Brisbane alternative rock band Dead Letter Circus are rapidly rising to the forefront of the Australian music scene with their unique and gargantuan sound. They released their debut album ‘This is a Warning’ in 2010 and went straight to number one on the Australian Music charts, the single catalyst of better things to come. Later that year, they secured support slots for Muse and Linkin Park on the stadium tours playing to thousands of people. As a socially aware band, they embarked upon a 21 date Australian tour raising awareness of the danger linked to coal seam gas. Touring the world and with sold out national tours, Dead Letter Circus have amassed a huge and dedicated following. Whether playing small intimate venues or massive arenas, DLC put their all into every performance making it a night the audience will never forget. Opening with ‘Space on the Wall’ kicks of the show with explosive and electric energy as singer Kim Benzie’s syrupy sweet vocals hypnotises the audience before he passes the microphone into the crowd. The atmosphere is all kinds of epic with raw sentiments on display as the audience passionately sing back word for word. Dead Letter Circus perform with charisma oozing from every pore and incredibly mesmerising showmanship - they’ll definitely keep you coming back for more.

Wow what a night! DLC were absolutely amazing! Kim's vocals were outstanding live and the bands performance equalled him with their skill and musical brilliance. I am a HUGE DLC fan; their sound is intoxicating and lyrically I feel they touch my soul. Kim is so passionate; I adore his convictions and the messages he imparts through their music. I literally can't wait for their next concert!! Thanks guys for an incredible gig!

PS. Venue 170 Russell was also great too.

PSS. Recommend more people come out to see DLC! Lets support this amazing Australian rock band!!!

Vocals are definitely not even close to what they are on the record. I was pretty disappointed as dead letter is a band I’ve wanted to see for a while and I was shocked after the first song. Once they played ‘one step’ I was ready to leave because it was just ruining the song for me. I wouldn’t see these guys play again but I will still listen to their music as it is much better on the record than it is live.

Great band, but where let down by poor sound, l left after the 4th song. The band on before dead letter, there sound was fine. THE Beer deluxe is not the best place for bands. Go elsewhere to play next time.

This Tour Is Personal: Periphery Announce Fall North American Tour

dead letter circus tour

Periphery have announced a fall North American tour with Born of Osiris, Dead Letter Circus and Twelve Foot Ninja, dubbed “This Tour Is Personal.”

You can check out all the confirmed dates — and a new video advancing the tour — below.

The tour, which is sponsored by Jackson Guitars, ToonTrack, Guitar World and All In Merch, kicks off October 11 in Baltimore and wraps up November 20 in New York City.

“We have been having a hard time keeping the details of our upcoming headlining tour package under wraps because of how excited we are about it," says Periphery guitarist Misha Mansoor. "This is mainly because for this trek we will be joined by Born of Osiris, Dead Letter Circus and Twelve Foot Ninja. We felt that having those three bands would add some nice variety, virtuosity and, of course, virility to the package.

“We will be doing some different tiered VIP packages for this headliner as well, with more specific details on those in the coming weeks. You should make it out to a show because we have not one, but two, Australian bands on this package and we all know what a rarity that is. Also, this will be the last tour on this current album cycle for us, so we won't be back around for awhile. See ya there.”

“Holy Sh*t. We’re Gonna Do An Album”: Dead Letter Circus Talk Stunning Themselves With Their “Personal” New LP

By Sally McMullen

Only a year after the release of their 10th anniversary acoustic album The Endless Mile , Dead Letter Circus had no intention of dropping a record this year. But it would appear that the gods of rock n’ roll had other plans. Without the pressure of deadlines or expectations, frontman Kim Benzie couldn’t contain the creative floodgates if he wanted to. As a result, DLC have produced their most effortless album yet.

Out now, the self-titled record is 10 tracks of harrowing self reflections and social commentary. Tunes like ‘The Real You’ pine for the truth beyond the masks we wear on social media, while others like ‘We Own The Light’ explore mental health and the fragility of traditional masculinity.

