Know before you go...

What must i pack.

• The weather in Europe can be extremely varied according to the season you’re travelling and the country you’re visiting, so always check the weather forecast. 
• Your summer packing list should include lightweight clothing with items that can be layered, beachwear (if you're heading to the coast), a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes. 
• Winter in Europe is a cold (often snowy) affair, and you will need to pack the appropriate weatherproof items.  
• Be sure to pack comfortable clothing for the times you will spend in transit, whether you are travelling by plane or by coach. 
• For flights and public transport, be sure to have hand sanitiser handy. Don't forget a mini first aid kit and your regular prescription medication.
• Camera (or just use your phone) and charger. Some noise-cancelling earphones will come in handy too
• Bring along a European travel adaptor.  

Getting there & getting around  

• There are frequent flights from South Africa to all major  European destination s.  
• You can travel between European countries by plane, train or hiring a car .    
• As a whole, the public transport in most European cities is excellent and typically includes taxis, the underground, buses, trains and where relevant, ferries .  
• Smaller towns and villages in outlying areas throughout the continent may have less sophisticated transport infrastructure – it depends where you are going.  

Language & phrases  

• There are 24 official languages in Europe.
• English is the most commonly spoken language, followed by French, German and Spanish. 
• Learning a few phrases in the language of the country you're visiting will be warmly received by locals. 

What can I do to be a responsible traveller? 

• Water is scarce throughout some parts of Europe, most notably on the islands. Be mindful of your water usage – keep your showers short and re-use the towels in your hotel room.
• Wherever possible, promote community-based tourism by buying local food and souvenirs and supporting local artisans .  
• Be mindful of your waste, especially on the islands. Waste disposal is a costly affair for local businesses, so be sure to support their efforts by not bringing with you items that are heavily packaged or single-use plastic. Instead,  take fabric shopping bags with you and use refillable water bottles (when local drinking water is available).  
• Respect each other's cultures and customs and avoid imposing your beliefs.   

Safety tips

• Always have a map (or app) on hand, especially when travelling at night.  
• Be safety conscious: don’t display cash or valuables. Leave jewellery and expensive watches at home.  
• Keep your belongings safe – use the hotel safe for passports and valuables and watch out for pickpockets and bag snatchers when out and about.

Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

The Central Europe tour I was on with my daughter went beyond my expectations. I was nervous about having all that free time in new places but Eliza our amazing tour guide, gave us the best orientations and knowledge of all the places we visited. Sharing her local knowledge and her mastery of all the languages to help us fully experience and enjoy the countries we were in, made it perfect. The group size was good and she looked after us at every turn, especially on busy train stations and on arrival at new places. She helped us experience the local culture and food in each location, so we had highlights all through the tour. Highly recommend

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024

Far exceeded my expectations. To be clear, I hate traveling, I did it for 40 years and was loath to start again retired. But was I wrong, this was a great trip and vacation. I’ve been on ocean cruises but river cruising is so different. The boat is small, one meets many people, the food (except for one meal) was very good, wines good, excursions good, just well done, well organized, no problems, no mess, just enjoy. Truly is one price. I can’t wait to go back.

When is it NOT the best time to travel to Europe? No matter when you plan on visiting Europe, we’re sure you’ll love it!

Summer in Europe (between June to August) doesn’t need an introduction. Long sunny days, good gelato, breathtaking beach views - it’s Europe in all its glory. But for a springy touch, visit Europe during March and April - when flowers & fields are in full bloom and the temperature is still cool.

Winter in Europe is amazing too. Who wouldn’t love skiing down the Austrian Alps? Not to mention, fewer crowds and cheaper stays. And for chilly nights and vibrant shades of orange and red - visit Europe during October.

What are the best destinations to visit in Europe?

You really aren’t gonna ask us to choose, are you? This depends entirely on what you wanna see. But some of the must-do destinations in Europe would be Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, London, Prague, Rome, Ibiza and all the Alps! And guess what? Do I need a visa to travel to Europe?

What should I pack for a Europe trip?

Your passport, of course! But some other essentials would be:

• Comfortable shoes: There’s gonna be a lot of walking around • Light jacket: It tends to get quite windy • Crossbody bags: To carry all your stuff when you’re licking away that gelato  

And the rest would depend on which season you’re arriving in Europe. Get loose, breathable clothes for summer, or thick jackets and multiple layers for winter.  

How many days should I spend in Europe?

Is the tap water safe to drink in Europe?

Yep. You’ll be fine drinking tap water in most of Europe. But it’s always a good idea to double check with your Trip Manager if you’re doubtful.

You won’t have to worry about getting enough cash when you’re in Europe. Because ATMs in Europe are accessible as gelatos in Rome. Just stay wary of those sneaky ATM fees…

Is tipping customary in Europe?

Generally, tipping isn’t mandatory in Europe. And a lot of the time, service charges are included in the bill. But if you really like the food (which you will, you’re in Europe, after all) or service, leaving 5-10% is always appreciated.

Weather & Best Time to Visit Europe

Europe is a year round destination, but the weather is generally most pleasant from May to September.

Europe’s varied geography spans spans over 45 countries. Climates range from the sunny Greek isles to arctic Norwegian fjords. Each region has different weather, however in northern European countries (example - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK) December through March is very cold, with significant snowfall. 

Southern European areas (example - Southern France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece) tend to boast sunny days almost year-round, with some rainfall in winter. The southern regions also have the hottest summers. 

The more inland regions such as central Spain can become uncomfortably hot in July and August. Spring and fall are generally milder, though northern countries see plenty of rainfall and chilly temperatures.

