What We Do on our Turtle Tour

Activities: Many of these marine enclaves are considered to be key environments where four species of sea turtles can be found—the Green Sea Turtle, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Olive Ridley — along with other local wildlife.

Duration: 3-4 hours

Meeting Point: We pick you up.

Choose between one of the two beaches below:

  • Camaronal Refuge
  • Ostional National Park

Just one hour south of Samara Beach you can find Camaronal Beach where every night between June and December, the Olive Ridley sea turtles come to nest in small but consistent numbers (not more than 20).

We stay roughly an hour, giving us plenty of time to observe them nesting and see them returning into the sea.

Start time:  5 pm, but this time may be affected by the tides.

Duration: 3 hours

$50 /person

At Ostional Beach, turtles are seen only 4 -6 days each month from June to December, following a crescent lunar cycle, during which time sightings are registered during the day and night.

Daytime sightings have the distinct advantage of sunlight giving tourists the ability to take wonderful photos, which is not allowed during the dark.

Playa Ostional is almost two hours from Playa Samara. The trip includes a couple of river crossings.

Start time: early in the morning or in the afternoon

Duration: 4-5 hours

Minimum 4 persons

$70 /person

“ Alfredo is the best! We went and saw the “Arribadas” which is when the sea turtles arrive to dig their nests and lay their eggs. What a life-changing experience! Thousands of turtles all over the beach I was especially impressed by Alfredo’s knowledge of the turtles and many other marine animals, not to mention his great conversation, friendly demeanor, and top level professionalism. We liked him so much we booked a fishing trip with him for tomorrow! I highly recommend Samara Sea Tours! “

Joshua J., October 2023

  • Things to do

Visit a beach near Sámara for the chance to observe sea turtles in their natural environment. While you’re here you can see three different species of sea turtles: leatherback, Olive Ridley, and hawksbill.

Camaronal is an undeveloped beach, and local environmentalist groups are always working to make sure it remains a safe environment for the sea turtles. Participants on the tour must wear dark clothing and refrain from using cameras to avoid disturbing the turtles.

During the tour you’ll have the chance to see one of the sea turtles laying their eggs. Visitors will learn about the life cycle of sea turtles — only 1 in 5,000 sea turtles makes it to adulthood, which is part of why protecting their nesting environment is so essential to their survival.

Turtle Observation in Camaronal Costa Rica

Fascinating day trip from Playa Samara to see the turtles in the evening. Turtles are seen about 80% of the time on this tour all year around. The turtles do not arrive in masses like in Ostinal but nor are you limited to seeing them at certain times of year and certain times of the month, like in Ostinal.

There are 7 species of sea turtles in the world and in Playa Camaronal three of these species come to nest! Although it is more common to see the Leatherbacks than the others. All three have been declared endangered.

  • AzorRocks 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best way to plan a vacation. Brenda and Bee were the most helpful people while planning our family vacation. We were a party of 11 with multiple families involved and I could not have coordinated everything without them. I usually plan the entire family vacation by myself but I am so happy to have found Brenda and Bee. They made everything so effortless. They helped arrange our transportation along with several activities. This was a very important trip as our daughter was also getting engaged and we wanted the surprise to go perfectly. The trip was amazing. The engagement was beautiful. And I did not have to stress about anything because Brenda and Bee kept everything on point. They would even send confirmation emails to me before each event so that I did not have to worry about "confirming" activities the day before. They coordinated pick ups of our large group and were even available for general questions such as sight-seeing questions and restaurant recommendations. My father left a hat on a fishing boat and they had the hat brought to us to a restaurant we had reservations at where the proposal took place so that we did not have to alter plans to pick it up. Using them to help with our family vacation was the best decision we made and I cannot recommend them enough. Truly amazing people who want you to have the best time possible in a beautiful country. Camaronal Wildlife Refuge

Nestled in the pristine wilderness of northwest Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge emerged in 1994 as a haven for the remarkable sea turtles that grace its shores with their presence during nesting season, which unfolds from June to January. Hidden away from the well-trodden paths, this sanctuary finds its closest companions in the charming towns of Carrillo and Samara , drawing travelers seeking both the tranquility of secluded beaches and the awe-inspiring spectacle of nesting sea turtles.

The Camaronal Wildlife Refuge offers a unique opportunity to get closer to nature. Home to four sea turtle species, this refuge features warmer temperatures and a fascinating look into the life of sea turtles.