In the past, DLC have cloaked their lyrics in sweeping metaphors, but Benzie took a more literal approach when writing their fifth record. To compliment the straight-shooting subject matter, the Brisbane quintet also pulled back on digital production to let their signature heavy hooks and towering riffs take the lead.

To celebrate the new record, the boys are kicking off a massive Australian tour in November this year. Touring stages across Bunbury, Margaret River and Perth through to Adelaide, Canberra, Wollongong and Sydney, DLC fans should have no trouble catching the boys to hear the new record in the flesh.

Ahead of the tour and album release, we had a chat with Benzie about the DLC brotherhood and how they used a tactic titled ‘true movement’ to create their most authentic record yet.

Music Feeds: How does it feel right now in the calm before the storm of the record release?

Kim Benzie: Yeah, good! Calm (laughs). We’re psyched!

MF: Dead Letter Circus has been described as the most organic album of the band’s career. What makes you say that?

KB: It just came out really pure and easy. It was an easy album to write. In the band, the chemistry between us is just at an all-time high. When we write together, we’re just really committed in the sense that we’re a really awesome team. We just jam for hours upon hours and then the album happened.

We didn’t really do much afterwards. Sometimes you might put synth layers in and refine it over and over, but we didn’t do any of that. We just jammed it, wrote it, recorded it and then it was done. It was a really painless experience. Whereas sometimes you might get to the end of your studio time and you don’t think the song is perfect yet, so you go off to fix it. But we didn’t have to do any fixing. Everything flowed really well. So it was pretty epic.

MF: Did you go into the studio with stacks of songs prepared, or did it all come out of these studio sessions?

KB: Well, how it works is I generally create a pool of ideas that are really simplistic vocal lines with maybe a synth or hook of guitar or something. I find the first part of the story. I’ll spend a month carving out those ideas. It was really weird because we’re about a year ahead of our usual schedule, because we did an acoustic album last year. But I called up one of the guys and said “Man, I’ve got the album!” and after giving it a listen, he was like “How did that happen?!”. We convinced the other guys to book a room and try to do a song, and we did ‘The Real You’ I think and everyone went “Holy shit. We’re gonna do an album” (laughs).

We spent two weeks on pre-production to jam everything and then we just started executing the album. All up from conception to end, nothing existed three months before.

MF: Wow. Is the process usually that fast for you guys?

KB: Well, I was stunned. When I was doing my part at the start, all of the songs were just coming out so fast and they all had the most stupid names because I didn’t have time to think about them (laughs). It was a really magical time. And then in the studio with the guys, they’re just such magnificent jammers. Just watching them free-forming for hours and exploring the possibilities of the songs was really awesome.

MF: Was there also less pressure creating this album because you were following a creative impulse rather than meeting a deadline?

KB: We write our albums to please ourselves first and we’re lucky enough that they resonate with other people. The band is not just a financial pursuit for us. It’s just a thing we get to be. And the first step of that involves us writing music together and if it was just that and we walked out with nothing else, I would almost pay for that experience of just getting to write those songs with the guys.

We’re not very good businessmen based on that statement I just made (laughs). We’re just in it for all of the right reasons. We want to make music and I want to write it with my bros and then the next step is I want to see people react to it and love it as much as we do.

MF: I think fans can hear when an album is inauthentic or being dictated by a label, so sticking to your guns is probably always going to be your best bet.

KB: Yeah, based on the strength of our songwriting, we’ve been propositioned by one of the biggest labels in the world to do exactly that. We wrote a song called ‘One Step’ and with a song like that, we got flown to America, we did all of these showcases. I won’t say with whom, but we showcased our way to the top of the music industry. Then we were presented with this path where it involved cutting out our producer Forrester (Savell), who we wrote that with. We were also asked to scrap everything but that song on the album. So to our manager’s horror at the time, we just said “No, that’s not who we are”.

Who knows what the world could’ve held in store for us or if we would’ve broken up by now? Or maybe we wouldn’t have been able to do it, because we’ve never written a song on command. But that’s just us through and through. We’re just here to make some awesome tunes and it’s great that people love it.

