Tagbilaran and Cebu City anymore.

The ferry is run by Apekop Travel, and it currently leaves back and forth once a day. You can check updated schedules and book online, find a travel agency, or book at the port (there are limited seats so I recommend booking ahead ) .

Check out my Moalboal travel guide here !

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling Bohol

Last but not least!

Let’s get to some frequently asked questions about traveling Bohol.

If you can’t find the answer to your question here, do leave a comment down below and I’ll get right back to you.

Let’s go.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Bohol?

The best time to visit Bohol is around January to March. The dry season runs from December to May, while the wet season runs from June to November.

Keep in mind that Philippine weather is very unpredictable, so there can be storms during the dry season, and there can be long, sunny weeks during the rainy season!

January to March is the best time to visit because not only is it dry, but December, April, and May are peak seasons, so there can be a LOAD of tourists.

However, no matter what your schedule is, my advice is to just go! You’re never going to time the weather perfectly, so don’t stress too much about it.

How Long Should You Stay in Bohol?

You should stay in Bohol for at least 3 – 4 days. 2 days is passable, but super rushed, while 5 days may be too slow for some people.

That said, you can stay in Bohol for 10 days like I did, or you can stay for months. You’ll find out very quickly once you’re here that there are a gazillion things to do and see!

What is Bohol Famous For?

Bohol is famous for the Chocolate Hills! If there’s only one thing you can do in Bohol, it should be to go and see these hills.

They’re super unique and iconic.

Can You Drive Around the Whole Bohol?

Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Bohol is a HUGE island, and it’d take you almost a whole day of nonstop driving to get around the whole island (not to mention the interior) .

If ever you plan to do this, make sure to stop by and stay in some popular towns like Carmen and Anda.

What is Bohol’s Pasalubong Item?

Bohol’s most famous pasalubong, or gift, item is Kalamay. Made from coconut, sugar, and glutinous rice, it’s popularly sold inside coconut shells.

If you’ve never tried it, you have to! It’s sweet, delicious, and super unique.

Ready to Travel Bohol?

And there you have it!

Thank you for reading my Bohol travel guide! This took a lot of work to create, and my wish is that it’ll be useful for your trip.

Bohol is one of my favorite islands of all time, and I’m so excited that you’re going to visit.

So go and start planning away!

I’m SO excited for you!

Bohol: Exploring the Gem of Central Visayas

Welcome to  Bohol , the Philippines’ most whimsical island – from its colourful fiestas, to the 1,268  Chocolate Hills , its top-notch white-sand beaches, dolphin watching, diving, river cruising, tarsiers, Filipino-Spanish heritage houses and churches, an interesting history and warm and welcoming people- it is safe to say that Bohol is quite the Philippines in a nutshell.

The Province of Bohol is best known for two things: The Philippine Tarsier which is the smallest primate in the world and the over a thousand intriguing perfectly cone-shaped hills of similar sizes spread out over 50 square kilometres in the island’s centre scattered over in the towns of Batuan, Carmen and Sagbayan. This hills are lovingly called  Chocolate Hills  (below)- since the grass and vegetation dries out and the hills looked a lot like huge chocolate mounds baking under the tropical sun. The hills are conical karst in nature, which is pretty similar to those seen in the limestone regions of Croatia and Slovenia sans the caves. It is so that the words Bohol, Tarsiers and the Chocolate Hills are so synonymous that one cannot mention Bohol in the same sentence without mentioning the other two. And if that is not enough, chances are you will be able to pick up a souvenir shirt on your way home with Bohol written along with the images of the Philippine Tarsier and the Chocolate Hills emblazoned in front. There are Philippine Tarsier conservation areas located along your way to the Chocolate Hills from Tagbilaran City, the provincial capital. This is where one can check out these nocturnal creatures hanging in the branches of trees along the winding Loboc River.

Speaking of Loboc River, it has become a must for visitors to take the approximately PhP300 lunch cruise (Filipino cuisine) along the green waters of the river which terminates near a couple of small waterfalls. The cruise usually includes an in-house singer, usually a kid from the local school choir, the Loboc Children’s Choir. The choir gained national and international attention, when it bagged the First Prize and the Festival Cup at the 6th International Folksongs Festival held in Barcelona, Spain.

There isn’t a lack of historical places in Bohol for the history-buffs. One can drop by at the second-oldest stone church in the Philippines (oldest is San Agustin in Intramuros, Manila) – Baclayon Church (above), 6 kilometres away from Tagbilaran City. The church has beautiful antique crystal chandeliers, silver tabernacle, an ornately carved pulpit and an altar with gold inlays. Close to the church is the town of Loay, the original site of the blood compact between local Chief Sikatuna and Spanish Captain Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The blood compact, known as Pacto de Sangre in Spanish and Sandugo in Filipino is celebrated in a festival in July of every year.

For the beach bums and sun-worshippers, Bohol boasts of world-class white sand beaches especially in the nearby corraline island of Panglao of which Alona Beach and Dumaluan Beach are the better known. For divers, Alona Beach (above) is definitely the best place to base oneself, where dive shops and resorts from budget to upper midrange hotels are located. The main drawback is that this tiny strip of beach is such a small community that touts would harass you at every opportunity. Expect to get asked for boat rides and island hopping over 20 times in 24 hours. If Boracay is bad, Alona Beach is the worst when it comes to touts. Food on this beach is overpriced and the taste is not exactly mind-blowing. A heap of boats are also anchored not far from the shore, thus, the ocean scenery is obstructed. In complete contrast, Dumaluan Beach on the same island, has fewer resorts (there are only two- the more expensive Bohol Beach Club and the super-cheap Dumaluan Beach Resort), and has a wider and cleaner beach.

