FAQ - Overnights

I don't have any gear. Is that a problem? No! Blue Ridge Hiking Company can provide tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, backpacks, and trekking poles. We also have group gear like water filters, stoves, cookware, rope, maps and a compass. Hikers are responsible for bringing personal items listed on the General Information PDF but we handle the rest!

How many miles will we hike each day?  That's up to you! Private groups customize their mileage to fit their needs. We want to work with all body types and experience levels (our mission is to make the wilderness accessible, after all!). That said, group trips usually cover 6-12 miles a day over moderate terrain. We also offer beginner group trips with lower mileage days and intermediate to advanced trips with higher mileage.

Do I have to have a certain level of fitness to participate?  Yes and no. We welcome all fitness levels! But to hike in the mountains and carry a pack comfortably , you should at least be able to walk several miles in your neighborhood without taking a break. Our trips can cover rugged, up-and-down terrain that is often times more difficult than an easy, flat "walk in the park." So the more in shape you are, the easier it'll be. That said, the majority of our trips are suitable for beginner to intermediate hikers. And our private backpacking trips can be customized for any fitness level. For more information about how to choose the right backpacking trip, see our Trip Difficulty page.

What can I do to get in shape?  Simply taking a walk while wearing a backpack (with something heavy in it!) can help quite a bit. If you're a "flatlander" (Florida, anyone?) and are concerned about elevation gain and loss, try climbing flights of stairs on your lunch break or hop on a stairmaster at your local gym. As the saying goes, "proper preparation prevents poor performance." That's as true in the Blue Ridge as in the board room.  What about food?  We have food! Blue Ridge Hiking Company provides plenty of food on our overnight trips. We offer an array of standard backpacking fair including dehydrated meals, dried fruits and nuts, granola bars, oatmeal, you name it. We pack fresh fruit and veggies for snacks, there's always a treat for your after dinner sweet tooth and yes! We have instant coffee for breakfast. We're also happy to accommodate dietary restrictions and preference whenever possible. Just give us a heads up in advance. (stopped here)

What if I'm still not sure what to pack?  Before each Blue Ridge Hiking Company overnight the guide offers a "shakedown" to make sure you have all the necessary items in your pack. They may recommend that you leave any unnecessary personal items behind. Carrying too much weight in your backpack can increase your risk of injury. The General Information PDF offers a comprehensive packing list.

Do I tip my guide?  Our team of well-trained professional guides never expects but always appreciates a tip!  Industry standard gratuity for a guided backpacking trip is 15-20% of the trip cost.

What is your COVID policy? The health and safety of our guides and hikers is our highest priority.  If you experience COVID-like symptoms or have contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID within ten days before you trip, please don't come!  We will work with you to reschedule or refund your trip.  While we don't have any specific COVID policies in place for our Group Trips, we are happy to implement safety precautions on your Private Trip.  If you have additional questions or would like us to take specific safety precautions for your trip, please contact us via phone (828-713-5451) or email ([email protected]).

What is your cancellation policy for overnight trips? The trip costs includes a 15% non-refundable administrative fee. Hikes may be rescheduled once free of charge; a rescheduling fee will apply if hikes are rescheduled additional times. Hikes may be cancelled up to 2 weeks before the trip for a refund (minus the 15% fee). Within 2 weeks, a 50% refund will be offered. Within 48 hours, a refund will only be offered if Blue Ridge Hiking Company cancels the trip due to severe weather.

What happens if it rains? We hike rain or shine! Sometimes, thunderstorms, ice, snow, or extreme cold may be considered severe weather. In these circumstances, we may change trip itinerary or cancel the trip.

Your Ultimate Guide to Pull Off a Weekend Backpacking Trip

These short-but-sweet hikes are the perfect microadventure for busy people. Here’s how to tackle them.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the Outside app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

While America’s long-distance treks top adventure bucket lists, months-long stints on the Appalachian, Continental Divide, or Pacific Crest trails may not go over well with your day job. That’s where microadventure-style  backpacking trips can give you a taste of life in the wild.

Here are seven short-and-sweet weekend trips that pack in scenery, solitude, and adventure, sans extended vacation. Plus: how to pack and plan for your adventure.

What Should I Pack for a Weekend Backpacking Trip?

Strategizing supplies and gear—and how to pack it all—can feel like a mental mountain climb. To help you simplify this step, we talked backpacking kits with Chloe Childs, operations manager at professional mountain-guiding service Aspen Expeditions. Her overarching advice: test before you buy. “There was a backpack I thought I was going to buy, then I went into the store and it absolutely did not fit me,” Childs says. “Try everything on. It’s obviously going to be a little uncomfortable at first, or just feel different, but it shouldn’t hurt you.”

Read on for Childs’s weekend must-haves, and keep our ultimate backpacking checklist handy to compare and contrast your kit options.

