Cincinnati's Premier Brewery, Distillery and Winery Tasting Tours

Cincinnati, a city whose beer history remains unknown to most of its loyal patrons, was one our countries top beer producers from the mid 1800's through prohibition. In fact, the beer industry accounted for almost 40% of our economy, producing nearly 1,000,000 barrels of beer per year at its peak.

Cincinnati Produced the most amount of wine in the Country in 1859 with Longworth's "Sparkling Catawba".

We had one of the largest concentrations of Distilleries and Saloons in the world!

At Cincy Brew Bus, Cincy Wine Wagon, and Cincy Bourbon Bus we want to share these facts, and many more, with the finest people and the finest beverages we know.....beer, bourbon, and wine.

Cincinnati’s Old Brewery Tunnels

Are open for tours  .

Welcome to the Queen of Beers – Cincinnati! In the 1800s, Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory, and Cincinnati was called the Queen of the West. By the end of the Nineteenth Century, the bustling river town was considered by many as the Beer Capital because of the high ratio of beer manufactured to the number of citizens. Most of which were clustered in the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood.

cincinnati brewery tour underground

Over-The-Rhine was heavily populated by German immigrants. They drew a comparison from the Miami and Erie Canal to the River Rhine back in the old country. Breweries galore popped up in the area, rivaling the production anywhere in the country before Prohibition. It was a time before mechanical refrigeration chilled the industry at large. So, to keep brew cool, tunnels and caverns were dug deep enough beneath the city streets that an underworld mushroomed. These were the original beer caves!

cincinnati brewery tour underground

When modernization rendered the elaborate labyrinth obsolete, there was no practical use for the tunnel system. It was buried and largely forgotten. As old streets were torn up and old buildings were torn down, the crushed brick and concrete pieces were brushed into the vent and drainage systems to fall into the idle caverns below.

Many decades later, like archaeologists excavating a lost city, these tunnels and caverns were slowly chiseled out and cleared. And then, tours took people into the depths to rediscover Cincinnati’s drunk history. In one cavern with a ceiling height of 20 or more feet, a pyramid of rubble starts at a point near street level by a tiny drain hole and expands to a base nearly the width of the room.

cincinnati brewery tour underground

Tours today offer a fantastic look at the massive subterranean cellars lost to time. Along the way, a guide will share the tales of the beer barons, brew masters, and the workers who made it all happen. Above-ground stops feature the architecture of some of the historic brewery facades sitting like time capsules. These include Christian Moerlein sites, Rhinegeist Brewery, the Sohn/Mohawk Brewery, Lafayette Hudepohl and Kaufman structures, and Jackson Brewery.

Tourgoers should bring comfortable walking shoes, expectations of tight steep staircases, and a light jacket for the chillier depths. Admission usually includes a pint of local beer or a soft drink at a neighborhood taproom.

Plan your subterranean adventure through Cincinnati Brewing Heritage Trail at brewingheritagetrail.org/tours .

Our neighborhood group (roughly 36 people) were picked up on time and in our neighborhood, so no one had to Uber home later that night. Our tour/beer guide Michael was awesome. He knew a TON about Cincinnati Brewery History, as well as, just good old fashion city history which kept us entertained all night. We had plenty of beer at our 3 stops and were not rushed to get thru the brewery. I highly reccomend using Cincy Brew Bus if you want a fun night out at some cool local breweries. The abandoned Cincinnati subway is perhaps the city's most captivating underground area because of its sheer enormity and restricted access to the public. Construction began in 1920 and failed to finish more than two miles of tunnel before being scrapped 25 years later after the end of World War Two. While tours were offered in the past, it is no longer accessible. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 6.14.18

A Journey Into the Eerie, Old, & Oft Forgotten Underground World of Cincinnati

The former Jackson Brewery features multiple levels of underground areas used for storing beer when it was still in operation. The building is built at the base the hill at McMicken Ave and Elm Street in Over-the-Rhine. / Image: Phil Armstrong, Cincinnati Refined // Published: 6.14.18

When our Cincinnati forbearers needed something done, they dug.

