There are no water sports activities on this beach however you can immerse yourself in swimming, canoeing, paddle boats, camping, or just unwind by relaxing and sunbathing at the beach. To add more to the experience indulge in lip-smacking shack food with some authentic local recipes. The beach is surely a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life and basks up in the lap of nature.

Gokarna Beach

Gokarna Beach

Of late the beach has gained popularity for being a surfing site. The not-so-clean beach is believed to give you a holy dip before you enter the Mahabaleshwara temple. If you walk a little away towards the River Gangavalli, the beach is pristine and less crowded. A heavenly paradise for adventure seekers and photography enthusiasts, Gokarna beach is popular for adventure activities like jet-skiing, snorkelling, surfing, banana boat ride, and trekking. For complete wellness and to explore yourself, one can indulge in a yoga session at the seashore. Gokarna beach is also the starting or the main point to start your trek to other scenic beaches within a radius of 10 km.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach

Another popular beach that can only be reached by a hike is Paradise beach. There is no road directly connecting to Paradise Beach. One of the most scenic and mesmerizing beaches in Gokarna is 150 mts in length and is 70 % covered with beautiful rocks. Paradise beach is surely a photographer’s delight. As the beach doesn’t offer any water sports activities, this is an ideal beach for those who want to spend time in tranquillity and in the lap of nature. Spend time gazing at the stars, eating the local delicacies, or just breathing and absorbing the calmness. Due to water currents, swimming is not advisable at Paradise Beach. Also do not venture out hiking back to the other beaches post-sunset, due to slippery and rough rocks. It could be just too risky. There are not many staying options at Paradise beach.

Other things to do in Gokarna

The beach town will surely take away all your time and there is less chance that you would want to do something else. However, this serene beach town is also a pilgrim’s paradise. The town also hosts some of the renowned temples visited by several devotees. You can also indulge in other activities like swimming in the sea, surfing, and yoga. Although there are vendors who claim to show dolphins in the area the chances of sightings are very less.

  • Mahabaleshvara Temple is one of the most visited and the biggest temple in town dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple dates back to the 4th century CE and is in the Dravidian style of architecture.
  • Maha Ganapati Temple is also known as the ‘Siddha Ganapati’ temple, as the name says is dedicated to lord Ganesha. Just a few yards away from the main Shiva temple. It’s a common practice to visit the Ganesha temple first and then move to the Siva temple.
  • Koti Tirtha Closer to the Mahabaleshwar temple, Koti Tirtha is the most visited place by tourists and pilgrims. A man-made water tank is believed to be the origin of many springs.
  • Mirjan Fort even if you are not interested in history, this 16th-century fort will surely mesmerize you. Just 22 km away from Gokarna the fort is believed to have belonged to a Portuguese queen named Pepper Queen who stayed in the fort for almost 50 years.
  • Surfing the clear blue water of Gokarna beach is an ideal place for surfing especially for beginners. There are a couple of agencies on the beach itself conducting classes for beginners.
  • Yoga classes, you can start your day or end it by enrolling in a rejuvenating yoga class with the beautiful beach and the sky in the backdrop. There are a couple of yoga schools conducting the session in different forms of yoga.
  • Visit during Shiva Ratri one of the biggest Lord Shiva festivals is Shivaratri, the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi got married. Tourists and devotees flock from all over the world to witness one of the grand celebrations of the country.
  • Yana Caves just 27 km away from the temple town, Yana caves are famous for adventure, wildlife, and religion. A paradise for trekkers, hikers, and adventure seekers, this is surely a photographer’s delight too.

Gokarna Beach in Karnataka: The Complete Guide

What to Know Before You Go

gokarna tourism

Gokarna is a small and remote holy town with four of India's most secluded beaches nestled nearby. It draws both pious pilgrims and hedonistic holidaymakers with equal enthusiasm. Travel to Gokarna to get a feel for what Goa was like in its heyday, although time is limited as developers are already seeing the potential of this area and commercialization is setting in. The secret is already out among tourists -- both foreign and domestic -- too. This Gokarna guide will help you plan your trip.

According to Hindu mythology, Gokarna's existence can be traced all the way back to the ancient epic The Ramayana, which tells the story of Lord Ram's life and rescue of his wife Sita from demon king Ravan. It's said that Lord Ganesh fooled Ravan into relinquishing the Atma Linga (the Soul of Lord Shiva that bestows immortality and invincibility) in Gokarna, while was he taking it to his kingdom in Sri Lanka. The Atma Linga is believed to be installed in the town's Mahabaleshwar temple. There's also a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh.

Gokarna is located on the coast of Karnataka, an hour south of the Goa border. It's about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from Bangalore, the state capital.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is Dabolim, in Goa. From there it's a four hour drive south to Gorkana. Alternatively, trains on the Konkan railway stop at Gokarna Road station, 15 minutes from town. There are railway stations at Kumta and Ankola, both about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from Gokarna, as well. Gokarna is also connected by bus from major cities such as Madgaon in Goa, and Mangalore and Bangalore in Karnataka.

Gokarna experiences the southwest monsoon from June to August, following which the weather becomes dry and sunny. The best time to visit Gokarna is from October until March, when the weather is warm and pleasant with temperatures averaging 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). April and May are hot summer months, and the temperature easily reaches 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) then. It becomes very humid too.

If you're interested in seeing a festival, aim to be there for Mahashivratri (the "Great Night of Lord Shiva") in February or early March. It's celebrated for nine days at Mahabaleshwar temple and concludes with a chariot procession carrying an idol of Lord Shiva through the streets. People throw bananas at the chariot for good luck.

Mahabaleshwar temple also holds rituals for Tripurakhya Deepotsava on Kartik Purnima (the auspicious full moon in November) and is beautifully illuminated with oil lamps.

What to Do There

Gokarna's main attraction is its beaches, where people come to chill and soak up the sun for months at a time. Travelers usually bypass the town's main beach (which is popular with pilgrims) and head a short distance south to Kudle and Om beaches.

Om is the most happening beach, as it can be conveniently reached by car or auto rickshaw. However, this means it draws plenty of domestic tourists and day trippers, especially on weekends. Unfortunately, the men don't always behave themselves. Those who want to escape the crowds prefer Kudle beach. Its secluded position down a hill between two cliffs means that it's less accessible.

Kudle has an international vibe during peak season. A hippie flea market often takes place in the evenings on the beach, followed by drumming and live music around a bonfire. That's about the extent of Gokarna's nightlife, as strict policing keeps it in check (two foreigners were arrested for allegedly organizing a rave party in February 2019). During the day, people do yoga and play games such as cricket, or hang out in a shack with a cold beer. Alcohol is officially banned due to the town's religious significance but you won't have a problem getting a cold beer on the beach.

There are two more smaller beaches -- Half Moon and Paradise -- further south of Om beach. Each requires a scenic 30 minute hike, or a short boat ride, to reach. Paradise Beach isn't much more than a tiny protected cove. It doesn't have amenities and the beach shacks are frequently torn down by the forest department, so people bring tents and camp.

It's possible to hike all the way along the cliff from Kudle beach to Paradise beach. Do wear proper footwear though because the terrain is rocky and steep in parts. Care should be taken when walking between the beaches at night in the dark, and it's best not to go alone.

Om beach has water sports. You can also go surfing and take lessons at Gokarna's main beach. Or, if you fancy, ride a camel along the sand. Read more about the top places to surf and get lessons in India. Strong currents make swimming dangerous in some areas, so do be careful.

It's worthwhile venturing into characterful Gokarna town. It's easy to explore this sleepy town on foot and fun to spot the colorful murals decorating the buildings that line its streets. Wandering around the lake and past innumerable small temples is also enjoyable. Do note that non-Hindus aren't allowed to enter the inner sanctum of Mahabaleshwar temple (the town's main temple), although they can go inside the temple complex. The chariots used in the Mahashivratri festival procession are parked nearby on the street next to the Ganesh temple. If you want to shop, you'll find the usual assortment of tourist stuff being sold in town, ranging from incense to hippie clothes.

Where to Eat and Drink

Namaste Cafe on Om beach is Gokarna's most iconic shack and it stays open during the monsoon season. However, people complain that standards have dropped in recent years. Expect a long wait to get a table and slow service during peak season.

On Kudle beach, the White Elephant and Little Paradise Inn are recommended.

Where to Stay

Gokarna town has plenty of hotels but they are characterless places. Instead, opt for a homestay such as Hari Priya Residency.

Vedic Village is an outstanding homestay in a newly constructed house with sea views, situated five minutes walk from town. Nimmu House is a popular budget option, with a wide variety of rooms in two wings, close to the town's beach.

Alternatively, find yourself a hut on the beach. Decent ones are no longer super cheap, as many places have upgraded to concrete structures with attached bathrooms. Prices skyrocket from December to February, when demand is high, Yet, it's much less costly than Goa! Om and Kudle beaches both have some permanent accommodations. If you want to book in advance, try pocket-friendly Paradise Holiday Cottages or Kudle Ocean Front Resort on Kudle Beach. Namaste Sanjeevini sprawls just above Kudle beach.

Nirvana Guest House is the best place to stay on Om beach. Namaste Cafe and nearby Shantidham Cafe also offer cottages that are popular. Beach accommodation can be difficult to come by in the peak months of December and January though. Many people are just happy with a hammock! If that idea doesn't appeal to you, make sure you turn up before noon to grab a room as people are checking out.

There are a few luxury resorts on the hillside, such as  Om Beach Resort , SwaSwara , Kudle Beach View Resort & Spa , and Kahani Paradise villa for those who prefer their comforts. Om Beach Resort has a traditional Ayurvedic center, while SwaSwara focuses on yoga and meditation.

For something different, check out Namaste Yoga Farm in the hills above Kudle beach. You can stay in a tree house there!

Alternatively, backpackers will be pleased to know that a few hostels have opened up at Gokarna. Zostel hostel was the first one there, in early 2016. It sits on a hilltop halfway between Gokarna town and Kudle beach, and the beach view is rather spectacular. It's an arty place with dorms, private wooden cottages, a common room, and a yummy restaurant. HosteLaVie occupies an enticing spot behind Kudle beach, while Trippr hostel is bang on a private beach.

What to Do Nearby

If you're up for an adventure and are feeling energetic, it's possible to hike south from Gokarna to Kumta in two days. This is known as the Golden Trail and it passes through many virgin beaches.

History lovers will be interested in visiting 16th century Mirjan Fort, about 30 minutes south of Gokarna alongside the Aghanashini River. "Pepper Queen" Chennabharadevi is thought to have constructed it and controlled the spice trade through it. There are wells, secret doors, interlinked tunnels, and a watch tower.

About 45 minutes inland from Mirjan, the towering black crystalline limestone rock formations in the Western Ghat mountains near Yana village are an offbeat attraction. A short forest trek is required to reach them.

Grasslands in Gokarna

You can go trekking amidst palm strewn cliffs, or just spend some peaceful time in retrospection in temples. Gokarna has something to offer for everyone.

This Gokarna travel blog contains information about some of the best places to visit in Gokarna for a 2-day itinerary along with some suggestions from my personal experiences which could help you in planning your own trip to this peaceful paradise.

Where is Gokarna?

Kudle Beach, one of the best places to visit in Gokarna

Gokarna is located in the southern state of Karnataka in the Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district. It’s a coastal town along the Arabian Sea almost near Goa’s border. There are several ways in which you could reach Gokarna.

How to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna has a railway station a little away from the town. Unfortunately it does not have very good connectivity with most cities and towns in India.

From Bangalore, there are few Karwar bound trains that stop at Gokarna on the way. Karwar is around 60km from Gokarna. Time taken is approximately 15-16 hours.

There are two trains which ply between Mumbai and Gokarna and the journey takes around 12 hours. The boarding station in Mumbai is Lokamanya Tilak Terminus.

There are plenty of trains running between Goa and Gokarna and the journey takes about an hour and a half. The boarding station is Margao.

From the station, you can hire an auto to your hotel/hostel or city. Although it could be a pain to find one during the offseason, especially during early morning hours. But during the peak season, you’ll almost never have any difficulties finding an auto. You can also find local buses running a little away from the station to the town.

There’s another station in Ankola which is around 20 km away from Gokarna. And this is the preferred choice for most travelers when a direct train is not available. From Ankola you can either travel to Gokarna by a local bus or by hiring an auto or cab.

