This is the most famous sight on Capri, where visitors from around the world form long queues to get a peek inside for just a few magical moments: we're talking about the Blue Grotto , of course. This natural cavern is 25 meters wide and 60 meters long, with a tiny entrance less than a meter high. To enter, visitors lay back in wooden rowboats and glide through the low cave mouth. Once inside, the boats bob in the dark, suspended on the surface of water so blue that it seems dream-like .

Floating in the Grotta Azzurra is an experience that should be on any traveller's bucket list.

Visiting the Blue Grotto Capri - Practical Tips

Entrance to the Blue Grotto is possible only by boarding small rowboats which hold a maximum of four passengers at a time. The entrance ticket must be purchased at the floating ticket office at the cave entrance. After purchasing your ticket, your skipper will ask that you lay back along the bottom of the boat to enable the group to pass through the tiny mouth of the cave. Once inside, your skipper will row you around the cavern, singing traditional Neapolitan folk songs which echo off the rock walls and create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Tour to Capri from Sorrento Tour to Capri from Positano and the Amalfi Coast

There are a number of ways to reach the Blue Grotto entrance:

By tour boat : from Marina Grande, the Motoscafisti , Laser Capri , and Capri Cruise boat charter companies depart with organized group tours of the island of Capri and stops at the Blue Grotto. Tickets cost around EUR 21 (tickets to enter the Blue Grotto must be purchased separately). These tours take about 2 hours.

More information about tours of the island by sea.

The Motoscafisti charter also offers round trip transport to the Blue Grotto from the port. Tickets for this service are EUR 21 (in addition to tickets to enter the Blue Grotto) and the trip lasts about an hour.

Book the transfer to the Blue Grotto

By rental boat : from Marina Grande, visitors can hire a gozzo (the traditional boat of Capri) with skipper for a tour of the island by sea and a stop at the Blue Grotto. Private boats can usually transport up to seven passengers, costs start from around EUR 200 for two hours.

Book a private boat with skipper

By private boat : if you are visiting Capri on your private boat, you can anchor near the grotto (there are a number of buoys near the entrance) and call for a boat to transfer you to the grotto entrance.

By land : the cave entrance can be reached by land from Anacapri: Take Via Pagliaro from the center of town, then Via Grotta Azzurra. At the end of the road, follow the stairs down to the grotto, where you can board the rowboats. The walk is about 3.5 km (40 minutes downhill) from Anacapri, or there is a bus line which leaves from Piazza della Pace in Anacapri and reaches the cave in 15 minutes.

How long is the cave visit?

Rowboats stay inside the Blue Grotto for about five minutes. That said, the line to enter the cave is often quite long... in high season, wait times can reach two hours .

Can visitors swim in the Blue Grotto Capri?

No, visitors can neither enter the cave by swimming nor disembark from their rowboat to swim inside the cave. However, after the cave closes to the public at 5:30 p.m. (when the rowboats and ticket office close), many swimmers enter the cave by sea. This is both illegal and dangerous, as the cave mouth is low and narrow and in case of high waves it is easy to get thrown against the rocks.

When is the best time of day to visit the Blue Grotto?

The glowing effect of the water inside the Blue Grotto is due to the sunlight which enters through a second, underwater cave mouth beneath that on the surface. For this reason, the most intense color comes with the most intense sunlight during the midday hours of noon to 2:00 p.m. . The difference between the first morning light and the late afternoon light is negligible, though there is often a longer line in the afternoon. It is best to avoid visiting the grotto on overcast days, when there internal glow is much less dramatic.

How much does it cost to visit the Blue Grotto?

The EUR 18 ticket includes the entrance fee and the cost of the rowboat transport (EUR 11). Children entrance under 6 years old: free. EU citizens under 18 pay just for the rowboat transport. For EU citizens between 18 and 25 years of age, there is a discount of 50% on the entrance fee, for a total of EUR 15. The rowboat skippers are often tipped. The ticket price is in addition to the cost of a boat transfer to the cave entrance, which is about EUR 21 for a full island tour by sea or for a round trip ticket just to the grotto.

