September travel to Greece  provides visitors with the best of all worlds—lighter crowds, lower prices, pleasant weather , and a full slate of events and attractions. In September, you can enjoy music festivals, picturesque religious feast day celebrations, and the Athens International Film festival.

Most tourists will find attractions open toward the last part of the month less crowded—a few places on the Greek islands will close at the end of the month, and activities for children start to wane as the school year begins. Transportation schedules start to be cut back about September 15.

September is also the beginning of the repositioning cruise season. This is when many cruise lines offer some great discounts while moving their European vessels over to the Caribbean for the winter season.

The climate in  Greece  is typical of the Mediterranean countries with mild and rainy winters, warm and dry summers, and lots of sunshine. There are regional variations. The winter is milder in the Aegean and Ionian Islands as compared with the northern and eastern mainland of Greece. The  Greek islands  may be more humid than mainland Greece.

The beginning of September in Athens is still warm but the heat of the summer dissipates by the end of the month as fall approaches, though you might see a day or two that reaches as high as 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

What to Pack

You'll need good walking shoes for exploring ruins and walking along cobblestone streets. And, for the beach, sandals are perfect. If you'll be in the water, consider a pair of water-walking sandals to prevent injury in case you step on a sea urchin or sharp rock. 

A bathing suit is a must as are sundresses and short-sleeved shirts. Don't pack too many T-shirts because you'll find plenty of souvenir tees in Greece. For evening, or in case of a rare rain, bring a lightweight jacket. Toward the end of September when the weather is cooler, layering will keep you comfortable. In beach areas, you can enjoy dressing lightly with flowing cotton fabrics. If you are visiting churches or religious festivals, long pants or skirt and a sleeved shirt will be appropriate.

The meltemia, the northern winds blasting the Cyclades in summer, have finally ceased and the Aegean Sea is at its warmest.

Another reason why September is a fantastic month to travel to Greece is that everything is still open but the large crowds have started ebbing. The Greek schools open in early September, so most Greeks or other Europeans have gone home.

The hotels are starting to reduce their rates, especially in September’s second half. The restaurants and the cafes are more relaxed and can offer better service to their customers.

The average temperature of September in Athens, which is centrally located in Greece, is usually between 20 – 30 C. Peloponnese, Cyclades, Crete, and Rhodes can be 2-3 C higher than Athens. Northern Greece will be 2-5 C less.

If you are concerned about your budget while visiting Greece – and nowadays we all are budget-wise – most accommodation prices can go down from 10% to as much as 30%, or even more if you’re booking well in advance.

But even if you decide to find available accommodation at the last minute, hotels are not usually fully booked, so it will be easier than in August. The same applies to streets, restaurants, and bars, lines in archaeological sites, and of course the best positions on the beaches.

In terms of weather, the warmest islands will be Crete and Rhodes but all islands will be warm enough to swim in Greece in September. The islands of the Northern Aegean (Lesvos & Chios ) or the Ionian might be slightly cooler than the hot waters in Crete or the Cyclades.

Greece is a paradise for outdoor activity lovers. 80% of Greece is covered by mountains, and 25% of the total land is covered by natural forests mostly firs, pines, planes , and beeches.

Greece has 21 major rivers, 50 natural lakes, and about 6000 islands, and islets, 220 of which are inhabited. Not to mention the gorges, the caves, the volcanoes, the vertical rocks for climbing and so much more.

Some of the most popular outdoors in Greece in September that you can participate in are:

Greek Maritime Golf Event

On September 7-10 at  Costa Navarino  in Messinia, the Greek Maritime Golf Event will take place. It is organized by  Birdie Events , the brainchild of renowned Greek PGA golfer  Thanos Karantzias . The courses offer breathtaking views of the  Ionian Sea , the historic  Bay of Navarino , and the picturesque port of Pylos.

Sparthathlon in Sparta, Peloponnese

At the end of September, Sparta is organizing a quite demanding 25km marathon, Spartathlon, with participants from all over the world. The route is based on the one done by Pheidippides – as described by Herodotus – who traveled from Athens to Sparta in 490 BCE to ask for help.

Besides the famous ‘This is Sparta’ area (with the archaeological museum, site, and the fantastic Olive Oil Museum), you should visit nearby UNESCO Mystras.

Hike Menalon Trail in the Peloponnese

Hiking in the bare areas – like it is in the Cyclades- might be challenging on the warmest September days so I suggest hiking in forests. Fantastic hiking destinations are:

• Kea Island in the Cyclades
• and Parnitha Mt in Athens.

If you are in the Peloponnese you can go to several rivers there such as :

Scuba Diving in Greek Islands

Warm water also means that it is the perfect time for a scuba diving adventure . Top sites for scuba diving include:

Sites and Museums

All sites are still open for most of the day, especially the Acropolis in Athens and if you are visiting on the last weekend of September European Heritage Days   is celebrated. That means that all monuments and many museums in Greece have free entrance .

Greece has one of the longest coastlines in Europe and along the coast, you can find many beautiful towns and villages, perfect for your vacation. Some of my favorites are:

Religious Festivals in Greece in September

September is a fantastic month for the religious feasts called ‘Panigiria’ (a Greek word for a feast). Panigiria are also organized throughout the year everywhere in Greece, both on islands and the mainland. These local events may be tied to celebrating Greek Orthodox saints but also eating, drinking, socializing, and dancing feasts.

On September 13th, Nisyros island (a majestic active volcanic island) will organize the Panigiri at the monastery of Holy Cross. The locals offer braised goat with orzo, loukoumades with honey and wine:

The Panigiri at the Monastery of Kalamiotissa (7 & 8 September) in Chora of Anafi island . All the locals participate in the celebration, while small boats bring pilgrims from nearby Santorini . Meat with pasta is offered (and plenty of wine of course!).

Festivals Around Greece

Besides the religious festivals, there are also musical, cultural, and culinary festivals organized, often with international interest. You can combine your visit to a Greek destination with enjoying a local festival and enjoy a unique Greek experience.

Aegina Island Fistiki Festival . At the port of Aegina, more than 60 stands are set up along the beach, offering visitors large quantities of pistachio in all its forms and variations. The program of events includes traditional dances, performances, lectures, and guided tours to museums and archaeological sites.

Aeschylia Festival:   Hosted at Eleusis , 14 miles west of Athens, the Aeschylia Festival is a stable cultural institution for the expression of artistic and innovative creations for the last 48 years.

Rhodes International Festival :  In the UNESCO old town of Rhodes , at the stunning Palace of the Grand Magister, the Knights’ Palace, you can enjoy unique concerts by Greek and foreign composers, classical music, and opera. More about the festival here.

Moving Around in Greece in September

You will have no problem catching the ferries or sailing the islands as Greece in September still feels pretty much like the high season. Towards the end of the month, some routes may change especially taking into account that the school year has begun. How to Get to Athens Port (Piraeus) from Athens Airport

Best Greek Islands to Visit in September

September is an idyllic time to visit the Greek islands whether you want a last-minute top-up on your tan, one last chance to partake in some epic island nightlife, or simply some time to unwind amongst nature before the chill of winter takes hold.

You might think you could pick any Greek island and come out trumps, but with 227 Greek islands to choose from, each with its own characteristics, and varying open seasons, it’s not quite that simple, that’s why we’ve compiled this list of best Greek islands to visit in September.

9 Greek Islands You Can Visit in September

Do you want to be in a Greek island where you can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing escape away from the hustle and bustle of other tourists? Milos might be the island for you! Less crowded than the likes of Santorini and Mykonos and cheaper too (even in peak Summer!), beautiful volcanic Milos is a paradise for visitors looking to kick back and relax in nature.

Milos is known for its beautiful beaches and has more than 70 black, red, and golden sand beaches to choose from. The moonscape of Sarakiniko Beach and the rock formations at Kleftiko are must-visit places and with sea temperatures remaining high at 23c in September, there’s no better time to swim, snorkel, or scuba-dive.

Culture vultures might find themselves a little bored on Milos as there aren’t that many museums or historical sights of interest but if you’re happy to spend your days pottering around the picturesque towns and villages, hiking in the countryside, soaking up the sun on the beach, taking a wine tour, boat excursion, and enjoying leisurely lunches and dinners you’ll be in heaven.

The resort towns on Milos do start to shut down from the middle of September so if visiting in those last 2 weeks you should expect tavernas and shops to be closed or offering limited services but the main town of Chora is always bustling and the port town of Adamas still a delight.

Daytime temperatures in September are warm enough for sunbathing with highs of 26c but you might want to pack a sweater for the evening as temperatures can dip to 20c. It’s unlikely that you’ll get any rain but you should be aware that the strong Meltemi winds that plague the Cycladic islands from May are still around until mid-September lasting 2-3 days at a time.

A party island during July and August when the 18-25 backpacking crowd descend, Ios returns to its sleepy roots in September welcoming a more mature group of travelers in the 35+ age bracket though if you search for it, the nightlife can still be found in the narrow backstreets of Chora. Just don’t expect any epic beach parties after the first week.

With daytime temperatures still reaching 26c, the perfectly picturesque backstreets of Chora are delightful in September if you hate crowds during the day.y You’ll have these steep winding streets pretty much to yourself – A photographer’s dream come true.

After perusing the boutiques which have their end-of-season sales in September, make your way up to the church of Panagia Gremiotissa and the 4 hilltop churches to take in the amazing view – This is the iconic spot for sunset but it’s equally jaw-dropping during the daytime too.

You can also visit the ruins of Skarkos, see the old windmills, visit the amphitheater, and pop into the archaeological museum. When you’ve had enough of the sleepy September streets, head down to the port and people watch as the ferries arrive and depart or indulge in beach time – the sea temperature still reaching 23c-24c during the afternoon.