The nearest airport to Gokarna is Goa’s Dabolim Airport . Another option is to fly to Mangalore Airport . From here you can come down to Gokarna by either a bus or train or by hiring a cab. Gokarna is 145 km from Dabolim Airport and it can take anywhere between 3 to 5 hours to reach depending on the mode of transport. From Mangalore, Gokarna is 250 km away and it takes around 4-5 hours to reach.

Gokarna has good road connectivity to the nearby cities. There are direct buses plying from Mangalore, Goa, and Bangalore at regular intervals. You could also hire a cab from Goa and Mangalore.

Bangalore is usually the most preferred option because it is well connected to Gokarna and buses can be easily booked from the KSRTC website.

Overall, the most convenient and budget-friendly option to travel to Gokarna is by road. If you choose to travel to Gokarna from Mangalore by road, you can also visit other places like Murudeshwar, Padubidri beach and Kasarkod beach (blue flag certified beaches) Apsarakonda, and Maravante on the way.

Getting Around in Gokarna

Although there are frequent local buses operating within the town, they mostly cater to the needs of the locals rather than of the travellers. It’s best to hire a two-wheeler or self-drive to this place as you’ll have the liberty of exploring the place at your own pace. There are quite a few rental shops in the town (E.g. Aparajitha Bike Rent) or you can just enquire at your hotel or hostel. There are also many places where you can rent a bicycle.

Another option would be to hire autos. There are many auto-stands especially near Kudle beach, Om beach and in the town centre. For a budget traveller though it can turn out to be slightly expensive as autos don’t operate by the meter. The rates are mostly fixed and decided by the union and it’s of no use haggling. But the auto drivers are more than willing to give you their number along with a ‘day package’ to travel around. It’s one of the best ways to explore Gokarna.

Best Time to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna is a year-long destination. Although peak monsoon season is considered to be the offseason. During monsoon season, the coast experiences relentless rains and it can be a hassle if you’re not fond of rains. Whereas if you love the monsoons with its cloud-covered landscapes, petrichor ladened air, lush greenery and deserted beaches then it is the perfect time to visit.

On the other hand, the peak summer season, March to May, can get unbearably hot and humid preventing you from exploring the town. So the perfect time would be during the winter months of October to February. Mind you, don’t expect the place to be too cold as it’s definitely going to be humid. Just a tad bit less as compared to other months.

But if you wish to do a staycation as is the case with most people’s post-pandemic travel plan, this can be a perfect place to unwind at a peaceful hotel, homestay, or resort. Better yet, find a place overlooking the sea and while your time away in complete silence and seclusion.

Sunset near Gokarna Beach

Ideal duration of stay in Gokarna

You can spend anywhere between two days to two weeks in this tranquil town. The ideal number of days to visit all the main places in the town would be 2-3 days. But if you wish to soak in the vibe, relax, unwind and also explore some of the pretty corners of this tranquil town, then I’d suggest adding one or two more days.

Best Places to Eat in Gokarna

There are multiple food joints available in the town and along the beach. Most of these places are affordable serving lip-smacking dishes.

  • Ganga Cafe & White Elephant Restaurant – Good food and beach view (best for Indian and Italian cuisine),
  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Great view and food (best for Indian and Chinese cuisine; try their chocolate pudding)
  • Mantra Cafe, Zostel – Great food and view
  • Prema Restaurant – Great Indian food
  • Namaste Cafe – Great beach view

Top 10 Things to do in Gokarna

It’s not always about ticking off bucket list things when you visit a place, is it? Sometimes it’s worth doing things that are not very mainstream in order to completely get a feel of a place. Here’s a list of things to do in Gokarna to have an immersive and memorable experience in this quaint town.

Cycling in Gokarna Countryside

Most people travel to Gokarna by train or public transport and hence follow a fixed path to reach their hotel and hostel. And immediately set out to check out all the noteworthy spots. While this is completely understandable if you’re short on time, I’d suggest to keep aside a day for leisure and explore the countryside of Gokarna if possible.

Narrow lanes cutting through pastel green rice fields, smooth asphalt roads passing through colorful houses with their sloping red-tiled roofs. Hidden mangrove filled backwaters with peaceful temples quietly sitting on their banks. You’ll come across all this and more when you go off the beaten track. Although any mode of transport will do, it’s best to explore it on a two-wheeler.

Interiors of Gokarna

Flea Market Shopping

Even if you’re someone who loves to shop in malls or popular stores and shops, there’s a different charm in buying a beautiful frock or funky jewellery for dirt cheap prices. Especially in charming sleepy towns tucked away from the rest world.

The town of Gokarna has several flea markets selling traditional colourful outfits, tropical indie-style beach garments, wooden carts covered with bracelets, local crafts, spices, and earrings made out of delicate shells and beads. So go on and splurge! And in turn, you’ll be contributing to the local economy! A win-win situation! 😉

Go for a Boat Ride

Picture this! The gentle hum of the boat’s motor, the constant swish of the waves beneath the boat. And the sun slowly sinking at the horizon. The vast orange blue expanse of the sea on one side and the coconut covered stretch of land on the other slowly blending into the sea. Can you think of a more relaxing experience?

You can take a boat ride from Om Beach to Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach. My suggestion would be to reach Half-Moon Beach or Paradise Beach by foot and then take a boat ride back from there to Om Beach.

You might also get to spot some dolphins on the way if you’re lucky!

Go Cafe Hopping

There is no dearth of cafes and eateries in Gokarna. You can find them lining the shores or high above the beach on a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the sea. Simple, quirky shacks and huts adding to the experience. What better way to spend a peaceful evening than gorging on delicious food and watching the waves crashing on the horizon.

Gokarna Backwaters

Watch Sunrise on the West Coast

Belekan Beach in Gokarna is one of those rare beaches on the west coast where you can watch the sunrise. The complete lack of commercialization of this beach makes it one of the best places to enjoy the early hour bliss. This is one of the best offbeat things to do in Gokarna

Belekan Beach- One of the lesser known beaches of Gokarna

Climb up a Lighthouse

Usually, no visit to a coastal destination is complete without paying a visit to at least one lighthouse. Sadly the one in Gokarna is not very popular and the way to it is also not very straightforward. But if you don’t mind a bit of an adventure. Gokarna Lighthouse is one of the best offbeat places to visit in Gokarna.

Tip: The starting point of the beach trek starts after crossing the stream. Walking straight ahead after crossing the stream takes you towards Paradise beach. Right before this point, there’s a path which forks upwards to the left which leads to the Lighthouse.

Gokarna Lighthouse- Lesser known but beautiful place to visit in Gokarna

Practice Yoga by the Sea.

There’s nothing more peaceful than practising yoga amidst nature. And what better place than by the sea? With your ears constantly filled with the melody of the chirping birds and the gentle crash of the waves, this is one of the best things to do in Gokarna. So just find your spot and zone in.

Watch Sunset on a Cliff

Gokarna and cliffs are synonymous with each other. If you can manage to drift away from the popular spots, you’ll see that there are several untouched nooks still waiting to be discovered. Viewing sunset from a cliff in Gokarna is a breathtaking experience.

Watching the golden orb slowly dip into the horizon high above a cliff while the white frothy waves crash below is an experience like no other. This is one of the best gifts you could give to yourself and one of the beautiful things to do in Gokarna.

Gokarna cliff

Camp by the Beach

If you’ve ever wished to camp by the beachside, Gokarna can be the best place to do it. While there are plenty of modest huts available for stay near the popular beaches of Gokarna, it’s an entirely different experience to camp on a beach.

The best beach to do this would be the Half-Moon beach. Its pristine golden sand with delightful clear water is just too beautiful and will instantly fill you with a sense of joy and calm. There are no facilities available here but the kind locals are forever willing to provide packed food, water and other basic necessities to the campers.

On the way to Half-Moon Beach

Do the Gokarna Beach Trek

This is hands down one of the best things to do in Gokarna. All the beaches in Gokarna are interlinked through short hikes. The joy of hiking along sloping cliffs covered with clusters of palm trees, discovering pretty nooks and crannies along a path through jungles and boulders is unparalleled.

The path is filled with the salt-scented fragrance of the sea, hidden viewpoints peeking out of clamps of bushes with gorgeous sweeping views of the thrashing sea below. It’s probably one of the most gorgeous trekking routes in India. The Gokarna Beach Trek is definitely one of the top things to do in this beach town. You can start the trek in any one of the beaches apart from Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach since they are accessible only by foot.

This is the recommended trail: Kudle Beach – Om Beach – Half-Moon Beach – Paradise beach – Belekan beach (or vice versa)

Although the best time to do the Gokarna Beach Trek would be immediately after the monsoons when there’d be an abundance of greenery everywhere, you can do it any time of the year. Be prepared to bear with the sweltering heat though. It’s advisable to go with a local guide or in a group as in few areas the trail is not properly marked and there’s a possibility of getting lost. And at all cost do not venture on the trail alone after sunset.

Hiking between the beaches in Gokarna

Note : If you’re not interested in trekking you can do beach hopping in boats operated by local fishermen. This is mostly operational during the peak season and sometimes when good weather conditions prevail during the off-season.

Several water activities are also available during this time. There’s a ferry line operating between Belekan and Kumta. You can use this ferry to visit a few of the other nearby beaches like Nirvana and Heaven.

Places to Stay in Gokarna

Whether you prefer to stay in the town centre with easy road accessibility or you want to reach out to your gypsy roots and spend a night under the stars, there’s something for everyone in Gokarna.

Here’s a list of some of the best stays

  • Zostel – The goto option for backpackers and budget travellers. And their recently introduced individual cottages make it a great choice even for other tourists. The affordable dorms, great views of the sea, and their in-house cafe serving delicious food have definitely made it a popular choice among everyone.
  • Viraz Valley – Sitting atop a cliff amidst a forest overlooking the sea, this is one of the most affordable and great stays in Gokarna. Easily accessible through a lane which forks off from the main road, it is located at a short distance from Om Beach and Kudle Beach. They have an in-house restaurant and a terrace with great views of the beach.
  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Located amidst a small jungle within walking distance to Kudle beach, this is a great place to unwind if you’re looking for some peace and luxury. Their restaurant, located on the top floor overlooking Kudle Beach is an amazing place to watch the sunset from. The chefs whip up delicious food and this is one of the best places to visit in Gokarna to indulge in some lip-smacking food along with breathtaking views.

This is definitely not a complete list as there are several other stay options in the main town and many other newly emerged resorts and hotels interspersed throughout the town. While you can definitely expect to find a stay throughout the year, do look out for the seasonal crowd which throngs Gokarna during certain religious months. During this time if you happen to reach without prior booking, it might turn out to be slightly inconvenient.

Kudle Beach faces west and hence it’s the ideal place to watch the sunset from. It’s around 6 km from Gokarna town. There are some water activities to indulge in as well. Many cafes and shacks are lined along its shore as well as on the cliff above. From Kudle Beach there is a well-paved path towards Om beach passing under a canopy of trees. However, if you opt to travel during the summers it can turn out to be very hot due to humidity. There are also motorboats ferrying between Kudle Beach and Om Beach. The beach is accessible after a 10-minute hike downhill from the parking area. Definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Gokarna and you should include this in the list of things to do in Gokarna

Om Beach- One of the best places to visit in Gokarna

The most popular beach in Gokarna. It owes its name to its two crescent-shaped shores which form the shape of Om. Several shacks and cafes line its shore including the popular Namaste Cafe. There are many water activities like banana boat rides, surfing, and parasailing for you to indulge in as well.

It’s south-facing hence sunset views are not that great from this beach. A long stretch of beige-coloured sand with several places to dine and unwind. Kudle beach and Om beach is pretty close to each other and you can definitely include this in your list of things to do in Gokarna In order to get a perfect view of its shape, you’ll have to walk towards the rightmost corner up a small hill.

During the peak season, there are frequent boats operating to Paradise Beach. Although it’s best to trek to Paradise Beach, those not wishing to trek can opt for this.

Half-Moon Beach

Shaped like a perfect half-moon this beach is tucked in between jungles and boulders and is accessible only by a short hike from Om Beach. At the far end of the beach, there are a couple of shacks here serving limited food but the beach is a pretty one. Especially peaceful if you happen to visit it during the offseason. A perfect place to perch on the pile of rocks by the beach, sip a drink and watch the sun go down.

You can even stay here for a few days by setting up your own tents. Many people have started opting for this and in order to have the beach all to yourself, it’s better to choose a weekday rather than a weekend.

