Bruges (Brugge) to Paris, Bike & Barge in Belgium and France
The food was fantastic. Our Captain did a wonderful job. The first mate was ready to help in every way. The guide was good but since he had not led this route previously had to hunt for the best route for us. This sometimes meant poor dirt paths. The barge was not as nice as some I have been on.
Bike and Barge: Amsterdam to Bruges Plus! Belgium's Breweries
The boat and crew were fantastic. Accommodations on board were very nice. Bike routes kept the cyclist off the main roads and scenery was very nice. Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. I would recommend this tour for those folks who like flat easy riding and not having to pack and repack each day.

Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge - Comfort
I took the Bike and Barge trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. There was so much good about this trip - our guide, Simon, was excellent on all fronts. However, there were 24 cyclists and Simon had no assistant. That is totally unacceptable. It was only by luck that we had some very experienced cyclists on this tour who assisted Simon when needed: and there were numerous occasions.
Bike and Barge: Amsterdam to Bruges
It was as advertised, an energetic but relatively simple trip to some great locations. We’d go again in a heartbeat!
Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon
Very good crew who went out of their way to keep us happy and lovely travel companions. Great sights on the bikes and the bikes themselves very good. The boat is very comfortable and the rooms very small ( which we were forewarned). Our guide made sure there were many options both day and night to see extra. I was disappointed she lost people on 2 days, particularly as someone was hurt on one of those days. The food was very good with variety each night. I think everyone was pleased with the trip

Our ship, your hotel
Imagine a floating hotel sailing to the next stage, while you are calmly pedaling along. No lugging of luggage: that is exactly what Bike & Barge holidays are all about! In the pleasant atmosphere on board you can have a chat, go through the day with your fellow passengers and enjoy the meals prepared specially for cyclists. In the evenings you can enjoy a drink in the salon or admire the setting sun on deck.
Do not expect a cruise ship with its passive luxury. The Bike & Barge Holidays are for people who really enjoy the physical activity of cycling and who value sociability more than wholesale luxury. Free WiFi is (limited) available in lounge and on deck.

You and the group, new friends from around the world.
One of the most attractive aspects of the Bike & Barge holidays is that you encounter an international company on board. It’s a great opportunity for you to get to know various cultures at the same time! We have people of all ages, solo travelers, couples and also families with children (during the school holidays). Most groups are made up of 12 to 26 people.
What are the cabins like?
Most cabins are 2-person cabins (double or twin beds), but some barges also have single use or triple cabins. All cabins have a porthole or window and are provided with running water (hot and cold), private shower/toilet, 220 voltage and central heating. Some barges have airconditioning and different decks. There is limited storage space in the cabin. We recommend 1 suitcase per person. You can slide the suitcase under the bed. On the tour page you find more detailed information regarding the ship(s) scheduled on the tour.
The most beautiful cycling routes
Our carefully selected routes will lead you along the most beautiful spots of Europe. The average daily distance is around 45 kilometers. Most participants prefer riding in a group with the cycling guide, but you can also ride individually. A road book is included (1x per cabin) and GPS-tracks are available.
The team, hospitality comes first
The captain/skipper, the chef and on the guided tours also your tour guide, all welcome you warmly. They are prepared specifically for these trips and will provide good and safe passage, good meals, and a friendly, pleasant atmosphere. They will, of course, also give you a great deal of interesting information during and after the cycling and sailing. The captain/skipper is responsible for the smooth running of things on board; the cook is in charge of the catering. On the guided tours a tour leader accompanies you during the bike ride and can assist in case of breakdowns. He/She will be your guide to point out the things of interest along the way. He/She is multi-lingual and speaks at least English.
