This was the final night of the Foozer tour with Weezer. Foo Fighters played a prank on Weezer during their set including sending male exotic dancers onto the stage on multiple occasions. Dave Grohl also appeared on stage playing acoustic guitar on 'Undone (The Sweater Song) before smashing his guitar.

Foo Fighters; Weezer

Co-headlining has forced alt-rock vets Foo Fighters and Weezer to up the ante for each other. As the tour comes to a close, both bands appear to be in top form and deserve credit not just as nostalgia acts but current rock forefathers.

The Foo Fighters continue their streak of consistent, muscular performances. Dave Grohl, the ex-drummer for Nirvana, is such an affable, friendly front man — and his songs so dynamically dramatic — that every time the band breaks its choruses down into hand-muted guitar-and-drum builds, it feels like the first time the band’s ever prepared to explode. When the explosions finally come, they always feel perfectly executed and propulsive.

Grohl’s a natural rock star, using the whole stage to his advantage; as the band played through “Best of You” and the fiery “Stacked Actors,” he ran the length of the stage, beckoning the audience to participate. The Foo Fighters understand that a chunky guitar pedal and a great melody is sometimes all it takes to inspire mass catharsis.

Popular on Variety

Weezer — fronted by Rivers Cuomo, often one of the least assuming (and least exciting) icons of modern rock — seemed like a new band, not just playing through their repertoire but actually having a good time doing it for a change.

Instead of the contemplative and, let’s face it, boring side seen at this year’s Coachella, the new, improved Cuomo headbangs, throws his hands in the air in victory salutes and even sometimes hands off guitar duties to come to the front of the stage and do a herky-jerky indie rock dance.

The band’s songs were re-worked throughout: “Don’t Let Go” was introduced with Cuomo’s bragging about it being new wave, and the new, funky moog keyboard intro proved it. Later, Cuomo appeared in the middle of the arena to play “Island in the Sun” acoustic, playing to the nosebleeds in a sign of band/audience solidarity — an aesthetic continued when the group invited an audience member onstage to play acoustic guitar on “Undone (The Sweater Song).”

Foo Fighters/ Weezer Tour Confirmed -- But The Suspense Continues ...

foo fighters weezer tour 2005

It was probably the worst-kept secret in the history of rock-and-roll touring, but after months of speculation, it has been confirmed that the Foo Fighters and Weezer will join forces on a co-headlining arena tour starting in early September.

As recently as Tuesday, management reps for both acts were playing coy with info on the tour (see [article id="1505595"]"Where Will The Foo Fighters/ Weezer Tour Play? Good Question"[/article]), acknowledging that it probably would happen, but withholding somewhat important details like actual dates, cities and venues. On Friday (July 15), 23 cities that the tour will hit were announced -- but nothing else.

And you thought "Trapped in the Closet" was suspenseful.

Fans and the media weren't the only ones who seemed to be in the dark about the whole thing. When MTV News spoke with members of the Foos during last month's "24 Hours of Foo" special on MTV2 (see [article id="1504046"]"Tireless Dave Grohl Screams Twice As Hard On Double LP"[/article]), they were equally excited -- and mystified -- by the idea of touring with the Weez.

"The next year for this band is going to be packed with touring -- we're going to be doing stuff back-to-back. But we're really excited about touring with Weezer," drummer Taylor Hawkins said. "Nothing's in concrete yet, but we know when and where we're going to do it."

"I hope it's confirmed. We keep talking about it," joked guitarist Chris Shiflett. "It'd be great. I'll beg if I have to: Please tour with us, Weezer!"

Well, Shiflett can quit groveling, because although Friday's announcement is not a definitive tour itinerary, it is at least a start.

The cities, in the order they're listed in the press release, are as follows: Atlanta; Sunrise, Florida; Tampa, Florida; Houston; Austin, Texas; Dallas; San Diego; Phoenix; Denver; Minneapolis; Chicago; Champaign, Illinois; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Detroit; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Baltimore; Worcester, Massachusetts; New York; Philadelphia; Fresno, California; Seattle and Portland, Oregon.

More cities are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, as well as venues, ticket prices -- and hey, maybe some dates! The Kaiser Chiefs have already been confirmed as the openers on one leg of the tour, from September 29 to October 11.

According to management for both bands, the Foo/ Weez co-headlining tour will run until late October.

Josh Freese Reveals Bittersweet Reason He Wishes He Wasn’t Part of the Foo Fighters

by Chris Piner April 18, 2024, 10:04 am

Having a love for music at a young age, Josh Freese turned that love into a career that continues today. Throughout his time on the stage, the drummer not only found himself part of the rock band A Perfect Circle, but he even became a member of Guns N’ Roses. But that was just the start as Freese appeared on over 400 albums since the 1980s. He performed with Weezer, Nine Inch Nails, and Sting. In 2023, the drummer joined the Foo Fighters after drummer Taylor Hawkins passed away. And according to Freese, he wished he never had to play for the Foo Fighters.

