Houston Open moves to PGA's spring schedule beginning in 2024, to stick around through at least 2028

Adam Winkler Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Open, the city's longtime PGA Tour event, is not going anywhere, but it will be making a move.

On Wednesday, the Astros Golf Foundation announced the Houston Open will move to a spring date in 2024 and be part of the PGA Tour's schedule. Additionally, the Astros Golf Foundation has extended its agreement with the City of Houston and the PGA Tour through 2028.

The 2024 Houston Open will mark the first time the tournament, while under the leadership of the Astros Golf Foundation, will have a spring date. The event was held in November from 2019 to 2022 .

"This is a great day for the Houston Open and a great day for the City of Houston," Astros Golf Foundation President Giles Kibbe said. "We are moving back to the PGA's prime schedule and we are back on national TV. We are positioned to continue doing great things for the City of Houston and so many local charities."

The PGA Tour's Houston Open is the single largest fundraiser for the Astros Foundation and also benefits the City of Houston, First Tee of Greater Houston and countless local charities. About $3.5 million were given back to the greater Houston community following the 2022 tournament.

PREVIOUS REPORT: Houston Open, once in doubt, lands spring date, source tells ABC13

Due to the shift, the Houston Open will not be held in 2023. The tournament will remain at Memorial Park.

"We have a full year now to really work on that course," Kenneth Allen, director of Houston's Parks and Recreation Department, told ABC13. "We've done some wonderful things with the Astros. To maintain a PGA course and allow everyday golfers to experience that is a wonderful opportunity to the everyday golfer."

For his part, Mayor Sylvester Turner gave credit where credit's due.

"The return of the Houston Open to the City of Houston and to the PGA Tour's spring schedule is something I have advocated for and supported since I became mayor," Turner said in a statement. "The fact that it happened so quickly must be credited to Astros owner Jim Crane and is a testament to what can be accomplished by a true public and private partnership and this community's support of the Astros Golf Foundation, which raised $34 million to renovate the Memorial Park Golf Course and improve its facilities."

The new spring date has yet to be announced, but ABC13 was told the Houston Open is expected to replace the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, which was held annually two weeks before The Masters. The 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play took place on March 20.

After eight years, Austin is losing the event, and Houston is expected to benefit.

"It's a really good course. It's a hard golf course and the better players love it," Kibbe added. "If we get this positioned right on that date, we're going to have a lot of the top players here."

Last year, just eight of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings played the Houston Open.

The PGA Tour heads to Texas, as Scottie Scheffler and Wyndham Clark headline the field for this week’s Texas Children’s Houston Open .

Since 2020, this tournament has been held at Memorial Park Golf Course, a municipal course revitalized by Tom Doak in 2019. Brooks Koepka even served as an advisor during the renovation.

The course reportedly hosts 60,000 players per year, thus drawing comparisons to the likes of Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black—two major championship-caliber courses where daily fees are affordable for locals.

Houston residents can play Memorial Park for as little as $30 on weekdays, while out-of-towners have to fork over $120—not a bad price considering some of the best players in the world play there annually.

New this year is the tournament’s spot on the calendar. When defending champion Tony Finau won at Memorial Park, he did so in the fall of 2022. But since the WGC-Dell Technology Match Play was removed from the PGA Tour schedule this year, an opening popped up, and the Texas Children’s Open filled that void two weeks before The Masters.

Funny enough, before 2019, when this event moved to the fall, the Houston Open was played the week before the best players headed to Augusta National . Whoever won this event typically received the final invitation into The Masters.

Now it’s back in the spring, and the winner, if not already exempt, will receive an invite to Augusta.

Houston open officially returns to pga tour's spring schedule, signs new sponsor in texas children's, share this article.

houston pga tour event

Just a handful of months after putting the final pile of dirt on the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, a fellow Texas tournament has slid back into the Austin event’s slot in the PGA Tour’s spring schedule.

Tour officials announced on Wednesday that the Houston Open will be held March 28-31, marking the first time since 2018 the event will be in the spring rotation. The Valero Texas Open in San Antonio is expected to maintain its position as the following week’s event, leading into the Masters.

According to an announcement from the Tour and Astros Golf Foundation, the tournament has also secured a long-term agreement with Texas Children’s, the largest pediatric and women’s health system in the nation. The agreement is for five years.

