Germany experiences a temperate seasonal climate with four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Summers are generally mild to warm, with average temperatures ranging from 20° to 30°C (68° to 86°F). Winters can be cold, especially in the northern and eastern regions, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and occasional snowfall. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year, although the summer months tend to be wetter. The coastal areas, such as Hamburg and Bremen, have a maritime climate with milder winters and cooler summers compared to the inland regions.
On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits
Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb
Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”
- *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.
So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.
Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.
Packing Tips for Your Tour
Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:
Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
- Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
- Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
- Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
- Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.
Sun Protection:
- Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
- Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .
Medications and First Aid:
- Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
- Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.
Toiletries:
- Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
- Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
- A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).
Electronics:
- A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
- Mobile phone.
- Chargers for each electronic you bring.
- Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
- Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
- Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).
Miscellaneous:
- A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
- Insect repellent.
- Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
- A small travel alarm.
- A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
- A travel pillow.
- Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
- Light sleepwear.
- A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
- Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).
Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.
Electricity
American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while European appliances run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
As a result, American appliances designed for use in the United States (typically 120 volts at 60 Hz) may not be directly compatible with the higher voltage used in European countries. Plugging a 120-volt appliance into a 220-240-volt outlet without the appropriate voltage converter or transformer can cause damage to the appliance or pose safety risks.
If you plan to bring American appliances to Europe, you will need a voltage converter or transformer to change the voltage to 220-240 volts from 110 volts. Additionally, you will likely need a plug adapter to fit the American-style plug into the European power outlets. All of Europe operates on the same two round-pronged outlets (Type C).
It's important to note that not all appliances are compatible with voltage converters, so it's essential to check the labels or user manuals of your devices before using them with a voltage converter. Some electronic devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and camera chargers, are dual voltage and can support 120V and 220-240V, so they may not require a voltage converter, but a plug adapter will still be necessary.
To avoid any issues with electrical compatibility during your travels, consider purchasing appliances specifically designed for the voltage used in the region you'll be visiting or use appropriate voltage converters and plug adapters to ensure the safe operation of your American appliances in Europe.
We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. And to pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them with you.
Hair Dryers in Your Hotel
Hair dryers are common accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.
Air Conditioning
Air conditioning is commonly available in European hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings. Most hotels in Europe can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.
Traveling by coach
Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.
Airport transfers
Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if you are traveling on a tour operated by Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, or Luxury Gold and your flight times coincide with the shuttle-coach transfer timings. Learn more about Airport Transfers here .
To enable you to personalize your tour experience, you will find a number of Optional Experiences designed to complement the itinerary. These are designed to offer a deeper insight into the culture and character of the areas to be visited and provide some wonderful highlights to your travels. The optional program is designed to let you experience more of what interests you and to get the most from your vacation without replacing or overlapping with anything included in an itinerary.
The majority of Optional Experiences will be offered to you by your Travel Director at the beginning of your trip. Some may be subject to change, depending on the time you are traveling or local circumstances, including weather and days of the week. Your Travel Director will provide further information.
Usually, most Optional Experiences will be priced in the local currency, but please read through the details of individual optional experiences for specific information. Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.
It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.
In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .
Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.
It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.
When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

Berlin Christmas Market 2022
Around the end of November until the beginning of January, Berlin will leave you spoilt for choice with its Christmas Markets. With over 50 in the city alone there truly is something for everyone.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche Christmas Market is the biggest and gets around 4 million visitors per year. Set in the backdrop of the World War II damaged memorial church you can expect to find a small village of wooden huts selling everything from Artwork, decorations and jewellery; to wines, foods, and delicious roasted almonds. The market is right by the Kurfarstendamm, filled with even more shops. The shopping won't stop until you say so!
Need somewhere to entertain the children? Try the Alexanderplatz. This market offers fair rides, a merry-go-round and a nearby ice rink to entertain the little ones. Alternatively, the Potsdamer Platz Christmas Market features a nearby Winter World where you can enjoy skating, and an amazing toboggan run. There may also be concerts, carousels and entertainment beautifully lit by fairy lights.
The Spandau Christmas Market is sure to leave you hearing a choir of angels. Expect up to 400 stalls on a weekend and 200 on a weekday. What better way to get into the spirit of then with a nativity scene using real live animals.
