More about HCF travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does hcf offer.

HCF offers several different travel insurance policies, including:

  • International Comprehensive Plan: this policy covers you for a wide range of benefits on your international holiday, including overseas emergency assistance and hospital costs, your choice of cancellation cover, luggage and personal items and stolen cash. These policies are available to travellers of any age.
  • International Essentials Plan: this streamlined travel insurance policy covers you for the bare necessities when you’re taking a holiday overseas. While you’re covered for unlimited medical expenses and emergency assistance, you won’t be covered for the loss of travel documents, stolen cash, accidental death or the cost of organising alternate travel arrangements. Seniors over the age of 75 won’t be able to take out this policy.
  • Domestic Plan: holidaying a little closer to home? HCF offers a domestic travel insurance policy which covers you for accidental death, cancellation, emergency expenses and travel delays. You’re also covered if your bags are stolen or damaged, the excess on a rental vehicle and personal liability.
  • Multi-Trip: planning a few holidays over the year? HCF’s multi-trip policy is designed with frequent flyers in mind, offering cover for multiple holidays across 12 months. You'll be able to travel for between 15 and 45 days per trip and must nominate the duration of your longest holiday.
  • Non-Medical Plan: this type of policy covers you for most incidentals except for overseas emergency assistance and medical expenses. You’re still covered for cancellation, travel delays and additional expenses, however.

However, whether you’re flying to Cambodia or Canberra, comparing with us allows you to shortlist the policies which suit you so you can find the best travel insurance for your next trip with more confidence.

What optional extras are available through HCF?

HCF provides optional coverage to cover travellers taking a range of different domestic and international holidays. Some of the options you get include:

  • Adventure pack: some of the covered activities include abseiling, battle re-enactment, flying foxing, motorcycle or moped riding, moving target shooting and tandem parachuting. You’re also covered if you travel to Asia to trek the Kokoda Track. HCF limits this policy to those under 75.
  • Cruise pack: this add-on offers medical cover, evacuation and a raft of other benefits if you’re taking a domestic or international cruise. Some of the other areas of cover include cabin confinement, pre-paid shore excursion, formal wear and marine rescue diversion. You won’t need to purchase a policy if you’re taking a river cruise or sailing on a vessel that doesn’t have onboard accommodation.
  • Snow pack: if you’re under the age of 75, you can purchase this snow pack which allows you to be covered if you’re taking part in a range of winter sports , including skiing, snowboarding, tubing or tobogganing. You’re only covered along groomed terrain and marked slopes and won’t be covered for racing, stunting or jumping.

HCF also gives you the option of paying a higher premium to increase the claimable limit on valuable goods, such as laptops, cameras or mobile phones. The top value you can insure your goods for is $7,000, or $14,000 if you’re taking out a family travel insurance policy.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through HCF?

Travel insurance doesn’t cover absolutely everything and policies usually feature some general exclusions. Some of HCF’s include:

  • Flying in a privately-charted aircraft
  • Taking part in activities outside of the Adventure Pack cover
  • Undisclosed pre-existing medical conditions
  • Intentionally acting recklessly or putting your safety at risk
  • Being admitted to a clinic for substance abuse issues
  • Ignoring Australian government ‘do not travel’ warnings
  • Elective surgery
  • Travelling against doctor’s advice
  • Accidents caused by alcohol or drug consumption

If you’ve found an international or domestic travel insurance policy that draws your eye, ensure you review HCF’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of HCF travel insurance

What we like, your choice of cancellation cover.

HCF gives you the option of coverage between $2,000 and $20,000 for needing to unexpectedly cancel or reschedule your trip. You can also opt for unlimited coverage in this area.

Plenty of extras

As far as optional extras go, HFC allows you to take out a range of add-ons for cruises, adventure activities and snow sports.

Substantial base-level coverage

In most cases, travel insurers offering ‘the essentials’ scrimp on the benefits. However, HCF offers many of the same benefits as the comprehensive policy albeit with lesser claim limits.

What we don't like

Limited pregnancy cover.

Pregnant travellers are only covered up to their 24th week of gestation, whereas many other providers will cover you up to your 26th or even 30th week.

