In fact, here at the Good Housekeeping Institute, we’ve done enough boiling and brewing to know that you shouldn’t judge a kettle by its cost; some of the best budget kettles perform just as impressively as those with a premium price tag.

How much should you spend on a kettle?

We’ve tested top-scoring kettles ranging from a pocket-friendly £26 all the way up to a whopping £200, so what exactly are you paying for?

Often, it’s a question of aesthetics. Some of the bigger brands use high-quality materials with a more luxurious finish, and in a rainbow of colours or decorative metallics, while the cheaper own-brands often have plastic exteriors and perhaps only one or two colour choices.

Splashing out more on a kettle can buy you smart features, variable temperature settings and cool-touch walls, but these fancy details aren’t essential and won’t make much difference to your everyday cuppa.

How we test kettles

Our kettle testing is thirsty work. Over the years, we’ve put 182 kettles to the test at the GHI , boiling enough water to brew 5460 cups of tea.

We do more than simply unwind with a brew, though. In our kettle tests, we look at everything from the accuracy of filling each one from a tap to the pouring precision into a hot water bottle, checking for splashing and spillages.

Next, we measure how long it takes to boil each kettle at different capacities. We also take the temperature of the external casing when water is freshly boiled and we look at how easy the kettle is to use based on how clear the water level gauge is to see, if the filter is easy to remove for cleaning and refit, and how comfortable the kettle is to hold.

Finally, we take into account the overall design, as well as how clear and concise the instructions are.

Score: 90/100

This kettle is among the most compact we’ve tested and the wide, rounded spout makes for fast filling and an accurate and clean pour. When boiling a full kettle, the external casing temperature also remained cool to touch.

While Swan says it's a "rapid boil" model, we didn’t find it faster than others here. It took on average under two minutes to boil one litre of water and a little over a minute to boil half a litre.

This Russell Hobbs kettle is easy to fill through the spout and is also lightweight, at under 1kg when empty. It boils one cup of water in under 45 seconds, so it’s ideal for people who usually only make one hot drink at a time.

We found that it pours cleanly and accurately with no splashing, too. The water gauge is behind the handle, which means you can’t see it well while you’re filling the kettle. But, overall, it's a reliable pick at a reasonable price – and it comes in three colours.

Here's another great-value Russell Hobbs model that comes in a good range of colours. This one also has an illuminated water level gauge that lights up when it's boiling and switches off when it’s ready. We found it fast for smaller volumes too, taking a speedy 46 seconds to boil 240ml. At full capacity, though, it took almost four minutes to boil.

It has markers for one, two and three cups on the inside, which are helpful if you want to boil specific amounts. It's worth noting that while the handle remained cool, the kettle's exterior reached 63C, so you should take care when handling it.

Weighing just 741g when empty, this was one of the lightest kettles we’ve tested and even when filled to the max, our testers found it manageable to carry and pour. Boiling took just under a minute and there was no spitting, dripping or leaking when brewing the water for a cuppa.

The main downside with this kettle is its minimum capacity. At 600ml, you’ll always have to boil enough water for two cups. This is something to consider if you mostly make tea for one but if you’re in a household where the kettle is always on, then this is a reliable buy.

Another great option from Salter, this is slightly cheaper and has an expert-pleasing lightweight and ergonomic design, which makes it easy to pour. Our testers also appreciated the indicator light and easy-to-read water level gauge.

It was quick at boiling up to a litre of water but you’ll have to wait three and a half minutes if you need a full kettle’s worth. Note that the casing was quite hot after a long boil. That niggle aside, it was easy to clean, and its modern aesthetic should fit into any kitchen.

Score: 86/100

A simple yet classic kettle, this is a great buy for small households thanks to its speedy 50 second boil for one cup of water. When full, it took four minutes.

Our testers found the sharp spout made it easy to avoid spillages and they liked the way the water gauge tells you the number of cups inside. Take care to avoid touching the outer casing after boiling as it was hot on test.