Free Vacation Planning

Camaronal wildlife refuge: where turtles paint the sands with life.

Spanning 234 hectares or 578 acres, Camaronal Refuge gracefully spans from sea level to 5 meters (0 to 16 feet) in elevation, offering an enchanting blend of beach and river habitats. While it may lack traditional hiking trails, the refuge invites visitors to embark on soul-soothing beach walks. As the sun dips below the horizon, a guide becomes an essential companion, illuminating the nocturnal world of the refuge. However, it's the turtles that truly steal the limelight in this sanctuary. Most nights, between May and November , the sands come alive with the gentle arrival of nesting turtles. Their choice of nesting grounds includes the Olive Ridley, Leatherback, Hawksbill, and Pacific Green Turtles, each leaving behind a precious legacy in the form of eggs carefully laid in the sand. Beyond the nesting season, the turtles continue their timeless ritual, albeit less predictably. To safeguard these treasures, a dedicated hatchery stands watch, where volunteers nurture the eggs during their incubation period, ensuring their safe journey into the world.

How to get there

From San Jose, take Rt. 27 west all the way to the end where it meets Rt. 1.  Take Rt. 1 northwest until you reach Limonal.  Turn left on Rt. 18 west and follow all the way to Rt. 21.  Turn right on Rt. 21 and follow until you reach Nicoya.  Turn left on Rt. 150 south and follow to Samara.  Turn left on Rt. 160 and then follow it through Carrillo and then turn right at the fork to Playa Camaronal.  This route has steep, muddy inclines and requires crossing a river.  In the rain season, you will have to take the log route, bypassing the previously mentioned turn to Camaronal as the river will be too high.  To do so, continue to Estrada Ravago and then turn right, following signs to Punta Islita, which is near the refuge.

Weather and packing list

Camaronal is located in a transitional area between the rainforest and tropical dry forest.  Day time temps are usually in the upper 80s to lower 90s and nighttime temperatures are usually in the mid-70s.  The refuge receives an average of 2,000 mm or 79 inches of rain annually.  The driest months are December through August .

Visitors should pack a bathing suit, towel, shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block, and insect repellent.

Fun Fact: Camaronal Wildlife Refuge has a turtle release program that releases baby turtles most nights.

Just south of Playa Carrillo is Punta Islita, home to the Macaw Recovery Network (previously The Ara Project), a conservation organization dedicated to the survival of Costa Rica’s native macaws. Previously extinct in this area of Guanacaste, the Scarlet Macaw is now back!

The site in Punta Islita is home to the organization’s Macaw Refuge and Breeding Center, where rescued or injured birds from both species that can not be released are kept for breeding purposes. Their young are then released into the wild.

Camaronal Wildlife Refuge

Quick facts.

  • Location : 7 miles south of Samara
  • Area : 600 land acres & 39,537 marine acres
  • Hours : 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily
  • Telephone : 2659-8190 or 2659-8193
  • Entrance Fee : Free

Located along Costa Rica's North Pacific shores, Playa Camaronal is situated seven miles south of Playa Samara, in the province of Guanacaste. Wildlife congregates near the brackish estuary, where the Ora River empties into the sea. The refuge offers fishing and surfing; however, it is most famous for the pivotal role it plays in the preservation of the sea turtle.

Of the seven species that exist in the world, four of them frequent Camaronal’s shores: the Olive Ridley, the Atlantic leatherback, the hawksbill, and the black sea turtle. In Spanish, they are known as the lora, baula, carey, and negra – and all are endangered.

Leatherback turtles nest here year-round, although with less frequency from December to April. On a given night, visitors can usually spot between one and five female turtles laying eggs. From May to November, scientists may find up to 120 new nests nightly, with an average of 30 per night. Nesting sea turtles at Camaronal arrive one by one – unlike the arribadas of northern Playa Ostional and Nancite, where thousands of turtles storm the shore en masse.

Scientists, students, researchers and volunteers work diligently at Camaronal’s turtle hatchery, initiated by Costa Rica’s marine turtle restoration program (PRETOMA). PRETOMA is a non-profit organization that aims to protect sea life and to promote sustainable fisheries. The project’s prime objective at Camaronal is to collect warm eggs from recently dug turtle nests, and then re-bury them in a fenced-in area safe from predators. Once babies begin to hatch, workers tag and carry them outside one by one – and watch as the creatures toddle into the sea. Information gathered from earmarked turtles is vital to understanding and predicting these reptiles’ behavior, and to better protecting the species as a whole.

