Greenwich Market is a wonderful place to explore at any time of year. It’s home to 120 stalls selling all sorts of goods, from food, antiques, and artwork to handicrafts, fashion, and beauty products. Throughout December, the market dedicates one night each week to the festive season and hosts one of the most spectacular Christmas markets in London.

Thanks to its location, away from the center of the city, Greenwich Christmas Market is one of the quieter and more low-key markets on this list. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. On the contrary, this market is the perfect place to go if you want to support local creators and get into the festive spirit without having to deal with lines and crowds.

Best Christmas Markets in London for Shopping: Greenwich Christmas Market

The market is located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is pretty special on its own. But decorate it with oversized snowmen, full wreaths, tall trees, twinkling lights, and red ribbons, and the market transforms itself into an excellent place to shop for stocking fillers or grab something festive to eat.

Buy a cup of steaming mulled wine and sip as you browse through stalls selling everything from quirky photographs and scented candles to vegan brownies and spicy hot sauce.

12. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Festive Christmas Markets in London: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

The biggest and most popular Christmas market in London is easily the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland . This giant market covers almost all of Hyde Park and is bursting with so many things to see and do that you’ll want to return again and again!

The huge ice skating rink is one of our favorite parts of Winter Wonderland. It’s the biggest one in the UK and is just as good for a fun family day out as it is for a romantic experience. If you’re traveling with your children, you’ll love the mini penguins kids can use to help them skate. Or, if you’re visiting as a couple, you’ll find the twinkling lights and live music add an intimate atmosphere.

Must Visit London Christmas Markets: Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

When you’re in the mood for something to eat, head to the Bavarian Village, where you’ll find typical wooden huts dishing up all kinds of warming German eats. If you feel like something else, there are plenty of other stalls dishing up international street eats.

There’s a number of great spots to grab a drink. We recommend buying some hot cocoa or sparkling prosecco and enjoying it in the Carousel Bar. It gently spins around while you drink!

With amazing circus shows, a giant observation wheel, a magical ice kingdom, a fun-filled Santa Land, and an ice slide, you’ll never be stuck for what to do here.

And there you have it! These are our picks for the best Christmas markets in London. Which ones are you going to visit?

It’s also one of the best-placed markets for sightseeing in London, so once you’re done with your retail therapy, you can take a walk-up and over Tower Bridge.

In 2022, Christmas By the River offered a whole host of festive events, tastings, and workshops alongside the market stalls, making it an entertainment fest for the whole family. Nearby film screenings showing the likes of Elf and Home Alone also do an excellent job of spreading festive cheer.

Christmasy Greenwich Market

Greenwich Market in London

Greenwich Market is not normally a Christmas market , it is rather a traditional London market that guarantees a very special visit during the Christmas season.

Greenwich Market is generally one of the most beautiful markets in the city and less touristy than other more centrally located markets.

During the holidays, you’ll find everything you need to decorate your domicile for Christmas, as well as hot chocolate and mulled wine . The most festive months of the year are definitely a good time to explore Greenwich!

You (or maybe your kids) can meet Santa in his grotto, and the Christmas Late Markets on the three Advent days offer extra festive stalls with shopping opportunities.

The Best Christmas Markets in London 2023

The Best Christmas Markets in London 2023

Love This? Save and Share!

Looking for the best Christmas Markets in London? Don’t miss these fabulously festive affairs – guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Red alert. It’s that time of the year folks. You know, when we crack out the mulled wine, tuck into the mince pies and start our transformation into our very best festive selves.

Visiting a good Christmas market is an integral part of this process. Luckily London just so happens to be packed with options for you to choose from – and this year the markets are back and better than ever.

We’ve been very quick to get into all the Christmassy feels this year (we might have already scoffed a pack of mince pies). The result? We’re totally festive AF now. Yo ho ho ho!

Time for you to do the same? Here are the best Christmas markets in London for your festive calendar.

The Best Christmas Markets in London

2nd + 3rd December

Big up to the south London Christmas crew who will be sprinkling the Christmas vibes around like confetti at Pexmas , Copeland Park’s Christmas market in Peckham .

They lay down a delightful weekend affair with stands selling all sorts of artisan trinkets made by people in the community.

Of course, no Christmas market would be complete without a spread of delicious grub and some warming drinks so they’ve got those too.

Not feeling like leaving the house in the December cold? Shop online from the comfort of your sofa and have the market come to you.

Unfortunately that option doesn’t extend to the glühwein.

Borough Market

Open daily until 24th December

Borough Market at Christmas

Sure, Borough Market is a year-round affair but they totally ramp up the pace at Christmas. The already beautiful setting of the market is decked out with Christmas lights and decorations – it’s just gorgeous.

Food is the name of the game here (well, food and drink – even better), so we advise that you go with a hungry stomach, ready to fill it with delicious treats (and if you’re anything like us, cup after cup of mulled wine to boot).

In charge of the festive table this year? The market is the perfect place to stock up on high-quality ingredients for your Christmas feast too.

Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

Still TBA, but usually late November – January

Another Central London tourist trap, but if you want your market to be both merry and major, this is perhaps the one for you.

They’ve got all the trappings when it comes to food, drink and little gifty trinkets, as well as prime views of the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree – the only object in the area that would ever try and be as tall as Nelson’s Column. It hasn’t managed yet.

That’s also the tree that gets donated annually from Norway in a festive tradition that stretches right back to 1947.

Greenwich Christmas Market

Open daily until 25th December

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Greenwich Market (@greenwichmarket)

Another year-round market that takes a decidedly festive turn in December, Greenwich Christmas Market turns the world heritage neighbourhood of Greenwich listed building into a Christmas treasure trove.

With more than 150 stalls touting pretty much every kind of Christmas gift imaginable it’s the perfect place to pick up a few stocking fillers or that extra-special gift or two.

Want to avoid the weekend crowds? The Wednesday night lates are a much more laid-back and peaceful affair.

Winter by the River, London Bridge

14th November 2023 – 1st January 2023

Hays Galleria at Christmas

The twinkling fairy lights, wooden cabins and general feeling of festive cheer draw punters to London’s fabulous Christmas by the River .

This is hands down one of the best Christmas markets in London when it comes to location – nestled near Tower Bridge , the Gherkin and with a view of the Tower of London, it’s the perfect London backdrop to glug down the gluhwein and get into the festive season groove.

Pssst… You might also want to head to Hays Galleria nearby. Another ultra-dreamy market awaits.

Fulham Palace Christmas Fair

2nd + 3rd December

East facade of Fulham Palace

This Christmas market is a bit of a flash in the pan, but definitely worth hitting. They’ll be squeezing a bit of everything into the short space of time with food, drinks and gift ideas.

What’s different then? Well, they only get the carol singers in too. And some fair-ground rides. Oh yeah, and a bunch of stuff for the kids like festive storytelling and face painting.

Plus there’s the fact that it’s set in the grounds of a gorgeous inner-city palace with 1,300 years of history. Can’t argue with that.

For more information and tickets, head to their website, here

Christmas Under the Canopy at King’s Cross

Throughout November and December

King's Cross Christmas Club Curling

The Christmas Canopy Market only runs throughout November and December. If you’re looking for a spot to mooch around, browsing items made by some of London’s best independent designers and makers – this is your jam.

From specialty handmade chocolate bars to vinyl LPs, handmade jewellery and cool art: it’s a collection of some of the funkiest Christmas gifts you will find in the capital.