  • Backpack : Look for at least 40- or 50-liter capacity in a weekend-sized backpack, and buy a rain cover (or a pack that comes with one). Bring extra dry bags for fragile items, such as your phone.
  • Sleeping equipment : Overnighting needs include a tent and rain fly, tent poles and stakes, a sleeping bag, and a sleeping pad (do not forget the sleeping pad). If it’s your first time, make sure to set up and break down your tent and sleeping gear at home first, Childs says.
  • Hydration : Pack a water bottle or reservoir, and a water filtration system, such as a pump, squeeze, or gravity device, plus tablets for backup. Try electrolyte tablets, such as Nuun, for extra hydration.
  • Food : Make a food plan , with adequate meals and easy-to-eat snacks, such as jerky, fruit snacks, or gels. Childs recommends creating a spreadsheet to tally quantities. For freeze-dried meals, you’ll need a camp stove and fuel, as well as waterproof matches or a lighter, cookware, utensils, and cleaning gear. Check local regulations for campfire and food-storage requirements, too.
  • Clothing : Aim for a simple hiking wardrobe: underwear, socks, shorts, pants, T-shirts, an insulating layer, a rain jacket, beanie, sun hat, and sunglasses, depending on the season. “For the most part, you’ll wear the same [thing] every day,” says Childs. “One extra change and a lot of socks are great.” Hiking boots are also a must; test them well before your trip. If space allows, pack camp shoes to give your toes a break when you’re not hiking.
  • Toiletries : Like any vacation, pack the toiletries you need for personal hygiene, but don’t go overboard. Think: hand sanitizer, sunscreen, toothbrush, bug repellent, and, to poop outdoors (responsibly!) ,  a trowel, toilet paper, and waste bags.
  • Electronics : Bring a headlamp, power bank, satellite phone or personal locator beacon, and spare batteries, Childs says. For safety, have a map downloaded on your phone via an app like Gaia GPS . Don’t forget a laminated paper map of the region, too.
  • Emergency : Pack a first-aid kit, as well as duct tape, medications, moleskin, a multitool, and a fire starter.

Tips to Plan a Brief Backpacking Trip

Preparation is just as important as gear. Heed Childs’s advice:

  • Read the forums : Whether you look at local hiking forums or dedicated backpacking Facebook groups, Childs says online hiking communities are essential for monitoring conditions, potential restrictions, permitting, water availability, guidelines like how far to sleep from water, and trailhead parking.
  • Do a dry run : That pile of gear may look like an easy fit, but you won’t know if it works until you try—and you want to try before you hit the trail. “Unpack and repack at least once or twice so you’re not doing it for the first time in the backcountry,” Childs says. Additionally, experiment with packing cubes to stay organized.
  • Remember elevation : A ten-mile hike in the Great Lakes feels different than a ten-mile hike in the Rockies. Know your fitness, and pay attention to both mileage and elevation gain, says Childs. “Look at where you’re starting, then how much you’re gaining and losing.”
  • Seek guidance : If this is your first time backpacking, consider joining a class at your local outdoor retailer or head out on a weekend outing with a guide to learn the ropes, Childs says. “It’s nice to go with a guide even for one night to see how everything is done—how they set up or make food. It’s all these things you don’t think about.”
  • Leave No Trace : Before your trip begins, study Leave No Trace’s seven principles for responsible outdoor adventures, including proper waste disposal, campfire safety, and respecting wildlife.
  • Stay fueled : Plan to make proper eating and drinking a priority on the trail. “A good rule of thumb: If you’re stopping, take a drink and eat some snacks,” she says, noting small snacks to keep your blood sugar up are integral to avoid crashing.

The 7 Best Weekend Backpacking Trips in the U.S.

Four pass loop: maroon bells-snowmass wilderness area, colorado.

Maroon Bells and Lake at sunrise Colorado

  • Mileage: 26 miles, loop
  • Elevation gain: 8,000 feet
  • Days required: 3 to 5 days
  • Permit required: Yes

Childs’ favorite Colorado weekend backpacking adventure is the Four Pass Loop , a traverse through the towering pines and peak-reflecting lakes of Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area near Aspen. This 26-mile route is no walk in the park. It gains 8,000 feet of elevation from the trailhead near Maroon Lake and crosses four mountain passes that exceed 12,000 feet. It’s a quad-killer, best completed from July to September, but it’s worth the lactic-acid onslaught. In addition to alpine scenery, backpackers could spot elk, moose, mountain goats, and black bears (so bring bear spray), not to mention colorful wildflowers that dot the slopes.

The Enchantments Traverse: Enchantment Area Wilderness, Washington

Dragontail Peak along The Enchantment Traverse

  • Mileage: 18 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 4,500 feet
  • Days required: 2 to 3 days

Few weekend backpacking trails embody Pacific Northwest splendor like the Enchantments , an 18-mile adventure through central Washington’s larch-lined wilderness. The route, which starts via the Stuart Lake trailhead outside Bavaria-inspired Leavenworth, rolls by snow-flecked crag, mirror-still lakes, and roaming mountain goats. Some pursue the trek by day—a feat that takes a rough 10 to 15 hours—but for a milder and more immersive jaunt, wait to nab the permit for overnighting. When you do, follow the Forest Service’s guidance  to keep the flora and fauna, particularly its resident goats, safe.

Cirque of the Towers: Wind River Range, Wyoming

Cirque of the Towers Wind River Range Wyoming

  • Mileage: 24 miles, loop
  • Elevation gain: 3,900 feet
  • Days required: 3 to 4 days
  • Permit required: No

Cirque of the Towers looks like a postcard from Patagonia. But this amphitheater of craggy 12,000-foot fangs, and the still lakes that reflect them, can be found in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, located along the Continental Divide. A weekend backpacking trip along the Cirque of the Towers loop, which starts from Big Sandy Lake, provides the perfect landscape perch, not to mention a solid roughly 24-mile workout with nearly 4,000 feet of elevation gain. No permit is required, but backpackers are asked not to camp within a quarter-mile of Lonesome Lake. The trail starts at the Big Sandy Trailhead, just over 50 miles from Pinedale, Wyoming.