I’m in it for the moment and getting to make music with those four other dudes. And I guess it’s part of my legacy as well. We’re leaving something behind that will live forever and that someone can listen to and remember us by. You’re part of this movement where you’re creating music and we’re all creating history. Everyone who writes a song is doing that.

MF: Let’s talk about the record’s debut single ‘The Real You’. It’s about the masks we wear on social media, but can you tell me a bit more about the thought process behind the song?

KB: I think when I was writing the song I’d just gone to the shops or something and I felt like I was in a zombie phone apocalypse. And you know when there’s a couple online and they post the most gushy shit you’ve ever seen like “OMG! This person is my soul mate” and then they break up like three weeks later? And then you’re like “So it was all fake?!” (laughs). Something like that happened.

Technology is this incredible thing and it’s changed our lives. Whenever big things like that happen, there are cultural by-products as a result. For example, our parents, they lived through that age of convenience where everything is faster and cheaper. The legacy from that is that we have factory farming, for example, and the crazy animal cruelty to try to make McDonalds burgers cheaper and all of the things that created that culture. And we’re in this digital thing where we’re just guinea-pigging with our minds.

What I’m talking about in ‘The Real You’, is we’ve created this thing a way to communicate with each other but how we interact with it has become… How can I explain this properly? We’re taking 20 photos to get one good one so we can show people what we think we’re supposed to show when we’re not really showing our true selves.

I was reflecting on my own phone addiction as well. Like I just went to the shop and got to the traffic lights and I felt like I needed to pick up my phone because I needed to be stimulated. So from that I was wondering in 20 years what legacy will be from this?

So I was just thinking “Who is the real you anymore?”. It’s the true gift of your eternal friendships, the ones who get to see the real you and those people don’t really give a shit about all the other stuff. So it’s kind of multi-themed around all of that stuff. I think I was quite frustrated at the time I was writing that chorus. And back to the couple on social media, their happiness then made me question my own happiness because I don’t feel the need to gush like that about my wife on social media, you know? (laughs).

MF: On the topic of phone addictions and social media, how do you feel about fans filming gigs or watching shows through their phones?

KB: Well, at first you’d almost get annoyed that someone would be in the front row and they wouldn’t even be looking at you, they’d be looking through the phone. But then I lost that because sometimes people can’t be there and they’re filming for their best friend or something. But what I have noticed is that it was prolific for a while and then it died off. I think people are a bit more present and in the moment. So I don’t judge people if they’re filming at a show on their phone.

MF: This album also tackles issues like identity and mental health, can you tell me more about the inspirations behind the record?

KB: It’s the most personal one we’ve ever written. It’s all really first person. There were themes on the last album where we were on a bit of a revolution vibe and on this one we just came right back to the person and your own positive mental health, really? We just channel this stuff, really. Especially the lyrics. I write them really quick and get into this really awesome headspace, and I get this feeling or it’s like I can see the album writing itself and then I just let it come out.

I’ve done some writing for other people, so I guess I can craft a particular thing but when it comes to my own music, it’s best when it just comes out. I have a term ‘true movement’ to describe when there is no gap between the action and it happening. It’s like when you think about everything you do. Like when you see a cup and reach over to pick it up. There’s thought involved in that. Whereas in other moments, say when you’re having sex or whatever, you go into this animal mode where there’s almost no thought and there’s no gap in there for any type of corruption of the action. It’s just pure ‘true movement’. And that’s just the state I try to get into when I’m writing lyrics.

MF: You’re also doing a massive tour in November and December, including a bunch of regional shows. Is this just like a month-long road trip for you guys?

KB: Yeah! Well, if you’re talking to our wives and partners, it’s gonna be a lot of hard work (laughs). But on the down low between you and I and all your readers, it’s going to going to be fucking awesome! (laughs). When you go on tour, you try to convince your family “Nah we’re working. It’s a lot of hard work!” but really it’s just a lot of fun. We can’t wait!

Dead Letter Circus’s new self-titled album is out now & you can catch them touring it across the nation this November & December.

