In ancient times it was said that all roads lead to Rome… but in your case, the seaport of Civitavecchia is your road to Rome. Get there and you’ll find out what made the place so popular. The Vatican's Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, the Colosseum with its lurid history, and the Trevi Fountain — where a tossed coin promises your return — are not to be missed on any visit to the so-called “Eternal City,” one of the cradles of civilization. Take a walking tour of Rome’s many historical landmarks and enjoy the lively sidewalk cafés, ending the day alla romana strolling through the atmospheric Centro Storico.

  • Look up at Michelangelo’s frescos on the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling.
  • Climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica dome for panoramic views of Rome.

Rome (Civitavecchia) Cruises

For centuries, Rome ruled much of Europe, building a vast empire from the power of emperors. More than 2,500 years of history live in the city’s streets. Ancient structures recall those heady days when the cheers of 80,000 spectators roared from the Colosseum, citizens mingled in the Forum and senators asked the gods for guidance at the Pantheon. Along with the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica, this rich pocket of Italy is one of the world’s greatest repositories of history and civilization.

Embark on a full-day trip to Rome from the Port of Civitavecchia and take in the splendor of the Eternal City at a much lower price than the tours offered by the cruise lines.

Colosseum and Arch of Constantine

Description

You'll meet your guide in the port of Civitavecchia , and hop on a coach headed toward Rome. Enjoy the scenic landscape of the province of Rome for a little over an hour until you get to the city centre.

Once we arrive at the Eternal City, we'll begin this tour of Rome's most popular tourist attractions. We'll see some amazing spots such as  St. Peter's Square in the Vatican , where we'll hop off, and walk through the spectacular square in front of St. Peter's Basilica . Inside, there are masterpieces such as Michelangelo's Pieta .

We'll also stop off at set off on a sightseeing tour of the Castel Sant'Angelo , the Tiber Island , the Cayo Cestio   Pyramid , the Baths of Caracalla , the Circus Maximus , the Palatine ,  Aventine Hill , and the Arch of Constantine .

Of course, a tour of Rome wouldn't be complete without stopping at the Colosseum , where we'll walk to visit significant places around the building, as well as the Roman Forum  and Trajan's Column . Nearby, we'll see Piazza Venezia and the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II .

In addition to Ancient Rome, we'll have to visit the Trevi Fountain , the  Agrippa   Pantheon  and  Piazza Navona , and the Spanish Steps , all located within walking distance. You'll love it!

In the afternoon, we'll return to the port in Civitavecchia, arriving in plenty of time to board the cruise ship.

This tour will be carried out with an English–speaking guide depending on the availability on the day you've chosen for your tour.

For those on the  MSC Musica Cruise , return to Rome will be earlier than others, at 2:45 pm instead of 4 pm. This is to give those passengers time, as their boat leaves at 5 pm.

Rome Shore Excursions Highlight the Best Sights of the Eternal City

Rome, Italy’s reputation as the Eternal City will certainly assert itself on any of the fabulous Rome shore excursions you can book when your Mediterranean cruise ship is docked at Civitavecchia, the port of Rome. One of the most visited and beloved cities in the world for history buffs, culture mavens, food lovers, and romantics of all ages, Rome’s charms are many and splendid as you will discover whether you choose to walk or tour in a motor coach, be your own guide or take an expert-guided tour.

If you’re flying into Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci airport to embark on your Mediterranean cruise from Rome , you can book guided Rome cruise tours that take you by motor coach to the heart of the city to see the most iconic sights: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and the Arch of Constantine. Then, see St. Peter’s Basilica and walk St. Peter’s Square at your own pace, stopping if you like for a snack at a nearby restaurant or for your first delicious taste of gelato before motoring to the port. Post-cruise, you can schedule Rome shore excursions that shuttle you to the city for a day of world-class sightseeing, including special viewings of celebrated artworks at the Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel.

For a step-back-in-time experience, book an extensive tour of the Colosseum that includes the rarely seen underground area where the lions were housed, and where gladiators awaited their chance to fight to the death in front of thousands of cheering Romans. Walk the Palatine Hill, the centermost of the Seven Hills of Rome, and view the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus from above.

