Happy Valley theme holiday lures TV drama's fans to Calderdale

Dozens of people have booked Happy Valley touring holidays in Calderdale following the success of the drama, a travel agency has said.

The final episode of the BBC One series, set in the Calder Valley, aired to an average audience of 7.5 million.

A holiday firm has created a five-day tour of filming locations and the wider area in response to demand from fans.

Sunderland-based Tates Travel said 40 people had booked a place on the tour since it was launched last week.

Lisa Halliday, a partner at the firm, said the £339 per person tour had received so many bookings the company was looking to add more dates.

The holiday includes a visit to Hebden Bridge, day trips to Halifax and Haworth and a journey on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

"Happy Valley showed the area in a very good light, the surrounding countryside was beautiful, coupled with it being such a great programme," said Ms Halliday.

She believes people are more interested in booking holidays in the UK since the pandemic and said many customers wanted to visit places linked to their favourite shows.

"It's a cult thing, people want to go to visit places that are very current on TV," she said.

"All of us in the office watched Happy Valley, it was very good, I watched all three series over a weekend."

Hebden Bridge councillor Sarah Courtney said that "overall the series is really good" for the district.

Ms Courtney, who lives near the house used as Sgt Catherine Cawood's home in the series, said the area welcomed fans but urged visitors to be considerate to residents.

She said the area had been busier than usual during half-term, with sightseers taking photos outside key locations used in the series.

"People who live here are quite positive about it, it's fun to watch and recognise the places. We welcome the tourism," she said.

"But we do have issues with parking [in Hebden Bridge], we are a narrow valley with a single road going through it. We really encourage people to come by public transport."

Happy Valley Tour

Read reviews

Step into the world of Happy Valley on our filming location walking tour and visit the picturesque town of Hebden Bridge and the village of Heptonstall. Nestled in the heart of the stunning Yorkshire Moors, you’ll learn about Hebden Bridge’s rich history and how it acted as the backdrop to this gritty and captivating British crime drama.  This guided, 2 ½ hour walking tour will take you on a journey through all 3 seasons of Happy Valley and you’ll get an insider’s view of the places where Catherine Cawood, played by Sarah Lancashire, fought crime, cared for her community and protected her family.

The tour starts at Hebden Bridge railway station which featured in series 3 of Happy Valley when Ryan bunked off school to see Tommy in court. As you walk through Hebden Bridge you’ll pass by the famous music venue, Trades Club, before making your way to some of the town’s independent shops. During the tour, you’ll be given the chance to visit the shop where Sarah Lancashire bought Happy Valley leaving presents for all the cast and crew at the end of series 3.

As you meander through the town, you will see the house that was used as Clare and Neil’s house in series 3, when Ryan stayed with them after visiting Tommy in prison. Then you’ll step back in time to see Ryan, played by Rhys Connah, as a young lad of 8 years old, all the way back in series 1 when we see him getting told off by his granny.

Strolling on through the town you will walk along the street where Catherine admits to Joyce that she doesn’t have an alibi for the murders in series 2. Other locations that feature in the tour include the café where Clare accidentally reveals a secret to Daniel in series 1, where Catherine and Joyce see a Michael Jackson tribute act and the moment when Ann Gallagher drunkenly compares Catherine to God!

Of course, no Happy Valley tour would be complete without a stop by Catherine Cawood’s house where you’ll see the window that Tommy broke in order to sneak into her home. You’ll hear about the scenes that were filmed here including the explosive finale to the series and how it was actually filmed. While you’re by Catherine’s home you’ll get a peak around the back where you’ll see the conservatory where Catherine slept during series 2 when Llinka stayed with Catherine’s neighbour Winnie. You’ll also get a chance to visit the spot where Tommy Lee Royce, played by James Norton, dumped the Knezevic’s car and where Clare, played by Siobhan Finneran, comforts Catherine after her showdown with her evil nemesis Tommy over her kitchen table.

Making your way onto another of Hepden Bridge’s bustling shopping streets, you’ll uncover the locations used for Neil’s corner shop, the place where Clare and Neil met and the spot where Tommy Lee Royce introduces himself to his son for the first time.

Part of the tour includes a short bus journey (not included in the price of the tour) from Hebden Bridge to Heptonstall village where the tour will end. But even the bus journey includes more Happy Valley locations as you will go to the same stop that Tommy used when arriving in Hebden Bridge in series 1.