There's also Chanukkah (Hanukkah) Christmas Market at the Jewish Museum, Christmas Magic Market at Gendarmenmarkt and so much more. After a hard day's shopping, there's the Berlin nightlife to enjoy. Oh what fun it is to visit Berlin Christmas Markets in 2022
Cologne Christmas Market 2022
The Neumarkt Christmas Market is Colognes oldest and largest, usually situated in front of the Church St. Aposteln. Some of the older stands date back to the origins of Colognes first Christmas market in the '70s.
Here you find things like artisan goods and decorative plates. A medieval castle wall serves as a backdrop for the Rudolfplatz Market, giving it that fairytale feeling. This market is festive from its large fairytale figures and illuminations right down to its miniature Santas perched on top of the bins with sacks ready to collect your rubbish. Speaking of medieval, head to the chocolate museum on the banks of the Rhine where you will be transported back to the Middle Ages at the Medieval Christmas Market. See jugglers, jesters and medieval craftsmen at work dressed in full costume. Hear ancient tales of old and medieval musicians. The aromas from the many cooking stalls serving anything from grilled wild boar to the 'lovers drink' (spiced hot red wine).
Be sure to visit the Lindt chocolate museum and shop, complete with its very own chocolate fountain. Do not forget to visit the floating Christmas Market on the banks of the Rhine on board the MS Wappen von Mainz one of the largest cruise ships on the Rhine. And who can forget one of the newest Christmas Markets at Stadtgarten? Situated in the oldest of Cologne's parks this Christmas Market offers a more relaxed atmosphere, it also offers entertainment for the children. While you're there be sure to try some raclette or some gluhwein and to shop until your heart's content.
Düsseldorf Christmas Markets 2022
Spend a wonderful time visiting Christmas markets in Düsseldorf by coach. A visit to the Düsseldorf's Christmas markets as they begin in late November, gives you that holiday feeling, especially in the Old Town! You'll find numerous tents with souvenirs, mulled wine, sweets, delicacies from different countries in Europe, street bars where you can sit outside under a warm lamp for hours, drinking a hot beverage while enjoying the magical Christmas atmosphere.
The difference between Düsseldorf's Christmas markets from other cities in Germany is that it is spread throughout the city. Tents with typical German attributes of Christmas can be found in almost every square or street in Düsseldorf.
Of course, the main place of celebration is the Marktplatz square near the town hall, this is the heart of the Old Town, where you'll find the main Christmas tree, which is traditionally brought from Norway.
There are always open areas where street performances and puppet shows are held, leaving everyone entertained. The streets are lined with trees decked in festive illumination, shimmering with thousands of lights, and in the air, there is the smell of mulled wine and gingerbread. Time seems to fly in such a festive atmosphere turning the tedious process of choosing and buying presents into an unforgettable adventure.

BEST OF GERMANY BY TRAIN
Really enjoyed this tour. It was exactly what we were looking for, the independence to do what we wanted on some days and some tours organised for us on other days. Communication from Tour radar was great through What’s App. The only thing we would change would be to upgrade the two 3 star motels to 4 star motels.

What people love about christmas & new year tours in germany.
A fascinating, (sometimes too) whistlestop tour of German towns and cities. The tour guide Zsofi and her driver were probably the best I've ever had - they were helpful, upbeat and very clear in their instructions. Trip 'Good' rather than 'Excellent' because of the location of the hotels, most of which were so on the outskirts of a city that it limited what we could do in our free time. Also, some days towards the end of the tour were a bit rushed - the whole thing could stand to be at least two days longer.

- Lueneburg (with a great hotel, your home for the following 6 nights)
- Hamburg (including St. Pauli at night)
- Rostock (including Baltic port of call Warnemuende)
- Quedlinburg/ Harz Mountains (under UNESCO’s Heritage)
Every year at the beginning of Advent the season of the colorful Christkindl and Christmas Markets draw many visitors to Germany from all over the world. At evenings when dusk falls and snow glitters on the roofs of the enchanting little stalls the dreams of fairyland really become true !
Arrive at hamburg airport - transfer to your hotel.