“We are excited to announce our partnership with Texas Children’s as the title sponsor for the Houston Open,” said Jim Crane, Houston Astros Owner and Chairman. “We couldn’t have asked for a better partner as we continue our mission of giving back to the greater Houston community. Aligning their values with the efforts of our Astros Golf Foundation provides a special opportunity for both organizations to continue to give back to our community, to grow the game of golf, and to provide a platform to help those most in need.”

The event moved from the private Golf Club of Houston to the municipal Memorial Park in 2020 after significant investment from Crane, who funneled enough cash into the muni track to get esteemed designer Tom Doak on board, with Brooks Koepka as a player advisor.

Memorial Park had always been the crown jewel of the Houston public golf scene. Originally built as a nine-hole course in 1912, an extensive redesign by John Bredemus (who had co-founded the Texas Professional Golfers Association in 1922) led to its “official” 18-hole opening in 1936.

From 1947 to 1963, the course hosted a PGA Tour event 14 times. Arnold Palmer won it once and Jack Nicklaus had a second-place finish. Famously, 1965 PGA Championship winner Dave Marr asked that his ashes be spread at Memorial Park — even though he never won there, he credited the track for shaping his career.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, we are thankful to Texas Children’s for their commitment to one of the Tour’s legacy events in the Houston Open, a tournament that dates back to 1946,” said PGA Tour President Tyler Dennis. “The Houston Open has played a significant role in shaping the PGA Tour’s history through its competitive lineage with golf’s greats playing and winning the event as well as an unwavering commitment to bettering the community. This partnership between the Astros Golf Foundation and Texas Children’s has the opportunity to take the tournament to new heights, most notably in its ability to impact the lives of families in Houston and throughout Texas.”

Golfweek previously reported that Crane was leveraging the emergence of LIV Golf as a potential suitor for a Houston event if he couldn’t get the spring PGA Tour date he desired.

Crane is an investor in Escalante Golf, which staged two LIV Golf events in the upstart circuit’s inaugural year – Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon and The International in Massachusetts – and then a third LIV event this season at The Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Arizona.

Crane, along with Giles Kibbe, senior vice president and general counsel for the Astros and president of the Astros Golf Foundation, played in the pro-am at LIV’s Boston event.

Houston is one of the largest markets in the U.S., and the Tour certainly didn’t want to lose it. Despite the Houston Open being successful going up against football and on the heels of a steady stream of baseball playoff games in recent years, Crane reportedly was no longer willing to support a golf tournament in the fall.

Tony Finau captured the Houston last November, and the event will not be staged in 2023 as it prepares for its return to the spring. The tournament will be televised on NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock, and PGA Tour Live on ESPN+.

Excitement as houston open returns to springtime spot on pga tour calendar.

Organizers are hoping for 100,000 tickets to be sold over the four days of the tournament, which is settling into its home at Memorial Park.

Houston Open press conference

Leaders were in a celebratory mood Wednesday at Memorial Park ahead of the PGA Tour's Texas Children’s Houston Open.

It's been a challenging few years for the tournament, which runs Thursday through Sunday. But a move from undesired dates in the fall and back to the spring ahead of the Masters had everyone involved in the event excited for this weekend and the future.

"This is the ultimate time we wanted to play," said Jim Crane, Houston Astros owner. The Astros Golf Foundation took over operating the event a half-decade ago.

"It's kind of a dream come true,” Crane added. “It took a lot of work."

Under Crane's leadership, tournament officials worked to revitalize the event after it lost its longtime sponsor, Shell.

"I go back to 2018, 2019, my conversations with Jim, his proactive phone calls at that point in time," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan recounted on Wednesday. "The PGA Tour and our longstanding history in Houston was in jeopardy. He said, ‘I'll tell you one thing, the PGA Tour is going to stay in Houston and I'm going to be the one that's going to make that happen.'"

The Houston Open moved away from its suburban locales and back to Memorial Park. The Astros Golf Foundation spent more than $30 million to renovate the public course located inside the loop to get it PGA-certified and able to host the Open beginning in 2020.

"I was cynical, Jim, that you could pull it off because of competing interests. But it's just again a reflection of our can-do attitude," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire, who said he lives nearby and closely watched the renovations and seeing how the public could retain access to the park.