There are at least 13 dive sites around Bohol, with Pamilacan and Balicasag sites the most popular with dolphin-watching an added attraction. Pamilacan Island has an almost year-round convergence point of mackerel, tuna, dolphins, groupers, and hammerhead sharks as well as endemic species of dolphins, melon-headed whales, beaked whales, and the gasp (!), sperm whale. No wonder studies by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program in coordination with over 100 marine scientists placed the Philippines at the centre of the world’s marine biodiversity with 26,000 square kilometres of coral reef with the highest concentration of marine species per unit area. That’s nothing short like having the Amazon underwater. Up until now, new species are being discovered off the coast of Bohol as with many other research stations all over the Philippines.

Where to Stay

My to do list

  • Hire a van and check out the Chocolate Hills (Never forget the local ice-cream with Pinipig- immature glutinous rice that is harvested, pounded and lightly toasted, similar to Rice Crispies only better, and more fragrant) being sold at the base of the viewing area*
  • Have picture taken with a Philippine Tarsier (Remember to turn off your flash- as the flash can hurt the animal’s eyes)*
  • Lunch at the Loboc River Cruise**
  • Chill out at the Dumaluan Beach*
  • Watch the dolphins at Pamilacan Island **
  • Dive! Dive! Dive!*
  • Check out ‘Prony’- the 14 year old Reticulated Python- the world’s largest python in captivity- in Upper Santa Fe, Alburquerque town (The singing tranny is an added attraction)*

*- Highly Recommended **- Recommended by Locals

Stay Away From

  • Mosquitoes! These blood-sucking critters are present especially during dinners by the beach, have some ready insect repellent lotion handy. For other bugs, ask the hotel staff to do some spraying to contain problems
  • Stray animals: dogs – rabies is prevalent all over the Philippines. Touts and vendors are a major headache on Alona Beach, but not so much at Dumaluan Beach. Prostitutes (usually Filipinos, and possibly Koreans from nearby Cebu) are usually found around the Alona Beach area but not a total bother.

Getting There

Philippine Airlines flies to Tagbilaran from Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport- Centennial Terminal 2) to the old Tagbilaran Airport. Budget carrier Cebu Pacific also flies the same route, except major delays are frequent and refunding your ticket with Cebu Pacific will take months, if ever you will actually get refunded in the end. Cebu Pacific flies via the new Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (right). Zest Airways (formerly Asian Spirit) also fly to Tagbilaran. Please check their respective websites for more details like flight frequency, schedules, and fares.

For those coming by boat (usually via Cebu), there are heaps of daily trips.

Other ships coming in from Manila, Cagayan de Oro City, Dipolog, Larena, Plaridel, Iligan City, and Ozamis City also sail to Tagbilaran.

Tricycles are the primary means of transport around Tagbilaran City and environs, while vans and a trickle of taxis (sedans) are available for rent. Within Panglao Island, men with motorbikes are also available for hire to go around.

11 Amazing Reasons to Visit Bohol, Philippines

Chocolate hills, Bohol, Philippines

While most tourists head over to the province of Bohol to catch sight of the world-famous Chocolate Hills, many are often surprised to discover tons of activities to do on the island. Apart from the picturesque landscape, first-time visitors will love its pristine white-sand beaches, jungle activities, and unique food delicacies.

The chocolate hills.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

Primarily, local and foreign tourists should see for themselves what makes The Chocolate Hills a bucket list-worthy destination in the Philippines. That’s because these hills stay true to their moniker. It’s called the Chocolate Hills because the hills turn chocolatey brown in color when their grass withers during the summer season. And, while the hills do vary in size, it seems like they’re almost symmetrical in shape when viewed from afar. It’s a fascinating sight and might make anyone think it’s really a product of natural forces and not a man-made creation.

The Philippine Tarsier

Next to The Chocolate Hills, first-time visitors can also look forward to meeting the world’s smallest primate – the Philippine Tarsiers . While the species are endemic to the Southeast Asian country, these nocturnal creatures can only be found in the islands of Bohol , Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao. And due to habitat destruction, hunting, and other forms of human disturbance, tarsiers have become endangered in the country, too. If you’d like to see them in their natural habitat, visit the Tarsius syrichta species clinging to branches in Bohol’s Tarsier Conservation Area.

Amazing creatures

Dolphin watching in Bohol

Apart from being home to the Philippine tarsiers, Bohol’s lush environment is also a haven to a number of creatures such as dolphins and whales, several turtle species, bees, and butterflies to name a few. In some resorts, they offer whale-watching and dolphin-watching as part of their tourist activities. You’ll spot these sea creatures around Pamilacan Island and if you’d like to visit the turtles and let them be your swimming companions, you’d better head over to Balicasag Island Marine Sanctuary. Bohol Bee Farm is where you’ll find the bees, whereas hundreds of butterflies can be found in the Butterfly Garden in Bilar.