Lost Coast Trail: King Range National Conservation Area, California

Mattole Beach in King Range National Conservation Area California

  • Mileage: 24.6 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: ~50 feet

It may be a waterfront trek with minimal elevation gain, but the Lost Coast Trail in northern California is much more than a beach saunter. This challenging and roughly 25-mile outing traverses boulders, pebbles, and sand—with the challenge of unpredictable waves and weather that requires hypervigilant planning and monitoring. The reward? Three to four days along this untamed California coastline. The Lost Coast’s stretch of the Pacific shoreline is so rugged that the state veered its coastal Highway 1 inland here. Hiking is one of the only ways to reach the patchwork of pines-meet-the-sea scenery, with black-sand beaches, wildflower-dotted hills, and sea lions and elephant seals adding entertainment to the trail. Your north-to-south trip begins at Mattole Beach in Humboldt County. A permit is required for overnighting, and campsites abound along the trail. Book the shuttle back to the parking area from the trail terminus, black sand beach in Shelter Cove.

Greenstone Ridge Trail: Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Lookout Louise Isle Royale National Park

  • Mileage: 42 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 4,320 feet
  • Days required: 5 to 8 days

Hit the pine-flanked spine of Isle Royale National Park for a long weekend, or weeklong, adventure on Lake Superior. The 42-mile Greenstone Ridge Trail runs the length of the island, from Windigo Harbor in the west to Rock Harbor in the east. It’s a treat of topography, with forest jaunts, rocky climbs, boulder-dashed shores, and makeshift bridges through marsh and swamplands that keep you on your toes. Moose sightings only add to the thrill, while echoing loon calls by the waterfront campgrounds put a soothing cap on your backcountry day. Given the remoteness, you’ll need a multi-hour ferry ride or seaplane from Copper Harbor, Michigan, or Grand Portage, Minnesota, to even reach the trailhead. If your vacation days don’t allow for a full Isle Royale traverse, stitch together closer campsites, such as a three-day out-and-back from Rock Harbor to Moskey Basin. The national park is open from mid-April through October. Plus, here’s our best packing advice for Isle Royale .

Art Loeb Trail: Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina

Orange Tent Along the Art Loeb Trail in North Carolina

  • Mileage: 30.1 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 9,000 feet
  • Days required: 2 to 5 days

Admire Pisgah National Forest’s Appalachian balds and deep-green panoramas via the Art Loeb Trail , a 30-mile point-to-point route 40-some minutes south of Asheville. The trail meanders along rocky ridges and over four 6,000-foot peaks, including 6,214-foot Black Balsam Knob, with stints near the lush Davidson River valley and Blue Ridge Parkway. No permit is necessary for this North Carolina outing, but you will need bear canisters. Additionally, campfires are prohibited. Visit in the summer for a verdant wonderland, or autumn for an eye-popping palette of yellow pines and cherry-hued hemlocks.

Devil’s Path Trail: Catskill Park, New York

Devils Path Hiking Trail in the Catskill Mountains

  • Mileage: 25.2 miles, point-to-point
  • Elevation gain: 8,500 feet

As the trail name alludes, the Castkills’ Devil’s Path is challenging. The 25-mile out-and-back path crosses five of the region’s high peaks: Indian Head, Plateau, Twin, Sugarloaf, and West Kill, which are all above 3,500 feet. This red-blaze adventure begins at the Prediger Trailhead, roughly two hours driving from Manhattan. You’ll tackle loose rock, scrambling, and aggravating false summits throughout, but the pain is well worth the gain. The Devil’s Path features some of the best Catskills vistas, with pine-dotted peaks, hills unfurling to the horizon, and solitude you may not expect to find within 120 miles of the Big Apple.

This 3 day / 2 night guided backpacking trip is perfect for beginners or first time backpackers! You'll hike alongside an experienced backpacking guide for approximately 15 miles over the course of 3 days on the Appalachian Trail. Explore the beautiful rolling hills, wide-open mountain views, and winding woodland trails of the Appalachian Mountains along the TN/NC border, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.  Start the hike by soaking in the 360 degree mountain views from a series of wildflower covered, grassy mountain balds of the Roan Highlands, then camp in a tent overnight under the stars.  The next day, wake up to the sounds of nature and then hike over another mountain bald before descending into the woodlands below, where you’ll see an abundance of flora and fauna native to southern Appalachia.  You’ll camp a second night, and finish the hike on the third day with a series of small creek crossings.  You’ll learn how to set up camp, filter water, cook meals, and practice safe backpacking skills with your guide.  Trip includes full gear rental (a comfortable backpack, trekking poles, tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and cook kit), breakfast and dinners during the trip, shuttle service to trail heads, and a video orientation before the trip to discuss planning and preparation.

A minimum of 2 hikers is required for this trip to run. If the minimum has not been met, we will contact you 2 weeks before the start of the trip to discuss options.

guided backpacking trips for beginners near me

  • Day 1: Orientation and Hike (5-7 miles) : Meet in Roan Mountain, TN around 9 am and get fitted for a backpack and gear, and shuttle to the trail head near Carver’s Gap.  Then we’ll hike over the first few mountain balds and soak in the incredible views!  We’ll stop for lunch halfway and take a break to filter water.  After a few hours, we’ll get to the first campsite where we will set up tents, cook dinner, and settle in for the night.
  • Day 2: Hike and Camp (6-9 miles): We’ll make breakfast, break down camp, and make our way through the forests to the next set of mountain balds, with their grassy, wildflower covered summits. We will stop for lunch and take breaks along the way, then set up camp for the night. We may wind down with some games or a campfire before heading to bed in our tents.
  • Day 3: Hike Out (3 miles): The last day is short, so we can sleep in a bit before we make breakfast, break down camp, and finish the hike.  This day is mostly downhill, through the winding forest trail and past a few creeks.  We’ll finish the trip back at our cars around noon.