Upon arriving in the beautiful village of Heptonstall, you will visit the graveyard where Catherine’s daughter, Becky is buried. While you are there you’ll have the chance to take in the tranquillity of your surroundings and see the ruins of St Thomas A’ Becket church, as seen in the show.

Throughout the tour, our knowledgeable and local guide will share fascinating stories and behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the making of Happy Valley as well as information about the actors and the production team.

Whether you’re a local or a first-time visitor to the Calder Valley, our Happy Valley tour promises to be a truly unforgettable experience that is not to be missed. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the beauty and magic of Yorkshire’s Happy Valley with you.

Yorkshire's Happy Valley & Brontë Steam

Join us for a special five-day break to take in the delights of Yorkshire, where we combine a scenic tour around some of the filming locations for the critically acclaimed British crime drama,  Happy Valley , with a heritage steam train ride on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Don’t miss your chance to discover the rolling countryside that will forever be synonymous with the Brontë sisters and the lost-in-time charms of Haworth and Keighley.

Included Excursions

Keighley, Steam Train & Haworth  (full day)

We begin the day in the pretty market town of Keighley, which is nestled within classic Brontë country and provided the location to some iconic scenes in  Happy Valley . Take the chance to explore at leisure before we enjoy a scenic train journey on the Keighley & Worth Valley Heritage Steam Railway. This five-mile branch line winds through glorious West Yorkshire countryside and certain sections were used as the backdrop for the 1970s film  The Railway Children .

We alight in the village of Haworth. Former stomping ground of the Brontë sisters and easily one of the quaintest villages in West Yorkshire, it’s not hard to see how Haworth’s meandering cobbled lanes gazing out towards the mysterious moors provided inspiration for the likes of  Wuthering Heights  and  Jane Eyre . The Brontë Parsonage Museum is well worth a visit before taking the chance to explore the lovely range of shops.

Happy Valley Locations Tour  (full day)

Today makes for the highlight of our five-day adventure as we enjoy a tour around some of the most notable  Happy  Valley  filming locations. First up is Hebden Bridge, sitting pretty in the Upper Calder Valley, this ready-for-its-close-up waterside town boasts atmospheric cobbled alleyways, a famous market and lovely views over Hebden Water. Fans of the nail-biting crime drama will recognise it as the hometown of protagonist Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

We continue to Sowerby Bridge. This canal-side setting was in fact where Sally Wainwright, the show’s creator, grew up and it stars in the majority of scenes in the TV series. We see the exterior of Catherine’s house on Tuel Lane which plunges from the top of the valley to the town below and nearby is the former post office, which provided the on-screen police station. We end our tour in Halifax – you may recognise Harveys of Halifax department store from the show – and we have some time at leisure to discover the best of the town.

Optional Excursion

York & Harrogate – £13pp  (full day)

Join us for a wonderful optional excursion where we first travel to the city of York. Highlights include the beautiful York Minster, the JORVIK Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum, or you may like to take a stroll around the ancient walls which surround the city before heading to the charming ‘Shambles’, a warren of narrow lanes and overhanging buildings dating back to medieval times.

Our next stop is the elegant spa town of Harrogate, where top sights include the Royal Pump Room and the attractive Montpellier Quarter with its pedestrianised streets lined with 19th-century buildings that are now home to galleries and boutiques. No trip to Harrogate is complete without a visit to the original Betty’s tea room, where you can indulge in their famous afternoon tea.

A Happy Valley coach tour has been announced, enabling fans of the gritty TV drama to visit key locations in the show.

The Yorkshire-based BBC One drama follows lead character Catherine Cawood, a policewoman played by Sarah Lancashire.

Over three seasons it has earned legions of loyal fans, with scenes set in Sheffield but often filmed in other West Yorkshire locations as well as in Manchester.

Happy Valley ’s latest series has been mostly filmed against the backdrop of places like Sowerby Bridge and Halifax, while the market town of Hebden Bridge is the setting for Catherine Cawood’s home town.

All these locations are to be covered on the coach tour, and the news coincides with the TV show’s grand finale, airing this Sunday night.

JG Travel Group announced the trip this week; the firm will operate five-day tours of West Yorkshire with its Just Go! Holidays and National Holidays brands.

