Generally my wife and I do not do tours like this. We enjoy being in our own and on our own time. That was until we saw how difficult the mountain roads on Maui are to drive. We found it difficult to soak in the amazing views as we swerved in and out of curves and having near misses with on coming traffic. We did this tour with low expectations and left it blown away. Damien was a incredible. His knowledge of the land around us was vast. It made us so much more knowledgeable about the Hawaiian culture. We made all the stops that we wanted to make in the first place and made it stress free as we got to soak in all the gorgeous sights. I generally don't recommend tour companies, but Hana & Beyond made our experience perfect. Don't hesitate booking a road to Hana tour with them, you won't regret it.

Locally owned business. When i called them, Walter answered all of my questions and was so helpful. Kimo our driver and guide did our tour on a Saturday. Such a great time talking about Hawaiian history and local traditions. He stopped at many places along the way. Kimo was always considerate of the traffic and bathroom breaks lol Lunch was a good sized sandwich, soft drinks and chips We even got a ukelele lesson!! he did ask us if we wanted to stop at many places along the way to get additional snacks or try some local food. Transit Bus was comfortable and ac worked to keep us cool I recommend them highly for anyone who wants a great tour on the Road to Hana Mahalo

Aloha John F. Thank you for taking the time to offer your perspective by way of review. Your honest review is very much appreciated. We'd also like to extend our gratitude for taking the tour with Hana and Beyond. We'd like to take a moment to address your concerns. The pre-set stops are generated so that there is a baseline to go off of when on tour. Yes there are multiple stops along the way however each pre-stop was chosen specifically with a balance of culture, history, highway regulations and enjoyment in mind. These actions should be conveyed while on the journey. Red Sand Beach is a sensitive topic as it relates to Private Property, Danger and Historical and Cultural Sensitivity. We do not go to the red sand beach for those reasons, and neither does any respectable tour company, accepted by the Hana community. To get to the Red Sand Beach, one would need to Trespass onto Private Property to access the DANGEROUS trail. We do not advocate committing a crime or putting our guests lives at risk, to access a location, where numerous life threatening injuries and 2-3 deaths per year, occur. The trail itself has been severely damaged and people often get seriously hurt by falling 50 plus feet down the cliff side. If there are tour companies going to this location, they are either illegal tour operators or they are tour companies that simply have no respect for law or private property or for the Hana community and the lives and safety of our first responders. Due to the fact that we are born and raised in Hana and Leialoha is essentially from there, we are proud that she chose to put your well being before any personal preferences or social media clout. She gets 5 Starts from us! Huli Huli chicken is wonderful, however there are two concerns that were created during the pandemic. The first was not all roadside food locations were consistent, meaning operating daily and at most times they were either sold out and or the lines to get food were too long thereby creating a time constraint on the tour. It is our hope that we can get back to normal when the pandemic ends. The time element for the tour is usually 9-10 hours, depending on what part of the Island you are from and the movement of the people on tour as well as vehicular traffic. The extra 90 minutes is due to the additional stop for Huli Huli chicken, in addition creating your snowball effect of vehicular traffic. (Timing is everything.) Though you can get a glimpse of red sand there, this is not the red sand beach. We do offer private tours where you can request a Huli Huli chicken stop. The Road to Hana is a "must see" while in Maui. We booked this tour through a concierge at our hotel because the one set up though our tour company was already full. Our guide (Leialoha) was top notch... 5 Stars for her energy and likability. She was highly in tune with the whole Hana trip because she had family everywhere! Stop to buy Banana Bread... say hi to her aunt! Stop at a waterfall.... Meet her one of her cousins driving another tour bus. See a guy who is working construction on the road.... It's another cousin! Her father grew up in Hana, so this is essentially her home. The tour is beautiful, but if I had to point out some drawbacks, it's the pre-set stops. It would be nice to have made a few more stops at unique places along the way. Like Huli Huli Chicken or the Red Sand Beach. I get it, It is a long day, and you can't stop everywhere. Here's where I have to subtract a few stars for this tour. When I asked about the Red Sand Beach I was told that it was closed because the trail has become too dangerous. But when I got back to my hotel I found out that the other tour company (that was cheaper than this one) stoped at the red sand beach... and at Huli Huli chicken! Their tour was also about 90 mins longer than ours. The other tour also got breakfast, this one you have to buy your own. Might want to shop around to get a better deal.

For the 3rd day on the job, Sean was awesome! Just kidding, he has 2 years of experience driving Road to Hana! He told fun jokes, was overall very down to earth and let everyone in the van have their own time exploring. Definitely an expert driver for this narrow road up and down the mountain. Over all, we had a really good time and would recommend. Trust me, you will be thankful that you has an expert driving you!