Daily mileage may vary.  Your guide may make adjustments to the itinerary to best fit the group's needs and experience level.

What to Bring:

Your guide will provide you with a detailed gear checklist a few weeks before your trip that’s tailored to your trip location and expected weather.  You’ll be expected to bring your own clothing, footwear, and personal items such as medications.  You will also have the opportunity to ask specific gear questions during your Pre-Hike Virtual Orientation with your guide.  Here are some general guidelines for your gear:

  • Clothing:  You’ll need a system of layering for your backpacking clothes.  Remember that cotton kills!  Cotton clothing has a tendency to absorb water, become heavy and uncomfortable, and takes a long time to dry!  Athletic clothes with breathable fabrics are much better.  You won’t need to bring a clean set of clothing for each day.  Instead, you’ll want to pack an outfit for hiking, an outfit for sleeping, a warm layer, and a rain jacket.  An extra pair of socks and underwear are a good idea, too.
  • Shoes :  Generally, a pair of comfortable running shoes or trail shoes are better suited for the terrain and weather of the Appalachian Mountains than heavy hiking boots.  Many backpackers also choose to bring a pair of lightweight sandals or camp shoes to wear in the evenings.  Whatever you wear, make sure to test them out at home before bringing them on a week-long trip!
  • Toiletries:   Toilet paper, toothbrush and toothpaste, a small bottle of soap, and hand sanitizer are all you need!  Leave the deodorant, make-up, hair products, lotions, and other scented items at home.  Embrace your natural self while backpacking!

Cancellation Policy:

  • Trip cost includes a non-refundable $150 booking deposit.  The remainder of the cost is due 1 week prior to the trip.  Trips may be canceled up to 1 week before the start date for a refund, minus the deposit.  Within 1 week of the trip, a 50% refund will be offered for cancellations.   No refunds will be offered for cancellations within 48 hours of the trip start date.
  • We hike rain or shine! Backpacking is a challenging endurance sport, and it can be uncomfortable during inclement weather.  We do our best to make sure hikers are adequately prepared for adverse weather.  However, safety is our biggest priority.  In the case of severe weather that could affect the safety of our hikers, our guides have the discretion to cancel a trip.  In this case, full refunds will be offered or vouchers given to reschedule.

Our guides work hard to provide you with excellent service, professional guidance, and a safe and memorable backpacking trip.  If you feel your guide has done an exceptional job, please consider showing your appreciation with a tip.  The industry standard for tipping backpacking guides is 15-20% the total cost of the trip.

Best 7 Beginner Backpacking Trips in California

There is no shortage of wilderness areas and public lands in the sunny state of California. The obvious consequence of this is that it can be pretty hard for an outdoor enthusiast to decide where to go next.

Table of Contents

Would you like to hike along the magnificent coastline of Point Reyes? Or do the epic granite domes of Yosemite sound like an even better destination?

If you’re a backpacking beginner and you’re looking for an ideal hiking trip in California, I’m here to help you out. I’m fully aware of the fact that all backpacking beginners not only want to immerse themselves in the wilderness but also enjoy unforgettable vistas.

Therefore, I’ve put together a list of the seven best trekking trails in California that are – for one reason or another – well-suited for backpacking beginners and which include spectacular sights and views.

How Do I Choose an Appropriate Trail For Me?

While it’s true that all people enter the world of backpacking with completely different fitness levels and skillsets, I’ve compiled a list of trails with an average hiking beginner in mind. All of these trails fit the following criteria:

  • You’ll be getting a lot of “bounce for the ounce”, whether in the form of lush meadows or alpine peaks.
  • Each of these adventures follows trails that are well-maintained. Boulder fields and other kinds of tricky terrain are not something you’ll have to worry about.
  • Another thing you won’t have to worry about is the extreme elevation gain. Moreover, you’ll be backpacking relatively low mileage for each trip’s length.

However, this kind of activity is never completely safe – if you want to have the best possible time during your backcountry adventure, make sure to prepare yourself accordingly.

1. Trans-Catalina Trail

Trans-Catalina Trail

Photo by Chris Hunkeler via Flickr (CC BY-SA 2.0)

  • Elevation gain/loss: 9,600 feet
  • Length: 4 – 5 days
  • Mileage: 38.5 miles roundtrip

As its name suggests, this wonderful trail crosses Catalina Island, which is one of the most astonishing rocky islands belonging to the state of California. With most of the trail not being sheltered by the sun, this particular trip is an ideal pick for an early-spring hike.

As you’re trekking past mysterious coves and majestic ridges, keep an eye out for the wildlife that roams the island, including bison. And at night, listen to the shore-crashing waves while beach-camping at the secluded Parson’s Landing campground.

What turns the Trans-Catalina Trail into an ideal choice for beginners who aren’t quite ready to give up on the amenities is the fact that this trip blends luxury island life with rugged backpacking. Quite interesting, wouldn’t you say?

Why is it Suitable for Beginners?

While the trail itself requires a bit of effort to be completed, the fact that it’s close to civilization turns it into a fantastic choice for the rookies. This is particularly true for those who have a high fitness level.

You’ll never be too far away from a town and you’ll even be able to purchase a fire starter, a bundle of firewood, and a water-stocked locker at one of the campsites, namely the aforementioned Parson’s Landing.

Another thing worth mentioning here is that the rangers can be found at most campsites, as well as that you’ll be passing multiple restaurants along the way. In my opinion, the best of them is at Airport-in-the-Sky and its name is DC-3 Grill. Buying food in places such as these is a great way to cut down on your backpack weight.

