Accessible Travel in Europe by Sage Traveling

The friendly Europe accessible trip planners   at Sage Traveling use our expertise in European accessible travel  to create custom accessible holidays for people with all types of mobility issues, including wheelchair and scooter users, cane and walker users, and senior travelers.  Disabled visitors to Europe will encounter challenges during their travels, but nearly all can be avoided or overcome if you obtain the proper information before your trip.

Our  Europe accessible travel agents  provide you with accessible hotel accommodations, accessible transportation within and between cities, detailed accessibility information on tourist attractions, and custom accessible itineraries to move you efficiently between tourist sights. We make your dream accessible vacation in Europe a reality!  You can view our most popular destinations here:

Accessible Trip Planning by Sage Traveling

Our Europe disabled travel agents create custom accessible holidays for European tourists. We take into account your interests and abilities to create an accessible vacation, rather than ask you to choose from a list of already created itineraries.

Your Europe accessible travel will be tailor-made to your desires to view Renaissance art, visit historical buildings, eat at world-class restaurants, or whatever your interests may be. The accessibility of the trip will be designed to your manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, scooter, or other accessibility need.  Learn more about our accessible trip planning services at the links below:

Accessible Travel Advice for Europe

Many disabled tourists spend hours and hours before their trip trying to find out if the tourist attractions they want to visit are accessible to wheelchair users. Some museum, palace, castle, and church websites will contain accessibility information.  Often this information is very basic and does not answer all the questions a disabled traveler may have. When trying to find accessibility information through a phone call, you may encounter language barriers or staff members that are unfamiliar with accessibility details.

When you travel with Sage Traveling, you will receive  detailed accessibility information including the location of the accessible entrance, the parts of the attraction that are not accessible, and restroom accessibility.  Some example articles are shown below:

Accessible Hotels in Europe

One of the primary concerns for disabled travelers is finding a hotel that is truly accessible. Many hotels may describe themselves as “wheelchair friendly” or say “disabled guests welcome” when their hotel may actually have significant obstacles for disabled travelers.

A step at the hotel entrance, an elevator too small for a wheelchair, and poorly designed accessible hotel bathrooms are common in many European hotels. The Europe wheelchair accessible travel agents at Sage Traveling will provide you a truly accessible hotel room that meets your accessibility needs.

There are DOZENS of hotels that I have already inspected that are not on the website yet.   We can provide you accessible hotel accommodation in Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Bruges, Brussels, Cambridge, Copenhagen, Florence, Istanbul, London, Lucca, Monte Carlo, Naples, Normandy, Oxford, Paris, Pisa, Rome, Siena, Sorrento, and Venice.

Accessible Guided Tours & Shore Excursions

Most disabled tourists prefer a guided tour for their trip to Europe. The Europe handicapped travel agents at Sage Traveling have vetted accessible routes and tour guides to ensure that you and your family experience comfortable and memorable accessible tours during your vacation.

Accessible Cruises in Europe

When going through the steps of  planning your accessible Mediterranean cruise , the most important step is selecting an accessible cruise itinerary.  Choose the right cruise and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime.  Choose the wrong cruise and you could end up with a week-long disappointment!

We are making this wonderful world accessible to everyone

Limitless Travel was born in 2014 , when Founder, Angus Drummond, was told that one day his illness would prevent him from walking. Angus decided that he wanted to shape a world in which anyone of any ability and any age can travel without limits.

Since then, Limitless Travel has created thousands of holiday experiences for customers wanting to travel with confidence. From gently-paced coach tours in Devon, paragliding in Tenerife, safaris in Kenya, to swimming with dolphins in Curacao.

Limitless Travel Image

Meet Angus, Founder of Limitless Travel

“I didn’t want to let muscular dystrophy change my sense of adventure.”

There are some conversations you don’t forget.

I was 23, working as a banker in London, feeling young and invincible, as you do at that age. But a routine check-in I had with my doctor changed all that in a morning. I was diagnosed with MD and told that one day I would need a wheelchair. The news was devastating, but it gifted me a new perspective that my banking salary couldn’t afford.

I quit my job, bought the largest backpack I could find, and set off to discover a world that might one day be cut off from me. My wife and I travelled across 35 countries. It was beautiful and actualizing. But as we climbed Machu Picchu and canoed through Vietnam, I noticed my mobility worsening. I needed a walking stick, and some routes just plain hurt. It gradually dawned on me that the world was not set up for disabled travel and things would only get harder.