The menu varies per barge but your chef is used to cook delicious meals for hungry cyclists. Besides an extensive breakfast, you will also be offered a packed lunch for on the road. It consists of different types of bread and sandwich fillings, juice, a snack and a piece of fruit. Lunch package needs to be prepared by yourself after breakfast. Dinner is different every day. There is a first course, main course and dessert The meals on board are included in the price, as are coffee and tea. Soft drinks and alcoholic drinks can be obtained at a reasonable charge. When you return on board after the day’s cycling, a cup of tea or coffee with a biscuit will be waiting for you. If you suffer from food allergies or food intolerance (such as lactose- or gluten- intolerance/-allergy) or if you have special meal requirements (vegetarian; pescetarian; vegan meals; gluten free meals etc.), we ask you to mention this when booking, but at the latest until 14 days before arrival. Diets which need a special preparation or special ingredients can only be offered in limited form. We will do our best to meet your needs, but we also ask for your understanding as due to limited logistic possibilities on a barge we are not able to prepare complete specialized menus and special food requirements cannot always be met in all details. On certain tours, in case of Celiac; gluten-free, lactose-free or vegan diet there is an additional charge. This charge is € 75,- per diet/ per person/per week when you order the diet when booking and € 100,- per diet/ per person/per week when ordering on spot.

Things to know.
Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists in Turkey , and Croatia , and for minors in several other European countries. While not obligatory elsewhere, we recommend bringing your own for safety. Helmets are available for rent on our tours.
You’re welcome to bring your own bicycle on most tours. Please confirm space availability on your chosen vessel in advance. Note that we are not liable for any loss or damage to personal bicycles. If you don’t have your bicycle, you can rent it on our tours.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended to enjoy the tours, which typically involve 40-60 kilometers of cycling daily, averaging around 5 hours of riding.
Our tours are designed to immerse you in the experience, hence a support vehicle is not part of the journey. Participants are encouraged to complete the daily cycling stages with their fellow cyclists.
To ensure the integrity of our rental bikes and your safety, we do not allow personal pedals to be attached to them.
While our routes are planned for full-day adventures, certain tours may offer the flexibility to return to the ship earlier, subject to the ship’s docking capabilities.
The adventure each day can span from 30 to 60 kilometers, with the time spent cycling influenced by your pace and the number of stops to soak in the scenery.
Our guides converse fluently in Dutch, English, and German, with some also proficient in French or Italian. Briefings are conducted in English and sometimes in German.
The number of companions on your journey will vary, with smaller ships often at full capacity and larger vessels typically filled to 80-90%.
Accommodations range from cozy standard cabins to luxurious superior suites, with each ship offering its unique array of options.
Stay connected with Wi-Fi available across all our vessels, with specifics outlined in our Travel Preparation guide.
To maintain the serene ambiance of our ships, laundry services are not offered on board.
Some ships equip cabins with hairdryers, while others can provide them upon request.
Our ships maintain a smoke-free environment in cabins and indoor public areas, with designated smoking zones available on deck on most vessels.
To ensure the comfort of all our guests, pets are not permitted on board, with the exception of crew members’ dogs that are familiar with life at sea.
Seasickness is uncommon due to the stability of our vessels and the typically calm waters on our routes.
Parking solutions are tailored to each departure point, with options like P+R facilities and valet services detailed in your pre-travel boarding information.
You will receive comprehensive travel details to your ship’s location upon booking, including information on parking and available transfer services.
Our guests are generally between the ages of 45 and 65, bringing a wealth of life experiences to share.
Our tours attract a global audience, from the far reaches of Scandinavia to the southern tips of Africa, and from the Americas to Asia.
Packing light is key, as cabin space is optimized for comfort and not for large luggage.
Our tour leaders are equipped to assist with minor issues, and in case of emergencies, the local emergency number 112 should be contacted.
For your safety, helmets are available for rent on most tours, and are included with our Premium tour packages.
You are welcome to enjoy the amenities on board instead of cycling. Please inform the tour leader or crew of your plans.
Our tours proceed rain or shine, with your safety as our top priority. You have the freedom to cycle or remain on board, based on your comfort with the weather conditions.
Weather conditions can vary from country to country and from season to season, so we suggest preparing for everything from rain to bright sunshine. For a detailed forecast, AccuWeather is a reliable source.
Not always. We suggest you bring your own equipment if you plan to snorkel.
