How to Get a Visa for Myanmar: The Complete Guide

How to get a visa for Myanmar

Do you need help to get your visa for Myanmar? Click here to see the agencies that we recommend!

If you’re planning a trip to Myanmar , remember to find out about visa requirements. In fact, unlike other countries in Southeast Asia (where for brief stays you won’t need a visa at times), if you’re planning a stay, whether it be for work or tourism, in ex Burma you’ll need to apply for a visa ahead of time.

Only with a passport from one of the eight nearby countries, ( which you’ll find on this page ), can you freely enter the country for 14 or 30 days, without needing to apply for a visa.

What is required for a Burmese visa?

As I said, Myanmar is the only country in Southeast Asia to require a mandatory visa as soon as you enter. This is also due to the recent opening of the country to tourism, late compared to the others, which are already ahead in the “Westernization” process.

Online procedure for getting a visa for Myanmar

In this section of the article I will explain in detail the online procedure, where you can apply for two types of visas. In the event you have to go to the Embassy, the procedure is similar (but in this case you can apply for all types of visas).

There are numerous accredited agencies for issuing a computerized visa, but I invite you to use the official site of the government of Myanmar , immigration section, to be more secure and avoid running into scams.

Types of visas obtainable online and the necessary requirements

Whatever the reason for you trip, the first thing you need is to have a regular passport valid for at least 6 months. Once you get your visa, it will last for three months.

There are two types of visas available online: tourist and business.

Tourist Visa

A tourist visa costs 50 Dollars and allows you to stay in the country for a maximum of 28 days. So if you arrive on a Thursday, your visa will last until the fourth Thursday.

This is the type of visa suitable for those who intend to stay in Myanmar for a few weeks, usually on vacation.

You’ll be required to enter your nationality and choose your entry checkpoint, your personal information as indicated in your passport, as well as the address of where you will stay in the country ( hostel, hotel, guest house, inn, resort ).

While filling out the online form you’ll have to provide a recent passport photo in digital format 38cm x 48cm  (you can use the “resize” function directly on the site), while on the last page you’ll have to enter your credit card information to approve payment.

Business Visa

For this type of visa, besides your personal information you’ll be ask to insert an invitation letter from a local company in the country with whom you wish to collaborate (NGO’s are not accepted).

In the first part of the computerized application you’ll have to enter the name and contact information of the company, the reason for your visit, the type of work and other basic information to justify a visa for doing business in Myanmar. Without a letter you absolutely cannot apply for an e-visa and enter Myanmar.

This is the only legal way to work in the country, whether it be for paid or volunteer work.

Specific types of visas (to apply for at the Embassy) or re-entry

There is next another series of entrance visas that you can apply for at an Embassy, and three re-entry visas to apply for directly onsite.

Special visas

There are 8 types of visas in this category: social visa, religious visa, study visa, journalism visa, private flight crew visa, seminar/conference/research visa and transit visa.

The religious and study visas last for 70 days while all the others, like the tourist visa, have a length of 28 days.

Take note that the three visas for: seminars, private flight crews and 24 hour transit can be issued directly upon arrival at the international airports of Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Tarv.

Re-entry visas

If you need a visa to extend your stay, you can go right to the Residence Permit Section of the Office for Foreign Citizen Affairs at number 122 Pansodan Street, in Yangon, to apply for a special re-entry visa for the country.

How long does it take to get a Burmese visa?

The necessary timetable for the issuing procedure is about 3 business days, so rather short.

If you don’t receive an approval notice in the next few days, you can just check the application status just by entering the passport number or request number.

When you receive your electronic visa via email, you just need to print it and present it upon arrival at the border of Myanmar – either land or air according to what you put on your application.

The electronic visa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue, and it’s important to apply for it no more than 60 days before the date of your arrival.

When the 90 day visa expires without your having already used it, it becomes unusable and you’ll have to apply for another. If instead you decide to prolong your stay for another 30 days, you’ll have to go to the appropriate office right onsite.

How much does a visa for Myanmar cost?

The cost depends on the type of visa you apply for. The cheapest is the tourist visa for 28 days, which costs 40 USD.

Where can I apply for a visa?

