A late-night food truck camera appeared to show 2 of the Idaho victims hours before they were found dead

MOSCOW, Idaho — A livestream from a late-night food truck appears to have recorded two college students ordering food hours before authorities found them and two others fatally stabbed at an off-campus home , video obtained Wednesday by NBC News shows.

The video appears to show the University of Idaho students ordering “mac of the week” and carbonara at the food truck amid a rush of customers early Sunday. The livestream was broadcast on the platform Twitch by Grub Wandering Kitchen, which owns the food truck.

Joseph Woodall, who manages the truck, said they appear to have been there between 1:30 a.m. and 1:40 a.m.

Woodall described the downtown food truck as one of Moscow’s only late-night options for hospital workers and students going to house parties or bars.

It is not clear where the pair went after they left the area, roughly 10 minutes after they appear to have arrived. Moscow Police Chief James Fry told reporters Wednesday that the four victims —  Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21 — were most likely killed in the "early morning hours" Sunday.

Fry did not identify which two victims were seen in the video. He said the livestream had helped provide investigators with “a time and space where two of our victims were.”

NBC News has not identified which victims were apparently seen in the video.

Two of the victims — Chapin and his girlfriend, Kernodle — had been at a party that night, Fry said. Mogen and Goncalves had been at a downtown bar. Fry said the four friends arrived at the off-campus home where they were found slain after 1:45 a.m.

Kernodle, Mogen and Goncalves lived at the house, which is about a mile from the food truck, said a neighbor and friend of Chapin's, Ellie McKnight.

Authorities found their bodies after a 911 caller reported an "unconscious" person just before noon Sunday, police have said. No suspect has been identified, and the murder weapon has not been found.

Investigators have found no evidence of forced entry, Fry said.

Authorities believe that two other roommates who also lived at the home were there when the killings occurred and that they were not injured. Fry declined to provide additional details about the roommates, citing the investigation, and he said he did not know why no one called 911 until 11:58 a.m.

"Wouldn’t we love for that to have happened?" he told reporters. "Yes. But that’s not how it took place. So we’re — that’s why we’re investigating everything still to try to pull all the pieces together."

Autopsies are expected to be completed this week, police have said.

The video surfaced as Fry walked back previous comments that there is no ongoing threat after victims' families criticized how authorities have handled the investigation.

Long live the Grub Truck in Moscow! My absolute favorite Mac n cheese is featured for the month (red wine and steak) and a raspberry brownie! I was the first in line with a following that the Pied Piper would envy Open 10:00-2:30 am. BEST MAC N CHEESE!! I buy it and prep it up for a few meals for the weekend. Love the college town vibe during the academic year and more of the family vibe during the summer hours!

Just order the original Mac and cheese. It is delicious and perfect. The line can be a bit long, but it is worth it. One order can probably feed two people, but I usually just order one for myself. WARNING: if you get a non-original flavor, they add a ton of the toppings and you might be overwhelmed, e.g. if you order the barbecue, there will be A LOT of barbecue sauce in your Mac and cheese. This is probably intentional and simply up to your personal taste, so consider carefully. Also watch them on Twitch.

5 Cheese Mac topped w/ Bacon

Grub truck has some of the best mac and cheese. I recommend the BBQ chicken mac and cheese. Death by garlic is also good. Their prices are very reasonable and you get a good amount of food. Also, I recommend getting there right when they open to avoid the lines. The wait for food isn't very long even if there is a line. The staff is very friendly.

Mac 'n' cheese? Delicious. They always remember customers and are super friendly and accommodating! Tacos? AMAZING. People know them for the pasta but they actually have the best tacos around. If I could give them a 10 out of 5 I would.

Best food truck in all existence of food trucks. Every time I try to get something different but the Mac'n'cheeses never ever disappoint. Still dream about the rice crispy treats with pistachios in them. Basically you haven't lived until you've experienced this food!

Great hot spot to go to if you're ever in Moscow late. john gives the best service. Is always in a great mood and serves amazing food. Recommend getting the Four Cheese with bacon but all of the food is great.

