What To Expect

EPHESUS & THE HOUSE OF VIRGIN MARY TOURS AND FROM KUSADASİ CRUİSE PORTS Ephesus is one of the world’s richest and most rewarding archaeological sites with impressive ruins dating from the Classical Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine periods. It is also closely associated with the beginnings of the Christian faith. In addition to being the city to which the Letters to the Ephesians were written, St. John and St. Paul both visited the city, and the Virgin Mary herself is said to have spent her last days nearby. Among the highlights of our tour of Ephesus will be the Antique theatre, the famed Library of Celsus, the brothel, the Mosque of Isabey, the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and a group of recently excavated early Byzantine mansions that feature incredibly well-preserved floor mosaics and frescoes. At Ephesus, the past comes to life in a pageantry of architectural and artistic marvels the like of which can be found almost nowhere else in the world. Finally we will make a short pilgrimage to the House of the Virgin Mary, which stands high on a mountainside overlooking the Aegean Sea and the Greek island of Samos.

With a long history and culture all its own, Kusadasi is slowly rising as a great travel destination for travelers all around the world.

Enjoy fresh fish customary to this port town or try out some traditional Turkish food. Cheese rolls made of phyllo dough covered in ricotta cheese are a local favorite. Try these and other Turkish delights as you take in the amazing scenery of the area.

Dine at waterfront cafes that look out over gleaming, perfectly blue waters. The tall mountaintop of Pilva Dagi is the perfect backdrop to your view as you have your delicious meal.

Take a day trip to Dilek Peninsula National Park, also called Milli Park, for a fun day at the beach including hiking, swimming, biking, and other activities.

Our Kusadasi cruise excursions offer you an exclusive look at one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, the ancient city of Ephesus.

Ephesus was an ancient Greek and Roman city that holds so much history that it's referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Your tour guide will take you through the ruins of Ephesus to view the Temple of Artemis and the Temple of Hadrian.

The newly excavated area across from the Temple of Hadrian features houses of some of the wealthiest citizens that lived during that time. Their interiors feature beautiful mosaics and colorful frescoes owned only by the richest people. They even had heating pipes and running water.

You will also visit the Odeon, the two-level Library of Celsus. This impressive ancient roman building houses over 12,000 scrolls. It was well visited by many of the top scholars and was a place of learning.

The Virgin Mary House, located at the top of Nightingale Mountain, is a site you'll surely not want to miss. This is the very house where people believe she spent her last years. Entire pilgrimages and even some popes have trips to visit this small brick house.

You can also see the astonishing Grand Theater where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians.

Located 18 miles north of Ephesus is the city of Priene. Here you can see the ruins of the Temple of Athena and even find remnants of the wall that surrounded the city.

About 14 miles from Priene, you'll find the city of Miletus. This city was known for having a large Roman amphitheater. Gladiator matches and other grand spectacles were held here. Imagine sitting in the same seats where people used to watch gladiators fight to the death.

12 miles away from Miletus, you'll find the city of Didyma. This city contains ruins of the Temple of Apollo. This temple, built around 550 B.C., was supported by an incredible 112 columns.

These are the most well-preserved ancient sites across the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Discover the endless history and beauty of Ephesus privately or with a small group. Learn about the Ionian history, and experience traditional Turkish village life as soon as you arrive at the Kusadasi Port.

Excellent trip.We booked this through Thomas Cook, and had a really knowledgable guide who took us through the history of the place. It was a great expereince, but it’s very open, so bring water and a cap!
Outstanding tour. We have taken many tours over the years and this was definitely the best! Oscar our guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to really connect with each of us. The tour was totally customized to our desires. Will definitely tour with the tours by locals from now on!

Cathy Drescher

Ephesus was amazing and so was our tour guide, Cigdem Goktas. Cigdem’s English was good and she was very knowledgeable about the areas that we visited: the house of Mary, the ruins of the city of Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis…. We learned so much history from her. Reliable Travel connected us with Cigdem who is an independent tourist guide. I would definitely recommend her.

Ephesus images, faq about ephesus tour from kusadasi port.

All guides wait otside the terminal and they hold a sign with their guest’s name.

You will need Turkish lira to buy the entrances. In all sights (except the House of Mary) you can purchase the entrance with credit card. If you do not have any Turkish lira on the day of the tour, your guide can pay for the entrances and you can pay him back at the end of the tour in USD or euros. If you decide to book Ephesus tour, we can also give you the price that includes the entrances.

All the vehicles are non-smoking and air-conditioned. We usually use Mercedes Sprinter and Mercedes Vito. You can see our vehicles

The driving distance from Kusadasi to Ephesus is 30 minutes.

