New York City Class Trip
New York City reigns supreme as a top destination for class trips and performance groups. There’s so much to see and do, it’s hard to squeeze it all in. Here are just a few highlights…
Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center is great for student groups. It’s a one stop shop for the best of NYC. The observation deck at Top of the Rock is usually less crowded than the Empire State Building and offers a stunning, unobstructed view of the city. The NBC Studios tour is popular with students and tons of fun. If traveling during the winter months, a stop at the ice rink is a must. If traveling during the holidays, the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center is a spectacular must-see!
One World Observatory
One World Observatory at the Westfield World Trade Center is another favorite stop. SkyPod elevators climb 102 stories in 42 seconds for a view like none other!
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum offers a rare opportunity for the youth of today to interact with the heroes of the past. Precious few years remain that will allow younger generations to spend time face to face with those who served on ships like the Intrepid. Capture these teachable moments before they slip away.
Lower East Side Tenement Museum and Ellis Island
The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is a landmark building that tells the story of immigrants to New York City between the 19 th and 21 st centuries through the personal experiences of those who lived here. Couple this experience with a trip to Ellis Island to help students understand the role of immigration in our nation’s evolving identity.
Staten Island Ferry
If you want a great harbor view (and photo op!) of the Statue of Liberty , take your students on the Staten Island Ferry . Leaving approximately every 20 minutes from Battery Park, the free ferry takes you right past the Statue.
Dough and DeKalb Market
NYC has some“sweet” spots. A favorite is “Dough,” located in Brooklyn and the Flatiron District . Dough is known for its legendary and mouthwatering doughnuts. DeKalb Market in Brooklyn is also a great option for all kinds of local flavor – students can taste a little bit of everything!
Manhattan Concert Productions
Your ensemble can perform on stage in famous venues with exceptional guest faculty when you collaborate with Manhattan Concert Productions . They offer experiences you won’t find anywhere else, including the following: Symphonic Series New York City Jazz Festival Masterwork Series These are just a few of the performance possibilities offered through Manhattan Concert Productions, whose goal is to help your group shine brightly in a professional and supportive setting.
The Town Hall has a 1500 seat theatre and hosts thousands of students each year. It’s designated a National Historic Landmark because of the important role it played during the women’s suffrage movement – a unique way to combine history and performance in a place where there’s “not a bad seat in the house.”
Broadway Classroom and Disney Theatrical Workshop
If your goal is to make your students more comfortable and confident on stage, you may want to consider a workshop experience like Broadway Classroom or Disney Theatrical Workshop. Broadway Classroom is a series of workshops designed to engage students in the disciplines of theatre. Popular workshops include Broadway basics, music, choreography and staging, the business of a Broadway career, professional Q & As and an anti-bullying themed class. Workshops are typically 90 minutes and are held in the Broadway rehearsal studios. If your group wants to dig a little deeper into the art of the theatre, try a Disney Theatrical Workshop . Running at an itinerary-friendly 90 minutes, these workshops are led by expert Disney Teaching Artists and allow the group to explore the mechanics of a performance – from on stage to behind the scenes.
Our itineraries are just a starting point for your adventure. We work directly with you to create a student trip that’s perfect for your group. If you want a unique performance or learning experience, we make it happen. Do you need to change days or add an attraction?

Class Trips
The New York Botanical Garden becomes a 250-acre classroom for you and your students to explore. Active learning takes place in three unique sites and across Garden grounds. Students become gardeners in the Ruth Rea Howell Vegetable Garden at the Edible Academy; they become naturalists investigating plant and animal life in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden; and at the GreenSchool in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, students become world explorers examining the glass-enclosed rain forests and deserts. NYBG’s Class Trips offer something for every age group.
All of NYBG’s programs complement classroom learning and support learning standards prescribed by New York City and New York State, and also align with the national Next Generation Science Standards.
We are an outdoor learning environment, and programs run rain or shine. Be sure to dress for the weather, and read answers to some of our frequently asked questions on our pre-visit page .

Ben's Biz: Weird memories from ballpark road trips

This is an excerpt from the latest edition of the Ben's Biz Beat Newsletter, bringing Minor League Baseball business and culture news to your inbox each and every Thursday. Check out the full newsletter HERE .
Last month, a newsletter reader named Karen emailed the following question: “What is the most bizarre thing you have experienced at a Minor League game?”
Great question, Karen. Thank you. Over 13 seasons of travel, encompassing over 300 visits to 186 Minor League ballparks, I have seen (and been a participant in) a lot of bizarre happenings. So many that I couldn’t possibly pick just one moment to stand out above the rest.
What follows is a brief compendium of strange things I’ve seen at the ballpark, presented in chronological order. There is so much more where this came from -- the below examples are no more recent than 2011 -- and I hope and expect that there will be more to come. My next ballpark road trip kicks off on May 2.
Postgame Laaser Light Show (Altoona Curve; Aug. 2, 2007) The man in the above photo, taken during a rainy evening at Richmond’s The Diamond in 2015, is former Minor League Baseball (and Virginia Tech) broadcaster Jon Laaser. I had first crossed paths with Laaser eight years previously, when I visited Altoona to witness the Curve’s annual Awful Night promotion (my first ballpark road trip ever). The intentionally execrable evening culminated in what was advertised to fans over the PA as a “Postgame Laaser Light Show.” But note the spelling -- this show was simply Curve broadcaster Laaser, dressed in a body suit, dancing on the field while twirling glow sticks. I do not have any photos from this evening, and the video that was embedded within my MiLB.com recap has long since disintegrated into digital dust. But, believe me, it happened.
Postgame Sword Swallower (Huntsville Stars; May 15, 2009) When the 2009 season began, I was still employed on a part-time basis and not yet able to realize my ballpark road trip goals. I was itching to get out there, though, and recruited two friends of mine to travel to Alabama so that we could participate in the Huntsville Stars’ World Record attempt in the category of “Longest Wiffle Ball Game of All Time.” The game was scheduled to begin following the conclusion of a Friday game and then last until 6 p.m. Sunday, but rain put the kibosh on all that.
However! Stars general manager Buck Rogers had booked sword swallower Dan Meyers for the occasion, and he performed on the field following the rainout to a small crowd of front office staffers and hangers-on. Standing on the outfield grass and watching a Minor League GM pull a sword out of a man’s mouth with a bullwhip was maybe the most surreal thing I ever witnessed at a ballpark. I didn’t dream it, either. The videos are still on YouTube.