When I returned to the UK, I sat down with a notepad and wrote down my plans for an accessible world. Those ideas became the Limitless vision, enabling the wider disabled community to travel with confidence. We started with a coach tour to Blackpool, and now 8 years later we are taking Limitless travellers to all corners of the world. The only question is, where do you want to go?

Accessible England

Your guide to exploring England

England’s lushly beautiful countryside, vibrant cities and dramatic coastline are there for everyone to enjoy, including disabled travellers and those with access needs. There’s plenty of information and guidance on our site as to the best places to visit, where to stay, and how to get there – from assistance at railway stations, to accommodation that has been specifically assessed for those with access needs.

Whether you’re after a few days by the sea, a rural escape or a bright-lights-and-bustle weekend in the city, there is always somewhere to stay that offers comfort and support. Woodford Bridge Country Club  in Devon has a swimming pool hoist, while Holiday Inns in Birmingham and London have rooms with ceiling hoists. For a real sense of escape, book the Hytte in Northumberland – a self-catering lodge that has won awards for its accessibility.

Disability is no barrier to feeling the sand between your toes or the tranquillity of England’s gardens and stately homes. Seaside resorts from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk to Boscombe in Bournemouth offer free beach wheelchairs, while many   National Trust properties have excellent access facilities – particularly the beautiful gardens at Stourhead in Wiltshire and the atmospheric Anglesey Abbey in Cambridge.

Activity breaks are another great option, and again there are plenty of facilities for disabled travellers. Wheels for All offers adapted cycles at many centres including Cumbria, Sheffield and Northumberland, while fishermen can spend a lazy day on the water courtesy of Wheelyboats , which offer independent boating for wheelchair users at locations from Redruth to Ripon. Blind and visually impaired travellers can also enjoy the great outdoors with Sense Adventures , which specialises in guided walking holidays in the Malvern Hills. For families, the spectacular aquarium at The Deep in Hull is ideal for those with sensory needs; particularly on a ‘Quiet day’ when lighting and sound levels are adjusted, BSL-signed presentations are available through the day and there are multi-sensory and interactive experiences.

Whatever your level of access needs, there is an organisation that can help ensure you have a safe, fun and enjoyable holiday.  Revitalise can provide short-break and respite care at their centres in Southport, Essex and Southampton. The Calvert Trust offers outdoor adventure holidays in Exmoor, Kielder and the Lakes, while the waterways of Essex, Herts and London can be explored on a holiday boat from CanalAbilty . All boats are specially adapted with lifts and other facilities to cater for people of all abilities.

For more ideas and inspiration contact Tourism for All on 0303 303 0146.

Accessible Destinations

In 2014-2016, VisitEngland worked with destination organisations in Birmingham, Brighton, Derbyshire, Lincoln, Margate, Nottingham, Northumberland and the Peak District to develop accessible itineraries in coastal, countryside and city destinations .

You can find increasingly accessible destinations around the country such as Derbyshire, thanks to the work of organisations like Accessible Derbyshire .

Know before you go Many places to stay and visit, including accommodation and attractions that have been assessed by VisitEngland, have an Accessibility Guide (or an Access Statement). Guides are designed to give disabled travellers thorough information on where they are planning to visit. So if you want to know anything from how many steps lead up to the hotel’s front door to the location of the nearest bus stop, look out for Accessibility Guides before you travel.

Confidence to book VisitEngland’s National Accessible Scheme (NAS) highlights accommodation providers who have improved their accessibility. This means recognising accommodation that has introduced grab rails or large-print menus – meaning that if you need a little extra support, or have let your glasses at home, providers have kept your needs in mind!

6 Tour Companies Dedicated to Travelers with Disabilities

By Arundhati Nath

San Pedro de Atacama Chile

Growing up, Neha Arora didn’t have the easiest time traveling with her family—her father is visually impaired and her mother is a wheelchair user. “We’d travel 2,000 miles only to realize the place wasn’t accessible or wouldn’t give us the experience we were looking forward to,” says Arora. In 2016, she founded Planet Abled , a travel company that caters to the needs of people with various disabilities, a group the World Health Organization estimates at 15 percent of the world’s population. Arora isn’t the only one pushing for more thoughtful travel experiences—here’s a look at six companies focused on accessible travel .

Travel for All

Travel for All has organized more than 5,000 vacations around the world for travelers with a variety of requirements, including cane users, slow walkers, hearing and vision impaired persons, travelers with complex health issues like dialysis and developmental disabilities, and wheelchair users. “As multiple sclerosis began to affect my own personal travel, I researched what resources could assist me with executing travel using my wheelchair,” says CEO Tarita Davenock. “I was shocked when I saw the lack of services.” Every trip Travel for All plans comes with an accessibility specialist. “We research and give our clients the pros and cons of any area in the world before planning the trip, so our client knows what to expect while they are in that destination,” says Davenock. “Meticulous planning and great attention to detail are the keystones of keeping our vacations safe.”

