Ships from other cruise lines, like the Queen Mary 2 or Carnival's Mardi Gras , offer more refined or adult fun-heavy experiences, respectively. The length of your vacation also matters. You cannot book a 2 nights or 3 nights cruise from Charleston, as all voyages begin with 4 night minimums. However, your trip can span a weekend cruise from Charleston, extending into the next week.

Guide to Charleston Cruise Parking (Where to Park)

Given the lack of major airports in the area (Charleston International is relatively small), many cruise passengers heading out of Charleston elect to drive to the port. In fact, cities including Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta, Jacksonville, Savannah, and all points in between are within a manageable drive from the port.

If you are driving into town, this brings up the question of what to do with your car while you are on your trip. While you have a few options, the best choice for most is parking at the port’s official lot, right next to the ship. The port’s parking is the most convenient and reasonably priced.

We have details of your options below. ( Charleston park & cruise hotels do offer more choices  if you plan to stay in the city the night before your cruise.)

Official Port Parking (At the Ship)

The Charleston cruise port offers the most convenient parking option, located right at the port and a short ride aboard a shuttle (or walk) to the ship. Most people elect to park here for their cruise.

To reach the lot, you need to enter the port at Gate #2, located north of the port at the intersection of Laurens and Concord Streets.

Charleston, South Carolina cruise parking map

When you first arrive, be sure to have your cruise papers with you. They will be checked as only people sailing on the cruise will be allowed into the port parking area. Once inside the gate, you will be put into a snaking line to pay for your parking, unload baggage, and then park your car. There is ample space for parking, so reservations are not required.

The parking rate is $21 per day for regular vehicles. Campers and RVs are charged $50 per day. Vehicles with handicapped permits (placard or license plate) may park free of charge. Money orders and major credit/debit cards are accepted for payment. Cash and personal checks are not accepted .

Once parked, a shuttle is provided between the parking lot and the cruise terminal.

  • Cost: $21 per day
  • Distance: At port

Park & Go Charleston Cruise Port Parking

Given that Charleston is a relatively small port, there aren’t as many independent cruise parking lots like you will find around major ports. Still, there is one option — Park and Go.

The lot is actually an airport parking lot that’s now opened to cruise parking. That means it’s actually right near the airport, which is about 10 miles away from the cruise port. Still, with a daily rate of $10 per day, you’ll save half of what you’d pay at the cruise port for parking at the ship. On a week long trip, that’s $70.

One thing to note is that there is no shuttle to the cruise ship. You’ll need to get a ride to the cruise port (see our port transportation page here ). While that’s an added expense, the lower cost of the parking lot more than makes up for the price of the ride.

Park & Go has about 250 parking spaces. For that reason, it’s a good idea to make a reservation online ahead of time before your cruise to make sure there’s a spot for you.

  • Cost: $10 per day
  • Distance: 10 miles (no shuttle provided)
  • Website: http://park-go.com/

Hotels with Cruise Parking

It’s a little-known tip, but if you plan to stay in the Charleston area before or after your cruise, then a number of hotels will offer free or discounted parking for your trip . All you have to do is stay with the hotel for one or more nights. We’ve rounded up a list of Charleston hotels with cruise parking specials here .

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free parking at the port for disabled passengers? Yes! These days many ports offer perks like free parking to those with disabilities and veterans, including the Port of Charleston. According to their website:

“Complimentary parking is provided at no fee for vehicles displaying a valid handicap placard or license plate with ID.”

Keep in mind this is only for the official port parking at the pier. Hotels and independent lots don’t offer this perk.

Can I reserve port parking ahead of time? Are you the type of person who likes to have everything all squared away before you travel? We understand, but there is no reason to do so when parking in Charleston. The port specifies on its website that reservations are not required. Simply show up on the day of your cruise and you’ll have a spot to park.

Cruise ships to no longer depart from Charleston after 2024

Cruise ships will no longer start their journeys from Charleston by the end of 2024, the South Carolina Ports Authority said.

The authority decided to not renew a deal with Carnival Cruise Line that allowed cruises to begin and end from the Union Pier Terminal in downtown Charleston.

Cruise ships can continue to dock at Charleston, but only for brief, same-day port of call stops, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported.

The decision should cut the number of cruise passengers in Charleston down by 80%, officials said.

The State Ports Authority said it will no longer work on plans to redevelop a warehouse at the Union Pier into a cruise terminal. Permits to start the project have been tied up for years by lawsuits from conservation and historical preservation groups.