There’s also a trail which starts somewhere along the main road which is mentioned in Google Maps. The trail between Om beach and Half moon beach is the most picturesque one passing through jagged cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea.

Note : If you plan to go back by boat then be mindful of the boat timings And if you plan to trek back to Om beach ensure you carry a torch with you and do not trek alone as it can be risky to climb the cliff during late night. You can get your tents and spend the night here under the stars. But ensure to take all your belongings and trash back with you!

Sunset on a cliff

Paradise Beach

South facing scenic beach with no shacks or eateries. Peaceful and secluded, it’s perfect for some soul time and relaxation and one of the secret beaches in Gokarna. You’ll have to put in some effort to reach here though. And that’s the reason it’s still pristine and untouched. It’s a rocky beach hence be careful if you wish to swim here.

You can reach Paradise beach in Gokarna by a small hike through life-sized shrubs and thickets from the Belekan Beach. This route is comparatively less popular as compared to the hike from Om Beach and Half-Moon Beach.

Practice yoga by a peaceful corner or simply perch on a pile of rocks and stare at the dipping sun when the sky catches fire.

Belekan Beach

Belekan Beach

Located in Belekan village in Gokarna this place is nothing short of enchanting. It’s not possible to watch the sunrise from the west coast of India but this is one of those very rare places where this phenomenon occurs. This should definitely be in your list of places to visit in Gokarna.

Gokarna Beach

Gokarna beach

The Gokarna Beach is a popular beach stretching for miles below a cliff mostly frequented by local tourists and pilgrims. It’s usually extremely crowded and can be given a miss if you’re in search of peace and calm. However, it’s one of the best places to visit in Gokarna if you want a glimpse of the local culture. It’s not an uncommon sight to spot a priest, a backpacker and a cow walking towards the beach on the same side of the road! You can reach Gokarna Beach by auto or you can also choose to hike to it from Kudle Beach.

Lesser Known Places to Visit in Gokarna

Mallikarjuna temple.

Mallikarjuna Temple

Situated along Ashokavana Road, this beautiful temple is a piece of architecture . Snuggly sitting in the middle of an areca nut plantation, this place oozes serenity . With the constant gurgling sound of a stream nearby, the chirping of birds and insects, this is one of the magical places to visit in Gokarna for some quiet and peaceful time.

The place is devoid of any people except for a few days of festivities when the place gets crowded with devotees. It can be slightly difficult to find this place. It has an entrance which is mostly gated in order to prevent cows from entering the premises. However, it is mentioned in Google Maps.

Shiva Cave Gokarna

Shiva Cave

Sitting amidst a sea of boulders in a picturesque location, Shiva Cave is an interesting place to visit if you’re into exploring offbeat hidden places. If your timing is right, you can listen to some exciting stories from some saints and devotees who often use this cave as a resting place. They’ll regale you with their interesting tales about the history and significance of this cave.

The legend goes by the story that this cave was made by a cow captured by Ravana while escaping from his grasp. It is also believed that there’s a secret tunnel in the cave which leads to Varanasi. Irrespective of whether you believe in Mahabharata or not, these stories certainly have a different charm while you listen to them standing there and try to visualize everything. The surrounding area has a peaceful vibe about it and you can spend some quiet time sitting among the boulders.

Travel Tip: Look for a ‘Shiva Cave’ board opposite Kudle Beach View Resort from where the path starts

Jatayu Tirtha

Jatayu Tirtha

A cliff tucked in between Gokarna beach and Kudle beach this is a heavenly place for watching the sunset along with some breathtaking views of the sea and the rocks below. It’s not very popular yet since it takes some effort to reach here and only a handful of people manage to stumble across it. You can reach this place either from Kudle beachside or from a path near Rama Tirtha temple.

You can also hike down to the rocky shore below where a small stream flows to the sea. This is considered to be the place where Jatayu from Ramayana was slain by Ravana.

A gradual slope leads down to the turquoise water sheathed in soft white foam. I stumbled upon this gem of a place by chance and was blown away by its beauty. White frothy waves crashed on the rocks below, with absolutely no one around. Just the sound of waves, breeze and the smell of sea and sunset.

Rama Tirtha

Rama tirtha Temple

A peaceful temple located just off the shore near Gokarna Beach. There’s a pond near the temple filled with mountain water. The water, flowing out of an opening (carved in the shape of Nandi’s head) in the mountain is believed to have medicinal properties with a unique taste. And people from all over the world bring bottles to fill it with the sacred water.

An Obscure Carving

Carving near Rama Tirtha temple

Just behind the Rama Tirtha temple, there’s a small courtyard from where you can watch the sunset from. There’s also a barely visible path hiding among the bushes which leads to a gorgeous viewpoint. There above you can spot this art carved out of the boulders. You can also hike up to it.

Gokarna Lighthouse

On the way to Gokarna Lighthouse

Not many people know this but right before the path that leads to Paradise beach, there is a path which forks upwards towards the left which leads to the lighthouse. The route is filled with wide variety of flora and founa and the constant sound of the waves along with the chirping of the birds can be very therauptic.

This is another ancient temple located next door to the Mahabaleshwar temple. This temple is dedicated to Bal Ganesha who is said to have saved Atma Linga from Ravana by tricking him. According to customs, it is advised to worship Lord Ganesha before the Atma Linga in the Mahabaleshwara temple. Head over here to experience and witness the daily worship.

There are many places of interest around Gokarna that can be visited on a day trip. You can either a hire a cab or an auto or avail a public transportation to reach these places. Here are some places close to Gokarna that you absolutely cannot afford to overlook when in Gokarna.

Apsarakonda

This is a beautiful beach village hiding in plain sight near Honnavar. The beach sees almost no visitors apart from few locals and is one of the cleanest beaches I’ve come across. There’s a lovely garden with a variety of flowers and a viewpoint from where you can get a panaromic view of the sparkling beach below.

There’s also a waterfall here which is a pretty sight during the monsoon but not much of a beauty during the other seasons.

Apsarakonda Garden

Mirjan Fort

Mirjan Fort is an architectural beauty located at a distance of about 12 km from Gokarna town. Situated on the banks of the river Aghanasini, Mirjan Fort built, by Queen Chennabharadevi of the Tuluva-Saluva Clan, in the 16th century glorifies the rich heritage and history of Karnataka.

One can reach this fort by hiring an auto from Gokarna. Alternatively, you can hop on to a local Kumta bound bus which will drop you on the main road from where it’s a 500 mt walk to the fort. During the peak season you can also expect to find some autos parked near the mouth of the road leading to the fort.

Mirjan Fort

Murudeshwar

There’s a tall Gopuram towering over the statue from where you can get sweeping views of the beach and statue. The entire temple complex has beautiful intricate carvings depicting stories from the Mahabharata.

There are several places to visit in Murudeshwar along with activities like boating, swimming, beach surfing and other water sports in Murudeshwar Beach. Ravana was stopped here for his evening prayers while going back to Lanka. He had been instructed by Lord Shiva not to keep the Atmalinga on the ground, since it would be fixed wherever it touched the ground. Atmalinga was a powerful weapon and devatas did not want Ravana to get such a powerful weapon, fearing destruction. Lord Ganesh took the avatar of a boy and offered Ravana to hold the Atmalinga during his prayer. Ganesha then kept the linga on the ground before Ravana comes back from prayer. Ravana, in extreme anger, tried to pull out the Atmalinga from the ground, breaking it in the process. These pieces then resulted in the establishment of various temples in Karnataka. The name of the town Gokarna is derived from two words, Go and Karna, which means cow's ear. According to mythology, Lord Shiva appeared from a cow's ear, after he was sent to Patal Lok by Lord Brahma. Some believe that the town is located at the confluence of two rivers Aganashini and Gangavali, and the place where the rivers converge forms a shape that is similar to the ear of a cow, hence the name Gokarna. Gokarna is a city located in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka , and is etymologically translated to ‘cow’s ear.’ According to popular mythological belief, it is the place where Lord Shiva emerged from the incarnation of Mother Earth in the form of a cow. Interspersed with ancient temples, the town is home to one of the oldest temples since time immemorial known as Mahabaleshwar, enshrined with Lord Shiva. The town is about 59 km from Karwar, 483 km from Bengaluru, and 238 km from Mangalore. Furthermore, the rustic outlook of the town has attracted the attention of a lot of travelers and foreigners. There are several beaches, pilgrimage sights, and waterfalls that are reverberating tourist attractions. In fact, the town is situated around the River Aghanashini, which is considered to be deemed and sacred site for devotees. However, due to the recent tourist influx, the town attracts both adrenaline seekers and those looking for spiritual solace. It is the town of golden beaches named after the way they are shaped like Om Beach and Half Moon Beach. Paradise Beach does no injustice to its name! The tall palm trees, serene waves of the ocean gushing towards the rocks, and the evenings spent watching the sun melting into the ocean add a surrealistic appeal to the place. Apart from beaches, there is the Mahabaleshwar Temple that attracts many devotees and saints. Yana is another dainty town located in the vicinity of Gokarna, whose lavish surroundings and rocky terrain is perfect for activities like cycling and trekking. Mountaineering is another popular sport. The serene beaches pose as perfect sites for watersport activities like surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, and jet skiing. If you want to indulge in watersport activities, then the best time to visit the place is post-monsoon, from September to December. Winters in Gokarna are flamboyant, with a mildly cold climate and lush green surroundings. Summers in Gokarna are hot and humid, followed by the showers that cool the surroundings down with heavy rainfall.

Gokarna is a small pilgrimage town on the coast in the Karnataka state of India . It's a conservative Hindu pilgrimage town, home to several temples and festivals. The town is full of locals and pilgrims, and doesn't have much in the way of facilities for tourists, other than a handful of guesthouses and local restaurants.

Understand [ edit ]

gokarna tourism

Gokarna means cow's ear in Sanskrit. One of the Hindu epics states that "aatmalimga" of the God Shiva is in the shape of a cow's ear in the Mahabaleshwar temple and the town gains its name as Gokarna.

The town is mostly centred around the KSRTC bus stand. About a kilometre from the bus-stand, the Gokarna beach starts, forming the coast of the town. As you trudge along the narrow lanes of the town towards the beach (the lane is named 'Samudra Marg'), you will come across houses of priests where some religious talk will be going on or people invoking the Holy Lord with chants.

Most foreign tourists come to stay on one of the 4 beaches just south of town. Kudlee Beach is the first, about a 20-minute walk, followed by Om Beach, Half Moon Beach and the secluded Paradise Beach - the beaches get more remote and less populated as you head south.

The most popular time to visit Gokarna is during the 4-day Shiva Ratri festival, when 2 giant chariots are pulled down the main street and up to 20,000 pilgrims descend on the town.

By train [ edit ].

Gokarna is connected by rail through Karwar , Ankola , Hubli , Mangalore , Kumta and Margao . The Konkan Railway and many other trains pass through Gokarna - Kumta (35 km) and Ankola (20 km) are the nearest major railway stations.

Gokarna Road (GOK) is the station nearest to the town itself, on the Konkan Railway. Train No. 16513/14 Bangalore City- Karwar Express (4 days a week) & 16523/24 Bangalore City- Karwar (Triweekly) Express have at halt at Gokarna Road, along with Mathsyagandha Express (Daily) (Mangalore Central to Mumbai Lokamanya Tilak Terminus) , Marusagar Express (Weekly) (Ernakulam Junction to Ajmer ) & Poorna Express (Weekly) (Pune to Ernakulam) Connections to Gokarna town (8 km away) are available by

There are regular government buses going from both Kumta and Ankola to Gokarna for about ₹10-15.

From Gokarna bus stand, the bus stop to get off is Madangeri junction.

By bus [ edit ]

From Bangalore, depending on the day of travel, there are anywhere from 1-4 buses operated by KSRTC. It is a 12-hour overnight journey from Bangalore to Gokarna. The experience taking the overnight sleeper was described as "being driven in a bouncy castle driven by the wicked witch of the west" - beware.

Private buses also operate from Hampi/Hospet. You can book online tickets to Gokarna from any one of the operators' websites. National highway 17 is about 9 km from the town. From Badami, the cheapest option is to take NWKRTC buses to Hubli, Ankola and Gokarna (9 hours, possible in one day).

The Bangalore - Goa highway passes through Ankola which is 20 km from the town. Coming down to Kumta is a good option because one can easily catch buses to different places (especially Mangalore) as it is well connected.