Unique food delicacies & great cuisine

Flower Salad at Bohol Bee Farm

Speaking of the Bohol Bee Farm, it’s not just home to the buzzing bees but also serves delicious organic food at its very own restaurant. The restaurant stays true to what they’re all about and you’ll be able to order dishes made out of organic ingredients such as flower salad, vegetarian pasta, and seafood soup. Of course, the Bee Farm’s restaurant isn’t the only one you should visit. Check out Gerarda’s in Tagbilaran (one of the most visited restaurants in Bohol) for some Filipino food with a twist and dishes that have both Asian and Spanish influences. And, don’t you dare miss the floating restaurant in Loboc!

White sand beaches

Alona Beach, Philippines

While Boracay is the Philippines’ national pride when it comes to stunning and white sand beaches, Bohol should not be overlooked when searching for amazing beaches in the country . Bohol’s Panglao island has become a top beach destination in the country for its beautiful white-sand beaches, stunning coral reefs, and world-class diving spots for beach lovers. Its clean waters are also said to be “better than Boracay,” according to a government official. The most well-known beach in the area is Alona Beach , as tourists can’t help but fall in love with its long stretch of powdery white sand.

Watersports & extreme adventures

Paddleboarding in Bohol

When in Bohol, you’ll realize it’s not just about the sights and tourist spots but also immersing yourself in various activities such as water sports and extreme adventures. Here, you can experience paddleboarding, diving, windsurfing, zip-lining, ATV, and rock climbing. If you’d like to experience those activities, better check out Aqua Sports of The Bellevue Resort, Danao Adventure Park, and Chocolate Hills Adventure Park to unleash your inner adrenaline-junkie and test your nerves with outdoor recreational activities.

Breathtaking views

Panglao Island, Bohol, Philippines

Apart from the magnificent view brought by The Chocolate Hills, there are numerous scenic views to enjoy when visiting Bohol. Be fascinated by the breathtaking views on Panglao Island’s beaches and capture the best panoramic views at Tarsier Paprika while having a taste of European dishes. And, for the best sunset and sunrise view in Alona Beach of Panglao, you might want to visit Amorita Beach Resort – where you can catch a wondrous sunrise view by the pool and watch the sunset from their outdoor area.

Laidback ambiance

Bohol, Philippines

While there are a number of bars and clubs to be found in Bohol (specifically in Alona Beach), nightlife on the entire province is not as loud and crazy as you might expect. There are chill places where you can simply enjoy some great music, good food, and a relaxing atmosphere. Of course, for those seeking solace and some quiet nights, it’s a good idea to relax on the beachfront or by the pool. Forget the hustle and bustle of the city and just enjoy the night with a drink.

Closer to nature

Traditional raft boat, Loboc at Bohol Island, Philippines

One of the many reasons why both foreign and local tourists keep coming back to Bohol is its ability to connect visitors with nature. Within the province of Bohol, there are nature spots that surround one with lush greens, crystal clear waters, and let you discover rich flora and fauna indigenous to the island. For instance, you’ll get a breath of fresh air at the man-made Mahogany Forest while getting a closer look at those giant roots. There’s a secret waterfall (better ask local guides where it is) where you can jump off a tall cliff and the Hinagdanan (which means laddered in English) Cave – one of the island’s best adventure spots.

Remnants of history

Blood compact site in Bohol

Bohol also plays an important role in Philippine history as it witnessed a very important event during the Spanish era – the Blood Compact between Miguel Lopez de Legazpi of Spain and Rajah Sikatuna of Bohol. With a few drops of blood, it served as the First Treaty of Friendship between the two leaders despite having different races, culture, and religious beliefs. In honor of the Sandugo (blood compact in English), National Artist Napoleon Abueva, who’s a Bohol native, made the sculpture which was placed in Barangay Bool in Tagbilaran City. Within Bohol, there are also historical churches that exhibit Spanish presence marked by frescoes, carvings, and stone churches of the 15th century.

Friendly locals

Filipino children strike a pose

Just like in any other place in the Philippines, foreign visitors admire the country’s locals for their warmth, kindness, and hospitality. Most locals of Bohol are very welcoming and will extend help without asking anything in return. If you find yourself lost, ask a local and get instant help. Or, if you’re looking for the province’s best-kept secret destinations, seek help from a local guide who will be keen to take you there. Enjoy the countryside tour, the wondrous sights, and mingle with friendly locals who’ll make your trip worth remembering!

Not only Bohol’s most famous sight but also one of the Philippines’ most popular sights, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Chocolate Hills are a must-see. Located in the centre of the island is a vast landscape of over 1,000 almost identical and symmetrical mounds.

During the rainy season, from June to November, the hills are carpeted in lush velvety green. But come the hot, dry season the hills change into a soft cocoa shade, making them look like mounds of chocolate. There’s a special viewing platform from where you can see right out over the expanse of hills or you can hike among them.

The Abatan River is located just north of the capital of Bohol – Tagbilaran City. Flanked by mangrove swamps, the river is prime firefly spotting territory. Paddling along at night with the dancing lights of the fireflies to guide you like twinkling stars is quite a magical experience. For those who don’t want to kayak or those with small kids, there are boat tours offered too.