Three trip departures have been planned for June 19, July 17, August 28 and September 25, and the coach journey will stop at several pickup points in the North East, Midlands and the North West.

Prices start at £339 per person, including four nights’ accommodation with breakfast and dinner.

Explaining the tour announcement, JG Travel Group product director Joanna Roberts said:“ Happy Valley has such a huge following of fans, first airing in 2014 and running for three series.

“We’ve created this new tour in time for the finale on Sunday and hope that agents will use the hype around the show as an opportunity to generate sales.

“We know how well our other tours sell that link to TV shows and I have no doubt that this will appeal to lots of customers who will miss watching the drama unfold in West Yorkshire.”

The third and final series of Happy Valley has focused on Catherine Cawood hunting down murderer and sex offender Tommy Lee Royce, who is played by James Norton. Fan theories are already circulating about how the drama will draw to a close.

Groups will visit Hebden Bridge which is where Happy Valley  star Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) lives.

The JG Travel Group has launched the five-day ‘Yorkshire’s Happy Valley & Brontë Steam’ break, themed around the drama which left our screens for good after a nail-biting finale.

Available through both Just Go! Holidays and National Holidays, the tour starts in Hebden Bridge which Happy Valley fans will recognise as the home town of protagonist Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

Sitting pretty in the Upper Calder Valley, this waterside town boasts atmospheric cobbled alleyways, a famous market and lovely views over Hebden Water.

Sowerby Bridge is the next stop, where Sally Wainwright, the show’s creator, grew up and it stars in the TV series.

There is the chance to see the exterior of Catherine’s house on Tuel Lane which plunges from the top of the valley to the town below and nearby is the former post office, which provided the on-screen police station. The full day locations tour ends in Halifax, where fans may recognise Harveys of Halifax department store from the show.

The break also includes a visit to Keighley, plus a scenic heritage train journey on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway through Brontë Country to Haworth is also included.

Julie Wilson, groups manager at JG Travel Group said: “ Happy Valley has such a huge following of fans, first airing in 2014 and running for three series.

“I hope organisers in the relevant pickup areas will use the hype around the shows end as an opportunity to generate sales. We know how well our other tours sell that link to TV shows and I have no doubt that there will be plenty of interest from those who will miss watching the drama unfold in West Yorkshire.”

Departing on dates in June, July, August and September, the price of the tour includes return coach travel from the Midlands, Northeast and the Northwest, four nights’ accommodation with breakfast and dinner, the Happy Valley Locations tour, an excursion to Keighley and Haworth plus the heritage train journey mentioned (based on two sharing).

Still missing Happy Valley? Fans are queuing up for an extra slice of the much-loved BBC drama and booking Yorkshire holiday tours around Calderdale after series three came to a mind-blowing end in front of 7.5million viewers.

Sunderland-based travel agencies have revealed that fans are paying £339 per person to be given a tour of the show's filming locations, which launched last week.

"We had a look at it and came up with a route that will take in all the key filming locations. It's gone mad. We've had 50 bookings in six days.

"People want to see where their favourite shows were filmed - you don't get much bigger than Happy Valley."

"But we do have issues with parking [in Hebden Bridge], we are a narrow valley with a single road going through it. We really encourage people to come by public transport."

Happy Valley fans are queueing up to book tickets for a five-day tour of the hit BBC crime drama's filming locations.

The much-loved show is filmed primarily in Halifax , Sowerby Bridge , Hebden Bridge and Ripponden, all in Calderdale , as well as bits in Huddersfield and on the edge of Bradford .

Touring all the locations in the order they appear on screen would be time-consuming and illogical. They're often spread out and other locations sometimes stand in for other real places for example the Sheffield scenes were not shot in the Steel City, but in Halifax and erm... Bolton.

Thankfully, The TV tour organiser, Tates Travel, has done all the hard work for you and is now offering a five-day tour that promises all the most iconic locations from Sergeant Catherine Cawood's house to the spectacular views of the Upper Calder Valley enjoyed by Tommy Lee Royce following his escape.

The Sunderland -based operator is offering four summer dates between June and September and due to unprecedented demand, more could be added.