Life-saving boats and life jackets are available on all ships and can be found in marked wardrobes on the deck, in the salon, or under the beds in cabins. In case you cannot swim, it is important to inform the crew and the captain. While on the ship, it is essential to pay attention to the following safety measures:
The stairs on the vessels can be steep and narrow, so it’s important to be careful while going up or down. The decks can also be very slippery, especially in wet conditions, so passengers should use caution and hold onto the railings when walking around the vessel.
Climbing the foremast, jumping off the deck during the cruise, or going too far from the vessel during swim pauses are strictly prohibited.
In the busy high season, harbors can become congested, and vessels may have to dock beside each other, so it is essential to exercise caution when moving between them. Crew members are available to assist passengers who require help. However, the cruise is not recommended for those with limited mobility or in wheelchairs.
The length of the cycling routes planned for each day is an estimate and takes into account local conditions and possible detours or shortcuts. The sailing and cycling routes may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the cyclists on board. Typically, departures are in the morning, usually after breakfast.
Bringing and consuming your own beverages on the vessel is prohibited. Instead, you can order drinks from the vessel’s salon, which serves as a restaurant, living room, and bar. The bar offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. If you would like a drink that is unavailable at the time, please inform the crew, and they will do their best to arrange it for you at the next port of call.

Europe 25 - Early Bird Savings
If you are planning ahead, why not take a look at our brand new 2025 departures across our range of European escapes? Book early and you could enjoy savings of up to £300 per couple on a wide range of holidays. With a limited number of discounted places available, make sure you don't miss out. Terms and conditions apply .
Scenic beauty, a fascinating artistic heritage and an epic history, all of this and more makes Europe a dream destination for curious travellers wanting a Europe guided tour. Lovely landscapes offer a diverse feast for the eyes, whether you head south to Spain and Italy , or east to Croatia and Romania or explore some of it's most beautiful islands such as Sicily, Sardinia or Malta . Alternatively, stay closer to home as you explore the French Riviera .
There are so many options and variety on our European tours. Discover the rich historical sites of Turkey - such as the legendary city of Troy or head to warmer climes to find beaches in all shapes and sizes, from dramatic and rugged to golden and idyllic. Then there’s Italy’s Tuscan hills , which are dotted with Cypress trees, while pastel-shaded houses cling precariously to the glorious coastline of Amalfi . And if you want to reach really dizzy heights, a holiday to the Swiss Alps offers jaw-dropping views in every direction. There’s a long list of man-made wonders to consider when choosing your European tour, too. Italy is crammed with treasures from top to toe, with Rome’s Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Florence’s Duomo for starters. The romance of France , and the magnificent Spain’s Alhambra Palace will leave you utterly spellbound. And you’ll wonder how on earth Greece’s Meteora Monasteries were built on towering rocks in the 11th century. The chance to step back in time is never too far away wherever your travels take you, with well-preserved historic treasures around every corner. Delve into the seemingly endless alleyways in Malta , where the Knights of St John would have roamed in the 14th century. Or stroll through Italy’s myriad medieval villages, which stand to this day untouched by time. Ponder life back in 79AD when the well-to-do city of Pompeii was smothered in hot ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. And you can walk in gladiators’ footsteps in Roman amphitheatres scattered right across the land. Sightseeing aside, a wonderful way to experience your chosen European holiday hot spot is through its cuisine. A cheese fondue, Kalamata olives, nutty olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, fish freshly plucked from the sea, earthy truffles – each country, and each region boasts its own specialities. And nothing quite beats breaking bread with the locals, or drinking a glass of wine in the very vineyard where the grapes were grown.
Destinations in Europe
Sitting astride two continents, a position that has given rise to a culture that reflects both East and West, our holiday packages to Turkey show a country where European aspirations mix comfortably with Asian traditions. With a heritage stretching farther back than the Byzantine Empire and even the Trojan War, the country we now know as Turkey has seen some of the most important events in all of human history.
With a beguiling blend of nature and history, you're guaranteed an unforgettable adventure in Bulgaria. The keen explorer simply cannot resist being helplessly drawn to the freshening sea breeze and miles of turquoise water characteristic of Bulgaria’s coast, and many cities feel the benefits of this refreshing ambiance.