Instead, the authority said it will look into selling the land it owns to a private developer.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg said the decision by the authority will improve the quality of life in his city.

“We’re grateful to the port for taking this critically important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with (State Ports Authority) to make Union Pier a beautiful and vibrant part of the city of Charleston,” Tecklenburg said.

Currently, about 70 cruises a year leave Charleston for the Bahamas and other Eastern Caribbean destinations.

Carnival Cruise Line officials said they will continue to work with the authority to find options to use Charleston.

“In the meantime, it is business as usual, and we look forward to seeing our guests aboard Carnival Sunshine through 2024,” Carnival spokesman Matt Lupoli said.

After that deal is finished, the Ports Authority said it will continue to follow a voluntary limit of no more than 104 cruise ship visits a year, and no stops by ships that carry more than 3,500 passengers.

Search for missing South Carolina cruise passenger complicated by jungle terrain as family demands US help

A once-hopeful search for a South Carolina man who went missing last week during a cruise excursion in Cozumel, Mexico, is dimming.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III's family, including his daughter and wife, have been using social media and physically scouring the island with several local law enforcement agencies, but promising leads have become dead ends and theories are running dry.

Solomon was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in Cozumel, where he got off the ship, went to the bathroom and vanished, his family said.

"I am terrified that if I don’t post something our story will become irrelevant, and that the U.S. will forget about us," Solomon's daughter, Savannah Miller, wrote on Facebook. "I am trying to think of something to say to keep everyone updated, but I am feeling empty and discouraged and exhausted.

SOUTH CAROLINA MAN VANISHES FROM CRUISE AFTER GETTING OFF AT POPULAR PORT OF COZUMEL, MEXICO

"I thought I was already losing my dad to FTD (frontotemporal dementia), but being unable to physically locate him is 100x more traumatic than any degenerative disease."

READ ON THE FOX NEWS APP

Miller is referring to her dad's recent diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

Known as "Brad," the 66-year-old Charleston family patriarch was enjoying retired life after 20 years as a VA critical case nurse with his wife Mimi, who is also a nurse and a breast cancer survivor.

VICTIM'S CAUSE OF DEATH IN 40-YEAR-OLD COLD CASE CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES, CASE LED TO SUICIDE AND TORE FAMILY APART

They were on a cruise, stopped for an excursion to spend the day on Cozumel, a remote island off the coast of Mexico , when his family believes he wandered off after using the bathroom within minutes of getting off the ship.

His daughter and other family members quickly dropped everything and flew to the popular tourist spot to join Mimi and the search with local law enforcement.

After a week, Solomon is still missing, and the ups and downs from potentially hopeful tips that lead to nothing is wearing on the family's mental state.

"It angers me that everyone else’s lives are continuing, but we are stuck in this horrifying level of hell," Miller said. "If you are in America, please continue to kick and scream about us to catch media and U.S. government attention so that we can be allocated additional search and rescue resources.

"Empathy, selflessness, and the endless capacity to love are my dad’s most distinctive traits, and they are the ones that still linger despite his personality-stealing disease. If you know him, you know he would do this for you."

BRUTALLY VIOLENT MEXICAN CARTEL DRAINING AMERICANS' LIFE SAVINGS IN COMPLEX SCAM AS REVENUE RIVALS DRUG TRADE

Solomon's family and friends have been sharing missing posters with loving anecdotes about how "Brad" has helped them. Missing Persons of America, a Facebook group created by a military family, created its own missing person flyers in the U.S. to complement the official missing persons bulletin in Cozumel.

Miller continues to plead with people in the U.S. and Cozumel to "spread the word."

"We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him," she said.

STUDENTS UNCOVER ‘BIBLE BELT STRANGLER’ AS SERIAL KILLER CULPRIT IN ‘REDHEAD MURDERS’

Local news outlet Conexión Urbana has been covering the search in Cozumel and shared photos with Fox News Digital.

"Since the manifestation of relatives themselves, authorities have set up a search operation that keeps up to date, which has sparked the interest of citizens and the American community on the island, who have joined the search efforts," Conexión Urbana reported in a translated Facebook post.

"The municipal Civil Protection authorities have expressed their total recognition to the solidarity of the community, however, urges the need that any civic action in this regard, should include the coordination and supervision of the authorities expert in the subject, in order to avoid endangering the safety of those in solidarity supporting these search efforts, especially groups seeking internship in the jungle or at risk areas on the island."