If you want to see what’s possible when it comes to conservation, take a trip to Bohol’s man-made forest. Not far from the town of Loboc, the forest of hundreds of towering mahogany trees was planted by the local government as part of a reforestation project around 50 years ago. There are hiking trails that snake through the woods and up onto the hillside so you can admire its beauty. It’s also a popular spot for cycling.

See one of the world’s smallest primates – the tarsiers. These small bush baby-like creatures are known for their huge round eyes. They are found on at least four different Philippine islands, but by far the best place to see them is Bohol. While there are several different locations, the best is the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, where tarsiers live in the wild, in a large swathe of protected forest.

Located on Panglao Island, Hinagdanan Cave is one of the most fascinating caves in Bohol. Stalactites hang from a cavernous interior over a blue lagoon. Tours of the cave even allow for a quick swim in the incredibly blue water. While today it’s more of a natural attraction, in the past the cave was used as a place to hide from Japanese soldiers during the Second World War.

The Philippines offers some of the best diving and snorkelling on the planet and Bohol is no exception. One of the best things to do in Bohol is to explore underneath the waves off Panglao Island, southwest of the main island. Both the Panglao Reef and the Napaling Reef are excellent spots.

As well as multi-coloured reef fish, they’re home to manta and eagle rays, green sea turtles, barracudas, jackfish and in the right season, thousands upon thousands of sardines. Napaling Reef is particularly known as a great freediving location.

Where to stay on Pangloa Island:

The stylish Amorita Resort , the sumptuous Eskaya Beach Resort and the contemporary Maribago (Bluewater) Panglao Resort are all situated on the island’s south coast, within easy reach of the Panglao Reef. Bohol Beach Club , with its thatched roof buildings located directly on the white sand beach, is also a great option.

The Rough Guide to the Philippines

Boat cruise on Loboc River, Bohol Island © Claudia travelling/Shutterstock

Flanked by emerald green forests and tall palms, the Loboc River is one of the most popular Bohol tourist spots. It winds its way from the coast at Loay up into the centre of the island among the Taytay Hills. One of the best ways to see it is aboard a long wooden boat that peacefully floats downriver from just south of the town of Loboc. Many of the boat tours include a huge local buffet of local delights that you can enjoy while admiring the natural beauty of the river.

Bohol is one of the best Philippines islands for dolphin watching. This is because of the deep waters south of the island in the Bohol Sea. One of the best places to see them is Pamilacan Island, located just south of the area between the main island of Bohol and Panglao Island.

Several different tour companies can take you out to see them, either from Baclayon on the mainland or on Panglao Island itself. The best time to see them is at dawn or at dusk when the dolphins are at their most playful and jump in the glow of the changing light.

Also known as the Dimiao Twin Falls, the Pahangog Falls are one of the best waterfalls on Bohol Island. Hidden deep in the forest of Brgy, the falls can be reached via a lovely hike. The hike down takes you through a lush jungle with views of rice terraces in the background. Once you arrive, you’ll find not one, but two falls, plunging into a clear blue pool, hence the nickname Twin Falls. In the end, you can reward yourself with a refreshing dip.

The tiny island of Balicasag is situated off the tip of the Panglao Reef and is another excellent spot for diving and snorkelling in Bohol. You’ll need to hire someone to take you over in a boat or book a dive or snorkel tour to get there. The sanctuary consists of several submarine cliffs which plunge into the depths, covered in bright corals and sponges.

The most common types of fish you’ll see here are jacks, mackerel and barracudas, while huge napoleon wrasse fish, groupers and snappers live further down below. If you’re here in December or January, you may even be treated to the sight of both hammerhead and whale sharks.

Anda beach in Philippines © Ekaterina McClaud/Shutterstock

Anda beach, Bohol Island Philippines © Ekaterina McClaud/Shutterstock

Bohol and its small islets are surrounded by idyllic tropical beaches, but one of the best is Anda Beach, situated on the eastern coast on a small peninsula. Its fine, powdery white sand gleams almost like snow against the deep blue of the clear sea and the bottle-green jungle behind.

Where to stay near Anda Beach:

For a longer stay, book yourself in at the Magic Islands Dive Resort , where small thatched chalets sit around a lovely pool. This is another great spot for diving and snorkelling. The resort even has its dive centre where you can rent equipment, go on dive excursions or even take your PADI course and learn.

It’s not only islands like Luzon that are home to picturesque rice terraces. You can see them in Bohol too. Cascading down the hillsides like jewel-green waterfalls studded with palm trees, they’re quite a sight to behold. After your hike through the terraces, you can cool down with a refreshing swim in the nearby Can-umantad Falls.

The Philippines is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. There’s no better place to get close to nature – and embark on wild adventures – than the island province of Bohol.

Rebranding Bohol tourism

BUSINESS OPTIONS

bohol tourism tagline

But Bohol perhaps needs to metamorphose into a higher level by redefining its target market and addressing its narratives to the new mindsets. It, therefore, launched its new directions with Four F's slogan: Faith, Fitness, Food and Fiesta.

There is a huge "Faith Tourism" market exemplified by the hordes of tourists (Filipinos and foreigners) going on spiritual excursions into the Holy Land and the Vatican for the Roman Catholics.

The storyline of the destroyed and then rejuvenated centuries-old churches in Bohol always fascinates the audience linking it to the people's indomitable faith that refuses to wilt under strong calamities like the fiercest 7.2 scaled earthquakes that ripped Bohol in 2013, followed by "Yolanda". Attraction to such restored heritage icons is intense because there are many people with very strong religious fervor.

