Travel assist Errors. UPDATE!!!

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

  • Add to quote

Bought a 2021.5 Atlas SEL Premium RLine in April last year and it's been good for the most part; only issue I've had is Travel assist constantly throwing up the "Travel assist currently not available" error. I noticed it a few weeks after I got the car and took it in but the dealership said nothing was wrong. At the time I noticed that it only happens when it's cold. Well recently it's been worse. From the moment I start up the vehicle it just starts going off with the chimes every 10 seconds. It's made the vehicle undrivable. I called in to VW customer service today and complained about it. They said take it to a dealership. I called the dealership like 5 minutes away from my home (not the one where I bought the vehicle) to set-up an appointment for next week and the person I spoke to said I just needed to reset the ACC speed and to bring it in. I tried to tell him that it was more than just resetting the ACC speed and he blew me off and said to just bring it in and he'll do it. Took it in and he got into the vehicle and tried to reset it but no luck there. The error just kept going off and even with the car parked. They plugged their computer into the obd11 port and didn't really get anything other than the system is working fine but one of the sensors in the front of the car isn't communicating with properly with the system. Will have to take it back in next Thursday so they can take a proper look at it since. Has anyone experienced this travel assist issue and what was the fix Update 1: 02/04/2022 : So i took it to the dealer yesterday morning and dropped it off. I got a call in the afternoon that the car was ready to be picked up and that the issue was fixed. they said they had to reset the system and that seemed to fix it. drove it for a little bit after and parked it for the night. started the car this morning and the travel assist error came back on as usual with the chime every 10 seconds. Also noticed that there was water dripping from the headliner of the vehicle. looked up and the front passenger side of the headliner was all soaking wet as it had been raining all night in NoVa. To say I was pissed was an understatement. I had my 6 month old son in the car so i turned around and took him to his grandmas house and then took the Vehicle back to the dealer. This Vehicle is not even a year old and has only 6000 miles on it. I'm considering getting a lawyer and filing a lemon law case Update 2: 02/07/2022 - Got a call from the dealership this morning that they put my vehicle through a "leak test" and could tell that there was a leak but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. They've been instructed by Volkswagen to stop all work on my car as they're going to send someone from the quality department to come take a look at it and figure it out. They don't know when the person will be out and they don't have a loaner vehicle for me at the moment

New update: My wife had to take it back on president's day because the light came back on after I picked it up the Friday before. Another error showed up too. Front assist not working. So that meant at the time I was driving my car, the front safety assistance features were not going to work. They changed the whole steering wheel and that seemed to fix it. Haven't had any issues with travel assist since. To the best of my knowledge, VW knew the fix was changing the whole steering wheel but asked the dealership to change button parts and control unit on the old steering to see if it would fix it

This is so funny but this post is so true I’ve heard of few experiences

NEW UPDATE: See below for the work that was done on my Atlas "CUST STATES CK WATER LEAKING INTO VEHICLE ALONG FRT OF SUNROOF AND LIGHTING PANEL TECH WATER TESTED SUNROOF-- LEAK COMING FROM UNDER SUN ROOF FRAME- INSPECTED DRAINS- CLEAR - FOUND SUNROOF OUTER SEAL ADHESIVE NOT HOLDING-QTM INSPECTED-CONTACTED TECH LINE REMOVED GLASS AND REPLACED OUTER SEAL- RETESTED -OPERATING TO VWOA SPECS AT THIS TIME TRAVEL ASSIST WARNING CAME BACK ON--CHECK AND ADVISE TECH RAN GFF-FAULTS B17B804 B17B8F2--RAN TEST PLAN DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED J1158 STEERING CONTROL UNIT CLEARED FAULTS AND SYSTEM OPERATING TO VWOA SPECS AT THIS TIME. " The travel assist Errors resumed the very next day and a new error has started showing up too. FRONT ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE. NO SENSOR VIEW. At this point it's time to start the lemon law process

22 Tiguan, SEL R -- I have the same problem "Travel assist currently not available" screen with a warning chime at 1 second to 5 minute intervals. This is a July vehicle with 4,700 miles on it. I think I will print out this thread and bring it to the dealer. I thought it was rain dependent but today, with clear weather, made no difference.

I thank the lord I don't have a heated steering wheel. lol

Update 01/09/2023 - this is still an outstanding error. VW Service has told me for 7 months that theres a software update coming. So annoying driving a car that constantly chimes. the car isnt even a year old and i'm prepared to get rid of it !