While the Trans-Catalina Trail can be somewhat steep, most of the trekking takes place on fire roads. In other words, you won’t have to deal with rough, uneven paths. The section that leads to Parson’s Landing is considered to be the most strenuous one.

If you’d like to make this journey as easy as possible, I would recommend setting up a basecamp at the campsite at Two Harbors and then just day-hiking to the aforementioned Parson’s Landing without carrying all of your stuff.

Permits & Logistics

Catalina campsites fill up quite quickly, so it’s extremely important to book everything in advance. During the weekends, there is a 2-night minimum at all campgrounds. However, you can easily waive this requirement by giving a call to the visitor center at Two Harbors.

You can obtain your free permit to walk this trail at the same place. Another place to get it would be in the town of Avalon, more precisely in the town’s Conservancy House. But even if you don’t pick up this free permit, you will still be able to hike the Trans-Catalina Trail as long as you have your camping reservation.

The fact that you’ll need to get to this island (and return from it) by ferry is probably the most unique aspect of this adventure. I recommend taking the San Pedro – Avalon ferry ride when going to the island and the Two Harbors – San Pedro ferry ride when returning from it.

2. Half Dome, Yosemite

Half Dome, Yosemite

  • Elevation gain/loss: 5,300 feet
  • Length: 3 days
  • Mileage: 16 miles out-and-back

Almost every person who has ever seen photos of the world-famous Yosemite National Park has also seen the magnificent Half Dome, a massive, curved monolith that’s located in the middle of the park.

While mountaineers congregate at the monolith’s vertical face, Half Dome’s rounded back is a great spot for day hikers. This is because it has a set of cables that allows backpackers to (relatively) easily get to the summit of this massive rock.

A lot of enthusiastic trekkers try to complete this adventure in a single day. However, in my opinion, a much more enjoyable way to tackle Half Dome as a backpacker would be to embark on an overnight journey and turn the whole thing into a sort of communal camping experience. Once you climb up to the top, you can get back to the camp and chill by the gorgeous Merced River.

Even though this exciting hiking trip feels like a genuine adventure, it is still one where you’ll be able to keep the daily mileage low. This is because it can be broken into a 3-day excursion, which is something I would definitely recommend doing if you’re a backpacking beginner.

It’s a classic itinerary that takes folks past world-famous Yosemite spots, such as Nevada Falls and Vernal Falls. On the second day of your journey, you’ll be able to leave the backpack behind and climb the cables mentioned above while carrying only your daypack. If you don’t have one, one of our top backpacks for the Camino will also serve you well in California.

One thing worth mentioning here is that those who decide to spend the night at the Little Yosemite Valley Camp can get up earlier and reach the summit before the crowds do.

A lot of hiking trails in this national park require hikers to carry bear canisters in order to protect their food. However, the campground I mentioned above – Little Yosemite Valley Park – will allow you to store your food in their own bear boxes. This completely removes the need to carry a heavy bear canister during your entire trekking adventure.

Unfortunately, Half Dome permits are all but easy to obtain. Therefore, maybe the best course of action for you would be to simply join a guided group hike. But if you still want to secure a permit for an unguided trip, you can totally do so – you only have to visit the website of the National Park Service and submit your application there.

Make sure to make a reservation as soon as you can. This is, after all, an incredibly popular hike. You will need to secure both a Half Dome permit (which costs $10 per one person) and a regular wilderness permit.

Another way to go about this would be to try to secure a “first-come, first-served” permit one day before your hike. Those who decide to approach the matter in this manner should definitely come up with a backup plan first, though. Keep in mind that the staff of the national park can always recommend you other hiking trails available on that day.

3. Point Reyes Coast Loop

Point Reyes, California

  • Elevation gain/loss: Varies
  • Length: 2 – 3 days
  • Mileage: 4 – 22 miles

One of the world’s most beautiful trekking destinations, the coastline of Central California provides outdoor enthusiasts with coastal bluffs, rolling meadows, and sandy beaches.

In Point Reyes National Seashore, trekkers traverse prolific forests and have plenty of opportunities to enjoy unforgettable vistas, particularly the ones offering views of the marvelous Pacific Ocean.

During your hike, you will also be able to spot a lot of regional wildlife, including shorebirds, elks, and elephant seals, among other animals. What makes the entire experience truly special is this very specific mix of misty hills and sunny beaches – it doesn’t get much more Californian than that.

One thing worth mentioning here is that a lot of folks like hiking the Bear Valley to Coast Camp Loop, but this particular trail is often closed due to frequent wildfires. While it’s still possible to access a lot of other Point Reyes campgrounds, such as Wildcat, Glen, and Coast, engaging in a loop hike is certainly a bit more challenging. You will need really good hiking shoes .

One of the best things about Point Reyes is that it’s quite close to San Francisco. In other words, this hiking spot can be quickly and effortlessly reached from a major metropolitan area.

Furthermore, the trail system of the Point Reyes National Seashore park allows everyone to easily create a short or long itinerary. Also, the area’s elevation profiles are quite mellow, particularly when compared to mountainous regions (the Yosemite National Park from above is a good example).

For the Point Reyes Coast Loop trail, you’ll only have to pack a backup purification system – each of the campgrounds has potable water. Another thing worth mentioning is that all trekkers also have access to food storage boxes, barbecues, and picnic tables.

Spending a night at one of Point Reyes’ campgrounds costs around $20 per person and everything can be reserved in advance. Make sure to pay a visit to the Bear Valley Visitor Center if you’re planning a last-minute trip – there, you’ll be able to see if there are any available walk-up sites. If you plan on camping, and not just backpacking, check out our wild camping checklist .