Is the Blue Grotto ever closed due to weather?

In case of rain or rough seas, it is not possible to enter the Blue Grotto. It often happens that the cave can close and reopen in the same day, according to the weather, or that the weather seems calm but the grotto is closed due to adverse winds. To find out if the grotto is closed at any given time, call the Motoscafisti di Capri pier by dialing 081 8375646 after 9 am. Unfortunately, it's not possible to foresee closures due to weather, though the grotto is usually kept closed when the weather forecasts high wind and waves.

Is the grotto closed in winter?

The Blue Grotto is open all year round, weather permitting, though it is often closed from November to March. If visiting in winter, it's best to check first either at the ticket offices of Laser Capri (Molo 21) and Motoscafisti di Capri (Molo 0) in Marina Grande, or by calling 081 8375646 after 9 am. If the ticket offices are closed, the grotto is closed, as well.

The history of the Blue Grotto

This sea cave was known during the time of ancient Rome, when it is thought that the Blue Grotto was one of Emperor Tiberius ' favorite nymphaea, or temples dedicated to sea nymphs. Inside the cavern, a number of statues have been found dating from that period. For many centuries, the Blue Grotto (also known in the past as the Grotta di Gradola) was abandoned, feared by the local sailors because of legends of spirits and demons which inhabited the cave. This changed dramatically on April 18, 1826 when the cave was "rediscovered" by the German writer August Kopisch and painter Ernst Fries , his friend and travel companion, who were taken to the cave by Angelo Ferraro, local fisherman, and notary Giuseppe Pagano.

How to Reach the Blue Grotto By boat : 10 minutes from Marina Grande or as a stop during a tour of the island. By bus : from Anacapri, 50 meters from Piazza Vittoria. On foot : follow Viale T. de Tommaso, Via Pagliaro and Via Grotta Azzurra (3.5 km).

Being Feb there was only one boat trip around the island and it was offered at a great price while on the ferry. It was the best way to see the island in one day. The ferry ticket sales were a bit slow but we made the departure with a few minutes to spare each way. If not in the slow season then getting tickets in advance would be better. We really enjoyed the island without the crowds that high season brings. We made all our plans dependent upon the weather and this can be done only in the slow season. Highly recommend doing a February trip to avoid heat and crowds. Read more Written March 5, 2024

Kind of hectic to find the meeting point at 10:30, good thing we took the 9:10 ferry from Naples instead of 9:35. Would have been better to NOT get our ferry tickets online as we were not allowed to change /cancel. We bought earlier ferry tickets from someone whose family was sick and stayed on the ship. *Another passenger said NLG would not honor scan code if it wasn’t printed out. Cruise guest services printed for us. Also Must arrive 20 minutes before ticket/ departure time to get boarding passes and queue up. Read more Written June 27, 2022

The booking and pre-payment went smoothly, the pre-arranged meeting point was easy to find. Fabrizio does a great job of shepherding the group from the harbour to the boat, provides anecdotes and explanations and is very approachable for questions. After the amazing boat trip the connection to Anacapri follows and then on to Capri. Fortunately Fabrizio's job to organise. Seeing the queues at the bus stops I'm glad this was one problem I didn't have to worry about. Free time in Anacapri to browse the shops, take the chairlift (optional, we did and the views were great), or just take a slow lunch followed by a walk through Capri to the Gardens of Augustus. Summary - stress free, hassle free and enjoyable day out with a pleasant and friendly guide who makes you immediately feel at home visiting the island of Capri. Highly recommended. First of all, Fabrizio is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and personable. He knows everything about the island and knows everyone there. With Fabrizio, we took a private boat tour to the sides of the island where we jumped into the pristine waters around Capri. Fabrizio gave us a comprehensive tour both by land and by sea. He is well known in restaurants and stores, so we were able to skip lines and make the most of our day. He speaks perfect English and kept my teenage children engaged and entertained. The Blue Grotto

Visit the most famous grotto in the world

The Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto Capri, or Grotta Azzurra, is a natural wonder that leaves visitors in awe. This mesmerizing sea cave on the island of Capri, Italy, is known for its breathtaking azure waters and enchanting atmosphere. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore its history, unique features, and how to make the most of your visit to this magical destination.