Ios can feel sparse since Chora is the town where everything is concentrated, this not helped by the very limited bus service which only runs between the port, Chora, and Mylopotas Beach. So, if you want to explore off the tourist trail and find a hidden cove all to yourself, you’ll need to use your own steam either by hiking there or hiring a quad bike.

The top spot for non-stop partying in Greece from June-August, cosmopolitan Mykonos shows visitors its serene side in September with the end of party season in sight resulting in a less crowded, more relaxed island with prices dropping significantly though not temperatures with highs of 28c still to be expected.

September in Mykonos provides visitors with that perfect goldilocks effect – not too crowded and not too quiet. If you want one last chance to party at Paradise and Super Paradise beach or in one of the large clubs, get to Mykonos early to mid-September before party season closes.

On the other hand, it’s not difficult to avoid the party places but for the quieter experience, visit at the end of September, unlike the smaller islands you’ll find things stay open until the last week of the month.

The maze of white-washed cobbled streets in Mykonos Town are near impossible to enjoy properly in July and August due to overcrowding, but in September you can truly appreciate these quint-essential Greek streets including the iconic waterfront area named ‘Little Venice’, the place to watch the sunset.

Mykonos’ most picturesque and peaceful beaches are North of Mykonos Town so hire a car or quad and find your own piece of secluded sand for the day at Agios Sostis Beach or Fokos Beach  – Water temperatures are ideal at 25c, just perfect for swimming and snorkeling, or you might even enjoy some surfing at Ftelis Beach if those Meltemi winds hit.  

The most Northerly island in Greece, Thassos is one of the last remaining hidden gems of the Greek Islands. Compact yet packed with variety – things for the history-loving culture vulture, the hiker, road-tripper, and beach babe  – Thassos is a picturesque island to escape to when you want that quintessential Greek experience without the hoards of other tourists spoiling the occasion.

Due to its location, the dry, sunny season on Thassos is shorter than the islands in the South, therefore, the later you visit, the iffier the weather. Temperatures range between highs of 24c and lows of 14c with the weather generally a lot nicer in the first half of the month than the second when cooler, cloudier days are to be expected with some rain and wind.

Sea temperatures are still high throughout September though at 24c so even if it’s not warm enough for a suntan, it’ll be warm enough for a swim.

Thassos Town which is also known as Limenas is open all year so if you’re worried about tourist resorts being too quiet for your liking, stay in the main town – Here old and new merge together with the old city walls and remains of Grecian temples coinciding happily with the modern world.

There is a regular bus service to the towns/villages around the island thanks to the coastal ring road though, from the middle of the month, services do decrease so a hire car can provide more freedom to see the ruins at Aliki Beach, Archangelpos Monastery, the remains of the medieval castle at Theologos, and the old marble quarries in the South-east.

For hikers, the island is crisscrossed with trails – use the village of Panagia as your gateway to exploring forests that perch on the side of Mount Ipsarion.

The largest of the Cycladic islands, Naxos has something for everyone. Beach lovers will want to explore the South East coast with its pristine cedar wood beaches but if the Meltemi winds are blowing (a possibility until the middle of September) and you don’t relish the thought of sand blowing in your eyes, find shelter below the chapel of St George at Agios Georgios of Aliko beach.

Naxos, like other Cycladic islands, does start winding down towards the end of September but if you’re staying in Naxos Town (Chora), you’ll still find enough to see and do – Start off by exploring the cobbled backstreets around the Venetian Castle area known as Kastro before making your way to the iconic Portara for sunset – the ‘doorway’ ruin from the unfinished temple of Apollo.

Hikers will find plenty of hiking trails passing through the scenic mountain villages, but you can also hop on a bus or in a hire car to admire the scenery with a visit to the picturesque villages of Halki, Filoti, and Apiranthos.

Archaeology fans will want to visit the 2 Kouros Statues on the island and there’s also the Temple of Demeter but check bus times carefully as from the middle of the month they will be reduced and you could find yourself stranded at one of these places for more hours than you’d like.

In September, you can expect temperatures to reach 25c with the nights dropping to 20c – At the start of September there’s still plenty of sunshine to enjoy and the sea temperature is still high at 23.5c ensuring plenty of swim time but as the month progresses you do run the risk of encountering some overcast days and a sweater or jacket, especially once the sun sets, is highly recommended.

With the same weather conditions as next-door Naxos, this slightly smaller island provides that quintessential peaceful Greek escape but also provides nightlife in the fishing village of Naoussa, the bars remaining open here until mid-September should you seek a last-minute dose of island fun.

Parikia is the main town on Paros, a maze of picturesque white-washed streets with snoozing cats, souvenir shops, cozy cafes, and bright bougainvillea flowers all hidden behind the commercial waterfront. It’s here that you’ll find the famous Byzantine ‘Church of 100 Doors’ (Panagia Ekatonapiliani) from the 4th century and the archaeological museum.

The fishing village of Naousa, with its idyllic backstreets and inner harbor, becomes a party place at night and is still bustling in early September, but by the middle of the months, the nightlife scene has moved to Parikia leaving Naoussa much like a ghost town, albeit a very pretty one!

Unlike other party resorts in Greece, Naoussa is well worth visiting during the daytime – there’s little sign of the party scene save for the closed bars and clubs so don’t be scared off from visiting!

Visitors can explore the hilly interior on foot by following the farmer’s trails that criss-cross the island – the Lefkes-Prodromos trail is a short 1-hour walk along paved marble stones perfect for an introduction walk, alternatively explore the island by horseback, Naxos having not one but two horseback riding centers.

There is a good bus service to the villages on the island, though a reduced service from the middle of the month. A trip to the village of Lefkes is recommended, and for history fans, a visit to the marble quarries of Marathi – famous for the extraction of Parian marble from the 3rd millennium BC right up until the 19th century.

7. Kefalonia

Becoming popular after Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was released at the cinema, Kefalonia is a gorgeous island located in the Ionian Sea west of the mainland. Made up of golden sand beaches, sapphire bays, and white cliffs with a rugged mountainous interior, September is the perfect month to explore this island when it’s cooler, less crowded, and less costly too!

Kefalonia benefits from a slightly longer season than the Cycladic islands though being on the West side of Greece it does experience more rain and storms earlier in the season.

When packing you should prepare for some short yet sharp rain showers during the day with thunderstorms overnight, especially if visiting from the middle of the month. Don’t despair though – it’s warm rain with temperatures reaching highs of 25c and sea temperatures the same so you’ll still get sun and swim time. The rain showers can be very localized meaning it could be stormy in Lassi but sunny in Skala so consider hiring some wheels to escape the rain clouds.

Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is nestled on a hillside overlooking a stunning narrow harbor and makes the perfect base for most travelers who plan on spending their days’ sightseeing, however, the cosmopolitan fishing village of Fiscardo can also provide a tranquil stay.

A day trip to the village of Assos is a must along with a trip to Myrtos Beach, the most iconic beach on Kefalonia with its limestone cliffs and white sand and pebbles. In stark contrast to Myrtos Beach, Xi Beach also has to be seen with its reddish-brown sand set against the white cliffs – Do as the locals do and give yourself an exfoliating mud bath right there on the sand!

A range of events take place in Kefalonia throughout September with the Ionian VolksFest running until the 4th September, a range of concerts and events taking place at the Municipal Theatre of Argostoli, and a number of feast days and religious events, September is a wonderful time to immerse yourself into Greek culture rather than purely exploring the touristic side.

Otherwise known by its Greek name Zakynthos, Zante is the third largest island in the Ionian Sea. Similar to nearby Kefalonia with its limestone cliffs with white, golden and, brown beaches, Zante, however, provides something for everyone with peace and picturesque scenes as well as some amazing party places.

Party animals will still be able to catch the buzz of Laganas if visiting in the first 2 weeks of September, the clubs won’t be buzzing as they were in July-August but there are plenty of end of season events to enjoy up until the 15 th – Be sure to book tickets for the Rum & Raybans end of season boat party! If visiting in the 3 rd week of September and beyond you’ll find Laganas growing more and quieter by the day but the lively resort of Tsilivi remains open until October.

The weather in September starts off glorious with highs of 28c though the temperature drops at night with lows of 14c and a noticeable difference in weather between the first 2 weeks and the last 2 when some short yet sharp rain showers should be expected along with some overcast mornings though the cloud cover has usually burnt off by midday allowing a tanning session on the beach some afternoons.

Two of the most memorable things to do on Zante are to take a boat trip around the island and to visit Navagio Beach aka Shipwreck Beach which is the most famous beach on the island, only accessible by boat. September makes a great time to visit this iconic picture-postcard beach as it can be overbearing in August since there is no natural shade and the sand/rocks are burning hot. You also benefit from fewer crowds – perfect for getting those postcard shots.

Known as Kerkera by the locals, Ionian Corfu is a unique Greek island due to its blend of Italian, French, and British heritage – Nowhere else on Greece will you find the islanders playing a game of cricket! In fact, it’s Venetian heritage almost lets you enjoy a 2 for the price of 1 vacation as you look out across the terracotta tiled roofs thinking you’re in Italy whilst tucking into a tasty Greek salad – truly the best of two countries rolled into one and best of all, no early closures, Corfu remaining open for business through September and beyond.

Chic and elegant, Corfu Town has something for everyone but culture vultures will find themselves truly spoilt for choice – Walk around the 26-hectare palatial estate of Mon Repos taking in the sights and smells of the gardens, explore the winding backstreets, look down on the town from the viewing platform at the Church of Saint Spyridon, and then, if you’re not ready for the beach, hit up the wealth of museums – seriously, there’s so much to do here that you won’t get bored.