There is no software update that'll fix a hardware issue. The steering wheel in my atlas had to be changed to fix it on mine. There was something wrong with the wiring that causes it to short out the system. Have them change the steering wheel

Thanks rbridge and Onyez. I made sure steering wheel was no heat at startup. Had no problem since. I'll wait till the first oil change and bring it up at the dealer. Haven't seen this on the TIguan forum yet.

Been fighting with my 2022 Tiguan SEL-R since October 2022. Travel assist not available- got a loaner and the solution I was told is the lane assist sensor IN the steering wheel, and that will fix the travel assist error - part is not available. Drove away tonight after being without the car for 4 days and on went the original T.A. error. AGAIN. The LANE ASSIST feature is turned off. How the HELL do I TURN OFF travel assist until this is figured out?!

turn off the heated steering wheel and leave it off (it worked for me)

Been dealing with the annoying sensors going nuts for the last few months as well, found this thread yesterday and disabled the automatic steering wheel heater and no beeping. Im highly considering just getting rid of the car instead of trying to have vw fix it after seeing this thread.

What happened to the "lemon law " and buy back? I thought this was going to be the end of the car. I would never put up with this much inconvenience. I wish you well.

They got it fixed. Took a QC manager from volkswagen coming out to look at it though. the steering wheel had to be changed to fix the issue with the driver assist issue. there was a short in the system

It would be fine if the warning (and excruciating chime!) only triggered upon the driver attempting to switch on the assist function. But no, it’s gotta chime and chime and chime and chime, regardless, without any way to stop or even tell the robot overlords, “Message received! Thank you!”

trust me i understand. back then once i started the car, it would just start going off and continue every 10 seconds of so. i'm not going to lie, that whole experience almost turned me off to the car. i just crossed 10k miles last week

When the car's manual is 400 pages you know that trouble is coming. There is something great about simplicity. I do like many of the features, but hate how difficult it is to deal with simple things in the car.

Been waiting 6 months for a new steering wheel for my 2022 Tiguan SEL and there's still no ETA. My cruise control shuts off every time the warning chimes. Does anyone know the process of requesting a buy back?

Okay. Took the GTI in to document the issue. The tech could not duplicate the screen alert & chime (no surprise, since it’s random/intermittent). He did find that VW shows a service bulletin, indicating it’s the fault of the steering wheel electronic internals, and their recommendation is replacement of the wheel. He had the parts department put in for one, though the system shows it’s back ordered with no estimate of time to fulfillment.

If you qualify under the lemon laws of your state . just document the issue with proof of non performance from the dealer or VW. Every state has different requirements, some better than others.

I’m getting this warning regularly after having the windshield replaced last week. Recalibration says all is good. Hmmmm I have a ‘21 Arteon SEL-R 4Mo

I had my windshield replaced but I was having the travel assist warning months before the replacement.

German cars seem to be plagued by electronic gremlins. I guess it's not their strong suit. From my stand point,I don't like all the electronics on screen with out hard knobs to control most operations. I admit to being old fashion. Should never take 4 or 5 months to solve simple issues.

I have 21 arteon doing the travel assist thing no heated steering wheel. Dealer said it is out of alignment and not covered by warranty abs is$500 to fix.. seems like it should be covered

I have 21 arteon no heated steering wheel. Dealer said some sensor in grill is out of alignment and not covered under warranty. Will be$500 to realign it..

I just went through a buyback with VW of America for my 22 gti in WA. Same issues, travel assist malfunction, random chime, new steering wheel (on backorder for several months). After several visits to the dealership, I requested a long term loner, then I began the buyback with VW customer care. Just got my check yesterday, and I have to say, the whole buyback process wasn't that bad.

I was told a month ago my Tig needed a new steering wheel to end the Travel Assist warning screens. They changed the wheel last week, so far no warning screens.

My new steering wheel is in. It will be installed on Monday.

how long did you wait for the new steering wheel?

Golf mk8 Travel Assist errors

  • Add to quote

I have a November 2020 golf 2.0D Style. For the last few weeks getting these Travel Assist errors, took it to the garage today and was told a new steering wheel was needed at a cost of €1380 fitted, and it would not be covered under warranty . Looking online it seems that this is a known issue anyone else been told this?

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

It was a warranty issue in the UK whilst under warranty but not after.