You can pay in advance (bank transfer, credit card or PayPal – there is a small additional fee for this kind of payment), or you can pay cash to your guide at the end of the tour.

During the high season, on some busy days, there are 4-5 cruise ships in Kusadasi port and thousands of people visiting the sight. Local guides have priority for buying entrances, so it is also one of advantages of taking a private tour of Ephesus .

It can be very hot, 38 ºC (100.4 ºF) ir even more, and since there is not much shade in Ephesus, we advise you to bring hat, umbrella and water…

We usually spend around 2 hours in Ephesus, which is enough time to see all the most important parts of this sight. However, our private Ephesus tours are tailor made, so we do not limit our guests time for sightseeing. It all depends on your interests and available time.

No, it is definitely not difficult anymore, as there are new, additional wooden paths for wheelchairs inside of Ephesus.

During religious holidays and on Sundays there is a mass organizes in Virgin Mary’s House and everybody can join it. It is also possible to arrange a private mass for groups. If you are interested in this option, a priest must be informed in advance.

This Temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world. There is only one column left there. But it is nice to hear the history of the place, so that you can understand Ephesus better.

During our tours, we never make any shopping stop, unless the customer requires so. All the tours are tailor made. So our guests decide where to go and how much time to spend in each sight. Even if you are not on the market for carpets, it may be interesting for you to see this demonstration as a part of Turkish culture.

Window Into Ancient Life

A close up view of the Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Turkey

Don't miss the Library of Celsus or the Scholastica Baths — their dozen ancient marble toilets are a unique sight from antiquity. Consider buying the extra ticket to see Ephesus' Terraced Houses. Not only are they shaded, but you get a sense of what ancient life was like and can see the restoration work in progress.

The home of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus, Turkey

Set Your Sights on Selcuk

The home of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus, Turkey

Walk from Ephesus' Lower Gate to the village of Selcuk, where you can visit what's said to be the burial site of John the Apostle at the Basilica of St. John. You'll also find the remains of the Temple of Artemis. About five miles from here lies the House of the Virgin Mary, which traditions holds as the last place she lived.

Homemade carpets on a cart

Haggle for a Turkish Carpet

Stroll the seaside promenade in Kusadasi to catch a cooling breeze. Shop for souvenirs like carpets and spices in the bazaar near the port. Vendors will encourage you to sample their wares and will offer tea to serious carpet buyers. You can also visit Pigeon Island for views from the Byzantine castle once used by pirates during your Turkey cruise.

Two lamb kebobs on a black plate

Local Cuisine

Most visitors will have tried sis kebab (grilled meat on a skewer) and doner kebab (meat shaved from a vertical skewer) before arriving in Turkey. Lamb is popular for both. Be sure to try kofte , spiced lamb or beef meatballs served with yogurt dipping sauce. Have a few meze (appetizers) to get your vegetable fix — great options include grilled eggplant salad and cicek dolmasi , fried squash flowers stuffed with raisins and rice.

An assortment of colorful pottery in Turkey

The Kusadasi bazaar is naturally the place to go for shopping. A Turkish blue eye, meant to ward off the evil eye, makes a great souvenir. Also consider a traditional Turkish kilim (a woven carpet) or a more luxurious knotted carpet. Cruise to Ephesus and look for handmade tiles and pottery in the Iznik design, with floral-inspired geometric patterns. Prices are negotiable, and the first offer by the vendor will be at least double what you should pay.

Exploring Ephesus on a Cruise Excursion

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

An Ephesus cruise excursion is easily the highlight of a Mediterranean cruise itinerary , especially for lovers of antiquity. The fourth largest city in the eastern Roman Empire during the 2nd century BC, the city’s amenities included a library and medical school. I certainly enjoyed my one day in Ephesus while on a Mediterranean cruise.

Today, visitors to Ephesus marvel at the ruins of the UNESCO World Heritage site . And it’s a very popular excursion when Mediterranean cruises call on Kusadasi, Turkey. If you’re curious about visiting Ephesus from a cruise ship, read on!

What to expect on an Ephesus cruise excursion

Roman columns rest against each other on the ground at Ephesus.

Standing at the top of the hill in Ephesus, near the Magnesia Gate (south entrance), I look around to see artifacts scattered on the ground as if someone forgot to put the giant pieces of a puzzle together. Considering the numerous earthquakes that have occurred in the area through the centuries, there’s a strong likelihood that this puzzle will never be completed.

