Do you need a visa to go to Egypt?

Almost all travelers require a visa to enter Egypt, but fortunately, the process is pretty simple, and a little advance planning goes a long way.

This guide will walk you through the entry requirements for visiting the land of pyramids on a tourist visa.

Who needs a visa to visit Egypt?

Most nationalities need a visa to enter Egypt, but citizens of many countries can apply for an e-Visa in advance or obtain a visa on arrival at Egypt’s international airports. Both cost US$25.

Getting an e-Visa is generally a smoother process than getting a visa at the airport. Apply for a tourist visa online in advance on  the Egyptian Government's official e-Visa website . All you have to do is fill out the online application form and pay.

If you decide to get a visa at the airport when you land in Egypt, be prepared to wait in line – bring your own pen to fill out the paperwork in line or on the plane – and pay in cash (US dollars, euros or British pounds only, not Egyptian pounds).

Citizens of Bahrain, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Macau, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates can enter Egypt visa-free for up to 90 days. Citizens of Malaysia can enter for up to 14 days.

If you're not eligible to get a visa on arrival or an e-Visa, head to the Egyptian embassy or consulate in your home country and apply in person. The visa process can take several weeks.

How to get an e-Visa for Egypt

To save time, apply for an e-Visa before your trip to Egypt. Citizens of these countries are eligible for Egypt’s e-Visa and can apply on the Egyptian government's official website . Your passport must be valid for at least six months before the date you intend to arrive.

The process is simple: sign up for an account, fill the form and pay the US$25 using a credit or debit card. You’ll receive email notifications as the application is processed.

If you’re issued a visa, you’ll be emailed a link to your e-Visa to download and print the document. When you land in Egypt, present the e-Visa to the Egyptian border patrol with your passport. Have a copy of your accommodation details or tour booking in case you’re asked to show them at the airport.

Egypt’s e-Visa can be single or multiple entry. The single-entry visa allows visitors one entry into the country for stays of up to 30 days. The multiple-entry visa allows travelers to come into  Egypt an unlimited number of times over a period of 180 days and for up to 30 days at a time. Apply for a multi-entry visa at least seven days before your trip.

Visa on arrival in Egypt

If you don’t have time to apply for an e-Visa, you can still get a visa on arrival at the airport if you’re eligible. Visas are available for purchase (US$25) at a kiosk in the arrivals hall before the immigration counters.

Have the correct amount in cash in a major foreign currency (US dollars, euros or British pounds) to avoid delays.

The visa comes in the form of a stamp that you’ll need to put into your passport to present at the immigration counters and passport control.

If you opt for a visa on arrival, you’ll need a passport that’s valid for at least six months from your arrival date, a travel itinerary and documentation to show you've booked accommodations or tours.

Visa on arrival is available at all of Egypt’s international airports. The downsides are that you can be issued a single entry visa only, and the lines at the airport can be long.

You don't need a visa to stay in Sinai on short trips

If you are visiting the resort towns on the Gulf of Aqaba coast and won’t be going to mainland Egypt, you can stay in Sinai for 14 days without buying an Egyptian visa. The Sinai-only visa allows travellers to visit Sharm El Sheikh , Dahab , Nuweiba , Taba and St Catherine, but you cannot go to Ras Muhammad National Park.

The Sinai-only visa is available at the airport in Sharm El Sheikh and the Egypt–Israel border crossing at Taba. If you arrive at Taba and plan to visit mainland Egypt, you must purchase a visa online in advance or at an Egyptian embassy abroad.

How to Apply Egypt Visa for Nigeria

Most visitors to Egypt need to apply for a visa in advance of their trip.

Unified Egyptian kingdoms date back to the Pharaonic era, around 3000 B.C., making Egypt one of the world’s oldest civilizations.

Egypt is home to some of the world’s oldest monuments, including the Great Pyramid of Giza (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Sphinx, and ancient tombs covered in hieroglyphics.

However, the vast majority of individuals who are interested in traveling to these stunning ancient sites will be required to apply for a visa to enter Egypt. The process of obtaining a visa has, thankfully, been simplified by the Egyptian government, which is good news for many people.

Do Nigerian citizens need a visa to Egypt?

A valid tourist visa for Egypt is required for citizens of Nigeria. The typical length of stay is only thirty days, and the key itself is also only right for thirty days. When applying for a tourist visa in Egypt, the applicant is not necessary to have to be physically present.