This tour felt very corporate I feel I could have done better driving myself. I was hoping for more of a locals only type of experience. We Stopped at Starbucks for breakfast- that really set the standard for the rest of the trip. Also thought breakfast was included per the website but I guess not?? If you are going to make us buy our own breakfast, with so many better local options along this road, why are we stopping at a chain we can get anywhere? There were so many cool stops with local food options along the way we drove right on past. Included great food stops. The lunch included mentioned on the website had a gluten free option but when I got my lunch it was the same as everyone else and said "this is regular bread we don't offer gluten free" For anyone with celiac they wouldn't have been able to eat that at all due to cross contamination. Unbelievable. Once we got to Hana I was excited to explore more of the area we were being told about on foot but no... the van never stopped. We got 5 minutes total all in the van. I was disappointed to come all that way and not get to explore. While I enjoyed the road, the foliage, the sites we did stop, this tour left much to be desired.. won't recommend or ever do this again unfortunately.

We chose to do the Road to Hana tour with Hana and Beyond while in Maui last week and it was the best choice! Our guide was Sheldon and he was so inviting and friendly that it made the whole tour enjoyable. There was a landslide in Maui so he told us ahead of time we wouldn't be able to go full circle, BUT he made up for that by taking us by a few other places. He was awesome, very attentive amd the tour was the greatest. If you want to so Hana...choose Hana and Beyond! (I also love the fact that they are all locals and it's a fam business. Support local!)

Saw a driver from this company around 4:30 today in Kaanapali driving recklessly. He cut me off as I passed a car and then tailgated me until he finally backed off. In my rear view mirror I watched him swerving between lanes trying to get ahead. At a stoplight I looked to see if there were any passengers and thankfully the van was empty. He was a tatted up skinny brunette with sunglasses. Absolutely going to cause a wreck and possibly injuries if he continues driving with no Aloha. Only writing this because another reviewer mentioned a terrible driver and the owner responded with a comment that if anyone else saw something like it again to let him know.

We had a great tour to Hana! Captain Glenn handled all the turns like a pro and was so knowledgeable about the island and it's history.

Black Sand Beach

We planned on driving the Road to Hana ourselves. I've done it once before several years ago so was aware of the many twists and turns. Our good friends came with on this trip and as they'd never really been outside of Kentucky I just thought....we'd be better off with a tour so we could all see and enjoy without the stress of driving. Our hotel had 2 offerings. I looked at Yelp, TripAdvisor and posted in one of the Maui Facebook groups asking for suggestions. I settled on Hana and Beyond but booked directly rather than pay the upcharge with the hotel's concierge. It was a very early am pickup so after our groups were loaded up, we headed to Starbucks where we all opened our eyes a bit wider with some hot coffee and a snack. Hana and Beyond provided fresh sandwiches for lunch with drinks and chips too. We could not have been more pleased. Without a doubt being in a large windowed comfy van was a pleasure. But our driver, Nancy.....well this woman deserves a medal. Charming, funny, clever and oh so educated and aware of her beloved Maui. She shared, explained and kept us informed on all the history of the island and its people. The politics and current issues facing many of its people. We saw EVERYTHING. Stopped or slowed at many of the beautiful waterfalls and sights. Headed to Black Beach where Hana and Beyond is provided a time slot so we could all have lunch and take in the beach. Our trip included the reverse so we were taken around the entire island. It was really wonderful. It is a long day and we had that very good exhaustion at the end of it. There are plenty of companies to use, but I would so strongly recommend these nice folks.

We love Valley Isle Excursions. After living on Maui and seeing plenty of tour groups on the Road to Hana, we wholeheartedly recommend Valley Isle Excursions for a group tour. A group tour isn’t for everyone, but if you don’t mind being in a van with fellow visitors, this is a great tour. 

On this small group tour, up to 12 people are in the van but this isn’t an uncomfortable van ride. All seats are 23” captain chairs with USB ports. The chairs are elevated and have 40” windows, which help you get a good view along the way. Meals and reservations to Waianapanapa State Park (home of the famous black sand beach) are included. The tour runs 11-12 hours and they allow travelers of all ages to join.

Hana & Beyond: Best Local Tour

While all great Hawaii tour companies are proud to employ local tour guides (it makes such a difference), Hana & Beyond stands out. Their Road to Hana tour is a full-circle tour, so you get to see sights past Hana. The tour runs roughly 10 hours and you’ll be in a van that holds 9-14 guests.

While they do offer private tours , the tours are not customizable. They provide breakfast and lunch as well as snacks and drinks throughout the day. 

Awapuhi Adventures: Best Private Full and Halfway to Hana Tour

If you’re not interested in a group tour and you’d rather customize your trip experience, Awapuhi Adventures is a great choice. They specialize in private tours and you can choose your activity level.

They offer a full Road to Hana tour where you can customize your stops, including being dropped off to enjoy the Pipiwai Trail hike. A full day Road to Hana tour is around 12 hours. If that’s too much for your trip, they also offer halfway to Hana tours which won’t take you all the way to Hana, but you’ll get to experience the beauty of the tropical windward side of the island during the 7-8 hour tour.