In recent years, Crane and others worked with PGA Tour leaders to get the tournament back to its springtime date. Their wishes became official last year when the tour announced it would move the Houston Open to a late March slot on the calendar. It also announced a new five-year title sponsorship deal with Texas Children’s Hospital

"You've got some big names here, which will help draw more," Crane said.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who attended the University of Texas and now lives in Dallas, headlines the field. Eight of the top 25 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings are also participating.

PGA Tour and Houston Open officials hope as more golfers play in the tournament, good word of mouth and favorable reviews will bring in even more top names in future years.

That should drive attendance, which was smaller in recent years due to the fall date. Organizers are hoping for 100,000 tickets to be sold over the four days of the tournament.

"Ticket sales are up, we should have some solid weather and get everybody out there," Crane said.

"It's Easter, so everybody's going to be hopping."

PGA Tour announces new sponsor for Houston Open; tournament officially moving back to spring

1244762896

Icon Sportswire

The PGA Tour and the Astros Golf Foundation announced Wednesday that Texas Children’s will be the new title sponsor of the Houston Open.

The event, which has been played in the fall the past four years, is also returning to its historical spot on the spring calendar. Because of the move, the tournament will not be contested in 2023 and instead restart in 2024.

The Houston Open traces its roots back to 1946, and counts Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Phil Mickelson and Tony Finau among its winners. Historically held in mid-spring, the tournament carved a niche with its pre-Masters spot in 2007, and Redstone Golf Club (now known as the Golf Club of Houston) underwent massive renovations to mirror Augusta National-like conditions. As such, Houston boasted a notable field, filled with those seeking a last-minute tune-up. But the Shell Oil Company, which had underwritten the tournament for 25 years, declined to renew title sponsorship after 2017. Weeks after the tournament was held in 2018 without a sponsor, the Golf Club of Houston told the Houston Golf Association, which ran the tournament, that it no longer intended to serve as the competition's venue.

However, local magnate and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane was working behind the scenes to make sure the tournament didn't fold. He, along with several Houston officials, approached the PGA Tour with a plan to take over the event from the HGA. The tournament moved to Memorial Park, a public course in the city limits that first hosted the Houston Open in 1947 and returned as host from 1951 to 1965. Crane's foundation hired architect Tom Doak to spearhead a renovation of the facility. For good measure, Brooks Koepka was tabbed to serve as the PGA Tour player consultant. Memorial Park is expected to continue to host the tournament well into the future.

“We are excited to announce our partnership with Texas Children’s as the title sponsor for the Houston Open,” Crane said.

The full 2024 PGA Tour schedule is expected to be released within the month.

2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

W ith the Florida Swing wrapped up, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open . This is the 4th year Memorial Park will host the event, which is headlined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler .

Below, we look at the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Having won his last 2 starts, Scheffler will look to make it 3 wins in a row this week in Houston. He's the odds-on favorite to win at +275, by far the shortest odds of any player in the field. Wyndham Clark has the 2nd-best odds at +1200, followed by Will Zalatoris (+1800), Sabith Theegala (+2200) and 2023 champion Tony Finau (+2200).

Memorial Park is a par 70 and plays at 7,435 yards, so it's one of the longer courses on tour. It underwent a major renovation in 2019, which is when the PGA Tour returned to this site, with everything from hole distances changing to bunkers and trees being removed. Scheffler and Finau share the course record of 8-under 62, which Scheffler shot in 2021 and Finau carded in 2022.

Texas Children's Houston Open – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:32 p.m. ET.

Will Zalatoris (+1800)

Zalatoris' missed cut at the Players Championship was surprising, but it shouldn't be enough to deter bettors from taking him again this week in Houston. He typically plays well when the conditions are tough, as evidenced by his major finishes, and while he's never played this event before, it's a good bounce-back opportunity for him at a course that emphasizes ball striking over putting.

Sahith Theegala (+2200)

Theegala finished 61st and 22nd in his 2 starts at this event, but it's reasonable to think he'll improve upon both of those finishes this year. He's in the midst of his best season yet, already posting 4 top-10s and a runner-up in 8 starts with only 1 missed cut. Theegala is just the type of player who can unseat Scheffler at the top.