If you’re a DIY kind of tourist, there are Rome shore excursions that will transport you the city, and map in hand, let you explore Rome as you please. Spend time discovering cultural and historical Rome: toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, take a selfie after treading the Spanish Steps, browse the upscale shops nearby, and enjoy an espresso as you people-watch at a sidewalk cafe.

When in Rome, food and wine lovers may enjoy country excursions to an Etruscan-era town or a lakeside village where you’ll meet local farmers and artisans, and tour their farm, olive grove, or vineyard. Enjoy hearing first-hand how olives become olive oil or grapes become wine, then sample local fare, including olive oils, wines, honey, and bruschetta .

Twilight over River Tibor and the dome of San Pietro, Vatican, Rome, Lazio, Italy. Visit the Rome forum on a Holland America Line European cruise.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

When you embark on a cruise to Rome with Holland America Line you experience its bustling modernism along with its rich history. You can walk in the footsteps of emperors, have coffee in Renaissance piazzas and see contemporary art all in one afternoon. Your sightseeing time in Rome begins at the nearby port of Civitavecchia, a seaside town with roots that stretch back to the Etruscan era. Take note of the Forte Michelangelo (both Bramante and Michelangelo had a hand in its design), and the lungomare , a lively stretch along the sea with beach clubs, bars and restaurants.

Once in the Eternal City you can fill your day with museums, churches, archaeological sites, traditional trattorias, artisan shops and, of course, gelato. The Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are Rome's superstar attractions, but there are plenty of quieter gems to explore. For food lovers there are the markets in Campo de' Fiori or the slightly farther flung Testaccio. The hip neighborhood of Monti, next to the Colosseum, has a vibrant piazza scene and boutique shopping, while the Villa Borghese offers a green oasis with a view towards Saint Peter’s Basilica and the masterpiece-filled Galleria Borghese. Although Rome might not have been built in one day, you'll certainly be able to see its highlights on our Rome cruises along with the top things to do there in 24 hours.

I'm so glad we decided on this type of tour. Our driver, Franco, couldn't have been a better choice. He obviously knows his way around Rome, and knows some sights to show guests they may have missed, including the "keyhole" and a beautiful stop that overlooked the city. He was informative, and , more importantly, his relaxed style made him very pleasant to be with. Also, he brought us to a really nice restaurant when it was time for lunch. Much thanks to him and your company- it was a very nice day. Read more Written November 12, 2023

  • 1rarebird 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great day off the beaten path My cruise ship cancelled their excursion to Ostia Antica, leaving me in dry dock so to speak. That turned out to be a good thing though when I booked it with stefanorometours. Instead of a busload of travelers, it was just the driver/tour guide and myself. Having already done the Rome city thing before, these sites are also historically important and more like cities of the dead. Amazing to experience. I had a great day with Andrea, who was punctual, friendly and very knowledgeable. It was a great time and if you have the chance, ask for him when booking with this company. The staff are always professional, on time and provide the excellent experience you want from day trips or transfers between cities. It’s really important that the driver know there area and can add information to boost the experience and every trip this has occurred for us. I very much recommend this agency. Recently I forgot my wallet in the back seat during a day excursion and I called the office, they immediately contacted our driver who found my wallet and returned it to me within twenty minutes. This is just another excellent example of their professionalism and their goal of providing the perfect customer experience. Read more Written October 31, 2022

