The Charlatans and Ride Kick Off Co-Headlining Tour In NYC

  • By Ryan Dillon

Last night (January 30), UK alt legends The Charlatans kicked off their co-headlining tour with Ride as both bands celebrated their longevity by looking back to a time when their longevity was uncertain. With The Charlatans scheduled to perform their 1992 classic Between 10th and 11th while Ride will go through the entirety of their 1990 debut Nowhere with the bands also tossing in a few cuts from the rest of their discography to round out the tracklist. Along with full performances of classic albums, the two bands plan to switch off taking up the headlining spot throughout the tour. The tour was set off last night at Webster Hall in New York City as Ride kept true to the tour blueprint and The Charlatans took a more unconventional route for their set.

Looking through Ride’s setlist, there are no surprises. The band tore through their debut album with ease, performing the 8 songs from the original 1990 tracklist along with “Taste”, “Here and Now”, and “Nowhere” from the CD bonus tracklist. Ride rounded out their set with a two-song encore which included “Leave Them All Behind” from the band’s ‘92 album Going Back Again and “Lannoy Point” from their more recent 2017 album Weather Diaries .

While Ride stuck to the blueprint of the tour, The Charlatans seemed to take a different approach. According to Setlist.fm , the band stayed true to their word with the first 9 songs being taken from 10th and 11th , although the band did leave off the 10th track from the album by skipping over track 6 “Subtitle”. Instead of rounding out the promised tracklist, the band launched into other tracks from their storied discography, including “Here Comes A Soul Saver” and “Just When You’re Thinkin’ Things Over” from their self-titled LP. The band also began to perform “You’re So Pretty – We’re So Pretty” but the performance of the song was cut short for reasons unknown.

The remainder of the tour will have both bands traversing across North America with their 2nd NYC show taking place tonight at Brooklyn Steel before the tour heads out to cities like Toronto, Detroit, Portland, and Los Angeles. Check out the full setlist, full list of tour dates, and footage from last night’s show below.

The Charlatans and Ride have announced plans for a North American co-headline tour, set to begin January 30, 2023 at New York City’s Webster Hall and then continue through a February 18 finale at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for all announced dates go on sale Friday, December 2 at 10 am (local).

In 1993, The Charlatans and Ride co-headlined Daytripper—two now-legendary concert events held in the British seaside towns of Brighton and Blackpool. The upcoming North American tour will once again see the two bands trading off the headline slot each night, with both performing classic albums in full–The Charlatans performing 1992’s landmark sophomore LP, Between 10th and 11th , and Ride performing 1990’s debut masterpiece, Nowhere –along with a selection of greatest hits, fan favorites, and more.

The Charlatans have been on a remarkable journey for over three decades, from their beginnings as 1990 Manchester scene hopefuls to their current role as one of the most durable and treasured bands in British music, joined by a passionate and loyal following that has given them lasting success. Somehow, the band have not just carried on during this run but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound–driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars, and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocals–is instantly recognizable.

‘Dry’: How PJ Harvey’s Debut Foreshadowed Her Future

Hailed by PopMatters as “a certifiable classic,” Between 10th and 11th was originally released in 1992 and features such classic singles as “Tremolo Song,” “I Don’t Want To See The Sights,” and the band’s biggest US hit to date, “Weirdo.” More recently, The Charlatans celebrated their own 30th anniversary with 2021’s career-spanning best-of, A Head Full of Ideas , and a similarly titled 2021-22 world tour.

In addition, frontman Tim Burgess has created the hugely popular Tim’s Twitter Listening Party, an ongoing series of real-time album playbacks via Twitter, featuring stories from bands and fans, rarely seen images, and exclusive insights and anecdotes from the artists who created some of music’s most iconic albums.

The Charlatans (sometimes known as The Charlatans UK) are an English indie rock band formed in 1989, from both the West Midlands and Northwich, Chester.

The band was started by bassist Martin Blunt, who roped in fellow Midlanders, Rob Collins and Jon Brookes, as well as front man Tim Burgess, who was from Northwich. As the band recorded demos and became known on the underground scene, they were often attributed to being a part of the late 80s “Madchester” scene, mainly due to Burgess’ Mancunian roots, but in actual fact, they were recording their music in Birmingham.