This year, each weekend sees a different theme taking over the market, from vegan weekend to a Mexican fiesta. Deck the halls!

Hackney Christmas Market

Dates TBA

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bohemia Place Market (@bohemiaplacemarkets)

Bring lots of empty bags to stock up on the goodies at Hackney’s stellar Bohemia Place Market.

It’s a real all-rounder, with street food (including some brilliant vegan options), Christmas decorations, cool gifts and (just as importantly) lashings of mulled wine and festive cocktails. Wrap up warm and get festive.

They’ve not announced the dates for 2023

Covent Garden

Until the 25th December

Covent Garden Christmas

Covent Garden really ramps things up in the run-up to the big day. There’ll be pop-up stands, lights, trees and all the usual goodies.

Their Winter Warmer Festival is also a lovely way to kick the festive period off. It runs from the 7th – 26th November and sees businesses in the area offering mulled wine and takes on other classic winter warming drinks.

They’ll have all the traditional mulled stuff, plus creative twists on hot wines including mulled rosé, spiced punch, hot apple cider, sake and mocktails. Count us in.

Finnish Church Christmas Market

24th November – 11th December

What could be more festive than a Christmas Market in the theme of the nation that Santa calls home?

The folks at the Finnish Church probably know they’ve got a good thing going with their market. The food here leans in the direction of the Church’s country. Expect plenty of spelt breads, smoked salmon and cinnamon buns alongside the usual classics.

The gifts section include beautiful hand-crafted Finnish toys and artisan goods that have found their way under our Christmas trees on more than one occasion.

All of the above, in our minds, makes this one of the best Christmas markets in London.

Southbank Centre Winter Festival

Until 7th January

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Southbank Centre (@southbankcentre)

Nothing says Christmas quite like taking a stroll along the Southbank and admiring Christmas lights , right?

You’re not short of beautiful walks in London , but when the lights go up and the air turns icy, this spot becomes a winter utopia – and you won’t have to spend your time elbowing your way through tourists.

Southbank Centre’s highly anticipated Winter Festival returns in 2023 with a bang – complete with rustic food and drink stalls, magical performances, and an outdoor winter light show (our fav!).

If you fancy splurging, head to Jimmy’s Lodge for a meal in a cosy snowglobe overlooking the water – or just scoff street food as you peruse. Either way, you’re golden.

Winter Wonderland

17th November – 1st January

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Winter Wonderland (@hydeparkwinterwonderland)

Winter Wonderland is a guilty pleasure – food prices are pretty high and the market is usually packed (pre-rona), and yet, it’s still so wonderful. When it comes to London Christmas markets, it truly doesn’t feel like Christmas without at least one trip here each year.

Things are a little different this year and you’ll need to book a £5 slot to enter, but given that it’s easily one of the most magical places in London at Christmas, we think it’s well worth it.

If you’re looking for tasty food, mulled wine to boot, market stalls, and even a ride or three, Winter Wonderland has got it all.

If you want an ultimate treat, book yourself a slot at the ice bar and sip cocktails inside a 70s-themed mini ice palace.

Paternoster Square

Millennium Bridge

It may be on the smaller side, but Paternoster Square’s Christmas market  is mighty AF.

Set against the backdrop of the iconic St Pauls, expect tasty street food, plenty of warm bevvies, and views for days. This is a classic and cosy winter market not to be missed.

Kingston Christmas Market

16th November – 31st December

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kingston Christmas Market (@kingstonchristmasmarket)

Hauling yourself around Central London doesn’t sound too appealing? Head to Kingston Christmas Market and prepare to be transported straight to the heart of Bavaria with its traditional wooden chalet offering.

From hefty bratwurst and hog roast to Glühwein, come hungry – and thirsty – and prepare to chomp your way around the market.

You’ll also be able to head to the Pyramid Stage (who needs Glastonbury?) for plenty of live music throughout the week.

Festive Flea at Vinegar Yard

Dates and times tbc

Another year-round market that gets a delightfully festive makeover in December.

Flea at Vinegar Yard is ridiculously popular with locals as it’s filled with vintage treasures and curated items – FYI it’s a great place to pick up some unique gifts.

Add to this takeaway mulled wine and sparkling lights and you’ve got yourself one of London’s best Christmas markets sans repetitive stalls and ridiculous prices.

Christmas Independent Ceramics Market

10th December

If you fancy something a bit different for a market you could hit this little affair at Rich Mix, Shoreditch .

They’ve got over a hundred sellers flogging beautiful ceramic wares. The vendors vary from amateurs and small-business types to well-established ceramicists.

No doubt this bonanza will be filled to the brim with very personalised gift ideas. They’ve also got the usual array of winter-warmer food and drink. We’re expecting it to be served in the most stylish of hand-made dishes and cups. Only one way to find out.

Leicester Square

8th November – 7th January

Leicester Square Christmas Market

A word of warning: Visiting the Christmas market in Leicester Square is not for the faint-hearted.

That said, there’s nothing quite like elbowing your way through a-bit-too-merry tourists and dodging last-minute shoppers during the festive season. It really is one of the best Christmas markets London has to offer.

You’ve got the usual lineup of winter chalets serving up tasty snacks and gifts, as well as the iconic Spiegeltent, where you’ll be able to catch La Clique, an ultra-fun circus/cabaret bonanza that truly delights.

This London Christmas market is also surrounded by plenty of shops, so if you just so happen to need to pick up a last-minute gift yourself, you can do so before you head home.

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre

1st -3rd + 8th – 10th December

Hampton Court Palace

One of London’s most iconic palaces holds a festive market that you’ll want on your radar. Not only that but they also pull out all the stops in creating a winter wonderland that is as magical as it is bountiful. We’re talking, of course, about Hampton Court Palace’s Festive Fayre.

It’s a feast of things to eat that’s spread over two weekends in December. We always do our best to make it down and expand out beltlines by a few notches. You’ll find an eclectic array of food coming from all around the world, plus all the classics you’d expect from a self-respecting Christmas fair: bratwurst and mulled wine in abundance.

The feasting takes on an even more special shade when you realise that Hampton Court Palace was once the home of Henry VIII – the fattest king of England.

Christmas at Kew

15th November – 7th January

Christmas at Kew

Another iconic London location to really pull out all the stops around Christmas time is Kew Gardens. They do a Christmas Market that’s quite unlike anything else in London, and should absolutely be one for any eager marketgoer to consider.

Kew is already a pretty lovely place to walk around, but at this time of year they turn their stunning greenhouses into a winter trail, lighting up a pathway with an incredible display of Christmas lights. Their market is then built around this, so that while you wander the pathways of the botanical gardens, you’ll stumble across christmas market stands.

You pick up your mulled wine at one, then wend your way on to another stand to pick up a bit of food, then another for some gifts, all under a gorgeous canopy of light.

  • King’s Cross Christmas Market
  • Greenwich Christmas Market

1. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: 17th November to 1st January
  • Where: 15 Clarendon St, Hyde SK14 2EL
  • Must try: Pull on your skates and hit the ice rink – it’s the biggest in the UK.

For a London Christmas market with all the bells and whistles, you can’t beat Winter Wonderland . This huge festive event is held in Hyde Park every year and has become the biggest – and arguably the best – Christmas market in the UK.