Temperatures on Corfu in September range from highs of 28c during the day but drop down to lows of 17c at night so a sweater should be packed. Short yet sharp rain showers should also be expected as the weather is changeable in September – one minute you’re laying on the beach topping up that tan, the next you ask yourself where the sun went as you run for cover or dive into the sea, water’s water after all!

This rainfall makes Corfu a very green island, so much so that it’s known as Greece’s emerald island, and mid to late September is a glorious time to explore it whether you’re on foot or have a hire car. The picturesque Venetian streets in the mountain village of Palia Peritheia are a delight to explore since the oppressing heat and crowds of tourists are a thing of the past in September.

Hikers can begin their journey along the trails to the summit of Mount Pantokrator from this picturesque village too but if you want the views without the effort, just head to Mouse Island aka Pontikonisi or take in the views from Kalami which are sure to remind you of the Italian Lakes.

Yes, we know, Mykonos is all about the summer vibes. But is it? Really? The truth is that the good-time party island of the central Aegean is packed to bursting between May and August. It can be hard to even find a hotel in Mykonos Town or close to the bumping sands of Paradise Beach, let alone a hotel that won't break the bank. September marks the end of all that, and the month gradually sees the resort towns empty out. That's great news for travelers keen on seeing the more authentic side of the island, perhaps with day trips out to the ancient sanctuary at Delos or ATV rides to the reef-ringed beaches of Lia and Kalafati in the east

Crete is so far south that it's got one leg in the Libyan Sea. It's actually closer to the coast of Africa than to some parts of Greece. That should set the bell's a-ringing for any budding meteorologists who are reading, because it means that the island sits on the same latitude as countries like Syria and Tunisia. The upshot? There's oodles of sun here well into autumn. In fact, September is still positively hot, with average highs of 29 C. Crete is also blasted by the Meltemi wind system in June and July. It hits the beaches along the northern shores, in Rethymno and Chania, and can make sunbathing a bit of a chore, but usually calms down by autumn. To squeeze even more out of the lingering summer warmth here, consider heading across to the south coast, where the rugged gorges of the Sfakia region meet hippy towns like Matala.

The draws of Santorini are well known: Rugged volcanic landscapes, uber-romantic whitewashed towns, some of the most photogenic sunsets this side of Thailand. We get why millions of folks are magnetized by the isle each year, but why go when everyone else does? The summer rush is crazy on Santorini, cranking up hotel prices by nearly 50% or more. Add to that packed-out cliffside bars and a continuous influx of people from cruise ships, and it's easy to see why this is one of the top Greek islands to visit in September. In fact, it might even be a better choice for sunset viewing, as the light fades over the top end of silhouetted Therasia island at this time of the year.

Some seasonal flights to specific Greek islands can stop running as the summer turns to autumn, leaving travelers with the option of going to Athens and only Athens. That's not the end of the world if you want to have your taste of island life, though. Get down to Piraeus and hop on the 1.5-hour ferry to Poros. It's a charming little speck in the Saronic Gulf, with a whitewashed town set on a volcanic rock. You can cycle out to hidden coves like Love Bay or Monastiri Beach, where September days sometimes mean having the whole place to yourself. Or you can stick to the harbor and dine on mezze while watching the millionaire yachts sail by. It's totally up to you. One bonus with Poros is that it's a five-minute ferry from the Peloponnesian mainland, with good road access to incredible history sites like Mycenae and Epidaurus.

It's almost impossible to go any further east than Rhodes without ending up in Turkey. The good news there is that this island sits neatly out of the way of most of the so-called medicanes, which are the strong storms that can buffet the Ionian Islands in autumn. And, while we can't guarantee good weather, Rhodes also boasts average highs of 28 C in September, not to mention just 1.5 days of rainfall. Not bad, eh? At least that should be enough to head down the famous southeastern coast to Lindos Beach and the snorkeling reefs of beautiful Kokkini Ammos. Rhodes is also a corker of an island for history buffs. The main town is crowned by UNESCO castles that date to the age of the Crusades, and you can still walk the ancient harbor where the wonder of the Colossus of Rhodes once stood.

Another of the eastern islands of the Aegean Sea that should help you dodge any autumn storms in Ionia, Kos has something of a reputation as a no-holes-barred party mecca. It's certainly that, what with the appropriately named Bar Street in Kos Town and the strips of Kardamaina resort buzzing with life all throughout the summer months. September ushers in a slightly more chilled evening scene, with sandy bars on Lambi Beach offering chill-hop sessions, though you can still go all night if you want to. The best thing about autumn here is that temperatures cool off just enough to put hiking back on the menu. There are loads of trails, with the best weaving up from uber-cute Zia village to the pine-studded Dikeos mountains.

Paros is widely seen as the transportation hub of the Cyclades chain. It's served by oodles of ferries that come and go to and from both big ports like Piraeus and smaller islets in the Aegean. The good news is that many of the connections continue on well into the autumn season, so you shouldn't have any issues getting here if you don't have access to your own boat. The even better news is that Paros is a truly enchanting place. Head beyond the ferry port and there's loads to see, including the lively little fishing town of Naoussa and its whitewashed cottages. Travel to the Greek islands in September, and you might just have chosen the perfect time of year. Here's which islands in Greece to visit in September and why.

Greek Island Holidays in September

Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. Its perfect mix of warm weather, beautiful islands, breathtaking scenery and great food makes for a relaxing vacation.

Many people visit Greece in the peak months of July and August, but personally, I think September is the best month to hit the Greek islands.

This is because the school holidays have finished in Europe, the highest temperatures are over with, and the shoulder season in Greece offers better value for money.

This short trip planning guide will help you decide if visiting Greece in September is for you, and will also provide travel tips and advice on which are the best Greek islands to go to in September.

Best Greek Islands to visit in September

Greece has over 220 inhabited islands, so there are plenty to choose from! Here's the 10 best islands in Greece to visit in September:

Inevitably, first time visitors to Greece will be attracted to the ‘big name' islands such as Crete, Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes. If this sounds like you, then I suggest reading this: 2 Weeks in Greece Itinerary: Athens – Santorini – Crete – Rhodes .

Don't discount the other islands though. If you want to get away from it all, you could choose quiet Greek islands in September such as Schinoussa or Iraklia .

Better still, put an island hopping itinerary together, where you could visit several islands over a couple of weeks. It all depends on how adventurous you are!

Greek islands in September weather

When it comes to weather, September may be the best time to go to the Greek islands. Not too hot, not too cold, just right!

All in all, September can best be described as having great beach weather, particularly the first couple of weeks. Some areas often get temperatures of 25-30 degrees during the day. This makes it perhaps the hottest European country in September.

That said, the climate can vary a lot, and the best places to visit in Greece in September for good weather will be in the south, which is typically a lot warmer than northern Greece.

For example Crete, which is perhaps the warmest Greek island in September might be basking in sunshine, but the northern mountains on the mainland might be feeling more chilly.

The absolute best islands to visit in terms of good weather would be Crete and Rhodes, but September is still warm enough on most islands.

Even Ionian islands like Kefalonia, which is quite far north, should be fine to swim and spend some time on the beach. I remember it being very warm when I was grape picking in Kefalonia in September in 2004. That said, bring a couple of warmer clothes, just in case!

Is there anything else I should know about September in Greece?

September is when things start getting back to normal after the peak tourist month of August. Schools reopen on 11 September, which means by traveling after this time you'd have even more of the islands to yourselves!

You might find that hotel prices become cheaper after the 11th of September. I recommend using Booking for reserving your hotels online.

Festivals and Events in Greece in September

September is an interesting month for religious feasts called panigiria. These local events are tied to religion, and there are masses in churches and monasteries celebrating Greek Orthodox saints.

There are other cultural aspects though. In short, a Greek panigiri might be best described as an eating, drinking, socializing and dancing feast. If you get the chance to experience one, go for it.

Finally, the European Heritage Days are celebrated on the last weekend of September. These are cultural events happening all around Europe.

In Greece, all monuments and many museums have free entrance on those days. As this weekend often coincides with the International Tourism Day (27 September), it’s worth checking out any local events wherever you are.

Here's my top suggestions of islands in Greece to visit in September.

1. Crete 

Crete is the biggest Greek island , and it would take you about a month – or a lifetime – to explore it properly. As it’s further south than mainland Greece, it tends to be warmer than other parts of the country, which means that swimming can be more pleasant.

The weather in Crete in September is about perfect. It's slightly cooler than the very high temperatures of August, but still warm enough to spend most of your time in shorts and T-shirts. It would be my number one choice for best Greek islands in September.

In fact, Crete almost feels like a separate country. It’s got unique and very diverse landscapes, ranging from gorges to tall mountains and from deep rivers to some of the nicest beaches in Greece. There are tourist resorts, vibrant cities and remote villages.

There are plenty of things to do in Crete in September, including visiting archaeological sites. The most famous one is Knossos – but you should also check out Festos, Gortyna, Matala, Malia, Zakros and many more. There are also magnificent castles and museums all around the island, and it would take several trips to explore them all.

Don't miss: Hiking the Samaria Gorge . This is a real highlight of the island, and the temperatures in September are ideal for the experience.

In terms of food, Crete has some of the richest and most varied local cuisines in Greece. You will definitely be impressed by the flavours and the freshness of ingredients. Goat, lamb, fish, cheese and barley rusks, along with many vegetables and the local strong drink, raki, are what makes the Cretan cuisine so distinctively unique.