Seable Holidays

A Seable group trip in Cambodia, where travelers visited the Wat Phnom temple

Seable Holidays

Seable Holidays specializes in trips for visually impaired travelers. All trips include trained chaperones—who undergo a background check—as well as inclusive sports and sensory activities like horse riding, scuba diving, kayaking, wine tasting, yoga, and tactile museum excursions. And everything is thoroughly vetted, with chaperones, activities, and accommodations tested by blind people before they’re recommended by the company. While trips are on pause during the pandemic, Seable Holidays will bring them back in summer 2022.

Easy Access Travel

Debra Kerper and her team at Easy Access Travel accommodate most types of physical disabilities in their solo trips and mixed group tours. While Kerper sometimes relies on her own experiences as a traveler in a wheelchair, she says every trip needs to be tailored to an individual client’s needs. To do so, the team spends time getting to know their clients to match them with the best vacation choice, and visits hotels and tourist spots for inspection, takes cruises beforehand, and collects information from trustworthy sources to ensure a safe, accessible, and fun experience.

Planet Abled

Neha Arora’s Planet Abled arranges customized tours for people with different types of disabilities, and also plans group tours that include non-disabled people. Their trips mostly take place in India and South East Asia , with plans to expand to countries in Europe, and popular activities include river rafting, skiing, trekking, and wildlife safaris. Some of their extra touches include assigning a travel buddy for the blind, seeking special permission from museums so clients can touch and feel the articles on display, and arranging for sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired.

Wheel the World

Alvaro Silberstein, the CEO of Wheel the World , was paralyzed from the chest down after surviving an accident at 18. This didn’t stop him from seeing the world—he’s since visited 30 countries on five continents. “I realized that people with disabilities should be able to explore places as anyone else,” he says. Most of his clients are adults or seniors with mobility disabilities and wheelchair users, and he can arrange solo travel or group trips. Silberstein wants to create more awareness around accessibility, and his company pays special attention to details like the height of beds, width of doors, and accessibility of bathrooms, compiling this information on the Wheel the World website. Their multi-day trips are designed with local tour operators with a focus on accessible travel, and includes access to adaptive bikes, beach wheelchairs, and equipment for hiking, skydiving, kayaking, scuba diving, and surfing—they’ve even planned Macchu Pichu trips for wheelchair users . The company makes sure “prices are competitive and the pricing is the same no matter if the clients have a disability or not,” says Silberstein.

Tapooz Travel Portugal

A quiet moment in Sintra, Portugal

Tapooz Travel

Laurent Roffe and Aicha Nystrom spent years volunteering with an organization that provides outdoors excursions to people with disabilities. “We have many friends in wheelchairs as part of our close community,” says Roffe. “I’m a sea kayak guide and [Aicha] is a ski guide and this has always been a source of immense joy for us. Launching our accessible travel business was a natural extension of what we are and what we like to do.” Their company, Tapooz Travel , specializes in trips for those with mobility issues, including visual and hearing impairment, rather than cognitive disabilities. When they have a client with a visual or hearing impairment, they make sure there’s at least one guide trained in sign language, or have a guide who can help with things like reading the menu at the restaurant and providing a voice narration during a site visit. Their network also includes adaptive sports instructors, sailboat skippers, tribal elders, massage therapists, and hot air balloon operators , all of whom are trained to work with travelers with disabilities.

For those with visual impairment

A charity that organises holidays, often in groups with a sighted buddy, Revitalise plans trips in both the UK and abroad, some suitable for those with assistance dogs.

Holidays overseas

Inform your airline, tour operator and accommodation provider.

Ensure you discuss your personal mobility and medical circumstances with the tour operator, airline and accommodation provider. Provide all details in writing too. The ABTA checklist will give you an idea of what information you need.

Travelling with a wheelchair

Take a certificate of compliance for any motor batteries, and request that the wheelchair is available in transit if you're making complex, connecting air journeys. Should small repairs to the wheelchair need to be made while away, a local hospital may be able to help. Another handy tip: take a door wedge. They're really good for keeping doors open and making life easier!

Overseas holidays you can rely on

Enable Holidays  audits all the hotels they use for suitability for those in wheelchairs, slow walkers and people with limited mobility. Help with adapted airport transfers is available too.