However the band moved to Chester in 1990 as they released their debut single “Indian Rope”. After gaining a buzz on the indie circuit, the band were snapped up by major label Situation Two, who released their first top ten single, “The One I Only Know”. Their debut album “Some Friendly” quickly followed, debuting at number one in the UK Charts, as they established themselves as a major force in the early Britpop days.

Their second album “Between 10th and 11th” was released in 1992, and saw The Charlatans taste international success, as their single “Weirdo” charted at Number 1 in the US alternative charts. The band continued their chart topping ways in 1995, when their eponymous debuted at number one in the UK album charts.

During the writing and recording of their next album, 1997’s “Tellin’ Stories”, founding member Rob Collins was killed in a car crash, making it the last release to feature his work. It was the band's most commercially successful album, featuring three top ten singles.

Since 2000, the band have released a further handful of albums, on Universal Records, Sancturary Records and Cooking Vinyl. All of the Charlatans albums have successfully charted in the UK Top 40. The band has also played a variety of high profile gigs such as opening for the Rolling Stones and The Who.

In 2013, the band announced that drummer Jon Brookes had lost his battle with brain cancer. The band played a tribute show for Brookes, and other bands such as Beady Eye and Manic Street Preachers joined them. Money made from the night went towards The Brain Tumour Charity, who have set up a fund in Brookes' name.

Live reviews

Once upon a time, it felt like The Charlatans were going to rule the music world following a series of consistently hit-filled albums which culminated in 1997’s Telling Stories. Sadly, tragedy intervened in the band’s career, taking from them their incredibly talented keyboardist Rob Collins at far too early an age, stalling their successes. Before all that, The Charlatans burst out of Northwich in the Black Country via the indie-dancefloor classic ‘The Only One I Know’, taken from their 1990 LP Some Friendly. They probably peaked with 1995’s self-titled record, inspired by US artists loved by singer Tim Burgess as much as it was by the UK’s burgeoning dance scene. Later albums saw the band dipping their toes into country and Curtis Mayfield-esque soul with varying levels of success. The band sadly lost a second member, drummer Jon Brookes, to cancer in 2012, leaving Burgess, Mark Collins and Martin Blunt as the only original members. To see The Charlatans live is to be regaled with a set full of familiar hits providing comfort and euphoria in equal measure. Burgess’ voice has aged surprisingly well (thanks in part to a varied solo career running beside his band’s) and it’s a sheer delight to hear ‘Can’t Get Out of Bed’, ‘North Country Boy’ and ‘One to Another’ delivered with as much power as they were fifteen years ago. And of course, stick around for the encore and you’ll be exhilarated by every fan’s favourite Charlies moment – ‘Sproston Green’.

I've seen the Charlatans over 30 times. This was by far the least enjoyable. The band did nothing wrong and were in great form, as they always are.

I've seen them do 2 of these double header gigs with James and I have to say that I don't really get it. Having a show like this so close to Christmas just seems to attract what I call 'commadores', as in once, twice, three gigs a year. Pissed up idiots who are only there to sing along to Sit Down by James or North Country Boy by The Charlatans. They stand around talking or making repeat trips to the bar whilst moaning about the band not playing enough hits. In reality they're not huge fans of either band, they're just there to kill two birds with one stone.

There's no such thing as a co-headlining gig. One band will always be a support act. The Charlatans are too good to be supporting James and vice versa. Just because neither band is capable of selling out arena's on their own these days doesn't mean that sticking them on the same bill in an arena is a good idea.

Personally I'd much rather see The Charlatans and James doing their own headline show each, in a smaller venue like Manchester Apollo.

The real fans would certainly find it a far more rewarding experience.

Is there a better way than spending a warm summer evening in the company of the Charlatans?

Blossoms opened proceedings and I was intrigued to see whether Blossoms would live up to the hype and they did pretty well would love to see them headline their own show indoors somewhere.

Super Furry Animals were next on and although 6 years on from the last time I saw them it felt like they'd never been away.

Coming on to the Coronation Street theme, Tim Burgess grinning like the Cheshire Cat, the band launched into hit after hit finishing with an epic version of Sproston Green. I can't think of an other band where there is so much mutual love and goodwill between audience and band. A fantastic evening for all involved.

