Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham on stage in Sydney.

Fleetwood Mac review – still winning over the generations in Sydney

All Phones Arena, Sydney The band who’ve made peace with the past put on a truly group effort, satisfying old, new and future pop lovers with a nostalgia-light set

W hat brings someone to a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2015? Hazy memories of Rumours the first time round. The bashed up vinyl inherited from a parent. An interview with Haim, wearing their influences as openly as their Stevie Nicks-inspired style. Or pure and simple love of pop, never mind the vintage?

Whatever the reason, Sydney’s All Phones Arena boasts a surprisingly all-ages crowd for the first of Fleetwood Mac’s anticipated Australian dates (a 2013 visit was cancelled when band member John McVie started treatment for cancer).

The band have been on hiatus for three months since the last leg of their On With The Show world tour. Lindsey Buckingham complains of blisters on his fingers. Stevie struggles to remember a well-worn anecdote of her first trip to the Velvet Underground in San Francisco.

At least, they tell us they’re blistering and struggling. From here in the side seats, they’re smashing it out of the Olympic park. And even if the three other bandmates vie for less attention than these famous ex-lovers – Mick Fleetwood happy for the most part behind his drumkit – this is a true group show.

A 23-song set takes us from the predictable opener of Chains to the inevitable closer of Go Your Own Way, plus two encores, the second a stripped-down take on Songbird showcasing Christine McVie, back to complete the Rumours line-up. Between those bookends, the biggest crowd reactions come for Tusk, with its relentless Trojan marching beat and later, Buckingham’s guitar-geek pleasing – if somewhat indulgent – solo on Big Love.

John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood in Sydney, 22 October 2015

You’d expect a night of nostalgia and, sure, we get some songs that haven’t been performed for years: Tusk album track, Think About Me, for example, which “didn’t do very well at the time but we’ve always been rather fond of,” says Christine McVie.

But overall, there’s a sense that the band who say they are in their “last act” have made peace with the past. Introducing Bleed to Love Her (last done live in 1997), it’s Buckingham once again who brings up the heartbreak and breakups and breakdowns that make up the Fleetwood Mac truth and myth.

With everyone back together, “you have to assume a great deal of love,” he concludes – what were songs of “alienation” are now songs of “meditation”. Don’t start, Lindsey. We’ve already got Stevie for all that hippy dippy stuff. The tiny queen of the twirl clops around unselfconciously in her black platforms and shawls, her voice as unforced as her persona.

What brings someone to a Fleetwood Mac gig? In my case, it’s rescuing a friend, a first-time mother who’s barely slept in four-and-a-half months. The wall-to-wall hits visibly revive her, but we each have our songs we need to hear. Mine’s Everywhere. It comes early and doesn’t disappoint, Christine McVie’s vocals unshowy, the song dripping with the tingly feels it’s always had.

My companion is waiting for Landslide, which doesn’t turn up for over an hour. Nicks launches into a rambling “Don’t give up on your dreams” speech before duetting with Buckingham into the familiar chorus: “Time makes you bolder / Even children get older / And I’m getting older too.”

The next day I get a message on my phone – “I was singing to Zara all morning” – and a photo of a smiling baby. Looks like the Mac magic is winning over another generation.

Fleetwood Mac founding member Mick Fleetwood says Australian tour will not be band's final goodbye

Fleetwood Mac together again on tour

They are one of the world's most successful bands, defying all odds to remain intact after almost half a century.

Fleetwood Mac are currently touring Australia with the same line-up that produced one of the biggest selling albums of all time — Rumours.

Christine McVie is back in the band after 17 years in semi-retirement alongside Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and John McVie.

The band's drummer and founding member Mick Fleetwood told 702 ABC Sydney Breakfast presenter Robbie Buck it was great to be back on the road.

"It has not got old," he said.

"We have been on the road now with Christine for many, many months all over the world and it is truly amazing seeing this woman return."

Fleetwood said this tour would not be the last time the Australian public would hear from the band.

"This is not goodbye," he said.

"Stevie [Nicks] mentioned it to me the other night, saying: 'this can't be the goodbye tour because no one said that it was'."