I have always been a critic of mac n cheese. I try them everywhere and found only a few that live up to my expectations. Grub Truck will be the In N Out to my Idaho visits. I will have to come get some grub. Some of the best mac n cheese put there. Try the Chipotle!

YUM, YUM, YUM! Such a fun atmosphere & the food in unmatchable! You can't go wrong with the Mac - all of them but my favorite item is the chicken tacos, just enough to satisfy a taste and not feel guilty of the rich cheese. Giving in to the guilt is also worth it, the dessert burrito too. Workers are always in a good mood & the live stream on twitch makes things interesting!

Slain Idaho Students Appear to Be Seen on Twitch Video at Food Truck Hours Before They Were Murdered

Four University of Idaho students were found stabbed to death in an off-campus home on Sunday. No suspects have been named or arrested at this time

As investigators piece together a timeline of the hours leading up to the killings of four University of Idaho students , two of the victims appear to be seen ordering food from a late-night food truck in a livestream video.

In the video, which was has been shared widely on social media , it appears that Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves order food from the truck. The video was broadcast on Twitch — a live-streaming platform — by Grub Wandering Kitchen, which owns the food truck, NBC News reports.

After waiting for the food for around 10 minutes, the two women — who are believed to be Mogen and Goncalves — leave the area. When they leave, an unidentified person who appeared to arrive at the food truck with the two women, but did not order food, raises his hand in their direction, then also walks out of frame quickly.

During a Wednesday press conference, Moscow Police Chief James Fry said authorities are aware of the video — and said it has helped in the investigation.

"It gives us a time and space that we knew where two of our victims were, and that helps us a ton and we'll continue to follow up all leads we can and continue to gather those," Fry said.

The food truck manager, Joseph Woodall, told CNN that the two women did not seem to be in distress or danger when he saw them.

Around noon on Sunday, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, were found dead from apparent stab wounds in an off-campus apartment.

No suspects have been named or arrested at this time.

Fry said that before the killings, Chapin and Kernodle were at a party on campus while Mogen and Goncalves were at a bar downtown. They all returned home around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, police said, and their bodies were discovered around noon after a call came in about an unconscious person at the residence.

Two additional roommates were home during the attack but were unharmed, Fry said, but he declined to label them as witnesses. Fry said there was no sign of forced entry at the apartment, and nothing was missing from the home.

Chapin did not live at the home, but was sleeping over with his girlfriend Kernodle, Chapin's mother Stacy Chapin told KING 5 .

Fry also walked back earlier statements by authorities that said there was no threat to the public because this was an "isolated, targeted attack."

"We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there," Fry said during the news conference. "We cannot say there is no threat to the community."

He stressed that the community should "remain vigilant."

The Moscow Police Department is asking anyone who may have information about the killings to call 208-883-7054.

In the video posted to Twitch — an online platform for livestreamed events — Mogen and Goncalves stand in line to order food from Grub Wandering Kitchen's food truck, dubbed the "Grub Truck," and talk with friends standing nearby in Friendship Square in Moscow, Idaho .

The Moscow Police Department is reviewing the footage, which was reportedly taken just hours before the murders, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson told The Associated Press. 

The four students' deaths have been ruled homicides, and while "no weapons have been located, based on preliminary information, investigators believe that an edged weapon such as a knife was used" in the attack, Moscow police said in a Tuesday statement.

Police on Sunday responded to reports of an unconscious person on King Road — adjacent to Greek Row — around noon and found the four deceased students upon arrival.

The department and school officials later issued statements saying there was no immediate threat to the community, though authorities do not have any suspects in custody.

The other two victims of the attack are Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle.

The students' autopsies are scheduled to be completed later this week, at which point police will "hopefully provide more definitive information on the exact cause of the deaths," MPD said.

Police said that "based on information from the preliminary investigation, investigators believe this was an isolated, targeted attack and there is no imminent threat to the community at large."

Grub Wandering Kitchen, also known as Grub Truck, has been serving the city of Moscow since 2013. But owner John Fletcher had a rocky road to travel before it's opening.

"I had just had my second restaurant fail miserably up in Spokane so I was broke," said Fletcher.