As well as hundreds of wooden chalets selling everything from seasonal treats to handmade gifts, there are heaps of other activities to enjoy. This includes kid-friendly rides, a huge Ferris wheel and a stage for live performances.

2. Covent Garden Christmas Market

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 3rd January
  • Where: Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD
  • Must try: Snap a photo in a restored 19th-century sleigh surrounded by leafy decorated fir trees.

This square’s historic setting and charming Victorian-era buildings make the perfect backdrop for a Christmas market. Covent Garden Market is one of the longest-running festive fairs in London and an absolute must-see.

The square is usually decorated with hundreds of strings of lights and there are plenty of shopping opportunities to be had. Browse stalls selling handmade crafts or venture into the square’s high-end shops to discover special seasonal treats (and sometimes a few discounts).

3. Southbank Centre Christmas Market

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: November 2nd to 26th December
  • Where: Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX
  • Must try: Enjoy festive drinks in your very own igloo along the riverfront.

Combine a river stroll with some festive cheer at the Southbank Christmas Market. This is a personal favorite of mine and is particularly handy if you’re catching a show nearby at the National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe after.

Browse the wooden Alpine chalets selling all kinds of wonderful gifts. There’s also plenty of mouth-watering food to buy – think German bratwurst, gourmet burgers, creamy fudge and festive mince pies.

4. Christmas by the River

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: TBC
  • Where: London Bridge, Riverside, London SE1 2DB
  • Must try: Grab a cup of mulled wine and sip it slowly as you gaze out at London’s skyline.

London Bridge’s Christmas market never fails to disappoint. That’s partly due to its amazing location right next to two of London’s most iconic sights: the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

This market is on the smaller side but still packs a punch with its Christmassy treats and charming arts and crafts.

5. King’s Cross Christmas Markets

christmas markets to visit in london

  • Where: various venues around King’s Cross station, Euston Road, London N1 9AL
  • Must try: Seek out the 47ft Norddman fir tree adorned with hundreds of lights and cool ski-themed decorations.

Whether you’re catching a train from King’s Cross or not, the area’s markets are well worth stopping by.

There are typically several pop-up events happening throughout the festive season, with many of the events centered around Coal Drops Yard.

Each market sells a fantastic range of unique gifts, from artisan food and quirky homeware to cool independent fashion items.

6. Greenwich Christmas Market

christmas markets to visit in london

  • Where: Greenwich Market, London SE10 9HZ
  • Must try: Grab a festive drink and wander Greenwich’s pretty streets which are decked out in twinkling lights.

Get yourself down to historic Greenwich for its annual festive fair. The event takes place in the locally-loved Greenwich Market (which is open all year round).

The venue is decorated for the Advent period, while there are usually a few stalls outside along the riverfront, too.

Greenwich Christmas Market is well-known for its unique and crafty stalls, so prepare to pick up some amazing gifts.

7. Christmas at Borough Market

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 2nd January
  • Where: Borough Market, London SE1 9AL
  • Must try: Keep an eye on the market’s website for themed festive food evenings that will have you salivating.

Borough Market is a foodie haven throughout the year but it gets an awesome festive makeover in the winter months. Decorations are strung up between its arches, heaps of seasonal treats go on sale and there’s usually a busker or two singing Christmas tunes.

Spoiler alert: make sure you visit with an appetite. There are usually heaps of artisanal food from across the globe to purchase, from sweet delights like mince pies and stollen to award-winning cheeses.

8. Leicester Square Christmas Market

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: 8th November to 7th January
  • Where: Leicester Square, London WC2H 7LU
  • Must try: Grab tickets to one of the lively shows in the 1920s Spiegeltent.

At any other time of year, you’ll find Leicester Square full of tourists snapping photos or queuing up to enter the popular Marks and Spencers store. By early November, the square turns into a festive fairytale filled with wooden chalets and a huge Christmas tree.

It’s one of the best Christmas markets in London for those seeking a European vibe. Browse stalls selling bratwurst, gluhwein and other German delights.

Last year, there was even a Belgian-style Spiegeltent which hosted shows by the award-winning La Clique circus, cabaret and comedy troupe.

9. Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre

  • 2023 dates: 1st to 3rd December and 8th to 10th December
  • Where: Hampton Court Palace, Hampton Ct Way, East Molesey KT8 9AU
  • Must try: Head to the East Front bandstand for live music and other performances.

Few settings are more romantic than an actual royal palace! If you’re hoping to have a magical Christmas market experience with your other half, head to Hampton Court. The former home of Henry VIII is transformed into a winter wonderland for two weekends every December.

The event is hosted throughout the palace grounds and features tonnes of stalls selling sumptuous street food, artisan foodie gifts and handmade crafts.

Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre is a ticketed event, although it also includes entrance to the palace itself. Always wanted to explore its grand hallways and opulent chambers? This is your chance to see it all and simultaneously have an enchanting festive experience.

10. Paternoster Square Christmas Market

christmas markets to visit in london

  • Where: Paternoster Square, London EC4M 7DX
  • Must try: Cherish your visit by taking a photo in the market’s giant snow globe.

Picture tucking into a bag of hot roasted chestnuts with a view of the monumental St Paul’s Cathedral. That’s exactly what’s on offer at this small yet charming Christmas market in London’s Paternoster Square.

It plays host to a regular monthly food market throughout the year. However, in November and December, stalls offering plenty of Christmas cheer take its place.

As well as 20 or so cabins selling all sorts of lovely items, there’s a charming Christmas tree display in the heart of the square.

11. Christmas at Kew

  • 2023 dates: 15th November to 7th January
  • Where: Kew Gardens, Richmond TW9 3AB
  • Must try: Make a beeline for the Christmas Cathedral; a huge tunnel featuring dozens upon dozens of strings of fairy lights.

Lush plants, ethereal greenhouses and lots of sparkly lights await at this venue. Kew Gardens is a must-see in London, no matter the time of year. Come Christmas though, the venue is transformed into a festive paradise.

The event will be in its 11th year in 2023 – and it’s likely to be as awesome as 2022’s event. The main attraction of Christmas at Kew is the festive light trail which combines thousands of sparkling lights with music, fire displays and mesmerizing illuminations.

12. Spirit of Christmas Fair

christmas markets to visit in london

  • 2023 dates: 30th October to 5th November
  • Where: Olympia London, Hammersmith Rd, London W14 8UX
  • Must try: Learn how to make a Christmas wreath or how to expertly wrap gifts in a workshop.

Fancy getting into the festive mood a little early? Get your shopping done well ahead of time with a trip to the Spirit of Christmas Fair .

This three-day event takes place in late October/early November at Olympia London and it’s always a memorable experience. It’s ticketed (prices start at around $27) but worth paying for as you’ll have access to over 700 stalls from both independent and well-known brands.

If all that shopping starts to make you peckish, you’ll be spoilt for choice by delicious delicacies. Browse stalls selling festive delights or book a table at the Spirit of Christmas restaurant for an indulgent multi-course meal.

You’ll also have access to dozens of creative workshops, demonstrations and tastings, plus some incredible live music.

15 of the Best Christmas Markets in London to Visit in 2024

London’s Christmas markets are a treasure trove of festive delights, offering a charming array of handcrafted gifts, seasonal treats, and Christmas decorations. These bustling markets, nestled in some of London’s most iconic locations, create a merry atmosphere that invites both locals and tourists to experience the magic of the season.

