Whether you’re a cruiser, a road tripper, or just someone looking for a new adventure, there are many intriguing things to do in Erie, PA. Let’s dive into them and explore this charming city together!

1. Experience Presque Isle

First on our list, Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie. This natural wonder, Pennsylvania’s most beloved state park, offers visitors over 13 miles of sandy beaches, scenic trails, and breathtaking natural beauty. You can take a dip in the lake or try hiking or biking on the many trails. Fishing is prevalent, with bass, trout, and walleye being the prize catches.

Additionally, you can relax on the shark-free beach or explore the lagoons and wetlands with their diverse wildlife. A very unique feature at Presque Isle is the opportunity to rent houseboats. It is also one of the top spots in the country for world-class birdwatching.

In 2016, USA Today Reader’s Choice named Presque Isle the Best Freshwater Beach in the Country.

2. Wander the Erie Maritime Museum

Located on Erie’s waterfront, the Erie Maritime Museum celebrates the city’s rich maritime history. The museum has exhibits showcasing the U.S. Brig Niagara, which played a significant role in the War of 1812, and other naval and commercial vessels of the region.

You can explore the decks of the historic ships and learn about the city’s industrial heritage. Please note that this attraction is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for youth 3 to 11.

For those looking for amusement, Waldameer Park and Water World is the perfect destination. This popular amusement park offers dozens of rides, slides, and attractions. The list of classic rides includes dodgem cars, flying swings, paratrooper, scrambler, and a Ferris wheel. There are thrill rides, too, like coasters and water rides for bigger kids and adults.

The water slide collection at Waldameer Park and Water World has 19 slides, an endless river, and a wave pool. Waldameer Park and Water World provide endless fun for kids and adults alike and have been for over 120 years. It is the 10th oldest amusement park in the country.

4. Be a Kid Again at the Erie Zoo

Another place to explore nature and wildlife, the Erie Zoo is home to over 400 animals from 150 species. And then there are botanical gardens and greenhouses, offering more reason to visit. The Erie Zoo features African and North American exhibits, a petting zoo, and a children’s area. You’ll encounter giraffes, tigers, and orangutans and learn about their natural habitats.

Fun Fact:  It should only take two hours to go through this small but mighty zoo. Come the last two hours of opening on Sundays for free admission. 

5. Explore Tom Ridge Environmental Center

A perfect place for those who love nature and want to learn about it is the Tom Ridge Environmental Center . This 6,500-square-ft. National Landmark offers hands-on exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs for visitors of all ages. There is also a fantastic nature shop.

Research is continual at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. They work hard at promoting conservation efforts and environmental awareness.

With its four-story glass-enclosed tower at 75 feet, you can also get stunning aerial views of Lake Erie and Presque Isle. My favorite part was the three towers showcasing 75 whimsical hand-carved wooden vignette whirligigs.

6. Photograph the Erie Harbor North Pier LIght

Erie’s North Pier Light, a stunning 34-foot high black and white pierhead light, stands at the end of the Erie Harbor Channel. This beacon, built in 1858, aided navigation at the channel’s opening, connecting Lake Erie to Presque Isle Bay.

The lighthouse is best viewed at sunset when it glistens in the moonlit water.

7. Indulge in Some Great Eats 

In Erie’s West Side neighborhood, Pineapple Eddie’s Southern Bistro offers delectable cuisine influenced by the South and Caribbean. Highly recommended are the Crabmeat Hushpuppies (remoulade sauce) and Beef Empanadas, perfect for sharing.

The Poulè Sautè, a superb dinner option, features a chicken breast sautéed with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, baby spinach, and creamy Havarti cheese. Mashed potatoes and veggies accompany it. Save room for the homemade desserts.

My favorite eatery in Erie was Cloud 9 , a downtown Erie gem featuring a sophisticated farm-to-table menu with locally-sourced delights. Must-tries include the Burrata Fromage (spinach, pesto, and tomatoes with pita chips) and Walnut Crusted Brie with cranberry mostarda.

For your main course, you can’t go wrong with the Garlic Shrimp Pasta or Chicken Romesco and a glass of artisanal wine.

For a casual dining experience, consider Sara’s Restaurant —a charming, retro diner inspired by the 1950s-era and carhops. Indulge in delicious American fare like burgers, char-grilled hot dogs, fries, and homemade onion rings, complemented by Parmesan-topped fried zucchini fries.

Sara’s offers an assortment of signature sauces and a wide array of condiments at their honkin’ big condiments bar. Take advantage of their thick shakes, orange sherbet, or vanilla soft serve, and satisfy your sweet tooth at the build-your-own-sundae bar.

Erie is a city of about 100,000 in Northwestern Pennsylvania . It is Pennsylvania's only lake port on the Great Lakes (Lake Erie).

Erie is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state of Pennsylvania. However, in terms of size and stature, there is a clear gulf between the first and second cities ( Philadelphia and Pittsburgh ) and the second-tier cities, like Erie, Allentown, Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre , and Harrisburg . Erie is roughly in the center of Pennsylvania's only coastline, bordering Lake Erie. The city sits on Presque Isle Bay, which is formed by a long, narrow peninsula known as Presque Isle that reaches from the west around the north of the city.