Experiencing the first Australian concert

The opening Sydney performance for the On With the Show tour was the first in two months for the band, after a break from the US and European legs.

And while Buckingham cheerfully complained of new blisters on his guitar hand, there was no doubt amongst the audience this was a band that could still move as one.

The band wore its history on its sleeve with pride.

Fleetwood brimmed with energy behind his giant kit, while the recently returned McVie glowed as she delivered Songbird and Don't Stop.

Nicks proved her voice was still top of the game. belting out Gypsy and Dreams, all the while executing her slow-motion dervish whirls.

Remembering Rumours

Fleetwood Mac- Rumours cover

Although one of the highest selling albums of all time, the recording of Rumours was beset by a litany of relationship breakdowns within the band.

Fleetwood admitted he was still amazed the band has stood the test of time.

"I often go back to the feeling that I get when I see this strange convoluted bunch of people walking on that stage, they have all been involved at such high levels of emotion at various times," he said.

"John and Chris were married and then went their separate ways, Stevie and Lindsay; I had a relationship for a while with Stevie."

Fleetwood said some of the relationships would never be fully repaired.

"It is like the cauldron of emotive challenges," he said.

"If you were looking at it on a piece of paper you would say 'this is not possible, this script for this film is pure fantasy'.

"But we look back on it and we did survive it — with damage and also with growth.

"I don't think any one member of this band would sit around and say this has not been worth it, even with the pain involved."

Fleetwood Mac are currently in Australia playing shows in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Geelong, Brisbane and the Hunter Valley.

Fleetwood Mac announce Australian Tour

FLEETWOOD MAC – ‘On With The Show’ Tour – All five original band members back together in Aust & NZ Oct-Nov 2015

Fleetwoodd Mac 2015

The rumours are true – the legendary FLEETWOOD MAC will bring their On With The Show World Tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2015.

The On With The Show Tour will mark Fleetwood Mac’s first series of concert dates in Australia and New Zealand since 2009’s sold-out Unleashed Tour.

Touring as a five-piece for the first time since 1998, one of music’s most enduring groups of all time, Fleetwood Mac, will play a selection of arena, stadium and winery shows this October – November.

All five original band members are back together, with Christine McVie rejoining band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks after a 16-year absence.

The news of Fleetwood Mac’s return is particularly welcomed by Australian and New Zealand fans after the band were unfortunately forced to cancel their sold-out 2013 dates.

The On With The Show Tour will see Fleetwood Mac on stage for close to two and a half hours, showcasing hits and classic songs from their career that spans more than four decades and global album sales in excess of 100 million, including songs such as: “The Chain”, “Dreams”, “Second Hand News”, “Rhiannon”, “Sara”, “Gold Dust Woman”, “Tusk”, “Looking Out for Love”, “Don’t Stop”, “Go Your Own Way”…and the list goes on and on.

Tickets for all shows go on sale at 10am on Wednesday April 1.

Fleetwood Mac’s sold out shows throughout North America have garnered rave reviews, including this one by 100% ROCK MAGAZINE’s own Jeff Everett

“The principal emotion during the nearly 2 1/2-hour performance was the joy of having keyboardist McVie back in this group… She brought high harmonies and several songs, including ‘Little Lies,’ ‘You Make Loving Fun’ and the closing ‘Songbird,’ back into the repertoire. Nicks hasn’t sounded this good since the early ’90’s. What a rhythm machine and what an articulate emotional guitarist Buckingham is.” – Minneapolis Star Tribune

“It’s still magical. Between Buckingham’s epic guitar solos, Mick Fleetwood’s massive drumming, John McVie’s strong bass work, Nicks’ patented spins to punctuate the lovely ‘Gypsy’ and Christine McVie’s lush vocals, Fleetwood Mac looked ready to take on what Buckingham has called ‘the next chapter.'” – Newsday

“Fleetwood Mac has the intricacy, elegance and underlying punch of its songs…” – The New York Times.