If arriving from Goa, you can take a local bus from Madgaon or Canacona to Karwar , then catch another bus to Gokarna. There is a regular (every 30 minutes or so) NWKRTC bus service between Gokarna and Ankola.

From Mumbai, there are bus services of NWKRTC to Karwar. There is also a private bus service of Canara Pinto which drops off at Gokarna on its way to Mangalore. But the drop will be at Madangeri junction adjacent to a Petrol Pump and from here it is 12 km to Gokarna Mahableshwar temple.

There are buses from Bellekan village to Gokarna.

From Gokarna you can get a ticket at the numerous travel agencies in town, and the bus will depart from Cheack (SIC) Post, five minutes walk from the bus stand, on the wider part of Gokarna Road.

By plane [ edit ]

The nearest airport is in Goa at Dabolim ( GOI  IATA ). (Rail link via Margao)

Get around [ edit ]

Map

On foot [ edit ]

The most common way to get around, as the town is small and compact. Getting to the beaches is best on foot, although there are some rickshaw and boat services described below.

By bike [ edit ]

Also a convenient way to get around Gokarna. Bicycle rentals are available.

See [ edit ]

  • The Maha Ganapati Temple is meters away from the Shiva Temple and made in honour of Lord Ganesha having played a hand in taking the Atma Linga from Ravana. It is common protocol to first visit the Ganapati Temple & then move to the Shiva Temple.
  • The Mahabaleshvara Temple is one of the largest in town, at the western end towards the beach.

Do [ edit ]

Festivals [ edit ].

  • Visit during Shiva Ratri (Feb-Mar) festival. The celebrations are a tremendous sight to watch as thousands of pilgrims descend on the town.

Beaches [ edit ]

gokarna tourism

Visit one of the four beautiful beaches to the south. The beaches are pretty clean, but ask locally about swimming , as the currents can be very strong. Accommodation in huts or shacks and food are available always on all the beaches from ₹100 (basic bamboo hut on Kudle beach with mosquito net and electricity, outside shower and toilet) to ₹500-1500 (small cottage-type house with all necessary amenities on Om Beach) per night in the peak season. Om beach, due to its popularity, tends to be a bit more expensive. Same as Kudle, it has several restaurants that call themselves cafés on this beach. Enjoy the sea, sunlight, beer by sitting in any of the cafés near the beach.

Don't fall for the dolphin sight-seeing gimmick from the speed boat vendor. All you get is a 10-min ride and a distant glimpse of something in the water that might be a dolphin.

  • 14.52839 74.315635 2 Kudle Beach ( pronounced Kudlee ) ( The first beach you come to. About a 20-minute walk south from Gokarna main beach. ). Kudle Beach is popular with those that are staying in town but want to spend the day at the beach. At the southern end of Gokarna beach, a narrow path goes up a hill, where you cross a Rama temple en route. This temple also has a natural water spring which according to the locals never stops running. The water is quite drinkable. After climbing up some stairs, you will find flat ground and some breath-taking views of Gokarna beach as you turn-around to see the distance you covered. As you move along, about 10 minutes walk from this place, the flat ground (a cricket field) leads to a narrow lane, which goes down to Kudle beach, the second of Gokarna's beaches. This beach looks very unkempt, desolate and dirty in off-seasons. You will hardly find a soul here then. But come season time between November - February, this beach will be dotted with hippies. Very few Indians are sighted on this beach, and mostly day trippers. Sunset-Cafe, on Kudle beach, is heaven if you are lazy and like to dig yourself into a rice pudding (and doze off in between). • 14.519256 74.322628 3 Om Beach ( 20 minutes walk south from Kudle Beach. ). The most famous of the beaches, it's popular with those wanting to stay a few days or weeks and stare at the sea or play Frisbee, like young Israelis travelling on the Hummus trail. Om beach is so named because the shape is like that of the Hindu religious symbol "Om". Om Beach is about one kilometre from the main Gokarna town and fully approachable by road, unlike Kudle. It is possible to get to Om beach by taxi or rickshaw (₹200-250 after a bit of bargaining) and the price is not unreasonable, the road winds around the hills and is much longer than the coastal walking trail. Out of the 5 beaches, only Gokarna and Om Beach are approachable by road. This usually means there are more Indian folks on the beach. For the other 3 beaches including Kudle, hiking or taking a boat ride are the two ways. At the southern end of Kudle Beach, a small meandering path leads up the hill and you come onto a well-laid pitched road. For the non-adventurous folks, a walk down this road will lead to the main road, which is about 500 m from Om beach. For the more adventurous, instead of taking the pitched road, you can go straight and walk across the small trees for around 15 minutes and directly get down at the starting point of Om Beach. Simply follow the white arrows outlined on the rocks, or look for the well used rocks. Rickshaw drivers parked near Om Beach tend to quote higher prices to go to town; bargain, and if this does not work, walk along the road, you'll certainly encounter some rickshaw who'll be happy to get you to town for the proper fare. Rickshaw from Gokarna town is ₹200 . ( updated Jan 2023 )

To get to the beaches beyond Om ( Half-moon and Paradise ) generally you have to walk from Om. This is not advisable during the monsoon as the walk is quite treacherous. In high season, however, during daytime there are boats cruising between the beaches and picking up the passengers. Usual price for a "shared" boat ride is ₹100 (₹150 for a more remote ride, say from Kudle to Paradise), but you have to wait until there will be several people going roughly in the same direction. You can also "charter" a boat (this can cost you say ₹400 for a return trip to Paradise beach with a one-hour stop there), or can be asked if you want to pay more (₹200 or ₹250) if there are not enough passengers but you do not want to wait.

  • 14.518005 74.331141 4 Half-moon Beach ( 20 minutes walk south from Om Beach. ). At the southern end of Om Beach, there is a path going up the hill. Here one has to get around a hillock (about 20-minutes walk) to reach Half-Moon Beach. Take this trail, and when you reach a fork in the trail, take a right for the coast route, and left for the forest route. They will both take you to the same place. Half-moon beach is so named because the shape resembles that of a half-moon. During season, the path is pretty well laid out. But at start of season, look out for thorns in the bushes. They hurt! In between one can take a diversion and take some rest below a palm tree on the edge of a cliff, from where one can try to catch a glimpse of the horizon. There will be many zig-zags, but make sure that you get around the hill rather than unnecessarily climb up the hill. Once you get down to Half-moon Beach, you can see the pure beauty of this beach. During season, a couple of shacks operate on this beach. There is no electric power on this beach. Hence it is totally cut off from civilization. During off-season, you might be the sole inhabitant of this beach without any shacks operational. The rooms on this beach are pretty basic. They set you back by around ₹250 per night in peak season time. ( updated Jan 2023 )
  • 14.518193 74.337449 5 Paradise Beach ( Full-moon beach ) ( 20 minutes walk south from Half-moon Beach. ). At the southern end of the Half-moon Beach, a small trail leads to Paradise Beach, also known as Full-moon Beach. The thing to remember here is after crossing the first set of rocks, you should not try to climb the hill. Rather try getting around it. Its a much easier climb. The steep climb up the hill will take you to the next village, Bellekan. This is the last of the Gokarna beaches. Pretty much isolated from the crowd, Paradise, the name suits this beach well. It's an absolute paradise! It's a very rocky beach, with sand in between. Waves are very strong, and it is quite dangerous to go out very far into the sea. There are a few shacks selling pineapples, water and sweets, as well as one restaurant. Rooms on this beach are basically huts on the hillock or tents at the beach. Boat fee from Gokarna ₹150-175, from Om ₹100 . ( updated Jan 2023 )

Buy [ edit ]

The small shops in the town sell religious items, psychedelic T-shirts and clothes for cheap. Trance music CDs and if you spin fire, (cotton) pois are available as well.

Malas (prayer beads), incense, cheap jewellery and religious paraphernalia are sold in dozens of stalls along the main road and gathered around temple entrances.

Eat [ edit ]

  • There are a handful of local restaurants and dhabas in the town proper (including a couple of good options at the end of the main road where it hits Gokarna Beach).
  • Excellent local restaurants on the right just before the arch that leads into the main street. Incredibly cheap all-you-can-eat thalis, just don't drink the regular water though; buy yourself some bottled water. Street food is good, particularly the little fried pies and bhel puri. Fish (pomfret, kingfish, seer being the popular ones) is served fried, roasted or curried; as you like it.
  • All the beaches have basic accommodation and beach shacks (in season) serving food and drink.
  • In Namaste cafe at Om beach you can get Mexican, Israeli, Indian food, and delicious sea food like Prawn Masala and King Fish Sizzler. Some Nepali people also run a really good restaurant from a straw and bamboo hut on Kudlee beach.
  • Shree Shakti Cold Drinks and Restaurant , Car Street Main Road. ( Temple Road ), ☏ +91 8386 257836 . An old restaurant running for thirty years. Famous for Indian dishes and ice cream, fruit juice, and lassies. Fresh and tasty.
  • Pai hotel ( Temple Road. About 1km from Shiva Temple ). Great Leaf Idli. Excellent Upma. A decent thaali for dinner. Do not confuse the hotel with Pai Restaurant.
  • Pritish Love Cafe ( Temple Mount Road. About 1 km from Shailendra Temple ).

Drink [ edit ]

  • Fresh coconuts are widely available as are delicious lassis .
  • You may be able to find beer (around ₹240 for Kingfisher) at any of the guesthouse restaurants on Om Beach. Some have harder liquor that you would have to ask for, since it's not legal for the restaurants to sell harder alcohol.
  • There is a wine shop selling all sort of liquor right outside the bus stand in the main town.
  • Green Bar and Restaurant, next to the bus stand, has a wine shop on the ground floor and an eating & drinking area on the first floor balcony. There's no barman to mix drinks for you. When you order your liquor, the waiter will simply get the bottle for you and then it's up to you how you fix your drinks. The restaurant is run by couple of very enthusiastic boys from Nepal.

Sleep [ edit ]

Respect [ edit ]

Gokarna is a pilgrimage town first and foremost, so it's best to keep this in mind - remain quiet and respectful of local traditions, ask permission (and remove your footwear) before entering any of the temples, and if you must consume alcohol here, do it on the premises of your guesthouse (if you're staying at one of the beaches), not in town.

Anyone carrying Cannabis should be particularly careful. It is common to see Sadhus sitting in a haze of ganja smoke, but don't assume that it's OK for you to do it too. Locals will report you to the police if they see you doing it or smell it about you and the police will treat you politely but firmly and won't accept baksheesh particularly during Shiva Ratri. Expect a term in jail with absolutely no sympathy from your consular officials. There seems to be an "agreement" with the police and the restaurants, however, not to hassle the locals. Use caution at all times, of course.

Go next [ edit ]

There are several other temples near Gokarna. Murudeshwara Temple , dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a 45-min to 1-hour drive from Gokarna.

  • Karwar — An easy day trip by train, bus or taxi since it is merely 55km away; however, there aren't too many direct buses. Ask at the Gokarna bus station. Direct buses at 7:30 & 10:30AM. The better way to go is to go to Ankola and then take another bus to Karwar from there. You can also take the KR-2 train from the Gokarna Road train station. The station is around 9 km outside Gokarna town. Auto rickshaws charge something between ₹100-130 for the trip. The train journey between Gokarna & Karwar is around 45 min. You may not get a seat as the train is in the last leg of its journey. The fare is ₹9. The train is scheduled to arrive at Gokarna Road at around 10:20AM but is often late by an hour or so.

Where is Gokarna?

Gokarna - a gorgeous beach destination in Karnataka

Gokarna is a pretty beach town in Karnataka, located by the Arabian Sea. It is around 140 km from Goa which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The town is at the confluence of the Gangavali and Agnashini rivers and it is this delta that is shaped like the cow’s ear. If one were to look for a more logical reason for the name Gokarna – then you have just stumbled upon it. The town is surrounded by loft hills that literally lock each of the sandy beaches of Gokarna – creating a very peaceful and secluded shore experience – quite unlike the beaches of Goa.

History of Gokarna | The Gokarna Story

The Gokarna story goes back to the mythological tale of Ramayana. The demon king Ravana of Lanka came to India to get an Atma linga from Lord Shiva for his mother. He did severe penance and pleased by his efforts, Lord Shiva gave him the Atma linga to take back to Lanka. But that came with “ big conditions apply ” 🙂 . Lord Shiva clearly instructed him to walk with the linga and never leave it on the ground. Not even for a few seconds. He warned him that once it touched the ground, it would not be possible to dislodge it. And so, the mighty King of Lanka walked back home.