You can apply for a visa online, (as I explained above) or directly at the Embassy or Consulate nearer to your place of residence. In this last case, however, the procedure is a little longer, and the documents to attach are different. So I recommend that you follow the computerized procedure and save the trouble and energy for your trip, unless you need a special visa.

What are the required documents?

To apply for a visa you must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months and have free pages to attach a visa and entry and exit stamps.

Moreover, if you choose the consular or embassy option, you’ll also have to fill out a form, different than the visa application.

Besides these documents, once your visa is approved you’ll be required to show proof of financial self-sufficiency capable of covering your entire stay in the country.

In addition, you’ll also be required to show a departure ticket out of the country (air ticket or another proof) within the days you applied for.

What happens if I stay in Myanmar after my visa expires?

Staying in the country with an expired visa is punished with heavy sanctions. I recommend that you respect this marvelous people and the rules imposed by their institutions.

There aren’t many family-run operations compared to other countries in Southeast Asia where there are innumerable guesthouses, so you’ll need to look for an appropriate registered option, even just to put it on your visa application. This is because the government prohibits the population from mixing excessively with tourists.

Ex Burma drags behind it a legacy of closure to tourism and the world that lasted more than seventy years. But this is another story of which I’ll tell you about in another article.

Visa Requirements for Myanmar

china visit visa for myanmar

Despite the challenges of dealing with military bureaucracy, Myanmar , formerly known as Burma, can be an exciting and beautiful place to visit. Yet, Myanmar is one of the countries where you must have a visa arranged before arrival, otherwise, you'll be denied entry and put right back on a plane out.

There are some neighboring countries, such as Vietnam and Singapore, that do not require a visa for a short visit to Myanmar and others like Australia, China, and New Zealand (as well a handful of European countries) that also have the privilege of being able to obtain a visa on arrival. Despite being technically on the list for visa on arrival, the U.S. State Department advises against showing up without a prearranged visa. Instead, U.S. citizens can apply for a visa online before they enter Myanmar for either business or tourism. Or, if you require a longer stay, you could apply for another kind of visa that suits your circumstances—but these have to be applied for by mail or in person.

If you are applying for an eVisa, you will only be able to enter Myanmar through a limited number of ports, which includes the three largest airports (Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw, and Mandalay International Airport) and some land borders with Thailand and India. You must print out a copy of your eVisa approval and be ready to show it when you arrive in Myanmar.

U.S. citizens can apply for other visas with one of the three Myanmar diplomatic missions (Washington DC, New York, or Los Angeles) or mail in their application. Along with your application, you will need to mail in your original passport, two standard-size color photographs of your face against a white background, a copy of your flight itinerary or a letter from your tour operator, a prepaid self-addressed envelope, and your application fee paid by cashier's check or money order. The visa application fee is non-refundable, so make sure that your information is entered correctly the first time and that your photo meets the specifications.

eVisa For Tourism

For the casual traveler, a tourism eVisa is the easiest way to get into Myanmar, but you will only be allowed to stay in the country for up to 28 days. If for some reason you can't sort out your Myanmar visa online, you can still apply the "old fashioned" way by either visiting the embassy or mailing your passport, visa application, and money order to the embassy for processing.

Visa Fees and Application

The eVisa application process is fast and easy, but be sure to have your travel documents and credit card on hand before you start the process.

  • You can simply fill out your application on the government website , submit a color photograph, and pay a $50 application fee.
  • Your visa should be approved within three days, but if you need it even faster, you can pay for the express service, which only costs $6 more and promises that your application will be processed within 24 hours.

eVisa For Business

If you are traveling to Myanmar for business, you'll apply for a business visa using the same government website, but you will also need to submit your letter of invitation from the company you are doing business with and a copy of that company's business registration. This visa comes with a higher application fee of $70, but you will be able to enjoy a longer stay in Myanmar for up to 70 days.

Meditation Visa

If you intend to travel to Myanmar to participate in a meditation retreat for longer than the 28 days, you can apply for a meditation visa , which will allow you to stay in Myanmar for up to 70 days. When you submit your application, you will also need to include a letter to the ambassador, the original copy of the sponsor letter from the meditation center you'll be attending. The fee for this visa is $50 and it is valid for three months from the date of issuance.