Erie was founded in 1795 after the purchase of the surrounding territory from New York . It made its mark on history during the early 19th century, when Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's small fleet of warships used the bay (then known as Misery Bay) to regroup and repair between skirmishes with the British fleet on Lake Erie. (A reconstruction of the Brig "Niagara" can be found at the Erie Maritime Museum.)

The late nineteenth century brought industrial development, primarily heavy equipment and the locomotive industry. Like many other cities in the so-called rust belt, this development has slowly withered away to outside competition, with the notable exception being General Electric, which maintains a large and active presence in the rail industry (GE Rail).

Erie's climate is similar to most of the Northern United States, but with a big winter twist known as lake effect snow. Snowfall amounts vary wildly within a 40 mi (64 km) zone south of the lake. Most of the time the immediate vicinity of the lake receives light snowfall, and the range from three to fifteen miles receives a whollop. Snowfalls are also generally heavier as you go east. The NY/PA border region typically receives the most snow until you move far enough away from the lake for the effects to diminish. The roads are well maintained, but some snow squalls come on so suddenly, it is impossible to keep up. If you are driving in the winter, be prepared with emergency gear. The good news is that by January, it is often cold enough for Lake Erie to freeze over, greatly diminishing the lake effect.

Erie has a Greyhound Bus Station across from the Library and Maritime Museum. Buses come and go frequently from Buffalo and Cleveland . Erie can be accessed from New York City , Chicago , and Toronto typically with only one transfer. City buses stop at the station, so you can visit parts of the city without a taxi or car, although you will have less freedom.

By train [ edit ]

• Lake Shore Limited operating daily between Chicago and Boston or New York City . It makes stops at most stations along the route, though it does not stop at some of the smallest stations. Trains consist of train cars from both branches between Chicago and Albany ( Rensselaer ). The trains split into separate branches between Albany (Rensselaer) and both Boston and New York City. Stops between Chicago and Albany (Rensselaer) include South Bend , Elkhart , Waterloo, Bryan , Toledo , Sandusky , Elyria , Cleveland , Erie, Buffalo ( Depew ), Rochester , Syracuse , Utica , and Schenectady . Stops between Albany (Rensselaer) and Boston include Pittsfield , Springfield , Worcester , Framingham . Stops between Albany (Rensselaer) and New York City include Rhinecliff , Poughkeepsie , and Croton-on-Hudson . Eastbound trains call at Erie in the middle of the night while westbound trains have a more reasonable departure time around 7AM.

By car [ edit ]

Erie is easily accessible via Interstate 90 and 79. The Bayfront Connector Highway links the northern terminus of I-79 through the city along the bayfront and then through the industrial East Side and newer housing and office developments around Knowledge Park and Penn State University (Behrend College). The highway is 3-4 lanes, but has few buildings or side streets that connect directly with the road, making traffic relatively smooth and making it much easier to get in and out of the downtown. The highway is a scenic detour away from the traffic and strip malls of I-90 south of Erie.

Get around [ edit ]

Erie is laid out in an easy to understand grid pattern paralleling the Lake Erie coastline. Numbered streets starting with the northern most 2nd Street run roughly east-west. (The bayfront highway loops around this grid, taking the place of what would be a "1st Street". Major E/W thoroughfares are 6th, 12th, 26th and 38th Street. The center of town is split north-south by State Street. N/S streets on the west side of town are typically named after trees (Peach, Poplar, Chestnut) and on the east side after countries (French, German, Holland). The two major north-south routes through the center of town are State and Peach (Peach diverges to the southwest after 26th street.) Major N/S streets listed from west to east are Pittsburgh, Greengarden, Liberty, Chestnut, Peach, State, French, Parade, East. As you can see, this naming convention is not hard and fast, and breaks down in all directions the further you get from the city center. The suburbs of Fairview, Millcreek, Harborcreek, Lawrence Park and Wesleyville also stick to this rough grid pattern to some degree as you move away from the city.

Bus ( EMTA ) service primarily stretches from Fairview in the west to Harborcreek in the east, and south to the I-90/Peach Street shopping district. Regional shuttles connect the outlying communities of Edinboro, Waterford, Corry, Union City, Girard and Albion. EMTA is available by phone at ☏ +1 814 452-3515 .

Taxis are rare in Erie. Taxi services are provided by Hansen's Errand Service where pre-booking is needed. Other options are Uber and Lyft.

The main shopping area in Erie is centered around Peach Street , south of the city to its junction with I-90. Many of the typical national chains can be found, many of which are contained in Millcreek Mall, a sprawling single-story mall/strip complex.

Smaller niche shopping is available on the west side of the city in plazas on West 8th, 12th, and 26th Streets. The downtown also has a few stores, but has not been a large retail draw since the late 1970s.

Erie is a popular shopping destination because of Pennsylvania's waiver of sales tax on clothing. Many people from the surrounding states and Ontario make special trips to Erie for this reason.

Eat [ edit ]

Erie has a few local foods unique to the area that you might want to try:

Greek Sauce - It's kind of like hot dog chili, but with different spices, and usually put on hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as other things. The local chain New York Lunch claims to have the 'original' Greek Sauce, and many would agree that theirs is the best.