Which means they knew about the issue for there to be a TPI. I basically went mental and said I suffer with mental health problems (I do and repetitive noises are like torture to me) I have a child with multiple disabilities and uncontrollable noise sets him off screaming (he is non verbal) I basically threatened them with Damages and likened it to sound torture used in warfare (yes I actually stated this), only quoted the consumer rights act everything that's on Which? Consumer Rights Act 2015, said it meant it wasn't fit for purpose, of satisfactory quality and it couldn't be repaired within a reasonable time frame (quoted me 5 months) also if they already have repaired yours then they have used their 'opportunity of repair' under the CRA if the fault returns after this you are entitled to return for a refund but this is usually minus fair wear and tear/usage or a replacement. oh before I did this I did ask if it could be turned off, a reasonable request? to be told no, had it been able to be turned off, I would have kept the vehicle and awaited the 5 month steering wheel replacement. Also they tried to blag me it wasn't a fault, but the Dealership sent me a video of their vehicle check stating it was a fault and there was a replacement part to rectify (again meaning they knew about it) and also tried to argue I needed to 'prove' it was a fault before time of delivery, which I did with the forum screenshots and its across the whole VW range, not limited to Tigs (clearly). I told them I would go motor ombudsman and trading standards, they didn't like it and offered to 'investigate and get back to me the end of the week' By that time I had the offer of a refund and an agreement to sign that I wouldn't pursue in future. I'd be interested to know if the replacement steering wheel warranty is independent of the original car warranty.

  • Jan 19, 2024

I get the feeling VW have not made any improvements to the steering wheel to stop these warnings and bongs appearing. After all, I had no issues with the first steering wheel for about a year. The wheel was replaced which sorted it but now about a year later I am having issues again. If VW have not found a cure for this problem new steering wheels will become an annual event.

Yes but in my case, the new bongs appear just after instaling the new software in the VW dealer on August 23, now I think that I won’t upgrade anymore

Given the faults you have to me it sounds like a communication issue, in this case I would assume its either software related or gateway related. This is my opinion in this particular case.

Sudden issue with travel assist

  • Add to quote

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

Perhaps if you switch to regular cruise control then it will stop the warning? I assume Travel Assist is deactivated and unavailable when you're in the "regular" cruise control mode, although I haven't actually tested that...

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

The same thing has happened for me twice (7,000 km driven). Both times it has reset itself after a couple of hours (car parked). It is a bug that leaves no error code to trace. Second time it happened when driver door wasn’t closed 100% completely. First I got error about the door and right after that I got TA error. This happened during driving.

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

happen to me yesterday, the Travel Assist and the ACC both are not available - receive similar warning. After driving for 30+ miles, and park for lunch, when I came back from lunch they're back to normal.

Got the exact same message today with 300 miles on Pro I bought 4 days ago. I'll follow advice here to see if it goes away overnight. Owner's Manual not very helpful - mostly jargon on limitations of system.... It mentions cleaning the windshield (which I then did) and radar sensor (wherever that is?). The periodic beep warning sound is annoying as is the warning message sometimes flashing on and off on the driver's display binnacle. It's like give me a break - you told me already....

I did not get the beep warning sound, it's just the message on the display

The second ID4 I test drove had zero dealer setup. I showed the Internet Sales Manager how to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit. When I drove it there were three different warnings, one was travel assist, one was reading road signs and I forgot the third. The next test drive was at a different dealer. I mentioned the problems with the other one and he said it wasn’t setup correctly at the dealer. In the other dealer’s defense, their ID4 salesman was getting trained so they didn’t know how to set the car up. Anyway, my point is that it’s possible it is a dealer set up issue. If it happens again I would take it in for some tweaking. I do see a couple alarms for very short periods but usually in a parking garage or right after I pull out of the driveway and lose WiFi. Both times it’s only for less than a minute.

My car had 6 miles on it when I took it out for a test drive. When I got back I had salesman change it to Fahrenheit. The car does a good job reading speed limit signs so I don't think I'm having the road sign issue you had. When I head out a few hours from now I'll find out if the travel assist has reset itself. There's a lot to learn about on this car; it's more complex and less intuitive than my '17 Bolt EV I would say. Both cars come with rather poor documentation.

Mine had a failing front sensor/ camera, when it got hot it errored out and shut off ACC and DA.

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

This highlights an important point regarding sunshades for the windshield. It's worth a few extra bucks to get a sunshade with a cutout for the camera so the camera doesn't bake. The VW version has this, as does the one that I saw reviewed on here in another thread. The downside is they're difficult to roll up but I don't see another option.