If they needed to move materials and foment trade, they dug a canal. When they needed to chill their beer, they dug lagering cellars and tunnels to connect them. When they needed to pump the Ohio River for drinking water, they dug down 125 feet into the floodplain and sunk massive steam engines there to do the work. And when the canal became a cesspool, they dug a subway – or, ya know, started to...

And why not dig? Labor in the late-1800s and early-1900s was cheap and plentiful. As a result, industrialists and town officials had local workers dig, and dig, and dig – often for 12 hours per day, six days per week.

All these underground laborers left behind an eclectic patchwork of eerie and exciting attractions, often literally right under our feet. Queen City residents and visitors alike should take the time to explore these underground marvels.

BEER BELOW IN OVER-THE-RHINE

Beer cellars and tunnels abound beneath Over the Rhine. For one, the Christian Moerlein Malthouse Tap Room sits atop cellars and sub-cellars, all dug by German brewers to chill their lager beer through the hot summers. Both the Brewing Heritage Trail and American Legacy Tours offer public tours of several other cellars and tunnels, including the defunct Jackson and Crown breweries.

Two local artists even used a cellar under Union Hall for an immersive comic book experience. The MeSseD Tunnel Tour brings visitors into the cellar to read the eight-foot high comic book panels. Appropriately, the comic follows the exploits of a sewer worker who runs into some unexpected (and unwelcome) company within a city’s underground tunnels.

CINCINNATI TRIPLE STEAM

In the late 1800s, Cincinnati was beset by challenges getting water to its burgeoning population. Attempts at building a variety of pumping systems at the Front Street Station failed — as did a floating pumping station — until the city finally addressed the issue in 1898 by beginning construction of what’s now known as Cincinnati Triple Steam. Deep into the Cincinnati Water Works campus on Kellogg Avenue, the underground facility includes four 1,400-ton, 104-foot triple expansion crank and flywheel steam engines. The facility's steam engines pumped the city’s water from 1906 to 1963 when they were replaced with electric pumps.

Tours run the first Saturday of each month and will take you down to five feet below the bottom of the Ohio River.

THE ILL-FATED SUBWAY

Every resident knows of Cincinnati's eerie subway. Nearly 100 years ago, the city built two miles of tunnel and six stations before initial funding ran out. Due to the triple whammy of World War One, The Great Depression, and World War Two, the project was abandoned in the 1940s.

Currently, there is no public access (we had to work through a number of city officials to get access to just the Race Street station for photos), although local tour operators are petitioning the city with plans to make the space accessible, safe, and — perhaps, finally — open for business.

Head to the gallery above for photos of several of Cincinnati's underground areas, including the abandoned subway at the Race Street station.

A Comparison of Cincinnati Underground Tours

See the fascinating subterranean world  of a subway system that never was beneath the streets of Cincinnati.

cincinnati brewery tour underground

(Photo: Viator.com)

There was once a dream among city planners in Cincinnati to give the citizens of this Ohio city fast, affordable inner city train travel. Towards the end of World War I, work began on construction. By the onset of the Great Depression, a little over a decade later, despite two miles of tunnel already built, the project was canned. Now, those tunnels have the ignominious title of longest abandoned subway in the US, which makes them perfect for exploration. Here are five different styles of underground tour in the Queen City.

Brewers & Barons Trail Tour

Around the time the plans to build a subway in Cincinnati were failing, Prohibition was also failing US society by fueling the rise in organized crime. It also led to plenty of illegal brewing activity. This two-hour walking tour takes guests around the city’s Brewery District, uncovering stories that go way back to the 19 th century’s brewing barons. The guided tour follows the Brewing Heritage Trail, includes some beer tastings, and stops by a number of historic brewing sites to see what’s left of their underground operations. Tours on Sat only. From $39 per person.

Over & Under the Rhine Tour

One of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods is called Over-the-Rhine, where many landmarks such as Washington Park and Findlay Market are located. This tour combines rides on the streetcar, plus around a mile of walking to explore these and other sites, plus delves below the ground to see remnants of that aborted subway system, as well as delving really deep down into the old cold-storage facility of Gerke Brewery. A pint of beer at a local taproom is also included in this tour. Tours on Sat, plus Wed and Fri in warmer months. From $39 per person.