As Crete is a big island, there are several local events all around. In fact, September is a great month for the local panigiria. Some of the most important fiestas are on 8 and 14 September, in several areas and monasteries. Ask around, and locals will be more than happy to point you to the closest one.

You will find several international flights to Crete’s main airports. If you are in Greece already, you can either fly or take an overnight ferry from Athens.

Another fantastic island to visit in September is Rhodes. The biggest island of the Dodecanese, Rhodes is home to an amazing UNESCO medieval town that is very different from most other Greek islands.

You can stay in the main town and have more time to explore the castle and even walk on the medieval walls.

Much like Crete, Rhodes has very mild weather in September. Taking day trips to the beaches around the island is fairly straightforward. Some of the most popular beaches in Rhodes are the cosmopolitan Elli, the busy Ialissos, the lively Faliraki and the famous Anthony Quinn beach .

However, if you are looking for a little less action, you can drive around the island and discover your own favourites. Or you can take a sailing trip and enjoy a care-free day. Rhodes is a paradise for surfers, scuba-divers, snorkellers and anyone who likes beach activities.

Even though Rhodes is a popular island, many areas have kept their authentic character. You can attend several local events if you are in Rhodes in September.

Some of the biggest ones are the Vine celebration in Fanes, on 5-6 September, and several panigiria on 8 and 14 September, in many areas of the island. Additionally, there are numerous cultural events on 27 September, which is the International Tourism Day.

Rhodes is best approached by a short flight from Athens. In September, there are also international flights from several countries.

3. Tinos Island

For people who are after laid-back, off-the-beaten-track destinations, Tinos is an excellent choice. Due to its incredible Lady of Tinos church, it’s got a reputation of a religious island – but it’s a lot more than that.

Tinos has some of the most picturesque villages in Greece. There are more than 30 villages that are worth stopping by, and this is no exaggeration!

A few names to keep in mind are Pyrgos, Volax, Kardiani, Ysternia and Agapi, but really all villages in Tinos deserve to be explored.

On the beach front, Tinos will not disappoint. There are dozens of beaches for all tastes, and in our experience most of them are fairly quiet in September. If you are looking to relax, you will enjoy it a lot.

In terms of food, Tinos has several local dishes. Try the small kafeneia – every little village has at least one. Tip – if you feel active, there are several well-signposted paths that you can follow to hike between certain villages.

You can get to Tinos by ferry from either Piraeus or the smaller and friendlier Rafina port near Athens.

Milos is an upcoming Greek Cyclades island, and it’s mostly famous for its beautiful beaches. Apart from Kleftiko and Sarakiniko, that feature on all Milos travel guides, the island has at least another 70.

If you're looking for beach holidays in September in Greece to soak up the late summer sun, it doesn't get better than this!

You’ll need several days to explore them all, and if you visit in September you may have a beach all to yourself. I've a full guide here: Best beaches in Milos .

People who like exploring will love Milos, as there are many quaint villages where fishermen used to live. While many of those fishermen’s houses are now being rented to tourists, the villages are still authentic and pretty.

In addition, the island has some wild landscapes – if you like driving, you can explore a lot of the island by land.

When I visited Milos, I took a day 4WD trip focusing on the island's connection with mining. Combined with a visit to the mining museum in Adamas, this was an eye-opening experience. It is always interesting to see what local people did for a living before tourism came along.

We also really enjoyed a sailing trip of Milos on the Chrysovalandou II catamaran. We saw some of the best swimming and snorkeling spots on the island, and had an amazing meal.

Milos has a domestic airport and is also easily reached by ferry from Piraeus. There are ferry connections to some of the other Cyclades , if you want to go on an island-hopping trip.

Lefkada is one of the Ionian islands , to the west of mainland Greece. It has some of the nicest sandy beach in all of Greece and is overall a very green island. The inland villages may remind you of the mountain villages in mainland Greece!

Lefkada’s main town has some picturesque parts. Walking around, you will discover a few museums, with a focus on history, local tradition and ethnography. Just outside the town, you can visit Agia Mavra castle, originally built by the Frankish invaders in the 14th century.

Even though it’s an island, Lefkada is connected to mainland Greece through a bridge. This makes it rather popular with Greeks driving their own cars, as there are no ferry fees. The closest international airport is Aktion airport on mainland Greece, 17 kms away from Lefkada.

6. Santorini in September

It’s hard to keep Santorini out of a list of the best Greek islands in September. While some islands start closing down after August, Santorini is one of the liveliest Greek islands at this time of year.

If quiet islands are not your thing, Santorini can be a good option, although I personally preferred Santorini in November !

Santorini has lots to offer. To begin with, there are the amazing views to the volcano, the quaint landscapes and the famous sunset. In addition, there is an abundance of wineries and quality restaurants, and the island is famous for its local specialties.

Santorini is home to the ancient site of Akrotiri, and also a few historical and cultural museums and wineries. Going on a wine tasting experience is a must!

You can drive around and explore the smaller villages, but you won't need a vehicle in Fira and Oia as it is largely pedestrianized.

The small volcanic island has several unique beaches. You can explore some of them by land and reach certain others on a sailing trip. In addition, you can take a cruise to the volcano, and walk on the small volcanic islands – it’s an almost eerie experience.

That said, I won’t lie – In my opinion Santorini doesn't have particularly great beaches. All the Greek islands mentioned above are much better in terms of beaches! 

If you are visiting Santorini in September, make sure to check out the local panigiria. The biggest ones happen on 8 and 14 September in Perissa, on 21 September on the little Thirassia island, and in Kamari on 24 September.

There are several direct international flights to Santorini. Alternatively, you can catch a short flight from Athens, or take a ferry from Piraeus port.

7. Hydra Island (Close to Athens)

If you have limited time in Athens, but still want to see a Greek island, Hydra is a good option, as it’s just over an hour away from Piraeus port. Even though it’s so close to Athens it’s entirely different, as no vehicles are allowed!

The small island has a lot to offer, including a beautifully preserved main town and interesting museums. There is also a lot of beautiful nature, so you can combine a hike and a swim.

8. Kefalonia

As I mentioned earlier, I spent some time in Kefalonia in 2004 grape picking, part of which was in September. I remember the days being very warm, although at night the temperature did drop a little which I noticed as I was camping out in my tent!

Kefalonia has some lovely sandy beaches, great views, and also of course wine to taste! The local wine is known as Robola, made famous by the Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières.

The residents of Mykonos must breathe a sigh of relief when August is finally over with! Not that the tourist seasons ends of course, as September is still a good month to go to Mykonos.

The absolute peak of the party scenes may be over, but there's still plenty of things to do in Mykonos in September. And if paying over the odds for cocktails on the beach is your style, then don't worry, you can still do that too!

While you are there, spend some time enjoying walking the streets of Mykonos town, and take a boat trip over to the amazing archaeological site of Delos.

Finally, we have Naxos. This could be termed as the family-friendly version of Mykonos, with a much lower key party scene, and a lot more authenticity.

Naxos also has some great beaches to spend time on, and can be nice and quiet in September. Naxos is a good choice for a family holiday to a Greek island in September.

September is a good time to go hiking in nature and to walk around ancient ruins and urban areas. To avoid the heat and biggest crowds, go out in the mornings and late afternoons. The bright sun and clear blue skies might enchant you and/or be uncomfortably hot.

1.Athens — Tour the Whole City

At the beginning of the month, there are highs of about 33ºC (91ºF) degrees. It is hot under the sun, and there are large tourist crowds. The size of the crowds becomes moderate by the end of the month, and at the end of September it is much more comfortable to visit.

Nine hours of daily sunshine together with 57% average humidity makes the 30°C (86ºF) average highs feel a little warmer. The rainfall is low. This is excellent weather for strolling and seeing the ancient ruins in Acropolis Park or for walking along Ermou Street and the Monastiraki street market.

You could also go to the big city parks such as the one around Mount Lycabettus in downtown Athens that has a 272-meter (892-foot) peak and the most scenic views of the whole Athens area. In the early evenings, you can watch pretty sunsets there too.

Athens has sandy beaches including an urban beach next to Piraeus Port, Kavouri, Edem, and golden sanded Apeiranthou. The water temperature is about 26°C (79ºF), and this is good for swimming. To avoid heatstroke, drink lots of water and fruit juices.

2. Crete — Hike and Enjoy the Beauty of High Summer

Crete has semi-arid weather in September and ideal sea temperatures of about 25°C (77°F) for diving, watersports, and swimming. The beaches are very good, and September is one of the best months for windsurfing due to strong winds.

Crete is Greece's largest island and bigger than the state of Delaware. In this large area with only 700,000 people, you can find solitude in nature in the mountains and beaches and off-the-beaten-track hikes. Samaria Gorge, the longest canyon in Europe, has a particularly famed hiking trail.

There's a diversity of interesting places to visit on Crete such as very ancient ruins at Knossos and the Heraklion Museum. Flights from Athens take an hour, and there is an international airport.

3.Naxos — Enjoy Very Good Beaches and Beauty Scenery in Great Weather

In September, the Cyclades islands off Greece's eastern coast are dry and have great weather. It is moderate tourism season, and you can enjoy the warm weather and the fruits of harvest season. Daily temperatures range from about 29°C (84°F) to 19°C (67°F). The seas are ideal at 26°C (79ºF).

Naxos is a great Greek getaway island because it is quite large with some of the best beaches, nature, and the highest mountain in the Cyclades. There are temples, Venetian towers, and Byzantine churches. There is a good network of hiking trails.

Naxos is the greenest and most fertile of the Cyclades. It is known for very fertile fields that produce excellent crops and for having among the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean Sea. Flights from Athens take about 45 minutes, and ferries take between 4 to 6 hours.