Ox Roast - Thin sliced beef cooked in a beef broth, usually eaten as an Ox Roast Sandwich.

Pepperoni Balls and Pepperoni Bread - Italian Bread with pepperoni baked inside.

Smith's Hot Dogs - A hot dog brand local to the area that is very tasty. They are so well liked that there are stories of people from Erie who moved to other parts of the country having Smith's Hot Dogs overnighted to their new home. Good for camping and grilling out.

There are plenty of chain restaurants in Erie as well as ethnic and local places to eat. Peach Street has a large concentration of restaurants as does downtown Erie.

Hotels are concentrated along the heavily travelled Interstate 90 corridor, primarily at the Peach and State St. exits. There are also a number of chain and locally based hotels and motels along Interstate 79 north of I-90 and to the west on 12th and 26th streets towards Presque Isle. Finally, the downtown offers a third option, offering anything from barebones motel to full-service hotel to bed and breakfast.

Stay safe [ edit ]

As in the rest of North America, the emergency number for fire, police, and ambulatory services is 911. The city of Erie is served by the Erie City Police Department, while Millcreek is served by the Millcreek Township Police Department. All ambulatory services are served by EmergyCare.

Erie, for the most part, is safe, and an average tourist will have no problems with violent crime, especially in Millcreek, where the mall and other shopping areas are. The East Side, especially near lower Parade Street, can be more urban and rough, but the people are mainly working class immigrants for the most part, and will not cause a problem. Near the General Electric plant near Harborcreek, however, the depressed, formerly industrial neighbourhoods can breed much in the way of criminal activity; it's recommended that a tourist avoid these areas, although these areas do not offer much in the way of what a visitor would wish to see to begin with.

Perry Square in Erie's urban core has multiple bars that are frequented on weekends by both rowdy college kids from Gannon and middle-aged professionals; one must be extremely careful when driving downtown overnight, especially after final call at 1:30AM.

Other than these notes, one should just use common sense; avoid flashing expensive articles while in thickly populated areas such as downtown Erie.

15 Great Things to Do at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA

In many ways, Presque Isle State Park seems like God’s apology to Erie for the area’s terrible winters. That’s because Presque Isle is a summer playground that offers a ton of fantastic activities for any outdoor lover. Whether you live in the area or are just looking for a great summer destination, Presque Isle is a great choice.

Presque Isle (which means “almost an island” in French), is a peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie from the city of Erie, Pennsylvania . The peninsula was used by Native Americans prior to the arrival of European settlers and was the site of British, French, and American forts in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Today, Presque Isle State Park receives more than four million visitors a year, making it the most visited state park in Pennsylvania . Whether you love relaxing on the beach, learning about history, or being active, there are a lot of great reasons to visit this park in the Great Lakes Region of Pennsylvania .

Here are a few of my favorite things to do at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA.

The Presque Isle Beaches

If you love beaches, you’ll love Presque Isle State Park. There are a total of 13 different beaches at Presque Isle, each with its own unique character. Whether you love sunbathing, walking the beach, or playing in the sand, Presque Isle’s beaches are sure to provide you with a ton of enjoyment.

The beaches are all on the lake side of the park (as opposed to the bay and city side) and offer waves for those that enjoy playing in the water. Beach 11, which is the furthest beach from the entrance, is protected by the geography of the peninsula and is especially popular with families.

While all the beaches are sandy, they each offer different amenities such as changing rooms, food stands, volleyball courts, and more.

Swimming in Lake Erie

While the Presque Isle beaches are open daily from dawn to dusk, swimming is only allowed during hours that lifeguards are present.

Swimming in the lake offers the chance to enjoy its surprisingly warm waters and cool off on a hot day. The water here is quite refreshing and the small waves make it very different from swimming in the many other lakes in PA.

Lifeguards are on a duty from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day from noon to 7:30pm. A few of the beaches don’t have lifeguards, so you’ll have to stick to the land in those spots throughout the year.

Presque Isle Boat Tours

Presque Isle Boat Tours’ Lady Kate is a touring boat that docks near the Commodore Perry Monument in Presque Isle State Park. Tours are offered several times daily during the summer months, as well on weekends in spring and September.

Sightseeing tours are approximately 90-minutes long and travel through Misery Bay, Presque Isle Bay, and even out onto Lake Erie. Along the way, guides offer narration of the various sights around Presque Isle and the history of the area.

If you want to get out on the lake and don’t have your own boat, these tours are a great option.

Presque Isle Lighthouse

Presque Isle Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful and historic spots in Presque Isle State Park. This lighthouse dates back to the 1870s and still serves as a navigational beacon for passing ships.

For a small fee, visitors can go inside the lighthouse keeper’s home and learn more about the history of the area and what life was like on Presque Isle before its development. Then, visitors can climb the steps to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of Lake Erie and the park.

Kayaking in Presque Isle is an absolutely fantastic warm-weather activity. There are many spots to put in your own boat, or you can rent a kayak near Graveyard Pond.