But still, I think that the best course of action would be to simply make the reservations in advance. This is particularly important if you’re planning to hike during holidays or during the weekend.

4. Tuolumne Meadows Area, Yosemite

Tuolomne River, California

  • Elevation gain/loss: 1,300 feet
  • Length: 3 – 4 days
  • Mileage: 20 miles roundtrip

The things that define Yosemite’s majestic Tuolomne area are pinnacle spires, dome-shaped mountains, and, of course, expansive green meadows. In the Grand Canon of Tuolomne, backcountry enthusiasts are able to see water flowing freely over the slabs of granite, creating spectacular cascades.

The best way to experience this area is to start the hike in Curry Village and then follow the Tuolomne River as flows through the gorgeous meadows until it reaches the spectacular Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne.

Make sure to check out the waterfalls in the region, namely the California Falls, Le Conte Falls, and the Waterwheel Falls. As their name suggests, the Waterwheel Falls are named so due to the “waterwheel” phenomenon, i.e. the water being ejected into the air while hitting the rocks.

While both the Half-Dome trip I described above and this particular multi-day journey both take place in Yosemite, each of them offers a completely different experience. Those wishing to see a not-so-crowded side of this national park should definitely opt for the high country.

When compared to the Yosemite Valley, the Tuolumne Meadows area isn’t as crowded and features relatively flat-relief landscapes combined with high-elevation trailheads. The views are breathtaking and there’s plenty of water.

Furthermore, the wildlife of the Tuolumne Meadows region isn’t as accustomed to people. While this makes taking photos of animals a bit more challenging, it also means that you won’t have to worry about hungry bears creeping into the camp.

The campground that is situated next to this route (and in which you’ll probably spend a night or two) has solar-powered outhouses and treated water. In other words, full backcountry comfort! There are also bear boxes here, which is something that can’t be said for every campsite in the Yosemite National Park. This removes the need to carry inconvenient and heavy bear canisters.

Those who wish to spend a night or two in the Yosemite National Park need to obtain a permit for doing so. Reserving one in advance is always recommended.

However, it is worth mentioning that visiting the ranger station right before your journey brings the ability to obtain a first-come-first-served permit – if you get there in the morning and before everybody else does, that is. Do not expect to obtain a last-minute permit if you’re trekking during the holidays or weekends.

5. Mammoth Crest

Mammoth Peak California

  • Elevation gain/loss: 2,000 feet
  • Mileage: 24 miles out-and-back

Do you want to get away from the Yosemite crowds? If so, heading over to the Eastern Sierras is one of your best options. This particular mountain range, which comprises the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada, is home to El Cap and Half Dome, but it definitely has a lot more to offer.

Embarking on a 3-day Mammoth Crest trekking journey is an amazing way to immerse yourself in this stunning region and experience its wonders – like the granite peaks – in the best way possible.

There is something amazing to see at every turn – from sparkling blue alpine lakes to eye-catching streams that will make you stop in wonder. Throughout this entire voyage, you’ll be getting beautiful panoramic views of the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Minaret Range, and the rest of the Sierras.

While it’s true that rough mountain terrain can be quite difficult for those who don’t have much experience in backpacking, I think that tackling this trip over the span of three days is more than manageable.

Once the camp is set up, you’ll be able to get rid of your gear until it’s time to move out. On the second day, you’ll be day-hiking from the camp with a daypack in order to explore the surrounding region. In other words, the time trekking with a huge pack on your back is minimal.

And finally, even though this particular trail is difficult, you can be sure that the views are going to distract you the whole time. Make sure to prepare a nutritious and filling meal for your adventure. Check out our day hike meal ideas as well as our pick for the best backpacking stove .

Those wishing to engage in overnight trips in the Sierra National Forest cannot do so without a permit, which becomes available for obtaining half a year before the date of the hike.

Another item all trekkers are required to have is an approved bear canister, which you’ll be using for your provisions and all scented objects.

6. Lassen Volcanic Cinder Cone Loop

Lassen Peak, California

  • Elevation gain/loss: 4,000 feet
  • Length: 4 days
  • Mileage: 24-mile loop

So, you’re ready for your very first hiking adventure in California. You bought all the necessary gear and you can’t wait to explore the backcountry. But something just doesn’t feel quite right – you’d really like to see the wild and only the wild, i.e you don’t want to bump into other trekkers every few miles along the way.

If this is the case, the Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is located in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada Range, is one of your best options. This mountainous wonderland is a phenomenal destination for all those interested in seeing remnants of past volcanic activity.

What is more, there is an ongoing geothermal activity in this area, and there are also far fewer people in it than in Yosemite park – it’s a great choice for the backpacking beginners who want to stay away from the crowds.

The fact that you’re a complete rookie in the world of backpacking doesn’t mean that you have to walk a trail that is riddled with other outdoor enthusiasts. The Lassen Volcanic National Park provides hikers – whether they’re experienced or not – with breathtaking scenery, mild elevation gain, and excellent trekking trails.

Another thing that turns this trip into a terrific choice for the backpacking amateurs is the short daily mileage. You’ll have more than enough time to read books under the shadows of ancient volcanoes, take dips in the area’s magnificent lakes, or just relax wherever and whenever you want to.

Those who decide to walk this trail unguided will be pleased to know that this park’s free permit system is exceptionally easy to navigate. All that one has to do is to pay a visit to a self-registration station, fill out an overnight permit, and then just follow the usual leave-no-trace principles.