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

I'm not surprised the front camera failed. It gets ridiculously hot. When I was installing my radar detector up there, I could not touch the camera module for more than a quick tap. This thing must be drawing some serious wattage for a camera, I have no idea how it functions in hotter climates.

Just curious why did you install a radar detector there? (Where actually and why?)

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

Mine just did the same thing, I got in the car and it said travel assist not available. Drove it ~10 miles, left it for about an hour, got back in and it was fine. Odd error

I received the same error. Very annoying. Parked the vehicle. Went back to it an hour later and the err had cleared. This should not occur.

Same error happened to me twice with a new car. Will VW address this problem? Could be a hot sensor issue (both triggered after parked under the sun, BTW the sunshade won't work because the camera is glued to the windshield). The chirping warning is really annoying, tbh the acc is causing more issues than help.

I got this yesterday. Car had been parked outside in the shade with A/C on for less than half an hour while I was in the store. Reset it at a stoplight by putting the car in park, and turning the car off and back on again with the column "Start" button.

Had this issue today on my ID4 with close to 900 miles on the car so far. The message comes up on the display but no beeping sound. Will continue to monitor how often this happens.

I have this same issue with my Skoda Superb 2021. When I picked it up at the dealer, it was not occuring. 1 week later i got the error message maybe once or twice a day. Now a month later the problem has gotten significantly worse, I get the message aprox 3 times every minute. Even when I turn off ALL Drivers assist systems it still shows up. Im returning it to my dealer on monday morning, its undriveable at the moment. Thing is, the travel assist actually works then I toggle it on (Altough it sometimes cant steer the car in the center of the lane on the motorway and sometimes it cant even keep me INSIDE the lanes). I will come back to you guys if they give me and answer of whats the problem. I have tried factory reseting the car and also tried cleaning the camera/ sensor lense.

This issue happened again to me today, but unlike before, the notification is shown also with a tone heard. It comes up during my entire trip and get annoying a while. VW needs to fix this as part of their OTA rollout.

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

Had it pop up for a brief second on the information cluster and then quickly went away. Anybody find more information about this?

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

My TA issue has been getting worse over the past few months, booked in with the dealer today hopefully they can determine the cause of the problem. 🤞

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

Did this ever get resolved? My 2021 Atlas with 17K won't stop doing this. Dealer had it for 2 weeks, replaced the camera and did a software update. Handed it back and it still does this the entire drive. Cloudy and sunny, but never at night.

I just had this happened to me driving in the freeway. It was there for a couple of minutes and then went away on its own. I'm not sure what to make of it.

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

Your front cameras (on the bumper) might be dirty. I was getting the error pretty consistently. It went away after I washed the car.

Gosh, I tried that too, we have a local membership to a carwash and that was our first thing. But maybe it's that sensitive? Dealer replaced the front camera and had multiple issues updated software. But released the car saying it was clear. We have read issues with steering wheel. I guess we just need to keep very clear data and then return.

I would not drive an old car with that problem let alone one under warranty. Make them fix it!

Trying to figure out what the fix is... Of course it stopped acting up after they replaced the camera. Took it home and it started right away. I handed it back for another week and it didn't happen "for them". It happens the entire drive for me and I have it recorded. Trying to figure out what the heck is the fix??? So frustrated.

Doesn’t matter. They are the experts and can call Berlin for orders.

Perfect!!! I will get a bit more pushy. Thank you...

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

I have the same issue today.

We just narrowed it down to the steering wheel. We can make this happen when the steering wheel is warm or the heated steering is on, then grab the wheel at the 12:00 position. Now we just need to make another appointment at the dealer. The dealer could not find the problem.

I had this issue with my car, got the steering wheel replaced about a year and a half ago and the issue has re-surfaced. I now sit outside of my warranty period - any ideas how much this might cost to fix? I've been told by VW the initial diagnostic check will be £99. Wondering if I bother purchasing the extended warranty instead? (c.£500ish for another year)

golf 8 travel assist non disponibile

This warning happens to me driving off most cool mornings as the front window re-fogs up a bit. For me, I cycle the wipers and the warning clears after a moment or two. I offer this just to be sure that you're not facing something simple like that.

I wanted to post the solution for anyone else searching as well. We had this exact same thing happen. I cleaned all the sensors thinking it wS just dirty sensors. Still it would ding travel assist unavailable every 10-30 seconds while driving. We took it in and it was a malfunction with the steering wheel. They replaced the steering wheel and the issue has been resolved!