In the meanwhile, the other Gods appealed to Lord Vishnu to help them stop Ravana. They feared that with the Atma Linga, he would become unstoppable and even more fearsome. Lord Vishnu hatched a devious plan with Lord Ganesha to stop Ravana. It was known that Ravana was very religious in praying at dusk. And so, he used his celestial weapon – the Sudarshan chakra to hide the sun and create an image of the sun setting. Ravana fell prey to that and looked around for help to hold the Atma linga while he performed his evening pooja. Enter Lord Ganesha in the form of an innocent cowherd.

Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna - the place that is central to the Gokarna story

Ravana appealed to the young cowherd to hold onto the linga while he finished his prayers. The cowherd aka Lord Ganesha in disguise agreed but with one condition that he would call out to Ravana thrice if he wanted to leave. As you might have guessed, Lord Ganesha tricked him, called him thrice while he was performing the pooja and very deliberately dropped the linga to run off. At the same time, Lord Vishnu cleared the sky and Ravana realized he had been tricked.

True to Lord Shiva’s words, the Atma linga got embedded in the same place while the cows began to disappear. Ravana tried to stop one of the cows by holding onto the ear but failed. The earpiece remained to become the confluence of the two rivers and the Atma Linga now resides in a temple that naturally, is one of the key Gokarna attractions.

That is the epic Gokarna story that draws numerous Hindus to this town. In the later years, some of the beaches were used as trading ports by royalties like Tipu Sultan. You can, in fact, get a glimpse of these shores in the next section on the best places to visit in Gokarna.

What to do in Gokarna? | Best things to do in Gokarna

Gokarna is often referred to as the offbeat cousin of Goa. While there are plenty of similar experiences to Goa, it also, is uniquely different from it. For one, it is definitely less crowded and not so touristy which makes it easy for any traveler to feel relaxed. The plethora of Gokarna attractions ensure that your day is filled with fun and excitement – but at the same time, the place allows you to pace these out. Here is a complete list of things that you can consider when planning your own Gokarna itinerary.

1) Beach Trekking in Gokarna

Beach hopping sounds like the most obvious? Am sure. But there is a slight difference here as you really have to trek (not walk) to the beaches in Gokarna. Gokarna is situated amongst the hills and the beaches are literally enclosed by the jutting cliffs. There is no option but to actually climb and descend these hilly rocks to go from one beach to another – which is actually, where the fun and excitement lies.

There are two major beach trekking routes in Gokarna. The first one called the Gokarna beach trek is a 10 km trail that covers the five major beaches in this town. These include Gokarna beach, Kudle beach, OM beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise beach. The 2nd one is a shorter trail that takes you from a slightly lesser known beach – Belakan beach to the Tadadi Lighthouse. The trail takes you past the Agnashini river to the Arabian sea.

Gokarna beach trek

Gokarna beach trekking - one of the best things to do in Gokarna Karnataka

Of these, the most popular in the list of things to do in Gokarna for solo travelers is the Gokarna beach trek. For one, it is quite easy and light for all trekkers. And the 2nd reason is that the trail is not very secluded – making it safe for solo trekkers. It is a great way to explore the key beaches of Gokarna. You can even stop at each of the beaches and enjoy the various activities that are available there.

Another advantage of this route is that you do not have to walk both ways. If you are tired or want to try something different, you can opt for a boat ride to all these beaches as well. :-). Boat rides are available on Kudle beach as well as OM beach and you can either choose to go with a crowd or hire one exclusively for yourself.

Here are the key beaches of Gokarna that you can explore through the Gokarna beach trekking route.

Gokarna beach

Gokarna Beach is in the main town and is quite popular amongst the locals and the pilgrims. Shivratri is one of the main festivals celebrated in this town and the celebrations are held on this beach. The beach is not preferred by tourists. A nice beach nonetheless. However, I would recommend beginning your trek with the next beach – Kudle Beach, which is one of the main tourist beaches in this town.

Kudle beach – one of the most popular beaches of Gokarna

Kudle Beach - one of the key places to visit in Gokarna

Circled by hillocks and dotted with rocks, Kudle beach is a pleasure to spend time on. The beach has a lot of shacks and small inns. You can trek up the little rocks along the way and feel the waves splash onto your toes. Not a bad idea to perch on them and stare out of the sea. I totally enjoyed doing the same myself. Trust me, it is a calming sensation 🙂

OM Beach - one of the key Gokarna attractions

From the Kudle Beach, you have to trek up a hill and descend down to the most popular beach in Gokarna – OM beach. Named after the serene “OM” symbol of the Hindus, this is not just popular with the tourists but also, amongst the locals. This beach has limited food and restaurant options. This is where you will find numerous water sports activities.

Half Moon Beach

Half Moon beach of Gokarna

Next beach in the line of the trekking order is the Half Moon beach. The beach feels a little like a lagoon. This has far lesser options of restaurant and shacks and is quite secluded. It is in fact, one of the most peaceful beaches in this stretch – especially since it does not have much to do

Paradise beach

Paradise beach spotted during the cruise

The last beach in the beach trekking route of Gokarna is the Paradise beach. Also, called the Full Moon beach, this is the furthest from the main town. It is quite popular with campers and foreign tourists. In fact, at one point, any one was allowed to pitch a camp and stay here but in the recent years, the camp sites have become commercial and you will in fact, have to rent one from the operators here.

Paradise beach is a great place for people who like water sports, especially kayaking. You can end your Gokarna beach trek here and spend some time enjoying the shacks. From here, you can even hire the ferry I mentioned and get back to one of the more popular beaches like Kudle beach or Gokarna beach. You don’t have to hike back all the way.

Belekan beach to Tadadi Lighthouse trek

Tadadi lighthouse spotted during the Gokarna sunset cruise

The Tadadi lighthouse trek is a comparatively shorter trail that begins at Belekan beach and takes you past a lovely lighthouse. The route is known for its hill-top views. In fact, you can get onto this trail from the Gokarna beach trek itself. Belakan beach, also, referred to as God’s own beach, is accessible from Paradise beach. The only thing that you need to keep in mind is that from Paradise beach to Belakan beach, there is no ferry. Hence, you will have to walk back on your own.

2) Visit the famous Gokarna Temples

Originally a temple town, there are a few ancient temples around Gokarna with a fair amount of history and significance. The key amongst these places to visit in Gokarna is the Mahabaleshwara temple, within the main Gokarna town. This temple is home to the legendary Atma linga which gave Gokarna its name. Built in a typical Dravidian style, the temple has a pedestle with a hole through which the devotees can see the top of the Atma Linga.

Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple

Visiting this temple gives you a very serene feeling. The deity here is over 1500 years old. While you are at visiting temples, you can even visit a few others – Aadi Gokarneshwara temple, Ganapati temple, Koti teertha etc. All these are within distance from each other and are connected to each other – either by way of rituals or legends.

For example, the Ganapati temple in Gokarna was built at the spot where Lord Ganesha vanished after setting the Atma Linga down on the ground. The Ganesha idol here has a hole, which is believed to be the hurt that he got when Ravana tried to stop him and ended up giving him a blow. The Koti Teertha temple is actually a pond that is used by disciples to cleanse themselves before entering the Mahabeleshwar temple in Gokarna.

3) Relax with a massage

Most of the hotels and resorts as well as inns on the beaches offer you massage services. The most popular are the Kerala Ayurvedic treatments. You can opt of a regular full body massage or go specific based on your preferences. From a head massage to a foot massage, these massage centers have quite a few options on their menu. A very soothing experience. especially with the waves giving your a background music score 🙂

4) Become a Foodie

With the shacks on the beaches and good local restaurants, the foodie in your is bound to spring out. From Italian pastas to Indian Thaalis – these food places serve your the best. Don’t miss out on two places in particular – the first being in the main Gokarna town called Prema restaurant. This is a non-descript place, with a shabby looking board. Initially, I mistook it for a store but don’t go by the looks. The menu here completely defies its appearance – It has everything from Israeli bread to Pastas and Indian Thalis. The food here is absolutely mouth-watering and AMAZING. So much so, that we ended up going here on two of the 3 days in Gokarna. You have to try out the homemade icecreams and GADBAD here. Check out the Trip Advisor reviews here.

View From Namaste Cafe

The other must-visit place is by the OM beach – Namaste Cafe. This place has an amazing view of the Arabian sea. The food here is a mix of Italian and Indian. Personally, I felt that the food was much better and tastier at Prema Restaurant but there is no beating the ambiance of this place.  I would recommend an evening here for sure, as the place is beautifully lit and while you wine and dine here, you can hear the vibrant sea in the background and feel the sea mist on your face.

Incidentally, staying and dining at the Namaste Cafe is one of the key things to do in Gokarna for a solo traveler.

5) Embark on a few day trips from Gokarna

The Giant Shiva statue at Murudeshwar

There are plenty of places close to Gokarna, each unique in its own way. These places can be covered as day trips from Gokarna. I have shared a few of these in earlier post and you can look up those details in the links added to those destinations.

  • Karwar – While you can do a day trip to Karwar from Gokarna, I would highly recommend a stay there. However, if time is of essence, then you can head there in the morning, explore the lovely Mangrove beaches around River Kali, spend some time on Kurumgad island or just enjoy the Devbagh beach.
  • Yana – This is a delight for trekkers with its fascinating rocks and caves. The landscapes here are unique and definitely worth a visit. Yana is just 45 km from Gokarna
  • Dandeli – River Rafting in Dandeli is an activity that a lot of visitors add to their Gokarna trip. You can book your expedition in Gokarna itself or just head over to Dandeli, which is around 130 km from Gokarna.
  • Murudeshwar – Just 55 km from Gokarna is the 2nd largest statue of Shiva. Murudeshwar is worth a visit for the sheer magnificence of this statue that stands against the blue backdrop of the Arabian Sea. You can also, plan a Scuba diving expedition when in Murudeshwar. Netrani Island – just off its coast, has more than 6 amazing dive sites to explore the underwater. In fact, you can enroll for a PADI certification here. Check out my own experience through this post on my PADI certification at Netrani Island
  • Mirjan – This is just 11 km from Gokarna and worth a visit for the lovely fort. The mighty fort was built in the 16th century and has plenty of interesting structures to explore.

6) Yoga by the Beach

yoga g52ccb1226 1920

Do it by yourself or join the groups at various resorts like the Namaste Yoga Farm or the Swarswara resort. It is not unusual to see a lot of tourists practicing yoga in the mornings and evenings on the Kudle beach or the OM beach. You can pick from a 7 day course to a longer course while here.

7) Experience the Star-Studded Sky

The night sky in Gokarna is actually wonderful -clear and star-studded. With the cool breeze blowing on your face, waves splashing along and lovely sand below your feet, a stroll on the beach are exactly what you should do. Try lying down on the beach and counting the stars – Sometimes, meaningless tasks like this add to the charm of the place 🙂

8) Indulge in some water sports in Gokarna

Get your adrenaline going with some watersports on the Gokarna beaches. You can opt for some parasailing, banana boat rides, snorkeling or kayaking. However, note that these are available only during the peak season.

You can also, enroll yourself for some surfing classes that take place on Gokarna beach. You can choose from a variety of courses that are available in this surf schoo l.

Me after my PADI Certification at Netrani Island - a year later from my first scuba dive at Havelock

Scuba diving is yet another option that you should consider when looking at water sports in Gokarna. However, for this option, you will have to travel to Murudeshwar, which is just 45 minutes away from Gokarna. All the scuba diving schools and shops in Gokarna will take you there.

9) Get bitten by a photo bug

Arabian Sea from Kudle Beach, Gokarna

Gokarna Beaches are quite unusual with their rocky surfaces and hillocks. They look really stunning in the evening and morning light and this should contract a shutterbug in you. Take a stroll along with your camera or phone and try to capture the lovely landscape in front of you. Try your hand on catching the waves on the rocks. You can get some pretty beach picture s if you have your GoPro handy.

10) Shopping in Gokarna

Street View, Gokarna

Gokarna is a small town and you can literally walk and cover the entire town. You will find pretty little trinkets and bright clothes catching your fancy all the way to the Gokarna beaches. I would definitely not say no to the vibrant and colorful bags being sold in this Gokarna flea market. You can spend a little time just walking around and getting a feel of this small sleepy town.

11) Experience the stunning Gokarna Sunset with an evening cruise.