Thanks to the shallow ponds that are located in the interior of Presque Isle State Park, this is a perfect activity for any experience level and allows you to see parts of the park that are unreachable by land.

If you’re feeling a bit braver, you can also take your kayaking out onto Misery Bay, Horseshoe Pond, or Presque Isle Bay.

Bird Watching

Birdwatchers are in for a treat as birding at Presque Isle is another very popular activity. Over 300 different avian species have been documented in the park, making this one of the best spots to go bird watching in all of Pennsylvania.

While many birds summer at Presque Isle, its location along the Atlantic Flyway makes it an especially great spot to visit in the spring or fall when birds are migrating through the park.

Hiking Trails

While most visitors to the park head straight to the water, there are 11 miles of hiking trails in Presque Isle State Park that can be explored.

Given the park’s relatively flat geography, these trails aren’t overly difficult but do offer access to some of the quieter areas of Presque Isle. If you are looking for wildlife or simply want to enjoy some of the park’s unique landscapes, make sure to pack your hiking boots with your swimsuit.

It is worth noting, however, that Presque Isle’s trails can be marshy or entirely underwater when the lake is high, so make sure to check which trails are open before heading out.

The Amazing Sunsets

If there is one thing Presque Isle is known for beyond its great beaches and boating, it’s the amazing sunsets you can see from the park.

From nearly all the beaches, there is an unobstructed view to the west, and many people visit the park in the evenings simply to enjoy watching the sunset over the lake.

While there really isn’t a bad spot from which to watch the sunset, Sunset Point between beaches #9 and #10 is especially popular.

After a fun day exploring the best things to do in Presque Isle State Park, take a few minutes to enjoy a fantastic sunset.

Commodore Perry Monument

The Commodore Perry Monument is located along Misery Bay and commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. While the battle actually occurred off the shores of Put-in-Bay, Ohio, the fleet was based in Presque Isle Bay.

Signage around the monument tells the story of the fleet and its commander, Commodore Oliver Hazzard Perry. While the information here isn’t as complete as what you can find at the Erie Maritime Museum , it offers a great overview and allows you to learn about the history in the spot where it happened.

Pontoon Boat Tours

One hidden secret of the park is that there are free boat tours of Presque Isle. Run by park volunteers, the Pontoon Boat Tours leave from a dock adjacent to the kayak rentals near Misery Bay.

Offered four times daily from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day (plus a fifth evening tour on Wednesdays and Fridays), these 50-minute tours take up to 16 guests onto Misery Bay and the ponds in the interior of Presque Isle.

There is no pre-registration for these tours and sign-ups start 30 minutes prior to the tour time, so make sure to arrive early as they fill up quickly.

Fishing at Presque Isle State Park is incredibly popular. Throughout the day, many people can be spotted in the prime spots trying to catch some of the many fish that inhabit the waters here. Common species include bass, walleye, perch, and steelhead.

You can also go ice fishing during the winter once the ice is thick enough.

Note that a Lake Erie fishing stamp is required in addition to a standard PA fishing license.

North Pier Light

The North Pier Light is located, believe it or not, on North Pier. This is along the narrow channel that leads from Presque Isle Bay out to Lake Erie.

In addition to being a very popular fishing location, you can walk out onto the concrete pier for a close look at this navigational beacon.

While you can only see it from the outside, this is an incredibly scenic spot in the park and is also a great spot to watch boats sailing in and out of the harbor.

Thanks to the flat terrain, there are few better ways to explore Presque Isle than by bicycle. In fact, there are 13.5 miles of bicycling trails throughout the park.

Known as the Karl Boyes Multi-purpose National Recreation Trail, the biking trail at Presque Isle completely encircles that park. The trail follows the main roads through the park but is mostly separated from the road, which makes it safe for the whole family.

For those without a bicycle, Yellow Bike Rentals near the Waterworks Pumphouse rents bikes, tricycles, and even four-wheeled surreys.

Tom Ridge Environmental Education Center

Located adjacent to the entrance to Presque Isle State Park is the Tom Ridge Environmental Education Center . Not only does this serve as the park office, but it also features a fantastic museum, observation tower, and movie theater.

The museum and observation tower are free and offer a chance to learn more about the history and geology of Presque Isle. The museum is incredibly well done and offers information and activities for both kids and adults.

The movie theater is nearly as large as an IMAX screen and shows a variety of educational programs throughout the day for a small fee.

If you happen to be in Erie on a rainy day, this is one of the best things to at Presque Isle State Park when the weather isn’t cooperating.

Winter Activities

While Presque Isle State Park is most popular during the summer, it’s also a fun place to visit during the winter.

During this time of year, the park and lake are typically covered by ice and snow, creating many unique ways to explore the area.

Popular wintertime activities at Presque Isle include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice skating. There is also a great holiday season light display, known as Presque Isle Lights that you can check out in December.

Where to Stay Near Presque Isle State Park

With so many things to do at Presque Isle State Park, you might be wondering where to stay overnight.

Unfortunately, there is no campground at Presque Isle State Park, but there are many places to stay in Erie just minutes away from the park.

I’ve personally stayed at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront and the Cobblestone Inn and Suites , both of which offer great views of Presque Isle State Park from some rooms and are a short drive from the park.

