"Tea city of India"

Dibrugarh tourism.

Dibrugarh is the largest city of Assam located 439 km from Guwahati. A major city in the northeastern region of India in line with cities like Guwahati and Bhubaneswar, Dibrugarh is the emerging communication and industrial hub of North East India. Dibrugarh has an airport that is well-connected with major Indian cities.

Deriving its name from the word "Dibrumukha", the name of the river 'Dibru' with the word 'mukh' meaning mouth, Dibrugarh, is a city and is the headquarters of the Dibrugarh district in the state of Assam in India. Dibrugarh is also one of the two main cities in the state of Assam to receive urban development aid from the Asian Development Bank and is the nerve centre of industry, communication and healthcare of the upper Assam region. The city of Dibrugarh is emerging as a popular destination for business and leisure trips for tourists from India and abroad. This city is loaded with nature and culture and is the destination to unwind yourself. Buridihing, a tributary of Brahmaputra, divides the Dibrugarh district from east-to-west. Buridihing flows through Naharkatia and Khowang, and at a later stage in its course, Buridihing acts as a divider between Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts. This beautiful city is the gateway to the three tea-producing districts of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar. These three areas account for approximately 50% of India's Assam tea crop, and this gives Dibrugarh the rightly earned sobriquet as the "Tea City of India". Oil and timber are the other two big industries in and around Dibrugarh. Bogbeel Bridge - The longest train cum road bridge is located here.

Dehing Patkai is a beautiful rainforest in Assam and is spread over an area of approximately 111 sq. km. Some parts of the wildlife sanctuary are located in Dibrugarh while some spill over into the Tinsukia district. Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is divided into 3 main parts, namely Dirok Rainforest, Upper Dihing River, and Jeypore. Also, Dehing Patkai is home to two elephant reserves – the first one is called Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve and the second one being Dibru-Deomali.

The rainforest is one of the primary choices of places to visit in Dibrugarh as it is covered with a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are beautiful orchid flowers and wild bananas for visitors to enjoy here. It is estimated that there are over 293 species of birds, almost 50 species of mammals and reptile species each, and about 30 butterfly species here. Some of the animals that you may chance upon in this jungle are Hoolock Gibbon, Capped Langur, Pig-tailed Macaque, Asiatic Elephant, Black Panther, Tiger, Clouded Leopard, and Black Bear. Thus, there are high chances of visitors coming face-to-face with residents of the jungle. But don’t worry, as long as you treat them with respect, they will do the same!

2. Joypur Rainforest

The well-known Joypur Rainforest is spread across an area of 108 sq. km. There is a great deal of biodiversity here making the forest a major tourist attraction in the region. While visiting here, look forward to exploring the102 species of orchids grown here, in addition to Hollong tree as tall as 50 meters. Other trees found here include Ajae, Segun, Nahar, Bohot, and Sam. A huge variety of animals are found here, as the natural surroundings are apt for animals like Elephants, Hornbills, Leopards, Flying Squirrels, Pythons, Spotted Deer, and Langurs. The best option to reach here is by renting a car from Naharkatia. One may also choose to board a bus from Naharkatia or Guwahati, which also happens to be the most economical option.

3. Brahmaputra River

Brahmaputra River

This is one of the most revered rivers of India and also happens to be one of the longest in the world. However, what makes it a must-visit during your stay in Dibrugarh is the ample activities it provides. Rafting in this part of the river is a magnificent experience, as it is not very crowded and has some great waves sure to give you an adrenaline rush. The rafting expedition starts from the upper Brahmaputra (Siang) river in an area called Tuting. The rafting route is spread over a distance of 180 km, and along the way, there are some gorges and thick tropical rain forests to enjoy. Depending on how experienced you are and what your preferences are, you may choose to cover any stretch of the rafting route. But no matter how long you choose you to spend rafting, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

4. Namphake Village

This village is located at a distance of 37 km from the city of Dibrugarh close to the river Burhi Dihing. The village is resplendent with natural beauty and serves as a home for several Tai Phakey families. Residents of the village mostly follow Buddhism so it’s common to stumble upon a beautiful monastery while walking around. This is a big reason why Namphake is one of the most popular places to visit in Dibrugarh. In the main temple, there is a statue of Lord Buddha, which is made of gold. Also popular in the monastery are the Ashokan Pillar and the Buddhist Pagoda housed within. One can also find a holy water tank here, known as Mucalinda Tank.

It’s also known as Shikshetra Dham and is located close to the Mahatma Gandhi Park at Khanikar.  Apart from this, there are many other temples that one can visit in the city. Raidongia Dol is one of the main shrines in the city. There were once 24 statues here of which only 14 are present today. Each of the statues is approximately 45 feet high. Notably, the temple was initially dedicated to Lord Vishnu. However, later it came to be known as Shiva Dol.

7. Naharkatia

Naharkatia is the hub of tea plantations in Assam, and visiting the area is an experience of a lifetime for tourists. The story of the namesake of this town is interesting but tragic. Prince Nahar was beheaded by an Ahom noble called Kalia, and that is how the place got its name. Currently, the place is easily accessible and serves as a central point for those visiting other places in the region like Namphake, Sasoni Gojpuria, Gobhuro Dolong, etc. The oldest oil pool in the state of Assam also exists in the town of Naharkatia. There is a railway station in Naharkatia and it’s convenient to take a train to and from here. Apart from this, one may choose to board a bus for Naharkatia from Dibrugarh, Namrup, Moran, Sibsagar, or Jorhat.