The most probable time to view these graceful giants corresponds with Costa Rica’s rainy season, which runs from May through November. Babies can hatch 24 hours per day, but generally do so early in the morning or after the sun sets. Adults only lay eggs at night – tour guides, which can be hired for about $40 in Samara or Carrillo, are mandatory after park hours. Heavy downpours can lead to impassable roads coming from any direction. Be sure to ask locals for advice on the best way to travel to Camaronal during rainier months of the year. Read more about turtle tours in Costa Rica.

Activities:

Bird and wildlife observation is phenomenal at Camaronal Wildlife Refuge. Trogons, hawks, cranes, hummingbirds, frigate birds, white-fronted parakeets, roseate spoonbills, tiger herons, boat billed herons, green kingfishers, social flycatchers, and mangrove warblers are just a few of the birds that can be spotted. Other animals that like to linger about the Ora River Estuary include crabs, iguanas, monkeys, coatimundi and armadillos.

Fishing is quite popular at Playa Camaronal, and anglers often surf cast from the shore. Common catches include sea bass, yellowtail and roosterfish.

The consistent waves at Playa Camaronal are perfect for seasoned surfers. Waves have been known to grow so big that they become tubular – and far too enormous for casual swimmers to enjoy. The largest wave recorded at Camaronal reached upwards of 20 feet.

Facilities:

There is a small information center with a restaurant and parking at the main entrance. The center sells drinks and a few food items and has bathrooms equipped with showers. Five spaces for camping are also available. Before and after park hours, a certified guide must accompany visitors to the refuge. Local experts in wildlife observation can be hired from both Samara and Carrillo for this purpose.

Getting There:

There is no public transportation to Camaronal. The only option is to take a bus from San Jose to Hojancha, or to Nicoya and then on to Samara and Carrillo. From there, a taxi or rented vehicle can be acquired.

By Car: From Nicoya, drive 23 miles west to Playa Samara. Take a left to Carrillo, and on toward Estrada. At the fork in the road just before Estrada, take a right. Follow the path until a sign for Islita appears on the right. Turn here, and take a left where the road ends. The entrance to Camaronal is well marked. The sign will be on the right in less than a mile. During the rainy season, this route may not be possible. It is best to hire a local guide to arrange transportation from Samara or Carrillo, particularly at night when visibility is low.

Camaronal Turtle Tour

  • Get up-close to female sea turtles laying eggs
  • Learn about turtle conservation efforts
  • Visit Playa Camaronal at night
  • Hours : 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. (depending on tide)
  • Price : $49 per person
  • Note : Transportation to and from wildlife refuge, snacks and water included

Witness a miraculous natural wonder, sea turtles laying their eggs just inches away from you in the soft volcanic-rock sands of the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge.

Every evening – especially during their peak nesting season (May-Nov.) – between 7:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., hundreds of female olive ridley, leatherback, black Pacific and hawksbill turtles come ashore in a synchronized manner for 45 to 60 minutes to lay eggs in the sands of the Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge.

Just after dusk, shuttle to the Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge information center to start your guided tour. Walk down the beach with a local guide exploring the shoreline with a red flashlight to spot turtles crawling 50 feet away from the Pacific Ocean. Let a mama turtle shimmy up the beach probing for a place to make her nest. Watch while she kicks away sand to dig a 15-inch-deep, light bulb-shaped hole. Approach slowly from behind as she slips into a 10 to 15 minute trance and your guide shines the red flashlight onto her mucus-coated eggs flowing in a punctuated stream.

Stick around as she covers the hole and tampers the silky sands with her belly to camouflage the nest before she wades into the ocean, sure to return to Playa Camaronal in about 20 days with her next 100 eggs.

Scan the beach for any more turtle sightings and help Camaronal's volunteers race against raccoons and poachers to collect, count and relocate the newly laid eggs to a hatchery where they'll incubate safely over the next seven weeks.  Baby turtles will be released as they hatch; and volunteers will oversee their first journey across the sand into the ocean.

Walk back to the information center's picnic tables for a snack of cookies and water before returning to your hotel.

  • Departure time : Hotel pickup is between 20 and 50 minutes before tour start time depending on hotel location.