Imagine this: The air is filled with the tempting aroma of warm mulled wine, the soft glow of fairy lights twinkle everywhere you look, and sounds of festive tunes blend in with the noise of people enjoying themselves.

Christmas markets in London are not just markets; they are vibrant hubs of holiday enchantment, where the spirit of the season comes to life. But here’s the twist – these magical moments are fleeting – so grab your chance to enjoy these markets while you can. In this article, I unveil the ultimate guide to London’s Christmas markets to help you make the most of the 2024 festive season.

Types of Christmas market

Opening dates and times, 1. hyde park winter wonderland, 2. southbank christmas market, 3. trafalgar square, 4. christmas by the river at london bridge city, 5. greenwich market, 6. covent garden, 7. leicester square christmas market, 8. borough market, 9. spitalfields market, 10. king’s cross, 11. st paul’s, 12. paternoster square, 13. kingston christmas market, 14. columbia road, 15. fleet street quarter, london christmas markets map.

There are two distinct types of Christmas market in London; pop-up and permanent.

Permanent markets open all year round, but become Christmas-themed towards the end of the year, with festive decorations, stalls and Christmas trees.

Pop-up markets consist of a number of temporary wooden huts selling gifts, food, drink and other items. Often there is a bar and eating area too. These are usually erected just for the Christmas season, so are usually in place from the middle of November. Some of these are operated by the same company, so some pop-up markets have similar stalls. You’ll often find the same items for sale in many of the pop-up markets, such as Christmas ornaments, food and other gifts.

Because most of these markets are very similar, don’t feel you’re missing out if you don’t visit them all – just pick one or two based on their location.

Most Christmas markets in London are free to visit – there is only one that you have to pay to enter, and that is Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park.

Most Christmas markets in London open in mid-November, and run until the end of the year.

The pop-up markets are generally open from late morning to night, 7 days a week – I’ll update each listing once opening dates and times are confirmed.

Christmas markets in London

Listed in no particular order, here are my favourite Christmas markets in London.

Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park is London’s largest Christmas attraction, and is located right in the middle of the famous Hyde Park. It’s much more than just a Christmas market though, and includes a number of other attractions and rides. There are roller coasters, ice sculptures, a giant wheel and even an ice bar. You can go ice skating at their ice rink, and even meet Santa at Santaland.

The Christmas market within Winter Wonderland is billed as one the largest in London, with more than 100 wooden cabins but actually it doesn’t seem as impressive as the stalls are spread out over the whole area. The Christmas market area itself has a lot less than 100 and while it lacks some of the variety that other markets have, it does have a lot of decent food stalls.

Festive snacks at Winter Wonderland

Entry to Winter Wonderland is free during selected off-peak times, but at busier times it will cost up to £7.50 per person to get into. If you want to enjoy any of the attractions or rides, these cost extra although you can save a bit by buying in advance online. If you spend £25 on extras you’ll get your entry for free. Full details of pricing can be found on the Winter Wonderland website [ link ].

If you just want to explore the market and don’t have any interest in any of the other attractions, then I’d recommend going for one of the off-peak times to get free entry. It also gets busy in the evenings and at weekends, so if you prefer a less crowded experience then I’d suggest going before 4pm on a weekday.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, Marble Arch, Victoria, Green Park. Please note that Hyde Park Corner and Marble Arch can get very busy during peak times, so it’s advisable to use alternative stations. Cost : Up to £7.50 per person (adult and child) to enter, plus additional fees for rides and attractions. Book online here .

This market is one of the smaller Christmas markets in London, but it is in a great location. Situated just to the east of the London Eye on the south bank of the Thames, you get fantastic views across the river towards the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben to the left, and St Paul’s Cathedral to the right.

Southbank Christmas Market

While it’s not the biggest market in London, it’s still worth a visit if you’re in the area and ideal to combine with a trip to the London Eye or London Aquarium. Wandering along the south bank is enjoyable at any time, but it is even more so on a chilly winter evening with a cup of warm mulled wine in your hands as you admire the view.

There’s a selection of chalets selling street food, drink and gifts, plus you can have a go at curling.

You can find out more in my in-depth review of the Southbank Christmas market .

Trafalgar Square at Christmas is best known for its famous Christmas tree, generously donated every year by Norway. However, did you know there is also a small Christmas market there too, nestling almost under the pine leaves, and in front of the National Gallery?

Trafalgar Square Christmas Market

There are around 35 stalls in total plus a large bar selling festive drinks. The stalls offer a good mixture of Christmas ornaments, gifts and food. It’s not quite the biggest or the best, but it’s still a decent size plus the location and view definitely makes it worth a visit.

While you’re in the area, there are plenty of other things to do too, including checking out some of London’s famous Christmas light displays , or even a Christmas carol concert at the nearby St Martin-in-the-Fields .

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : Charring Cross, Leicester Square Cost : Free

Another Christmas market on the south bank of the River Thames, this one is located between Tower Bridge and London Bridge, very close to London Bridge station. The wooden huts stretch from The Scoop, past HMS Belfast all the way up to Hays Galleria, and include the usual selection of gifts, ornaments and food stalls. There is also a seating area and bar, so you can enjoy a drink and bite to eat. There is a wide variety of food on offer, including German Bratwurst, Mexican nachos (I can highly recommend these) and mince pies.

Christmas by the River at London Bridge City

The location is fantastic, with views of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London just the other side of the river.

Christmas at London Bridge City

It can get quite busy in the evening, especially as the path narrows at certain points but overall, this market is well worth a visit. If you’re making a day of it, you could combine it with a visit to one of the nearby attractions like Tower Bridge , or even a boat trip along the Thames from one of the nearby piers.

You can find out more in my in-depth review of Christmas by the River .

One of London’s historic markets, Greenwich market sits very close to the Old Royal Naval College in South East London. It is a fairly small market in size, but is packed full of quality stalls selling arts, crafts and fashion items.

While here, you can also explore the historic maritime neighbourhood of Greenwich, illuminated in a festive light display. Nearby is also the ice rink at the historic Queen’s House, ideal for a bit of winter ice skating.

While easy to get to on the DLR, why not embrace Greenwich’s maritime history and take a river taxi there from one of the piers on central London.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich Cost : Free

Covent Garden is another permanent market that is open all year round, but transforms itself at Christmas.

It also features one of London’s famous Christmas trees, almost rivalling the nearby Trafalgar Square tree in size. Covered in decorations and Christmas lights, the market contains a mixture of small shops, restaurants and individual traders at the Apple Market.

Covent Garden Christmas Market

On the outer edge of the market, you can find a range of luxury boutiques as well as a large Apple store so there should be something here for everyone.

In the market piazza next to the tree, you can also usually find street performers doing their best to entertain you.

When you’ve finished exploring the delights of the market, there are plenty of things to do nearby – from a performance at the Royal Opera House, or a visit to the London Transport Museum. Or maybe even take a walk and explore some of London’s Christmas light displays , or pop in to the nearby Neal’s Yard.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : Covent Garden Cost : Free

This very centrally located market might be small, but it is still very much worth a visit. Sitting right in the middle of Leicester Square, unlike the other markets in London this one is fully enclosed and you may have to queue to get in. Despite the compact area, they do pack a decent number of stalls in although this does mean it can be quite crowded at busy times.

Also unlike most of the other Christmas markets in London, the stalls are beautifully decorated featuring wood carvings rather than just a plain wooden shed.