And while it’s great that you won’t have to make reservations in advance for this adventure, one not-so-great thing is that you will have to get an approved bear canister and store all of your provisions in it.

7. Redwoods National & State Parks

Redwood National Park

  • Elevation gain/loss: Minimal
  • Mileage: Around 7 miles out-and-back

Due to the fact that they’re easily accessed, the trekking campsites of the Redwood National Park are among the best in the entire country.

Even though it’s true that one’s options are quite limited when it comes to multi-day hikes, forming an ideal backpacking adventure by linking several trails together is entirely possible.

Here, you’ll be able to explore meandering riverways, coastal bluffs, and towering redwood forests. One thing is certain – sleeping under these massive trees is guaranteed to make you think about how small we – the humans – are when compared to some of the planet’s oldest species.

A lot of campsites, such as the Elam Backcountry Camp or DeMartin Backcountry Camp, are just a few miles away from the highway. You will not, however, have to worry about the noise – the gigantic trees effortlessly block the noise of the traffic.

This park’s service provides outdoor enthusiasts with informative brochures that let them know what they can expect in the area. Most campgrounds are equipped with picnic tables, fire pits, and food storage lockers.

Before starting the hike in the RNSP, you will have to obtain a free backcountry permit. As you can already guess, these are given by the Park Service.

However, there’s a big difference between RNSP and other national parks when it comes to campsite reservations – here, you will not be able to reserve your spot months in advance. You can only do so during the reservation period which starts two weeks before your hike and ends two days before it.

I love hiking, backpacking, and camping. From the Camino de Santiago to the West Highland Way in Scotland or simply a great day hike on the weekend. Hiking refreshes me, my mind, and keeps my body reasonably fit. So far I have walked three Camino routes and many other long distance hikes in the UK, Canada, and around the rest of Europe. One of the best was my hike up Ben Nevis.

more information about usa hiking vacations

What is a hiking vacation.

A hiking vacation or multi-day hiking tour can naturally take many different forms, but for most travelers it’s a trip to a new or return destination to hike, explore, learn and discover. Some of the most popular destinations in the U.S.A. for a hiking vacation are:

  • Desert Southwest: Grand Canyon, Southern Utah, Sedona, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Capitol Reef, Paria Canyon, and more
  • Sierra Nevadas Mountains: Yosemite, Eastern Sierras, Sequoia-Kings Canyon and more
  • Pacific Northwest: Mountain Rainier, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park and more
  • Rocky Mountains: Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and more
  • Appalachia: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains and more

camp or accommodations?

Many travelers choose to camp on hiking vacations in the U.S., but staying in accommodations can also be a great option, without necessarily detracting from the level of adventure of a multi-day hiking tour. Accommodations in the U.S. normally are hotels and lodges, with an outside of chance of finding yurt accommodations (semi-permanent, framed, soft-sided structures).

BACKPACKING OR TREKKING?

NATIONAL PARKS, STATE PARKS, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE AND BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT

Generally speaking, your vaction will most likely be to one or more national parks , state parks , United States Forest Service (USFS) lands, or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Most visitors will head to national parks, but the other areas should not be overlooked. Some of the most amazing hiking vacations in the USA are on USFS and BLM lands. A basic breakdown of each, and their differences, is provided here:

  • National Parks: these are the big name destinations like Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains…etc. They are highly regulated, amazingly well maintained wild refuges throughout the United States. Any overnight camping and backpacking will require permits; dogs are not allowed; and advanced planning is highly recommended.
  • State Parks: these lands are often much smaller than the national parks (like less than 1% the size on average), but there are some wonderful state parks that offer fantastic trekking experiences. For example, the Northern California coast is mostly comprised of state parks that offer stunning views and excellent coastal hiking.
  • USFS Lands: the Western USA is made up of millions of square miles of USFS lands, and they are some of the most breathtaking and expansive wilderness left in the USA and the world. These areas often do not require permits and are more lightly regulated than the national parks. Dogs are allowed on most USFS lands.
  • BLM: these lands are sometimes amazing, sometimes not, sometimes pristine, sometimes riddled with roads, mines and/or other extractive industry activity like drilling. These lands are the least regulated and least visited, which means they can be home to some surprisingly amazing secret gem areas. Dogs are allowed.

walking in the desert

Many trekking vacations in the USA will be in the Southwestern part of the country, where desert ecosystems prevail. This region is home to the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Great Basin deserts. Characterized by low levels of precipitation, hot summer temperatures and mild winter temperatures, deserts can make for wonderful winter hiking vacations. They can also be great in the spring and fall. It’s recommended to avoid deserts in the summer months unless you’re well prepared for the high temperatures and dry conditions. Also, any time you’re walking in the desert (but especially if it’s in the summer), it’s imperative to be aware of common medical conditions such as heat stroke and hyponatremia , and how to avoid them.

walking in the mountains

The USA is home to a staggering number of different mountain ranges, from the Rocky Mountains to the Sierras, Appalachians, Cascades, Allegheny’s, Smokies, Asheville Area , White Mountains…etc. And within one major range, like the Rocky Muntains, there are subranges like the San Juans, Sangre de Christos, Missions, Crazies, Flat Tops , Wind Rivers…etc. And many of America’s most famous national parks are in the mountains, like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains and many others.

