The Ford Excursion is still alive and it's available with six doors

The last Ford Excursion rolled off the assembly line in 2005, but one Oklahoma-based shop hasn't let the hulking SUV die.

Based in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Custom Autos by Tim continues to make "new" Ford Excursions. The Detroit News profiled the shop in a Tuesday report. The shop typically marries an older Excursion body to a new F-Series Super Duty pickup chassis to create a "new" vehicle. Buyers have a few options. Current owners can bring their SUVs to owner Tim Huskey for a total rebuild, the shop can start from scratch with a Super Duty chassis the buyer provides, or the shop can use one of its stockpile of Super Duty chassis that it offers to buyers. The shop's biggest hook, however, is the fact that it will use the Super Duty chassis to create a stretched Excursion with six doors.

'New' Ford Excursion SUV from Custom Autos by Time

Prices start at $40,000 for buyers who bring their own vehicles, but Huskey said most people spend between $50,000 and $100,000 for a conversion. The business, to put it bluntly, is quite stable.

Huskey said he's certain he has enough business to last him for the next five years. It takes two months to complete each build, and right now, there's a two-month waiting list. The shop does about 40 Excursions each year.

The work varies for each customer, but Huskey is a master fabricator when it comes to building the "new" models. For example, one Excursion kept the original SUV's engine, dashboard, and transmission, while the rest was made up of used Excursions and F-Series Super Duties that had been scrapped due to damage. With business booming, Huskey said he'll need to start using F-650 chassis since they still match up with the Excursion's body. Unfortunately, he added he's not able to work with the latest trucks from Ford with their aluminum bodies .

At Ford, there's reportedly no regret for ending production of the mammoth SUV more than a decade ago. For Huskey, it created an opportunity.

Lifted luxury: inside the dps 6-door 2016 ford excursion build.

There are just some rides you can’t walk past without doing a double, or even triple-take. Diesel Performance Specialties (DPS) has built just such a vehicle by seamlessly mating a 6.7L King Ranch truck and a Ford Excursion SUV. With an insane 20 inches of lift, six doors, and wild amounts of chrome and powder coating, this 2016 “Excursion” is a truck like no other. But the question remains, how did they build it? It all started with two bare cabs and an idea. Shop owner Trevor Lima and the team at DPS wanted to build a flagship of a shop truck, but they didn’t want to build something cookie cutter. So the idea came about to build the SUV Ford didn’t–a 2016 take on a Ford excursion. Thus begun a project that was under the knife for over a full year.

Ford Excursions were built with 6.0L and 7.3L engines, neither of which were known to be powerhouses in stock form. Since DPS wanted to retain reliability and 100 percent emissions legality, they chose a newer ‘16 Ford with the 440 hp and 860 lb-ft 6.7L engine as a starting platform. From there, it was a complete custom build. Two frames were selected and then integrated into one, while also incorporating a drop frame that would allow for a huge lift. The body was also heavily modified (obviously) for the six-door setup, but the team also took the extra step of installing modern radiused rear fenders to compliment the setup up front. Virtually all of the bodywork was done in-house by DPS, including the fabrication of both front and rear bumpers.

Even with the skeleton of the truck finished (body and frame) there was still a ton of work left. Trevor was determined to have a drivable truck as well as a show truck, so they made lots of unseen changes, like re-gearing the front and rear axles with 4.88 gears, to help get the 11,000 pound ride moving. As the build went along, anything that wasn’t already painted white was either powder coated or chromed, including the entire underside of the truck. This meant the frame, axles, and suspension links would all become works of art, in addition to the custom crossover steering with PSC hydraulic assist.

Other than the body modifications, the bulk of the work definitely went into creating the wild 20 inches of lift that firmly sets the truck into the sky. Gone are the factory leaf springs, and instead the Excursion rides on Fox Racing coil-over shocks all the way around, that have a mammoth 14 inches of travel. The front Dana 60 axle and rear Sterling 10.5 are both hung by wildly unique rectangular 4-link suspension arms, that are also powder coated and chrome-plated. AMP Research Powersteps were also added so that passengers could actually climb into the Ford, and braided stainless brake lines were used because of the suspension’s immense travel.

After working hard on the Excursion for more than a year, it was finally finished. Is it an over-the-top show truck? Yes, but it’s also functional, and can seat a whole baseball team. Its stance is also something that’s immediately noticed, as the lift is nearly double the height that’s available in the regular aftermarket. For Trevor and DPS (who now builds show trucks out of Weatherford, Texas) it’s the perfect calling card, and quite a statement.

6-Door Trucks: The Ultimate Big Rigs

For some people, normal trucks are not enough and four doors are too few.