This unique stainless steel design will stand out in modern kitchens. Its flip-top lid was easy to remove, which made filling the kettle simple and our testers praised the spout for its clean pouring, even when full.

With a minimum capacity of 235ml, solo tea drinkers can enjoy an energy-efficient boil without heating more water than necessary – plus, it only takes an average of 45 seconds, meaning you can be enjoying a cuppa in no time at all.

Just be aware that the outer casing got hot on test and it also emitted a lot of steam from the spout.

Our testers were pleased with how quickly it boiled water across a range of volumes, and even at maximum capacity, this kettle didn’t drip or spill when pouring. They noted some spilling when filling it via the spout, however, and there isn’t a removable filter, which isn’t ideal for cleaning purposes. But these are small niggles for an otherwise great kettle.

They have a crucial job in our kitchens, but there’s a lot more to a good kettle than meets the eye, so we’ve broken down the different things to consider when you’re shopping for your next one.

When you’re in need of a morning cup of tea or coffee, you don’t want to be waiting around. A power element of 3kW is generally the best for a quick boil and all of our top-scoring kettles have this wattage.

Want to know how many cups of tea you can get from your kettle? Most hold between 1.5 and 1.7 litres of water. An average cup of tea is 250ml, which means you should be able to boil enough for six to seven cups at a time.

If you normally brew one cup at a time, then double check the minimum capacity of your kettle – most have a minimum level clearly marked and any with 300ml or less are the ones to look out for.

Matching toaster

For a co-ordinated kitchen, look for a kettle that has a matching toaster. Most do and they can often be bought separately, coming in a range of styles, colours and prices.

Other kettle features to consider

It's also worth taking a moment to consider which design details and features are most important to you. You may take them for granted, but they can make all the difference when it comes to ease of use. Here are a few things you may want to prioritise.

Water level indicator

Being able to see the water marker is crucial if you want to be precise with the amount of water you’re boiling. Most kettles have this clearly visible on the exterior, but some are more awkwardly placed behind the handle.

To avoid having a kettle that’s too heavy when full, look for a model that weighs no more than one kilogram when empty. This is because for every millilitre of water you add to your kettle, you add an extra gram of weight, which can add up quickly!

It's also worth checking the position and shape of the handle, which can affect the balance when pouring and filling. Some handles have a soft, rubberised area to make it more comfortable.

If you’re looking for the best kettle for hard water, make sure the one you buy has a removable, washable anti-scale water filter. These sit at the base of the spout and collect pieces of limescale from the water to stop them being poured into your drink. They also stop scum forming on the surface.

Boil dry protection

This feature will make your kettle last longer as it automatically switches off if there isn't enough water inside, reducing the risk of it burning dry and causing damage. It’s also important to check the water gauge to make sure your kettle hasn’t been overfilled – risking it boiling over and becoming a safety hazard.

With some kettles, the outer casing gets extremely hot – this is worth thinking about if you have little ones in your kitchen. Often, those with a brushed stainless steel exterior reach hotter temperatures than other materials, while kettles with an auto shut-off feature will automatically stop when water begins to boil or if the kettle is lifted from its base.

Energy efficiency

If you’re looking for a greener kettle, keep an eye out for "quick boil", "one cup" or eco-friendly models. These can boil a cup's worth of water in less than a minute and use up to 50% less energy. Kettles with auto shut-off features also limit electricity wastage.

Hi friends! There are some things that we wished we had brought with us when we left London for our family full time travel adventure. A travel kettle is definitely one of those things- in fact it’s the one thing I would have packed given a second chance as well as a better travel stroller and more mess-free travel toys .

As budget travellers we often stay in guesthouses or cheap hotels that don’t come with a kettle in the room. After a long, sticky journey, when your tired legs collapse onto the fresh white bedsheets (or, y’know, kinda old faded bedsheets) there is nothing that revives you like a hot cup of tea or coffee.