An escorted tour to Croatia offers the opportunity to discover a country that has, in recent times, become one of the most popular destinations in Europe thanks to a rewarding mix of sublime scenery and towns and cities that are positively brimming with history.
From winter magic to irresistible summers; wild beauty to contemporary culture, you can expect vitality and excitement whenever during the year you visit Finland. Known as Suomi to the locals, Finland’s scenic landscapes are nothing short of extraordinary; whether you fancy photographing your way around fabulous parks or taking in beautiful coastline dotted with islands, we're sure you'll be able to indulge your nature-loving side.
France is a fantastic place for a holiday. Everywhere you go, there’s something new and exciting to experience. Here no two regions are the same, and whether you prefer captivating countryside chateaus or stylish seaside resorts, you're all but guaranteed a good time. Plus, there’s the added benefit of not having too long a journey; at its shortest, France lies just 20 miles off the coast of Kent and is easily accessible using all major transport methods.
Widely regarded as the birthplace of Western civilisation, Greece is an enticing destination for culture vultures and history buffs (though if you're happier taking in beautiful landscapes and exploring new places, you won’t miss out!). An array of archaeological gems offers much insight into this country’s vast and ancient heritage.
If you’re looking for a holiday packed with adventure, Italy is where you should go. A land of warmth and beauty, Italy is the place for fine art, fine food and fine living – a toast to the heritage of Europe’s favourite (and only!) boot-shaped country! Escorted tours of Italy with Travelsphere are an excellent way to make the most of this enchanting destination.
If you want to be enchanted on your holidays, Lithuania is the place to go. Tradition and folklore are deeply ingrained into Lithuanian culture; here, songs, stories and tales only serve to enhance the quietly eccentric vibe that abounds within this beautiful country.
The stuff of fairy tales, Austria is famously beautiful. Characterized by mountain villages, baroque architecture, Imperial history and rugged Alpine terrain, no other country waltzes so elegantly between the urban and the rural mode of life.
A country where medieval architecture meets the modernity of today’s world, Germany is where fairy-tales come to life. Here treats and temptations are abounding in the form of soul-stirring scenery, spirit-lifting culture and much more.
The crowning jewel of Central Europe, Hungary is a truly awe-inspiring place to visit; studded with a mixture of architectural landmarks and grand neoclassical buildings, this is the place to be when it comes to enjoying a unique, enriching travel experience. There’s a prominent Turkish and Roman influence in the country’s culture – evident in the popularity of mineral spas – which only serves to make holidaymakers fall in love with it even more.
Defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields, Iceland is one of the world's most spectacular places. If you're a nature lover, there's no better place on the planet to admire breathtaking views and dramatic backdrops.
United Kingdom
There's a reason why we call the UK our very own green and pleasant land; boasting a unique heritage and unrivalled history, it's the envy of many other nations. From pulsing cities to stunning countryside, you’ll find a wide range of things to see and do here. The shared culture and distinct local flavours that contribute to the UK really must be seen to be believed.
Absolutely amazing trip - Travelsphere took care of everything while we sailed round exquisite islands finding hidden gems or places of historical interest at every stop. Highly recommend Charlotte Field
Europe Touring Holidays Frequently Asked Questions
Europe has an array of exciting destinations from Italy to Turkey to Croatia and many more, here's some good tours for you to choose from.
Italy has so much to offer from the colosseum to Pompeii to Venice – all locations you definitely won’t want to miss! To cover all these you will need to take the Grand Tour of Italy . 15 days exploring the country from Venice to Catania, Rome, Sorrento and Sicily on route!
Turkey tantalises the senses on our Treasures of Turkey holiday . You’ll go from the hustle and bustle of the grand bazaar to watching the sunset with wine in hand at Love valley, enjoying archaeological sites, mosques and hot springs along the way.
If the medieval era is your thing then our Discover Romania and enchanting Transylvania tour will be right up your street. You’ll visit Sibiu, with its 14th century Lutheran Cathedral. Go to Sighisoara, the birthplace of one of Transylvania's most notorious sons, Vlad the Impaler – the real-life inspiration for Dracula and of course you’ll stop off at Bran’s Castle itself! (better known as Dracula’s Castle) and visit a 300-year-old monastery – still home to several monks in Bucharest.