A warm welcome awaits you upon arrival by your Tour Director, followed by a transfer to your charming Hotel in LUENEBURG (about 35 miles south of Hamburg), your home and base for the following 6 nights. This evening join your Tour Director for a welcome reception and for dinner at the hotel. (D/OV)
Following breakfast you are invited first for a sightseeing tour of Lueneburg, known for its fine red brick houses founded during the middle ages. See the old Brewery, a gabled Renaissance building decorated with twisted brick motifs and medallions. From here enjoy a pleasant view of the galleried buildings overlooking the river Illmemau and a historic mill. You will be visiting the Luene Convent, a Gothic cloister and its fountain are the outstanding features of this remarkable 15th C. abbey. View the old town square, St. John’s Church and admire the city’s notable Town Hall that stands for an assemblage of different buildings from the 13th to 18th C. with a great Council Chamber, a Renaissance masterpiece of the 16th C. – Ample time left to enjoy Lueneburg’s special Christmas ambiance, its festive lights illuminated through colorful candles, nutcrackers, wooden toys, honey cakes and roasted chestnuts.... Later, return to your hotel in time for freshening up, for dinner and overnight. (B & D/OV)
Today’s bus charter tour leads to Berlin, capital again of reunited Germany. You will travel on sweeping boulevard Unter den Linden and stop at the city’s landmark Brandenburg Gate which has symbolized the former division. Close the former Reichstag building that now houses the German Parliament. We stop at Checkpoint Charly, once crossing point between East and West Berlin and continue with our drive on famous avenue Kurfuerstendamm, passing Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, a reminder of World War II destruction. – Right here at the Christmas Market more than a hundred traders, exhibitors and artisans offer their Christmas goods, like crafts with a medieval touch, glass arts, featuring jewelry and antique toys.... Why not try here some culinary delights from taffy apples, perhaps one of the city’s popular “Currywurst” or a special punch of “Feuerzangenbowle”, before our coach takes us back to Lueneburg for dinner and overnight. (B & D/OV)
After another hearty breakfast your morning excursion starts with a short drive to Hamburg, one of Europe’s largest ports. The bus-drive leads along the Alster Lake, where lights are reflected and will stop near the quaint market place with its sumptuous Town Hall and Clock Tower erected in Renaissance style. Enjoy here its most beautiful Christmas Market tastefully decorated booth and wooden huts offering classic products, arts and handicrafts, ceramics from Saxony and even woodcarvings from Tyrol in Austria . Don’t miss an “Aachener Printen”, a sweet delicacy or a piece of the original gingerbread from Nurenberg. Artists and silversmiths invite you to participate in trying your hands on their crafts.... – Following this enjoyable visit the drive takes you to Hamburg’s amusement quarter “Reeperbahn” in St. Pauli where bars and dance halls invite “lonely” visitors from all over the world. Take your chance if you like and do as you please before we return in time to our Hotel. (B & D/OV)
During the morning you will discover the old Hanseatic City of Rostock, founded in the early 13th C. A short orientation drive is followed by an easy walking tour of the historic center which shows colorfully painted merchant houses, its great Town Hall and the venerable Gothic Church of St. Mary dominates the nearby market square. The inside tour of this remarkable church will show the world's oldest astronomical clock of the 15th C. which is still working. – The colorful Christmas fair in this Hanseatic Town is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the Northern part of Germany. Its charming atmosphere, its lovingly decorated stalls and the romantic setting at the historic market place combine to create the right feeling for the Advent season and are a fitting prelude to Christmas Eve. – A side trip will take you to the Baltic call of port Warnemuende and to its promenade and pier to enjoy here it's pretty decorated Christmas-trees and candles. Gifts are not such mass-produced but craftwork of real quality. You will find many are difficult to resist, as will be a glass of delicious mulled wine you are offered and the baked apples that are very welcome on a crisp winter day...- Toward evening you will return to your hotel in Lueneburg for dinner and overnight. (B & D/OV)
Quedlinburg
Another highlight of your tour takes you - by your hired coach - today to the ancient town of Quedlinburg, one of the UNESCO’s protected cities and located right at the Harz Mountains. Here, more than a thousand half-timbered houses bring the Middle Ages to life. Stroll the winding lanes and visit its mighty Cathedral with the tomb of Heinrich I, the first German king. – The charming Christmas Market here attracts thousands of visitors each year and its scene of a colorful tradition and beautiful lighting. Here you may buy all kinds of Christmas merchandise and gifts, especially traditional goods, like miniature Christmas trees, gold-foil angles. The spicy smell of mulled wine, the aroma of roasting almonds and fancy cakes make pre-Christmas shopping truly a sensory experience. – Tonight, your farewell-dinner will be a festive occasion with wine, local music and a valuable gift. We wish this last evening the most enjoyable one of your Christmas Market Tour! (B&D/OV)

Christmas Markets have been around in Europe since the late middle ages and are a great place to look for stocking fillers and get the whole family into the spirit of Christmas. Markets usually take place during the last week of November through to December, with stalls selling a range of wonderful products including hot mulled wine for the adults and cookies (among other treats) for the children. They're also a great place for the locals to showcase their talents with a range of handmade items such as nutcrackers, candles, music boxes and other decorations, all of which make great Christmas gifts. Nativity scenes, skating rinks and Christmas trees all add to the magical winter wonderland setting with twinkling lights.