Miller told Fox News Digital they have been following local authorities' lead since they arrived on the island while coordinating their own public awareness campaign across social media platforms.

However, the toll it is taking is becoming overbearing.

AMERICANS, INCLUDING SOUTH CAROLINA COUPLE, STRANDED BY NORWEGIAN CRUISE SAVE ELDERLY PASSENGER, FAMILY SAYS: SHIP ‘LEFT HER TO DIE’

"I have asked those surrounding me in Cozumel not to keep me informed of specific search efforts, lead, or other information because it’s making me too anxious and upset. I don’t have the bandwidth or the energy anymore," Miller wrote on Facebook.

Conexión Urbana reported a large-scale search earlier this week that included flyovers and ground searches with a rescue dog named Lune "in the most difficult (areas) to access," which included jungles and the surrounding areas.

"My dad walks really fast, and he does not have eyeglasses on like he usually does," Miller said in a previous interview. "He will often nod his head down and focus on the ground while walking. The more anxious he is feeling, the quicker he goes."

He "generally has a calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," she said, which worries her and family that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him seem confident he knows where he is going.

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family.

In the U.S., family and friends set up a GoFundMe for the family.

"Between cancer and dementia, (Mimi and Solomon III) have been through so much in the last few years and yet Mimi still shows up every day to take care of others," the GoFundMe says. "Please help take care of Mimi and Brad."

Miller said anyone in Cozumel should send tips to the Cozumel police.

For anyone in the U.S., "we ask that they continue to share the story and sentiments about my dad if they know him to raise awareness and to stay positive."

Edmond Bradley Solomon III turned 66 at sea, celebrating his birthday on an enormous cruise ship cutting through idyllic Caribbean waters.

It was a momentous day on a significant trip, said his daughter Savannah Miller. In the fall of 2022, doctors diagnosed him with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, a neurodegenerative disorder that’s slowly eroding Solomon’s independence.

Miller, 29, has observed her dad — a gregarious surfer and former critical care nurse from West Ashley — grow more reserved and anxious as his wife, Mimi Hyer Solomon, has assumed a caregiving role.

The Royal Caribbean voyage was supposed to be the couple’s last big vacation. On April 3, however, the seven-day trip took a nightmarish turn. Four days after Solomon’s birthday, he wandered off in a market in Cozumel, Mexico, an island rimmed by white sands and carpeted with dense jungle.

Solomon’s family hasn’t stopped searching for him since.

Miller was in the United States when she heard her father was missing. She has since pieced together the events that led to his disappearance: with the boat docked, her father and stepmother ducked into restrooms at a shopping area near Cozumel’s cruise terminal. Miller believes that Solomon exited first, rejoining an unfamiliar landscape of vendors and souvenirs; when he didn’t spot his wife, he set off in search of her, his daughter suspects.

Mimi left the bathroom. Anguished minutes passed. She soon realized Solomon was missing — and plunged into panic.

An all-hands-on-deck search ensued.

Mimi disembarked, while some of her family members stayed on the boat. She hopped into the car of a security guard, and together they scoured the streets of Cozumel. But Solomon walks fast, his strides decisive — especially when he’s anxious, Miller said. As the sun set that day, he was nowhere to be seen.

Since then, Mimi has worked with local police and public safety officials to launch a search. Miller said confusion about who was in charge initially stymied efforts. But a strategy has since prevailed, with the Mexican military largely taking the lead. A few days ago, Miller and her boyfriend boarded a plane bound for Mexico, joining the multi-agency push to locate Solomon.

Cozumel is a tiny, touristy island. Cruise ship passengers traveling through have offered to spend their vacations searching for Solomon, Miller said. Locals are rallying around the family, and news stations near and far are spotlighting their plight.

Such collaboration has heartened Miller, who spoke with The Post and Courier on the search’s ninth day. For now, the strategy is for everyone — tourists, locals, officials — to fan out, sweeping the island in a massive grid pattern. Some people are traversing the city’s plazas on foot, while others crisscross the region’s scrubby jungle on ATVs. The family set up a tip line to field calls reporting sightings, though Miller said most are unsubstantiated.

She added that anyone who spots Solomon should trail him from afar, then call the bilingual operators at +52 987-262-8178. The day Solomon disappeared, security footage spotted him wearing a white linen button-down shirt and gray shorts.

Miller has posted near daily updates on Facebook , a log of the pained days since April 3. Ashley Hyer-Miller, Solomon’s sister-in-law, is also documenting the ordeal on social media: family members renting off-road vehicles to reach remote areas, appeals for prayers, shoutouts to Cozumel residents.