Videos by American Songwriter

Back in 2022, news broke that Hawkins passed away at the age of 50. At the time, the death sent a shockwave through the Foo Fighters . Not only did the band lose a friend but also a drummer. Needing a replacement, the band turned to Freese, who eventually joined the group. Speaking with the Daily Star , Freese admitted , “It continues to be bittersweet. Part of me wants to say like I wish I wasn’t there at all. I wish there wasn’t a reason for me to be the drummer in Foo Fighters. I was friendly acquaintances with Taylor for like 25 years and then in the last five/six years we became a lot closer, which makes the whole thing even more odd.”

Josh Freese Worried About The Foo Fighters After Taylor Hawkins Passed

While spending decades in the music industry, Freese knew the members of the Foo Fighters as friends. He explained, “I’ve known Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee for 30 years, well before they were in the band, and I met Dave before he was in Nirvana.. I met Dave at a concert at Cal State Long Beach in like 1990 when he was in Scream.”

Always praising their talent, Freese worried about the band when Hawkins passed away. Knowing his personality, the drummer believed the Foo Fighters would struggle moving forward. “After Taylor’s passing, first thing I thought was how are these guys going to move on from this – Taylor was such an important component, on and off stage. And he wasn’t just a drummer, you know. He was such a big personality. [I thought] ‘Are they even going to go on…does Dave go solo now?’”

While missing their drummer and fellow friend, the Foo Fighters, with the help of Freese, continue to share their music with fans.

JOSH FREESE On Being Asked To Join FOO FIGHTERS: 'It Felt Like Someone Kind Of Socked Me In The Stomach'

Josh Freese , who officially became FOO FIGHTERS ' new drummer a year ago, filling the vacancy left by the late Taylor Hawkins , spoke to producer and YouTuber Rick Beato about how he landed the coveted gig. He said in part (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "On my children's lives, I had zero plans of being called to be the drummer. And everyone and their mother — my neighbor walking the dog, 'Hey Josh , the FOO FIGHTERS call you yet?' Other people hitting me up, other drummers, Reddit forums, ' Josh Freese is gonna be the guy.' I'm going, 'I don't even know if they're gonna continue on [after Taylor 's death].' And most people I knew said, 'Oh, they're gonna have to. They're gonna figure it out.' I was, like, 'Well, maybe. Who knows?' I didn't ask them that question during those [ Taylor Hawkins ] tribute [concerts in September 2022]. Once again, I wanted to give everybody space. I wasn't gonna be another guy coming at Dave [ Grohl , FOO FIGHTERS frontman], going, 'So dude, if you need a drummer, I'm around. I'm just saying.' I didn't mention it once, and was busy enough and making a good enough living already that I wasn't freaked out about it. I wasn't going, 'God, I hope they call. I hope they call.' I was, like, 'You know what? Whatever happens is gonna happen.' And that's how I kind of like to roll."

He continued: "Months went on after that second, L.A. [ Taylor Hawkins tribute concert]. I guess it was September [2022 when the two shows took place]. And Dave had said that he'd written a bunch of songs. He was gonna record a bunch of stuff after those shows. So, cool. So it sounded like he was gonna make a record. And then I guess it was right before Christmas that year, 2022, and I got a call from him. I got a missed call. I was on a walk with my wife and some of our dogs, and I go, 'Ah, Dave just tried calling me like 20 minutes ago.' And she's, like, 'I know why he's calling you.' I was, like, 'Easy. I'm not thinking that.' I swear to God, that's not why I thought. I go, 'You know what? He might be having a New Year's Eve party. He might be doing a project where he has all those drummer friends of ours that perform at the thing, we each play a track. He could be calling me for numerous reasons, but I'm not gonna pretend like that's why he's calling me.' I called him back, and we small-talked about Christmas and our kids and do they still believe in Santa Claus ? And who's the hardest to shop for? And just this silly small-talk family stuff, if anything. I said, 'Hey, did you go record?' He goes, 'Yeah, we recorded a bunch of stuff. And I played drums, and I'm really happy with the way it sounds. I'm really excited about it. And we had the drummer talk. And we want you to be the guy.' And it felt like someone kind of socked me in the stomach. I didn't go, 'Wow, yippee, this is so cool.' I didn't get excited like that. It was almost like I got the wind knocked out of me. And I was, like, 'Oh my God.' I was, like, 'Here we go.' 'Cause I knew… I had time to think about it and all that, but I was, like, come on. After the holidays, Dave and I got together and talked and he played me the new record, we were talking, and even there's sometimes when you go, 'You know you've gotta do this, right?'"

