History of Dalhousie and surroundings

dalhousie trek yhai

  • It is fondly known as the Singing Hill.
  • A view of Gobind Sagar Lake from Dilniwas, Upper Bakrota, Dalhousie
  • Upper Bakrota – The highest area in Dalhousie, it has a number of estates, a residential school, and an Army barracks at the top. The area is circled by a road called Bakrota Walk, on the way to Khajjiar which ends at Alah Water Tank. It was the preferred destination of the landed gentry of Punjab during the Raj, now populated by similar residents from the new India. Some of the houses are worth seeing, but are mostly on private gated estates.
  • Church – St John?s church  This Protestant Church in Dalhousie is a throwback to the Victorian era and holds great historical significance as the first religious site to be built here, dating all the way back to 1863.This one is equally magnificent and ancient, built more than a century ago. A perfect example of Victorian architecture.
  • What to buy: Two main markets— one run by the local Himachalis and the other by Tibetan-immigrants! Both of them has their own share of exquisite artifacts. But one should not forget to bargain to some real great extent! Don’t forget to bring back home, a speciality of this place— dried-blossoms of some local trees, which are varnished, and sold in the local markets! They are not very expensive, and are generally hardy to survive the strains of long journey and packing/unpacking! CHAMBA ,(nearby MANGLA CAMP) has excellent quality leather goods.
  • Caf? Dalhousie is one of the quaintest and, perhaps, the oldest cafes in town. A tiny place on the lower floor of HHo el Dalhousie, it is perfect for a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs, peanut butter toasts and a coffee. An evening stroll in the Gandhi Chowk market is incomplete without a masala chai and popcorn bucket from here. All th e food at the cafe is made to order. While the service is slow, the food quality and amazing views from its inside leaves little room for complaints. A no-frills place, Cafe Dalhousie sees a lot of people walking in for its old-world charm.

————————————————————————————————- Suggestions by last year Dalhousie trekker Ms.Anubhuti Rastogi

1. Get a hair dryer to dry their things in case of emergency. 2. One light blanket if possible.3. Add directions to base camp from bus stop as many locals around don’t know it exactly.

Govt. Youth Hostel – Dalhousie

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India

History of Youth Hostel Movement

The Youth Hostel movement was first initiated by a German school teacher, Mr. Richard Schirrmann way back in 1909. He set up the first Youth Hostel in 1912 in Altena, Germany, in his own school building to provide convenient accommodation to students who were involved in outdoor activities. Subsequently, the Youth Hostel movement started growing and as a result, the Youth Hostels’ Association was formed in Germany in 1919. The initiation of the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) was an outcome of the first International Youth Hostel Federation Conference held in Amsterdam in 1932. With this, the Youth Hostel Movement gained momentum and more and more Youth Hostels began to be established in Europe with hygienic stay and food facilities.

The Scenario of Youth Hostels in India

The Government of India has been extending its support to promote the Youth Hostel Movement in India since 1966. The Youth Hostels Scheme was formulated as per the guidelines prescribed in the manual of the International Youth Hostel Federation. To date, 83 Government Youth Hostels have been constructed all over India.

In India, the Youth Hostels Scheme has been functioning as a joint venture between the Central and State Governments. While the Central Government bears the cost of construction, the State Governments provide fully developed land free of cost, with water, electricity and approach roads. After the construction is completed, the hostels are handed over to the State Governments for management. These youth hostels are looked after by a manager and a warden with support from a Hostel Management Committee.

Motive of the Youth Hostel

The main purpose of establishing Youth Hostels was to provide a “ HOME AWAY FROM HOME” to travelers at affordable means. Youth Hostels are unlike hotels, where guests merely pay and stay. In a Youth Hostel, the atmosphere is more friendly and one is never made to feel like a stranger. The wardens in the hostels are friendly and can be approached to discuss problems and to seek advice, thus making the hoteliers feel at home. The hostellers, in return, may be expected to help the wardens to keep the Hostel clean and undertake some housekeeping responsibilities if required.

This kind of arrangement not only facilitates budget and low-cost travel but also provides various learning opportunities through travel and outdoor activities. Young people on educational tours, as well as excursions to historical and cultural centers, get plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded people, experience diversity at all levels, and consequently, gain tremendously from these kinds of youth hostels on both the economic and personal front.

The accommodation provided in these hostels is in the form of dormitories, which are separate for both men and women. There is a dining hall with self-service, a common room or lounge where the hoteliers can meet, mingle and engage in discussions on topics that are of common interest. Given the informal atmosphere of these hostels, they not only serve as a place for recreation but also become places for fostering informal education and nurturing new bonding and ties.

Some of the salient features of the Youth Hostel are:-

  • It is a non-religious, non-political and non-commercial unit without any discrimination pertaining to race, color, gender, caste, creed, or social background.
  • Overnight charges are kept to the minimum so that the youth with limited means can also avail the stay facility.
  • Its functioning is as per the norms, rules and regulations laid down by International Youth Hostel Federation with minimal variationsdepending on the country of location.
  • It promotes travel among the youth and also encourages various youth related activities and programmes.
  • It cannot be used for political party meetings and social functions like marriages.

In India, these youth hostels are managed by a Hostel Management Committee constituted by the State/Union Territory as per the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The Youth Hostel, Dalhousie

Dr. Karan Singh the then Union Minister of Tourism sanctioned the construction of the Youth Hostel at Dalhousie based on the request of the Himachal Pradesh Government and its foundation stone was laid by Smt. Sarojini Mahishi the Minister of State Tourism and Civil Aviation on 12th August, 1972.

