When the Panama Canal first opened in 1914, some enthusiasts called it one of the "seven wonders of the world" – it was certainly one of the world's most incredible engineering endeavors. For the first time, a ship traveling from New York to San Francisco could save over 7,000 miles by not having to sail around South America. Over a century later, you'll join the special ranks of travelers to traverse the entire length of the canal; crossing aboard a small ship makes the experience an even more memorable one. Taking approximately eight to ten hours, your vessel passes through three locks (the Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatún) as it's raised up and over the isthmus' land surface for a total of 85 ft. before passing between the Atlantic and the Pacific!

We have just returned from an amazing trip to Guatemala and Belize. Every part of the trip was wonderful, from the seamless travel and transfers to the lovely food, the fascinating range of experiences, the knowledgeable guides we connected with along the way, and so much more. Zicasso's travel partner listened carefully to our requests and interests, and every detail was addressed to perfection. We had a wonderful mix of active adventure (volcano hike, kayaking, snorkeling, etc), culinary delights, cultural immersion, and ancient exploration (the ruins of Tikal). What's more, our travel team was communicative, checking in with us a couple of times along the way, and highly responsive (on the one or two occasions we had minor questions, we got almost immediate responses).

Our Zicasso tour operator's suggestions and planning for my first trip to Belize were beyond amazing and outstanding, especially given the short amount of time given for planning and then our requested change of dates about a month before flying. Together, we put together a land package that included the Mayan ruins and cave tubing. The private transportation driver who took us to the mountain was patient in waiting for our delayed flight and knowledgeable in pointing out areas of interest on the two-hour trip. We stayed at a hotel which was quaint, clean, and beautiful. The staff were completely service-driven. Our driver/guide for the Mayan ruins and cave tubing was extremely polite and so knowledgeable. We loved him! Cave tubing is way too much fun and I am looking forward to going back to do it again. Our travel agent added an unexpected and welcomed tour through an iguana conservation project located at the hotel. The small plane/flight to Ambergris Caye was easy and gave great views. The inn right on the beach was cute, quaint, and small. It was in a great location to get away from the business of San Pedro by walking along the beachside or getting into the hustle/bustle of the town by walking one block. We took two snorkel excursions on which both crews were extremely knowledgeable, polite, and very nice. One had us going out on a sailboat, which was a pleasant surprise. We were able to rent a golf cart directly through the hotel, whose staff were kind and provided exceptional customer service, to travel to Secret Beach. One minor thing was being on the second floor of the hotel instead of the ground floor, but we completely understand that we were probably lucky to have even got a room there due to our late changes. We are more than excited about planning a trip to go back next year!

We had such a great experience with Zicasso’s travel agents. They were quick to respond to any questions leading up to our trip. They listened to our ideas of what we wanted to do and see, and took that into full account before sending us the perfectly planned itinerary. Due to some hiccups with our airlines, we were delayed a day, but once I reached out to explain the situation, our agent quickly rearranged our trip and assured us that we would still have a great vacation. And we did!!!! Even after our return, when I needed to reach out to our travel insurance to recoup some of the losses, our travel team quickly sent the appropriate documents to make it easy for me to submit. I will absolutely use and recommend this company to anyone thinking of visiting Belize.

We loved Panama. The hotels and restaurants were fabulous, and the people were gracious, even though most did not speak English. Google's translator was a necessity. Overall, the tour company was not what I have come to expect from traveling with Zicasso. The communication going back and forth in planning the trip was difficult. At one point, they lost track of our payments and had to find the funds. I was under the impression they were based in Panama, which they were not. We never got a call to see how we were doing. Some of the planned trips needed to be changed at the last minute because we didn't get the information on how difficult the trip would be (the trip to the volcano). What was then scheduled for us was not very interesting. I will say our agent did try to accommodate us. He sent fruit to the hotel and tried to stay in touch by email. We loved what he planned for us, like Monkey Island and the Embera village, and our hotel accommodations were lovely! Also, they planned a cooking experience with a charming chef … fun! All our transportation was on time and the drivers very nice. Our guides were adequate, but communicating was often hard.

My wife and I could not be happier about our experience with Zicasso’s travel company. From beginning to end, our tour operator and the staff were courteous, concerned, and helpful. At the outset, they inquired about all of our interests and travel preferences, and were able to put together an itinerary that suited us well, including choosing really nice hotels and good restaurants. Once we arrived in Costa Rica, and for the entire two weeks of our stay, they were in touch with us every step of the way, making sure our trip was going well and as planned. Their drivers were prompt, friendly, and careful on the road. This was important because given the nature of our itinerary, we had several three- to four-hour land transfers by automobile. The travel company also made good choices in the tour companies they picked for us in our four locations: Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, Tortuguero, and Arenal. This was our second trip to Costa Rica (the last one was about 10 years ago) and we may well return. If so, we would undoubtedly ask Zicasso’s tour company to handle our plans.