A GoFundMe page , too, is collecting contributions for Mimi, a nurse who met Solomon at work. The fundraiser grew out of a group of nurses that worked with the family through the years. Marissa Aldridge, who organized the fundraiser, said Mimi shaped her life as her boss. Aldridge, a 35-year-old Johns Island resident, said Mimi was always someone who stepped up to fill in for other people or be there for them.

"We need to support Mimi so we can support Brad," Aldridge said. "That has been our view as a group for several years."

Solomon, a West Ashley native, raised Miller as a single father for much of her childhood. Everyone called him “Mr. Mom.” When he met Mimi, Miller was thrilled, and she eagerly walked her dad down the aisle. Years after that backyard ceremony on Edisto Island, Mimi has become a cheerleader for Miller and a caregiver for Solomon.

“Our family is incomplete without all 3 of us,” Miller wrote on Facebook. “We will find him and bring him home.”

Until last year, Solomon was still riding waves off Isle of Palms, still reeling in redfish off the coast, his daughter said. Aldridge said Mimi and Solomon were on the vacation they had planned together for years. He remains somewhere in Cozumel, nearly 3,000 miles from home.

The search continues.

U.S. man with dementia disappears after leaving his cruise ship in Mexico

A 66-year-old South Carolina man has been missing for several days after vanishing while on vacation in Mexico.

Edmond Bradley Solomon III, of Charleston, was last seen on April 3, after getting off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in Cozumel, Mexico, according to Fox News.

A few minutes after getting off the ship, he and his wife, Mimi, went to use the restrooms at the terminal. When his wife came out, he wasn’t waiting for her and wasn’t in the bathroom.

“That was the point that we knew he was lost,” Soloman’s daughter, Savannah Miller said to WCBD. “We know that no matter where he was he would have difficulty understanding what was going on and communicating his needs due to his dementia. I think everyone just immediately became so terrified for his safety.”

His family said he was recently diagnosed frontotemporal dementia , which affects a person’s behavior rather than their memory.

“He sometimes says odd things and behaves erratically — or oddly — because he’s just doing what he knows how to do,” Miller said to the news station. “He can’t process the same way you or I can.”

Solomon was last seen along the road of Isla de la Pasión in Cozumel on Wednesday evening. He was wearing a white T-shirt, grey shorts, and dark sunglasses, WCBD said.

Soloman was reported missing on April 3 and a search and rescue operation was launched that same day, the New York Post said. A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for the family’s travel expenses.

“I think the best thing that anyone can do is just spread the word,” Miller said to WCBD. Start yelling and screaming. Elevate it as much as possible so that there is awareness and so everyone on the island is looking for him.”

Lowcountry man disappears in Mexico; family determined to find him

by Lauren Lennon

MEXICO (WCIV) — A Lowcountry family is searching for a loved one lost abroad.

Savannah Miller says her family's Royal Caribbean cruise was docked at an island Mexico when her father, Edmond Bradley Solomon III, who she says has frontotemporal dementia, had gotten lost.

"I got a call Thursday morning around 5:30 from my grandparents and I had had a couple missed calls from them," Miller said. "I knew something was happening, something not good. They told me that my dad was lost."

“They were still in the terminal between where the cruise ships are and the rest of the city," Miller continued. "My dad went to the restroom. Then my uncle Brian asked where he was. My dad wasn't in the restroom any longer. And at that moment, we knew he was lost."

That call led to Miller leaving Charleston to go to Mexico and join in on the search.

"I knew that I needed to come to Mexico to help," she said. "I landed in Cozumel, Mexico yesterday."

"A couple of us are going go on bikes today," Miller said. "We've narrowed our zone to what we were looking. We have two representatives from Royal Caribbean who have been incredible helping us navigate, translate all the things."

Miller says because of the type of dementia her father has, locals may not have noticed he was lost.

"I think if you were to approach him and have a short conversation with him, you would know that something's up, but you wouldn't know what," she said. "It's unlike what you would typically think of dementia or Alzheimer's in that his memory is completely intact. But he is no longer able to take in and process new information as it relates to anything in his frontal lobe, which is personality, emotions, and understanding complex processes."

Miller provided a picture she received from local law enforcement, showing what is believed to be her father walking the streets.

"He looks like he knows where he's going, but I can assure you that he does not," she said. "It's just the way that he appears because of his disease."