Are you planning a cruise? Use our Luxury Cruise Travel Planner to begin your research.

I’ve visited numerous antiquity sites around the world including Rome , Pompeii, the Pyramids and even Anasazi cliff dwellings in the Southwestern U.S. Although these sites always impress me, none compare to Ephesus, in my opinion.

Stone stairs lead to more ruins on an Ephesus shore excursion.

I explored the ancient Roman city on an Ephesus cruise excursion with Royal Prince Cruise ( check itineraries here ) when the ship docked in Kusadasi, Turkey. Along with approximately 20 other cruise guests, I boarded a small bus right after breakfast for the 45-minute ride to the Magnesia Gate and the beginning of an early morning tour.

Did you know that Ephesus has been rebuilt at numerous times and not all in the same location? More surprisingly, the ancient city once fronted the Agean Sea before the Cayster (Kucuk Menderes) River began filling up with silt. Those are just two of the facts that I learned from tour guide, Regina, on the ride to Site #3, the Ephesus of Roman and early Christian times.

Boomer Travel Tip

Will you be cruising in the Mediterranean? Before booking an excursion, check out our Mediterranean shore excursion reviews.

Start your Ephesus tour at the Magnesia Gate

Be sure to use the clean bathrooms at the Magnesia Gate before you enter Ephesus. Cost to use them is 50E. The next facilities are located at the end of your 3 to 4-hour tour.

After entering the gate, our group circled around Regina near the edge of an empty field littered with archaeological artifacts as she began her explanations.

“Approximately 90% of Ephesus has yet to be uncovered,” Regina told us.

My mind reeled with the possibilities of what was located beneath the very ground where I stood.

The stone arched front of the Temple of Hadrian.

As we walked along the main trail, Regina described how the city was organized into sections for commercial, political, and educational uses. Yes, city planning existed long ago, a reminder that modern-day man is not solely responsible for the advances in civilization despite our big egos that let us think so.

The two-storied Library of Celsus in Ephesus.

Beginning our descent down the hill along Curetes Way, more of Ephesus revealed itself, with many well-defined structures to explore. The imposing Library of Clesus stood at the bottom of the hill and was easily the most impressive structure of the archaeological site.

Purchase a separate ticket to see the Terrace Houses

Terrace houses being excavated in Ephesus, Turkey.

Our tickets included admission to the Terrace Houses where archaeologists are painstakingly reconstructing the homes of wealthy Ephesians—tile by mosaic tile. Protected by a canvas roof, the site is still being restored while visitors view the progress from plexiglass walkways suspended over the homes.

Purchasing a ticket to visit Ephesus does not include entrance to the Terrace Houses, House of Mary, Archaeological Museum of Ephesus or Basilica of St. John, all of which require separate tickets.

By the time our tour ended (near the public restrooms), the crowds had increased and the temperature was soaring. Time was allowed for browsing the stores that line the road on the way to the amphitheater. You’ll find trinkets, souvenirs and persistent shopkeepers and hawkers. I recommend saving any major shopping, like jewelry, for Kusadasi.

The air-conditioned bus was a welcome relief. On the ride back to the Royal Princess, one of Regina’s comments kept playing in my mind. “Approximately 90% of Ephesus has yet to be uncovered.” Think of the possibilities.

Crowds line the streets by midday in Ephesus, Turkey.

Tips for visiting Ephesus from a cruise ship:

  • Bring 50E to use the bathroom before entering the site, if you enter from the Magnesia Gate.
  • Bring sun protection: sunscreen , hat and water. It’s hot during August!
  • Find shady spots to rest while the tour guide talks to conserve energy in the heat.
  • Book the earliest excursion possible to avoid crowds and the heat of the day.
  • Watch your step as ground is uneven and the marble is slippery
  • Don’t pet the stray cats and dogs that are everywhere. They have not been inoculated.
  • Know the exchange rate, if you’re planning to purchase souvenirs.
  • Attending a concert excursion at the amphitheater doesn’t guarantee a visit to the rest of Ephesus.

Read our tips for surviving a summer Mediterranean Cruise . It’s going to be hot!

More Mediterranean cruise excursions with an emphasis on archaeology:

  • Explore Selinunte Archaeological Park on cruise excursion from Trapani, Sicily.
  • Visit the ancient city of Nora when your ship calls on Cagliari, Sardinia.
  • Experience Greek and Roman history on a Syracuse shore excursion in Sicily.

Disclosure: Princess Cruise lines provided this travel experience. As always, the opinions are my own.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

Kusadasi in Turkey is the gateway to one of the most legendary cities of the ancient world: Ephesus. St. Paul preached in its Great Theater, while the facade of the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a center of learning and culture.