The fabled century-old churches in Maribojoc, Loon and Loboc have been fully restored while the  Baclayon, Albuquerque and the city's St. Joseph's Cathedral remain intact. There is a faint, unique smell getting near these churches akin to viewing the imposing churches in Europe and the Vatican - a heritage left behind the Spanish fervor of world conquest, spiritually and politically. And people visit and then revisit the iconic Chocolate Hills.

And this has always been Bohol's main target market - the matured, not-so-young adults who never tire of our staple tourist offerings.

But the world is getting younger and that market has the energy and the money to spend on travel and recreation. That market Bohol must begin to address.

But Bohol is not trying to copycat Boracay which has become a "party island" where hip-hop, rock, gyrating dances and noise are omnipresent. As if the night is the last festive evening in their youthful lives.

That's just not its cup of tea. Bohol is still an ideal quiet family destination but it does not mean it will not excite the adrenaline of the youth as a " clean fun destination". There is such an animal as a "sports-action" destination.

Include such competition as the "Iron Man" or triathlon (running, biking and swimming). Scuba diving needs further marketing beyond Balincasag island and other sites already featured in picturesque splendor in international diving magazines. The one they are developing in Jagna bears watching, as well. The circumferential road that surrounds the picturesque fringes of the island can be a "Tour of Bohol" cycling competition site.

Of course, there is the nearby "Swimming with the Whales" in the seawaters of Lila, especially for the city folks who have not even seen live whales in their sheltered lives. The satisfaction is immensely more than just waking up early to catch and watch the whales off Panglao island which is already a "hit" among witnesses.

Bohol has held "Dragon Boat" competitions. It just needs to expand further its reach and promotion. There are scores of zipline thrill adventures on the island.

The newest sports sensation is "paragliding" where sites in Laca and Bunga-Ilaya in Jagna are already developed (70 percent done) for launch by December this year. The point is that Bohol needs to eke its share of the stupendous, dynamic youth market.

Often commenting are young Manilenos saying that "yes, Papa and Tito want to visit and revisit Bohol"- defining a target market we have been stuck with for years. This is the time to tap the huge millennial market which is full of dynamism to see and explore places as part of their personal adventure to tell others about.

"Behold Bohol" can remain an anthem but with a new spunk and flavor tilted to the young therefore laced with enthusiasm and action-packed.

The month of May highlights Bohol in the sense that almost every day there is a town fiesta being celebrated with all the revelry and pomp like a local Mardi Gras. Each town has a cathedral and a patron saint with stories intertwined about the construction of the church and the veneration of the miracles of the saint as told by the old folks.

Each town is also developing its own "unique food staple" to complete over new forty new ones (per town) above the famous peanut kisses, ube jam, Calamay and chocolates from the world-class entrepreneur Doloreich Polot.

As a fitting prelude to all these initiatives, Bohol tourist stakeholders are moving out fast from the "we are not yet out of the pandemic paranoia". Restaurants and bars are enjoined to end their pandemic schedule of making their places like deserted platforms at strike 10 in the evening. With Covid-19 gone, tourists expect to see the lights and the music still on until midnight. It is not against the Ten Commandments, for goodness sake.

The latest news is that Bohol has just been nominated for the UNESCO Global Geopark for its rare geologic monuments (Chocolate Hills, for one), biodiversity, rich cultural heritage and tourist sites managed in a "holistic and sustained manner." That would be a major shot in the arm for tourism.

Meanwhile, the Bohol Panglao International Airport will shortly be turned over from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP)  to a  qualified private sector group (Aboitiz) since the airport is very underutilized. With its runway lights, the airport is capable of receiving flights 24 hours a day. But up to today, there are still only about 15 flights daily and just one night flight and one international flight from Korea.

Bohol has shown its resiliency to bounce back from the earthquake, typhoons "Yolanda"" and the recent "Odette". Now its flagship industry, tourism,  is being rebranded to lead Bohol back to full economic recovery.

Panglao Island’s rich marine biodiversity

bohol tourism tagline

The island province Bohol is one of the most-visited destinations in the Philippines’ Central Visayas region, and for good reason.

Bohol, like many destinations across the world, might look a little different currently without the steady footfall of visitors, but its outdoor adventures and attractions are as extraordinary as ever.

bohol tourism tagline

After months of preparation, Bohol tourism is up and running again. Since December 2020, the island has followed in the footsteps of Boracay, the first Philippines destination to reopen, and welcomed a small but growing number of domestic visitors as part of it's safe, sealed travel bubbles.

Bohol has the facilities and systems in place to ensure peace of mind. The island boasts two testing facilities, including a containerized COVID-19 testing lab in Tagbilaran City. All travelers flying into Bohol-Panglao International Airport must provide a negative result on a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, or RT-PCR test, as well as medical certification issued within 48 hours before arrival. Several dozen hotels have received official certification from the government, allowing them to get back to business, too.

Broader plans in the works will ensure safe—and sustainable—travel even after the pandemic passes. The Ultimate Bohol Experience (UBE) seal will be given to destinations deemed anti-COVID compliant. They are also giving the UBE badge to establishments that meet certain environmental standards measuring their ecological footprint, an effort aimed at protecting Bohol’s natural attractions decades down the line.