The trip was perfectly organized. Our Zicasso travel agent was extremely helpful in arranging and coordinating the entire trip. Every transfer was smooth. The arranged trips and guides were at the best level. All the hotels were comfortable, with scenic grounds and great staff. We stayed at three hotels and they were all different from each other, which made it a fun experience. On the occasion we needed to contact the 24/7 operations line, they were very responsive and helpful. A great addition to the trip. How we got here… Our travel agency was founded in 2013, but it’s safe to say the seed was planted a decade earlier. Both Theresa and I share different, but similar, stories of how we arrived and fell in love with Central America. I grew up in Wisconsin before studying Spanish at the University of Minnesota while Theresa is born and raised in Michigan and studied Finance and International Business at Grand Valley State University. In college we both decided to do a semester abroad to immerse ourselves into local culture and commit to learning Spanish, and we happened to choose schools in San Jose, Costa Rica. Living with local host families for four months we immediately fell in love with the local culture, gallo pinto breakfasts, friendly Ticos, and of course being from the Midwest – the warm weather!

That semester soon ended but the travel bug had already bitten us, hard. After graduating I did a year in the corporate world before heading back to Costa Rica full time in 2005 while Theresa graduated and then volunteered in the Peace Corps before returning in 2009. We soon met working at a Costa Rican travel agency and became friends, then after a couple years later we decided that dating a fellow Midwesterner sounded like a good idea – turns out we were right!

Where we’re going…. After traveling much of Central America together we decided to start our own travel agency to be able to offer vacations throughout the entire region. Being avid divers, anglers, yogis, hikers, foodies, and general adventure seekers we set out to be the company that we would love to travel with. There is so much to see and do here and these small countries are so diverse we knew that our guests would love traveling here as much as we do.

With a combined 20 years of experience living in and booking vacations to Central America we’ve seen, done and experienced a lot. We have personally inspected or stayed at every accommodation we represent, we’ve tried every day tour we offer, and we’ve been everywhere (many places too many times to count!). Central America is a destination full of attractions and varying landscapes. The region is incredibly photogenic so travelers will not miss out on photo opportunities. It is full of thriving nature, friendly locals, delectable cuisine and exciting adventures. Central America is a hub for biodiversity, so it is also an ecological treasure to many. Over 20 million people visit Central America per year. And that number does not seem to be slowing down any time soon since the destination is becoming more popular.

Although Central America is a popular travel destination , to some, it has a slightly negative reputation for danger. The perceived danger for tourists has come from film depictions and political unrest. But some countries in Central America are more dangerous than others and there are plenty of safe places to visit. So, travelers should do their own research so they do not miss out on what Central America has to offer. Staying informed is a vital step to ensuring travelers enjoy safe and secure journeys abroad. To aid traveler’s plans to go abroad we have gathered the information they should know about the safest Central American countries.

Safest Countries in Central America 

Generally, the top issue for tourists visiting Central America is theft. This crime happens all over the world but is more prevalent in certain places, so in safer areas there is even less to worry about. The northern Central American countries often experience more violent crime. So it is advisable for travelers to avoid visiting the countries with higher crime rates. Costa Rica 

Costa Rica is commonly known as Central America’s safest country. It has lower crime levels, a more stable economy and a reputation as a peaceful nation. The country also provides a high quality of life to its citizens. Costa Rica does not even have an army and the country is a democracy, so it is a pretty safe destination. It even ranks high in the Global Peace Index . In 2023, it ranked as the 39th country (out of 163 ranked countries) according to its levels of safety and security, extent of domestic or international conflict and degree of militarization. 

Costa Rica’s strong safety record allows travelers to explore the country securely. So there is plenty for travelers to do while visiting. The country is known for its fantastic national parks and wildlife. Manuel Antonio National Park and Poas Volcano National Park are among the most popular conservationist areas in Costa Rica. Cave tubing, zip lining and river rafting are some of the popular activities that travelers can enjoy at the parks. Some animal lovers prefer to have as many interactions with surrounding wildlife as possible. In that case, Costa Rica is the perfect place to be since it is an industry leader in ecotourism. Travelers can expect to see sea turtles, sloths and squirrel monkeys at any moment. 

Panama is considered a safe destination due to its well lit and well patrolled cities. Technically, Panama is ranked as number 68 on the Global Peace Index, so it is not as safe as Costa Rica . But it is still, relatively, one of the safest places to travel to in Central America. Although the country is certainly not crime free, there are safe areas to stay in. Boquete and Coronado are popular places to stay in Panama with high safety levels and low crime rates. The cities of Panama are considered safe, so travelers that prefer to stay in urban areas will feel comfortable. 

