Shocking video shows pregnant Disney cruise passenger dangling over the Atlantic Ocean

A shocking video shows the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship, dangling above the Atlantic Ocean.

The 35-year-old unamed woman was having medical complications when the Coast Guard was called to help her.

Once the crew arrived, she was airlifted above the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

The video, which was taken by the Coast Guard, shows a member of the Coast Guard crew being lowered onto the cruise, named Disney Fantasy, on Monday.

The rescuer was later raised, with the woman, by a MH-60T Jayhawk chopper and flown to a hospital.

After the rescue, the agency said: "Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico."

The Coast Guard also deployed an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Miami to meet with the cruise ship.

The agency said: "Once on scene, the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew deployed their rescue swimmer aboard the cruise ship, who prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft."

The woman was transported to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico and treated at Centro Medico Hospital.

Lt. Cmdr Todd Stephens said in a statement: "Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required. This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader, said his crew was "glad everything came together to help this passenger."

It was unclear if the woman's emergency was related to her pregnancy.

According to the company's frequently asked questions, women must be no more than 23 weeks pregnant in order to set sail. If they enter the 24th week of pregnancy during the sailing, "they will be refused passage due to safety concerns."

Watch a Disney cruise ship crash into a dock, and enjoy the man narrating the whole dumb thing

The Disney Dream cruise ship had a collision with a pier last week while attempting to dock in Nassau, Bahamas.

Scott Lewitt uploaded a video of the Disney Dream cruise ship slowly scraping the side of the pier, and gives narration which is just better than the video itself.

Most of the damaged occurred by the ship’s stern, which was described as minor, and no injuries were reported according to Disney.

“I knew that was going to happen,” said Lewitt as the ship slowly crept towards the pier. “Apparently Goofy’s driving the boat today.”

According to social media reports, the Disney Dream hit the dock while maneuvering into her berth earlier today in Nassau, Bahamas. Based on the following photos shared with us by Caitlin Maddaline, the Disney Dream’s stern was dented above the waterline, but it does not appear to have ruptured the hull.

Wow… is Nassau one of the ports that the Pilot Boat driver has to steer the ship into the dock? It’s hard to believe this even happened (and 3 weeks before our cruise)!

' src=

As far as I know, the pilots usually just navigate ships in and out of harbors and waterways around a port. The captain of the ship docks. Because of new ship pod systems, they don’t even need tugs anymore to maneuver in and out of the docking areas. But it looks like this time they did.

' src=

Mari, the pilots always need to maneuver the ships into and out of docks/harbors. If a captain does it, it is strictly illegal and can result in serious consequences.

' src=

Harbor pilots do not moor ship. They advise the captain when entering and leave port. They do not drive ship.

' src=

The pilot advises the captain who is in full control.

' src=

I worked on the dream for 2 years! The ONLY port the Disney captain actually docks is Castaway so this was the pilot boat driver. Disney takes Safety VERY seriously so don’t fear when you cruise! You will be in very safe hands

' src=

I wonder who the Captain of the Dream is (I know it wasn’t his fault).

' src=

Captain Henry.

' src=

Kind of scary, it’s not like it nicked the edge of the pier it smacked into it. Thank goodness the damage is not more severe.

' src=

I sail the Dream tomorrow! Yikes. I hope there is no change to the itinerary. I would hate to miss out on Castaway Cay.

' src=

Wonder if they’ll change their procedure of backing in stern first? SCOTT, If you receive any photos after they sand and paint, please post. Would love to go down in the engine room or stern compartment to see what internal damage was done. Thanks.

This was the pilot boat driver who did this. The only port the Disney captains dock in is Castaway Cay.

' src=

Yes the Harbor Pilot is driving the boat, not for long. My wife and daughter are on this cruise ?

' src=

And the guy filming it is talking an awful lot of smack for a dude who’s shooting video vertically.

' src=

This is the best comment on here

' src=

This IS the best comment here!!!

' src=

The ship is fine and those of you cruising soon, just go out there and have fun.I’ve cruised 8 times with disney and they are awesome.

' src=

My wife and I were on this cruise. We were on our veranda as we pulled into dock. Never felt anything, didn’t know about it till that evening.

' src=

Just so everyone is aware of what a Pilot actually does. The Pilot has specific knowledge of hazards in relation to the specific port, and also knowledge of the currents and sea conditions. The pilot makes recommendations to the Captain and Bridge Officers on the proper speed to enter a port, and he/she will advise the best and safest location to make a turn in the port. The Pilot “NEVER” controls the vessel, and it’s always the Bridge Officers that maneuver the vessel. A Bridge Officer is also on the aft mooring deck, and the forward mooring deck, and they constantly update the Bridge on any hazards and distances that the Bridge Team can’t see from their location. Knowing this specific vessel personally, and also being involved in the arrival procedure, the Captain would be on the Port Side Bridge wing looking straight down the side of the ship, and would have been very aware that the ship was not properly lined up for this maneuver. The officer on the aft mooring deck would also have been calling on the radio to the bridge telling them of the impending collision. One thing to add, that there is always a possibility that it could have been a technical failure with something being controlled on the Bridge.