“With Christine’s songs back in the set, her calm, angular presence back on the stage, there was an undeniable feeling of rejuvenation… Fleetwood and John McVie on bass reminded concert-goers why the band is named for them… They still put a layer of muscle behind everything the band did… Buckingham was ferocious and tireless as lead guitar. This man is a vital musical presence – the soul of the band. Ditto for the vitality of Nicks, its cauldron-stirring spirit… Her showcase songs, ‘Landslide,’ ‘Gold Dust Woman’ and, especially ‘Silver Springs,’ were the night’s highlights.” – Chicago Tribune

Fleetwood Mac announce an Australian tour!

One of the most treasured bands of the 70s and 80s is back and ready to take on Australia.

Much like many thousands of Australians, I was heartbroken when Fleetwood Mac cancelled their 2013 tour due to illness. But wipe those tears away, as they’ve just announced a new string of stadium dates throughout Aus and NZ this October.

After 16 years, Christine McVie has rejoined the band to embark on the On With The Show Tour. It’ll be their first tour as a five-piece since 1988, and their first Australian tour since 2009.

Starting off in Sydney, get set to hear those gorgeous classics that you know and love so well. From The Chain  to  Don’t Stop,  from  Dreams  to  Go Your Own Way,  we can guarantee you’ll be treated to an absolute smorgasbord of musical delights.

With a career that spans more than four decades, they have become one of the most enduring, not to mention popular groups of all time. Their recent tour of the US has scored them rave reviews from a selection of the biggest music critics. The New York Times says,  “Fleetwood Mac has the intricacy, elegance and underlying punch of its songs…”  while Newsday assures us that “it’s still magical.”

Considering how many were left disappointed by their last tour’s cancellation, these tickets will be seriously hot property. Get in quick before they sell out.

Tickets go on sale April 1 at 10 am.

Fleetwood Mac Add Another New Show To 2015 Australian Tour

By Tom Williams

Fleetwood Mac have added yet another new show to their forthcoming Australian tour, after selling out their first Brisbane date. The newly-announced Brisbane performance will take place at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday, 12th November.

The Australian leg of the Mac’s On With The Show World Tour will make its way around the country this October/November, and will see the group perform with its “original”, non-Peter Green lineup, marking their first tour as a five-piece since 1998.

With 10 Australian shows lined up, the On With The Show World Tour kicks off in Sydney on 22nd October, before heading to Perth, Melbourne, Geelong, Brisbane and the Hunter Valley. The tour will see the legendary group play material from across their stellar discography.

Fleetwood Mac last toured Australia in 2009, but did so without the original lineup. View the band’s updated 2015 tour and ticket details in full, below.

PEDESTRIAN.TV

Being Stevie Nicks might become a little more naturally after seeing her belt it out in the flesh, something that you can and should do later this year: Fleetwood Mac have announced their 2015 tour Down Under.

*heavy breathing intensifies*

FM stalwarts have reunited for the tour, as Christine McVie is back on board: the Australian tour will see Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie and John McVie tour a string of capital city and regional dates across the country in October-November. Christine McVie broke her long Fleetwood Mac hiatus last year, after leaving the band in 1998 .

You and your parents, for once, are both equally keen about something. Dates for Fleetwood Mac’s tour are below; tickets are on sale on April 1 . SA, NT, Tassie and ACT, always the bridesmaids, will have to go their own way in October to a more blessed capital city, as all miss out:

SYDNEY | October 22, October 24 | Allphones Arena PERTH | October 30 | Domain Stadium MELBOURNE | November 2, November 4 | Rod Laver Arena GEELONG | November 7 | Mt Duneed Estate BRISBANE | November 10 | Brisbane Entertainment Centre HUNTER VALLEY | November 14 | Hope Estate Winery