Broke, back at square one working for a friend at South Fork restaurant in Pullman, and a whole lot of adversity of face. But as you've probably heard, out of adversity comes opportunity.

"I found a box truck on craigslist for fifteen hundred bucks, I just kind of bought it on a whim. Two years, two months later I had it finished so...that's what I could do. You know wasn't so much a choice but like if I wanted to stay in the industry, stay an owner I had to scale down," explained Fletcher.

A mobile food truck seems like the perfect recipe for operating during a pandemic, but not necessarily.

Fletcher noted, "Well we decided to close down for the couple months that the bars were closed."

Grub truck parks right outside of the Garden Lounge in Moscow targeting late night bar-goer's passing by as his customers, but John wasn't in as much of a rush to re-open as other small business owners.

"Honestly I feel a little guilty about trying to like you know slam my business over the top during these times. You know I don't want to try and talk people into going out when they don't want to be out in public," said Fletcher.

With this in mind, after Grub Truck shut down for four month, John made sure to make everyone feel as safe as possible.

"We've also required masks from everyone who stops by. Because even though it is outdoors, once you're up there paying your face is about a foot or two from the cashier's face so six or eight hundred people come through over a course of a week, that makes the cashier feel pretty unsafe," added Fletcher.

After experiencing going out of business with one of his restaurants, which went under during the recession, John learned his lesson and was prepared for whatever the pandemic was going to bring this time around. He survived this time because...

"Probably you know keep a good cash reserve. And yeah don't live to close to the edge of your means financially," concluded Fletcher.

The North Idaho mobile food scene continues to evolve, with plenty of new trucks, locations and ways of reaching customers

Just as food trucks have given Inland Northwest diners an even broader range of options, food truck owners, too, have many options to reach them as the industry continues to evolve.

Some food trucks, like the 10-year-old, bright yellow Best Sandwich Shack in Coeur d'Alene, install themselves so as to appear permanent. The restaurant on wheels can always be found parked next to Best Avenue Food Court (510 E. Best Ave.).

Some trucks have a symbiotic relationship with their mothership, like Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese, which has both a brick-and-mortar in Coeur d'Alene (1735 W. Kathleen Ave.) and mobile operation that can reach diners outside that footprint. Others, like Meyer's Gourmet Sandwiches, spend summers at numerous locations, many of which don't serve food, like Up North Distillery and Slate Creek Brewing.

Come this fall, however, both roving and semi-stationary North Idaho food trucks will have a new place to go. Prairie Pavilion is an efficiently designed food truck court on Coeur d'Alene's north end that just might prompt other vendors to ask, "Should I stay or should I go?"

Prairie Pavilion (7777 Heartland Dr.) features 39 parking spots, room for 13 food trucks and a covered, semi-enclosed eating area with rollup doors for warmer weather and a heater for winter. The park also offers necessary water, sewer and grease hookups, along with garbage and recycling, as well as a highly valued feature: a restroom.

The restroom is one of the few features still underway before a soft opening later this month, co-owner Kym Nagel says. She and husband Nate teamed up with Jason and Laura Quast, who own the local Jitterz Espresso franchise (also getting a new drive-through at Prairie Pavilion), to open the new location. It will feature new and existing food trucks, some of which the Nagels became familiar with through their other business, Premier Auction House in Post Falls.

"There are literally 10 housing developments around [here]," says Nagel, who hopes Prairie Pavilion can capitalize on increased traffic from housing and commercial businesses along Coeur d'Alene's northwestern border with Hayden and Post Falls.

Vendors scheduled to semi-permanently set up at the pavilion include a mixture of veterans like Taco Works — Nagel notes that people refer to its longtime owner Omar Magdalena as "the godfather" — and newbies like Eat Fit, which offers vegan, vegetarian, keto and paleo meals.

Also new: Big Daddy's Treats' Louisiana-style bread pudding and other sweets; Curry Shack's Japanese curry and Casey's Smoke Shack, which specializes in ribs, smoked tri-tip Philly cheesesteaks and the like.