If you want to be as close to the park as possible, Red Carpet Inn and Comfort Inn are both just a few blocks from the entrance and have good reviews.

If you are looking for somewhere to camp at Presque Isle, Sarah’s Campground is located adjacent to the park and offers camping sites (including some on the beach) and RV spots. Sarah’s also features a very popular spot to eat near Presque Isle.

I’m 65 and have been visiting Presque Isle and Erie since I was three. It was my family’s “go to” place for our vacations. As an adult, I shared the Erie experience with my friends and children, going to Waldemeer Park, playing miniature golf nearby, riding bicycles the whole circuit of the park and enjoying the experience of staying in a vintage “tourist home” or a small bungalow along the main street into the park (They’re no longer there, unfortunately); when too much time has passed since my last visit, I ache to return. As an aging adult, I especially like the photo ops in the area: lighthouses, tree-lined pathways, foliage, beaches, kite competitions, sunrises and sunsets, wind-swept and sandy areas for picnics. There are great fishing spots, boat rides to take, and plenty of peaceful, open areas waiting to be explored. I am especially fond of going in the “off” season when moody, gray skies and windy weather kick up the whitecaps on the lake…breathtaking!

how close is the Erie Canal?

It’s probably a couple of hours to the Canal. The closest point would be somewhere near Buffalo.

Coming to Erie to visit friends and family and want to have a picnic is there any picnic tables on the beach side to go early and reserve for fun

I’m sure there are some with views of the water, but I can’t think of where specifically. There are a good number on the bay side, though.

You can reserve a shelter which has several picnic tables under it. But there are many picnic tables throughout the park and on the beaches. If you are there on a weekend go early to get a picnic table in a location you like.

In my experience it’s pretty much first come first served (Beach #1, 3, 6, 7). Keep in mind the beach can be really pretty windy. Most picnic tables are in the area with trees between the parking lots and sand. Some have grills, and some are closer to bathrooms than others. I would try the day in advance if that is remotely possible to find your target top 3 tables, then locate someone or a small group (1 adult, as many teens as want too) there at the beach opening time. Solar eclipse 2024: Your guide to watching the total solar eclipse in Erie

If you want to see the solar eclipse on April 8 in its totality, you won’t have to travel far.

Two hours north of Pittsburgh, Erie is the only major city in Pennsylvania in the eclipse’s path of totality, VisitErie said. The next total solar eclipse won’t happen again in the contiguous United States until 2044, and the next time Erie will be in the path of totality will be 2144.

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning on traveling north to not see the sun:

Times of totality

NASA said the path of totality is narrow , but it actually spans several miles through several counties in Pennsylvania.

The top of the path covers a small portion of Ontario, Canada and almost the entirety of Lake Erie, with the center point being in the middle of the water. From Erie, it stretches around 58 miles south into Mercer County.

“I understand Pittsburgh is going to be 97% totality, which is great, but 100% is mind blowing,” Christine Temple from VisitErie told Channel 11. “This is our time to shine, we want to put our best foot forward, and to show people that come up, look at all there is to see and do.”

While times of totality are different depending on where you are, the City of Erie said the moon is expected to start blocking the sun at 2:02 p.m. The sky will return to normal by around 4:30 p.m.

VisitErie has compiled a list of what times local communities will be blacked out:

When the sun is blocked, the temperature will drop about 10 degrees, VisitErie said. The sun will be toward the west, not Presque Isle Bay in downtown Erie.

Heavy traffic expected

The City of Erie is preparing for heavy traffic for the eclipse, especially in downtown and on state routes and interstates.

More than 200,000 people are expected to travel to Erie County to watch the dramatic solar event. That’s over twice the city’s population of around 94,000.

Traffic will be so intense that the city is advising residents to make sure they have adequate groceries or prescriptions so they don’t have to fight traffic to get to the store. Several businesses and schools are also closing for the day.

“We know that gridlock and traffic jams will be a major concern, so please, be prepared and plan ahead. Other cities that have been in a total solar eclipse have said it took 12 hours for their highways and interstates to clear from major traffic after the eclipse. We are encouraging visitors to arrive early and, most importantly, stay in Erie later, rather than hit the road immediately after the eclipse,” the city said.

Presque Isle State Park is also expected to be packed, with the 13 beaches being the closest you can get to the center of the path of totality. However, going to the beach to watch the eclipse will require patience.

“Presque Isle, we know is going to get a lot of visitors regardless, but there is only one road in and one road out”, says Temple. “So if you’re dead set on going to Presque Isle, make plans that you’re going to be sitting quite a while in traffic.”

The city said PennDOT will be putting up message boards on highways that lead to Erie before and during the eclipse. They will include safety messages such as ‘remember to use your headlights during the Eclipse’ and ‘do not stop on shoulders or in the middle of the road to watch the Eclipse’.

Lower State Street north of the Bayfront Parkway downtown will be closed to traffic. This will allow visitors to walk down to the waterfront and watch the eclipse. Sheraton Bayfront Hotel and Hampton Inn Bayfront guests driving vehicles to their accommodations will be directed to their respective destinations by Erie police officers.