Education Visa

An Education Visa will allow you to stay in Myanmar for up to 90 days provided that you are either lecturing or enrolled in a course or program at a university in Myanmar. With your application , you will need to submit a $50 fee, plus a completed work history form, a recommendation from the university you plan to attend, and a copy of the school's registration.

Employment Visa

An Employment Visa will grant you a 70-day stay in Myanmar, but this is extendable. When you apply , you'll need to fill out a work history form and provide an invitation letter of employment from registered Myanmar company, a copy of that company's registration, a copy of the receipts certifying that tax payment will be imposed, and the application fee of $50.

Transit Visa

If you have a short layover in Myanmar, but don't want to pay full price for an eVisa to leave the airport, you can apply for a transit visa, which is valid for 24 hours and costs only $20. However, this visa is not as convenient to apply for as the eVisa and you will need to submit your passport and application by mail , in addition to a copy of your onward ticket and a completed work history form.

Visa Overstays

Most visas are valid for three months after being issued, but that doesn't mean you have to travel within those three months. As long as you enter the country before the three months are up, you will be allowed to stay for the full amount of time your visa dictates.

If you overstay your visa, you will have to pay $3 for every extra day for up to 30 days. After 30 days, the fine increases to $5 per day. You'll be charged this fine when you leave Myanmar, typically at the Airport Immigration Office. Although a few tourists do choose to overstay their visa by a few days, doing so on a long-term basis has some serious downsides. For one, you won't be able to fly domestically within Myanmar, and hotels and bus lines are required by law to deny service if your visa is expired. You may meet people who choose to take this risk, especially since the fine is so low, and overstaying your visa won't hinder your ability to enter Myanmar in the future but generally, it is not a good idea if you want to avoid any attention from law enforcement.

Extending Your Visa

It's not possible to extend a Transit or Tourism Visa, but you can extend a Business, Meditation, Education, or Employment Visa by contacting the embassy directly. If you are requesting an extension for a Business Visa, you will also need to provide a recommendation letter.

Myanmar junta’s top internal affairs official visits China

Lt.-gen. yar pyae may receive an award for cooperating with china in arresting and prosecuting myanmar officials suspected of involvement in international cybercrime operations.

The military council’s home affairs minister Lt.-Gen. Yar Pyae travelled to Beijing on Wednesday to discuss bilateral law enforcement and security cooperation with Chinese public security minister Wang Xiaohong, regime-controlled news outlets said.

The visit, which is scheduled to last five days, comes after a previous meeting between Yar Pyae and China’s ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai in Naypyitaw on April 11, at which the two officials discussed criminal online gambling and scam operations based in Myanmar and the necessary means to combat them.

According to junta-run media, Chinese authorities may be planning to give an award to Yar Pyae recognising his role in fighting international cybercrime operations to which hundreds of Chinese nationals—as well as citizens of other countries neighbouring Myanmar—have fallen victim.

VIENTIANE (The Nation Thailand/ANN): The 5th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge being built across the Mekong River will open in November. The new border crossing point will be the gateway to Bolikhamsai district in Laos, and is expected to facilitate the economy, tourism and trade between Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China.

The bridge will connect Thailand’s Bueng Kan province with Paksam in Laos. The Cabinet gave its approval to the Department of Highways under the Transport Ministry to start construction in 2012. On June 14, 2019 both countries signed an agreement on co-construction at Bueng Kan province

Nearly 80 per cent of the construction work has been finished and the Friendship Bridge project is expected to be completed by November, the ministry said.

The opening of the bridge is expected to not only boost cross-border trade, investment and tourism between both countries, but also facilitate the export of Thai goods to southern China.

The bridge is 16.18 kilometres long — 12.13km on the Thai side long and 2.86km on the Lao side. The bridge begins on the intersection of highway No. 222 in Bueng Kan district, Bueng Kan province and terminates at the intersection of road 13 in Paksan, Bolikhamsai district in Laos.

The highway has four lanes, each lane 3.50 metres wide with a 2.50-metre shoulder in a 60-metre road zone. The extradosed prestressed concrete bridge has two traffic lanes and a shoulder and sidewalk with an 810-metre span across the Mekong River. There are border control facilities on both sides and a traffic switch point on the Lao side.

Thailand has invested 3.930 billion baht on the bridge — 2.553 million baht for construction and 77 million baht for construction control. - The Nation Thailand/ANN