Caps on age

If you’re over 75, you can purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy with HCF, but you won’t be able to purchase a lower level of cover or the adventure or snow add-ons.

Short cooling-off period

Many travel insurance companies on the market will allow you a cooling-off period of up to three weeks. However, HCF only provides you two weeks to cancel your policy at no cost.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about HCF travel insurance

HCF’s PDS stipulates while it doesn’t cover epidemics or pandemics, it does cover you for certain COVID-19-related costs, such as medical expenses overseas or the expense of rearranging your travel plans.

If you need to file a claim on your travel insurance , HCF allows you do to this online or over the phone. If you have your policy number and personal details at hand, HCF requires you to provide copies of receipts, medical or police reports and your travel itinerary. HCF says it can take up to ten working days to process a claim.

How much you’ll pay for your travel insurance varies depending on several factors, including:

  • Your date of birth
  • Your chosen destination
  • The level of coverage you buy
  • Any optional extras you need
  • The policy excess you choose
  • The type of insurer and insurance policy you buy

Single-trip policies cover you for one holiday while an annual multi-trip policy provides you with cover for several holidays over 12 months. Annual multi-trip policies, such as those offered by HCF, include up to 45 days of travel per trip. On the other hand, one-way travel insurance policies cover you for taking a holiday when you don’t have a return ticket booked. Under these policies, you can usually opt for an extension of a year on your cover.

HCF Overseas Visitor Health Cover Review

Hcf ovhc: australia's biggest not-for-profit health fund, but there are cheaper policies out there..

Avatar

In this guide

HCF visa policies currently on offer

Hcf ovhc: our verdict, what types of health insurance does hcf ovhc offer, hcf health insurance complaints, hcf member retention, hcf ovhc frequently asked questions.

Overseas Health

Overseas funds

HCF is Australia's largest not-for-profit health fund , meaning any money it makes goes back to its members. It offers different levels of overseas visitor health insurance (OVHC) so you can choose to pay as little as possible and simply meet visa requirements or opt for a more comprehensive policy.

  • With a range of policies, it's good if you want either the bare minimum to meet your visa requirements or peace of mind with something more comprehensive.
  • You're going with a trusted fund — HCF is the third-largest health insurer by market share in Australia and the biggest not-for-profit health fund.
  • There are cheaper policies available. Cover starts from around $74.50 per month — that's $10 less than Frank Basic Workers Cover. But you won't need to pay an excess if you go to hospital.
  • Working Visas Cover Options
  • Non-Working Visas Cover Options

HCF is good if:

  • You want to meet your visa requirements.
  • You want to go with a not-for-profit.
  • You want lots of options.

HCF is not great if:

  • You aren't interested that it's a not-for-profit insurer.

Review by our insurance and innovations editor Gary Ross Hunter

Working visitors

HCF offers these 4 packages:

  • Basic. HCF Overseas Visitor Basic policy covers you for emergency ambulance rehabilitation and palliative care, emergency department facility fees, medical repatriation and funeral expenses, and all services where a benefit would be payable under Medicare, the Australian public healthcare system.
  • Mid. This provides similar services to a Basic policy but higher limits on some services. For example, you'll get up to $100,000 for medical repatriation, compared to $50,000 with a Basic policy.
  • Top. Comprehensive cover for overseas visitors. As well as hospital care, you'll get cover for extras services including dental, optical, therapies such as physio and natural therapies like acupuncture.
  • Top Plus. The most comprehensive cover HCF offers for visitors, you'll get all the benefits included in previous policies, plus up to $110,000 for medical repatriation and $20,000 for return of mortal remains or funeral expenses.

Private contract

Holiday and working holiday cover

  • Short stay. Short Stay is HCF's most affordable policy. It's designed for healthy singles and couples and covers you for everything that Medicare covers (except pre-existing conditions). This includes doctors' fees, some prescriptions and emergency ambulance services.
  • Essentials. Essentials includes all Medicare-covered treatments, heart surgery, hip and knee replacement and more. Cover also included doctors' fees, PBS medicines, and emergency ambulance transport.
  • Essentials Plus. Essentials Plus covers doctors' fees both in and out of hospital. You'll also get cover for accommodation, medicines during and after your hospital stay, emergency ambulance transport and a range of other hospital services, including cataracts.