Mascot Camp “Performance” (Harrisburg Senators; July 17, 2010) 2010 was my first season as a full-time Minor League Baseball writer, and I was eager to expand my horizons. To that end, I attended a three-day mascot camp in Annville, Pa., that culminated in a performance at a Harrisburg Senators game. I transformed into a hirsute fellow who, for reasons that I cannot fully recall, was named Giorgio the Bloggerman. The whole thing was a blur, the camp run a bit haphazardly, and I remember being at the ballpark with no real idea of what I was supposed to be doing. One of our bits involved us on the field with that night’s special guest, legendary wrestler Sgt. Slaughter.
After what seemed to be an interminable amount of time sweating it out while standing in a tunnel and being glared at intimidatingly by Sgt. Slaughter, our moment in the spotlight arrived. It was mascot basic training, and he ordered the ramshackle coterie of mascots before him to do pushups. I was just trying to keep my head on straight, literally.
Tooth Celebrity (Inland Empire 66ers; May 18, 2011) My first trip to see the San Bernardino-based Inland Empire 66ers was imbued with an anarchic spirit from the jump. My time at the ballpark began at a 66ers team meeting held outside the ballpark, in which bats and other equipment were burned in a trash can as a means to exorcise offensive demons. From there it was a whirlwind, culminating with my appearance in an on-field “Molar Race” sponsored by a local dentist. I won that race, but what I remember most is signing autographs for kids on the berm before the race began. I didn’t know if I -- a racing molar -- had a name, so I just scrawled “Tooth” on a variety of hats, baseballs and t-shirts. I hope those kids held on to those items, because they’re surely worth some serious money these days.
Gorilla Goes Ape (Lake Elsinore Storm; May 19, 2011) The anarchic California League vibes stayed with me as I traveled from San Bernardino to Lake Elsinore, home of the Storm. At the time the team had a menagerie of bizarre ballpark characters, highlighted by the easily angered Grounds Crew Gorilla. As I wrote in my Ben’s Biz Blog post :
[T]he Gorilla was upstaged in a dance contest by a younger, more nimble female gorilla. This enraged him, so he darted into the visiting dugout and then up the hilly berm area. At the top of the hill he picked up a portion of the fence separating the berm from the concourse and threw it with all his might.
The picture I took in the aftermath of this rage-fueled rampage is lousy -- a Sony Webbie was my documentation tool at the time -- but nonetheless it illustrates what occurred. This was Minor League Baseball at its most deeply strange, and therefore Minor League Baseball at its best.
Geez, I could go on and on. I should write a book. Publishers, please email me six-figure advance offers here: [email protected] . Anyone else: Email me and ask me a question, whatever’s on your mind. It may lead to a newsletter feature such as this!

Joel Embiid Receives Flagrant Foul After Dangerous Play on Knicks' Mitchell Robinson
The 76ers star got hit with a Flagrant 1 after grabbing Mitchell Robinson's leg.
- Author: Liam McKeone
While much of the sports world was focused on the 2024 NFL draft, the Philadelphia 76ers tipped off their Game 3 matchup against the New York Knicks. It's been a very physical series to this point and it didn't take long for things to escalate on Thursday night, as 76ers superstar Joel Embiid received a flagrant foul in the first quarter.
Embiid went up to block a Knicks shot in the paint and ended up on his back. OG Anunoby came down with the rebound and dished it to center Mitchell Robinson. Robinson went up for the easy layup but Embiid decided to grab Robinson's legs and yank them out from under him. It was a really dangerous sequence and deserving of a flagrant foul.
Joel Embiid received a Flagrant 1 after this foul on Mitchell Robinson 😳 pic.twitter.com/2ygeQh8gMG — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) April 26, 2024
This came merely minutes after officials were forced to review an Embiid play for a possible hostile act after the big man appeared to knee Isaiah Hartenstein below the belt.
Isaiah Hartenstein was in pain after this offensive foul by Joel Embiid (via @KnicksClipss ) pic.twitter.com/pziNshaBJd — Knicks Videos (@sny_knicks) April 26, 2024
Playoff basketball is significantly more physical than any regular season play but it's hard to understand what Embiid's intentions were here. Undercutting an NBA player in the air is always a no-no and you never see a player laying on the ground reach up and grab someone else's leg. Everyone is fortunate disaster was avoided.
Despite Robinson missing both flagrant free throws, the Knicks led the 76ers, 29-27, after the first quarter.