Germany is the birthplace of the Christmas Market where you can shop to a magical backdrop of cathedrals and candlelit caves. You should visit German Christmas Markets if you want to escape commercialism and swap it for a more traditional and authentic shopping experience beneath a sky of twinkling fairy lights. Popular markets in Germany are Cologne, Rüdesheim, Berlin and Aachen. You should also, if budgets allow, take a cruise along The Rhine where you will also get the opportunity to visit a few destinations.
Although extremely popular, Germany isn't the only place to visit, you should also experience the Christmas Markets in Holland where you are taken underground to follow a cobweb of candlelit corridors to a beautiful velvet cave setting for the Valkenburg Xmas Market. Belgium is another great place for Christmas Markets with its sparkling winter settings and traditional delicacies of ' klaasjes ' and 'speculoos' in Bruges, Ypres and Liege. Other continental Christmas Markets can be found in France, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic.
A variety of markets can also be found in the UK for those of you who do not wish to travel far, but would still like to soak up the festive spirit. UK Christmas often have a continental theme bringing over French, German or Italian traders. You'll find them in a variety of venues from town centres to stately homes such as Chatsworth House with some taking place over a weekend and others lasting a lot longer.
It doesn't matter which Christmas Market break venue you visit, you'll find stalls to explore, goods to sample and festive carols combining, where you can lose yourself in the holiday spirit.
Tis' the season to be jolly! The Door2Tour.com Miniguide to Christmas Markets.
What do i wear.
The majority are held outside so make sure that you dress suitably for spending time in the open air. Warm clothing, comfortable shoes and a brolly should help you deal with the British weather in winter.
What should I take?
Layers, layers and more layers as it's chilly outside. Loose change or small currency notes are also advisable for the stalls as credit or debit cards are not always accepted. Take a big bag and some 'J' cloths or kitchen towels to protect those delicate gifts you've purchased.
Plan your trip?
It's worthwhile visiting the websites for the Christmas Market that you intend to visit so you can find out who will be exhibiting and what delights will be on offer. Some also provide programmes that you can download but if you can't find a particular stall, ask the friendly guides who will be happy to help.
Avoid the hustle and bustle
If you want a more leisurely experience, visiting the markets on weekdays would be best. Evenings tend to be busier than the daytime, whereas Monday to Thursday nights are usually the quietest. Expect the weekends to be busy and crowded.
Are the markets easily accessible?
The majority are suitable for wheelchair users but it might be worth considering that some are located on cobbled streets (not suitable for high heels) and there could be narrow alleyways to contend with.
Where can I eat and drink? You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink with many stalls offering Glühwein, Bratwurst, Christmas Stollen, Lebkuchen, hot chocolate, mince pies and mulled wine. Make time to eat in a traditional cafe or restaurant if you're visiting a continental market.
Can I take photographs?
Yes you can but photography should be for personal use only.
Can I bring the children with me?
Of course, children are welcome at any of the Christmas Markets but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. They're a great experience for the whole family to get into the spirit of Christmas.
What will I find at the Christmas Markets? Christmas Markets are perfect for finding that elusive Xmas gift for someone who has everything! You'll find traditional handicrafts, lighting, decorations, nutcrackers, candles, glass baubles, music boxes and wonderful edible treats!
What else can I do there?
As well as exploring your Christmas Market of choice, make time to see some of the sights in the city you're visiting. These can vary from churches and museums to baroque palaces, shopping arcades and popular tourist attractions.