Ambulance icon

Ambulance coverage

All HCF OVHC policies cover emergency ambulance transportation. This includes on-the-spot treatment and inter-hospital transfers when the original hospital doesn't have the required clinical facilities.

We looked at the 2021 ombudsman health insurance complaints. Here's how HCF stacked up:

  • Proportionally, HCF had the highest percentage complaints compared to the other big health funds .
  • HCF ranked 2nd worst for number of complaints compared to market share of funds with more than 0.5% market share.

This chart shows the weighted volume of complaints received by each health fund, according to the Commonwealth Ombudsman. The lower the number, the better. Only non-restricted funds with a national market share of at least 0.1% are included here. HCF is eighteenth overall in this ranking. The weighting ensures that funds are compared fairly ; larger funds serve more customers so can potentially get more complaints.

Full table of data

This chart shows the member retention for each health fund with a market share of at least 0.5%, according to the Commonwealth Ombudsman. A higher member retention percentage may suggest customers are happy with the service they're receiving; a lower percentage could mean customers aren't happy with the fund's service. HCF had the highest member retention (88%) followed by HBF (86%).

Are there any additional benefits?

  • Pet Insurance. HCF Pet Insurance, issued by The Hollard Insurance Company, is available at a 15% discount for HCF members.
  • 100% back on extras. HCF gives you up to 100% back on a range of extras treatments for eyes, teeth, muscles, backs, feet and hearing aids.
  • Dental and eyecare centres. HCF operates a network of dental and eyecare centres across metropolitan Sydney.
  • Healthy Weight for Life program. This 18-week program helps you reach your weight goals and maintain that healthy weight.

What am I not covered for with HCF OVHC?

There are certain situations when your HCF Overseas Visitors Health Cover policy will not provide protection. These include:

  • Ambulance transport by a provider not recognised by HCF
  • Ambulance transported where you are covered under another scheme, for example a state ambulance subscription service
  • Your claim is for a treatment specifically excluded from your policy
  • Your claim is for treatment received while you are serving a waiting period
  • You can recover the costs from a third party other than HCF, for example from workers' compensation insurance
  • It is for experimental treatments or treatment not deemed suitable by HCF
  • It is for goods or services that are delivered outside Australia, or for treatment that is not delivered face-to-face

It's also worth pointing out that this policy is not available for visitors who hold a:

  • Student visa
  • Tourist visa
  • Retiree visa not listed above

Finally, keep in mind that waiting periods will apply for certain treatments and procedures. For example, a 12-month waiting period before you can receive cover for the treatment of pre-existing conditions or pregnancy and birth-related services.

How long will I need to wait to receive hospital treatment for a pre-existing condition?

A 12-month waiting period applies to pre-existing conditions. Otherwise, there's no waiting period for services covered by Medicare. There's a 2-month waiting period for rehab, palliative care and psychiatric services.

How can I apply for cover?

You can apply for HCF Overseas Visitors Health Cover online, via email, by phoning HCF or by visiting a HCF branch.

What excess options are available with HCF Overseas Visitors Health Cover?

You can choose a $0 or $250 excess – the higher the excess you choose, the lower your premiums will be.

Agreements are in place with Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. Visit the Department of Human Services online for more information about these agreements.

Tips for Staying Active while Traveling

Staying active while traveling is crucial for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. It can help you stay energized, relieve stress, and make the most out of your adventure. Whether you’re on an active holiday or exploring new places, here are some tips to keep you active and healthy:

1. Embrace the Opportunities

Take advantage of the opportunities that come your way. If you’re on an active holiday like skiing or hiking, you’re already engaging in physical activity. But even if you’re not, seize the chance to be active. Go for walking tours, explore new places through running, or simply take the stairs instead of the elevator. Every small step counts!

2. Prepare with Strength Training

Preparing for your holiday by incorporating strength training into your fitness routine can help you conquer various physical activities. Focus on exercises that build your leg and core strength, such as squats, lunges, and planks. This will prepare you for climbing stairs, hiking trails, and other physically demanding activities you may encounter on your trip.

