Which deck on the Noordam??
By phoebeann , July 7, 2010 in Cabin Selection Tips

Wondering if anyone can help advise me as to which deck to choose on the Noordam. We will be booking a verandah stateroom (not sure which category as yet) and intend sailing on the 17 day Mediterranean Impressions cruise on May 14 next year. After much reading of various cruise critic boards I am still unsure as to which cabin to select. From my reading, I gather that an aft or mid ship cabin on a lower deck is more stable. Looking at the deck plans I am thinking of booking a VE cabin on the Verandah deck. Has anyone been in these cabins? It seems that the lifeboats would be directly below us. Is that a problem- would it obscure our view in any way? Would a VD or VE cabin be a better choice? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll love the Noordam! We were in cabin VD4050 (upper promenade) from Rome via Monte Carlo, Barcelona, etc.. then Madeira back to Fort Lauderdale. Above the lifeboats (but not directly, look at deck plan), near the elevators; 100% ocean view; a beautiful room & convenient to everything.
You could call your TA or HAL to find out if any quoted room has an obstructed view- it's early & you can have your pick! The Mediterranean is pretty calm, you'll have a superb time @ any level & you'll find 17 days just fly by on a cruise. Be sure to let them know if you have a special occasion to celebrate, they always remember that.
One thing though, no W/D, it was $99 for our whole cruise or $20/bag as you much can cram into it.
You'll love the trip
Thank you so much for your reply. It sounds like you had a wonderful cruise. Thanks also for your tips about cabin choice. As you have just got off the Noordam can I ask you whether you chose early or late dining or anytime dining? I have heard pros and cons for all and wondering which to choose. Did you pre arrange the $99 laundry option or do that once you were on board? Also were there any shore excursions you really enjoyed?
Hi Phoebeann,
We did early dining as on most shore excursion days you're better off with early excursions(you'll have tons of them on Mediterranean- since we were on Journey to the New World going West probably all different ones) we enjoyed our tablemates but did also eat @ Lido's, anytime & elegant Pinnacle Grill- need reservations-also extra charge (too much food! but excellent esp. beef). Then you get to see early shows & get ready for the next day.
We signed up for $99 laundry on the day of cruise, just call; read your daily notes form ship.
I'll look up your itinerary to see were Your Ports are. Be sure to check this site boards on ports-so informative! You'll find blogs on this site with pictures/suggestions if you want to do your own thing/wander around in port.
best to you!

My apologies for my tardy response but thank you so much for your help. My only excuse is that I have been busy planning my pre and post cruise part of my trip. Next challenge is to organise getting from Rome to the port. Any suggestions anyone?

When we were in Rome in May for our cruise on the Eurodam we took the train from the airport to Termini in Rome where we could walk to our b&b. We just bought the tickets at the airport. We stayed at the b&b (Momi) to tour Rome for a couple days before the cruise. To get from Rome to the port we took the train again from Termini to the station in Civitavechia. We then walked to the port (it was a bit of a distance). If you take the train just check carefully times and platforms because we had trouble finding someone that could speak English the mornng we were trying to get on the right train to Civitavechia. As it turned out we had only minutes to spare. On our next cruise we booked transfers through HAL because I didn't want to go through that again without my husband (it will be just my son and I). The trains do not have wide corridors so it can be hard to get on and off if you have large suitcases and there are several flights of steps so you have to be able to carry your bags up and down them. Like I said it was fine when we did it in May but decided it would be a lot less of a hassle to go with the transfers this time around.

Trains to port from Rome run all day long . There is no first class. Buy your ticket at Termini and head for tracks 23-24 ,it cost 4.50e one way. Easy on easy off. I think the trains run about 40 min. Watch out for pickpockets and people who want to lift your bags on to the train . I let two kids take my bags to the upper deck on the train and they tried to get me for 5e , I gave them 2e, it was worth it for me but if you do this stay alert or your bags might disappear. If you are going to Florence ,on Sundays women ride free ,first class SMN-Rome..64e . I don't know if this is every Sunday but it worked for me.....good luck ciao

Noordam features museum-quality art such as an oil painting of the city of Utrecht painted in 1842, as well as contemporary art like the series of photographs of music greats Dizzy Gillespie and BB King. One of the most valuable pieces of furniture on board the ship is a remarkable inlaid chest flanked by carved wooden 17th-century Baroque columns. Made in Germany in 1885, the chest is inlaid with ebony and precious stones. Enjoy an onboard IPod self-guided tour of the complete Noordam art collection. The cruise line separates the different categories (Inside, Oceanview, Balcony) into subcategories. The only difference in the subcategories is usually location on the ship. The detail above shows subcategory color, category name, and subcategory name. For detailed information, mouse over a cabin on the deck plans and a pop up window will appear. You will find diagrams, pictures and information about that cabin category including square footage and features. Holland America uses letters to denote the type of cabins. Interior cabins start with the letter I to N with I being the more desired location. Oceanview cabins start with the letter C to H with C being the more desired location. Verandah cabins start with the letter V followed by the letter A to H with A being the more desired location. Vista cabins start with the letter A or B with A being the more desired type of Verandah caibn. This may be followed by another letter A to P with A being the more desired location. Suites start with the letter S followed by the letter A to Z with A being the more desired location and/or suite type. The only exception to the above is if the second letter is Q. That stands for spa and a more desired cabin because of its perks. There are also a couple unique codes. OO stands for a single oceanview cabin (sleeps one). FA or FB are family oceanview cabins with FA being more desired.