Freese went on to say that he had no doubt he would accept the offer to become FOO FIGHTERS ' new drummer. "It couldn't have gone down any other way after being asked, and being asked by someone that I've respected forever, not just as a songwriter and a singer/guitarist, but as a drummer," Josh explained. "First and foremost for me, Dave is such a bad motherfucker, man. And he just innately has this thing. That stuff can't be taught; it just can't be taught. You can try to explain it to somebody, but you're either gonna do it or you're not. And he was blessed with being able to do it and just deliver. So, for me, as a drummer, it's great. And I used to talk about it with Taylor all the time. He was, like, 'Oh, man, it's so cool. Look at Dave .' He loved Dave 's drumming, and we'd talk about it."

Freese continued: "I've made records with bands where the singer maybe used to play drums. But Dave 's a drummer's drummer. And so it's not, like, 'Oh, yeah, he used to play drums.' Nah, he's the drummer. And I've tried to let that be a source of inspiration and excitement when I'm playing with him and playing in a band with him rather than letting it intimidate me or freak me out. 'Cause if you start going down that path, it could intimidate you and freak you out. 'My God, I'm Dave Grohl 's drummer.' But he makes it so comfortable and good and natural, the way we play together. And as a drummer, his rhythm is great. Most bands, when you've got a break, you've got a four-bar break and the guitar is playing, I'm making sure to keep that time on the hi-hat. [With Dave , I] never have to [do that]. It's right there all the time. Ah, it's so cool. It's so cool. And when he turns around and we lock in, luckily — maybe one day it will become nerve racking — it's never been nerve racking for me. It's always fun and exciting, 'cause it's kind of laid out that way. It's not some heavy trip or weird thing. It's just all good. It's all good stuff."

FOO FIGHTERS revealed Freese as part of its touring lineup on May 21, 2023 during a pre-tour livestream called "Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts" . Freese was unveiled as the drummer during the livestream after comedic cameos by Chad Smith of RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS , Tommy Lee of MÖTLEY CRÜE and Danny Carey of TOOL .

Prior to joining the FOO FIGHTERS , Freese had most recently been drumming for Danny Elfman but was recently replaced by Ilan Rubin . Freese was also touring with THE OFFSPRING up until 2022, with former SUICIDAL TENDENCIES drummer Brandon Pertzborn stepping in to officially replace him.

Freese is a veteran session drummer who has performed with GUNS N' ROSES , A PERFECT CIRCLE , PUDDLE OF MUDD , NINE INCH NAILS , WEEZER , PARAMORE , THE REPLACEMENTS , Sting and THE VANDALS , among many others. He has also played more than 300 recordings ranging in genres from pop to rock to country.

FOO FIGHTERS ' 11th album, "But Here We Are" , was released in June 2023 on Roswell / RCA .

Hawkins tragically passed away in March 2022 at the age of 50.

Hawkins was found dead in a hotel room in Colombia, shortly before FOO FIGHTERS were due to play a festival in Bogotá. No cause of death was ever announced.

Hawkins had been the FOO FIGHTERS drummer for 25 years, taking over from original drummer William Goldsmith in 1997. He is survived by his wife Alison and their three children.

FOO FIGHTERS staged two tribute concerts in honor of Hawkins . The first tribute concert took place September 3, 2022 at London's Wembley Stadium. A Los Angeles concert was held on September 27, 2022 and raised money for Musicares and Music Support charities and served as a farewell party for Hawkins 's adopted hometown.

Other notable tributes to come in the months following Hawkins 's death included a segment at the 2022 Grammy Awards , a drum circle in Taylor 's hometown, and a live performance of the FOO FIGHTERS song "My Hero" by more than 1,000 musicians.

Josh Freese Reveals His Shock When Asked To Join Foo Fighters

W ith a mother and father having a deep love for music, it seemed only fitting that their son, Josh Freese, would follow in their footsteps. While his father conducted the Disney World band and his mother worked as a classical pianist, Freese went a different route, playing alongside bands like Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Sublime with Rome, Danny Elfman, and even Sting. Although a top drummer who once performed with Guns N’ Roses, the musician recently discussed how shocked he was when asked to play with the Foo Fighters. And to make it even more surprising, apparently, everyone knew but him.

Speaking with Rick Beato about his time in the spotlight, Freese explained how he only heard rumors about him playing with Foo Fighters. “On my children’s lives, I had zero plans of being called to be the drummer. Everyone and their mother, my neighbor walking the dog [were like], ‘Hey Josh, the Foo Fighters call you yet?’” He continued, “Other people were hitting me up, other drummers, Reddit forums… I’m going, ‘I don’t even know if they’re gonna continue.’ … Most people I knew said, ‘They’re gonna have to.’”