4.Delphi — Hike around one of the Major Archeological Sites

For most people, September has the best hiking weather to hike around on the ruins of Delphi since it is semi-arid and the average temperature range is from highs of about 24°C (75°) to comfortable sleeping weather at night with lows of 16°C (61°F).

The small mountain has extensive ruins that are in good condition. It is one of Greece's major archeological sites. You can see the Treasury of the Athenians, a large stadium, and a large theater. Both seated thousands of people. You can learn about Greece's history at the modern museum.

The area around Delphi is also good for nature hiking. You can hike to the Corycean Grotto and to Parnassos National Park on trails. The drive from Athens to Delphi takes about 2½ hours.

5.Nafplio — Tour and Hike around the Peloponnese and See the History

The Peloponnese is the southern part of the mainland of Greece. It is a large peninsula that is connected to the rest of Greece by a narrow isthmus. It is very rugged and has many hills and mountains and forests. It is filled with historic places such as Olympia and Mycenae.

Nafplio is about two hours from Athens by driving, and it is one of the main tourist bases for touring the region. It is interesting for seaside port scenery and also for large fortresses, Palamidi and Akronafplia. It has an interesting history as well, which left many landmarks.

The Venetians controlled it for hundreds of years, and it became the first capital of Greece. The average temperatures in September range from 28°C (82°F) to about 16°C (61°F). It is semi-arid with about 3 cm (1 inch) of rainfall for the month and only 2 days of rainfall.

High to Moderate Tourism Season: Touring Advice for September

In September, the weather is great. It cools down and gets a little cloudier at the end September. By the second or third week of September, most Americans and Northern Europeans return home, so tourism and prices moderate.

• Swimsuit is on top of this list for a reason. It will be a pity not to swim in the Aegean or the Ionian Sea in September. The water temperature is amazing after the summer heat and the beaches are not that crowded.
• Sunscreen is another must-have item. The sun still burns a lot and is quite dangerous. Better be safe than sorry!
• Hat/ Bandanna /Scarf in a few words something to cover your head from the sun. You might think that it is not necessary, but it is, especially if you are planning a hike.
• Beach towel: We recommend a beach towel with microfibers that dries fast so that you can move from place to place as quickly as you want.
• Sunglasses: apart from protecting your eyes from the sun, they can become really stylish.
• Beach shoes: a lot of beaches are rocky and steep. At the same time, they are worth visiting, so put a pair of beach shoes at your packing list and feel free to explore every shore.
• A reusable water bottle: It is 100% certain that you will get thirsty on the beach or while hiking. Plastic bottles are not the best option. They are not eco-friendly and they do not keep your beverage cold. Take a reusable thermos as your vacation bottle!
• Beach bag: all the above need to be put somewhere in order to get transferred. A beach bag of your choice will do just fine. If you do not have enough space for a beach bag in your luggage, you can use your backpack.
• A pair of flip-flops not only for the beach but also for a casual walk and of course for getting comfortable at your hotel.
• An after-sun product: the skin needs to get moisturized after a long sun exposure. The options are far too many – take the one that suits you.
• Swimsuit cover-up: just something to put on after swimming while heading for lunch/dinner. Bring a few options along so that you can mix and match.
• T-shirts: Pack a bunch of several T-shirts. They are light to carry, they do not occupy much space in your suitcase, they can be washed easily even when you only have a sink.
• Shorts: once again several pairs of shorts are ideal for a morning walk, going to the beach or a small hike.
• Dresses for the ladies. Some casual dresses are perfect throughout the day. Pack one or two formal dresses in case of a more formal night out. Plus, long dresses are the best clothing option for the Greek islands, where the winds can get really strong.
• Trousers: since it’s the start of the autumn you will need a pair or two of long trousers.
• Jumpers & Jackets are of great importance. It’s 100% sure that you will need them. September nights can get cold, and as we have already said, the difference between the northern and the southern part of Greece is quite big, especially during the last days of the month. As a result, a jacket might be handy even in the middle of the day, in some cases.
• Scarfs: On top of being stylish, a scarf can make the difference on a cold night.

Greece is full of hiking paths! No matter where you are, on an island or the mainland, you will come across a hiking trail. The chances are that you will be fine with your sneakers because the majority of the paths are not of extremely difficulty. Greece in September is one of the best places to visit in Europe since it’s one of the quieter places. We find this really bizarre as it’s still got exceptional weather, but we won’t let the secret out if you don’t.

Athens is a wonderful place to be in September. It’s full of sunshine as the sun only sets at 7:45 PM , so wear enough sunscreen (and don’t forget to reapply). As Greece’s capital city, there are countless things to do in Athens . 

As the birthplace of democracy and many a philosopher, Athens is full of history. A marvelous way to explore this is by taking this Best of Athens tour . You’ll see the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and other famous sites that you probably learned about in school.  

Besides Athens’ historical attractions, the city also has stunning beaches to laze on and warm waters to dip the toes into . Some of the best beaches near Athens include Brexiza and Sounio Beach.

Crete Weather in September

The weather in Crete in September is absolutely splendid, with an average temperature of 80ºF. We think it might even be one of the best Greek islands to visit in September, with over ten sunshine hours and lovely Cretan hospitality. 

There are many places to stay in Crete , as it’s easier to find more affordable accommodation in Greece’s fall season. Another great reason to visit Crete is there’s so much to do, such as this Heraklion for foodies culinary tou r , perfect for food connoisseurs.

Santorini Weather in September 

The weather in Santorini, Greece, in September is one of the reasons why this is such a tremendous month to visit this Greek island. It’s much more moderate than Crete and Athens, regardless of what the other locals try to tell you. 

In fact, this might be the best time to visit Santorini , especially if you want a more chilled stay. It’s much more secluded than in the summer, as it’s off-season for the island . The average low temperature is only 50ºF, hardly like autumn anywhere else in Europe.

Weather in Mykonos, Greece, in September

When you think of Greece, Mykonos likely comes up as one of the spots to visit. Mykonos’ nightlife is internationally famous, with hundreds of thousands flocking to the island yearly during summer.

This hustle-and-bustle usually lasts until August, with Mykonos’ weather in September cooling down slightly as fall begins . 

We love Mykonos during this time, as the prices go down, but the weather remains hot, with the average sea temperature warm and steady. The weather in Mykonos in September shows off stunning days, with cooler temperatures coming in the evenings.  

However, you must remember that the average wind speed in the Cyclades is always high, especially compared to northern and eastern mainland Greece, and pack your suitcase accordingly.

What To Pack For Greece – Packing Lists For Every Season

A complete “what to pack for Greece” guide, covering all four seasons. Based on our personal experience of living and traveling in Greece for several decades!

Packing for a Greek vacation

Often thought of as a tropical destination, Greece is a country with 4 seasons. What you need to pack for Greece will depend on the time of year you travel and exactly where in Greece you are going.

Most people take a Greek vacation in summer. However, the numbers of travelers who visit in the shoulder season are on the rise. Plus, thousands of world nomads choose Greece as their base.

In this article, I will break down the items you need to pack for Greece. I have included sections on clothes and shoes for each season, personal items, and anything extra you might need.

Just to introduce ourselves quickly! I am Vanessa from Greece, and my partner Dave is from the UK. We live in Athens and travel extensively around Greece. This article is based on our own experiences.

Let’s start with a quick overview of the weather in Greece.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece has a so-called Mediterranean climate. This means that our summers are hot and dry, while our winters are relatively mild and wet.

I’ll say this again: Greek summers are HOT . We get the warmest weather from mid-June to mid-September, and temperatures peak in the summer months, July and August.

Daytime temperatures here in Athens can easily go over 35C / 95F. In recent years, we’ve seen highs of around 43C / 110F, and it was quite unbearable. The islands and countryside tend to be a little cooler, but are still very warm.

Greek summers are not humid like in tropical countries, so you generally won’t have to worry about sudden thunderstorms. You will actually find that locals welcome summer rain, after long periods of drought.

During spring and autumn , the weather in Greece can be a little hit and miss. There may be warm days and cool nights, plus some rainy / windy days here and there.

Finally, winter weather in Greece is generally mild by most people’s standards. That said, we do get lots of rain and snow. It CAN get quite chilly, especially up north, where temperatures can drop to -20C / -4F! 

Let’s start with what to wear in Greece during the most popular time – summer.

Packing for a summer trip in Greece and the Greek islands

When it comes to packing for Greece in summer, things are fairly straightforward. Hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, a few lightweight clothes, walking shoes, beach bag, and you’re done!

My best advice for packing is this phrase: pack light .

Also, think about what you are likely to do. As an example, if you are most interested in our gorgeous beaches and nature, you will need loose, light-colored clothes.

If your main aim is to go partying and clubbing every night, you will want to bring a selection of clothes to choose from. Still, it’s possible to pack light, especially if you plan your outfits in advance.

Let’s break things down.

Bring lightweight clothes for summer

Given that daytime is warm, your Greece packing list for summer should mostly include light clothing.

Men will be fine with some  t-shirts  and a few pairs of  shorts  or  lightweight pants / trousers .

Summer dresses ,  light tops , and  shorts  or  skirts  are the best choice for ladies. You can always jazz them up with some accessories and jewelry. 

As a rule, you can easily get by in casual clothes. If you are visiting places off the beaten track, like we do, you won’t even need any proper evening outfits.

With that said, what to wear in Greece also depends on your type of vacation. If you are going to upscale restaurants, bars and clubs on islands like  Mykonos  or  Santorini , definitely bring a few  stylish clothes .