How Bohol is keeping you safe

All travelers flying into Bohol-Panglao International Airport must provide a negative result on a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test (RT-PCR) within 72 hours before arrival. Flights must be booked within 72 hours of a negative test.

Travelers must have a confirmed booking with a hotel located in the municipalities of Panglao or Dauis that has a Certificate of Authority to Operate (CAO) from the Department of Tourism or the Ultimate Bohol Experience (UBE) seal & All tours must be pre-booked with DOT-accredited tour operators.

Travelers must receive a Travel Coordination Permit via the Safe, Swift and Smart Passage system, also known as the S-paSS. The travel management application provides the latest updates and information regarding current restrictions for users.

Travelers must register their trips on tourism.bohol.gov.ph; they will be sent information, instructions, and an individual S-paSS which will be used as an electronic ID via email.

Tourism-centered businesses that wish to reopen must obtain the UBE badge (certificate), confirming adherence to provincial and national health, safety and sanitation protocols. This UBE badge is also given to establishments that meet legislated health, carrying capacity and environmental standards.

The vaccination rollout continues at a steady pace, with 96.6% of frontline healthcare workers and 58.95% of frontline tourism workers having received their first jab as of August 22, 2021.

This makes exploring places like the  Chocolate Hills more rewarding than ever

bohol tourism tagline

These must-see geological wonders cover 50 square kilometers on Bohol. Steeped in lore, the conical karst hills are carpeted in lush green grass that turns brown in the dry summer season, giving them their name. More than 1,200 of these striking hills span as far as the eye can see from the quiet town of Carmen.

On the way to or from the Chocolate Hills, most travelers make a pitstop at the Bilar Manmade Forest. Cool and shaded, this two-kilometer green corridor, part of a reforestation project that began more than 50 years ago, surrounds travelers with red and white mahogany trees. It is little wonder this beautiful space has become a popular spot for mountain bikers, photographers and even filmmakers.

bohol tourism tagline

After you visit the Chocolate Hills, you can go for the real thing at Dalareich Chocolate House too.

Bohol’s first bean-to-bar chocolate maker began as a humble mom-and-pop operation. Now, it boasts a nationwide footprint and accolades from major international chocolate competitions. You can learn all about the chocolate-making process at the company factory, or you can experience it from the ground up—Dalareich offers tours that begin with activities at a cacao farm and end with tastings of the brand’s signature hot chocolate and single-origin chocolate bars back at the factory.

Beyond Bohol’s most photogenic locations,

Adventure awaits.

bohol tourism tagline

Along the Loboc River, travelers can sign up for all kinds of eco-friendly activities. Stand-up paddleboarding tours let you explore the river at your own pace. Year-round, thatched-roof boat cruises ply the waters, offering cultural performances and buffet feasts as you soak up the surrounding nipa trees and coconut palms on the way to peaceful Loctob Spring and Busay Falls.

If you’re looking to boost your adrenaline, visit the Loboc Ecotourism Adventure Park for full days of action-packed activities, like zipline and cable car rides high above the jungle canopy.

bohol tourism tagline

Hungry for more? Visit South Farm, which offers farm-to-table meals, fun and educational activities for the whole family, nature walks, handicrafts for sale and more within a rustic resort landscape.

Launched when the pandemic ground tourism to a halt, Bohol’s newest organic farm project has turned hotel workers into potters, farmers, woodworkers and educators. While the farm grows organic fruit, vegetables and herbs for South Palms Resort and North Zen Villas, it also champions sustainability and eco-tourism. It’s made of upcycled and natural materials, and it aims to bring you back to the island’s roots through workshops that teach you how to make clay pottery, native baskets and even essential coconut oil the traditional way. Kids will love spending time with the farm’s rabbits and guinea pigs, and the whole space is primed for photo ops, too.

bohol tourism tagline

No trip to Bohol is complete without a visit to Panglao Island. One of the first destinations in Central Visayas to restart tourism activities under strict hygiene and safety measures, the ever-popular island boasts incredible coral reefs teeming with a huge diversity of marine life. Postcard-perfect beaches, such as Alona Beach, Libaong White Beach and Panglao Beach, offer space of your own under the sun, as well as access to snorkeling, diving and dolphin-watching day trips on the ocean.

Taking measured steps, Bohol is reopening carefully, eyeing a more sustainable future with the same warmth, smiles and unforgettable experiences as always.

Hi, I’m planning to travel to philippines this year and I’m having a hard time finding any information about where I can go to watch filipino folk dances or even visit tribes and learn about their way of life.

There are many villages you can visit in the Cordillera region. In Banaue for example. In Mindanao, check out Lake Sebu (near General Santos City).

Where sustainability meets heritage: how bohol became the philippines’ first global geopark.

Summer Sanares

‌The island of Bohol has been declared by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the first Global Geopark of the Philippines.‌

Bohol is among the 18 new destinations named in the global geoparks list released last May 24, 2023, during the 216th Executive Board Session of UNESCO in Paris, France. The list includes sites in Greece, Japan, and Norway, with the Philippines and New Zealand, joining the list for the first time.

UNESCO global geoparks are internationally-renowned destinations with a unique geological heritage. According to UNESCO, a global geopark “provides for the social and economic needs of the local populations, protects the landscape in which they live, and conserves their cultural identity”.