The Rockpit

INTERVIEW: Luke Williams – Dead Letter Circus

28 September 2018 The Rockpit

dead letter circus tour

Dead Letter Circus recently released their self-titled album, kicking off what the band describe as a new era in the band’s career. The new songs perfectly merges the quintet’s trademark combination of ethereal atmospherics and towering riffs. It just might be the band’s most political statement to date. Lyrically, the album strikes at the heart of what makes humans tick, and the insecurities and psychological foibles that can make us all so fragile. This is never more evident than in the band’s anthemic single ‘The Real You’, which sees frontman Kim Benzie examining the culture shift brought about by social media. We shot off a few questions to drummer Luke Williams about the new songs and what fans can expect for the rest of the year.

What was the creative process like for the new songs?

We basically replicated the process of our previous record ‘Aesthesis’ because it was such a smooth and enjoyable process. We again worked with Forrester Savell and Matt Bartlem as producers on the project. It was a 3 month undertaking from start to finish with the band writing for a month solid in Brisbane, then relocating to Studio Circuit For pre-production with producers for a month, then tracking for a month after that. It seems to be the best way of doing it for us now. We can condense it all down to that 3 month window and be totally stoked with the results.

What were some of the things you wanted to achieve with the release?

It’s always about us releasing our creative taps so to speak. In saying that, we always strive to achieve a coherent, expressive album with a dynamic journey for us as musicians, and our fans as listeners.

What kind of a response or feedback have you been getting from press and fans?

Responses have been fantastic so far!! Really blown away. You never know how people are going to receive something new, so it’s nice when a majority of the responses are positive. I’ll never read the you tube comments though….that would be asking for a vibe kill

Do you enjoy the process of creating? Are you someone who continually writes or does the best come out under a little gentle pressure?

As individuals, we’re always amassing the next bunch of ideas ready for the band to mold into full songs. When we decide to make a new record, everyone spills their ideas onto a metaphorical table, ready for the best ones to be picked as potential songs for the next record. Then the process takes on a life of its own and we end up with a record approx 3 months later.

What does it feel like as an artist waiting for the songs you’ve lived with for some time to get released to the fans? Is there a sense of excitement or a little panic in there too?

Both…naturally you want people to resonate with your creative endeavors, so there can be a touch of nail biting when it comes to them hearing it. In saying that, it’s always exciting to finally get it out into the world.

How does the new album compare to previous releases?

I always find these questions hard to answer…It’s just what we do, and we don’t look at the differences between records so much. It has music on it though…of that i can assure you

What were the lyrical themes and main inspirations of the songs?

Kim is exploring a variety of things again on this record. ‘The Real You’ is a look at how social media and the devices we view them on is  impacting our psyches. ‘The Armour You Own’ is about how life events shape our character and viewing the “bad” things that happen to us as armour builders.

For Kim, it’s always about his life experiences and his observations on how the world operates and the systems that we’ve created as humans to help us, that sometimes corrupt and turn against us. Also how we as humans have far more power than we give ourselves credit for and the ability we have to shape our own realities and turn this human experience into a positive rather than a negative.

Any favorite moments or songs from the album?

For myself and a few of the other guys, it would have to be ‘We Own The Light’ and ‘Home’.

Did you imagine how these songs would play out in a live situation?

When writing, we don’t really consider this. After the songs are written, we have to find a way to present them in a live context, sometimes that means altering arrangements.

dead letter circus tour

Dead Letter Circus will be embarking on a national tour across Australia hitting major cities and regional towns along the way. What can people expect on your upcoming tour?

A monster set of old and brand new songs.

How was the previous club run of shows back in June?

They were intentionally small and intimate to showcase the new batch of songs from the record. The love is definitely still there from the fans though, which is great to see.

How do you pick out a setlist and is that a difficult process?

It is getting increasingly difficult to pick songs as our catalogue grows. You have fans that want to see their favourite song, and sometimes we can’t please everyone, so yeah, it is getting harder to find the balance of pleasing all the fans and showcasing the new tunes.

