A new cruise ship is in the works. What that means for vacation travelers and Miami

The cruise industry, which employs thousands of people in South Florida and brings millions of tourists to the region, has a new ship in the works.

Doral-based Carnival Corp. has ordered a new Excel-class ship, the 10th in that class in the company’s global fleet, the company said on Tuesday. Carnival signed an agreement with German shipbuilder Meyer Werft to have the 180,000-ton vessel ready for passengers by spring 2027. Excel is Carnival’s largest and newest category of cruise ship.

The development is yet another sign that the cruise industry is back from COVID.

What Carnival executive says

“Coming out of the pandemic, demand is great,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said Tuesday at an Axios event at The Hanger in Coconut Grove. “You see a lot more capacity moving into particularly the U.S. market.”

That has been evident at Florida’s major seaports: PortMiami, Port Canaveral and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, which have built new terminals or welcomed new cruise companies.

During the 12-month fiscal year 2023 —which for the cruise industry began Oct. 1, 2022, and ended Sept. 30, 2023 — PortMiami, Florida’s largest port, set a record for annual passengers. During that time, 7.3 million passengers traveled in and out, nearly twice the four million passengers the prior fiscal year.

Travel through PortMiami exceeded by 7% its previous record of 6.8 million passengers set in fiscal year 2019, before the pandemic disrupted the popular vacation industry.

Carnival’s new ship

Carnival’s new ship, its first new order in five years, can carry over 6,400 guests and will be powered on a liquefied natural gas technology platform.

It will be the fourth Excel-class ship in the company’s namesake Carnival Cruise Line brand and a sister to Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee.

The company, which carries 13 million passengers per year, said that Excel-class ships have proven popular with passengers and will allow it to offer more cruises.

This would be the company’s second new ship to be completed between now and 2027. The other is expected to be delivered in 2025.

Starting in 2027, the company sees itself adding one or two ships a year.

The Miami-Dade company is also seeking to improve its financial performance, including reducing its approximately $36 billion in debt, Duffy said.

“We are very committed to focusing on the balance sheet,” the executive said in a 16-minute Q&A with Dan Primack, a business editor at Axios.

Carnival currently has 93 ships and 120,000 employees.

Duffy, who as a teenager sought to work as a flight attendant but was rejected by Pan American Airways for being too short, got her start in the travel industry as a receptionist.

At her Coconut Grove appearance, she also addressed several other issues related to the company:

▪ On whether the company felt pressure to outdo competitor Royal Caribbean’s recently launched Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship: “Years ago, Carnival Cruise Line delivered and built the biggest ship — Carnival Destiny. I think at this point, size does not really matter so much.”

▪ On the case of two Americans who last week alleged they were attacked and raped while onshore in the Bahamas during a Carnival cruise: “That specific incident is under investigation. And until that’s concluded we are advising our guests not to go to that beach or resort. ... We met with Bahamian government officials on Friday and we are working closely with them.”

She did not address an incident involving a Carnival ship hitting a pier last week in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The chartered rock and roll cruise was forced to abandon the first pier it docked at due to high winds after many passengers were already on shore.

Passengers furious about how Carnival cruise ship fire was handled

carnival cruises news

FLORIDA — Midway through a five-day cruise in March, the tail of the Carnival Freedom cruise ship caught fire.

Passengers chronicled the drama that played out on board in hundreds of social media posts. They showed flames shooting from the tail, water leaking from the 5th-floor interior, and shuttered areas like pools, sports venues, and restaurants.

For 9-year-old Katherine Drey and her family, it marked the beginning of the end of what had been a great getaway.

“We couldn't swim, we couldn't eat, we couldn't do water slides, we couldn't go to the sports area,” Katherine recalled.

Carnival cruise ship fire

Katherine's mom, Kelly Booth, said many of the venues on the back half of the ship, including the pool and restaurants, shut down for the day. Some closed for the remainder of the cruise. The main dining room opened that same night, but several on board described waiting in line for up to four hours for dinner.

Passenger Gemma Phillips is one of several who told ABC Action News that Carnival brushed them off when her family asked for cruise credit or some sort of compensation for the trip’s interruption.