To ensure emergency vehicles have safe routes, the following no parking areas will be posted:

• West 2nd Street from State Street to Cascade Street will be posted ‘no parking’ along the north side of the road. This corresponds with the normal no parking Mondays.
• Route 20 (East and West 26th Street) will be posted ‘no parking’ either side of the street from Elm Street to Elmwood. This will provide space for drivers to pull over upon the approach of any emergency vehicles.
• Lincoln Ave from the Bayfront Parkway north to 8th Street will be posted ‘no parking’.
• Greengarden Boulevard from West 12th Street to West 8th Street will be posted ‘no parking’.

For those who prefer public transportation, the Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority will be running all bus routes as normal on April 8 but will adjust if necessary due to traffic congestion.

EMTA will be offering a complimentary shuttle that will service the Intermodal Transportation Center at 208 E, Bayfront Parkway, travel across East Front Street, turning south on State Street, travel along east Perry Square, service the bus shelters at 7th & French and 10th & Holland and back to the Intermodal Center. The shuttle will begin at 9 a.m. April 8 and continue until traffic clears.

Community events

Erie and its surrounding areas are filled with festivities celebrating the total eclipse, with the heart of downtown Erie having the most and being closest to the center of the path of totality besides the beaches. Hotels around 10x normal price

Last month, Channel 11 told you about hotel prices on the rise in Erie for the day of the eclipse. At the time, hotels were already at 85% occupancy, with prices sometimes being 10 times more than the normal price the week before.

As of just under two weeks before the solar event, hotel prices have jumped.

The Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel right on Presque Isle Bay downtown will run you over $1,000 on April 8. Closer to the beaches, the Cobblestone Hotel & Suites runs at around $600 for the day. In the opposite direction in North East, lodging can be up to nearly $800.

If you’re looking to get away from downtown Erie, La Quinta Inn & Suites right off of I-90 in Summit Township is also around $600. Nearby Baymont by Wyndham, which is directly across the street from Presque Isle Downs & Casino, is listed at around the same price.

Peach Street, which spans Summit and Millcreek townships, is a go-to for food and hotels. Prices for lodging range on the busy roadway from around $450 to nearly $1,000 on the day of the eclipse.

Further away from the center of the path of totality are cheaper options. Comfort Suites in Edinboro is listed at under $300 for the day.

If you’re looking for a sweeter deal, local motels may be the way to go, if they still have availability. Riviera Motel Erie is listed at under $100 for the day, and it’s not located far from Presque Isle State Park.

How to safely watch the eclipse

While some watch parties in Erie are giving away eyewear to watch the eclipse (and at least one gas station chain is giving away a free pair with any purchase), you may have to find a way to safely watch the solar event yourself.

Erie is in the path of totality with this eclipse, meaning that those watching can view the event without protective eyewear during the totality part - when the moon fully covers the sun, and the surrounding area goes dark. However, this window of opportunity only lasts a few minutes before the sun peaks back through and viewers need protection.

According to the American Astronomical Society (AAS), there is only one safe way to directly look at the sun during a solar eclipse while it’s not totally covered by the moon: through solar eclipse glasses or handheld viewers.

NASA says the filters on the solar eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker and are supposed to comply with an international safety standard. If you don’t wear them, you’re risking serious damage to your eyes.

Solar viewers are a hot commodity both online and in retail stores across the U.S. — but that doesn’t mean they’re actually safe to use. These special glasses should comply with ISO 12312-2, an international safety standard for filters that allow for the direct viewing of the sun.

AAS encourages people to avoid searching for eclipse glasses on online retailers like Amazon and Temu.

Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024.   

The City of Erie, PA is the only major city in Pennsylvania that is directly in the path of totality for the total solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. This is very exciting for our city and for the tens of thousands of visitors that are expected to join us. Since Erie is in the path of totality, we expect to have anywhere from 56,000 to 200,000 visitors. While we wholeheartedly welcome visitors to our amazing city, we want everyone to be aware of what to do to make the day as enjoyable and safe as possible. 

Be Prepared  

We know that gridlock and traffic jams will be a major concern, so please, be prepared and plan ahead. Other cities that have been in a total solar eclipse have said it took 12 hours for their highways and interstates to clear from major traffic after the eclipse. We are encouraging visitors to arrive early and, most importantly, stay in Erie later, rather than hit the road immediately after the eclipse.  

Hotels  

We know that the area’s hotel occupancy for that weekend is already at 97%.  

Plan on Heavy Traffic  

Local residents should consider limiting unnecessary travel in downtown Erie and on the State Routes and Interstates on April 8 th .  For real-time traffic information visit the www.511pa.com website or download the mobile app. This will help you understand where you can travel safely and what traffic areas you should avoid. 

PennDOT will also be putting up message boards on highways that lead to Erie in advance and during the eclipse. These message boards will inform motorists of the eclipse date and warn about possible heavy traffic. They will also include safety messages such as ‘remember to use your headlights during the Eclipse’ and ‘do not stop on shoulders or in the middle of the road to watch the Eclipse’. 