Leicester Square Christmas Market

One of the highlights is the award-winning cabaret spectacular La Clique, featuring circus, comedy and caberat. Find out more and book tickets on their website .

If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, then you’re not far away from the markets at Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. You’re also in a great location to wander up to Regent Street to admire the Christmas lights displays .

Borough Market is London’s oldest food market, and today is one of London’s biggest. Open all year round, there are over 100 stalls offering everything you could possibly want including cheese, freshly baked bread, olive oil, fresh fish and meat. You can enjoy a tasty snack at one of the many food stalls, or buy some special ingredients to cook at home.

During the festive season, it takes on a festive feel with Christmas decorations a-plenty, and is a great place to shop for food-related gifts. Usually closed on Mondays, it is open 7 days a week during December.

It’s just a few minutes walk from the market at London Bridge City, so it would be easy to visit both in one trip.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : London Bridge Cost : Free

Spitalfields is one of London’s biggest and best markets, open all year round. Over the Christmas period, it takes on a more festive feel, with the independent stall holders selling a variety of items that would make ideal Christmas gifts.

You can also enjoy eating from a large array of street food stalls, or shop in one of the stores located around the edge of the market.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : Liverpool Street Cost : Free

The area around King’s Cross is one of the best spots to enjoy the build up to Christmas in London. There’s a huge 50-foot Christmas tree in Coal Drops Yard, plus a pop-up cocktail bar set in an alpine wonderland with live DJ sets every Thursday. You can shop from the range of stores and pop-up market stalls in the Canopy Market, plus enjoy festive food and drink.

Find out more at the King’s Cross website .

This market, located next to St Paul’s Cathedral, is new for 2023, and an addition to the nearby market in Paternoster Square. This is actually the smallest Christmas market in London with just 9 stalls in 2023. The majority of these were food stalls, with just a couple selling gifts.

A small Christmas market outside St Paul's Cathedral

Due to the small number of stalls and lack of variety it isn’t really worth going out your way to visit, however if you’re near St Paul’s then it’s a nice festive addition to your visit.

Dates : 2024 dates TBC Times : TBC Nearest Tube : St Paul’s Cost : Free

Located in Paternoster Square just next to the iconic St Paul’s Cathedral, this is one of the smaller Christmas markets in London. If you’re working in the City or visiting St Paul’s it’s the perfect place to visit and get into the festive spirit.

A Christmas market in Paternoster Square

In 2023 there were just 12 stalls. Most of these were food stalls, with a handful of gift stalls. It’s also very close to the even smaller market outside St Paul’s Cathedral.

A small Christmas market in Paternoster Square near St Paul's Cathedral

There has been a market in Kingston upon Thames for hundreds of years, and the historical Ancient Market takes on a Christmas theme from the 16th of November.

As well as a number of stalls selling unique homemade gifts and festive food, there is also a ski-themed Alpine village. Here you can enjoy a game of curling, and enjoy the Christmas lights.

Columbia Road is more famous for its Sunday flower market, but on Wednesdays in the run up to Christmas, it takes on a more festive feel. The shops open late, offering handcrafted gifts and tasty festive treats. There is also carol singing to add to the festive feel.

And considering there were various restrictions last year, most people will want to make up for lost time and go all out in 2021.

The capital is the place to be for Christmassy activities, boasting everything from winter pop-ups to festive events – and, of course, let’s not forget about its incredible selection of Christmas markets.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourites to pitch up at.

Your guide to spending the holiday season in london..

Diego Ortiz

If you’ve never been to London during Christmas, here’s your chance to discover what a magical time the holiday season is in the British capital. First of all, the Christmas lights and decorations are epic. From the twinkly lights on Oxford Street and the elaborate decorations in Carnaby to the winter wonderland at Covent Garden and the dressed-up storefronts, the city sparkles at every turn. And then you have the Christmas markets and seasonal events popping up all across town, adding to the holiday cheer.

London packs in the crowds this time of year when locals and visitors alike drop in to shop, see the lights, and catch a holiday-themed show. Experience all the city has to offer amid the crisp winter air.

The best Christmas markets in London

Christmas markets in London typically start in early November, with some lasting through New Year’s. Finding a Christmas market in London isn’t hard at all—the actual challenge is in deciding which you should visit when the city is teeming with so many tempting choices.

Carnival rides at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

Southbank Centre Winter Market

When: November 3, 2023–December 26, 2023

The Southbank Centre facing the Thames is home to a year-long food market that turns into a Christmas carnival of sorts every holiday season. There’s a lot more to the market than the pop-up stands, though. With the beautiful lights strung above and a free exhibit of 10 lightworks, you get the unmistakable feeling that it’s really that time of year again.

Borough Market at Christmas

When: November 28, 2023–January 9, 2024

London’s famous Borough Market gets a Christmas makeover every year, when it’s decked out in twinkly lights, tinsel, and wreaths. The stalls add seasonal goodies to their regular items, offering everything from mulled wine, mince pies, and Christmas cakes to all sorts of gifts. Be sure to stop by earlier in the day, as lines for food stalls can start to wind as the day goes on, according to reviewers.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

When: November 17, 2023–January 1, 2023

Hyde Park turns into a huge fun fair and festival site where the Christmas markets are among many of the attractions. You’ll probably need more than a day to cover it all. There are countless rides, an ice skating rink (said to be the biggest in the U.K.), theatre shows, an ice kingdom, and plenty of food and drinks. Just note that you'll have to book tickets to Winter Wonderland in advance.

The best Christmas lights and decorations in London

Wandering around London’s famous shopping districts like Carnaby Street , Oxford Street , or Regent Street during the holidays can put even the gloomiest of souls in a festive mood. If you can’t get enough of twinkly lights and elaborate decorations, here are more places you can check out:

Christmas tree at Covent Garden at night

Covent Garden

When : November 7, 2023–January 7, 2024

Visit Covent Garden for some (or a lot of) Christmas shopping, but honestly, the visuals are the real attractions here. Locals and tourists alike flock to the Covent Garden Christmas Village to see the 60-foot Christmas tree and over 30,000 colorful lights.

Christmas lights tours

Hop onto a London black cab to tour neighborhoods like Chelsea, Belgravia, and Oxford Street decked in Christmas lights. Or go on a three-hour Christmas lights bike tour with a local guide. There’s also the Christmas Party Silent Disco Walking tour where you can dance to a specially curated playlist as you hit the top spots. Fun and laughter guaranteed.

London’s best Christmas lunch and dinner

The traditional English Christmas feast is similar to a Thanksgiving dinner. You can expect roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, Brussels sprouts, and Yorkshire pudding... Then, cue in dessert and you’ll be introduced to at least two surprises: mince pies (dried fruit-filled tartlets, no meat involved) and Christmas pudding, a kind of boiled or steamed fruit cake, doused in brandy and flambéed tableside.

You can sample these Christmas treats at London’s top restaurants , which are bustling this time of year. The one thing to remember: except for Chinatown , very few London restaurants take walk-ins on Christmas Day—many aren’t even open. So, book well in advance if you’re planning to eat out on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

We’ve rounded up some of London’s top-rated restaurants for that special Christmas meal.

Aviary Rooftop Restaurant & Terrace Bar

The Aviary ’s three-course Christmas menu highlights seasonal and sustainable British produce prepared using classic recipes with a sophisticated twist (vegetarian and plant-based options are available). Its rooftop location, at The Montcalm Royal London House , means you get splendid views of the city as you tuck into your holiday meal in a luxury heated igloo.