“The second that happened, like, vacation was no longer a vacation,” she said.

Phillips created a Facebook page for Carnival Freedom passengers. It has more than 280 members from the nearly 3,000 that were on board the full-capacity ship.

Many of the people posting in the group are outraged that Carnival isn't offering a partial cruise credit or anything else to make up for the stress and inconvenience.

A Carnival spokesperson said in a statement:

Any venues that were temporarily closed because of lightning in the area, or from the brief cleanup after the fire was extinguished, were reopened by the late afternoon/early evening.

Veteran travel agent Tammy Levent, owner of Elite Travel, said there is no regulatory agency to advocate on passengers’ behalf when things go south on board. She recommended cruisers purchase travel interruption insurance, which could apply in cases where part of a trip is interrupted.

Gemma Phillips said this was her tenth cruise on Carnival and likely her last.

“I don't want to break up with Carnival," she said. "But I feel I have no choice by the way they are handling this.”

And Kelly Booth, a three-time Carnival cruiser, said she's already canceled a future Carnival trip and booked with one of their competitors.

“The way Carnival has handled this and the way Carnival has treated the guests that were on board has ruined what I think of them as a company,” she said.

How Barclays and Carnival Cruise revived a waterlogged card program

Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship docked at Port Canaveral in Florida

Though Barclays U.S. consumer bank and Carnival Cruise Line have been card-issuing partners for two decades, they realized that after the pandemic, their process for enrolling new consumers wasn't exactly ship-shape.

digital wallets .

"People had to fill out an application using paper or an app, and it was error-prone," said Sid Krishna, Carnival's vice president of loyalty, who was charged with rejuvenating the program after joining the firm in 2022 following several years managing loyalty and co-branded card programs at American Airlines, Spirit Airlines and other travel firms.

Barclays, in turn, had developed a frictionless instant card-provisioning process initially designed for airlines. Last year, the bank honed the process so it could work in any environment that has WiFi, including Carnival's far-flung ocean routes around the world, according to Doug Villone, who Barclays hired last year as head of U.S. cards and partnerships.

At American Banker's recent Payments Forum in Hollywood, Florida, Villone and Krishna discussed the progress made so far and the next steps in Carnival's journey to modernize and accelerate the cruise line's instant card-issuing process.

Carnival is facing growing competition in the cruise industry, where many operators are adding new ships to accommodate a total of 30 million prospective global passengers by the end of this year, according to Cruise Market Watch. Miami-based Carnival's key goal with the upgrade was to give interested passengers a way to immediately make purchases with a new Carnival FunPoints Mastercard whether they were on or off the ship, Krishna said.

"Cruise lines are far more complicated than other travel modes like airlines, where the customer uses a card to make a single purchase of a ticket with maybe a few upgrades. On a cruise line, there are several different merchants from retailers to spa services to shore excursion operators, each with their own payment systems, and an instantly issued credit card needs to work across them all," he said.

Barclays last year switched on the capability for Carnival Cruise passengers to scan a QR code anywhere on the ship and receive approval for a digital Carnival FunPoints credit card within 12 to 15 minutes from anywhere in the world with WiFi, according to Villone. Barclays saw an immediate "bump" in applications from the streamlined approach, he noted, without disclosing figures.

In coming months, Barclays plans to further streamline the process, shaving off minutes by using technology that pre-populates applications and enables customers to apply by providing just a few pieces of information, with the option to review the credit offer before querying credit bureaus, Villone said.

"Credit card pre-screening technology has really improved, and Carnival will be at the forefront of the cruise industry when we complete the final leg of the digital application process this year," he said.

Carnival's parent company, which operates nine different cruise lines including Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, is investing in new ships and curated destinations to compete with rivals such as Royal Caribbean, which is launching the 5,700-passenger Utopia of the Seas in July that touts five pools, three waterslides, 21 dining venues, 23 bars and two casinos.

As the first cruise line with a roller coaster on three of its ships, Carnival has seven new ships in the wings and next year will unveil its first private island exclusively created for Carnival ships, creating an additional need for streamlined on-site credit card issuance, Krishna said.