Sunset cruise Gokarna - a sensorial experience

A recent visit introduced me to a different vantage point for the lovely Gokarna sunsets. This one takes you right in the middle of the Arabian sea. With misty sprays on your face, you can experience the magic of those golden rays as they slowly fade away into the water. What is more is that you get to see the beaches of Gokarna from a very different angle. And yes, you might even meet those friendly dolphins. Check out this post on the Sunset Cruise in Gokarna . It has all the details about the experience, including the price.

12) Discover the salt fields of Sanikatta

Sanikatta salt fields in Gokarna

This is another discovery that I made enroute to Tadadi port (the place where the Gokarna Sunset cruise begins). The vast expanse of brown salt fields – a traditional industry of Uttara Karnataka is bound to leave you spellbound. If you are lucky, you can catch some of the villagers working here and get a tour of the fields.

Gokarna itinerary for 3 days

Assuming you have 3 days in Gokarna, here is how you could make the best use of them. This sample itinerary allows you enough time to cover the major Gokarna attractions but is not loaded to get you tired. Depending on your interest, you will be able to modify it easily. Take a look

Well, you see, you have enough time to chillax, grab a drink over a stunning sunset and gaze into infinity. Gokarna is that kind of place where you can do lots and yet do nothing. With that I am sure you are all set to bookmark this post for your next holiday. So go on – pin this up.

Travel and Photography Tips

  • There are lots of stray dogs on the beaches. Though they are harmless, one can always be a little careful.
  • Be a little careful when stepping out in the evening on the beaches. You will see a lot of tourist smoking and drinking. There is a bit of a hippie culture in some parts of Gokarna.
  • Carry enough Sun Screen while here.
  • Most of the Gokarna beaches are rocky and there are no safe zones marked for swimming. One needs to be careful while getting into the water. Ideally, use the help of the locals to understand the water conditions there.
  • A Go-Pro along with your regular camera is ideal. The Go Pro with its waterproof properties works really well for those beach shots. What is more is that it doubles up a good wide angle lens.

A beach and a small town nearby (like Udupi) make a perfect combination.

Seems like a wonderful place.. Thanks for sharing 🙂

wow! what a lovely place… the Shivji statue is mesmerising… 🙂

Absolutely. Udupi is also a good example of this. Have you been to Malpe and Kapu beaches? Different from Gokarna but beautiful nonetheless.

Thanks Anjali

planning to visit end of November with my GF, need to know more about the place

Hi Lokesh, hopefully my post here has given you the required information. Have a good time

It is, isn't it? And especially coz it has a huge blue background 🙂

Lovely post Ami! And great pics as well…

Such a lovely collection of pictures. Once again a place i have read about so much but never been there!

Thanks Siddharth 🙂

Amiazing description. Tempted to make another trip.

Thanks Mridula. Plan a trip and we can go together 🙂

Happy to go again Ashwin 🙂

How safe is Gokarna for a solo woman traveller? What would you recommend .. Kudle or om beach?

I have seen a lot of solo woman travelers to Gokarna and would say that the place is fairly safe. Though make sure you don't loiter out in the night as the beaches are quite secluded. Also, try to pick a good and safe place to say. Om beach as well as Kudle are equally good. Om beach is a little more populated as compared to Kudle. You can opt to stay at Om beach for the same reason. Have a good trip!

OK…I'm leaning towards Gokarna now… Although it sounds a little too tranquil for my son's taste!! Thanks! Great content as usual!

Hello! Can I use information and photos from your article to post it on my web site? It will be translated into Russian. This is my site omcoach.ru Thanks in advance for your permission!

🙂 Thanks . Have a good time

email: [email protected]

Hi Saeem…happy to help. Check your email for the same.

Thank You very much for the E-mail. If possible could you please share any contacts for stay/shacks there.

Hi Ami .. Your piece of blog added to my excitement for the place 🙂 .. M planning a trip but need some contacts to book some budget place .. Incase you can , please inbox me [email protected] m planning for the Christmas weeknd thanks

Hey Leena…thanks a ton for the compliments. Have a great time at Gokarna. On contacts for a place, well, am afraid the places I know of are completely booked. Hopefully you will something . Ping in and let me know how you liked Gokarna after your visit.

I can only imagine that a cab ride from Goa all the way there is expensive. Gokarna seems much more modern-local touristy than most other places that get highlighted about India. Thanks for sharing!

It is definitely a lot more serene and fun than the other places that are publicized. Getting here from Goa will not be too expensive. You can even opt to take one of those tourist buses or a train from Goa. 😀

Hi Ami, I went through your blog as i am planning to travel Gokarna this week. Very amused to visit this place after reading out your blog, one of the best one i can say after going to various blogs. Thanks for posting this. I am planning for a getaway to Gokarna, can you please share some contact details for stay and things that we can do in and around Gokarna.

Please inbox me at [email protected] . Waiting for your reply, Thanks.

Thank you Arjun. Will be sharing a mail with you shortly.

Please Let me know is it okay to visit in June month ?

Absolutely. It will be a bit hot but the beaches will be as lovely as ever.

This looks like the type of place I would like. A little off the beaten track, good food, good scenery and yoga. This is also an engaging post with lots of links.

So beautiful, of course you get bitten by the photo bug in such a beautiful place!! I must say, the combination of scenery, beach, yoga and food is very hard to beat….

Thanks Gearoid. This is quite an under-rated but beautiful destination

Thanks Marta. This is a place I plan to frequent alright. 😀

This is a really great guide.

Thank you Jessica

Have driven past but not stayed here (my drive from Goa to Hoonavar to Bangalore)! Seems like a destination worth visiting!

We love this place, been there a couple of times, always want to go back.

Oh , you must stop by then. And spend some time here with your camera. You will so love it

Oh no, another place for my to add to my bucket list! Thanks for sharing.

Awesome list! Sounds like there are lots of activities to keep any type of traveler happy!

And definitely worthwhile adding it 😀

Precisely why I so love this place.

Looks like a really beautiful area and this post gives some great insights in it. Great list of sightseeings!

Thanks guys, hoping you have been inspired enough to visit it

Looks like a beautiful place to visit! The beaches look great! Great list of things to do!

Amazing pictures!! This looks like a place I should add to my list 🙂

This looks like a little piece of paradise!!

It is a place that I would love to go to again.

It sure is…love the feeling here

Definitely worth the visit. And totally recommend adding it to your list.

Beautiful! I love the large Shiva statue! It reminds me of the big Buddha in Hong Kong. What is the largest statue in India?

This is on my bucket list – and your photos look amazing. I roadtripped through Kerala in South India, but I would like to go back to visit the places on your list.

Will be honest and tell you,,…I don't know. I have heard of a Shiva statue in Rajasthan but I guess I need to google this one

And am sure you will love it too 😀

Lovely and simple description. Thank you.

Thank you Pratima

Looking forward to visit the place in this month. Can suggest me some budget stays. Pls mail me to [email protected]

Thanks Arjun for dropping by. The ones that I know of are mentioned in the post. 🙂

I have heard of Gokarna, but never been to this place. From your beautiful post and wonderful pictures it seemed to be a serene quiet place, not much visited. I would love to see it soon. 🙂

Thank you Sarmistha. I think you will love it.

Wow! Looks like an amazing place! It is definitely on my bucket list now! And you write in a very interesting way! Love it! Prerna https://www.vivalahighstreet.com

Thank you Prerna. It is a lovely place

I love a good small town that’s walkable. Those are always a lovely time. You mentioned that it was different from Goa. I’ve never been to Goa – is it more crowded?

Goa is quite well developed as a tourist beach, especially North Goa. A few of the beaches are really crowded. Also, because it is so popular, there is a lot of fan fare and events and shacks here. Gokarna is fairly quite and peaceful.

I love beaches, love to visit anywhere soon, !!

They sure are amazing

Waw! The beaches there look stunning!!

An amazing place to spend a peaceful weekend. Water sport can bring adventure, though. Amazing clicks and coverage, Ami.

Thank you Saru :D. Water sports is so much fun

Stunning photos. Looks like a great place to visit. I particularly like that photo of the pale pink mandir. So lovely.

Gokarna is a beautiful place. Unspoilt and lovely

Its one of my most beloved destinations with amazing memories!

Glad to know that and am sure it is a destination that you will want to return to. Thanks for stopping by.

We are planning to visit gokarna for this new year. We went to goa last year, that was incredible. But I’m afraid is that gokarna worth for new year celebration. Actually we are 10 members from chennai. Please any one provide me the details. I will mention the question below. 1. Do I need to book the hotel or resort before?(Resort would be better for us) 2. Is there any fun activities there? 3. What are the water games there? 4. Things to do in gokarna(We all are batchelors) obviously no temple 🙂 5. Your suggestion Please reply me through my E-mail: [email protected]

Glad you are heading to Gokarna Vivek. I think most of your questions are answered in the blog itself. Cheers

One place I have missed is Gorkana. So glad to see this article Ami.Hoping to visit soon and do the same:) http://www.photokatha.in

Thanks Rutavi. Gokarna is amazing

Lovely post; my last visit to Gokarna was in the monsoons and this write up rekindled so many memories! Thanks 🙂

Thanks Shubham. Gokarna is just amazing in any season.

Pity I had been there during my analog days. Not a single good pic I have from that trip. I need to create a trip there soon. Great reasons mentioned.

Thanks Indrani. Gokarna is the new Goa.

Dats beautifully explained Amy … Thnx . M planning to visit in dis mnth end … Cud u guide me with some contact of stay options dere . Thnx . Mailid : [email protected]

Thanks Rishabh. My suggestions are already in the article and have links attached to it. Have a look.

Lovely reading your blog post and the pictures are beautifully weaved. Gokarna is one of the best destination for pilgrimage lovers who enjoy being at beach. Gokarna is known for its endless rows of coconut palms, blue seas and clean beaches.

Thanks. Gokarna is an unexplored wonder!

Awesome place

I am immediately going to chalk out my plans for Gokarna visit. I always thought it as a very pilgrimage type destination where the Purohits would bother you into unnecessary rituals or temple visits..like what happens in some other parts of India..how wrong I was! Just realized after reading your post

Gokarna is an amazing beach destination. A different experience from Goa but beautiful nonetheless. Hope you get there soon.

I just got to this amazing site not long ago, There are many things I can know only after reading your wonderful article. Planning to visit Gokarna very soon..Thank you

Thank you Madhu. Have a good trip

Thank you, Ami

Hey! Ami, We are friends of 4 members had been to Gokarna om- beach and Kudle beach on 26th January and we stayed Kudle Ocean Front resort for one day, It was again one of the most enjoyed moment of my life.

Glad you enjoyed Gokarna..the place itself creates some amazing memories.

I’ve never heard of Gokarna but it looks great in your pictures. I love walking and beaches, so I’m sure I’d like the beach trek. And I would love to eat those Thalis!

Thanks. Gokarna is a gorgeous beach destination that not many know of as yet. I am sure you will love it. Do plan a trip here when you come to India.

Ah so that’s why trekking is not the same as walking– ’cause it’s a big harder to get to the beach. I think I’d like Gokarna because more locals go there. I like to people watch locals hehe.

ooh yes and you will love it even more for its un-crowded beautiful beaches.

what a serene and picturesque travel destination!

It sure is Ishita. A lovely destination

CAN I REACH HERE BY TRAIN FROM GOA

Yes, there are plenty of trains from Gokarna to Goa. 🙂

Hi ami,my son aged 20 is visiting gokarna with his friends. Would appreciate if you can let me know what safety measure they shud take……what NOT to do. Thanx

I understand your concern Nidhi. I would say that they should not go overboard with whatever they do. As long as they follow the regular safety standards, I don’t see a reason to worry. Yes, the beaches here are rocky and hence, would urge people to be careful if they choose to swim here. There are no markers of depth here, so exercise caution. Ideally, stick to the public beaches like OM beach or Kudle beach or Gokarna beach for any kind of swim activity. Trust that would help. Cheers

Hey Ami, I m planning to come to Gokarna on 7 of April I request u to guide me nd mail me on my I’d [email protected]

Hi Vinay, My suggestions are as in this post. I am afraid that these are the only options that I have evaluated!

Hi, i am shivani i want to visit gokarna badly but this time i am travelling alone. So i wanted to know is it safe? Hotels and everything keeping my safety purpose in mind. Please mail me at : [email protected]

There are plenty of solo backpackers in Gokarna. As like any other place, ensure that you have your cautions in place.