3. Check Your Travel Insurance Coverage

Before your trip, it’s important to review your travel insurance coverage to ensure it covers the activities you plan to engage in. Some adventurous activities may require additional coverage, so it’s better to be prepared and have peace of mind. HCF Travel Insurance provides comprehensive coverage, including medical emergencies, so you can enjoy your activities with confidence.

4. Get Necessary Travel Vaccinations

Prior to your journey, make sure you’re up-to-date with your travel vaccinations . Consult with your doctor or a travel health specialist to determine which vaccinations are recommended for your destination. Protecting yourself from potential health risks is essential for a safe and healthy trip.

By staying active, preparing for physical challenges, checking your insurance coverage, and getting necessary vaccinations, you can make the most out of your travels while keeping yourself healthy and safe. Remember to always listen to your body, take breaks when needed, and enjoy the journey!

Importance of Travel Vaccinations

When it comes to traveling, ensuring your health and safety should be a top priority. That’s why getting the necessary travel vaccinations is crucial. Vaccinations protect you from potentially harmful diseases that you may encounter during your trip. Whether you’re traveling to a developing country or a popular tourist destination, it’s essential to have your vaccinations up to date.

According to Dr. Joe Pollak, medical director of the Travel Vaccination Clinic, common vaccinations for travelers include hepatitis A and typhoid fever shots. These vaccinations can safeguard your well-being and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. It’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or visit a travel clinic to determine which vaccinations are required or recommended for your specific destination.

“Staying up to date with your vaccinations is an important step in protecting your health while traveling.”

HCF Travel Insurance understands the importance of travel vaccinations . Depending on the level of cover, HCF members may be able to claim for some vaccinations. It’s essential to check your policy and consult with your insurer regarding coverage for travel vaccinations.

Additionally, it’s crucial to carry enough medication for your trip and have a letter from your specialist explaining why you need the medication. Being prepared and taking the necessary precautions will help ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

HCF Private Health Insurance Review

Updated: Jan 12, 2023, 1:27pm

While HCF prides itself on being Australia’s largest not-for-profit health fund and on the many awards it has won over its 90 years, its data shows that it is falling behind in comparison to other health insurance providers. At current, HCF is best for hospital-only policies, but is lacking in terms of customer satisfaction.

  • Good member retention rate on hospital-only policies
  • Customer service is available on weekends
  • 90.8% of hospital-related charges covered by HCF
  • Some policies can only be taken out in conjunction with others
  • All pre-existing medical conditions, including extras, have a 12-month waiting period
  • High proportion of complaints investigated by the Ombudsman in comparison to market share

HCF Private Health Insurance

Table of Contents

About hcf health insurance, what is covered, will hcf cover me for the hospital, hcf complaints, customer service.

HCF positions itself as Australia’s largest not-for-profit health fund, occupying a market share of 11.9% at the time of writing–equating to around 1.8 million members nationwide.

Operating since 1932, HCF has celebrated 90 years in business as of 2022. In that time, it has worked to provide “quality cover and healthcare” to its members, and has the “ability to focus on what matters” thanks to having no shareholders, it explains online.

Along with health insurance, HCF also offers life, pet, and travel insurance. Its health insurance policies have received an average ranking of 2.9 stars out of 5 on Product Review, with poor customer service often noted as the reason behind low review scores.

As with any health insurance, what is covered by HCF will depend predominantly on the type of cover you choose, and the tier of coverage you take out.

HCF’s most basic hospital-only policy provides cover for a range of hospital treatments, including those relating to brain, eyes, ears, nose and throat. While the basic policy also covers miscarriage or termination of birth, policyholders must have HCF Hospital Premium Gold for pregnancy and birth cover, or a related ‘My Family’ policy.

The My Family policies, however, are conditional to also having extras cover taken out in conjunction with the hospital cover. For example, the HCF My Family Silver Plus Hospital can is only available to those who also have HCF My Family Silver Plus Extras cover.

Many other policies also include this condition, whether for family-related needs or not. It is therefore essential that an individual checks they are not paying for two separate policies due to this clause, when they might be paying for cover they don’t need or want.