Celebration Key, Carnival's branded island opening next year in the Bahamas, will host up to 15,000 passengers at once from two or more Carnival ships, including its largest Excel-class ships that each carry more than 6,000 people. Carnival expects the new venue to drive "higher incremental port spending," Joshua Weinstein, Carnival's president and CEO, told analysts last month when announcing the company's first-quarter earnings.

"This will be a private destination with a lot of payment opportunities for passengers temporarily getting off the ships, such as unique Bahamian retailers and jewelers, beach activities and high-end dining," Krishna said.

Bank-of-the-West-Branch

Passengers will also be able to apply for a Carnival credit card using a QR code on Celebration Key "in case they decide they want to finance additional purchases," he said.

Working with Barclays, Carnival also recently added the ability to provision new Carnival credit cards directly into passengers' trip folios through the Carnival Sail & Sign onboard account, the payments-enabled access card customers use to on the ship to obtain any of its services and products. "We wanted to position that virtual card into the Sail & Sign account immediately so we get the full benefit of the card without losing a moment in the transaction process," Krishna said.

Barclaycard, one of the U.S.'s only issuers focused exclusively on co-branded cards, supports about 20 different co-branded card programs reaching about 20 million customers, with a high concentration in the travel industry.

"We're constantly bringing the technology and capabilities we develop in one part of the travel industry to other travel verticals, like how we've brought some of the most sophisticated card experiences developed for airlines to cruise ships," said Vallone, who served for a decade at Barclays before returning last year after a five-year stint in various executive capacities at Goldman Sachs.

Vallone's other mission is helping Carnival fine-tune its existing loyalty program to include more incentives linked to the Carnival FunPoints card, which has no annual fee and enables users to earn two points for every dollar spent at Carnival and one point for all other purchases.

"The credit card will act as an accelerator for Carnival's loyalty program, and while it's not surprising that the biggest users are repeat cruise customers, increasingly we want to target people who are new to cruising," he said.

The top five bank holding companies have combined total consumer loan portfolios of more than $1.95 trillion as of December 31, 2023.

A Carnival cruise that left Baltimore last week will return to a different port and bus passengers home

  • Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday morning after a container ship crashed into it.
  • Carnival Cruise Line  is temporarily relocating the Carnival Legend's homeport from Baltimore to Norfolk, Virginia.
  • The company is providing guests on the ship, returning on Sunday, with a bus back to Baltimore.

Insider Today

On Sunday, travelers on Carnival Cruise Line's Legend ship will return home after a relaxing weeklong vacation in the Caribbean.

But instead of disembarking at the ship's homeport as planned, these cruisers will soon find themselves a four-hour bus ride away in Norfolk, Virginia, as the Port of Baltimore remains closed following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Related stories

Amid the disruption, Carnival said it had moved the Carnival Legend's March 31 disembarkation from Baltimore to Norfolk, Virginia, where it will temporarily remain homeported. The company will provide guests on the ship's Caribbean voyage a free bus back to Baltimore.

The Carnival Legend's next weeklong cruise, embarking the same day it returns, will sail roundtrip from Norfolk, about a four-hour drive from Baltimore. The cruise line said it will update future guests on its plans to return to Maryland.

Carnival's Carnival Pride and Legend, Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Sea, and American Cruise Line's American Glory are all scheduled to sail from the Port of Baltimore in April. The companies did not immediately respond to Business Insider's inquiry about potential itinerary changes.

Experts told Business Insider that the Port of Baltimore's ongoing closure could amount to a daily $15 million loss in economic activity .

While the port is vitally important for certain imports and exports, it represents a relatively small portion of US cruise departures, with smaller ships compared to hubs like Florida. More than 444,000 people embarked on cruises there in 2023, according to state officials.

"Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones," Lupoli said.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

According to a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and circulated on various social media platforms, the affected areas include cities such as Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk.

Residents in Moscow, specifically Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino, are also experiencing power outages, according to other Russian media reports.

Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky.

Meanwhile, a huge fire tore through a large warehouse used by Russia's largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.

The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.