Youth Hostel Dalhousie is the smallest built-in area. The main building has a plinth area of 1600 sq. ft. compared to 5000/10,000 sq. ft. in most other Hostels. It is also one of the oldest hostels. Hence, this is one of the prestigious Hostels under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

The Youth Hostel at Dalhousie is a 92-bed hostel and to date students/youth of 22 states and 48 countries have visited and stayed here.  A statistic shows that around 15,000 visitors visit and stay in this hostel every year. Adventure activities and other national-level programs of this hostel receive good participation from all over the country. This was the only government Youth Hostel to be linked to an International online booking network. Of all the Government Youth Hostels in India, there is only 6 Govt. Youth Hostels that are ISO certified and the Govt. Youth Hostel Dalhousie is one of them.

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — A drone attacked a skyscraper in central Moscow early Tuesday for the second time in around 48 hours, damaging the building’s facade and further underscoring the Russian capital’s vulnerability. Russian authorities accused Ukraine of staging the assault.

An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement.

Russian officials have claimed that the repeated attacks on the capital region reflect failures in Ukraine’s counteroffensive to recapture Russian-occupied territory. Zelenskyy said over the weekend that “the war is gradually coming back to Russian territory,” but he stopped short of taking responsibility.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and jammed another, sending it crashing into a skyscraper and damaging the building’s facade. The attack happened in a business district of high-rise office buildings known as Moscow City, west of the Kremlin.

The Crimean Peninsula's balmy beaches have been vacation spots for Russian czars and has hosted history-shaking meetings of world leaders. And it has been the site of ethnic persecutions, forced deportations and political repression. Now, as Russia’s war in Ukraine enters its 18th month, the Black Sea peninsula is again both a playground and a battleground. (AP Photo, File)

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone crashed into the same building that was damaged Sunday in a similar attack. IQ-Quarter, located 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) from the Kremlin, houses multiple government agencies, including the headquarters of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The mayor said the attack on Tuesday did not result in any casualties.

It wasn’t clear why the same building was hit twice in a row. In both attacks, the Russian military said the drones that hit the skyscraper were jammed before crashing, which elicited questions from even the staunchest supporters of the Kremlin.

Margarita Simonyan, chief editor of the state-funded TV channel RT, said in a social media post that “a drone hitting the same tower for the second time in a row, where three federal ministries are located, at least requires explaining the comments that the electronic warfare downed them all.”

Asked about how protected the Russian capital is, given that supposedly jammed drones hit the same building, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov redirected the question to the Defense Ministry, saying only that “the threat exists and measures are being taken.”

Sobyanin said the drone that struck the building Tuesday hit the 21st floor, one of the floors housing the Economic Development ministry. Photos from the scene showed several panels of glass missing, exposing the charred insides of the building. According to the mayor, 150 square meters (about 1,600 square feet) of the building’s glass facade were damaged.

Russian news agency Interfax cited Darya Levchenko, an adviser to the economic development minister, as saying that the ministry’s staff worked from home Tuesday while damage to the office was assessed.

The Russian military also said Ukrainian forces tried to attack two of its warships in the Black Sea, using maritime drones. Three drones targeted two patrol vessels, Sergei Kotov and Vasily Bykov, 340 kilometers (210 miles) southwest of the Russian-controlled city of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula , the Defense Ministry reported. All three drones were destroyed, the report said.

The governor of the Sevastopol region, Mikhail Razvozhaev, said a drone was shot down about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of the city on Tuesday evening, causing a brush fire.

The attacks on Moscow and Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014, follow a deadly Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih , Zelenskyy’s hometown in central Ukraine.

Monday’s strike partially destroyed a residential building and killed seven people. Dozens more were wounded.

Russia’s land and sea border with Ukraine spans more than 2,200 kilometers (1,400 miles), meaning that much of the line separating the two countries is not covered by defense radar, which creates an opening for drones.

“Depending on where they are launched from, if there is a way to get through the initial line of defenses, then there will probably be a very poor ability to track them in real time,” said professor Justin Bronk, an expert in military air power and technology at the Royal United Services Institute, a defense think tank in London.

The most advanced defense systems around Moscow “are typically optimized for ballistic missile defense and are looking at targets and objects which are coming in at extremely high speeds and from very high angles,” Bronk said.

Unlike ballistic missiles, drones can fly low and slow. That presents a challenge for radar systems, which scan higher altitudes and filter out slow-moving objects such as birds.

In other developments Tuesday, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, with Iranian-made Shahed drones , according to Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov.

One drone struck a three-story building at an educational institution in the Saltivka district, partially destroying the top two floors of the building, as well as the roof. No one was inside at the time.

Three more drone strikes hit the area of a sports complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. A two-story building in the complex was partially damaged, and a 63-year-old security guard was wounded, according to Syniehubov.

Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson and hit a medical facility, according to regional Gov. Roman Mrochko, killing a doctor and wounding one nurse.

“A young, talented doctor was killed, who was on his first day of work after internship. It was his first working day, which ended without even starting,” Tetiana Karchevych, Kherson region health department head, said at the site of the attack.

Ukraine’s presidential office reported Tuesday morning that at least 12 civilians had been killed in the country over the previous 24 hours, and 104 people injured.

The office reported that Monday’s attack on Kryvyi Rih killed seven people, including a 10-year-old girl, making it one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in recent weeks. Russian rockets struck a residential high-rise building and a university building in the attack, which also wounded 81 people, including seven children.

Hanna Arhirova in Kyiv, Ukraine, and Yuras Karmanau in Berlin, contributed to this report.