A wedding in September

Smart trousers and a nice buttoned shirt will work for men. Ladies will be fine in short or maxi dresses, or tops and capri trousers, and some stylish accessories.

Do I need any warm clothes for summer in Greece?

Even though our summers are warm, I suggest that you bring a couple of warmer clothes. A  long-sleeved jacket  and a pair of  long trousers  or  leggings for ladies may come in handy.

We have many air-conditioned spaces, including museums, airports and, most importantly, ferries.

I always need a jacket when we are travelling on a Greek ferry , as the air-conditioning can be ridiculously cold. Some people don’t seem to care, but it doesn’t hurt to bring one.

The islands can be a bit breezy as well, so bring something to throw around your shoulders. And if you are going to any of our mountain villages, definitely bring a few warmer clothes.

Don’t forget your swimsuit

Swimsuits are the absolute beach essentials for Greece. If you are a beach enthusiast like me, you may end up wearing a swimsuit for most of your time.

When it comes to  women’s swimsuits , pretty much anything goes in Greece. Some ladies, especially from the US, have commented that our bikinis are on the skimpy side.

Summer in Greece

While they are not nearly as tiny as Brazilian bikinis, they tend to be smaller than swimsuits you can get in other European countries. So you might prefer to bring your favorite swimsuit from home.

Guys’ swimwear  comes in many shapes and forms, but you will never see any really long ones.

Speedos are fairly popular, especially with the older generations, which some people find amusing. Just bring something over the knee, and you’ll be fine.

Note:  If you are taking a  volcano and hot spring cruise in Santorini , avoid bringing your favorite white or light-colored bikini. Bring a darker or older swimsuit which you won’t mind getting stained.

The Cyclades in September

It’s also important to know that we have many beaches and coves where a swimsuit is optional. Usually (but not always), they are a bit out of the way.

What to wear in monasteries in Greece

Another thing to consider as you are packing is our  religious culture  and our thousands of churches and monasteries. 

When you visit any of them, please be respectful. Avoid short and skimpy clothes , and definitely do not try to enter in your bikini.

Visitors should be prepared in advance for any religious sites, such as the  Meteora monasteries . While there are usually  wrap skirts  that you can borrow at the monasteries, you can’t always bank on it.

Men should wear  trousers  that cover the knee, or otherwise they might not be allowed to enter.

As for ladies, just bring a long skirt , or maybe a wrap-around sarong. Also, you can bring a shawl to cover up your shoulders.

Best shoes for summer in Greece for women

What shoes to pack for Greece depends on your personal preferences, activities, and style of travel. One thing is certain though – you will walk a fair amount when you visit Greece.

My favorite summer walking shoes for Greece since I first discovered them in 2007 are Teva sandals . They may not be as hard-wear as proper hiking shoes, but they are much easier to wear for most uses.

If you prefer to wear closed shoes, lightweight trainers or summer running shoes are ideal. I was happy to have proper hiking shoes while  hiking to Kleftiko Bay in Milos Greece .

These suggestions are based on walking an average of at least 12-15 kms on a sightseeing day. I’m sure other ladies will have different preferences – please share them in the comments!

Should I bring high heels to Greece?

Even though I’ve tried it in the past, I would never bring high heels on a Greek holiday. Remember that most of Greece is full of cobbled streets, uneven pavements and tons of stairs.

Seriously, I’ve never been to a Greek island without many, many stairs! And guess what? It gets worse if you’ve had a cocktail or an ouzo   too many!

Consider bringing a pair of wedges, platform shoes, or something similarly stylish. Just make sure that they have a sturdy sole.

I suggest that you avoid flat sandals with very thin and flimsy soles. As they offer no support, your feet will end up hurting on our cobblestone streets.

I’m not sure if Ancient Greeks found Greek sandals comfortable, but in my experience they are not all that great!

Best shoes for Greece for men

Let’s face it, men are usually less fussy when it comes to choosing shoes for a Greek trip.

Just bring your favourite pair of comfortable, season-appropriate walking shoes . Also, bring a pair of flip-flops or other shoes that you can wear on the beach.

I should point out here that many visitors swear by  water shoes . These are ideal for our pebbly beaches, as you won’t hurt your feet while trying to go into the sea. They don’t look great, but they could come in handy.

Bring a hat and sunglasses

The first things you will need in Greece in summer are a  hat  and  sunglasses – and not just for your beach days.

A good pair of sunglasses is essential to protect your eyes from the strong sun reflecting on the white marbles in the archaeological sites, or our white sand beaches.

If you have a favourite hat, bring it with you. Or you can easily get a hat everywhere in Greece for just a few euro.

Some people might prefer large straw hats or otherwise wide-brimmed hats. Just be mindful when the strong Meltemi winds  appear, as they can easily be blown off.

Tip: Don’t worry too much about whether wearing a hat will make you stand out as a tourist. It’s more important to avoid a potential sunstroke and your face going pink. Plus, you will notice that Greeks wear hats too.

How much to pack for two weeks in Greece in summer

How much to pack is really up to you and how you prefer to travel. Some people like to travel light and do some washing now and then, as clothes won’t take long to dry.

This is what we do. We find this a lot easier than having to lug around a large case full of dirty clothes. Plus, we’ve found that most hotels / rooms we are staying at will do a proper wash for us.

Other people prefer to pack a lot more than they are likely to need, just in case. This way, they will always have a choice of what to wear in Greece.

I understand that not everyone wants to wash clothes during their holidays. However, heavy luggage can be very impractical, especially if your hotel has lots of stairs.

It’s best to pack light enough so that you are comfortable with your luggage, particularly on the islands.

Two weeks in Greece with hand luggage

If you are visiting Greece in summer, you can easily get away with hand luggage like we do. That said, everyone is different, so we are offering options for any type of trip.

Here are the clothes that we normally take with us for two weeks in Greece in summer , or longer. In fact, we often don’t use all of these clothes!

For context, our days tend to be a mix of sightseeing, relaxing on the beach, hiking, and having lovely Greek meals. We also prefer quiet places over touristy destinations, and are not super interested in wild nightlife. Well, not anymore 😀 

Women’s Greek packing list for two weeks

This is what my summer packing list for 2 weeks looks like:

• 4-5 tank tops
• 4-5 t-shirts
• 2 pairs of shorts
• 2 short skirts
• 1 long skirt
• 4 evening dresses
• 1 light jacket
• 5 pairs of underwear
• 1 fleece jacket (for the ferries)
• At least one pair of leggings (for the ferries)
• 1 pair Teva sandals (more on shoes below)
• 1 pair of flip-flops
• 1 pair of dressier sandals (rarely used)
• 1 large straw hat (which I end up forgetting in our room most of the time)
• 1 sarong (rarely used)

As we usually travel with our own car , I might bring a couple of extra clothes so that I don’t have to wash them too often. But they always fit in a carry on 🙂

My personal travel gear always includes my  mask ,  snorkel  and  fins . Ok, I know the fins sound like a bit of an exaggeration, but I love swimming and snorkeling in Greece. We may not have the most colorful fish on the planet, but the water is crystal clear!

Men’s packing list for two weeks in Greece

Dave is a really light traveler, especially on his  cycling tours of Greece . So he travels with this list of items, at the most:

• 1 dressy shirt
• 2 pairs of cargo shorts
• 1 pair of jeans (rarely used)
• 5 pairs of socks
• 1 pair all-purpose walking shoes
• 1 pair flip-flops

As long as he washes his socks himself, I don’t mind how many pairs he brings!

What if I don’t want to wash clothes?

I get it – when on holiday, you really don’t want to have to do any chores. In this case, you need to calculate how many days you have, and allow for a couple of extra outfits.

In this case, you should bring at least one t-shirt and pair of underwear per day, a few pairs of shorts or other lightweight clothing, plus a few evening outfits.

As you realize, this packing list could get quite long. This is why I strongly encourage you to wash some clothes now and then.

Remember that if you need a certain item, you can always buy it here. We have thousands of cool shops and boutiques all over the country, and you’ll have a nice souvenir!

Sarong vs beach towels

If you visit Greece in summer, you will need a  beach towel . If you don’t want to bring one from home, you can easily buy one here.

Some visitors prefer  sarongs , while others bring  travel towels . I’ve found that neither of those work great with salty water, so I always prefer to have a proper beach towel.

So that’s it for summer! Just a few light clothes and a couple of warmer items, and you’ll be fine. How about the shoulder season though?

What to pack for Greece in the shoulder season

The shoulder season in Greece are the months of March, April, October and November. The weather can be hit and miss, and packing can get a little tricky.

What to wear in Greece in March – What to wear in Greece in October

People visiting Greece in the shoulder season usually pass by Athens. Here is what Athens weather looks like then.

In March, our highest temperatures can exceed 25C / 77F, but it can get as low as 6C / 43F, and even lower some years. October is slightly warmer, with the lowest temperatures dropping to around 10C / 50F.

For these months, make sure you bring some warmer clothes that can be worn in layers. Some long-sleeved t-shirts and a cardigan or other light jacket are essential, and I would suggest bringing a heavier overcoat as well.

March and April are too cold for most people to swim comfortably. On the other hand, if you are visiting in October, definitely throw in your swimsuit. You might get some lovely, sunny days, and the sea is still warm after a long summer.

November is generally colder and rainier, but there are still plenty of sunny days. Bring a mix of clothes that you can layer, including a warmer overcoat .

Athens in November

In terms of shoes, I personally suggest comfortable trainers like Skechers or any other similar brand. I would avoid wearing them for hikes though, as they would probably be destroyed in very little time.

What to wear in Greece in April or May

April and May are two of the best months to visit Greece. People who like outdoor activities, like hiking or cycling, will appreciate the mild temperatures and blooming nature.