We had a long day to see everything but we did not get exhausted because of the care our driver took getting us to the best places near each site. Would definitely use Stefano Rome Tours again. • sinah542 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A smooth ride We had a moderately conplex request to bring a large group from Cortona to three locations in Rome. Our driver, Orlando, was a total gem. He was friendly, careful with the bags, funny, and just the right level between getting somewhere efficiently but not scaring anyone. This is a difficult balance to find in Italy, so we were certainly glad that Orlando was our driver. The van was clean and spacious. Organizing the trip was easy and I would definitely work with Stefano Rome Tours again! Pricing was competitive as well. Read more Written July 5, 2022
  • Strongbox53 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An alternative tour We had taken previous tours with Stefano Rome Tours - once in Rome , so had seen all the main popular attractions so we asked our driver to show us other parts of Rome. After picking us up from our ship,he took us to see St Pauls Basilica as well as the catacombs. He then took us to a local market before taking us on the Appian Way. Afterwards, he took us to the excellent Trastevere area for dinner which had many restaurants on tiny cobbled streets. . Cesare was our excellent driver who was knowledgeable and professional. Would book another tour with Stefano when back in Italy. Read more Written May 23, 2022

  • listar136 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Outstanding pre-cruise tour to Lake Bracciano, castello Orsini, and Ceri We experienced a wonderful tour with Stefano Tours prior to our cruise departing from Rome. The transportation was spacious and the drivers knowledgeable and friendly. We traveled to Lake Bracciano, where we were able to dip our feet in the water. We toured Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, then enjoyed a drive through the countryside. Our driver was able to give us lots of info on not just the historical aspects of the area, but also on current farming and produce topics. Lunch was at the amazing Trattoria la Rocco in Ceri. The food was delicious and the views were incredible. We were dropped right at the ship to begin our cruise. I can’t say enough about the service and friendliness of Stefano Tours. • DCEowner 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Dream Way to get a Taste of Tuscany on Rome Transfer to Cruise Boat This tour was the perfect way to get a taste of Tuscany while also getting transport from our Rome hotel to the cruise port!! Since there were 8 of us, we were picked up at our hotel in two brand new (or like new) Mercedes vans. We were taken to Bracciano Castle and we basically had the castle to ourselves to explore! It was fun to see the displays and have the run of a hilltop castle. We then went down to the volcanic lake to watch the swans and ducks and put our feet in the water. Our next stop was a hilltown church in Ciri and "heaven"...Oops... I mean Trattoria La Rocca!!! We basked in the sunshine on a balcony at the most perfect restaurant overlooking the restaurant's vinyards. The food and staff were amazing. We especially loved the garlic bread, pillow pizza appetizer, gnocchi and boar! Our drivers were kind and informative! We arrived at the port on schedule. THIS DAY COULD HAVE NOT BEEN BETTER!!! Rome River Cruise

If Rome’s traffic puts you off taking sightseeing by bus, how about a peaceful cruise down the river?

The Tiber River, or Tevere in Italian, is the third longest river in Italy and is famous for being one of the defining characteristics of Rome. Because of its historical importance and worldwide fame, a Rome river cruise could be a fantastic idea for those who want a break from touring this stunning ancient city on foot.

The Tiber River

The river Tiber divides the ancient city of Rome, with all its historic monuments , from the Vatican and Trastevere neighborhoods .

The river has been part of some of Rome’s dramatic moments of history. Romulus and Remus were found by the She-Wolf by the Tiber, and at least one emperor and pope were disposed of in her waters.

Until the 19 th century, the river was a major feature of the city, flooding annually and filling the city with water. You can still see signs around the city showing the level the water reached in different years – there’s a beautiful Medieval one from 1277 on Via Arco dei Banchi, close to Castel Sant’Angelo .

Then high embankments were built, and the river today is mostly seen from the bridges above.

But at each bridge , there are stairs down to the river. The Vatican side is popular with joggers and cyclists, and in the summer, bars and food stalls line the riverbanks as part of the Estate Romana. The other side is less well-kept, and few people use it.

Rome by Boat

Taking a cruise down the river is a great way to escape the crowds for a while. In summer, the cooler air can be a welcome relief from the heat and traffic of the city streets. The boat is also a quick way to get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere .

Types Of Cruises

Hop-on, hop-off.

If you don’t want to be on your feet all day, the boat is a great transport option. While there are lots of buses in the center, there’s also a lot of traffic, and moving can be a slow, sweaty process. With the boat, you can get from Piazza del Popolo to Trastevere in about 20 minutes.