Thrilled Lisa Halliday, a partner at the business, said: “We’ve done loads of themed tours in the past. But as soon as Happy Valley finished we were getting calls from fans asking us if we’d do the same for them. We had a look at it and came up with a route that will take in all the key filming locations.

“It’s gone mad. We’ve had 50 bookings in six days. People want to see where their favourite shows were filmed — you don’t get much bigger than Happy Valley.” It comes after the explosive final episode of the third series drama drew an incredible 7.5million viewers.

The Happy Valley bus tour will set you back £339 with Tates Travel, the tour begins where the programme was set in Hebden Bridge before moving on to Sowerby Bridge.

It will stop at the old post office which was transformed into the police station for the show, before ending with a walkabout in Halifax.

Hebden Bridge councillor Sarah Courtney said the town has seen a huge rise in visitors since the third series aired. She said: “It’s fun to watch and recognise the places. We welcome the tourism.”

Big ticket fun makes Happy Valley one of the top places to live

By Cara Aungst

Happy Valley just ranked as one of the top places to live in the United States, again. The Livability rating was based on economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital, education and health care. But what the study did not take into account is the pinch-me level of big ticket fun that’s happening all year ‘round. And now that Arts Fest and 4th Fest are behind us, we’re counting down the days until home game Saturdays, and all the great fall food and entertainment that comprises the Happy Valley experience. Here’s what’s coming up!

Trekking in Morocco: Happy Valley in High Atlas

8 days | take an adventure through the central high atlas mountains of morocco on foot.

Traveller hiking on the M'goun Valley in Morocco

Discover Morocco’s best kept secret with this 8-day walking and hiking trip through the Happy Valley – or Ait Bougmez in the Central High Atlas Mountains. Running along the M’goun Massif, this is home to Morocco’s third-highest mountain peak – Jebel M’goun. Traversing through rural villages, ancient ruins, lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls and fields of grain, you’ll learn about the rich culture of the Amazigh people, the history of dinosaurs who once lived here and why sometimes, exploring on foot is the only way to witness the authenticity of a place bursting with stories. Enjoy homecooked meals and stay in traditional mountain gites, while you make your way through the villages and towns of Ait Imi, Ifrane, Arous, Agouti and lakeside Bin El Ouidane – ending it all in bustling Marrakech.

Trip overview

  • Enjoy a hiking holiday in arguably the most beautiful valley in the Central High Atlas Mountains – Ait Bougmez or Happy Valley. This is Morocco’s best-kept secret.
  • Rub shoulders with the local Amazigh people who call this mountain valley their home, by staying in authentic gites (mountain homes) and sharing home-cooked meals with countless cups of Moroccan tea.
  • Explore the community granary of Sidi Chita – a ruin of the holy house of Marabout (a Muslim holy man or hermit) located on the hill with sweeping views of the valley below.
  • Trek through small rural villages, cereal crops and under the shade of hundred-year-old walnut trees, where the welcoming locals will greet you into their world, sharing stories and culture.
  • Explore the famous Bin El Ouidane Lake, which forms one of the most picturesque landscapes in the area – by boat and hike. Then, enjoy a tasty lunch in the nearby White Water Gite.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Education for All. Donations help them support girls in the High Atlas Mountains through secondary school, bringing a generation of women out of the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and early marriage. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • This is a walking trip, so you should expect to be on your feet for most of the day. A good level of fitness will help you to enjoy the experience fully.
  • Once on the trek, you’ll spend most of the nights in atmospheric gites – a traditional Amazigh-style mud-brick building. They’re basic, but half of their charm comes from the simplicity. Low ceilings, traditional artwork and locally made furniture add to the rustic mountain vibe.

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Morocco. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight, where you'll meet your fellow trekkers and trip leader. After, you might like to join your leader on a jaunt to Djemaa el-Fna Square in the centre of the medina. Huge crowds converge at night to see the singers, drummers, fortune tellers, dancers and bustling street food bazaars all vying for attention here. This square is one of the largest public meeting places in the world, so you’re sure to find something that catches your eye tonight.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

After breakfast this morning, say goodbye to Marrakech and take a private transfer towards the orange hills of Denmate. When you arrive in Denmate, you’ll stop for lunch at the Imi n’Ifri Natural Bridge. Then, continue your journey into the Atlas Mountains. Stop for a short walk through Ait Bou Oulli – a small town and commune in the Azilal Province with traditional red-hued houses among rolling red-dirt hills. Drive through an impressive 2700 m mountain col before heading down to the valley of Ait Abbas and arriving at your lodge in the commune village of Arous. The Arous Valley feels like an untouched gem, with the rugged terrain flanked by towering mountains and dotted with shrubbery. Take a free evening to explore on foot or relax, then join your group to swap stories over dinner.