Ultimate Queen City Underground Tour

The benefit of a good underground tour is that, even for people who think they know Cincinnati well, there’s plenty more going on out of sight. That is what this Queen City underground tour aims to explore: the important moments in history that flew under the radar, the hidden underground world of crypts and tunnels, and more. This walking tour lasts around 150 minutes. Daily tours from April to early September, then on weekends only in colder months. From $45 per person.

Hidden Brewery Caverns Tour in Cincinnati with Beer Tasting

Brewery tours are a hugely popular way to explore the suds of Cincinnati while also getting the chance to see underground caverns and tunnels linked to breweries past and present. This hugely popular tour explores the history of at least five breweries, some now defunct – such as Jackson Brewery, where exclusive access to their subterranean tunnels really adds flavor to the history – and some still in operation – such as Northern Row Brewery, where guests over the age of 21 get to take part in a beer tasting. From $49 per person.

Cincinnati Brewing & Distilling Tasting Tour

An alternative type of brewery tour focusses more on the styles of brewing and distilling beers and spirits that have been used in Cincinnati through the years. Taking place largely indoors, this option operated by the Brewing Heritage Trail, runs only on Saturdays and includes both a beer flight tasting and a spirit sampling. Head underground to the old beer fermentation cellar at the now-defunct Jackson Brewery, then see how things are done today in a behind the scenes look at Northern Row Brewery and Distillery. From $49 per person.

How Neal Shipley claimed Masters low amateur honors: ‘A little bit of grit’

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 11: Neal Shipley of the United States follows a shot on the fifth hole during the first round of the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 11, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. (Photo by Warren Little/Getty Images)

  • Follow live coverage of the third round of the 2024 Masters today

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Neal Shipley wasn’t raised in a golf family. But he did grow up with a family that loved golf.

The Sunday afternoon of the 2004 PGA Championship was all it took for the Ohio State graduate student — the only amateur to make the cut at this week’s Masters — to fish his dad’s neglected golf clubs out of a closet and give this humbling game a lifelong shot.

“Me and my dad were on our couch,” Shipley said Friday after finishing 36 holes at Augusta National at 3 over and making the cut by three shots. “And Vijay Singh won. The next day I took my dad’s golf clubs, which were dusty and probably never used, and started swinging around. I decided to get my own little set, and it took off from there.”

Shipley wasn’t just hooked; he was adamant. As an elementary schooler, he told anyone in his hometown of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., that he intended to become a professional golfer. In the second grade, he took his bag to school for “show and tell.” Shipley’s class ventured outdoors at recess to watch him launch drives into the schoolyard. He was a regular at his local junior league. Shipley’s family eventually decided to join St. Clair Country Club so he could properly hone his craft.

“We joined a country club so that he’d have a place to play,” says his father, also named Neal Shipley, “but we’re not country club people.”

Twenty years later, Shipley will play the weekend at the 88th Masters at a firm and fast Augusta National after being invited as the 2023 U.S. Amateur runner-up. He’s tied for 30th, hanging right in there with legends of the game, including 61-year-old Singh, who sits at 4 over, one stroke behind the 23-year-old on the leaderboard through 36 holes.

With his signature long locks spilling down his neck, Shipley will walk up the 18th fairway Sunday evening with low amateur honors locked up. He is the only survivor of the five amateurs in the field. But that wasn’t always guaranteed.

Shipley’s name snuck into the top 10 early Friday morning with back-to-back birdies on his second and third holes to reach 3 under. Hours later, he endured an Augusta National ritual: an Amen Corner implosion.

A drive in the pine straw and a sloppy three-putt on 11, followed by a misplaced tee shot on the par-3 12th cost Shipley three shots in two holes, bringing the projected cut line dangerously into play with winds picking up by the minute.

The remainder of Shipley’s back nine wasn’t perfect, but he hammered away, holing a 39-footer and a 20-footer for birdies at Nos. 13 and 15, respectively.

“He’s a Western Pennsylvania kid,” Shipley’s dad says. “We all have a little bit of grit.”