‌The designation gives Bohol membership in Global Geoparks Network, which comprises 194 other geoparks worldwide. The community fosters knowledge-sharing and promotes other collaborative activities.

“By adopting the geopark concept, relevant stakeholders from both the public and private sectors are encouraged to work together, fostering the promotion and practice of geoheritage conservation, geoscience education, environmental awareness, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable development within the geopark,” the Bohol Provincial Government added.

. @UNESCO named Bohol the first global geopark of the Philippines for its unique geological identity. The designation will encourage sustainable development in the area. https://t.co/V6qtysSxVZ #BeholdBohol @GoodNewsPinas_ pic.twitter.com/MaMtdBLazt — Summer Sanares (@scvannasummer) May 29, 2023

UNESCO described Bohol as “a prime eco-cultural destination thanks to its white sand beaches, diving spots, magnificent geological formations, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage”. The organization mentioned the distinctive karstic geosites in the area, particularly the Chocolate Hills .

The organization also lent praise to the island’s rare geological phenomena. UNESCO remarked, “The Danajon Double Barrier Reef along the northern coast is the only one of its kind in Southeast Asia and one of just six documented double barrier reefs on Earth.”

“The island’s geological identity has been pieced together over 150 million years, as periods of tectonic turbulence have raised the island from the ocean depths,” UNESCO said. “Its traditions and culture are proof of how its people adapted to their natural environment.”

“May this milestone inspire us more to collaborate for the sustainable development of our geopark and serve as an inspiration for other regions and provinces in the Philippines to follow suit,” the Bohol Provincial Government imparted.

In 2021, the Bohol government established a Communal Garden  to promote sustainable food sources for rural women. Bohol environmentalist Pedro Angco Jr. also created viral artworks advocating for cleaner seas in 2020.

SEND CONGRATULATIONS in the comments below to the people of Bohol for making history as the first global geopark in the Philippines!

Current State of Tourism in Bohol

Bohol has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the tourism industry being one of the hardest hit. The closure of borders and the implementation of quarantine protocols have significantly decreased the number of visitors to the island. Many hotels , restaurants , and tour operators have been forced to close their doors, leaving many locals without jobs.

Despite the challenges, Bohol has been working hard to keep its tourism industry afloat. The province has implemented safety protocols to ensure the well-being of both tourists and locals. For instance, hotels and restaurants are required to follow strict health and safety measures, such as regular disinfection and social distancing.

In addition, the local government has launched several initiatives to encourage domestic tourism. The Bohol Tourism Office has been promoting staycation packages and discounted rates for locals to encourage them to explore the island and support local businesses.

Panglao International Airport expansion

The New Bohol Airport, also known as the Panglao International Airport , opened in 2018. The airport has helped to increase tourism in the province, but plans are already underway to expand the terminal. The second phase of the Bohol International  Airport expansion  project includes expansion of its runway to 2,500m and passenger terminal building to 13,300m² to enhance operational safety at the airport.

The Department of Transportation is planning to build a separate cargo terminal and a parallel taxiway, fuel depot, and fuel hydrant system using the local funds. The plan also includes further extension of the runway to 2,800m.

The Bohol international airport will undergo a PHP3.8bn ($74.4m) project in order to improve passenger flow at terminals, enhance retail and dining experience, and increase the number of flight destinations.

Phase one of the project will include enhancements and installation of internal fit-outs to the existing facilities during 2020 and 2021. Phase two, scheduled between 2026 and 2027, includes optimisation and modification to serve the increased traffic.

Tourism Development Areas

Bohol has identified several tourism development areas to further enhance its tourism industry. These areas include the towns of Panglao , Anda , Talibon , and Tubigon . The local government plans to develop infrastructure in these areas, including the improvement of roads and the construction of new tourism facilities such as resorts, restaurants, and souvenir shops. The goal is to provide tourists with more options and to spread tourism throughout the province.

Heritage and Cultural Sites

Bohol has a rich cultural heritage, and plans are underway to preserve and promote its cultural and historical sites. The local government plans to improve and develop heritage sites such as the Blood Compact Shrine, Baclayon Church, and the Loboc River. The aim is to make these sites more accessible to tourists and to provide them with more information about the history and culture of Bohol.

Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism

Bohol is known for its ecotourism attractions, and the local government plans to further develop sustainable tourism in the province. One of the initiatives is the "Bohol Island Sustainable Tourism Roadmap," which aims to promote sustainable tourism practices and protect the natural environment. The roadmap includes measures such as waste management, renewable energy, and the preservation of biodiversity.

Bohol is a beautiful island province with a lot to offer tourists. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the local government is working hard to keep the tourism industry afloat and to develop new initiatives to attract more visitors to the island. With the upcoming developments, Bohol is set to become an even more popular destination in the near future.

Bohol is one of the most popular and tourist-friendly destinations in the Philippines. This island province in the Central Visayas region attracts visitors from all over the world because of its stunning and diverse attractions with the Chocolate Hills as its most famous tourist spot.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol is a one-of-a-kind geological formation of grass-covered hills that turn brown during the dry season. Bohol is also known as the home of one of the world’s smallest primates, the tarsiers.

Best Time To Go

Dry season - december to may.

The dry season in Bohol starts in December and ends in May, with April having the least chance of rainfall. Understandably, these months are the peak season; they are the ideal time to visit Bohol for hot-weather activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

Getting to Bohol

By air - bohol-panglao international airport.