Not far from Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana), one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, once stood, drawing pilgrims from around the Mediterranean. While it no longer stands, it is possible to walk amongst its foundations and the remains of its towering columns.

Other historic sites can also be found nearby: The House of Mary is believed to be the home of Jesus’s mother at the end of her life, and the Basilica of St. John, constructed in the 6th century, marks the location of his tomb. (Like Mary, he spent his final years in Ephesus.) Nearby, the Selcuk fortress reflects the period of Byzantine and Ottoman control of the region.

From ancient wonders to holy sites, there are few ports in the Mediterranean as magical as Kusadasi, and a day here is a day spent in the company of some of antiquity's greatest figures.

How do I get from Kusadasi Cruise Port to Ephesus?

Ancient city of Ephesus

There are several transportation options available; the most common ways to travel from Kusadasi Cruise Port to Ephesus are by taking a minibus (dolmuş), hiring a taxi , or joining a guided tour .

Transportation from the port to Ephesus by Minibus

Inside of Great Theatre in Ephesus

You can go to Ephesus from the port by minibus. It is a shared transportation option and is relatively inexpensive compared to other transportation methods. Since there is no direct minibus from the port to the ancient city, you must use two total minibusses by transfer. Let’s examine step by step how you can reach by minibus.

Exiting from the port and going to the minibus stop

Exiting from the port and taking a city minibus 2

To catch a bus to Ephesus’s main inter-county bus stop, you will need to walk approximately 4 minutes from the Kusadasi Cruise Port premises to the first bus stop. Exit from the Scala Nuova Shopping Centre and walk straight ahead until you see the sign “D” indicating the bus stop. Once you reach the bus stop, wait for the “ Number 5 ” bus to arrive. Prior to leaving the port premises, you can access ATMs and restrooms for your convenience. Additionally, there is an exchange office near the bus stop where you will be waiting, providing the opportunity to obtain Turkish Lira to pay the minibus fee.

Taking the number 5 minibus

Dolmus in Kusadasi scaled 1

Here it comes our Number 5 Minibus, which is supposed to take us to the Main Town Center Bus Stop where inter-county busses are located. We get into Number 5 and say ‘cellchouck’ (sounding – meaning ‘SELCUK’ in Turkish) is the name of the town we should be going to for Ephesus. So our driver on Number 5 knows where he is dropping us off. The ride from Kusadasi Cruise Port to the town’s center must take 10 minutes. And we pay straight to the driver; it should cost 50C. euros. Don’t worry if you do not carry Turkish Lira; you can pay minibus drivers in Euros.

Going to the town center and taking the Ephesus minibus

Selcuk Ephesus Kusadasi Minibus Transport from to Kusadasi

Once Minibus Number 5 drops us off at the roundabout where the inter-county Bus stop is, we need to locate our second minibus with ‘SELCUK’ written on its front. We must cross the street to get to the buses bound for Selcuk. In winter, minibusses to Selcuk run every 20-25 minutes, while in summer, they run almost every 10-15 minutes. However, there might be some confusion as several lines also stop at the same location. To avoid any confusion, we must look for the minibus with ‘SELCUK’ written on it. Once we find the right minibus, we can board it for our journey from Kusadasi Town Center to Selcuk, which should take approximately 20 minutes. The minibus will make stops at some of the hotels on the coast just outside Kusadasi. We should prepare around 1.5 Euros to hand over to the driver and say ‘EPHESUS’ or ‘EFES’ to indicate our destination.

Reaching Ephesus minibus stop

Minibus Stop to Ephesus

When the driver arrives at the Efes stop, he will shout, “Ephesus”. We have to get off the minibus at this stop. When we get off the minibus, we will see a taxi stand. Ephesus has a total of two gates , the lower and upper gates. The lower gate is about 12 minutes away on foot, while the upper gate takes 43 minutes. You can walk to the lower gate or take a taxi from your stop. Here we can continue our step, assuming that you will walk to the nearest gate, the lower gate.

Walking to the lower entrance gate of Ephesus

From here, you can walk approximately 12 minutes to the lower entrance gate of Ephesus from the side of the road.

Reaching and entering Ephesus

Lower Gate of Ephesus

After reaching the lower gate, you can enter Ephesus by passing through the security control and toll booths. You can pay the Ephesus Archeological Site entrance fee of 40 Euros (2024) with cash or a credit card. Since there is no toilet in Ephesus, you can use the public toilets after entering. Have a nice trip!