Rustic (309 E. Sherman Ave., Coeur d'Alene) and Messy's Burgers (6285 Maine St., Spirit Lake), both of which have permanent locations, also plan to be represented at Prairie Pavilion with mobile units.

Mad Moose Concession, meanwhile, is leaving the Best Avenue food court for the new site. At Best Avenue, Mad Moose Concession worked alongside fellow mobile kitchens Left Coast Fusion, Taco Works, RawDeadFish and Judi's Joint, the latter of which is new-ish to Coeur d'Alene, relocating from Silver Valley.

Mad Moose polled its customers, chef/owner Nicole DeFrehn says, and discovered that most hail from north of Coeur d'Alene's city center, prompting her to relocate the truck to better connect with its regulars.

So why, in the first place, would a business owner pick a food truck over brick-and-mortar?

"Initial investment, overall cost and keeping overhead down, and the ability to be mobile," says DeFrehn, who's been cooking since 2001. That means keeping the menu small and focused — try the truck's eggs benedict with homemade buttermilk biscuits ($9.50) or the Mad Bundle ($5.75) of egg, sausage and cheese wrapped in fry bread and fried — which means a small inventory, too.

While some trucks like the security of a dedicated spot, others tend to move around more, going where the people are, and especially to drinking establishments.

Post Falls Brewing, for example, hosts several regular trucks, including D.A.T. Bella Moon's BBQ, which serves up half-pound pulled pork sliders ($3), brisket, ribs and more every Monday. Junior's BBQ sets up shop there on Tuesday, while Pi-Daho Artisan Pizza covers Wednesday through Sunday, serving its 10 to 14-inch pizzas ($9-$15) like the Moscow, with prosciutto, pineapple and fresh basil.

M eanwhile, down south in Moscow , Grub Wandering Kitchen, aka "the Grub Truck," is typically parked outside the Garden Lounge (313 S. Main St.), even though summer means around a 50 percent dropoff in foot traffic, owner John Fletcher says. Its macaroni and cheese ($6-$9), with options like truffles, habanero and fresh garlic, is the truck's most popular dish, says Fletcher, who's run the truck since 2013.

Farther north in Sandpoint, food trucks are concentrated in several areas. Ohn's Thai Plate is a longtime anchor at the small Oak Street Court (317 Oak St.), recently joined by La Catrina Cocina and newbie Green Go's Fusion Food serving burritos and tacos with grass-fed beef and organic produce. Soul Picnic, which is near Evans Brothers Coffee (524 Church St.), has been serving up veggie-forward items like their southwest rice bowl ($9) since 2016.

Sandpoint Curry, which used to be an order-and-pickup place initially marketed as Curry in a Hurry, now splits time between a fledgling food truck court called 7Bistro (870B Kootenai Cutoff Rd.), which also houses Taco Tacos, and serving at area businesses, such as MickDuff's Brewing.

Newcomers to Sandpoint's food truck scene include Heart Bowls, offering smoothies ($5-$9) and rice milk and banana "mylkshakes" ($5.50). Heart Bowls is currently parked outside of what's expected to be an all-day café called the Longshot on South Boyer.

Also new, Shilla - Korean BBQ with Seoul has taken the favored approach of going where the people are, teaming up with the uber-popular 219 Lounge (219 N. First Ave.) to offer things like potstickers ($7/five) and skewers of chicken, ribs or pork belly ($6/two).

"Shilla provides our customers and others with a unique dining experience for lunch and late night dining," 219 owner Melvin Dick says. "It is a win-win for both parties. We have a great location with a lot of events and music going on, which attract crowds."

Finally, for those wondering why we're just now mentioning food trucks that have been around for a few years, the biggest reason is their inherent mobile nature. Sometimes we have them on our radar only to discover they've moved to focus on serving a new area, like Sandpoint's Twisted Kilt Black Iron Grill, which posts its location on social media and serves sweet and savory cornbread waffles. Or we just haven't heard about them yet, like I Don't Care Asian Food Truck (7352 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene), as well as a potential handful of others we'll have to catch up on in the next food truck roundup. ♦