Talking to other disabled people is a good way to find out about accessible travel. They could be people:

  • with the same condition
  • with similar needs to you
  • who want the same kind of holiday, such as adventure travel or a weekend stay

Travelling when you’re disabled can cost more. For example:

  • paying for a carer or personal assistant (PA) to go on holiday with you
  • taking out specialist medical insurance
  • extra seating costs on transport like buses and trains

There might be ways of avoiding some of these extra costs, like shopping around for insurance.

Disabled travellers should expect the same level of service from mainstream travel operators as everyone else. But there are companies that specialise in supporting disabled travellers’ needs.

Limitless Travel is a specialist holiday provider for people with a wide range of mobility restrictions and conditions.

Enable Holidays is an agency that specialises in accessible travel for wheelchair users.

Travel Eyes is a tour operator providing independent group travel for people who are blind or partially sighted.

Disabled Holidays is a specialist provider that organises a range of accessible holidays including cruises, adventure holidays, and family breaks.

If you require a travel companion or would like to find a travel buddy to go on holiday with you, there are services that can help you find the right match.

Trusted Travel Buddies can help you to plan your holiday with a companion or provide personalised support during your trip.

Wheelchair Travel lists people and organisations who are available as personal care assistants while you are travelling.

Able Community Care has a travel companion service which can match you with somebody for personal care, domestic care or companionship while you’re on holiday.

You could start by sharing:

  • where you want to go
  • what you want to do
  • what makes you feel excited

You could ask questions on forums like:

  • Where have you been that was good for access? And where was bad for access?
  • How do you budget? Did you need to manage extra costs like travelling with a personal assistant (PA)?
  • Did you access any funding through a charity or social care provider?
  • How did you research and plan your itinerary? Were you able to see and do everything you wanted?
  • Did anything go wrong while you were on holiday? How did you deal with it?
  • Which staff were the most helpful?
  • Did you take extra luggage, for example your wheelchair, shower chair or a portable hoist? How did you manage this with your transport?
  • What insurance did you get? Where did you get it from? Was it expensive?
  • Did you plan yourself or use a travel agency? Can you recommend a travel agency?
  • Do you have any tips for finding the best deals? Or can you recommend any deals?
  • Is there anything you would do differently next time?

If you feel comfortable, you may also want to ask questions that are more specific to your condition or impairment. For example, you could ask if anyone has tips for quieter ways to travel, or fun activities that are wheelchair-friendly.

Enriching your disabled customers’ experience

Accessible Travel Consultancy Services supports businesses, including travel and leisure providers, by helping them to understand why disability inclusion matters and how it can create environments, processes and procedures that encourage seamless inclusion to be enjoyed by all. Understanding the needs and requirements of your disabled customers is key to providing a superior customer experience .

disabled travel companies uk

There are currently in excess of 14 million people in the UK living with a disability and families who have at least one disabled member are said to have a spending capacity in the region of £250 billion .

People in the UK living with disabilities are a constantly growing consumer market and require products and services which are disability inclusive. As the prevalence of disability is expected to rise, society and also businesses need to consider accessibility and inclusion as a means of future-proofing products and services for customers. Recent studies confirmed that 87% of people with disabilities travel with at least one other person, representing a significant opportunity for aviation and holiday providers to expand their markets.

Inclusivity therefore, is not only the right thing to do, but it is also better for the bottom line. A recent Deloitte LLP study found that inclusive organisations are eight times more likely to achieve better business outcomes, six times more likely to be innovative and agile, and twice as likely to meet or exceed financial targets. Yet often disability inclusion is ignored, or overlooked, simply due to naïveté or lack of awareness. Or even because of a fear of the unknown or concerns about doing the right thing – and how.

That is why Accessible Travel Consultancy Services can provide access to a team of individuals who have collectively run, operated and experienced accessibility in transport and leisure, as well as other sectors within the commercial world. Who between them have a comprehensive understanding and experience of disability and accessibility first-hand. Services and experience set are broadly arranged into three key areas: End user, Expertise, and Insight. Enabling them to deliver a broad and comprehensive range of solutions for you to better engage and optimise your disabled customers` experience.

disabled travel companies uk

We understand that Accessibility can mean different things to different people and is dependent upon the barriers each individual faces. Whereas Inclusivity refers to products and services that are not only accessible but appealing to use and make people feel valued and ‘included’. It also enables individuals and groups to feel safe, respected, engaged, motivated, and valued, for who they are and for their contributions toward organisational and societal goals.