Applying for an Egypt Visa On Arrival

To acquire an Egypt Visa On Arrival, qualified nationals of certain countries must wait until they have landed in Egypt before going through immigration. The visa-issuing counters at Egypt’s international airports and seaports are where you’ll want to apply for a Visa On Arrival. The Egyptian visa fee must be paid in local currency, and an exact change is required.

Although some visitors to Egypt can get a visa upon arrival, many more choose to get theirs in advance. Because the VOA covers all nationalities who can apply for an Egypt visa online, and because doing so provides more peace of mind because you know your access has been approved before making travel preparations, any VOA-eligible nationals can apply for an Egypt visa online.

Applying for an Egypt Visa Online (e-Visa)

You must submit your Egypt e-Visa application at least seven days before the date you plan to travel. You are required to submit your application via this website, which the Egyptian Ministry of Interior manages.

  • Make sure you have an account. You should expect to get a confirmation code sent to the email address you provided.

You need to bring the following items along with you when you travel to Egypt:

  • Your passport, which should be valid for travel for at least another half a year.
  • The paper version of the Egypt e-Visa
  • An itinerary for your trip A hotel reservation or a tour plan, depending on the type of trip you’re taking,
  • A formal letter of invitation from a host or Egyptian firm or organization is required (if applicable)

Unfortunately, those holding a passport from Nigeria CAN NOT APPLY FOR AN eVisa. You are respectfully encouraged to submit your visa application at one of Egypt’s Overseas Missions.

Applying for an Egypt Visa at an Embassy or Consulate

Anyone who does not qualify for an exemption from the Egypt visa criteria and who does not qualify to receive an Egypt Visa On Arrival or online must submit their application through an Egyptian embassy or consulate in either their home country or a nation a neighbor to Egypt.

  • The specific application differs from one country’s embassy or consulate to another if you are applying for a visa in that country’s embassy or consulate. Nevertheless, the following is an overview of the application process for Egyptian access:
  • Make an appointment by contacting the Egyptian Embassy or Consulate in the country you wish to visit.
  • Finish off your application for a visa to Egypt here. The embassy or consulate will have the application form for you to pick up.
  • Collect the necessary forms and documentation.
  • Make the payment for your Egypt visa.
  • Deliver the required paperwork and application to the Egyptian Embassy or Egyptian Consulate. Inquire with them about the procedure for submitting documents, as some offices demand that you hand in the paperwork in person, while others accept submissions not just in person but also through the mail.
  • If your application is accepted, the visa will be affixed to your passport, and you will either be able to pick it up or have it mailed back to you.
  • You may be required to pay the visa cost in advance through a bank transfer or at the actual visa counter within the embassy or consulate in cash. Verify the visa fee requirements with the Egyptian embassy or consulate of the country you wish to visit. Please see the following list of Egypt’s visa fees.
  • In addition, the consulate or embassy could demand an interview if they deem it necessary.

Note that even if you are a citizen of a country that is exempt from visa requirements or if you are qualified to apply for an e-Visa or VOA. If you want to remain in Egypt for an extended period, you must apply for an Egyptian visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate.

Egypt visa processing time

The amount of time required to obtain an Egypt visa is contingent on how the application was submitted. If you submit an application for the Visa On Arrival, you will either be granted access or have your request denied immediately.

Because the processing time for an Egypt e-Visa is around seven days, it is recommended that you submit your application at least seven days before you want to travel to Egypt.

The amount of time it takes to complete an application submitted to an embassy or consulate varies widely based on where the application is being processed. Because it takes at least ten working days in most situations, you should be sure to apply well when you intend to travel, but no earlier than three months in advance.

If you submit your application over the mail, you should also consider how long it will take for the paperwork to be mailed back and forth.

Duration of an Egypt Visa

The length of time an Egypt visa is valid is directly proportional to the number of entries it permits. As a result:

  • Both the Egypt Visa on Arrival and the Egypt e-Visa is valid for ninety days from the date they were issued. They only enable a single entry, although you can stay in Egypt for up to 30 days during that time, and they only work once.
  • Tourist visas for Egypt with a single entry are good for six months and allow you to remain in the country for up to sixty days.
  • Tourist visas for Egypt that enable multiple entries are good for six months and can be used to spend up to ninety days in the country.

Can you extend an Egypt Tourist Visa?

At the Egypt Passport and Immigration Administration, you can inquire about the possibility of extending your tourist visa in Egypt (also known as a short-term visa) for an additional ninety days. You are required to provide a photocopy of your passport, your valid Egypt visa, and sufficient funds to cover the cost of the processing fee.