Cinnamon Club

Smoked Herdwick lamb escalope and galouti kebab mille feuille at Cinnamon Club

This former library-turned-restaurant in Westminster welcomes diners with a contemporary Indian menu. At Cinnamon Club , you’ll find hints of Indian spices in Britain’s most-cherished holiday dishes—there’s a garam masala–spiced Christmas pudding on the menu.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

If you’re looking for a truly grand affair on Christmas Day, book a table at this world-famous spot that boasts two Michelin stars. Enjoy a five-course festive menu by chef Heston Blumenthal which features gastronomic delights like plum meat fruit, sherried scallops, and a "Tipsy Cake".

Nicholson’s Pubs

Many branches of this all-British chain of pubs are open on December 25, and some even serve a five-course dinner. Treat yourself to roast turkey (vegetarian options also available) and top it off with a classic Christmas pudding at Nicholson's Pubs . Reservations and a deposit are required to secure your spot.

Things to do in London on Christmas Day

Busy street at Christmas with lights and decorations looking towards Piccadilly Circus

Getting around London on Christmas Day might be a little challenging as public transportation completely shuts down. You’ll have to rely on cabs, rental bikes, or cars.

Most Londoners tend to stay at home with their families on Christmas Day. December 26, on the other hand, is a whole other story. Many people hit the shops to take advantage of Boxing Day sales all across London.

Still, in case you won’t settle for just a good ole meal on Christmas Day, there are a couple of other things you can do around town.

London’s Royal Parks

Each of the eight parks belonging to Her Majesty is open on Christmas Day, which is perfect if you’re down for a stroll through the paths of Regent’s Park or Hyde Park . If you’re not staying near the city center, you can head to either Richmond Park in southwestern London or the historic Greenwich Park , in southeast London.

Christmas tours in London

Many of London’s attractions are closed on Christmas Day but that shouldn’t stop you from exploring the city. In fact, it’s the best time to see the quiet side of the city. Hop on a luxury coach to join the Sights and Sounds of London on Christmas Day guided tour and discover the city’s iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the Tower of London.

How To Spend Christmas in London

View of Christmas Decs at a market, London, England, UK

We have highlighted the best holiday activities and attractions in London during the festive season. However, for visitors planning to celebrate Christmas in London – actually  December 25 – we have a few more holiday tips so that you can best plan your trip.

Christmas Eve London

In London, December 24 is not a Bank Holiday – meaning, most things are open (but may close early)…and it’s actually quite busy. While some Londoners are preparing for the festivities of the following day, many more are out celebrating with family and friends.

Some of the top things to do in London on Christmas Eve are ice skating, attending a show, last-minute Christmas shopping and drinking mulled wine at one of the Christmas markets. Christmas concerts and midnight mass are two other top Christmas Eve events in London.

Christmas Day London

The Best London Christmas Lights, England, UK

Christmas Day in London is the quietest day of the year. Most stores and restaurants are closed – and the busy Transport for London network (Tube, Buses, Trains and Trams) all comes to a halt.

With nearly empty streets, it can be a great opportunity to embark on a Self-Guided Walking Tour of London or to rent a bike to pedal around. Additionally, some tourist services – like Thames River Cruises and Hop On Hop Off London Buses are running.

If the weather is agreeable, parks are some of the best places to go on Christmas Day in London. Swing by The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park on Christmas morning to watch the annual Serpentine Swimming Club race for the Peter Pan Cup or take a walk through Kensington Gardens. At dusk, wander down some of the classic London lanes lit with Christmas lights.

Attending a Christmas service at one of the city’s finest churches – like Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral or St. Martin-in-the-Fields – is another way to spend Christmas Day in London.

Christmas Dinners London

While most restaurants are closed on Christmas Day in London, there are a few exceptions. Some eateries and pubs are open for either lunch or dinner – and several hotels offer special London Christmas meals. In addition to the set menus for dinner, select hotels and restaurants host holiday brunch and Afternoon Tea on Christmas Day.

Travelers looking for the Best Christmas Dinner in London – or any meal out on December 25 – will need to make reservations far in advance!

For an alternative Christmas meal in London, visitors can go to Chinatown, where many restaurants are open on December 25. Another option is Beigel Bake on Brick Lane, a small deli that cranks out meaty sandwiches and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hotel bars might be a good last-minute option for a drink or light bite to eat for travelers who aren’t able to get a reservation in advance.

Boxing Day Events London

Battersea PowerStation Shopping Mall, Christmas, London

Boxing Day – the day after Christmas, December 26 – is a national holiday in London, England. However, unlike London Christmas Day, on Boxing Day almost all the stores, restaurants, holiday markets, ice skating rinks, museums, theaters and tourist attractions are open.

Typically, public transit is back up and running, albeit on a reduced schedule (but it’s always good to check before making any plans).

One of the best things to do in London on Boxing Day is to go shopping. Many retailers discount items the day after Christmas, so it a great time to score deals.

Watching football (or rather, soccer) is a Boxing Day tradition – as is cozying up in a British pub. Indulging in a boozy Boxing Day Brunch – where many restaurants offer bottomless drinks – is a fun way to spend the leisurely day, as well.

New Year’s Eve in London

London loves to Celebrate New Year’s Eve – and the biggest event is the London New Year’s Eve Fireworks over the River Thames. Tickets are required for the best spots (we particularly like the view from Westminster Bridge), but NYE Thames River cruises offer a unique vantage point and heaps of onboard fun!

Throughout London, restaurants and clubs host parties – from elegant affairs to all night raves. Another excellent way to spend New Year’s in London is at the theater.

London New Year’s Day

Balloons at the New Years Day Parade, London, England, UK

New Year’s Day in London is a national holiday, and the biggest celebration is the London New Year Day Parade. A tradition that has been going strong since 1987, the January 1 London parade is free to attend, but get there early!

New Year’s Day is also one of the last days to enjoy many of the festive holiday London markets, Christmas time performances and illuminated Christmas trees.

Travelers who want to do a little sightseeing on December 25 can find some London Tourist Christmas Day Buses running. To get around on Christmas Day, we recommend walking, cycling or booking an Uber or FreeNow Taxi.

Where To Stay in London for Christmas

Animal Light Displays, Riverside Christmas Market, London, England, UK

London is sprawling metropolis with thousands of hotels in a range of prices. Deciding where to stay for your London holiday trip can be a big conundrum – but it will likely come down to budget, desired amenities and preferred location.

A room at London’s poshest hotels that are decadently dressed up for the holidays – like The Ritz and The Connaught – will cost upwards of $1,500 per night. Other luxury hotels with fabulous holiday décor – such as The Ned and The Landmark – fetch more than $500 per night.

Budget-conscious travelers, however, can find more affordable hotels in the $150 per night range.

Our best advice for where to stay in London at Christmas is to first search for a hotel within your budget, then choose a hotel based on its location. The accommodation does not need to be city center (as London Christmas attractions are located from one end to the other), but it is best to be close to a Tube station to make getting around easy.

Additionally, popular places to stay in London at Christmas get booked well in advance, so plan ahead and book early .

Covent Garden Christmas Market

Covent Garden Christmas Market.