While some people will be happy to swim, others will find it too cold – however, it doesn’t hurt to bring a swimsuit . That said, you will need a warmer jacket for most evenings.

What to pack for Greece in winter

Winters in Greece are fairly mild, compared to most other countries in Western Europe. Still, they are not exactly warm.

The coldest months in Athens are January and February, when we often get sub-zero temperatures and maybe snow.

If you are visiting Greece in winter, bring with you some warm clothes. Again, it’s best to bring  layers , starting with basic long-sleeved or thermal t-shirts, and then adding on to that.

In Athens, I normally wear a light thermal t-shirt, a cardigan , and an  overcoat  on top. Northern Greece can get a lot colder though.

Unless you are going skiing or hiking, technical clothing isn’t really necessary. That said, if you own a warm, waterproof jacket , by all means bring it. Alternatively, a waterproof shell coat might come in handy.

Athens in January

Finally, bring a  scarf or neck warmer  – you’ll find it useful for those chilly nights. And don’t leave your sunglasses behind, as you may get some incredibly sunny days.

Best shoes for Greece in winter

In terms of winter shoes, I’m all up for leather boots. However, I find that hiking footwear is a lot better for sightseeing around the ancient ruins. So I recommend waterproof, anti-slip hiking boots like  Merrells  or  Salomons .

Some of our pedestrianized areas can get very slippery in winter. Pay extra attention if you are going to our ancient sites , like the Acropolis, on a rainy day!

With this in mind, make sure that you bring  comfortable shoes with thick soles  that are suitable for long walks on our cobbled streets. Otherwise, your feet will hurt at the end of a long day.

Personal items to pack for Greece

So now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s check out what else you need to pack for Greece. These can roughly be divided into five categories – toiletries, medication, electronics, luggage, and other personal items.

What toiletries should I bring to Greece?

You can easily get most types of toiletries everywhere in Greece. This includes supermarkets, mini markets, cosmetics stores, pharmacies and many souvenir shops.

Any hotel room will typically offer some form of shower gel and shampoo . More upscale establishments will also offer other products such as body lotions and dental hygiene kits.

Sunscreen with UV protection is a necessary item for Greece. It is widely available all around the country, at any time of year.

It tends to be more expensive on the islands and touristy places, so you would be better off buying it in Athens. As an indication, a 50 SPF pharmaceutical brand would cost around 10-15 euro (250 ml bottle).

Mosquito spray is also easily available everywhere in Greece. Don’t worry though – unlike Asia and South America, mosquitoes in Greece are very rarely dangerous. For the most part, they are just a nuisance. Here’s how to avoid mosquitoes in Greece .

In terms of  makeup , it’s really up to you. But remember that our climate is very warm. If your makeup is designed for colder weather it might not keep very well. Many women will find that mascara and lipstick are more than enough.

Finally, if you are traveling from the US, washcloths are not a thing in Greece. In fact, I never knew they existed until I read about them in a travel forum. If it’s something that you need, just bring your own.

Can I bring medication to Greece?

Overall, Greece is fairly relaxed with  medication  laws. You can buy many pills over the counter, though antibiotics need a prescription nowadays.

Pharmacists are very knowledgeable overall, and they should be your first contact point if you develop any health issues. They will usually be able to provide you with some medication, though they might sometimes refer you to a health center.

You can safely bring with you over-the-counter medication such as common painkillers. If your medication doesn’t need a prescription but is uncommon, you might want to check if the substance is allowed in Greece.

As an example, codeine isn’t allowed here, unless accompanied by a prescription.

If you need to bring your  prescription medication  from home, just get a note from your doctor. It’s also best to keep it in its original packaging.

It’s very unlikely that you will be checked, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. I’ve never, ever heard of someone whose medication was confiscated or even questioned at the airport.

Sea-sickness pills are widely available here. There are even herbal pills containing ginger that won’t make you drowsy. You could look into those instead of the traditional Dramamine pills.

Finally, if you have any allergies to gluten, nuts etc, make sure you bring your  EpiPen ! Also, check out my article on ordering food in Greece , where I’ve included a ton of info if you are allergic to common allergens.

Should I bring electronics to Greece?

No one travels without electronics anymore. Most people will have at least their phone and camera , while others may have several different gadgets. This choice is personal and it depends on what you are planning to do in Greece.

If your only camera is your smartphone , all you need to bring is your phone charger. Consider bringing a couple of extra memory cards, especially if you are here for long.

If taking photos is one of your passions, you will probably want to bring your  camera  and  lenses . Make sure, however, that you can store them safely when you go on a sailing trip or the beach.

A  waterproof case  is often recommended for your electronics, though I’ve never found it necessary myself. However, I like using an underwater camera sometimes.

If you have many electronics, consider bringing a  power bank  / portable charger. The most compact ones will be good to charge your phone once or twice, and they are a good backup in between charges.

If you are coming from outside the EU, check if you need a travel adapter . If you haven’t got one, you can get one at the airports in Greece, or at bigger electronic stores. Try asking at your hotel too, as someone may have left one behind.

Finally, if you are planning to read a few books during your holiday, don’t forget your Kindle . With that said, do not dismiss paper books, which you can always exchange or leave behind. Plus, if they get wet, they will just dry up! Even better? They never run out of power!

What type of luggage should I bring to Greece?

This is the million-dollar question. Should I bring a backpack or a wheelie? Should I travel with a carry-on, or allow for a bigger-sized suitcase?

Again, there is no right or wrong answer. Just use the style and size of luggage that you feel most comfortable with. Remember, however, that carrying a heavy suitcase with wheels can be rather impractical.

That said, backpacks are not for everyone either. If you have back problems, of cannot carry a backpack for any other reason, it’s best to avoid them.

As for us, we generally prefer smaller-sized backpacks which are rarely over 8-9 kilos each. It’s just that we simply find it easier to travel with less. If we can do it, you can do it too!

To save space, you can use packing cubes . I’ve been using these lightweight containers for a couple of decades now. They are super useful to separate clothes and keep them tidy and organized!

Daypack for Greece

And now, let’s have a look at your daypack or handbag .

Many articles advertise expensive  travel daypacks , with hidden compartments and anti-theft properties. While I’m sure many people find those useful, I use the same, no-name, modestly priced items everywhere, whether in Greece or abroad.

In my opinion, a cheap, light  backpack  is great. This is where you can keep your water bottle, paper books, case for sunglasses, sun protection, and other items like toilet paper , band-aids etc. It can also double as a beach bag.

Other people prefer a  postman bag , which comes diagonally across your body.

What I would suggest, especially if you are visiting Athens, is to get a  money belt or neck wallet .

This is not to say that Athens is a particularly dangerous city in terms of petty theft. However, quite a few incidents have been reported in the last few years, especially in tourist areas and the  airport metro . 

Pickpockets are generally very skilled, so you may not realize that you’ve been robbed until much later. Even if you have travel insurance, it’s much better to avoid getting robbed.

It’s best to keep your passport , credit cards and larger amounts of cash close to your body. Keep a small amount of readily available cash in your day bag, and you’ll be fine.

Assuming you are visiting in summer, the ultimate Greece packing list should include a few t-shirts, shorts and skirts / dresses for the ladies, 5-6 pairs of underwear, a warmer jacket and a couple of pairs of shoes.

How much money do you need for 2 weeks in Greece?

Being budget travelers ourselves, we usually travel outside the peak season. Our budget has never been more than 50 euro per person per day, including all our accommodation, transportation, food and sightseeing costs. Most people should allow for more, especially if they are interested in any tours.

How much cash should I take to Greece?

These days, you can pay for almost everything by debit or credit card. However, I recommend that you take with you a couple of hundred euros. They can be useful for tips, taxis, and buying souvenirs from street vendors.

Can I use dollars in Greece?

Our final tips for your Greek holiday

Packing for a trip is one of my favorite activities, as it sets the mood for our upcoming travels. At the same time, many people find packing for a trip abroad quite stressful.

It’s understandable, as you never know what the weather will be like. But also, and perhaps most importantly, most people don’t want to stand out as tourists.

After several years of frequent and long-term traveling, I’ve come to a couple of conclusions.

First  – in most countries, you  will  stand out as a tourist, no matter what you wear. It will either be your facial features, your height, the way you look / speak / walk, or something else. So, just wear something that is weather appropriate and you feel comfortable in.

If it makes you feel better, I’m always mistaken for a tourist in my own country. Most people are very puzzled when they hear me speak Greek fluently! It used to annoy me, but I find it very amusing these days. 

Second  – if you have forgotten to bring something, you can usually buy something to replace it with. Sure, a few things like your smartphone are irreplaceable. It’s unlikely, however, that forgetting to bring your bottle of new perfume will spoil your holiday.

And with this in mind – ladies, leave your  hair straighteners  and  hair driers  behind. Yes, Greece is one of the best places to let your hair down!

Hello! I am jealous that you visited in the 70s! March in Milos is very, very quiet – and definitely not swimming weather. So it depends a lot on what you are after – if you want to relax, it would be good! For that time of year I would personally recommend Crete or Rhodes, as they are bigger islands and more restaurants etc will be open. We were in Santorini a few days ago and it was hard to find somewhere decent to eat 🙂 All in all, it’s best to visit Greece towards the end of March, after Portugal, better chances of good weather!