Egypt Visa fees

The following is a list of the expenses associated with obtaining a tourist visa for purposes of travel using either an eVisa or a Visa On Arrival:

  • Single-entry visa: 25$
  • Multiple-entry visa: 60$

Tourist visa: 60.00 (USD)

Work visa: 60.00 (USD)

Student visa: 60.00 (USD)

Egypt Visa Requirements for Nigerians

If you’ve put plans in place to move to Egypt, then you will need to get the right things in order. As a Nigerian citizen, you will need an Egyptian visa to move to this African country. Getting an Egypt visa shouldn’t be difficult as long as you provide the right documents and go for the visa type that aligns with your visit.

In this article, we will answer all your questions as to the right visa type to go for as well as the visa requirements for Nigerians that wish to stay in Egypt or spend their holiday in the great country.

Types of Egypt Visa

Egypt Visa Requirements for Nigerians

Tourist Visa

Egypt tourist visas are offered to Nigerian citizens that want to spend their vacation or holiday in the country. This visa is only valid for a period of 30 days. The actual validity period is 3 months from the date of issue after which the visa will be invalid even if it was not used. The 30-day validity period starts counting from the moment you step into Egypt. This visa only permits you to take a view of tourist locations in Egypt but does not permit you to work.

Unlike a tourist visa that restricts you to tourist locations, the visitor visa allows you to do more. You can visit your family and friends as well as tourist locations. This visa type offers more benefits as it can be extended from the 30-day limit by your host while in Egypt.

Business Visa

Foreign nationals that want to make the visit to Egypt will be offered a Business Visa. If you’re also going to Egypt for a Business meeting, then you will need this visa. This visa type allows you to attend conferences, seminars, interviews, events and perform other business operations, however, it does not permit you to work in the country. Like the others, it will expire in 30 days.

If you wish to further your education in Egypt, then you can apply for a study visa. You will have to get admission from an approved university or institution in Egypt. You will need confirmation for admission to apply for the visa. The visa validity is determined by the embassy and can be extended to cover your entire study.

Medical Visa

This is a special type of visa offered to a traveler seeking medical aid in Egypt. This visa can be extended upon request from the hospital.

To get a visit, tourist, medical, study, or business visa to Egypt, you will have to provide the following documents and meet other requirements.

  • International passport – Your international passport must have at least two pages and be valid for more than three months after your proposed departure date from Egypt.
  • Filled visa application – You will have to completely fill the visa application form. Ensure the information provided in the visa application tally with what you have on your supporting documents. You could fill the form online and submit it online.
  • Passport photographs – You will be required to provide two copies of recently taken 2 x 2 inches passport photographs shot on a white background. The photograph must not be more than six months old and should capture the entirety of your face.
  • Bank statement – You will have to show proof of your financial capability.  To do this, you will have to present your bank statement. It must be properly signed and stamped and not older than 14 days. The statement itself must show records of up to 6 months.
  • Original copy of travel insurance certificate – The original policy document and one photocopy will have to be presented when you submit your documents for assessment.
  • Copy hotel reservation voucher – If you have no host in Egypt or you were not invited by a family, friend, or company, you will have to submit this to prove you have a place to stay. The reservation must remain valid throughout the entire duration of your visa application. The embassy could place a call to the hotel to confirm that the reservation is valid. This is not always the case with every type of visa application. Sometimes, the Embassy will discourage you from booking a hotel or making a payment until the visa is approved
  • Flight reservation – You will have to show your flight reservation that displays your entry and exit plans when visiting Egypt. This should contain your PNR, full names, and airline/flight details.
  • Proof of employment – If you’re employed, you should add a letter of employment from your employer or company stating that you’re a staff of the company. This should also indicate that you’ve been given a leave of absence and the number of days which you will be staying away from work. In addition, it should indicate that you will be returning back from work.
  • Company registration documents – If you own your business, you will have to provide your certificate of incorporation and other company registration documents.
  • Invitation letter – An invitation by a family, friend, or business partner in Egypt will have to be provided in writing. The letter should state your relationship with the person and when you will visit and depart from Egypt.

How long does it take to get an Egypt visa for Nigerian citizens in Nigeria?

This could take up to four weeks but could be shorter depending on your visa type as well as the schedule of the Egypt embassy.

Can you fill the visa application form online?

Yes, the Egypt visa application form is available online. You might also be able to fill it in person but that could require a visit to the Egypt Embassy. If you are not able to get things in order on your own, then perhaps, handing it over to a visa application agency will help you get things done quickly and get your visa approved.