When contacted, Royal Caribbean said, "We are working closely with local law enforcement, who is continuing the search for the guest. Our care team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time."

A GoFundMe for the family has passed its $5,000 goal.

5 things you didn’t know about traveling on cruise ships

A beloved dad's family has sifted through false leads and hit dead ends over the last five days after Edmond Bradley Solomon III vanished.

The 66-year-old Charleston, South Carolina , family patriarch was last seen on April 3, when a Royal Caribbean cruise ship stopped in the popular tourist hot spot Cozumel, Mexico.

Minutes after getting off the ship, he went to the bathroom and disappeared, according to his family, who said he was recently diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia , a group of diseases caused by progressive nerve cell loss that affects a person’s behavior and not memory.

"No major updates. Many false leads today," his daughter, Savannah Miller, said Monday morning from Mexico. "It is very distressing for us to have hope and then be let down."

Solomon was on a Royal Caribbean cruise with his wife, Mimi, when they stopped in Mexico, where they planned to spend the day.

He went to the bathroom around 1-1:30 p.m., minutes after they got off the ship.

"When my stepmom, Mimi, came out, he wasn’t there," Miller told WCBD-TV . "She thought he might still be in the bathroom, so she waited for him for a few minutes. He didn’t come out."

Solomon spent his life caring for others as a VA critical care nurse. He retired after 20 years, Miller told Fox News Digital, and his wife is also a nurse at a local VA hospital and a breast cancer survivor.

"Please, everyone, no matter where you are, continue to spread the word," Miller said. "We are begging you to share this on socials, so that we can increase awareness and gain more news coverage. The more people who are aware, the quicker we will find him."

Over the last few days, local police and the retired nurse's family have been scouring Cozumel, an island in the Caribbean off the coast of Mexico.

Miller said her family and police followed "several leads" to no avail. The most promising tip came at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, when someone thought they had seen him at a large grocery store.

However, she told Fox News Digital that police investigated the tip, but it did not lead to anything. "After three hours of driving and walking the surrounding areas, we were not able to find him," she said.

Solomon III's tendencies

Solomon "has a generally calm or apathetic attitude, and will probably refuse help if offered, especially from a stranger," Miller said.

She and her family are worried that this trait, coupled with his fast-paced walk, makes him look like he is heading somewhere "with conviction."

"But he is not," Miller said. "He is lost and scared. He cannot show or process emotions like a healthy person would. Unfamiliar people or situations are intimidating to him. He does not know how to respond and will avoid."

She said everyone in Cozumel has been helpful and kind to her and her family as they navigate through the stormy waters.

Woman dead after bus hits group outside Hawaii cruise ship terminal

HONOLULU ( KHON ) — A woman is dead and several others — including her family members — were injured after a shuttle bus crashed into a group of pedestrians in Honolulu.

The bus, driven by a 57-year-old man, was dropping off customers at the cruise terminal in Honolulu Friday morning, according to authorities.

The driver, who has not been identified, allegedly stepped out of the vehicle without realizing the shuttle was still moving. A nearby bystander reportedly alerted him of what was happening and he quickly jumped into the driver’s seat to attempt to stop the vehicle.

However, instead of pressing on the brake, the man appeared to step on the gas pedal, causing the shuttle to crash into two concrete barriers and five pedestrians, according to Honolulu police.

Lillian Lee saw the chaotic scene unfold.

“He went back in and of course he wanted to step on the brake but I think he panicked and stepped on the gas and he was hurt as well,” Lee told Nexstar’s KHON. “There were people pinned between the wall and the van.”

A 68-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the Queen’s Medical Center.

The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii told KHON that the Illinois woman was traveling with her husband, her cousin and her cousin’s husband. It was a couple’s retreat, with both of them celebrating wedding anniversaries. The woman’s family members are expected to recover from their injuries.

Paramedics evaluated and bandaged six others who declined transportation to the hospital, said Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Shayne Enright.

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Lines said nine of its guests, who traveled on Carnival Miracle were struck by the bus. The ship had departed from Long Beach, California, on April 6 for a 15-day trip.

“Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests,” the company said in a statement Friday. “Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones.”

A man in his 70s, who was in stable condition; and four people in serious condition — a 67-year-old man, a 67-year-old woman, a 58-year-old man, and a 55-year-old woman — were listed as patients by police on Friday. Their conditions as of Sunday are unknown.

Police said they are investigating the incident as an active fatal investigation. They added that speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