We want to create experiences for your customers that are both accessible and inclusive – practical, pleasurable to experience, and represent the same opportunities for all consumers. To do this our team draws upon their considerable years of knowledge and experience, both of disability and the Travel and Leisure sectors. Adopting a compassionate and pragmatic approach, combined with a sound knowledge and understanding of the appropriate legislation and guidance. Examples of which are below:

  • Disability Discrimination Act 1995
  • Equality Act 2010
  • Package Travel Regulations 2018
  • Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006 – Rights of Persons with Reduced Mobility when Travelling by Air
  • ECAC.CEAC Doc No. 30 (PART I) Section 5
  • Americans With Disabilities Act 1990
  • U.S. Department of Transport 14 CFR Part 382 – Non-discrimination on the Basis of Disability in Air Travel
  • ISO (International Standards Organisation) Accessibility Guidelines

Background and approach

Accessible Travel Consultancy Services (ATCS) is a one-stop shop for disability awareness and support. It evolved from its sister company, Accessible Travel & Leisure (ATL), which was established in the late 1990s. Starting life as a tour operator ATL soon became the UK’s leading specialist provider of holidays for disabled travellers and their families.

The company was created to enable predominantly less-mobile holidaymakers travel overseas with more dignity and respect than they had previously been afforded. ATL’s mission was to overcome existing prejudice and ignorance, by better educating overseas hoteliers and transport suppliers on the merits of engaging and supporting the disability community. It provided them with a tangible business case demonstrating why they should embrace tourism for the disabled.

disabled travel companies uk

Following ATL`s success, Andy Wright (CEO) went on to assist the Aviation sector in supporting their efforts to improve services and facilities for their PRMs (Persons with Reduced Mobility). Evaluating the suitability and effectiveness of staff training modules, auditing infrastructure, and testing and challenging existing processes and procedures. Subject to results, Andy then proposed appropriate solutions for decision-makers. While at the same time, encouraging increased engagement with charities and disability organisations to strengthen their business by forging partnerships and collaborations within the local community.

ATCS was then formed in 2013 to continue supporting aviation, while at the same time expanding its portfolio to include other transportation organisations and holiday and leisure providers. ATCS aided those companies who wanted to better engage with their customers, who either struggled with their mobility or were wheelchair users. This also included supporting those with hidden disabilities, such as deafness and visual impairments. Or those who had been diagnosed with a mental health, cognitive or intellectual impairment.

Andy has used his experience as a wheelchair user and business owner, to initially help airports and airlines adapt and tailor their services for disabled travellers. He has also adopted the role of Disability Advocate/Ambassador for a number of UK airports – including Heathrow, Manchester, and Edinburgh – delivering practical guidance and advice to their staffing teams. FlixBus buses in Scotland

Coach service offers journeys across the UK for knockdown price of £2 each way

Hundreds of cut-price, sustainable intercity journeys are on special offer this week for trips across England, Scotland and Wales

A transport company is offering £2 tickets for coach trips across the UK to be taken up to May 12. With a £1 service fee, that means travellers planning journeys can book long-distance tickets from £3 on the FlixBus website or app.

In England there is a government-backed scheme capping local bus tickets at £2 until December 2024, but this offer opens up longer routes and also applies to journeys into and around Wales and Scotland, where the £2 cap doesn’t exist. So, if you fancy a trip through the blossoming valleys from Bristol to Swansea, or from Glasgow to Inverness via the Cairngorms, now is the time to book. The deal is available until Sunday 21 April.

The international travel tech company is celebrating three years of business in the UK. It runs in partnership with local coach companies using green, branded vehicles. Earlier this year FlixBus launched the first direct electric coach service between London Victoria station and Newport in south Wales two of around 75 UK destinations currently covered by the network.

FlixBus began as a German startup in 2013 and has grown exponentially since then to cover thousands of routes in more than 40 countries, entering the UK market in 2020. Last summer it launched the first ever regular routes from several UK cities, including Leeds and Cambridge, direct to Amsterdam. The buses aim to be cheap, sustainable, easy to book and comfortable, with free wifi and charging points on board.

The lowest-priced journeys include direct routes such as Manchester to Edinburgh, London to Bridgend, Bristol to Newcastle and hundreds more intercity connections. The whole FlixBus Scottish network is part of the £2 scheme with Inverness added as a new destination this month. In Scotland, National Entitlement Card and Young Scot cardholders can get free travel.

Andreas Schörling, managing director of FlixBus UK, said the network offers affordable tickets and “comfortable, modern vehicles” and is celebrating its third anniversary with “£2 travel around the vibrant cities and towns of the UK”. The company aims to “become the best-loved coach brand in the country”, he added, offering “reliable services to as many passengers as possible”.