On April 8, 2024:

Lower State Street north of the Bayfront Parkway will be closed to traffic (like it is during the Tall Ships festival). This will allow visitors to walk down to the waterfront and watch the eclipse. Sheraton Bayfront Hotel and Hampton Inn Bayfront guests driving vehicles to their accommodations will be directed to their respective destinations by Erie Police officers.

To ensure emergency vehicles have safe routes, the following no parking areas will be posted:

West 2 nd Street from State Street to Cascade Street will be posted ‘no parking’ along the north side of the road.  This corresponds with the normal no parking Mondays.

Route 20 (East and West 26 th Street) will be posted ‘no parking’ either side of the street from Elm Street to Elmwood.  This will provide space for drivers to pull over upon the approach of any emergency vehicles. 

Lincoln Ave from the Bayfront Parkway north to 8 th Street will be posted ‘no parking’.

Greengarden Blvd . from West 12 th Street to West 8th Street will be posted ‘no parking’.  

Bus Transportation  

The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority will be running all bus routes as normal on April 8 but will adjust if necessary due to traffic congestion. Riders can use the MyStop mobile app for real-time bus information and trip planning. https://emta.availtec.com/InfoPoint/

The LIFT will be providing medical only trips and ADA rides on April 8th and we encourage riders to consider scheduling non-essential rides for another day.

EMTA will be offering a complimentary shuttle that will service the Intermodal Transportation Center at 208 E, Bayfront Parkway, travel across East Front Street, turning south on State Street, travel along east Perry Square, service the bus shelters at 7th & French and 10th & Holland and back to the Intermodal Center. The shuttle will begin at 9AM April 8 and continue until traffic clears.

EMTA and Paratransit LIFT services will return to normal on Tuesday, April 9th.

City Hall  

On Monday, April 8, City Hall will be closed to the public to reduce traffic downtown so that many employees can work remotely to reduce traffic congestion. However, City of Erie personnel, who are essential to assisting with the eclipse, will be working on-site.  In fact, every available City of Erie police Officer will be working during the Eclipse.  

City of Erie Police and Fire Departments will open an Emergency Operations Center on April 8 to coordinate any problems, or fire and traffic safety issues, and maintain communication with Erie County.  

Public Works will help coordinate street closures, placement of portable toilets and trash cans, and clean-up of parks and public spaces after the eclipse.   

Schools  

Erie’s Public Schools are closed on April 8 th because the Eclipse will start around the time school gets out. 

Watching the Eclipse  

At 2:02 PM April 8, the moon will start to block the sun. The Total Eclipse lasts from 3:16 PM to 3:20 PM. During those 4 minutes, Erie will be totally dark and the temperature will drop about 10 degrees. The sky returns to normal at about 4:30 PM.  

Please consider where the sun will be at 3:16 PM to decide good viewing locations.  The sun will be toward the West, not over Presque Isle Bay.  You may find that the best spot to view the eclipse is from your yard or somewhere within walking distance of your home. Remember, to not injure your eyes, you cannot look directly at the sun during the eclipse without special ISO protective glasses or shields.  

Except for a specific and brief period during a total solar eclipse, you must never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, such as safe solar viewing glasses (eclipse glasses). Eclipse glasses are NOT the same as regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun. During a total solar eclipse, you must wear your eclipse glasses (or use other solar filters) to view the Sun directly during the partial eclipse phase. You can only take your glasses off during the short time when the Moon completely obscures the Sun – known as the period of totality. If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can use an  indirect viewing method , such as a pinhole projector, which projects an image of the Sun onto a nearby surface. 

Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.

Be Prepared and Plan Ahead  

Residents should also ensure they have adequate groceries or prescriptions, so they don’t have to fight traffic to get to a store on the Eclipse day.  If you have an appointment on April 8 th , it is best to reschedule it.  

Please ensure that your caregivers can arrive or depart safely.  

Make sure you know where your children are at the time of the eclipse and are equipped to view the eclipse safely.

Businesses  

Businesses should consider their staffing plans for the day of the eclipse and contact vendors in advance to ensure any deliveries of supplies are not interrupted by the expected traffic.  Because it will be totally dark during the eclipse, also consider if you have any outdoor lights that are on timers and adjust them to give you light at least from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. Local libraries and convenience stores are offering free safety glasses for Monday's total solar eclipse .

Erie County Public Library is giving away free eclipse glasses at Blasco Library in Erie and at branch libraries in Millcreek, Fairview, Lawrence Park and Edinboro.

Erie County reminds residents to prepare for the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024

Arrive early, stay put, and leave late to avoid traffic congestion.

On April 8, 2024, residents of Erie County will experience a total solar eclipse. The last total solar eclipse in New York State was nearly 100 years ago. With such an exciting and rare event, Erie County wants to ensure community members are safe and prepared for the eclipse .

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. Since eclipses are rare phenomena, Erie County expects a large influx of tourists and visitors, with the projected number of visitors nearing one million people.

Eclipse tourism will increase the chance of congestion and traffic and h eavy traffic may cause travel delays and detours. For the safety of everyone in Erie County, residents need to plan ahead. Residents should celebrate the eclipse from their own homes. As long as the skies are clear, visibility should be good from most locations. If residents choose to travel, it is crucial to arrive early to events, stay put for the eclipse, and leave late to avoid causing significant congestion.