One of the best blogs I have ever seen. Thank you for this blog admin. It’s been honor to learn blogging skills from this blog. I have personally visited gokarna, it is most beautiful and untouched.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

I’ve never heard of Gokarna in India before, but it definitely looks really nice from your photos! Also doing yoga by the beach seems exactly like the kind of thing I’d love to do. Saving this now for my future trip to India!

It is an offbeat beach in India but a beautiful one. Hope you get to it soon.

Wow..what a great article. I am awaiting to read some more articles from you. I never went out of Bangalore but this article made me to imagine how beautiful Gokarna will be.

Thanks Naveen, plenty up. Stay tuned.

lovely post…im going on a solo trip to gokarna.would really like to know how safe is it for girls ??n dos n donts regarding the same…is the water sports n adventurous activities nice thr?

Thank you Medha. It is pretty safe and the water sports are fun. Just don’t venture out late in the night – as I caution that to everyone these days. Cheers

very good post Ami….i am planning a solo backpacking trip to gokarna this month end.. i am from kerala… will there be adequate accomodation available near the places mentioned here at shoe string budget. if yes can you give suggest places….

Thank you Earnest. Given you are looking at the month end, not sure if you will find availability. Gokarna is popular during New Years. Also, the places that I can recommend are already on the post. Trust that should help

Gokarna does look like the kind of place to relax, stare at the sea and count the stars. The little town is cute charming and the beaches look great too. Where did you stay?

It sure is a charming place. Stayed at Kudle beach resort 😀

Hi Ami, The experience which you shared is very pleasing. I just planning to visit their in the next month for 3 days. So can you please help me with Stay, things to carry, total Budget of money for the trip and etc….., to my mail. Thanks in Advance. Mail:- [email protected]

Good to know Ramana that you are headed here. As far as the suggestions you have requested, most of it is pretty much what I advised on the post. On things to carry – don’t forget your sunscreen for sure. The rest of course, would be your own personal list. Total Budget would depend again on you and your itinerary. Hope that helps. Have a great time in Gokarna.

Amazing post. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. Glad you liked it

Hi Ami! First of all thanks for the amazing article. It really helped and has made me even more excited to visit the place. I am a college student basically looking for a peaceful getaway with my friends. Just wanted to ask if Goakarna would be the perfect spot for chilling with a drink in one hand and a joint in another?

Not sure of that for I don’t indulge in either, especially the latter. Gokarna has vibe that I would not like to spoil and hence, would not encourage the joint for sure. It is best enjoyed the way it is.

Love this blog. Very Interesting.

Ami, I have never been to Gokarna but I am simply impressed with their beaches. I especially like the Half Moon beach because it is so isolated and remote and I am guessing that’s the case because of the tough trek to it. I would love to trek through the rough paths, through those hills to get to these amazing beaches! Trying the variety of cuisines, getting a relaxing massage or visiting one of those temples with such a majestic setting, are some of the things I’d love to spend time doing. Thanks for this extensive guide!

Thanks Medha. Gokarna is a very different kind of place with unique beaches. It has some of Goa’s vibes but is a lot of Kerala as well. You will love it.

Hi Ami, You are doing great service by sharing your experiences, much of which fill in the pits and black holes in planning visits to places less known. I am escorting two old ladies (my mom and my MIL) almost 80 yrs of age, tricky with keeping balance and cant push them with more than a 100 ft climb for a day. It is a challenge to work out stay, meals and visits to “temples” only, as is the case with many at this age. I am looking at 10 Jun 2018 check-in by evening/late evening and check out on 13th Jun 2018. I will stick with Airbnb as I have many credits to make my stay good. There is however some doubts still out there in the planning. I will be happy to hear from you your mind on the following: 1. Whether to stay at Gokarna or some distance away from Gokarna? 2. Would this time of the year be safe for elder citizens to visit especially when there are heavy rains forecasted? 3. How much time would you recommend for covering as many temples and places of interest at and around Gokarna? Look forward to your opinion please? Regards

It does get quite wet there and yes, it is a mountainous area. Hence, there are risks. In terms of the stay, at least 2 – 3 days for so. And Staying in Gokarna is preferable if temples are your objective

Amazing article. I want to go to Gokarna after reading your article!

I hope you do. It is a lovely place.

its very good to see, that you are helping others to visit good palaces. i am planning to visit Murudeshwar & Gokarna on 09th 10th & 11th July 2018, can you plz help me is it good time to visit or not.

Thanks Mahendranath. Hopefully there will not be too much rain. All the best to you

Wow !! Wonderful information about Gokarna

Thanks for sharing. I’m solo woman traveller and planning to visit here. Can u please recommend places to stay. And do I need to rent a bike to see around. How many days can be spent here?

YOu do not really need a bike here as the distances are short. Gokarna can be good for 2 days or even a week. It is just idyllic. 🙂

Oh my gosh, I am SUCH a foodie that Prema immediately caught my interest. I’ve never had Israeli bread (and would love to try it) but Indian Thalis are one of my favorite things – I love all the little dishes and various tastes! (No wonder you came back to this place several times.) I am also always on the look out for photo opportunities when I travel, so this puts Gokarna high on my list as well. Truly enjoyed learning the legendary Gokarna story. Fascinating!

Thank you so much Jackie. I have a feeling that once you visit Gokarna, you will want to come back again!

Gokarna looks like my kind of a place. Haven’t been there yet but would certainly love to. I just love the thought of a beach, shacks, the food, sunset, treks, shopping and complete relaxation. Scuba Diving is a good opportunity on the third day. Mahabaleshwar Temple & visiting the Salt fields in Sanikatta sound interesting as well.

I am pretty sure from what you are saying that Gokarna is a place that you will want to stay for a long time

Reading your blog, I realize that one day in Gokarna was absolutely not enough. There are so many other places to see, and I really like the three day itinerary you provided in your blog. I am intrigued by the story of the demon king Ravana and his Atma Linga. I just visited the Kudley beach when I was there, and spent some time at Om beach as well. I think the Paradise beach and the Half Moon beach are also very pretty. Also I visited Murudeswara on the way. Your blog brought back my memories.

Ah, time to get back here Shreya. I am sure you will enjoy Gokarna the 2nd time around

Gokarna sounds like such an idyllic place to visit. As I don’t like touristy places, I would probably choose Gokarna over the super popular Goa. I like that there are plenty of things to do here and that the beaches look so beautiful and different from each other. It’s good to know that Om Beach has limited food options but definitely not miss Namaste Cafe with that beautiful view.

Thanks Joanna, Om beach is being developed a little more now and you will get some more options for food soon!

Thank you for sharing a bit of history. It made me appreciate Gokarna. Happy to know that there are many things you can do in Gokarna. I would love to explore the Gokarna Temples.

Yes indeed, the history of the place is what makes it so much more interesting. Hope you can visit soon

What a beautiful place. The story from the history of this place makes it so much more exotic and interesting to visit. I would love to explore all of those beaches. I have been to several amazing beaches that require a little trek but I think that just adds on the experience. Gokarna Temples is also a place I would definitely like to see.

If you enjoy culture and history, then you will definitely love the temples and the legends around them. I hope you can see them in person

Gokarna is a beautiful tourist spot to explore and definitely a alternative to Goa if you’re looking for a beach to own. The legend associated with the name “Gokarna” is fascinating and how the river delta created by the two rivers is also shaped like a cow’s ear, after which it’s named. I would love to go beach trekking in Gokarna, besides visiting the famous Gokarna Mahabaleshwar temple where the auspicious Atmalinga is embodied and venerated. The sea side food shacks look tempting for the variety of food served and also the Gokarna sunset cruise and the brown salt flats of Sanikatta are must visit.I would definitely love to visit Gokarna.

Sounds like you already like Gokarna. I hope you are booking your tickets here .

Gokarna does look like a lovely alternative to Goa. Those beach views would be a huge draw for us when we want a break from seeing the beautiful architecture in India. It might take us several days to check out all the interesting beach spots. And we would certainly want to check out the scuba diving! Always great to know there are some fun day trips if we want to get away.

Gokarna has a very calm and relaxing vibe and it is perfect to get that little breather from the heavy architecture and stories that you might have experienced on your India tour. I hope you add it to your itinerary and visit soon

I still haven’t visited Gokarna! I should really plan a trip there. So, thanks for this guide. I have read the story behind Gokarna of Ravana. Good to know there’s still very less light pollution at Gokarna and you can still see the stars. Didn’t realize Dandeli is close to Gokarna. That would a good trip together.

I am pretty sure you will find it lovely and different from the eastern beaches.

Thank you so much

The Ultimate 3-Day Gokarna Itinerary (With Prices)

Are you planning a 3-day trip to Gokarna? Gokarna is a small town situated on the coast of Karnataka, famous for its beaches and temples. I have been visiting Gokarna since 2017 and this was my fifth trip to Gokarna. Yes, that’s how much I like this place, and can never get bored of it.

In the 3-day itinerary, I mention some of the best places to visit in Gokarna , where to stay, and the best places to eat. Is this the only 3-day itinerary you have to follow? Not really, this itinerary gives you a good experience of Gokarna visiting all the beaches via the beach trek, visiting the waterfalls and some of the best temples of Karnataka!

Don’t worry, I have also shared alternative 3-day itineraries at the end of this blog for all types of travelers. Gokarna can be visited on a budget . I have shared a breakdown of the cost at the end.

Table of Contents

How to reach Gokarna

Reaching Gokarna is relatively easy whether traveling by air, train, or road.

How to reach Gokarna by air

The nearest airport to reach Gokarna is the Dabolim International Airport (Goa). It takes another three hours to reach Gokarna from the airport as it’s approximately 150 km away. Since the Goa airport is well connected to other parts of the world, it makes reaching Gokarna easier.

How to reach Gokarna by Train

The Gokarna railway station is 10 km away from the main town. Trains from several cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Madgaon (Goa) halt at the station every day. Gokarna Road Railway Station code is GOK and you can find all the details about the train below:

All the trains from Mumbai and Pune also go via Goa(Madgaon)

For trains from other destinations, please check the IRCTC website .

How to reach Gokarna by Bus

The easiest and budget-friendly way to get to Gokarna is by bus. You’ll find direct buses from nearby cities like Mangalore and Bangalore, as well as from farther places like Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai. It takes 8-12 hours, depending on the location you are traveling from. Since I was traveling from Bangalore, it took me 9-10 hours to reach Gokarna town. You can find all the bus details on Redbus .

Since all the buses reach in the early morning no matter the destination you are coming from, this Gokarna 3-day trip itinerary can be easily followed by everyone.

The best time to visit Gokarna

Gokarna is a coastal town and thus the best time to visit Gokarna is from October to March as there is little to no rainfall. If you want to beat the crowd, you should visit from April to June. But do know that it gets really hot. Monsoon is not a great time to visit if you want to experience the beaches, but one should not miss the waterfalls nearby like the Jog Falls or Vibhuti Falls.

Places to stay in Gokarna

View of Gokarna beach from Zostel

While there are many budget options for a stay in Gokarna, I loved my stay at both Trippr and Zostel. While Trippr is a little far from the main town and situated on the middle beach, it has the best beachfront views. The middle beach still hasn’t gotten crowded, thus making it a great option for a stay.

Book your stay at Trippr at no extra cost using this link: Trippr Backpacker Hostel & Zostel

Zostel , on the other hand, offers incredible views of Gokarna Beach and is an excellent spot to connect with fellow travelers. The property is stunning, and don’t forget to enjoy the cafe’s scenic views and delicious food.

Other great budget options are staying on the shacks on the Kudle Beach for which you’ll have to go there and check!

So let’s get started with my 3-day trip plan to Gokarna, starting from Bangalore.

Day 0: Taking the bus from Bangalore to Gokarna

I started from Bangalore, taking the bus from Anand Rao Circle. It takes close to 8-9 hours to reach Gokarna. The bus dropped me off early in the morning by 7 a.m., and I had booked the stay in Trippr, which is 2.5 km from the main bus stand. Now the confusion is, should I pay for the auto to go to the hostel and then come back or rent a scooter straightaway? I chose the latter because why not save some money?

Where to rent the scooter in Gokarna

While searching for scooter rentals online, I found many operators providing them. Based on the highest Google rating, I decided to choose We Gokarna Bike Rental. The bikes provided by Gagan Anna were almost new and in very good condition. I rented the scooter for two days to cover some amazing spots near Gokarna.