Following a birdie on No. 13, Neal Shipley is the lowest amateur on the course. #themasters pic.twitter.com/3MAjI3yltE — The Masters (@TheMasters) April 11, 2024

To follow his stunning opening-round 71, Shipley carded a 4-over 76 Friday. It could have been a lot worse, but it wasn’t. A bogey at the 18th put Shipley just inside the cut line for the moment, which ballooned as the afternoon wore on. Now the graduate student is tied with Akshay Bhatia, last week’s PGA Tour winner, and nine shots off of Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau’s shared lead.

“After going bogey, double, bogey on that stretch there, it’s easy to lose some momentum,” Shipley said. “We did a good job of staying in it and just trying to hit some good golf shots the entire time.”

Shipley uses “we” like a seasoned pro when describing the shots he executed alongside his caddie Friday afternoon. But when Shipley uses the plural pronoun, he means it.

Shipley has his childhood best friend, Carter Pitcairn, a sophomore on the Wisconsin golf team, on the bag for him this week. The pair also teamed up at the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills last summer, the championship that got him into the Masters field and brought him momentary viral stardom for his everyman vibe and candid personality. When he officially punched his ticket to the Masters, Shipley slammed his burly physique into Pitcairn and yelled ‘Gimme some!’ on the Golf Channel broadcast.

Pitcairn and Shipley attended the same high school, grew up playing the same golf course and shared transportation to and from team practice every day for a year.

“A lot of McDonald’s trips and miles together in the car,” Shipley said. “A bunch of country music. We both like to go fly-fishing too and do stuff like that.”

cincinnati brewery tour underground

Shipley might be the one touching the club, but his family might as well be holding on with him. And that doesn’t just include his father and his mother, Susie, who tracked every shot Thursday and Friday. It’s his 26-year-old sister, Fabi, and 21-year-old brother, Max. It’s his roommate, Jacob, who is eager to share stories about the dart board in their apartment back in Columbus, and Jacob’s father, who brags about how fast Shipley can down a beer. It’s Pitcairn’s parents and Shipley’s Ohio State college coach.

The Shipley crew runs deep — approximately 15 people are watching him this week in Augusta — and their collective Masters memories will run even deeper no matter what happens next.

Shipley’s success this week didn’t shock his circle of friends, family members and teammates supporting him here in Augusta. Before completing a graduate degree at Ohio State, Shipley earned his degree in quantitative finance from James Madison University with minors in mathematics and economics.

Shipley is an analytical thinker, and he took every measure to prepare for his week at the Masters. He used all five practice trips allotted for amateurs to acclimate to Augusta National, playing 140 holes on the Alister MacKenzie design before the tournament began. Shipley also had lunch with six-time Masters champion and Ohio State alum Jack Nicklaus, who shared pivotal course strategy insights, and received additional advice from Larry Mize.

The intensity with which Shipley prepared for the Masters was partly because it could be his only Masters. Shipley’s game got hot right before his run at U.S. Am. Coming out of high school, he barely cracked the top 400 in his class ranking. After three years at James Madison, he stood at No. 1,497 in the world amateur golf ranking. Shipley’s recent form has been strong, but you never know what can happen in this tumultuous game.

“Maybe things don’t turn out the way you want to,” Shipley says. “I certainly don’t think it’s going to be my last Masters, but I think you have to treat every Masters as if it’s your last, probably until you win. I think that kept me loose and not as nervous, just trying to enjoy the moment.”

Shipley might not know it yet, but no matter what transpires over the weekend and in his professional career, he won’t remember the 2024 Masters for his birdies and bogeys.

The elder Neal Shipley pauses mid-sentence as he stands underneath the big oak tree that shades the Augusta National clubhouse, tears welling in his eyes.

He’s recounting a devotional he shared with his son before the Masters. Now the father isn’t sure of what he’ll get to say to Neal in advance of Saturday’s round. The 23-year-old is staying in a separate house for maximum focus.

“Accomplishments big or small, when you see your kids achieve their goals, it’s the most wonderful feeling possible,” his dad says.

Shipley’s father might not know when he’ll speak to Neal next or what words he’ll choose when he does. But he does know what he’ll be doing early Sunday evening: watching his son on TV, as he sits next to Jim Nantz and the new Masters champion in Butler Cabin.

Not bad for a family that didn’t play golf until that one day two decades ago.