Keith Mitchell (+4000)

Mitchell had the Valspar Championship in his hands before collapsing in the final round with a 77 on Sunday. That dropped him from 1st to 17th on the last day of the tournament after holding a 2-shot 54-hole lead. That ending to his week will leave a bitter taste in his mouth, but it was more of a fluky performance with the driver than anything. He finished 41st here in 2021 and 9th in 2022.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Contenders

Joel dahmen (+6600).

After missing the cut in 3 of his 1st 5 starts of the season, Dahmen has gotten back on track by making it in each of his last 3 starts – including an 11th-place finish at the Players Championship. He followed it up with a T-49 at the Valspar last week and now ranks 27th in strokes gained: off the tee and 8th in approach.

Aaron Rai (+5000)

Rai missed the cut at the Valspar Championship by a few shots but he had notched 3 straight top-35 finishes before that. His putter hasn't cooperated, ranking 136th in strokes gained on the greens but he's 23rd tee-to-green. This is a course he's had success at before, finishing 7th and 19th in his last 2 starts here.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Long shots

Alex smalley (+12500).

Smalley has missed the cut in 7 of his 9 starts this season and one of his made cuts resulted in a 75th-place finish. So why bet him now? Because he finished 4th in this tournament in 2022 and 15th the year prior, so he clearly knows this course well.

Tyson Alexander (+25000)

Peter Malnati showed on Sunday that no matter a player's odds, anyone can win at any time. Alexander is a mega-long shot at +30000, but he was the runner-up here in 2022 and already has 1 top-20 finish this season.

2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the cj cup byron nelson 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

jason-day-usatsi.jpg

The PGA Championship is just a few weeks away, so many of the big names in golf are sitting out of the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, which begins Thursday at 7:45 a.m. ET. However, with golfers like Jordan Spieth and Jason Day in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson field, there are still plenty of reasons to be excited about the TPC Craig Ranch-hosted event. Spieth is the 12-1 favorite in the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson odds, followed by Day (18-1), who is the defending champion. Si Woo Kim is third on the odds board at 22-1, while Sungjae Im, Alex Noren and Adam Scott are each in the next tier of 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson contenders at 25-1.

Spieth has finished second and ninth in his two professional starts at TPC Craig Ranch, so is he a golfer that you should target with your 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson bets? Before making any 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024: Day, the defending champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles and barely cracks the top five. Day got off to a hot start this season when he posted three top-10 finishes in his first five tournaments, but he has struggled since then. He has finished outside the top 15 in his last five events, including a missed cut at the Texas Children's Houston Open at the end of March.

Day ranks 183rd on the PGA Tour in approach shots from more than 200 yards, which will be a shot that he has to take throughout this tournament. He is also ranked 133rd in green in regulation percentage (63.62%) and 152nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.380). Day is not in strong form right now, so the model is looking elsewhere with its pick to win this tournament.

Another surprise: Maverick McNealy, a 50-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The former No. 1 ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking is still seeking his first win on the PGA Tour.

He is off to a strong start in 2024 though, making the cut in nine of his 11 events while posting a pair of top-10 finishes. McNealy finished T6 in the WM Phoenix Open in February, T13 in the Mexico Open and T9 in The Players Championship, which was the best result of his career. Despite his hot start to the year, he is still flying under the radar due to his lack of victories, making him an excellent longshot pick against a weaker field this weekend.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected CJ Cup Byron Nelson leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.

Rory McIlroy claims 25th PGA Tour victory, teaming with Shane Lowry to win Zurich Classic in a playoff

Rory McIlroy (left) and teammate Shane Lowry were all smiles after winning the PGA Zurich Classic golf tournament at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event Sunday, beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

Trainer pushed a 6-foot par putt to the right of the cup to end it, with Lowry and McIlroy sharing a smiling embrace on the green.

The 34-year-old McIlroy, playing in the event for the first time, won his 25th PGA Tour title and first of the season. Lowry claimed his third PGA Tour victory.

The Irish tandem closed with a 4-under-par 68 in the alternate-shot final round to match Ramey and Trainer at 25-under 263.