The streets of Covent Garden come alive with the joy of Christmas, adorned with festive illuminations. However, it’s inside this century-old market that the heart of the Christmas market beats.

I had the pleasure of attending this Christmas market on the day they lit up the lights this year, and it was just as magical as the previous year!

Covent Garden’s renowned Christmas lights brightened up on November 7, 2023. This year, the interior of the market building is adorned with an additional 40 giant bells with bows, 12 giant balls, and 8 rotating mirror balls.

Inside the market, you’ll find Santa’s traditional sleigh, and don’t miss the iconic Christmas tree standing at over 18 meters high, adorned with 30,000 twinkling lights, illuminating even the coldest London nights in Covent Garden Square.

For those unfamiliar, Covent Garden Christmas Market is celebrated for its unique and exclusive gifts, ranging from handmade jewelry to vintage fashion. While these treasures may not come cheap, a stroll through the stalls in Covent Garden might just surprise you.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Winter Warmer Festival , happening from November 7th to 26th, 2023, and the Christmas Sandwich Festival from December 7th to 17th, 2023, both hosted in Covent Garden.

Southbank Centre Winter Market near London Eye (Between The Bridges)

Southbank Centre Winter Market, Mercado de Natal de Londres perto do London Eye.

The Southbank Christmas market takes place on the banks of the River Thames not far from the London Eye and, for me, it wasn’t so much the craft stalls that caught my attention, but rather the food and drink stalls.

In fact, the weather was so cold that I was grateful for the quantity and variety of hot drinks in the market.

From tea to hot chocolate with marshmallows, to traditional mulled wine, each stall specializes in a different type of drink.

Honestly, it was very pleasant to stroll along the River Thames under twinkling lights with a steaming glass in hand, while browsing the street food in the stalls that looked like traditional alpine-style chalets.

Southbank Centre Winter Market.

In terms of food, you can count on some surprises such as truffle burgers, duck wraps, Thai street food, but also Lebanese-Mediterranean cuisine.

For a sweet touch, my suggestion is Dutch pancakes, as well as fruit skewers with chocolate coating.

Dates and opening hours : from 2 November to 26 December 2023, Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 to 22:00, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 23:00. Except for December 24th (from 10:00 to 16:00), December 25th (closed) and December 26th (from 11:00 to 15:00).

Now here’s a very special suggestion, Hogwarts in the Snow is only available from November 11, 2023 to January 14, 2024.

In other words, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the magic of Hogwarts while in London at Christmas.

Then you will have your transport back to London, meaning you don’t need to worry about getting around.

See London’s Christmas lights from a double-decker bus

Tour noturno para ver as iluminações de Natal em Londres (de autocarro).

Imagine traveling through the iconic streets of London on board a double-decker bus and seeing the Christmas lights up close… is that something that interests you?

Then take a look at this night tour to see the Christmas lights , which lasts 1:30 and has two possible departures: at the London Eye or Victoria.

Dinner aboard a Thames cruise, overlooking the Christmas lights

Cruzeiro/jantar no Tamisa.

It’s true that you can take a cruise on the Thames all year round, but believe me, at Christmas time it’s more rewarding.

There’s something romantic about the reflection of Christmas lights on the waters of the Thames that simply doesn’t exist at any other time.

So, if your idea is to have a different and special Christmas experience in London, accept my suggestion of having dinner on board a boat.

This Thames cruise and dinner tour is very complete as it includes a 4-course meal, sparkling wine welcome drink, live music and lasts approximately 3 hours.

Experience a free immersive show at Outernet London

Outernet London combines the latest immersive technology to create unique experiences related to music and art, resulting in different shows in four spaces that change over time.

At the time I visited the space, there was an immersive butterfly exhibition that was well worth it.

And, as a delightful bonus for the Christmas season, Outernet London offers free light and music shows with a festive twist! No need for thank me, just enjoy the magic.

Hotels near Christmas Markets in London

Decoração de Natal em Covent Garden (com sinos, arcos e bolas gigantes).

Choosing the right location for your stay is crucial to maximize your experience at the Christmas Markets in London.

While the metro system is efficient, the goal is to minimize the number of metro trips needed to explore the markets. Therefore, I recommend selecting a hotel near one of the main Christmas Markets in London.

During my visit, I opted for The Wedgewood Hotel (2 stars), a straightforward yet convenient choice in the Hyde Park area. It’s perfect for those planning to explore London’s popular Christmas Market, Winter Wonderland.

Alternatively, if you prefer the comfort of an apartment, consider NOX Waterloo , just a 15-minute journey from the Christmas Markets near the London Eye.

For those eyeing the Covent Garden area, The Z Hotel Covent Garden is a solid choice!

If none of these options suits your preferences, you can always explore the map for available hotels and Airbnb accommodations in London.

Everything you need to know about the Christmas Markets in London

Mercados de Natal de Londres, capital da Inglaterra.

What is the most famous Christmas market in London?

The most popular Christmas Market in London is Winter Wonderland , in Hyde Park, and it’s interesting because it has a paid entry in some occasions.

I believe this market has so many fans because of its size, as it is the biggest Christmas market in London, it is central and has good access, both by tube and bus.

In addition, there are carousels and other entertainment attractions, in addition to the traditional crafts, food and drink stalls.

Are Christmas Markets in London safe?

Absolutely. In my opinion, London Christmas Markets are safe, and here’s why:

Firstly, there is regular policing both on the streets where the markets are located and within the premises.

Secondly, the central streets of London are equipped with surveillance cameras, serving as a deterrent to potential incidents.

Regardless, it’s important not to overlook basic safety rules and common sense when traveling.

This includes avoiding less crowded areas after hours and being mindful of displaying valuable possessions

Is ATM payment available at the Christmas Markets, or should I withdraw pounds?

In London, cash payments have become increasingly rare, with most establishments, including street stalls, accepting ATM payments.

In my recent experiences, I haven’t found the need to withdraw pounds at an ATM as transportation, restaurants, and entertainment venues readily accept card payments.

The same holds true for the Christmas markets I’ve visited. I’ve exclusively used card payments for all transactions. In essence, if you have a credit or debit card, there’s no necessity to carry pounds to the Christmas markets.

Personally, I use the Revolut card for transactions abroad.

This not only simplifies the process but also helps me save on commissions, and I’ve had seamless experiences with it

What is the weather like at Christmas in London?

Dia de chuva em Londres.

December in London typically brings cold days, with average temperatures ranging between 4-9°C.

It might be surprising that darkness falls around 4 pm or even earlier.

Frequently overcast skies and occasional rain characterize the weather, but if luck is on your side, you may witness the enchanting sight of snowfall in London – a rare occurrence that adds a special touch to the holiday season.

Purchasing a Visitor Oyster Card and is one of the best things to do in London if you want to travel like a local. It can be used on most London public transport: Tube, buses, tram, DLR (Docklands Light Railway), Overground and National Rail services in London.

Our family did this on a recent trip to London. It was more economical for us to do this than to purchase 3 additional Oyster cards. My husband topped up two of his Oyster cards when we arrived in London for him and our youngest daughter to use.

My older daughters and I handily used Apple Pay on our watches each time we entered and exited the Tube. Using Apple Pay is a perfect option if you are sightseeing and planning things to do in London with teens.

2. Buckingham Palace, The Changing of the Guard and The Mall

You will be amazed with the throngs of people surrounding Buckingham Palace and filling all available sidewalk space when it is time for the Changing of the Guard.