Choosing a travel kettle or a car kettle can be a bit of a roulette; there are a few features to think about such as capacity, size and weight, and voltage, so we have put together a guide on the best travel kettle for different travellers’ needs. In my opinion these travel kettles are superior to Tesco travel kettles, Wilko travel kettles and Asda travel kettles for the reasons listed below (plus free delivery!). I hope this is helpful- wouldn’t want to get myself into hot water here, (bah-dum-dum-tssh!)

Best for no-space-in-the-bag travellers (collapsible kettle!):

I am in love with this thing. If you are backpacking or travelling with minimal luggage, this kettle is ideal as it collapses down into a 16 x 14 x 13 cm package. Collapsible kettles for gas stoves/camping have been around for a while but there are few electric ones that aren’t flimsy- this is the best on the UK market. I present to you your itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-greeny-tea-making-machiney. (It also comes in a lovely blue).

Best as a complete set (spoons ‘n’ all)

This Lakeland 0.5 litre travel kettle comes with cups, a divided container plus spoons and is a no-risk purchase as Lakeland offers a whopping three year guarantee. That’s time to drink a lot of coffee. The divided container is super handy for carrying sugar/hot chocolate powder/ loose leaf tea and the spoons and beakers mean you won’t have to wander down to reception in your pyjamas begging for a mug (been there, done that). The set comes in a handy drawstring bag and weighs 1kg altogether, taking up just 12 x 17 x 17 cm of case space.

Best travel kettle for fashionistas (kettle AND STEAMER!)

Ok I’m seriously impressed. It is pretty frustrating carefully packing all your clothes into your cases/bags and then finding them crumpled and creased at your destination. The Bokeh kettle & steamer will help you relax by providing a delicious cuppa AND getting those pesky creases out of your clothes (it can steam continuously for 25 minutes!). Refreshed and looking fabulous, what more could you want? You also save a huge £30 on the usual list price- this kettle is seriously good quality.

Best Travel Kettle for solo travellers

If you want one cup of hot water, this immersion heater is perfect as a caffeine-providing travel companion. Simply pop the element into the cup (provided with the element) and wait a couple of minutes for the water to heat up. The pack it into its case and be on your way. Quick, easy and no mess!

Best Travel Kettle for road trippers

A car kettle? A stylish car kettle? My life is complete. With a 280ml capacity and weighing just 680g, this car kettle works by connecting to the cigarette lighter socket and will have boiling water ready for you in no time. This car kettle is definitely the best travel kettle for road-trippers and comes with a car holder and clips to ensure safety and convenience during use and storage.

Best For A Travel Couple

This VonShef travel kettle (with 2 cups) is extremely high quality for its price, making it great value for a travelling couple It has an auto cut-off switch to minimise the risk of boiling dry, a clip to keep the cord tidy, and a compact 0.5 litre capacity. It weighs a tiny 0.57kg and is perfect for backpacking, camping or road trips.

Our top money-saving travel tips and resources

For flights , it has to be Skyscanner . We’ve found flights from London to Singapore for £198 and European flights for under £20. There’s no other site that we’ve found to be as thorough at pulling up all the rock-bottom priced flights!

For hotels , Hotels Combined is our go-to; it used to be Booking.com but Hotels Combined actually searches several search engines including booking.com, so it’s much more efficient and better at getting the best deals.

For travel backpacks , Pacsafe security bags and the like we recommend eBay . We save a ton by purchasing two of our Osprey backpacks from eBay , they were hardly used and we didn’t mind that they didn’t look brand new- they’re only going to get dusty anyway! There are also brand-new bags/cases on eBay from discount retailers so it’s definitely worth a look.

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

• - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
• - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
• - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
• - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
• - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
• - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

• - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
• - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
• - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
• - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef). 

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it. 

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it. 

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash. 

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb. 

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think? 

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade. 

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2. 

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