Panama has a diverse landscape. So travelers can encounter the desert, rainforests and beaches all in one trip. The lush tropical surroundings are only a part of the country’s overall tourism appeal. Panama has delicious cuisine. Some of the popular local dishes include rondón, gaucho, carimañolas and tamales. This country is also a great destination for backpacking or other outdoor activities, since the wildlife and natural environment is robust. Travelers can snorkel, fish, scuba dive and whale watch in Panama.

Belize 

Belize is a small Central American country on the east coast with a welcoming atmosphere. The destination is considered a relatively safe place to travel. Although the country experiences some crime , Belize is considered a safe place to visit. Because the country is so small, travelers will notice that it is not ranked in the Global Peace Index. But this exclusion does not mean that travelers should overlook Belize as a travel destination. As long as travelers exercise safety precautions in Belize, they are likely to have a safe and exciting trip to Central America. Some of the safest parts of Belize include Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Pedro. 

Visitors of Belize can experience an authentic cultural exchange where they can tap into the history, cuisine and ecotourism of the country. Nature-based tourism is a popular way for tourists to get to know the intriguing country. For example, the eco-tourism park Inland Blue Hole and St Herman’s Cave are great places to visit. There is also a wealth of knowledge about the Mayan roots of Belize that travelers should learn. There are even countless tours that teach visitors of the rich Mayan culture and explore the Mayan ruins around the country. The most popular cultural excursion is the Altun Ha ruins, but there are plenty of adventurous activities and unique adventures in Belize.

I know this is an exhaustive topic, but I can't seem to find the answer in a forum search. I apologize if this has ben previously covered and I missed it.

It depends on you, not on your itinerary. Anyone able to search, read and understand written text, fill a form can DIY. If the mere idea of searching, reading and filling makes you shudder, hire a helper by all means.

Of all the things you mention, the only thing you may well need some “extra help” with is getting a reasonable set of invite docs (as you correctly state, if you are not staying at a larger, regular hotel, you will be charged maybe $20), you can do this for maybe $20 on ANY reputable site...e-mailed in PDF form back within 24 hours. no need to pay a visa agency likely at least $100 extra per visa. Once you go on the site you are directed to, you will be given all details, and then a link to a web based app completion...one you can save, come back to...if you hit questions, often we can answer here...more often, the answer is here already, just need to do a quick query in the box above...

I'm in the current visa black hole that others are in after doing it myself with ILS which suddenly ceased operations, turning them over to VFS. Read some of the threads like "Another Russia Visa via Washington DC question " below in the forum. I'd pay the extra $100 in a heartbeat for the peace of mind and speed compared to what's going on (or rather NOT going on) with our applications and passports. But that's just my humble opinion.

i believe at this point both DC and NY are fully moved over to being submitted thru VFS...I would agree that indeed back when you did this, had you used an agency, they - with the fact that the larger ones are handling maybe 10s- 100 at any point in time - might have been able to intercede. BUT, if the site now points folks to VFS, less to be gained...

I ended up speaking to a man with ILS today, who recommended I call World Visit Center in DC to have them handle everything. Now I'm really confused, because if ILS closed, whom did I speak with???

*Edited to say I now see the disclosure on the website about VFS. Yet, the website is the same name. It's confusing!

I spent 2 hours today just trying to get an answer to the question "Do I file for a tourist or a private visa" and even the gentleman on the phone had a few questions before he could give me a final answer. The government consulate websites are incorrect, saying that the Seattle Visa Support office is still open, despite the closure of the consulate....I think I just might spring for the extra $ to save the time and headache.

IF you did, then you can simply follow the info as to which type of visa, etc.

As for them saying Seattle and San Fran offices are open, I did not fully check, but while the CONSULATES are closed, VFS may still have local presence and office to accept apps...

Also, as to whether tourist or private, unless you have REALLY good friends or close relatives there, you should choose tourist as, which you will find by reading further on the first site, the PRIVATE route involves quite a bit more hassle, not the least of which being you will need to get a PHYSICAL copy of the invitation documents required...what BTW is the main purpose for visiting?

Your links are so much better than what I found today! Google led me on a wild goose chase, and I ended up here, https://seattle.mid.ru/web/seattle-en/russian-visa-centers and https://ils-usa.com/news/175?domain=5&language=10 telling me that Seattle is still open, but then not being able to get through on the phone or via email. I don't even know where else I looked! Like I said, it was a 2 hour affair that just left me frustrated.

I admit it can be confusing especially with a TON of sites saying they are “Russian Consulate”. I have found as the links show IF you get to the real one, you are in pretty good shape. So, in summary, ILS is no longer in play, when in doubt, call or e-mail VFS...and, also, is Bellingham in Washington (state]...if so, then as I wrote, THEY have a physical presence, office...and presumably if you submit app and paperwork thru them (in person or via mail), then they, as the fully authorized AGENT (not simply a “visa agency”) for pretty much all Russian Consulates in the US, will handle the rest!