  • Gite (1 night)
  • Aarous - Ait Abbas valley to Aarous village guided hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

This morning, begin your trekking adventure with a few small trails in the fields of Ait Bougmez – coined by the French as Happy Valley. The valley is home to Morocco’s third-highest peak – Jebel M’goun, which runs along the M’goun Massif in the Central High Atlas Mountains. Passing from village to village, you’ll hike quietly in the shade of the walnut and apple trees that make up the richness of this valley’s landscape. In the village of Idoukalen, you’ll be invited to enjoy a delicious mint tea (or several) by the collective granary of Sidi Chita – a stone ruin that was once a holy house of Marabout (a Muslim holy man or hermit) that stands on the hill, overlooking a beautiful view of the valley. These community granaries were built in Morocco to protect the yearly harvest from floods and other natural disasters and are still used today throughout the country. The locals here are very welcoming, so this is a good chance to connect, ask about their lives in the mountains and share a moment of connection. Walk to Aguerd n'Ouzrou, where your leader will point out the ancient traces of dinosaurs – before settling into your gite (mountain home) for the night in the village of Ait Imi.

  • Ait Imi - Idoukalen village tea stop
  • Ait Imi - Happy Valley: Aarous to Ait Imi guided hike
  • Ait Imi - Sidi Chita granary visit

Your trekking time today will be approximately 5 to 6 hours.

This morning, continue your adventure through the mountains. Stop at the village of Dibaqliwen for a visit to the most intriguing dinosaur tracks in Morocco. Learn about the history of this land from your local tour leader, then continue your journey into the pastoral world of local shepherds and their herds of goats and sheep. Walk to a high pass in the small chain of Adazen to the other side of the Happy Valley before arriving in the small village of Ifrane. Here, you’ll stay in another traditional gite, enjoying dinner with your group and spending the night.

  • Ifrane - Dinosaur remains site visit
  • Ifrane - Happy Valley: Ait Imi to Ifrane guided hike

Your trekking time today will be approximately 6 hours.

This morning after breakfast, appreciate the landscape of Ifrane once more and then set off for the day’s adventure. Descend the valley on the bank of Ait Hkem and wander across several villages where the cereal culture remains strong. Your trek will take you through the many grain and cereal crops under the shade of hundred-year-old walnut trees. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to meet the locals who live here, learning about their way of life and rich culture. Stop for lunch along the way. After, take a transfer to the village of Agouti, where you’ll have a group dinner and spend the night.

  • Agouti - Happy Valley: Ifrane to Agouti guided hike

Your trekking time today will be approximately 4.5 to 5 hours.

After breakfast this morning, you’ll be transferred to picturesque Bin El Ouidane – a small town surrounding a striking blue lake and dam of the same name. Head to the White Water gite for a delicious Moroccan lunch with your group, then head out on a scenic walk around the reservoir, enjoying the beautiful views surrounding you. Then, see the landscape from a different perspective. Tonight, you’ll enjoy a group dinner before heading to your hotel for the night.

  • Bin el Ouidane - Reservoir Walk
  • Bin el Ouidane - Reservoir boat tour
  • Bin el Ouidane - White Water Gite lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

After breakfast this morning, depart the glittering blue reservoir town of Bin El Ouidane and begin your return journey. Along the way, you’ll visit the stunning Ouzoud waterfalls – a collective name for several cascades that empty into the Slaves’ River gorge. Walk around the waterfalls, take photos, and then continue your journey back to colourful Marrakech. When you arrive, you have the rest of the day free to explore, choose an optional activity or find a great café to sit and people-watch in the medina. Maybe head out with your group tonight to Djemaa el-Fna for a farewell dinner full of Moroccan street food favourites, like snail soup, tagine and couscous.

  • Marrakech - Ouzoud waterfalls visit

Your adventure ends after breakfast this morning. If you wish to spend more time in Marrakech, just speak to your booking agent.