Additionally, while emergency ambulance services are covered by all hospital policies, HCF also has ambulance-only policies available for members.

A waiting period applies when you take out a health insurance policy, which is a period of time before you can make claims to the provider. In line with the usual industry standard, HCF has a waiting period of two months for most services–whether hospital or extras.

However, pre-existing conditions that require hospital treatment or services that fall under an extras policy have a 12-month waiting period. Pregnancy and childbirth also have a 12-month wait, as does major dental work.

While some health insurance providers will waive these waiting periods via promotions, HCF does not currently offer such a discount.

No gap policy

While a health insurer will often cover some or even majority of a service fee, you will still have to pay something out of your own pocket–known as a gap payment.

A ‘no gap policy’, however, refers to the amount that your private health insurer will pay on your behalf for a consultation, treatment or surgery, thereby leaving you with no out-of-pocket costs.

At HCF, 88.8% of its services have a no-gap policy, after accounting for insurer benefits, schemes and agreements. Additionally, HCF has a list of ‘More for You’ extras providers, which allows eligible members to receive 100% back on selected extras services such as dental, optical and physio.

Yes. If you have HCF hospital cover, you will be covered for the hospital–depending on how the tier of coverage you have relates to your condition.

As mentioned earlier, pregnancy and birth cover is only covered on certain, higher-tiered policies. The same is true for many other conditions and procedures, such as rehabilitation or joint replacements.

However, in comparison to other health insurance providers, HCF’s most basic hospital-only policy covers a much wider range of conditions than most, varying from palliative care to lung and chest ailments.

When it comes to hospital-only policies, HCF has a member retention rate of 88%. Additionally, out of all of the hospital-related charges claimed by HCF members Australia-wide, a total of 90.8% were covered.

What about dental, physio or optical?

Most Australians expect dental, physio and optical services to be included in their extras cover when taking out health insurance.

Unfortunately, at HCF, its most basic ‘Starters Extra’ policy does not include these three services. It also doesn’t cover some general dental treatments, such as indirect fillings or surgical extractions.

HCF’s Top Extras policy, in comparison, includes podiatry, speech pathology, hearing aids and more.

Regardless of the tier, out of all general treatment services available to claim from HCF, 52.6% are covered by the insurer’s benefits.

Are there any further discounts?

HCF is not currently offering any further discounts to its existing members or new members. It is, however, giving new members a chance to win prizes if they take out a HCF policy, such as a $10,000 holiday voucher or a $7500 grocery voucher.

Of all complaints investigated by the Ombudsman across the entire health insurance industry, a total of 17.8% were complaints regarding HCF. When viewed in comparison to HCF’s market share (11.9%), it is clear that members of HCF are more likely to complain about HCF–and escalate these complaints to the Ombudsman–than they would be about a health insurance provider of a similar size.

HCF prides itself on its customer service, acknowledging on its website the many awards it has received in this field. Unlike many other providers, HCF is also open for customer service queries on the weekends between 9-5, and during the week from 8am-8pm.

As mentioned, however, a lot of the negative reviews from HCF customers are in regards to poor customer service.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is hcf private health insurance.

Yes, HCF is an unlisted public company that offers private health insurance.

Are HCF and HBF the same health insurance provider?

No, HBF and HCF are two different private health funds.

Back in 2018, WA-based HBF had planned to merge with HCF on the east side of Australia to “make the company one of the nation’s biggest industry funds”, in a deal tipped to be worth as much as $4 billion .

According to the ABC, HBF and HCF planned to retain their individual identities and continue to be run under individual management, which would sit under a new umbrella company guided by a common board of 10 directors.

“The merger is a logical fit, given both funds’ not-for-profit structure and member-first approach,” a media release on the proposed merger read.

However, by June 2018, HBF pulled out of the planned merger .

What is HCF’s contact number?

HCF can be contacted for general enquiries at 13 13 34 between the hours of 8am-8pm Monday to Friday, or 9am-5pm on weekends. To make a payment over the phone, members can call 13 14 39 during the same time frames.

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: the higher the excess the lower the cost.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Product Disclosure Statement to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Product Disclosure Statement  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Product Disclosure Statement  .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .
