Hi Guys - a question for you all

I have been asked by a friend (UK based) who knows that I use TripAdvisor a lot what I think of Travel Republic. He is considering booking a summer 2022 trip to mainland Spain and is apparently finding good prices for hotels that he is interested in using on TR - better than the hotels own direct booking webpages .

I have said that that I am not able to comment personally about TravelRepublic as I have not used them, but have offered to gather feedback about them from the TA community in order to see how people view them especially in terms of Covid19 cancellation issues as I cannot find much about TR recently (certainly none of the multiple moans that we constantly see about GoToGate, Opodo, MyTrip etc etc) .

Does anyone have recent experience (good or bad) of booking trips through Travel Republic that they would like to share?

does travel republic include flights

I think I recall threads over the past year where people have complained about getting in touch with them, and the time it has taken to offer refunds - but that has been par for the course with several providers during that time.

Just to add too, I'd doubt I would use them anytime.

They've also been good when I needed to cancel on one occasion and change on another to a completely different location to boot.

I wouldn't hesitate using them again although the usual caveat applies. Understand the rules of the booking being made and compare with the hotel themselves and perhaps other reputable agents first.

I wouldn't use them for a package not that your friend appears to be doing this as there are probably better alternatives though I tend not to book packages anyway. HTH.

My thoughts mirror #3 almost to the letter.

I should also add that I've never had any difficulty getting hold of them on the phone to query/change anything though that was pre Covid.

They are owned by dnata travel which a subsidiary of the The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the Government of Dubai. So one of the better backed travel agents.

I had accommodation only in Mexico booked for June last year and they refunded in full when when we couldn’t travel.

Thank you for these comments and any more that flow in

My intention is to point him to the replies on this thread and any feedback on other website I can find and then let him make his own mind up but needless to say I am warning him to not even consider the likes of the shonky OTAs that draw so many complaints in comments on this forum generally

Who is Travel Republic?

Which verdict, travel republic customer ratings, what's travel republic like, should i book with travel republic.

Online travel agent (OTA) Travel Republic is a fly-and-flop holiday provider founded in the UK in 2003. Its aim is to allow users to mix and match their own holidays from thousands of flights, hotels, transfers, airport parking, experiences and more. It’s now owned by dnata World Travel, part of the Emirates group based in Dubai. It offers budget beach/resort holidays, city breaks and theme-park trips in Europe, as well as in long-haul destinations from 30+ airports across the UK and Ireland.

Find out more:  What is a package holiday and why should you book one?

Travel Republic impressed readers with its great value for its beach/resort holidays, but it was one of the poorest performers for all-inclusives. There are lots of providers that received better customer scores in our surveys.

Using the table: Customer score: Based on a combination of overall satisfaction and how likely people are to recommend the company. In August 2022, we asked 8,361 Which? Connect panel members and the public to complete an online survey about their experiences of booking and going on holiday in the past two years. In September 2023 we asked 1,918 Which? Connect panel members about their experiences of an all-inclusive holiday.

Travel Republic competes in the budget holiday OTA market against companies such as On The Beach. While On The Beach and a few others could offer a cheaper average short-haul price than its £89pp per night, Travel Republic was one of just a handful of companies with a five-star value-for-money rating for both its beach/resort and family holidays. One loyal customer said: ‘We have used it for many years. Always good value’. Another commented on its 'great deals’.

The company received several five-star ratings across three categories, with customers being especially impressed by how well the online description matched the reality of the holiday. One said Travel Republic 'gave us exactly what we wanted.’

However, it was less consistent for the organisation of its holidays, with an average three stars in that category for family holidays. One customer complained: ‘The villa details provided were incorrect and resulted in us being up for 24 hours trying to sort it.’

It scored particularly poorly for its all-inclusive holidays, where its second from bottom in the table. It received poor two-star ratings in all but one category, including customer service and included benefits.

Travel Republic might be worth considering as a budget beach holiday option (but not if you're planning to go all inclusive).

However, there are still several higher-scoring providers, including Which? Recommended Providers Hays Travel and Jet2holidays, which cost just a little more on average.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Moscow

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Moscow flight deals.
  • Moscow Vnukovo International Airport (VKO) consists of two terminals, Terminal A and Terminal D. The former is the main terminal that serves most international and domestic flights. Terminal D mostly serves flights arriving from North Caucasus. The terminals are a short walk from each other as they are adjacent and are connected by walkways.
  • Passengers arriving at Moscow Domodedovo International Airport (MDE) can utilize the airport’s shower facilities to freshen up before leaving the airport. Showers are available in the Left Wing of the International Arrivals Area.
  • Passengers looking to explore MDE luggage-free are welcome to leave their luggage at the airport’s storage lockers. You can find the lockers Landslide of the International Arrivals Area and on the Ground Floor of the Domestic Arrivals.
  • Gadget-totting travelers can charge their devices at MDE. The airport offers stand-alone charging stations in every waiting lounge. You can also rent battery chargers from the Left Luggage room.
  • Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) is completely smoke-free in the terminals. However, the airport offers designated smoking pavilions to accommodate smoking passengers. The smoking pavilions are outside at the terminals’ entrances.
  • For flights to Moscow, travelers have four different airports to choose from: Domodedovo International Airport (DME), Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), Vnukovo International Airport (VKO), and Zhukovsky International Airport (ZIA). However, most travelers will be flying into either Domodedovo International Airport or Sheremetyevo International Airport, as they are by far the most popular of the four airports.
  • Getting from Sheremetyevo International Airport to downtown Moscow is simple, thanks to the Aeroexpress, which connects directly to both Belorussky Railway Terminal and Okruzhnaya station. From either station, you can head to a number of locations across Moscow in no time.
  • Looking to head straight to the hotel after your flight to Moscow? If you are landing at Sheremetyevo International Airport, the Novotel Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport Hotel is within walking distance of the airport’s terminals. For Domodedovo International Airport, on the other hand, there is the Domodedovo AirHotel, which is located just half a mile away from the airport and offers free transfers to and from the airport.
  • If you need to get between Domodedovo International Airport and Sheremetyevo International Airport, your best bet is to take a combination of the Aeroexpress and the Moscow Metro. There is even a special “Between Airports” ticket available for purchase at the Aeroexpress ticket office.
  • Got a few hours to spare at Sheremetyevo International Airport? Why not stop off at the Aero-beauty hair salon for a cut, trim, or maybe even a dye? Another option is to spend some time at the History Museum of Sheremetyevo, which has several unique exhibitions on the history of the airport.

13 mistakes to avoid at all-inclusive resorts

Katie Genter

I stayed for 28 nights at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic during hurricane season — pre-coronavirus times. I live out of hotels and I discovered an all-inclusive property that was bookable for just 8,000 Choice points per night. So my husband and I went and lived the all-inclusive life for nearly a month.

Between this 28-night stay and a shorter three-night stay at a different property, I discovered many mistakes that can be made when booking, packing for and staying at an all-inclusive resort. Most of the mistakes in this guide only apply to all-inclusive resorts, but some could also apply to other trips.

Here are the mistakes to avoid when traveling to an all-inclusive resort.

Assuming everything is included

(Photo by Zach Griff/The Points Guy)

"All-inclusive" might make you believe everything is included, but this is rarely the case. You may incur extra charges at a resort for such things as select restaurants, tours, activities, spa offerings, Wi-Fi, premium alcohol and room service. Even if all of these are included, you'll likely incur extra charges for airfare, baggage fees, airport transport and resort fees.

Before booking an all-inclusive vacation, do your research to see what's included and what's not. Some resorts are more all-inclusive than others, so be sure to account for that when comparing prices.

Choosing the wrong resort

Make sure the resort budget, theme and demographics fit your expectations for your trip. (Photo by JT Genter/The Points Guy)

Find the right resort for you. In general, this boils down to three things: guest demographics, resort location and resort theme. Location is simple to research, and most properties are relatively clear regarding their theme. But demographics can be difficult and are usually best determined by reading reviews and looking at photos from past guests.

The resort we stayed at for a month was mainly filled with Dominican tourists and Canadians traveling on Sun Wing vacation packages, while the resort I stayed at during JetBlue's Destination Good trip promotion was more popular with large families, weddings and bachelorette parties. The other guests at the resort can have an impact on your experience, so do your research.

Traveling at the wrong time of year

does travel republic include flights

We visited the Dominican Republic in the midst of hurricane season, which may have been the reason Choice priced the property at 8,000 points per night. It only rained a couple of days, but we did need to make backup plans in the form of refundable award tickets leaving the island when we were in the predicted path of a hurricane. Luckily, the storm changed course and we were able to cancel the tickets.

Also check the dates of local and national holidays, since many resorts can get crowded because they offer day passes or annual passes to local residents on those days. You may want to avoid the rainy season or humid season unless you're purposefully traveling during the offseason to get lower prices.

Not considering your booking options

There are many ways to book the same resort. (Photo by JT Genter/The Points Guy)

In general, you can book direct paying cash rates, book direct using award nights or points, book using cash or points through a credit card portal or book through an online travel agent. And, as some of my recent guides have shown, no single booking method is always best. Consider all of your options.

It's also important to enter the correct number of guests when searching your options. Many all-inclusive resorts effectively charge more for each additional guest, including kids, even when you're sharing the same room. However, you can often get around this by booking award nights, as we did during our most recent stay at the Choice Ascend Hotel Collection's Emotions Puerto Plata where the cash rate almost doubled when adding a second guest but the points rate remained the same.

There are more properties than ever that you can book using hotel points. Hyatt already has a number of well-known all-inclusive properties including the Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta and Hyatt Ziva Cancun . But Marriott and Choice are also adding to their all-inclusive portfolios

Not learning about resort procedures early in your stay

does travel republic include flights

Each resort has intricacies that must be mastered quickly in order to take full advantage of your stay, like restaurant reservations. Some resorts let you sign up for restaurant reservations in advance or at check-in but many require you to reserve each morning for that evening. If this seems to be the case for your resort, you'll want to figure out where to make reservations, which restaurants (if any) have a surcharge and what time you can begin to make reservations each morning.

You'll also want to master the operating hours of restaurants, pools, bars and activities. Ideally, there will be a schedule of activities posted or available in your room along with a map of the resort with opening and closing times.

Not packing the right clothing

does travel republic include flights

Most resorts offer a few options for dinner, ranging from a casual beach spot to a buffet to formal dining. If you plan to dine more formally, you'll want to research ahead of time what type of dress is required. The "formal" restaurants may simply require closed-toe shoes, long trousers and shirts with sleeves -- but some resorts will require significantly more formal attire.

Additionally, if you plan to leave the resort, you'll want to pay attention to local cultural norms. And of course, consider the temperature and humidity when you're packing.

Eating or drinking too much

Hyatt Ziva Cancun included dessert shop (Photo by Zach Griff / The Points Guy)

When food and drink are included and unlimited, it can be easy to overdo it. This is especially true for the buffet restaurants, where you may keep seeing additional foods that look appetizing. I found it best to walk around the buffet to peruse the options before getting a plate.

Beer and wine may be your best bets if you plan to drink alcohol during your all-inclusive stay. These drinks have a known and consistent alcohol percentage, so you can easily track how much you are drinking. Mixed drinks, on the other hand, may get light or heavy pours depending on the bartender.

Failing to bring reusable cups

The pool bar normally serves drinks in small plastic cups -- but you could ask for them to instead us your own cup or water bottle. (Photo by JT Genter/The Points Guy)

Bringing reusable cups is good for both you and the environment. Drinks at the poolside bar, swim-up bar and beach bar are usually served in small disposable plastic cups. But in pre-COVID-19 times, most all-inclusive resorts are happy to fill up your own cup, regardless of its size. I had no issue getting bartenders to fill up my water bottle with beer or rum and coke -- and I didn't need to return to the bar for refills as frequently. Of course, things may be different now, so it's best to check before you go.

Not packing and using sunscreen

(Photo by JT Genter/The Points Guy)

You can usually buy sunscreen at resorts, but it may be overpriced and likely won't be your preferred brand. So if you plan to check a bag, bring ample sunscreen and use it. I saw multiple people who were painfully burned. If you're traveling alone, consider spray sunscreen or simply ask another guest to help.

Falling for a sales pitch

Many all-inclusive resorts have staff whose sole purpose is to sell timeshares, excursions, spa services and upgraded experiences. They are more aggressive at some resorts than at others but be wary that the friendly staff chatting you up shortly after check-in or by the pool may very well be trying to sell you something.

Not taking advantage of included activities and amenities

does travel republic include flights

All-inclusive resorts tend to include a lot of activities and amenities you'd normally pay extra for at a normal resort. For example, room service may be complimentary, golf rounds may be included and some all-inclusive resorts even include excursions. At the same time, most all-inclusive resorts also include some premium options available for additional cost -- so it's best to determine what's included early in your stay so you can enjoy the resort to its fullest.

Not leaving the resort

(Photo by Katie Genter/The Points Guy)

It's easy to never leave an all-inclusive resort, but it's usually worth leaving to explore a nearby town, take a hike, walk around the neighborhood or have lunch at a beach cafe.

During our stay in the Dominican Republic, a taxi organization in our resort complex prohibited Ubers and other vehicles from picking up passengers. If we wanted to leave the complex, we needed to either (1) take an overpriced taxi, (2) walk 10 to 15 minutes to the resort entrance and get an Uber or (3) arrange a tour. So we walked to the entrance and requested an Uber for about a tenth of the stated price of a taxi.

Forgetting to budget for tips

Tipping is controversial, especially at all-inclusive resorts where tips may already be included. You can certainly choose not to tip and shouldn't feel obligated to tip if the all-inclusive includes tips or if tipping isn't part of the local culture. However, even if tips are included, you may want to budget some cash to acknowledge a favorite server, bartender, housekeeper or concierge.

United Airlines bag policy: What you can carry on and how much it costs to check luggage

Following the lead of American Airlines , United Airlines has raised the cost of checking bags.

Under the updated United Airlines baggage policy , the cost to check a bag is now $40 for the first bag ($35 if paid online at least 24 hours before the flight) and $50 for the second bag ($45 if prepaid online) for flights within the U.S.

United's checked bag fees were previously $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.

The cost of checking bags for international travel depends on the destination. For example, it also costs $40 for the first bag and $50 for the second bag for travel to and from Canada and Mexico.

Here's what to know about United Airlines' baggage policy.

How much does United charge for checked bags?

For domestic travel, United Airlines charges $40 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second checked bag. The fees are $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second bag if you pay online at least 24 hours before your flight.

The fees are the same for international destinations in the Americas such as Canada and Mexico, as well as the Caribbean. However, The Arizona Republic found there was no discount to prepay for checked bags for flights to and from Canada when we used United's Bag Fee Calculator to price the cost of checking luggage for Phoenix-Toronto and Phoenix-Calgary itineraries.

Does United Economy include a checked bag?

United Economy fares do not include a checked bag.

Can I bring a carry-on with United Economy?

United's Economy and Economy Plus fares include one free carry-on that can go in the overhead bin plus a personal item. United Basic Economy fares permit one personal item that fits under the seat. Carry-on sized bags must be checked.

Are prepaid baggage fees refundable on United?

Passengers may be able to get refunds for checked luggage if they prepay for more bags than they check, or if their flight is cancelled, according to United.

How can I get a free checked bag on United Airlines?

Certain fare classes and loyalty program tiers include free checked bags on United.

Members of United's MileagePlus rewards program who have MileagePlus Premier status can check at least one bag for free, and the number of free bags depends on their tier. To reach the minimum Premier level, Premier Silver (one free checked bag), passengers must either take 12 qualifying flights and earn 4,000 qualifying points or earn 5,000 qualifying points in a calendar year.

United Explorer Card credit card holders, plus a companion, get one free checked bag when they purchase their plane tickets with that card. The credit card has an introductory annual fee of $0, which increases to $95 annually after the first year.

Active U.S. military members with ID and their dependents can check up to two bags free for personal travel and up to five bags free when traveling on military orders, according to United.

What is United Airlines' baggage allowance?

The baggage weight allowance on United depends on a passenger's fare class and MileagePlus status. For economy and premium economy passengers, checked bags must weigh 50 pounds or less. Fees for overweight bags start at $200.

First class passengers, business class passengers and MileagePlus Premier members can check bags that weigh up to 70 pounds.

Assistive devices such as wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes and crutches are free to check regardless of size and weight.

How many bags does United Airlines allow for free?

United Airlines passengers may board with one carry-on bag and one personal item for free.

What is the carry-on size restriction for United?

Carry-on bags can measure no more than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high, including handles and wheels.

What is the personal item size restriction for United?

The size limit for personal items, which include purses, small handbags, backpacks and laptop bags, is 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high.

Does United allow a backpack and carry-on?

If you have a carry-on bag, you can also bring a backpack as long as it meets the size limit for a personal item, which is 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches high. Passengers may not bring two carry-on size bags.

Is there a weight limit for carry-on bags?

No weight limits for carry-on bags are noted in United's carry-on bag policies. Carry-on bags and personal items within the size limits can fly regardless of weight as long as the carry-on can fit in the overhead bin and the personal item can fit under the seat.