Fleetwood Mac: On With The Show World Tour 2015

Fleetwood Mac: On With The Show World Tour 2015

The rumours are true – the legendary Fleetwood Mac will bring their On With The Show World Tour to Australia and New Zealand in 2015. The On With The Show Tour will mark Fleetwood Mac’s first series of concert dates in Australia and New Zealand since 2009’s sold-out Unleashed Tour.  If you happened to be on the of many fans who missed out on their sold-out 2013 dates, here is your chance to catch Fleetwood Mac on Tuesday November 10 and Thursday November 12, live at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Touring as a five-piece for the first time since 1998, one of music’s most enduring groups of all time, Fleetwood Mac, will play a selection of arena, stadium and winery shows this October & November.  All five members of the classic 1975 lineup are back together, with Christine McVie rejoining band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks after a 16-year absence. The On With The Show Tour will see Fleetwood Mac on stage for close to two and a half hours, showcasing hits and classic songs from their career that spans more than four decades and global album sales in excess of 100 million, including songs such as, ‘The Chain’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Second Hand News’, ‘Rhiannon’, ‘Sara’, ‘Gold Dust Woman’, ‘Tusk’, ‘Looking Out for Love’, ‘Don’t Stop’, ‘Go Your Own Way’ – and the list goes on and on.

Tickets are on sale now. Doors open 5:00 pm and the show kicks off from 8:00 pm – 10:45 pm. See more information online.

Taylor Swift and Fleetwood Mac lead the blockbuster concert box office in Australia for 2015

NO matter what age you are, there’s a concert for everyone in this blockbuster list of artists still set to tour Australia in the second half of 2015.

THE world’s biggest pop stars didn’t always include Australia on their world tour.

It was only a couple of decades ago that frustrated fans organised petitions as a last-ditch attempt to entice Paul McCartney, Madonna and Depeche Mode to return to the Australian concert stage.

Madonna is finally returning after a 23-year absence to play arenas in 2016 and Britpop heroes Blur perform here this week 18 years after their last visit.

The declining value of recorded music sales via downloads or CDs has forced artists back on the road and Australia is an almost automatic destination for everyone.

The recent Pollstar mid year report revealed Michael Gudinski’s Frontier Touring landed at No. 8 among the world’s highest ticket sellers.

Punters bought 932,426 tickets to Gudinski’s tours this year including Ed Sheeran, The Script, Rod Stewart, Eagles, Kylie and Foo Fighters.

Gudinski will be celebrating a blockbuster 2015 with Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and Sheeran playing gigs at the end of the year.

Nine Live, who promoted One Direction and Ricky Martin, came in at No. 26 on Pollstar’s top 100, with sales of almost 230,000 tickets.

Pollstar estimates our leading promoters sold close to 1.7 million tickets to concerts this year, not including the tours promoted by Live Nation Australasia whose sales are counted in the multinational parent company’s accounts.

They brought Paul Simon and Sting, Nickelback and Motley Crue’s final run to arenas this year.

With only a handful of national festivals remaining, the concert business has refocused on delivering “event” gigs by artists who enjoy a long love affair with Australian audiences including Robbie Williams and AC/DC.

Fleetwood Mac’s return with Christine McVie returning to play with the band is one of the most anticipated gigs, with their world jaunt on track to be one of the biggest grossing global tours.

Sydneysiders are being treated to a slate of top acts booking their final shows in the Qantas Credit Union Arena, affectionately known as the Ent Cent, ahead of its demolition in December.

Cold Chisel will recreate their famous Last Stand sets from their farewell concerts in 1983 while Elton John, who holds the record for the most shows by an artist at the city venue, will be the last to perform there on December 19.

“Australia has been one of my favourite countries to tour in ever since my first visit there at the start of my worldwide career in 1971. Some of my most memorable concerts have taken place in venues all across the continent. The Australian audiences always seem to bring out the best in us,” John said.

Of course Taylor Swift fans will be well versed in her setlist, costumes and between-song banter by the time she kicks off the Australian leg of her 1989 World Tour having savoured the myriad YouTube clips since she began the shows in North America in May.

Jessica Rowe has revealed why her husband Peter Overton has been “missing” from his presenting duties on 9News for the last few weeks.

An awkward moment unfolds as Meghan Markle asks a woman not to pose next to Prince Harry at a charity polo match.

The TV star was shopping for a new bed one minute, and the next he was “trying to stem the bleeding” from victims of the Bondi attacks.