There are audio guides available in different languages, but my booking confirmation didn’t explain that you have to bring your own headphones (none of the other passengers had been told this either).

There’s also a single trip option which will save you a few euros and take you once in each direction.

Daily from 10.00 to 17.00

Boats pass every 30 minutes.

Aperitivo Cruise

When in Rome, you will quickly learn to love the Italian habit of an aperitivo before dinner. Instead of having dinner at the usual time, book a cruise down the river with a glass of wine and traditional snacks. You’ll appreciate the cool air and quieter atmosphere away from the city traffic while you float down the Tiber.

The ticket for this cruise includes a 24hr ticket for the boat, so you can spend the next day hopping on and off to visit riverside monuments like the Ara Pacis , Campo dè Fiori or do some shopping on the exclusive Via Giulia.

18.00 Thursday – Sunday

From Castel Sant’Angelo pier

Sushi Cruise

For a more international drinks experience, the Sushi Cruise comes with fresh sushi and the cocktail of your choice. The leisurely trip down the river takes 75 minutes and also includes a 24hr ticket so you can come back the next day.

18.00 Monday – Wednesday

From Castel Sant’Angelo Pier

Practical Information

Reaching the river.

The Tiber has a very high embankment. There are steps down to the river close to each of the bridges. Most of them are very steep, though the ones in Trastevere are easier to walk down.

The steps to the Trastevere boat stop

If you aren’t able to walk down the steps, there is a ramp on Lungotevere Ripa, near Porta Sublicio, about a 10-minute walk from Tiber Island.

Most of the steps to the river are steep and not always well kept

Where To Get The Boat

The main stop is at Trastevere. Here you’ll find a ticket office in case you haven’t bought your ticket online. This is the only stop on the Trastevere/Vatican side of the river.

cruise tour rome

To reach the stop, you can cross the river at Ponte Garibaldi or Ponte Cestio (the island bridge). There are steps to the river next to both bridges. Take either of them, and you’ll find the departure point is almost in front of you when you get to the bottom.

If you are coming by public transport , take the no.8 tram or H bus and get off at Piazza Belli, then cross the road to the river.

cruise tour rome

The Trastevere stop

There are 3 other stops, though 2 of them are request stops. If anyone is waiting or asks to get off at Ponte Sisto or Castel Sant’Angelo, the boat will dock. Otherwise, it continues until it reaches Ponte Cavour.

After picking up any passengers, the boat turns around and heads back to Trastevere, this time without stopping. The direct journey takes about 20 minutes.

If you want to get on at any of the other stops, be warned that the signposting to find them is almost non-existent. There are no signs at street level, and the signs are so small you can’t see them from the other side of the river.

Signs at the stops are minimal

What To See

You don’t actually see much from the river because of the high embankment and the many trees that line the roads on either side. There are no real sights until the river bends close to the Vatican, then you’ll see St. Peter’s at a distance (it’s not next to the river), Castel Sant’Angelo , and the angels on the bridge outside.

Experience On Board

The experience is very relaxing. The crew collects your ticket or takes a photo of your online booking form and provides you with a receipt, then you are free to sit inside or upstairs.

Inside seating

The boats are not modern. There are benches at the side upstairs and downstairs and additional plastic seating (and tables downstairs).

The multilingual audio guide is built into the benches, but headphones are not provided. If you want to bring your own, you will need headphones with a jack connection.

There is a small restroom on board.

The restroom could be a bit of a squeeze

  • Don’t expect a sightseeing tour. Most monuments aren’t by the river as it used to flood a lot. However, it is a nice way to move across the center quickly and calmly.
  • Bring headphones with a jack connection if you want to use the audio guide.
  • The steps to the river at Trastevere aren’t too difficult, but be warned they are steep and quite narrow at other points. Particularly if you have a pushchair or heavy bags, you might struggle.
  • Stop at the kiosk between the steps and the bridge to Tiber Island to try the best grattachecca in the city. These summer drinks are the Roman version of a Slushy. A massive block of ice is shaved by hand as you wait with a special tool, then the ice is covered in syrup and topped with fruit.

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