Ramey and Trainer began the day tied for 27th at 16 under and shot to the top of the leaderboard with nine birdies between the seventh and 18th holes. They tied the alternate-shot tournament record of 63, but then had to wait nearly three hours to see if their lead would stand up.

They struggled to execute on the playoff hole. Trainer pulled his drive into the left rough, Ramey also yanked his approach left off the cart path and into the wall below the suites around the 18th green. Trainer then chipped short before Ramey finally got his team on the green.

Lowry narrowly missed his mark twice on the playoff hole, putting an approach in a bunker and then leaving a birdie putt for the victory on the edge of the cup.

But Lowry came through when he had to on the 18th, forcing the playoff with a short birdie putt on the par-5 hole, capitalizing on McIlroy’s deft lofted chip from the apron that stopped close to the pin.

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard were nearly in the playoff as well. Needing a birdie, they went long off the 18th green on their second shot. Hubbard’s chip up the back apron stopped short on the fringe, but Brehm still nearly sank a birdie putt from there, leaving the ball near the right edge of the cup as the crowd gasped. They finished third at 24 under.

Former BYU teammates Patrick Fishburn and Zach Blair, the leaders after three rounds, were still tied for the lead heading to 17, only to make a double bogey after Blair’s tee shot landed right of the green and Fishburn chipped short. They wound up in a four-way tie for fourth at 23 under.

Defending champions Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin finished 10th after their final-round 71 left them at 21 under.

LPGA — Hannah Green won LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second straight year Sunday, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.

A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green — with help from Maja Stark — took the late drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour victory and second of the year.

“It’s really kind to me,” Green said about the course. “I felt like a couple times today almost got like a member bounce. I, obviously, really am fond of the golf club and joked that they didn’t approve it with me that they were making alterations. I love it here.”

Green closed with a 5-under 66 to beat Stark by three strokes. The 27-year-old Australian, also the winner early last month in Singapore, finished at 12-under 272 on the tree-lined layout with poa annua greens that become bumpy late in the day.

Green began the key run with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 12th and made a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-5 13th. Then, after Stark bogeyed the par-4 16th two groups ahead, Green ran in a 25-footer for eagle from the fringe on 15 to open a four-stroke lead, and made it 5 under in five holes with a birdie on 16.

“When I chipped in on 12 I kind of felt like I really snagged one there,” Green said. “I really like the 13th hole and also played the 15th really well. When I made eagle on 15 that kind of sealed the deal. I did see Maja got it to 9 under so I know what I needed to do. Usually, I make it really tricky on myself and only win by a shot.”

Stark finished with a 68, rebounding from the bogey on 16 to birdie the final two holes. The 24-year-old Swede also finished second last week outside Houston in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year.

LIV — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club in Australia by one stoke.

The 41-year-old Steele shot a final-round 68 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 to earn his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen, and former previous Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

“Yeah, I was telling myself that I knew there was going to be hard moments today regardless of the result and that I just needed to get back in there and start playing with freedom again,” Steele said moments after winning.

“And, and I was able to hit some good shots after that and write the show.”

South Africa’s Oosthuizen shot 65 to finish second at 17-under 199, and had drawn within one stroke of Steele late in Sunday’s final round, only for the American to make some clutch pars in the final holes to clinch victory.

Oosthuizen’s compatriot Schwartzel and Rahm were among a group of five players at 16-under 200, with Joaquin Niemann (66), Andy Ogletree (65) and Dean Burgmester (67) in a tie for third.

Former world No.1 Rahm had an eagle and six birdies in his 8-under 64 but had left too much ground to catch up on Steele on the final day to capture his first title since joining the LlV tour in December.

Last year’s winner Talor Gooch shot 70 and finshed in a tie for 26th at 10-under.

Champions — Stephen Ames celebrated his 60th birthday with a successful title defense in the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, closing with a 5-under 67 on Sunday for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.

A stroke behind Paul Broadhurst after matching the tournament record Saturday with a 64, Ames had two eagles in the final round. He won by four strokes, finishing at 14-under 202 at TPC Sugarloaf for his record third victory in the event.

Broadhurst, the 58-year-old Englishman coming off a victory last week in the Invited Celebrity Classic, closed with a 72 to tie for second with Doug Barron (69). K.J. Choi (70) and Steven Alker (71) were 9 under.