What is your favorite song to play live?

As a drummer, probably a song like ‘Next In Line’ for its intensity and songs like ‘While You Wait’ for their groove.

Any favorite places to play live?

The Cambridge in Newcastle, The Forum in Melbourne, The Tivoli in Brisbane and The Metro in Sydney

Any stand out shows or personal highlights from a tour or show that you can share?

Man there’s way too many to list here. Touring has some unexpected highs and lows. Some of the best moments can be to 100 people in a sweaty club in America while the big arena shows can be sterile and uninspired. You never know what moment will lift you to unimaginable highs. Also, the hangs and people you meet can be as special as the shows. Touring is the tits.

dead letter circus tour

Take us back to the beginning of the band’s career, how did the band form and get started?

I wasn’t in the band when it started, but it was around 2006 in Brisbane. Kim and Stew who were playing together already put an ad in the street press for a drummer and eventually found Scott Davey and they basically poached Rob Maric (guitar) from another band in the same rehearsal facility. The rest as they say is history.

What have been your greatest challenges to date, and your favourite moments musically?

Losing members in sometimes spectacular fashion is definitely the worst part. As well, letting crew members go can be hard. Lawsuits for injured punters, label fights…there’s heaps of shit that can go wrong and it tests you. You think “I’m just trying to make fucking music here”, why is all this stuff happening? On the flip side, I’ve met some of my musical heroes on tour and got to share ideas with them. Played shows where I’ve left my body because I was having such a rad time, had my music mixed by some of the biggest engineers in the world who’ve worked on some of my favourite records…shit gets surreal sometimes!!!

With technology changing so much over the last few years and seemingly not slowing, and TV force-feeding us the lowest common denominator, what hope is there for rock & metal music?

The internet is killing tv…don’t worry about that. It’s exciting to be alive right now. Everything is evolving so quickly and we have the ability to consume anything we want at any time….rock and metal music included. People can share their new favourite artists and songs with all their friends and spread music that way. If it’s good, the internet will spread it…simple. Soon TV shows like ‘The Bachelor’ won’t exist…thank fuck….that trash will die a quick death due to its own inferiority

From what you’ve learned so far what is the most valuable advice you’ve been given so far as a musician?

Practice! Be critical of your own work and always strive for better. Embrace your flaws as platforms for improvement and see mistakes as stepping stones to the next evolution of yourself.

Who or what inspired you to be in a band and play music?

Watching video hits and Rage as a kid. Also, my parents used to have music on around the house all the time. That really tunes your ear into the awesomeness of music!!!

How do you feel about the current music scene right now?

We’ve got huge platforms for people to get their music out to the public and to advertise live shows and sell merch. If you’re good, you’ll get an audience. There’s no conspiracy to keep certain genres down or anything.

Do you believe music can still change the world?

Of course it can…It has and always will change the world. Imagine life without music….you can’t….because it has always been there, Influencing us on mostly subtle levels, but sometimes profound ones. When you watch a movie and are moved to tears, half of that is because of the accompanying music (a subtle level). People sometimes tell Kim stories of how DLC’s music helped them overcome suicidal thoughts, that’s a more profound kind of reaction. And that’s 2 examples, there’s a million other variations and varying levels.

If you could be a fly on the wall for the recording of any album in history, what album would it be?

Back In Black by ACDC. I bet they partied their arses off while making that record!!

What is the meaning of life?

We’re all data collectors for Source energy (God, Yahweh, Elohim, Allah). When the atoms of our bodies disappear and re-appear millions of times a second, they are feeding information they’ve collected back to the vacuum. A huge data collection so inconceivably massive it’ll break your head if you think about it too long. Or it could just be to eat a cheeseburger…who fucking knows.