I didn’t realise just how much I’d missed The Charlatans until Friday night’s gig at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. Tim Burgess is one of British music’s most underrated front-men - full of energy and banter, as he and the band filled the intimate venue with a set of greatest hits. ‘Back in the day’ The Charlatans were sometimes overshadowed by their baggy contemporaries - but this gig was a reminder of their consistent output over the years. Each and every song provoked a trip down memory lane, whilst also being a timeless classic. A very hot night for a rather cool return.

These guys still have it!... Great new album. Tim Burgess never seems to age, is the Peter Pan of the band with the coolest hair cut in town. So much time and appreciation for their fans they all took photos and signed every purchased album. I left feeling special and touched by these guys. An evening to remember.

My first time seeing the Charlies. They sounded good. Tim's hair was a bit of disaster but that is as bad as it got. The set list was the same as they did in Japan no suprises there. 9 out of 10!

Big Sean: Tiny Desk Concert

Headshot of Bobby Carter

Bobby Carter

Credit: Photo: Michael Zamora

Most artists who play the Tiny Desk leave behind a small memento to live on the shelves. Big Sean gave us his special Detroit Tigers/ J Dilla baseball cap, an item that speaks to who he is as an artist. Sean doesn't allow too much time to pass without reminding you of his native Detroit, and his most recent freestyle samples an instrumental from the late great J Dilla. Sean pushed our boundaries, presenting one of the longest set lists in Tiny Desk history, but was also extremely gracious and collaborative with our team. This wasn't just another appearance for him. "It's something my kids can look back on, something my family can look back on to see where I was at in my career," he said before closing with the rambunctious "I Don't F*** With You."

Sean Anderson's journey from a high-pitched kid pining for the attention of Ye to one of the most respected lyricists and hitmakers in hip-hop is cleverly packed into this Tiny Desk concert. One of my favorite moments was when he touched on his background as a blog-era emcee. Most of the current kings and queens of hip-hop came up in the same era, and it's hard to fathom what the culture would be without that class. Every word and song of his performance was deliberate: from "Memories" right up to the world premiere of "On Up," a song dedicated to his son, Noah, whom he shares with singer Jhené Aiko , who also gets a bit of shine during his set.

The Black Crowes kick off tour in Nashville with high-energy show featuring Lainey Wilson

charlatans tour setlist

The Black Crowes' brothers Chris and Rich Robinson kicked off their 35-date "Happiness Bastards" tour Tuesday night at the Opry House in Nashville and introduced the crowd to arguably some of their best new music in decades backed up with a few classic favorites and choice cover tunes.

On a minimal set decorated only with strings of white lights, uniquely mismatched Marshall stacks, a life-size dressing room mirror, and a cardboard cutout of Chuck Berry peeking from behind the curtain, the Crowes gave the crowd exactly what they'd been hoping for: Chris' pipes of steel, Rich's excellent guitar chops and a surprise appearance by Lainey Wilson.

"If you're going to play the Grand Ole Opry, you have to bring out a bona fide country superstar," Chris told the crowd as he welcomed Wilson to the stage. She sang a duet from the new album called "Wilted Rose" and then stayed to back the brothers on a powerful version of "She Talks to Angels."

Chris danced and strutted across the stage in typical Black Crowes fashion, while his brother Rich focused on his guitar playing.

Kicking off the night at the packed-out Opry House despite looming severe weather Tuesday night were "Bedside Manners" and "Rats and Clowns" from the new album, "Happiness Bastards," which is the group's first original release in 15 years.

Lauren Daigle, Tyler Childers, Mitski: 10 can't-miss concerts in Nashville this April

"It's been a little while since we've had some new songs to play for you all," Chris Robinson teased the crowd.

Next came an old favorite, "Twice as Hard" from the band's 1990 smash "Shake Your Money Maker." The band would layer in hits from that first album including "Remedy," "Jealous Again," and their biggest hit they didn't write, "Hard to Handle."

"A few years ago, we were lucky enough to have the idea to record this song," he said of "Hard to Handle." "Written by the greatest soul singer of all time from Macon, Georgia. His name was Otis Redding and we've been riding on this song for a long time."

The band seemed to enjoy performing the show as much as the crowd enjoyed watching it and dancing to it. The Crowes played for a solid 90 minutes before leaving the stage briefly to return for a one-song encore with Lou Reed's "White Light/White Heat."

It was a great way to kick off this new tour, which Chris Robinson said was not the first one they've started in Nashville.

"This marks two tours we've started in Nashville," he said. "Maybe this could become a thing."