The advantages of pickup trucks are undeniable: large cargo space, rugged off-road capabilities, and passenger comfort, plus the ability to tow a caravan or boat for outdoorsy holidays. A pickup truck is the perfect vehicle if you're looking for versatility and practicality. But what if you have too many passengers in tow to fit into a standard pickup truck? A large family can quickly exceed the capabilities of a standard truck, and if you find yourself with more people than seats, you might start to consider getting a second vehicle. However, there is another option, one not often considered since it's not exactly a common choice: a custom-made six-door truck. These vehicles provide the complete package for someone who wants the benefits of a pickup truck with the passenger space of a three-row SUV plus an extra door or two to get children and pets in and out quickly and easily.

A rare sight on US roads, these custom jobs can be fairly expensive, but if running two vehicles is not an option, and you don't want to let go of the practical advantages a truck gives you, there are a few ways for you to get your hands on your very own six-door truck.

Where Can I Buy a 6-Door Truck?

No car manufacturer currently makes a mass-produced six-door truck, so if you're interested in one, you will have to look into custom conversions to get your dream vehicle. There are only a handful of small, specialized companies across the US that offer this type of custom build, so if you're looking for a six-door truck, these are your main options:

King Series Pickup

King Series Pickup is a customizing company based in South Dakota that specializes in six-door trucks. When founders Chad and Angel were faced with the dilemma of hauling a large blended family around, they opted not to buy a minivan and instead created their own custom six-door pickup truck. That first truck became a successful business specializing in converting Ford pickups into six-door monsters, with a range of options and styles available.

One project built by King Series is the six-door Excursion, blended with an F-350 Super Duty to bridge the gap between pickup and SUV, creating the ultimate six-door truck. The interior seats up to 11 passengers, making it an ideal choice to take the whole family on a road trip without compromising on space. The truck bed is lined with a protective coating spray to keep it in perfect condition even after exposure to the elements. A range of tech options are also available when you order a King Series truck, such as the WeBoost Drive Reach device to boost mobile phone signal in your vehicle during long journeys and dual port USB sockets to keep everyone charged up and entertained. Last but not least, a whole host of optional aesthetic features are available to personalize your truck, including custom leather upholstery and smoked glass LED lights.

Custom Autos by Tim - The Stretch Truck Company

Custom Autos by Tim is based in Oklahoma, and it's also a business created out of necessity due to the transport needs of a large family; founder Tim had been building custom cars since the mid-80s, but when his sixth child was born in 1995, he needed a vehicle that could simultaneously carry a large number of passengers and tow a trailer. He decided to customize a Ford F-250 for this purpose, and the first six-door pickup by The Stretch Truck Company was born. Custom Autos by Tim does not exclusively work on Ford pickups; other brands, like Chevrolet and GMC, are also available as a six-door conversion.

Super Truck

Super Truck is a small company based in Georgia, and it sells a wide variety of new and used custom-built trucks, including a few 6-door truck options. With Super Truck, you have the option of selecting an already-built new or used truck from its inventory, or you can order a custom build for a more personal touch. The builder works with both Ford and International trucks: the main six-door conversion options are the Ford F650 or the International MV-Series truck.

Stretch My Truck

Stretch My Truck is based in Utah and specializes in both long-bed conversion and six-door conversions. The six-door conversion is available for Ford, Dodge, GM, and Toyota trucks, as well as the Ford Excursion SUV. Custom interiors are created using factory interior pieces to create a seamless interior that looks like it's rolled off the automaker's own factory production line. Stretch My Truck was created by founder Brian Wood when he wanted to venture into business with his own company after two decades of experience stretching trucks.

What Is The Average Cost of a 6-Door Truck?

One example of CABT's six-door builds, a Ford F350, was recently sold for $118,000.

The guide price for an Extreme F650 build with Super Truck starts at $197,845. For an International MV-Series, prices start at $196,687.

A six-door Ford F350 build by Stretch My Truck was recently sold for $85,000.

What Are The Pros of a 6-Door Truck?

• Large passenger capacity: six-door trucks are capable of carrying a large number of passengers while still retaining the storage space of a pickup.
• Not having to compromise: with a six-door truck, you can retain many of the advantages of driving a pickup while increasing passenger capacity. The perfect choice for growing families that don't want to switch to a minivan or three-row SUV.
• Towing abilities: one of the advantages of driving a truck is being able to tow a caravan, boat, or travel trailer during holidays. With a six-door truck, you can haul your gear and your passengers from A to B in a single vehicle.

What About The Cons?

• Size: six-door trucks won't fit into standard-sized parking spaces, and maneuvering in any kind of narrow space will be difficult.
• Price: being a personalized custom job, a six-door truck will always be more expensive than a standard vehicle from a dealership. It is worth evaluating whether it would be more convenient to run two separate vehicles before considering the purchase of a 6-door truck.
• Loss of capability: Because of their longer wheelbase, these trucks lose much of their breakover angle and maneuverability, resulting in poor off-road capability. They also can't tow as much, due to the curb weight forming a much greater part of the maximum GVWR .

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.