Bohol is the prime tourist destination for local and foreign travellers. It is accessible from major cities of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.  Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao are the primary island groups of the Philippine archipelago.

The Bohol-Panglao International Airport services the whole Bohol Province which replaced the Tagbilaran International Airport in November 2018

You can fly directly from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila to Bohol-Panglao International Airport. The flight from Manila to Bohol is estimated 1 hour and 15 minutes with daily flights available via Philippine Airlines or Cebu Pacific.

By Sea - Ferry

Another way to reach the island is travelling by sea which has several ferries from Cebu, Dumaguete, Siquijor, Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin going to Bohol via OceanJet, Trans-Asia Shipping Lines, and Super Shuttle Ferry.

From Cebu, the fastest way to reach Bohol is via fast craft and will reach Tagbilaran Port in two hours. OceanJet has several trips from Bohol to Cebu every day.

bohol tourism tagline

Chocolate Hills

Bohol's claim to fame is unique geological formations of over 1000 cone-shaped hills that change in colour depending on the season – the Chocolate Hills. You can view the hills from the Chocolate Hills Complex where there’s a viewing deck with a stunning 360° view of the cone-shaped hills. These giant mounds of chocolate-coloured earth on the dry season that turn green during the wet season are known across the world for their enchanting beauty. The hills are spread out on a 50-square kilometre land and vary in size.

Tarsier Sanctuary

bohol tourism tagline

Like the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers and their big eyes are synonymous to Bohol as well. These nocturnal creatures are considered to be the smallest primate in the world. If it's your first time in Bohol, don't miss a visit to the Tarsier Conservation Area in Loboc or the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella. These tarsier sanctuaries allow tourists not just to see these small creatures up close, but also to learn more about them. Taking their photos is fine but keep the flash turned off not to wake them up. Touching them is also a no-no because it will stress them out.

Loboc River

bohol tourism tagline

One of Bohol’s most beautiful natural attractions is the Loboc River. This beautiful river is a wonder of nature that has been preserved through the combined efforts of the local authorities and the residents. The scenic river that runs through multiple towns in Bohol is framed with lush tropical trees, perfect for winding down in the afternoon after your countryside tour. The most popular activity in the river is the Loboc River Cruise activity, where tourists board a floating restaurant. The boat cruise will drift along the serene 1.5km long river while you feast on a Filipino lunch buffet.

Panglao Island

bohol tourism tagline

Bohol is also known for its white-sand beaches, islands, and diving sites. Panglao island is connected to the main Bohol island by bridges and can be travelled to by land vehicles. This is also where the new airport is located in. The majority of top hotels and resorts in Bohol are situated in Panglao Island. Most tourists who love the sun, sea, and sand stay in this part of the province because of its proximity to pristine beaches and islands.

Balicasag Island

While Bohol already has white sand beaches along its coastline, there are also islands to explore where you can snorkel or dive aside from swimming or sunbathing. A prime diving and snorkeling spot in Bohol because of its precious marine life. Aside from colorful reefs and fishes, you can also spot sea turtles here if you're lucky! Apart from the underwater sights, joining a Balicasag Island tour is worth it as it boasts of a white sand beach that surrounds the whole island where you can lounge in.

Bohol official says tourism code to address overpricing issues

bohol tourism tagline

A PROVINCIAL Board member of Bohol said price regulation for goods and services will be included in the proposed local tourism law after another issue of overcharging, this time involving van drivers.

Board Member Tita V. Baja, chair of the committee on tourism and urban/rural development, said “ regulating the prices or commissions, may be considered in crafting the new Bohol Tourism Code, which is now 90% complete. ”

In a statement from the provincial government, Ms. Baja said one concrete step for regulation is mandatory accreditation from the local government.

Ms. Baja has received reports that van drivers ferrying visitors to Chocolate Hills were demanding high commission from all-terrain vehicle operators while overcharging guests at the same time.

“ Please don ’ t do that, ” she said in the vernacular, noting that such practices would discourage visitors and affect the reputation of Bohol, one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Philippines.

In August, a social media post about excessive pricing on food served at the Virgin Island prompted the provincial government to prohibit dining operations on the island.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday in the town of Dauis for the Department of Tourism ’ s (DoT) rest area project, the sixth so far in the country.

Dauis is strategically situated between Tagbilaran City, the provincial capital, and Panglao, where the international airport and beach destinations are located, DoT said in a statement on Thursday.

The Tourist Rest Area will have an information center, shop for local products, cafe, and restrooms, among other facilities. Rest areas have also been launched in Bukidnon, Davao del Norte, Baguio City, and two towns in Cebu.

Construction will be funded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, while the host local government unit will be in charge of management under the DoT ’ s monitoring.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who led the groundbreaking ceremony, also met with Bohol ’ s tourism stakeholders as part of her nationwide direct consultations initiative.

“ As we move forward in this new era of tourism development, I hope for your continued collaboration in order to usher in the country ’ s economic recovery, ” she told the group.

One of the main concerns raised was strengthening coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on the regulation and preservation of eco-cultural areas in the province, according to DoT.

As of September 30, Bohol recorded more than 222,000 visitors this year, 24% higher than the 179,000 in full year 2021. — MSJ