Erie County encourages residents to prepare in advance for the eclipse through the following considerations:

• Plan travel ahead of time.  Try to arrive early to viewing locations, utilizing public transit or carpooling if possible. Stay put for the duration of the eclipse, and plan on leaving late from viewing events.
• Stay informed on traffic patterns.  Increased congestion and potential accidents mean traffic may change frequently. Visit 511wny.org to stay updated.
• Create a communication plan. Increased cell phone usage in the area can burden cell networks. Text when possible and create backup plans for communicating with family members.
• Pack accordingly. Erie County's weather can be unpredictable in early April, so residents should consider preparing for wet, cold, or hot conditions. To make an eclipse experience more enjoyable, consider bringing camping chairs, jackets, water, snacks, and first aid supplies.
• Prevent medication emergencies.  Check your medication stock regularly and call your pharmacy if running low. Keep your medication with you if traffic delays get you stuck somewhere longer than anticipated. 

“We want to make sure that everyone enjoys the eclipse, and eye safety is essential for making that happen,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein . “Eclipse safety glasses are necessary during the partial phases of the eclipse. Looking directly at the sun without these glasses can damage your eyes and cause permanent retinal burns. Symptoms of retinal burns include a loss of central vision or distorted vision, and anyone experiencing symptoms should seek professional treatment.” 

Erie County urges residents to get eclipse glasses in advance of April 8. Solar eclipse glasses must have an ISO 12312-2 safety standard. It is essential to ensure that eclipse glasses are not scratched or damaged. Sunglasses are not an acceptable substitute for solar eclipse glasses. Camera lenses, binoculars, and telescopes are only safe for looking at the sun if equipped with special-purpose solar filters, even if wearing eclipse glasses. 

Eclipse viewers must wear solar eclipse glasses during the eclipse's partial phases. For Erie County, the partial eclipse begins at 2:04 pm. Totality, from 3:18 pm to 3:22 pm, is the only time eclipse glasses do not need to be worn. From 3:22 pm onwards, eclipse viewers must wear eclipse glasses again. Parents must supervise children to ensure that eclipse glasses are correctly worn.

Impaired and Distracted Driving

Make sure everyone gets home safely from eclipse activities. Drivers who are impaired by alcohol, cannabis, illicit drugs or some prescription or over-the-counter medicines can cause vehicle accidents that lead to traumatic injury, property damage and death. Distracted drivers who are texting, checking map directions or making phone calls while driving can also cause devastating accidents. If you are planning to drive on April 8, drive cautiously and courteously; know your route to and from your destination; plan for delays and potential detours. If are planning to use an impairing drug or substance, plan ahead for a responsible driver. Do not let friends drive if they are under the influence of an impairing drug. Don’t make or answer calls or texts while driving; if you need to talk or text, pull over to a parking lot or other safe space off the roadway. And, always wear your seatbelt. 

2-1-1, 3-1-1, 5-1-1 and 9-1-1

2-1-1 WNY is available 24/7 for free referrals to health and human services and other basic needs. 3-1-1 is a service for city of Buffalo residents to get information about city services and share complaints. 3-1-1 will be open on April 8. 5-1-1 NY (phone) and 511ny.org have current traffic conditions and delays statewide.

• Breathing difficulty /shortness of breath/breathing has stopped
• Choking  (cannot talk or breathe)
• Constant chest pain - in adults (lasting longer than two minutes)
• Uncontrolled bleeding or large blood loss
• Gunshot wounds, stabbings
• Vomiting blood
• Sudden fainting/loss of consciousness
• Severe allergic reaction  (difficulty breathing or unresponsive)
• Broken bones
• Severe injuries  from: traffic accidents; head injury; significant falls; physical entrapment

Erie County: Total Solar Eclipse Resources

Monday's eclipse path could be slightly off. Is your viewing spot in Erie affected?

The path of Monday’s total solar eclipse could be slightly different than expected and leave several parts of the country with a much narrower window of totality, according to new calculations.

But those in Erie don't have to worry much.

Since the change in path amounts to only a few hundred yards to about a mile, Erie County ― which continues to sit in the middle of the path of totality ― will remain a prime viewing spot for the event.

The new calculations, which were first reported by Forbes , come from John Irwin, a member of a team of amateur astronomers analyzing the eclipse for the blogsite Besselian Elements , according to a report from USA Today .

According to the group's website , Irwin was able to create a more accurate eclipse map by factoring in the exact topography of both the moon and the Earth and re-calculating the size of the sun, which might be slightly larger than what scientists thought, according to a report in the Indianapolis Star.

The new calculations slightly changed the 115-mile-wide eclipse path from NASA's projections, leaving hundreds of towns and cities on the edge of that path with a potentially shorter window to experience totality.

Forbes identified 15 areas whose place on the path may have been altered in some form, to include the Finger Lakes region of New York state.

Despite the news media attention given to Irwin's calculations, his research is not peer-reviewed and NASA has not altered its predictions, according to the USA Today report.

Erie Events