' src=

Watched it leave the port on the web cam today. They painted it and all seems well.

' src=

Actually, the Pilots do not actually handle the ship. they simply advise the Captain and Crew on the proper headings and such in the channel and harbor. They do directly navigate; however they do not handle the ship’s thrusters and pods during docking procedures. Would you hand over a $1B piece of equipment to a stranger? The Captain can take the Conn at any time (though that is rare) if they feel the pilot is doing something wrong. Sometimes the Pilots simply advise and handle communication and don’t give orders at all. In some ports there can actually be “Docking Pilots” that handle very difficult docking procedures, but this is rather rare.

I used to work onboard and, boy, I’ve heard stories! At that point in the procedure it would have been the Captain or whomever he appointed (like the Staff Captain or even a more junior, though qualified, officer) at the direct controls on the bridge wing.

This is one of the major misunderstandings of the pilot’s position. That being said, someone is in trouble (or fired) for this one.

' src=

Captain Lee will sure be mad!

Along with Captain Mickey, Captain Hook, and Captain Jack. 🙂

' src=

With all the technology I don’t know how come they don’t have cameras to help the captain steer the big boat in and out of port they should put cameras on all big boat it would help I thank . Marty M giving you the idea and if they put cameras on the ships I should be awarded not money just thank you for the idea about the cameras??????!!!!!!????!!!

The ships have cameras everywhere.

Also from Marty McFarland alarms like vehicle have on the back bumpers with cameras that would I thank really help the captain steer better I am signing off if you like my idea let me know thanks have a great and bless day

' src=

No! No Pilot is not control at any time on any ship. It i the sole responsibility of the captain and crew. Tell you what though, it is an Italian crew. Search all the cruise ship crashes and you know why this has happened.

' src=

Does anyone know what happened in the end? what was the main problem or why this happened? I´m very curious…. And do we know the Captain of the Dream that day? Was it Captain Henry?

' src=

I still do not know.. And we were on the dream when it happened and still know nothing.. ugh

This happened when we were on it… It was shocking.. Friends had heard about it on land before i even had chance to tell them..But what really bothered me is no explanation or nothing from Disney.

' src=

why did you need an explanation? Other people on that cruise didnt even feel it, so how were you shocked? Go about your vacation.

Because it’s the right thing to do.You would not be shocked if your ship had damage like this? I might say you are not the brightest crayon in the box then.. We did go about our vacation. . Thanks for the reply.

' src=

My family and I have cruised on the Dream 4 times. We love it! All 4 times the docking was so smooth we didn’t even know it was docking. I feel sure it had to be a mechanical problem or just a bad day for a Junior officer. I would cruise again on that ship anytime!

' src=

The only time I know of that a Captain relinguishes command of his vessel is as it is pulled into or exiting a drydock. Shipyard engineers are responsible for the ship’s safe entrance and exit from drydock. Pilots are advisors and the Captain can chose to to disregard the pilots advice as the Captain is responsible for the ship’s operation. The owning company can impose SOPs (standard operating procedures) but maritime law will regard the Captain as responsible for the vessel.regardless of company policies.

A US Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter safely airlifted an American woman experiencing health complications aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship

A pregnant woman experiencing health complications aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship was airlifted in a dramatic rescue by the US Coast Guard.

The passenger connected to air suspension gear dangled mid-air above the cruise near Puerto Rico as a helicopter hoisted her up.

Drone footage shared by the US Coast Guard showed its MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter hovering near the ship and a single rescuer being lowered down by rope and landing on both feet at the front of the massive vessel.

More than 10 ship crew members, some wearing bright orange vests, were then recorded carrying the passenger on a portable stretcher and laying her down at the front of the ship.

A Coast Guard helicopter carried out the medical rescue in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

The Coast Guard member prepared a rescue basket and secured the woman still on the stretcher, then signaled to the chopper above. She was lifted while remaining in horizontal position and taken into the aircraft safely by Coast Guard members on Monday morning. The cruise ship doctor was also taken along with her.

‘Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required,’ stated Lt Cmdr Todd Stephens on Tuesday.

‘This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.’

The patient was a 35-year-old American citizen who required greater medical care ashore, stated the Coast Guard.

Cruise crew took the woman on a portable stretcher to the front of the ship

Disney Fantasy crew contacted watchstanders in San Juan requesting a medical evacuation as the vessel was in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla. A chopper was deployed from Miami.

The woman was taken to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan and transported to the nearby Centro Medico hospital.

‘We are glad everything came together to help this passenger,’ stated Ensign Michael Riccio of the Coast Guard’s San Juan sector.

‘The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference.’