Scooty Cost : ₹400/day on weekdays and ₹500/day on weekends

Scooty Rentals Company in Gokarna : We Gokarna Scooty Rental

You also need to submit a govt ID, which will be returned when you return the scooty. The “We Gokarna shop” is very close to where the bus will drop you off. The shop usually opens at 7 am, and even if the shop is not open, you can call Gagan Anna and go to his house to pick up the scooties.

One more important thing you need to note is there is only one petrol pump in Gokarna.

Location : Indian Oil Petrol Pump

Staying at Trippr Hostel on the Middle Beach

After renting the scooter, I directly headed to Trippr Hostel to check in. Since it was still early, I enjoyed sitting by the beach. After my check-in, I refreshed quickly and was on my way to the first spot, the Yana caves! But before that, some breakfast.

Before heading to Yana Caves, I made a stop in town to have breakfast at my favorite place, “ Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen ”. If you want to try some authentic South Indian food in Gokarna, this has to be your go-to place. After having a nice masala dosa and coffee, I started again towards Yana Caves.

Visiting the mysterious Yana Caves

Mysteriosu Yana Caves

Yana caves are approximately 50 km from Gokarna town, and it will take you close to 1 hour 30 mins to reach there. Take the route that also has Vibhoothti Falls on the way. There are two ways to reach Yana caves, which I didn’t know until I reached there. The first one is you can drive to the Yana caves parking from where the caves are just five minutes away

The second route involves hiking for 2-3hrs.

Yana Caves are famous for their special rock formations that took thousands of years to form naturally. The main attractions here are two huge limestone rocks called Bhairaveshwara Shikara and Mohini Shikara. These caves are considered holy by Hindus and are visited by pilgrims. Read more about the Mythology of Yana Caves here .

There is also a small temple at the entry of the caves, and you can also go under and around the caves. The caves do have a bad smell because of the bats living there. You can spend a good 30-45 minutes exploring the caves before heading to relax at the Vibhhooti Falls.

Swim under the Vibhoothi Falls

Vibhoothi Falls near Gokarna

Vibhoothi Falls is just a 30-minute drive from Yana Caves. I parked my scooty in the parking and then walked towards the waterfalls. The waterfall is inside the forest and is an easy 10-minute walk from the parking. Once you reach the waterfall, you can see it cascade down from a height of 25 feet.

Since the waterfall is inside the forest, there are very few spots that receive the sunlight, making the water super cold and refreshing. The water is continuously flowing, which makes it a great spot for swimming. Don’t forget to get your swimming clothes.

You can also jump in the pool of water, but be very careful as it can be dangerous. If you don’t know how to swim and want to get near the waterfall, there is a shop renting life jackets.

Vibhoothi Falls Parking Fees : ₹10

After spending a good one hour near the waterfall, I was starting to feel hungry again as it was already 3 p.m.

Sunset at the middle beach

Beautiful Sunset at Middle Beach

After reaching back from the waterfall I immediately went to Bhagvan Cafe , which is located in the middle beach and just a 5-minute walk from Trippr. They serve some of the best starters, I guess it was also because I was very hungry.

After spending a good one hour eating and watching the beach, I decided to head back to Trippr. It was almost time for sunset. I picked my spot and got my camera to watch one of the best sunsets I have seen in Gokarna. It’s a tough competition for which is a better spot for sunset, the Kudle Beach or Middle Beach!

I then headed to Sunset Cafe Beach , which is right beside Trippr. You have to order the Shakshuka there, it was so delicious! So amazing and you can hear the waves while having food, I could sleep right there after a tiring day.

Day 2 in Gokarna: Staying at Zostel

I woke up early in the morning to have a little swim and sit by the sea. These are some of my favorite things to do, spend time by myself. I then decided to check out from Trippr and headed to Zostel.

After an amazing first day, it was time to get back to the routine of having breakfast at Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen. I ordered the dosa and the coffee again.

Today was going to involve a lot of riding because I had planned to visit Murdeshwar. Murdeshwar is approximately 82 km away from Gokarna, and it takes two hours to reach there.

Visiting the Murdeshwar temple and the Gopuram

Raaja Gopuran in Murdeshwar

While on the way to Murdeshwar, you will also pass through Honnavar, where you can explore the backwaters. Murdeshwar temple is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for two main things:

  • 2nd Largest Shiva statue in the world, standing at a height of 37m(~121ft)
  • 2nd Largest gopuram, which is 18 storeyed at a height of 72m(237ft)

You can see the Gopuram as soon as you enter the Murdeshwar town. After parking, I directly headed towards the temple first for the darshan. If you’re going on a weekend, you will find it really crowded and the darshan can take you anywhere between 30 minutes to 1hour.

Shiva statue view from the 18th floor of Raaja Jopuram

Just behind the Gopuram is the Shiva state, which is really humongous! Even taller and bigger than the one in Kemp Fort in Bangalore. Now comes the best part, there is a lift which takes you to the top of the Gopuram on the 18th floor, isn’t that exciting? The 360° view from the top is really breathtaking.

With the big Shiva statue at the back and the huge Arabian Sea in the background, the view couldn’t get any better.

Cost to go to the top of the Gopuram : ₹20

After enjoying the panoramic view from the top of the Gopuram, I headed to see the Shiva statue from close and also visited the temple underneath it.

It was such a calm and serene feeling visiting the Murdeshwar temple and no Gokarna trip can be complete without visiting this place.

Murdeshwar Temple Timings: 7 a.m – 1 p.m. & 3 p.m – 8:15 p.m.

Raaja Gopura Timings:  6 a.m.  – 8:15 p.m.

After spending a good two hours at this place, it was time to get back to Gokarna. But before that, it was time for lunch. I had a quick lunch at Kamat restaurant just outside Murdeshwar town and headed towards Mirjan Fort!

Stop by the historic Mirjan Fort

Mirjan Fort near Gokarna

Mirjan Fort is a historic fortress built in the 16th century by the rulers of the Vijaynagar Empire. You can see the great bastions, escape routes, and watch towers at the fort. It’s best to visit the fort during the monsoon or just after it, as it turns all green because of the overgrown grass on the walls of the fort.

It’s a great spot for history lovers, though they don’t let you take your cameras inside. I spent a good 30 minutes and then headed back to Gokarna.

Timings of the Mirjan Fort : 8 am – 5:30 pm

You can also visit Belekan Beach if you have time. Near the beach, there is also a Hanuman temple, which gives you a great view of the sea and the beach! One can also do the Gokarna beach trek starting from Belekan Beach!

Once I reached back at Zostel I spent the rest of the evening resting on the sunbeds and watching the sunset from there.

Visiting Mahaganapati Temple & Mahabaleshwar temple

After relaxing for a good time, I planned to visit the temples by walk as it is very close to Zostel. Start by visiting the Mahaganpati temple and then heading to the Mahabaleshwar temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva as well.

You will not be allowed to visit the temple if you are not wearing a dhoti. You can either rent or buy it from nearby shops. The same applies to girls, no short/revealing clothes are allowed inside the temple.

A little history about the temple is that it was built in the 4th century. According to mythology when Shiva gave Raavan the Aatma linga while on his way back to Lanka, he was not supposed to keep it down. Everyone was afraid if Raavan reached Lanka, he would be the strongest, thus Shiva made him drop the Aatma linga, and that place happened to be Gokarna.

Since he tried to lift the stone back and wasn’t able to do it, he named the stone/linga Mahabala, which translates to the strongest. Thus the temple got its name as the Mahabaleshwar temple.

Temple timings : 6 am – 12:30 pm & 5 pm – 8 pm – Everyday

The temples also serve Prasad Bhojana. I did try it on my first-ever trip to Gokarna and would definitely recommend it.

Prasad Timings : 12 pm – 2 pm & 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Having dinner at Zostel Cafe

Chicken Ghee Roast at Mantra Cafe in Gokarna

Once I got back from the temple, I was very hungry and decided to have food at the cafe in Zostel. The cafe has some amazing panoramic views and they serve delicious food. You definitely need to try the non-veg starters, though a little expensive but totally worth it.

It was nice to talk to fellow travelers after dinner and then go to bed as tomorrow was going to be another long day.

Day 3:  Walk to Kudle Beach

I woke up by 8 am and then headed to the town as I had to return the scooter. After returning I planned to have breakfast at Zostel. After a great breakfast watching the sea, I was ready for the famous Gokarna beach trek, which covers all the famous beaches of Gokarna. I checked out and kept my luggage in the waiting area.

Zostel to Kudle beach is just a 1km walk and takes 15-20mins. As soon as you start to descend to Kudle Beach, there is a small Hanuman temple there, which they say is also the birthplace of Lord Hanuman .  Not really sure if it’s this or Anegundi in Hampi.

Kudle Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Gokarna, which is covered with hills on both sides. It’s best to walk barefoot and traverse the long lengths of the beach!

You can either swim or enjoy the different water sports here. Since I wanted to experience all the beaches, I thought to try water sports later! Towards the end of Kudle Beach, you’ll find steps that lead you to the most famous beach of Gokarna,” Om Beach”.

Reaching the beautiful Om Beach

Om Beach from the viewpoint

It takes another 20-30mins to reach Om Beach from Kudle Beach. Once you have climbed the steps from Kudle Beach you’ll reach a road, instead of following the road climb the volcanic rocks and you’ll find the arrows on the ground pointing you to Om Beach.

The beach gets its name because it resembles the Hindu religious symbol “Om”. The shape can only be seen when you’re on the way from Om Beach towards Half Moon Beach.

As soon as you reach Om Beach on the left side you’ll see the famous Namaste Cafe . It’s best to have a quick lunch here, and then move towards the other beaches. The food at Namaste Cafe is pretty average, not sure why the hype. Maybe because the restaurant overlooks the sea!

After having a quick lunch, I moved towards Half Moon Beach. If you don’t want to hike, you can also take a boat from here directly to Paradise Beach. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to spot dolphins!

You can also swim at Om Beach, but be very careful as it has a sudden drop.

The sun was at the top, and I thought It was better to keep moving and rest after Half Moon Beach.

Gokarna Beach trek: Heading toward Half Moon Beach

Gokarna Beach trek

The route from Om Beach to Half Moon Beach is not an easy path, and at times you are walking with a drop of 60ft on your right side. It’s better to do this with other travelers as you might get lost and the path is not straightforward.

When you have just started from Om Beach, you’ll find a path near a restaurant going toward your right, which will lead you to Om Beach viewpoint . Make a stop there and see the Om Shape being formed by the beach.

It takes 30 to 40 minutes to reach Half Moon Beach from Om Beach.

The beach gets its name because of the crescent-shaped beach. It’s not really a big beach, but it’s nice to just relax in the water here.

You can also find a few shacks here providing snacks, I relaxed for some time and then started to Paradise Beach.

Is Paradise really found at Paradise Beach?

View of Paradise beach and Small Hell Beach

The path might not be clear after Half Moon Beach. You need to start from the back of the last shack. This is the toughest part of the Gokarna beach trek, but you have an amazing view of the Sea on the right. It takes close to 40 minutes to reach Paradise Beach. Before reaching Paradise Beach, you’ll find a small beach called the Small Hell Beach. This was my favorite beach a few years back, as I had camped here for three days.

Paradise Beach is just a few meters away, you’ll find a lot of smaller shops selling you chips and cold drinks here. When you reach Paradise Beach, you’ll also find a camping site. Yes – people come and camp here for a night!

Back in 2018, the beach was not known by many travelers and thus was very offbeat. Over the years with so much infrastructure being built, the beach has lost its charm. I swam for a while and rested near Small Hell Beach. Since it was already 4 p.m., I headed back to Kudle Beach to experience the sunset from there!

  • Sunset at Kudle Beach

Sunset at Kudle Beach

It took me close to two hours to reach back to Kudle Beach from Paradise Beach, and as soon as I reached Kudle Beach I dropped dead. There was barely any time for trying any water sports so I decided to watch the sunset by myself.

And don’t just leave after the sun has set. Wait for the magic to happen after that. I sat there thinking how amazing this trip had turned out to be. This was a power-packaged Gokarna trip where I got to experience so many amazing places!

Since my bus was at 9 p.m., I decided it was time to get back to Zostel and freshen up. Before heading back, I stopped at my favorite spot for dinner. Any guesses? By this time, you guys already know it’s Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen, which doesn’t just serve breakfast but all the meals!

After that, I walked to the bus stop and took my bus back to Bangalore.