Seven of the best after-dark adventures at sea

Ships by night aren’t all cocktails and casinos — from camping in antarctica to illuminated venice, these incredible cruise experiences only happen once the sun sets.

Chase the northern lights with Havila Voyages

T here’s more to evenings on a cruise than cocktails, casinos and crooners. Whether it’s a private view of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice or camping on the Antarctic ice that floats your boat, here are seven evening cruise activities that might surprise you.

This article contains affiliate links, which can earn us revenue

1. Sleep under the stars on deck in the Med

Spend the night on deck

The ultra-luxurious SeaDream Yacht Club encourages guests to try a night under the stars on deck, with duvets, pillows and even monogrammed pyjamas provided. The best spot is the oversized lounger on the foredeck, completely private and roped off from the rest of the ship once you’ve retired. Scattered rose petals and chilled champagne add to the romance — and if the wind picks up you can always retreat to your cabin. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from Athens to Valletta from £5,354pp, departing on August 3 (seadream.com). Fly to Athens

2. See Ephesus in Turkey without the crowds

Ephesus

Imagine wandering around the 3,000-year-old ruins of Ephesus in Turkey when the hordes have gone, the ancient stones still reflecting the day’s heat as the light fades. This after-hours exclusive experience, which includes cocktails and a magical choral recital under the stars in the Roman theatre, is one of Azamara’s “AzAmazing Evenings” special cultural events on every cruise. Details Ten nights’ all-inclusive from Athens to Istanbul from £1,471pp, departing on July 31 (azamara.com). Fly to Athens

3. Camp on the ice in Antarctica

Keep an ear out for nearby penguins

Snuggling up under canvas in a sleeping bag is such a popular activity on Hurtigruten’s Antarctic expeditions that you have to enter a lottery to secure your place for camping on the ice. After dinner on board an expedition team sets forth to put the tents up. Once you’re installed, sit and listen to the sounds of nature; the gentle crackling of the ice, the whisper of the wind and the chatter of nearby penguin colonies. Make sure you’re up to watch the sunrise before heading back to the ship for breakfast. Details Eleven nights’ all-inclusive from £7,1725pp, departing on November 27 (travelhx.com). Fly to Buenos Aires

4. chase the aurora in norway with an astronomer.

This year and next are peak times for viewing the northern lights. Havila Voyages is offering 11-night astronomy cruises to take advantage of the increased solar activity, with Ian Ridpath, editor of the Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy , escorting the October departure. He will deliver lectures on the aurora, constellations, comets and the moon landings as the ship sails a round-trip from Bergen to Kirkenes in the far north of Norway, with the crew on constant lookout for those dancing lights in the night sky. Details Eleven nights’ full board from £1,308pp, departing on October 30 (havilavoyages.com). Fly to Bergen

5. Watch fruit bats in Indonesia

Raja Ampat in Indonesia

When the luxurious superyacht Aqua Blu is anchored off the Indonesian island of Mioskon on its cruises around jungly Raja Ampat, passengers can witness an extraordinary event. As darkness falls, thousands of fruit bats launch themselves from the trees, twittering as they stream across the fading sunset and filling the sky overhead. Marvel at this spectacle from one of the ship’s tenders, complete with cocktails and canapés, before heading back on board for dinner. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £7,444pp, including all activities, departing on December 21 (aquaexpeditions.com). Fly to Sorong

6. Have St Mark’s in Venice to yourself

St Mark’s Basilica

Imagine seeing the golden mosaics and exquisite marble of St Mark’s Basilica after sunset, without a selfie stick in sight. Uniworld has after-hours access to this glorious 11th-century cathedral for its cruises from Venice, and you’re in for a treat. Once the day trippers have left you’ll sit in a pew in front of the gleaming golden altar, before the lights are switched off and you’re plunged into darkness; one by one they come on again, illuminating the exquisite detail of the interior — it’s a true goose-bump experience. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £2,799pp, departing on September 8 (uniworld.com). Fly to Venice

7. Toast marshmallows around a campfire in Mexico

On an UnCruise expedition around the Sea of Cortez off Mexico you’ll spend most of your time spotting super-pods of whales and dolphins and hiking the cactus-strewn mountains that frame this sheltered sea. But one of the best moments is when the crew head ashore to build a beach bonfire. After dinner you’re ferried across in darkness to sit around the fire, toasting marshmallows, drinking rum-laced hot chocolate, looking at the canopy of glittering stars and listening to the crackling of the flames. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £6,770pp, including flights and a night at a Los Angeles hotel pre-cruise, departing on January 17 (mundyadventures.co.uk)