One of the ladies has friends on Santorini, so we’re all set for accommodations, travel, some other island hopping, etc. We’re driving around the Peloponnese areas for the first 10 days, can’t wait! My question is just something simple – when I’ve traveled in Europe, I’ve usually found street vendors selling “Pashmina” (not real) long scarves at cheap prices. Does that still happen and are those available in Greece, so we don’t have to pack any from home? I love the ones I’ve gotten in Europe over the years. For comparison, August’s average high is around 33ºC ,  while October in Corfu sees average highs of 23ºC, average lows of 18ºC, and an average sea temperature of 22ºC.

First things first — Corfu’s mountain ranges mean it sees more rain than other Greek islands in general. In addition, September sees quite an increase of rainfall in Corfu from the preceding months, with an average of 40mm over eight rainy days.

For context, July — the driest month in Corfu — sees just 9mm of rain.

That said, given that October sees an average of 120mm of rain across 11 rainy days, September remains relatively dry.

Though it’s true that Corfu captivates travellers around the year — thanks to its beautiful beaches, verdant mountains, tasty food and lively nightlife — September is an especially rewarding time to visit.

What to wear in Corfu in September

Though the daytime temperatures are hot enough for the likes of shorts, sun dresses, and swimwear for the beach — you’ll want to bring warmer clothes for the chillier evenings when temperatures drop to around 17C. Think cardigans, pullovers, long trousers and wraps.

You’ll also need to wear sun hats and sunscreen, and it’s also worth bringing a brolly and light waterproof jacket.

I spent 4 days in Athens, Greece. Here are 10 things that were worth it and 5 I'd skip next time.

• I recently spent four days in Athens, Greece, while traveling around Europe . 
• Stumbling upon the National Garden was a great treat, and I loved learning about the Acropolis. 
• On the other hand, I'm not sure the Roman Agora or Hadrian's Library are worth a visit . 

In October, I traveled to Athens, Greece , for the first time since I was 18 months old. 

I spent four days exploring some of the city's amazing landmarks and sites. But even though I didn't pay for all of the attractions — because some are free for EU citizens 25 and under — there are a few I wouldn't spend time on again. 

The Greek city just made Delta Air Line's list of most-searched summer destinations for 2024, so if you're currently planning a trip, here's everything that was worth the time and money and the few things I'd skip on my next trip.

I was glad I happened upon Athens National Garden.

I happened upon the National Garden kind of by accident when I was looking for some green space to run in. It's completely free and perfect for a walk, jog, or run.

The space is very peaceful and also has ponds with lots of turtles. I ended up going back a few days later to sit and read in the shade.

The Acropolis is definitely worth it, especially in the morning.

The Acropolis, which I'd consider the main tourist attraction in Athens, is a must-visit.

The citadel contains several ancient buildings, most notably the Parthenon. I was told to start waiting in line around 7:30 a.m. (it opens at 8), and it was well worth the time and effort.

It got busy — and hot — really quickly. I couldn't imagine going any later, and I ended up being able to take a nap afterward anyway. 

I wasn't too sure about Mount Lycabettus, but the views won me over.

I planned to go to Mount Lycabettus (the highest point in Athens) for sunset one night. I thought I'd allotted enough time, but everyone seemed to have the same idea since there was a huge line when I arrived.

Truthfully, I was a bit disappointed by the tram ride, and when I got to the top, I was overwhelmed by how many people there were. But the view made it worth it.

I ended up staying for dinner and had a delicious meal of Greek salad , moussaka, and white wine for about $16.

I'm so glad I paid to run along the track at Panathenaic Stadium.

The stadium is cool on its own — it dates back to 600 BC and is the only marble stadium in the world. But I went early in the morning, during the designated running hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m., and got to run around the track.

It's only about $10 to enter (I paid the student price of $5), and it was one of my favorite things I did on the trip.

Kerameikos Archaeological Site is one of the coolest cemeteries I've ever seen.

I had pretty low expectations going in having seen my fair share of cemeteries , but I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

The tombstones were pillar-shaped, and there were great views of the Parthenon.

If you're doing the Acropolis, make sure to swing through Plaka afterward.

It's worth walking around the neighborhood surrounding the Acropolis.

There are great taverns with traditional Greek food and places to buy all the souvenirs your heart desires. I really enjoyed wandering around and exploring some of the picturesque side streets.

Even after seeing the real deal, I got a lot out of the Acropolis Museum.

I'm not usually a big museum person, but the Acropolis Museum is definitely worth a visit.

I went after I'd already seen the landmark, and it gave me good context. It houses many artifacts that were excavated from the site, and beneath the museum is an in-progress excavation of ancient Athens.

Areopagus Hill provided stunning views for free.

Behind the Acropolis is a prominent rock outcropping. It can be a slippery and steep walk up, but the views of the Acropolis and the surrounding area are breathtaking.

Entrance to the hill and its surrounding park is also completely free.

I could feel the history at the Ancient Agora of Athens.

The Athenian Agora is one of the best-known examples of a traditional Greek meeting place. It had great views of the Acropolis and was beautifully adorned with trees and other ruins.

I was especially impressed by how well the Temple of Hephaestus was preserved. There's also a museum, and the second floor has a nice balcony where you can look out over the agora

I'm glad I swung by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Many of the attractions in Athens date back centuries, but the tomb is much more contemporary.

Dedicated to Greek soldiers killed in war, the tomb itself is visually quite simple. But there are guards that stand in traditional garb, which reminded me of Buckingham Palace .

It's also pretty central — right next to the National Garden — so I didn't have to go out of the way to see it.

Next time, I'd skip Monastiraki Flea Market and shop in Plaka instead.

I was excited to go to a flea market but was quite disappointed to find that this one didn't sell anything much different than the rows of stores in Plaka.

I will say that the square near the market had good views of the Parthenon, but I was able to see similar angles from other places in the city. 

After seeing the Athenian Agora, I'd skip the Roman Agora on future trips.

In contrast to the Athenian Agora, the Roman version wasn't much to write home about.

The gate at the front is kind of cool, but I think could just look from the outside instead of wasting time going in. 

Hadrian's Library didn't wow me.

I didn't find the "library" all that special.

The ruin isn't really a building, just pillars. And like the Roman Agora, you could easily just peek through the gates to get a good sense of the place.

I wanted to love the Temple of Zeus, but I was a little underwhelmed.

I was excited to see a temple devoted to the King of the Gods, but it was kind of disappointing.

To be fair, the temple was under construction when I went. But I felt that there wasn't a ton to look at regardless.

The Lyceum of Aristotle isn't all that exciting and it's far from everything else.

The original lyceum was destroyed. All that's left of it is a few ruins that were discovered about 30 years ago.

It's relatively new since it wasn't opened to the public until 2009, but I felt like it wasn't worth the walk since it was far from most of the other landmarks .

Greece Announces New Plan to Protect Some of Its Pristine Beaches

The government has pledged to crack down on rapid development, and on seaside businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom. But some residents and conservationists are unimpressed.

The Greek government on Friday published a list of 198 “untrodden beaches” that it said are now off limits to bars, restaurants and large public gatherings in its latest attempt to contain development and address the backlash to the throngs of tourists that descend on the country’s coastlines each year.

The move comes amid growing frustration among residents of Greek islands and parts of the coastal mainland that are popular with foreign visitors. Protests ballooned into a nationwide “beach towel movement” last summer as disgruntled locals complained that they were being pushed off their own beaches by businesses seeking to take advantage of a tourist boom that brought more than 32 million foreign visitors to Greece last year .

On the country’s Cycladic islands, local residents joined forces with the authorities to push back against a wave of construction .

Greece’s conservative government has pledged to crack down on the development, and on seaside businesses that violate regulations. In February it passed a law aimed at regulating the use of the country’s coastline, imposing penalties of up to 60,000 euros for businesses occupying more than 50 percent of Greek beaches with umbrellas and sun beds.

Critics said the law did not go far enough to curb the problem, with some claiming that the government was perpetuating the issue by not tackling illegal land use more comprehensively.

The list of “untrodden beaches,” unveiled in a joint agreement between Greece’s finance and environment ministers, is part of a broader effort to restore balance, the government said. “The main goal is to combine environmental protection with sustainable development,” Kostis Hatzidakis, the economy and finance minister, said on Friday.

“The environment is a valuable component of the Greek tourist product,” he said.

Under the new initiative, the government was putting public assets “under a strict framework of rules, penalties and obligations,” Mr. Hatzidakis said. Inspections and transparency would be increased, as would “the enforcement of the law,” he added.

The beaches on the list are in areas included in the European Union’s Natura program, a network of vulnerable habitats across Europe that are protected under European law. Among the beaches listed on Friday are spots on popular islands such as Milos, Naxos, Lesbos, Samothrace and in the southern Peloponnese peninsula.

The islands were selected based on the advice of the country’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and are all “areas of high ecological importance,” Theodoros Skylakakis, the environment and energy minister, said on Friday.

Under the new initiative, no section of those beaches can be auctioned off for commercial use, and the presence of sun-loungers and umbrellas will be prohibited, as will the organization of public events involving more than 10 people.

Another initiative being introduced by the government is a new app called “MyCoast,” on which people can report violations.

Some environmentalists in Greece were not impressed by Friday’s announcement. Eleni Andrianopoulou, a resident of Naxos and a member of a local “Save the beaches” group, said the government’s original plan had been for more than 1,000 beaches nationwide to be covered, adding that Natura areas require “real protection.”

“From the beginning we had stressed that this reform for untrodden beaches was a fraud.”

Demetre Karavellas, director of the World Wildlife Fund Greece, said the authorities were jumping the gun with their list of pristine beaches, noting that there are more than 100 marine and coastal areas in Greece that are recognized by the Natura program but have yet to be effectively managed or conserved.

“The government should start by complying with its basic legal obligations before creating new vague categories of protection,” he said.