Josh Freese Explained How Invite Knocked The Wind Out Of Him

While rubbing shoulders with Dave Grohl at that Taylor Hawkins tribute in 2022, Freese noted how he didn’t bring up wanting to play with them. Although knowing that Grohl was working on music, he said, “I was on a walk with my wife and some of our dogs, and I go, ‘Ah, Dave just tried calling me like 20 minutes ago.’ And she’s like, ‘I know why he’s calling you.’ I was like, ‘Easy. I’m not thinking that.’ I swear to God, that’s not why I thought.”

[RELATED: Josh Freese Joins A Perfect Circle for Spring 2024 Tour]

Although eventually asked to play with the Foo Fighters, Freese insisted the moment “felt like someone kind of socked me in the stomach. I didn’t go, ‘Wow, yippee, this is so cool!’ I didn’t get excited like that. It was almost like I got the wind knocked out of me. And I was like, ‘Oh my God.’”

While giving his first performance with Grohl in May 2023, Freese recalled fighting the nerves. “If you start going down that path, it could intimidate you and freak you out. ‘My God, I’m Dave Grohl’s drummer!’ But he makes it so comfortable and good and natural, the way we play together. … It’s all good stuff.”

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

The 25 Concert Tours You Can’t Afford to Miss This Summer

Photo Collage: AARP; (Source: Photo by: Will Heath/NBC via Getty Images; Photo by Jim Bennett/Getty Images; Photo by Mike Lawrie/Getty Images; Chris Putnam/Future Publishing via Getty Images; Photo by Paras Griffin/Getty Images for ONE Musicfest; Getty Images)

After a massive slump during COVID , the concert industry is again sh-boom, sh-booming! The gross for the top 100 North American tours in 2023 reached $6.63 billion, up 39.5 percent over 2022, with attendance nearly doubling, to 15,008 per show, according to Pollstar.

And this year is shaping up to be another box office blowout. Despite the national outrage over price spikes for eggs, airfare and gas , music lovers seem immune to ticket shock. Ticket prices climbed 22 percent last year, to an average of $135.88, compared to $111.49 in 2022. And the trend is pointing skyward.

Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour and Beyonce’s “Renaissance World” tour ranked first and second last year, but boomer acts remain the tour circuit’s lucrative and reliable summer tentpole, delivering packed arenas and sheds year after year as fans flock to relish the oldies and rekindle the past.

Here are the acts to catch this sunny season.

Heart (April 20–May 24, Aug. 10–Nov. 22)

Sisters Ann Wilson, 73, and Nancy Wilson, 70, haven’t released an album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken , but they have decades of hits, including “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams” and “Alone,” to draw from on their “Royal Flush” tour . Cheap Trick opens.

Kenny Chesney (April 20–Aug. 23)

After hitting arenas last year, country star Chesney, 56, has booked 18 stadiums for shows with openers including the Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker, his duet partner on chart-topper “When the Sun Goes Down.” All but one of the shows are on Saturdays.

Billy Joel (April 26–Nov. 9)

The Piano Man, 74, has scheduled only 13 dates , four of them at New York’s Madison Square Garden, so ticket stampedes are likely. Fans are curious to know if “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first single in 17 years, will be added to his hit-heavy repertoire.

$20 off a Walmart+ annual membership

The Rolling Stones (April 28–July 17)

Mick Jagger , 80, Keith Richards, 80, Ron Wood, 76, and company continue their global “Hackney Diamonds” tour , named after last year’s highly praised album , the group’s first batch of originals since 2005’s  A Bigger Bang . Expect  Diamonds  cuts and lots of hits.

Stevie Nicks (May 3–June 21)

Between Fleetwood Mac’s songbook and her own solo catalog, singer-songwriter Nicks, 75, has a huge well of material to draw from as she extends a tour that started in February. She’s been performing crowd favorites “Landslide,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon” and “Edge of Seventeen” as well as Tom Petty hits in honor of her late friend.

George Strait (May 4–July 20, Dec. 7)

A touring juggernaut, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Strait, 71, resumes the record-breaking stadium tour he kicked off in 2023. He’s joined by Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. The King of Country serves up “his own Eras tour, leading a well-curated, decades-spanning set of songs,” according to  Billboard .

The rock belter’s “Summer Carnival” tour , which began last year, covers a wide range of material, from hits “So What,” “Get the Party Started” and “Who Knew” to the title track from her latest album,  Trustfall,  to such covers as Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” and Janis Joplin’s signature tune “Me and Bobby McGee.”