This happened a few hours ago, I have the pictuers but I can't post them on this thread, I'll post them on my pics page. April 21, 2005 Grandeur Damaged In Collision; RCI Releases Statement Royal Caribbean has at last released an official statement on Grandeur of the Seas' collision with a pier in Costa Maya; the most notable element is that "Grandeur of the Seas' seven-night sailing scheduled to depart on Saturday, April 23, will be delayed in its departure." Earlier rumors swirling about indicated that Saturday's voyage would be cancelled. However, stay tuned -- anything can happen at this point. From the statement: "Royal Caribbean International's Grandeur of the Seas struck the pier in Costa Maya, Mexico, at approximately 1 p.m. (E.S.T.) Wednesday, while the ship was docking in 15-knot winds and a 3-knot current, which contributed to the incident. All guests and crew members are completely safe, and none were injured in the incident. The ship has a football-shaped puncture in the bow, on its starboard side, that is approximately 42 feet long and five feet wide at its widest point. The puncture is in the first deck, approximately five feet above the waterline. "The ship is safely docked and otherwise fully operational with all amenities. Royal Caribbean immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities regarding the incident and is fully assisting in their investigations. "A team of technical experts, including regulatory authorities, have arrived at the ship. Their full evaluation of repairs, including the amount of time needed to complete them in Costa Maya, is expected at approximately 6 p.m. (E.S.T.) today. Based on all the information now available, Royal Caribbean is currently making contingency plans to assist guests in returning to New Orleans by either Saturday or Sunday with complimentary flight arrangements -- should the ship be unable to return to New Orleans this weekend. If that were the case, guests who have additional vacation time are welcome stay onboard and return with the ship. "The Grandeur of the Seas' seven-night sailing scheduled to depart on Saturday, April 23, will be delayed in its departure. Guests booked on that sailing are being contacted now. Details regarding its departure date and time will be available later this evening on Royal Caribbean's Webs site -- www.royalcaribbean.com . "The ship ... was scheduled to be at sea today and Friday before returning to New Orleans on Saturday." In the meantime, onboard Grandeur of the Seas, reports that "man, that hole is BIG, on the first level. The Mexican police are forbidding people to take pictures ... I have no idea why (but we still got a few). When we returned to the ship this evening, you could see through the hole into the ship and people inside. "Actually I can't see how the ship suffered this much damage when the pier is just a bit crumpled, concrete falling off right at the end, and we of course weren't going fast at all. Captain says the 15-knot winds and the 3-knot headwind did it for us. Oh well."

Even moving very slowly, 74,000 tons is a lot of momentum and hard to stop. Photos Nobody should ever complain about the Captains discussion to skip Castaway Cay, or any other port due to unfavorable conditions.

Well, now all know why winds and currents make docking impossible at Castaway Cay. My husband saw the photos and said, ''hey, the next time I bump our slip I won't feel so bad! I bet that captain is writing he resume'." At least no one was hurt, it could have been worse. Kathy

For all the blowhards who think they know how to pilot a huge ship and ***** & moan about missing castaway cay or any other port, let them take a look here at the photos. On the April 2nd MAgic we docked but it was a rainout, and i was surprised we docked. On the Jan 16th Wonder it had been a windy week all week and i was surprised we docked then, too. No problem if docks get missed to avoid scenes like that. And I have thought of taking a cruise on the Grandeur, too, because I travel to new orleans and it is the same mileage trip there as it is from ATL to Port Canaveral, but DW would not like the ship because i think it does not have a basketball court.

I have always understood how hard it is to dock, but here is a thought..... What if they tried to dock at CC, had a little problem like this and all aboard were stranded at CC while they fixed it????? That is actually kind of a happy thought.

One of DCL 's ships getting damaged and stuck at CC for an extended period of time would cause a big issue because only one large ship can dock at a time. The other ship would be forced to skip CC. At least Costa Maya can dock ships on both sides of their dock so other cruise ships could still use the port. As a side note, there really is not a lot to do at Costa Maya. Our 8/28/04 Western Magic cruise went there since we skipped Key West. The beach and shopping areas are small and I believe the pools are salt water. I would get bored pretty fast being stuck there for several days. Guess you would just have to pretend they were "at sea" days.

Carnival cruise assessing damage to 2 ships after collision

Six people sustained minor injuries after the collision, the cruise line said.

Six people sustained minor injuries after two Carnival Cruise Line ships collided Friday at a port in Cozumel, Mexico , according to the company.

Those injured presented themselves to the Carnival Glory medical center for evaluation following the incident, a statement from the cruise line read.

A Carnival Glory ship was attempting to dock in the morning when it hit a Carnival Legend ship, according to a statement from the cruise line.

"We are assessing the damage but there are no issues that impact the seaworthiness of either ship. We have advised guests from both ships to enjoy their day ashore in Cozumel," the statement added.

Megan Skora was in her room aboard a nearby cruise ship when she heard the crash.