If island hopping is more your dream holiday then our Croatian Island hopping tour may float your boat. Travelling from Split to Solta and back again, on our luxury ship solely for our group! You’ll enjoy kayaking around the walls of Dubrovnik, swimming in secluded coves, bobbing around in an inflatable, and discovering interesting facts like ancient methods of air-conditioning, all accompanied by laughter and cheerful chatter of your shipmates!
There is so much to see and enjoy across Europe from Germany’s architecture, to Frances artistic attractions and an array of historical sites in Italy.
Key attractions not to be missed on your tours are:
Italy – The Colosseum, built in AD 70-80 using travertine, limestone and volcanic rock, seating over 80,000 spectators, it was most famously known for its gladiator fights but it was also the arena for re-enactments of famous battles and executions. More remarkably, it was also the set for simulated sea battles! The arena would be filled with water so vessels could float in during the shows and drained rapidly afterwards. Equally as interesting is the engineering behind this theatre. It had a retractable awning to protect its spectators from the bad weather! Also hidden beneath the colosseum was a warren of tunnels and cells which held the gladiators and animals captive before they were sent to fight.
Another site not to miss in Italy is Pompeii – a 440,000 square meter town that was tragically engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Approximately 10 percent of the population died and the city was buried under lava and volcanic ash. The lava preserved the town which means you can walk the streets and see the well-preserved buildings such as the Lupanare (brothel), and thermopolium (the Roman equivalent of fast food).
France - The famous Eiffel Tower, at the centre of Champ de Mars in Paris, built to be the entrance to the World's Fair in1889.This world famous structure has not always been admired though, in fact Engineer Gustave Eiffel was greatly criticised by locals, calling it a monstrosity! Never did he or they imagine quite how successful and important a structure it would be today, with its 81 floors of exhibits, viewing decks, cafes and gift shops.
Venice – The floating city. A romantic location with over 118 islands connected by the canals that run through Venice. Grab a gondola and sit back, relax and take in the scenery.
Romania – Dracula’s Castle - Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic, horror novel Dracula may be imaginary, but the castle isn’t. It was the real life setting of the sinister novel and is located just outside of Brasov in Romania. Officially known as Bran Castle it includes all the weapons and armour that is mentioned in Bram’s book. As for the blood-sucker himself, Bram used Vlad the Impaler as his muse. A ruler who was notorious for brutal torture and demise of in excess of 10,000 people during his reign.
Turkey – Turkey has an array of wonders to offer from Mosques to palaces, to hot springs and the famous bazaars
There is so much delicious food to be tasted across Europe and such a variety from one country to another. From delightful seafood in Portugal , Greece and Croatia to perfect pasta dishes in Italy and world-famous desserts in Austria.
While in Romania you can try stuffed cabbage rolls and in Turkey , anyone with a sweet tooth must try the ancient, traditional pastry dessert of baklava.
There really is something for everyone.

Self Guided Bike & Barge
Destination
Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search, self guided bike & barge trips, cycle europe's bike trails by day then enjoy a river cruise by night.
Meander the scenic waterways of Europe at your own pace as majestic castles, rolling vineyards and pastoral farmlands unfold around you. Our relaxing self guided bike & barge trips allow you experience the European countryside on two wheels during the day and at the end of the day, return to the comfort of your barge as you cruise overnight to the next destination.
Bike & barge holidays are one of the most popular ways for individuals and families to experience the numerous hidden corners of Europe. Unlike inns, B&B’s and the small family run hotels that dot the European landscapes, you only need to unpack once on a barge based trip. Self guided bike & barge based cycling holidays are also extremely limited in capacity so you must plan your trip well in advance to ensure you don’t miss the boat!
Most barges offer twin cabins in a bunk style configuration (though some have side by side beds and triple/quad cabins suitable for families). Cabins are compact but comfortable. The cabins may have ensuite facilities and accommodate between 15 and 20 passengers plus crew depending on the boat. There is a communal dining area and meals are taken onboard. The barges travel along calm waterways, usually travelling no faster than 15km per hour.