On our first visit to London, Chris and I claimed a spot high above the crowds on one of the bridge posts and claimed it for over an hour to watch the guards. We had a lot of fun people-watching and hearing a variety of different languages being spoken as well.

There were policemen stationed at the crosswalks overseeing crowd control. They had their jobs cut out for them. People would never stop crossing. As it was, the policeman we were most entertained with had to keep yelling out, "The light is red. Stop crossing. STOP crossing!"

After awhile he would start going after the thoughtless souls, turn them around in the middle of the street and send them back to the sidewalk. After all, cars were coming. The people had no sense whatsoever.

So, word to the wise, stop crossing so you don't get yelled at !

The King's Guard is the name given to the guards responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace (including Clarence House) in London.

The Garden spreads across nine streets and one historic piazza. Be sure to stop at the Apple Market for a little shopping or Neal's Yard and Neal Street for the quaintest shops, boutiques and cafes.

The London Eye has been attracting guests for more than a decade and has spun to the top of the most popular tourist activity in London. Enjoy 360° views over London in one of the high-tech glass pods.

Chris and I attended a performance of Rock of Ages at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London ten years ago. You will cruise under a number of bridges—London Bridge and Tower Bridge to name a few—until reaching the Royal Borough of Greenwich. You can also take the return trip back to the Westminster Pier if you wish.

19. Imperial War Museum: The Holocaust Galleries

Chris and I were deep in thought and silent throughout our three-hour visit to this Holocaust exhibit as we read through the personal stories and tragedies of the victims of the Holocaust. View over "2,000 photos, books, artworks, letters and personal objects ranging from jewellery and clothing to toys and musical instruments" . ~ The Holocaust Galleries

You can also explore the Second World War Galleries at the Imperial War Museum. If you are looking for things to do in London with teens, this may or may not be the best option—you know your child best!

20. Museum of London Docklands

The Museum of London Docklands is one of the FREE museums of London that is a fun and interactive museum . It is one of the great children's museums in London. It details a history of London with the slave trade, the spice trade, growth of industry, and politics. It features a lot of fun hands-on areas for younger children to enjoy.

Location: 1 Warehouse, West India Quay, No, Hertsmere Rd, London E14 4AL

21. National Gallery

Located in Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery is another one of the FREE museums of London to visit . It highlights works from Paul Cézanne , Bellini, Monet, Michelangelo, van Dyke, van Gogh, Rembrandt, just to "name drop" a few famous painters.

The museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm and 9 pm on Friday evening. It ranks high among the FREE things to do in London. The National Gallery should be at the top of your ideas for a bucket list for London.

Location: Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN

22. Tower of London

Take a tour of the Tower of London where you will learn about the Bell Tower, see the crown jewels, read the history of the Kings being in favor and out of favor (it must have been a crazy time to live), view the the horses, the weapons, the cells, and the torture devices.

The tower, once best known for its torture and murders, apparently was a grand place to attend an afternoon beheading. It is much more tame in the 21st century but should be a must see on your list of things to do in London.

Location: Tower of London, London, EC3N 4AB

Day trips from london: ideas for a bucket list, 26. bath day trips from london.

This is one of the day trips in London for families that will be intriguing for everyone. The Roman Baths are located in Bath, a historic city about 2.5 hours outside of London. Beyond a tour of the Roman Baths, you can also see the Bath Abbey, the Circus (a historic circular shaped street filled with unique townhomes), Pulteney Bridge, and the River Avon.

A Circus in London often has nothing to do with clowns. "Circus" comes from the Latin root "circ" (meaning circle). It is a round open space at a street junction, ie., Picadilly Circus.

In Rome, however, a "circus" often refers to an arena that was used for chariot races, gladiator competitions, mock battles, and other blood sports, ie., the Circus Maximus.

27. Bristol

While in Bristol, my husband and I toured the SS Great Britain . You could spend a few hours here touring the hull, learning about the workings of the ship, and then exploring the inside of the ship with first class accommodations, lower class accommodations, the cooking area, bathrooms, etc.

The berths were about a foot wide and barely long enough for my 5'2" height.

Take the Cross Harbor Ferry to transport back and forth across the river.

Other things to do and see in Bristol on day trips from London are the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a River Cruise along the River Avon, and guided walking tours.

28. Cambridge

Cambridge, less than one hour from London, is a lovely town to visit for one of the best day trips from London by train.

Chris and I visited on a rainy day, but still enjoyed meandering along the Backs and the River Cam, touring King's College Chapel, and standing on the Bridge of Sighs. While the day was a little too wet for a punt tour, we saw plenty of the small boats docked along the river.

29. Day Trips from London to Cotswolds

The  Cotswolds  cover an expansive area of almost 800 square miles. You could spend days exploring delightful Cotswold villages with their charming markets and golden hued country homes.

I would classify the Cotswolds as one of my best day trips from London... ever!

During our recent visit to the Cotswolds , Chris and I noted that there were not a lot of transportation opportunities for getting to the Cotswolds and then between the villages. I would recommend that you rent a car.

A few of the amazing villages to add to your "must-see ideas for a bucket list::

  • Bourton-on-the-Water
  • Chipping Campden
  • Cirencester
  • Lower Slaughter
  • Upper Slaughter

30. Dartmoor National Park

"Dartmoor really does have something for everyone; history lovers can explore castle ruins and learn about local myths and legends at our museums or on a guided walk, families have plenty of exciting attractions to choose from, while there’s lots of opportunities for rambling over tors, cycling up challenging hills and staying active in the great outdoors." Visit Dartmoor

I loved seeing the Dartmoor ponies, photographing the sheep, and hiking to Bellever Tor (a tor is a hill or rocky peak). While seeing Highland cows was high on my list during our day trip from London, I was disappointed to not see any.

31. Paris Trips from London on the Eurostar

Want to enjoy train day trips from London to Paris? It is possible on the Eurostar. It takes less than 2.5 hours by train and offers you a wonderful day in the "City of Love" .

33. Day Trips from London to Stonehenge

Stonehenge may fall into the category of otherworldly. This world-famous monument was built over 5000 years ago in the Neolithic period. Who, What, Why are all questions that historians seek to answer.

Most people visit Stonehenge to view the Stone Circle, but this UNESCO World Heritage Site also has five Neolithic houses to explore designed after remains that were excavated in 2006.

As there are no direct trains to Stonehenge, the best way to visit this popular tourist site is by car or with a tour.

34. Weston-super-Mare

Weston-super-Mare, or Weston for short, is a seaside town in North Somerset, England. It makes the perfect summer getaway when you are looking for day trips from London and ideas for a bucket list.

  • Walk along the beach
  • Visit the helicopter museum
  • Explore the Grand Pier
  • Visit the Lambretta Museum of scooters
  • Try scones with clotted cream and jam at Mr. Fox's Tearoom (In the United States, clotted cream would technically be called... butter)
  • Ride the Ferris Wheel

35. Windsor Castle

Located just 20 miles outside of the city center, a visit to Windsor is a perfect day trip from London. Windsor Castle is one of the official royal residences. Wander the castle grounds and discover the chapel where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married .

Be sure to book your Windsor Castle tickets in advance.

After exploring the Castle and the grounds, you can stroll along the Long Walk, a 2.5 mile path that connects the castle to The Great Park. A few great ideas for a bucket list.