It’s also a great option if you’re traveling with kids who you don’t think can do an entire Road to Hana day.

Experience Maui Tours: Best Combo Tour

If you’re prepared for a long day where you get to see both the Road to Hana and Haleakala, this is the tour for you. Experience Maui offers a private group tour that combines a Road to Hana and Haleakala sunset. The tour follows the full loop past Hana town around Haleakala, so you get to drive on the backside. 

Each car can hold up to seven passengers (for larger groups, additional cars can be used) and the stops along the Road to Hana are completely customizable. Meals are included and they usually stop for lunch as well as have a light charcuterie board dinner on Haleakala prior to sunset. 

The tour runs from approximately 9 am to 8 or 9 pm.

If you’re a party of 1 heading out on a Road to Hana trip, one of the group tours is going to be the best option for you. Both Valley Isle Excursions and Hana and Beyond offer Road to Hana tours that you can book just for one person. This won’t be a private tour, but you’ll meet some friends on your tour and have a great time. I would much rather do a group tour than drive the road alone! 

Best Road to Hana tour for a luxury private experience

If you are looking to ride around in style on a luxury private Road to Hana tour, Maui Seasons is the one to book. For parties up to six people, take their Cadillac SUV on a 10-12 hour tour which can be customized to fit what you want to see. Should i drive the road to hana or take a tour.

The Road to Hana is at the top of most visitors’ bucket lists. And it is truly an incredible experience. You spend the day traversing to East Maui, heading past lush rainforests, and waterfalls, and stopping for views of the dramatic coastline. 

While you can drive the Road to Hana yourself, we recommend considering a tour. The tours help you learn and see more on the road, make things like finding parking and visiting legal spots much easier, and help ease congestion on the road. For example, tour operators usually won’t stop at Waikani Falls or Hanawai Falls because safe and legal parking is hard to come by there. Going with a knowledgeable guide helps you stay on public property and visit sites safely.

What can you expect on a Road to Hana tour?

On a Road to Hana tour, you can expect a long but really enjoyable day. While there are different tours and companies to choose from, they all offer the same key components: 

• Transportation (pickup and drop off at your hotel)
• A guide (knowledgeable and entertaining, hopefully!)
• An itinerary of legal stops
• Water and drinks (usually)

At a bare minimum, a Road to Hana tour should alleviate the headaches of driving, planning your route, and finding parking at different locations. What to consider before booking a Road to Hana tour?

The biggest factor to consider when choosing a Road to Hana tour is balancing the needs and wants of your group with your budget. 

Do you have young children? A group tour probably won’t be as relaxing for you as a private half-day tour. Do you want to be able to choose your stops? A private tour is the way to go. Do you just want to get out on the road with a great guide and have a nice experience? Finding a small group with around 10 people or fewer will probably offer you a good experience at a lower cost.

The  Hana Highway , or The Road to Hana as it’s more well known, is a 64.4-mile-long portion of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360. The highway connects tourists and locals alike from the town of Kahului in Central Maui to the town of Hana in East Maui . The “road” has been around since the 16th century. Then known as The Kings Trail, it was ordered by Chief Piilani who wanted to be able to travel from village to village by foot rather than by canoe on the ocean.

Modern (wider dirt and rock) roads were built in the late 1800s to facilitate the movement of people and products to and from the plantations in Hana. Sugar cane mills along with rubber and pineapple plantations thrived in Hana at that time, making the construction of better roadways to and from Kahului and Paia a must. The highway wasn’t paved until 1962 and even then there were still unpaved stretches. Surprisingly, the highway was not fully paved until the 1980s.

Great trip with Luke. At one of our stops, I heard some ladies complaining about getting back on the uncomfortable bus, so I had to thank Luke when we got back in the very comfortable SUV! I would highly recommend.

We booked this tour not knowing what to expect besides it was a tour to the famous road to hana. When you book a tour you don’t really know what to expect how it’s gonna go or with who. Spencer was our tour guide and wow all i can say is highly recommend and he over exceeded expectations if you’re going to book a tour make sure it’s worth spencer. Spencer commmunicated with me the day before pick up showed up at the exact time of pick up he made the experience comfortable and there was not one moment where we were quiet he taught us about the culture the island and history behind every location we visited beautiful experience with an amazing tour guide you won’t be disappointed the road to hana is a beautiful experience but when you have a tour guide that makes the time more enjoyable the experience is better you won’t be disappointed.

We had an amazing day with Shayne. He was extremely knowledgeable and considerate of everyone in our party and our abilities (there were 5 of us including 11yo, 9yo, and 7yo). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed our tour especially the red sand beach. The girls have enthusiastically retold their favorite parts of the tour to friends and family. Definitely amazing memories made!