Dead Letter Circus have ascended to the forefront of alternative rock, their fresh take striking a chord both locally and abroad. Their 2010 debut album ‘This is the Warning’ hit #2 on the national ARIA charts and spawned 6 radio singles on its way to passing the 35,000 sales mark. The record was voted by fans into triple j’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time, and Red Bull listed the band as one of the Top 11 Rock Acts in the world . But their live performance is where DLC have built their reputation – they’ve sold out multiple national tours in Australia, most recently filling rooms earlier this month on yet another run across the capitals of the country. They’ve played on festivals around the country including Big Day Out , Pyramid Rock , Breath Of Life , Festival of the Sun and many more. They’ve also found time to do stadium shows with Linkin Park and Muse , headline festivals in India and tour right across the USA, where their SXSW performances in 2012 helped them create waves across the world

With their sophomore album ‘The Catalyst Fire’ landing Dead Letter Circus their second #2 ARIA Chart Position and incredible reviews, Dead Letter Circus have signed deals for the UK, Europe ( UNFD / ADA ), and the USA ( The End Records ), and are currently on The Catalyst Fire World Tour debuting their highly anticipated new material to fans across the globe. Last month DLC stopped off in South Africa to headline Krank’d Up Festival in Johannesburg, then ventured to their co-headline tour of the UK, Germany and Belgium with Monuments. Unfortunately the US government shutdown wreaked havoc on the band’s US work visa processing, with the band’s passports locked in the US Embassy. Fingers were crossed, flights were moved three times, and shows were cancelled in the US, but making a little lemonade out of lemons, Dead Letter Circus scored alast minute spot on Euroblast Festival in Germany and played to a massive crowd of new fans. Some good karma paid off and at the eleventh hour their US visas were approved, and DLC jumped on the next plane. Dead Letter Circus have now joined Periphery for their massive 30 date tour around the US and Canada in October & November to celebrate their signing with The End Records for North America (label home to The Prodigy , HIM , and The Dandy Warhols ).

Dead Letter Circus

It’s a big day for Dead Letter Circus fans. The band have just announced details for their brand new single ‘The Armour You Own’ plus a small and intimate run of live shows in support. ‘The Armour You Own’ is the first new piece of original music from Dead Letter Circus since 2015’s Aesthesis. It also sees a welcomed return to their amplifiers after 2017’s The Endless Mile – a stripped and acoustic reimagination of songs from the Brisbane five-piece’s career. The single is lead by crunching guitar riffs, driving rhythms and showcases frontman Kim Benzie’s soaring signature vocals over huge hooks. The song was produced by the duo of Forrester Savell (Karnivool) and Matt Bartlem (Jarryd James, Matt Corby) and while its sonically impressive – the lyrics underlie an important message. Benzie explains further..

“The Armour You Own spawned from guiding someone important in my life through a bout of anxiety. The constant musing around flipping your moments of fragility into opportunities for growth. TAYO is the perfect vessel for this message – it’s a pulsing confident riff-monster, whilst dripping with positivity.”

Dead Letter Circus will make a triumphant return to the national stage for a handful of intimate live shows in support of the song. The ‘Armour You Own’ single tour will kick off on May 31 at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel and take in major cities like Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Fremantle. The band will be match fit, having just wrapped up shows with American supergroup Prophets Of Rage on their recent Australian visit.

Tickets for the ‘Armour You Own’ tour are on sale at 9.00am, April 20. With limited capacity at each of these venues, tickets are expected to be snapped up quick.

“It is clear that all participants of the live event ecosystem, from artists, to venues, to fans, demand comprehensive ticketing reform and consumer protection against the predatory ticket resale practices that have deeply afflicted live entertainment in the United States,” said Stephen Parker, executive director of the National Independent Venue Association. “The Fix the Tix Coalition is proud to deliver this critical call to action from artists whose fans experience the injustices of the resale market every show. And, we hope their message resonates with Congress, as officials elected to protect their constituents and as Americans who simply love music. The time for comprehensive ticketing reform is now.”

The full letter delivered to Chairwoman Cantwell and Ranking Member Cruz of the Senate Committee on Commerce is available  here . The letter was organized by the  Fix The Tix Coalition , a broad movement spearheaded by the National Independent Venue Association ( NIVA ) and Eventbrite.