You should also take note that July and August is a very busy period for Europe as most travellers take advantage of their vacation days and the fine weather. Crowds and and lines to popular attractions will peak during this time. On the other hand winter is also busiest time for Ski Resorts.

Best ways to travel through Europe

Traveling by train Most Europeans would agree that the cheapest way to travel through the many countries of the European continent is certainly by train. This  is because the railway infrastructure in Europe is very extensive and sophisticated. Some areas are only accessible by rail and rail journeys like the Glacier Express in Switzerland are a real treat to see.

Traveling by bus A popular way to travel for a tour of Europe would be a guided bus tour. These buses can be very luxurious and comfortable and can seat up to 50 people.

For those seeking to travel independently there is also an extensive network of a hop-on-hop-off bus called 'Busabout'. This service is most ideal for backpackers and can be a great alternative to the train. The bus stops at specific locations, normally at a hostel.

Traveling by car Self drive tours have become increasingly popular among South African citizens, especially in Ireland. You can collect your rental from almost any town or city across the continent and drive along a self made itinerary of your own design, staying at local guesthouses and hotels.

These are the cheapest European package holidays for summer 2024

The likes of Spain, Greece and Italy are surprisingly some of the most affordable, according to Which? Travel

Plenty of us love the freedom of browsing for the most convenient flights and then for the perfect little hotel. However, sometimes it’s nice to save on time, faff and money by booking a package holiday  – and thanks to a new ranking, we now know exactly where to go for the cheapest package trips across Europe .

The experts at  Which? Travel have analysed over 4,500 holidays that are still available to book for this summer, and compiled a list of the ten cheapest destinations offering a package deal. 

And the best value deals might not be where you’d expect. Places such as Bulgaria and Türkiye  have garnered quite the budget-friendly rep, but classic holiday hot spots such as Greece , Spain and Italy actually boast some of the cheapest options for 2024. 

Claiming the top spot is Kalymnos , a lesser-known Dodecanese island in Greece characterised by secluded little coves and ridiculously blue waters. The cheapest holiday was £794 per person, but the average here is £847 (€987.50). Given it’s around a 40-minute boat ride from Kos, that’s a pretty good deal. 

In fourth place, it’s the Costa Brava in Spain – we know, we’re shocked too. The gorgeous stretch of coast just north of Barcelona has some cracking beaches, and the package holiday price here is around £952 (€1,110) per person. 

But the biggest and maybe most pleasant surprise of all is that the Amalfi Coast has made the top 10, in spot number six. At around £977 (€1,139), this typically expensive region actually boasts a couple of low-key resorts such as Minori and Maiori , which are great options for a cheaper getaway. What ’ s more,  the region will soon be getting an airport , finally !

P riority Pass has revealed its best-rated airport lounges around the world — and you're definitely going to want to tick off a few of them on future trips.

Pulled together as part of the Priority Pass Excellence Awards, this roundup features the highest-rated lounges across the Priority Pass network , their rankings decided by 379,966 member ratings and reviews.

Each lounge is judged on a range of criteria, including quality of facilities, customer service, food and beverage selection, and overall satisfaction, with the awards recognizing best-in-class lounges both regionally and globally.

Here's a rundown of the lounges that received the best ratings for 2024.

Global and Europe

The Vienna Lounge was refurbished in 2022 and is likely the slickest Priority Pass lounge we've ever visited, so it's no surprise that it received the best ratings in Europe and globally from visitors. It features hip art nouveau stylings, a beautiful Viennese cafe and top-tier food and drinks. And that's before we even mention the airy outdoor terrace with runway views and the artwork displayed throughout the lounge, which includes various works from renowned Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.

"The Vienna Lounge is all about symbolising impressive Vienna elegance and Austrian cuisine for travellers," said Julian Jäger, joint CEO and chief operating officer of Vienna Airport, in reaction to the win. "To be named Global Lounge of The Year amongst 1,500 other lounges and travel experiences is an outstanding confirmation of the quality of our services."

This lounge haven in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is a perfect backdrop for travelers wanting to relax and enjoy freshly prepared (and delicious) Taiwanese delicacies during work downtime. You'll find a classy environment with grade-A service, food and drinks, and other amenities.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Priority Pass' standout offering in Brazil, the Advantage VIP Lounge, garnered great reviews for its excellent gastronomy experiences — which, along with regionally inspired menus, include delicious gluten-free options and frequent theme days that pay ode to Curitiba.

Highly commended: Macondo Lounge, Barranquilla Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ) in Colombia

Also recognized was the Macondo Lounge in Colombia, which prides itself on its fully stocked selection of newspapers and magazines, friendly service and diverse seating areas.

The Middle East and Africa

The Petra Lounge was ranked highly thanks to its warm and inviting front-of-house staff, great food and vast seating area decorated in modern Middle Eastern-influenced details that reference the region's rich culture.

Highly commended: Primeclass Lounge, Muscat International Airport (MCT) in Oman

The highly regarded Primeclass Lounge is not only a favorite of Priority Pass members but was also referenced in glowing terms repeatedly by members of the Priority Pass team when TPG recently asked for recommendations. The lounge features a sprawling open buffet, a gaming zone, a cinema, a spa and a kids play zone.

North America

The VIP Lounge Aguascalientes topped the ratings across North America thanks to its vibrant food and drink services and comfortable, pet-friendly space.

Finally, the Escape Lounge at Syracuse Hancock International Airport also received a worthwhile nod, thanks, in part, to its highly praised seasonal menus, which are changed frequently throughout the year.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a trip in europe.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement. This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