1. The History of the Blue Grotto Capri

The Blue Grotto Capri has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It is believed that the cave was discovered by the Romans and used as a private swimming hole for Emperor Tiberius. Throughout the centuries, the grotto has captured the imaginations of poets, artists, and travelers alike.

It wasn't until the 19th century, however, that the Blue Grotto gained widespread fame. In 1826, German painter August Kopisch and his friend, artist Ernst Fries, visited the cave and were captivated by its beauty. Their accounts and paintings of the grotto spread throughout Europe, attracting a steady stream of visitors and solidifying its status as a must-see destination.

2. The Unique Features of the Blue Grotto Capri

The Blue Grotto is a natural sea cave, measuring approximately 60 meters long and 25 meters wide. The cave's entrance is a narrow opening, only two meters wide and about one meter high. This small entrance adds to the mystique of the grotto, as visitors must board small rowboats and lie down to pass through the portal.

Inside the cave, the magic truly begins. The sunlight reflecting off the cave walls and the water's surface creates an ethereal azure blue light that illuminates the cavern. The stunning blue hue and the soothing echo of gentle waves and ancient Neapolitan songs make visitors feel as if they are suspended in the heavens.

3. How to Get to the Blue Grotto Capri

There are two primary ways to reach the Blue Grotto Capri: by bus from Anacapri or by boat from Marina Grande.

From Anacapri, you can take a bus to the Blue Grotto. The journey takes about 15 minutes, and buses run frequently throughout the day. Once you arrive at the bus stop near the grotto, it's a short walk to the entrance.

3.2 By Boat

If you prefer a more scenic route, you can take a boat tour from Marina Grande. These tours typically include a trip around the island, with a stop at the Blue Grotto. Keep in mind that boat tours are subject to weather and sea conditions, so they may not be available every day.

4. Exploring the Blue Grotto: What to Expect

Upon arriving at the Blue Grotto, visitors must transfer from their bus or boat to a small rowboat operated by a skilled skipper. These rowboats can accommodate up to four passengers, who must lie down to fit through the cave's narrow entrance.

As the skipper navigates the rowboat through the opening using a metal chain attached to the cave walls, you will pass from complete darkness into the sparkling cavern. The dazzling blue light and serene atmosphere make for an unforgettable experience.

5. Blue Grotto Capri Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

The Blue Grotto is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. In case of rough seas or high winds, the cave may be closed to visitors for safety reasons. Additionally, the grotto is closed on December 25th and January 1st.

The entrance fee for the Blue Grotto is EUR 18 per person. Since the Blue Grotto is considered a cultural site, the entrance fee is comparable to that of a museum.

Please note that opening times and prices may change, so it's a good idea to check the latest information at info points in Marina Grande or the Piazzetta before your visit. More info and FAQ Blue Grotto boat tours

6. Best Time to Visit the Blue Grotto Capri

The best time to visit the Blue Grotto Capri is during the morning hours, when the sunlight creates the most vivid blue hue inside the cave. Additionally, visiting early in the day helps you avoid the crowds and potential long wait times that can occur during peak season.

It's also essential to consider the weather and sea conditions when planning your visit. The Blue Grotto may be closed due to rough seas or high winds, so it's best to have a flexible schedule and be prepared for possible closures.

7. Safety Tips and Precautions for Visiting the Blue Grotto

While the Blue Grotto is a must-see destination, it's crucial to prioritize safety during your visit. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

Be aware of the weather and sea conditions. The cave may be closed due to unfavorable conditions, so it's essential to stay informed and adjust your plans accordingly.

Follow the instructions of your skipper. They are experienced professionals who will guide you safely through the cave's entrance and ensure a smooth journey.

Be prepared to lie down in the rowboat. The cave's narrow entrance requires visitors to lie flat to avoid hitting the rocks.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear. It's a good idea to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can get wet, as water may splash into the boat during the journey.

8. Other Attractions Near the Blue Grotto Capri

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!