Generally speaking, walking in the mountains is best in the late spring, summer and fall months. Often the early spring is still quite snowy in the mountains, and snow begins to fall again usually in mid to late fall. The summer months are prime time for most mountain visits. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms and not getting caught out in the open (such as above treeline) if thunderstorms roll in. And be prepared for sudden and extreme weather shifts – a day in the mountains can begin warm and clear and within a couple hours be dark, cold, windy and rainy.

walking on the coasts

Of course the coasts, both west and east, offer incredible trekking opportunities. With national parks like Olympic National Park and Acadia National Park in the east, hugging the coasts, there are fantastic on-foot adventures to be had. When hiking on the coasts, be aware of tides and slippery, treacherous sections of walking. Being caught in a tidal zone when the tide roles back in can be a mistake you’ll never have a chance of repeating, so plan ahead, talk to experts, or join guided hikes with expert trip leaders.

How to travel by bicycle in Russia: ideas and suggestions

Day trips in Russia

Newcomers can test their “strength” on a one-day trip – the roads should not be complicated and the distances should not be too long. For first-time riders, study the route carefully, taking into account not only the length of the road, but also the conditions: there should be no long climbs and no high mountain passes. The flatter the road, the better. Do not ride close to crowded and busy large traffic lanes, even if conditions permit.  Also, make sure carry your Russian invitation letter with your visa .

Route: Levutov – Pavlovsky town

Distance: 65 km

From Reutov (metro station “Novokosino”) outside Moscow, via Saltykovsk, Zheleznodorozhny, Fedurnovo, then turn to Biserovo, to Staraya Kupavna, then to Elektrostal via Ivashevo, and finally to Pavlovsky Posad via Subbotino, the intercity electric train This is a good route for newcomers to the town of Pavlovsky Posad (Vokhna or Pavlovsky Posad station).

This route is good for beginners: the terrain remains almost unchanged throughout the route. It’s mainly asphalt, but it’s quiet, with a rural landscape and few cars. Also, there are many intercity train stations along the way – if you get tired, you can take the train back to Moscow.

guided backpacking trips for beginners near me

For the uninitiated, there are plenty of suitable roads around Moscow. The entire Moscow region is dotted with railway lines, so it is not necessary to make a circular route. You can take an intercity train to one station and back from another. There are many convenient route options around most Russian cities. You can make your own route, or take the advice of experienced travelers and use an already prepared route map.

Two-day trips in Russia

If you can travel 60-70 km per day, it’s no problem and you’ll be able to ride for two days. First of all, you need to solve your overnight problem: will you stay in a hotel, borrow a private house or pitch your own tent? Be sure to take the weather into account and take extra things that will keep you warm or heated.

When choosing your route, add some “hills” on the way, but not too steep.

Keep an eye on your bike. Ideally, it should be carefully checked and tested two days before departure; if you don’t know much about bike parts, you should have a full “car check” at a good mechanic’s shop to remove all faults in time.

Route: ride along Nizhny Novgorod and rest on the Volga

Distance: 140 km

This is a self-guided route with picturesque Volga forests, where you will have to pitch a tent on the road overnight. You don’t have to think about the schedule of electric trains or buses, even if you are delayed on the way, don’t worry.

From Nizhny Novgorod, you will pass through the town of Bor (you can cross the Volga by cable car). Next, head to Ivanovskoye. On the way, note the unique, interlocking bi-level railroad: it is no longer in use, but the original structure is still there. Then go in the direction of Yurasovo, where you will turn to Maloye Utkino, then to Beryozovka, to Vypolzovo, then to the Volga River, to Apraksino, passing through the hill fortress with its ancient earthen embankment. Hillfort, which retains its ancient earthen berm.

After that, follow Orlovo, Belkino, Yamnovo, Zavrazhnoye, Selishi. After passing through Zhukovka, you can go straight through the forest to the bank of the Volga River and find a place to pitch your tent.

The next day, go in the direction of Pumra, then through Vagankovo, Orekhovo, Markovo, turn left at Matveyevka, go to Vatoma, then through Put’kovo and back to the banks of the Volga, then to the town of Pol, and then to Nizhny Novgorod.

There are many suitable two-day rides in the Volga Valley, around the Voronezh region, around the cities along the Golden Ring and in the Crimean steppe.

Multi-day rides in Russia

Riding for several days in a row is a very serious matter and you need to be physically prepared. For the first time, choose a route that is not too difficult and not extreme, because riding a few days in a row is not at all the same as riding 100 km in a week. Please estimate that it is more comfortable to travel 70-80 km per day on the plains and with much less hills.

Check to see if there are any settlements along the way – it depends on whether you’ll be carrying a lot of food, or if you can buy all your food along the way. But whenever and wherever you go, make sure you have drinking water on you. Please do not forget to constantly replenish your supplies and have an emergency reserve – about 1.5 liters of water per person.

Route: “Crimean coast: from Kerch to Alushta”

Distance: 270 km , 5-7 days

We have intentionally divided the trip on this route into several days, as it depends a lot on your fitness and desire to visit the sights – which will be seen on the way, and quite a lot of them. There will be some mountain passes – if you feel tired as you pass them, it is always possible to set up camp early and prepare for an overnight stay. Almost the entire road runs along the coastline. If you don’t want to pitch a tent, you can easily find a place to spend the night in the resort.

Get off the ferry to Kerch and head directly to the Feodossia steppe. Pass through the town of Ordzhonikidze and head to Koktebel. Be prepared for a long and tiring uphill climb. If you don’t want to tire yourself out that much, then sacrifice some of the scenic views and take a different route – along the Simferopol highway.

From Koktebeli there is a difficult mountain road leading to Sudak. The strongest will can cycle to the town of “Novyi Svit” in one day, while the rest of the people should go to the village of Morske and then to Alushta via Rybache and Malorichens’ke. From Alushta, you can take a bicycle and a trolleybus to Simferopol, from where you can return by plane or return to Kerch by bus or taxi.
