The Dominican Republic received over 7 million tourists throughout its summer season, predominantly from the United States, Canada, and Spain

SANTO DOMINGO – As the Caribbean’s summer season draws to a close, the Dominican Republic celebrates another highly successful year as a top tourist destination. It has continued to exceed its annual tourism forecasts, welcoming 7 million visitors in the first three quarters of the year – a 25% increase over 2022.

Just over 782,000 tourists visited the country in August, making it the best one in Dominican history. The Caribbean nation is now South America’s second-largest tourist destination, setting a clear benchmark for its neighbors.

Based on past trends and experiences, the Dominican Ministry of Tourism expects to welcome 10 million visitors by the end of the year. This would make 2023 the first time in its history that it has hit double-digits, nearly reaching a one-to-one ratio of tourists to citizens.

ForwardKeys , a leading tourism trend analysis firm, supports this bright outlook as well. Its most recent airline ticketing trends suggest Q4 will see significant growth throughout the Caribbean when compared to 2019, the last pre-pandemic year. The Dominican Republic is predicted to show the highest growth, at 54%. In fact, the Dominican Republic has shown the most post-pandemic tourism growth of any nation in the Americas, with 2023 showing strong signs of achieving a 10% increase over 2019.

The firm’s results also confirm that the United States, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom are responsible for a combined total of 81% of tourism to the Dominican Republic in 2023 thus far. Hotel occupancy data confirms this, with visitors staying an average of eight days.

While air travel remains the method of choice for reaching the island nation, the cruise segment made a strong showing in the first few months of the year and has remained a key element of the Dominican Republic’s current numbers. Over 1.5 million people YTD have traveled through the country’s ports, such as Puerto Plata and La Romana. Starting in December, the new destination of Pedernales will be open as well.

A safe, hospitable destination

“The summer is always an interesting benchmark for our country,” shared Dominican Tourism Minister David Collado . “Based on our current numbers, we’re heading for a new milestone. Summer is always a popular travel season with many attractive options – such as many European countries. But despite the competition, the Dominican Republic has remained a preferred destination for travelers from both Europe and North America. Clearly, in addition to our warm climate, our security and great hospitality make us an attractive tourist destination.”

The country’s dynamic and growing tourism sector has retaken its place as a key pillar of the Dominican economy in the post-pandemic world, thanks largely to the foreign currency it brings in and the jobs it creates. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the Dominican tourism sector will generate 17.5% of national employment and represent 15.3% of its economy by the end of 2023. And, as the sector’s supply chain is almost entirely (90%) made up of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), its success and power are reflected in the country’s local businesses as well.

Dominican Republic reaches record-breaking 10 million visitors in 2023

PUNTA CANA — The Dominican Republic reached a significant milestone over the holidays: its 10 millionth visitor of the year.

The unprecedented milestone was reached on Dec. 26, 2023, with tourist Ariana Guilak receiving a special welcome by Minister of Tourism David Collado at the Punta Cana International Airport. Guilak arrived on a flight from the United States, which is the Dominican Republic’s number one market.

According to Minister Collado, the country welcomed 7,863,542 tourists by air and 2,168,209 cruise passengers by sea in 2023.

“Reaching 10 million tourists between air and cruise ships is a fact that should fill the entire country with pride, regardless of political flags, since each of these visitors are friends of the country who contribute to development, employment to the countryside, to construction and the entire productive apparatus of the country continuing to grow,” said Minister Collado.

Tourist Ariana Guilak was honoured at a special ceremony at Punta Cana airport

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) also presented figures of tourism’s economic impact this year, which included more than 620,000 direct jobs and an estimated generation of foreign exchange of more than 11 billion dollars. Figures also showed that the Dominican Republic is the country that has grown the most in tourist arrivals in the Caribbean region from 2019 to date, going from 6.4 million visitors to more than 10 million, and that it’s been recognized by various international organizations as the number one country in terms of post-COVID tourism recovery.

To mark the 10 million milestone, activities were also carried out at Las Américas International airport in Santo Domingo, the Cibao International airport in Santiago, as well as at Amber Cove and Taino Bay cruise ports in Puerto Plata.

Another Month of Strong Tourism Growth for Dominican Republic 

The Dominican Republic’s record-breaking tourism numbers are showing no signs of slowing down, according to newly-released data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism. 

The Dominican Republic reported 531.017 stavover arrivals in October, the most ever for the country in the month of October. 

That represented an 8 percent jump over the same month in 2022, tourism officials said. 

The Dominican Republic also saw strong cruise growth, with 88,187 cruise passengers in the country — meaning a total of just under 1.7 million cruise arrivals so far this year. 

That combined total is bringing the Dominican Republic closer to a major milestone: an ambitious goal for a combined 10 million arrivals in 2023, across stayover and cruise. 

So far this year, the Dominican Republic has seen a total of 8.245 million combined stayover and cruise arrivals.

The Dominican Republic Has Seen Record-Setting Tourism Numbers. Here's Why

A risky COVID-19 strategy paid off, boosting the island's economy

Have you noticed that everyone is taking a trip to the Dominican Republic lately? The island nation has always been a popular vacation destination. Still, visitor numbers boomed to all-time highs while other Caribbean countries struggled to stay afloat during the pandemic. By February 2021, around seven months after borders reopened, flight bookings to the Dominican Republic surpassed 2019 levels and have only continued to grow, according to insights from the Mastercard Economics Institute 2022 Travel Trend Report .

The boom in bookings is due, in large part, to a risky approach toward luring travelers. Instead of enforcing masking, vaccination, and testing requirements for visitors, officials focused on vaccinations and mask compliance among service industry workers. “We knew it was a risk, and we wanted to take it,” Jacqueline Mora, deputy minister of tourism, told the New York Times in January. 

The risk paid off—big time. Bookings have stayed far above 2019 levels and have seen more than 100 percent increases in April, May, and June of 2021 and in April 2022. In terms of revenue, that totals out to more than $5.7 billion in 2021 while maintaining a relatively low rate of COVID 19-related deaths. Compare that with Canada, a historically popular vacation destination for U.S. travelers. The country took a more tempered approach to reopen its borders, waiting until summer 2021 to welcome vaccinated tourists. Flight bookings immediately started to increase, but by April 2022, numbers were still lagging 17 percent below comparable 2019 levels despite Canada being the second most popular destination for North American travelers.

Regardless of how effective safety measures like showing proof of vaccination may or may not be when it comes to curbing infection rates, many Americans are tired of pandemic-era restrictions—especially when they’re on vacation, so it comes as no surprise that the Dominican Republic has become such a hot destination for travelers from the U.S.

After two years of a pandemic, people feel desperate for a vacation. So desperate that even rampant inflation won’t stop them. Or at least not entirely. While a WalletHub survey revealed that inflation had impacted travel for 58 percent of Americans, 41 percent more people would be willing to go further into debt to take a vacation in 2022 than last year. “After two-plus years of pandemic living, many Americans are clinging to the idea of making up for lost time, and if some interest charges and possibly a late fee are part of the price of making a long-awaited getaway happen, so be it,” said Delaney Simchuk, an analyst for WalletHub.

This summer is shaping up to be one of blow-out vacations, setting up destinations with minimal COVID-19 restrictions to rake in millions of dollars.

Dominican Republic sees 3.2 million visitors in 1st quarter

Punta Cana, DR.- Tourism Minister David Collado announced on Tuesday that the Dominican Republic continues to smash visitor arrival records. In the first three months of the year alone, the country welcomed a staggering 3.2 million visitors.

That impressive number includes 1.1 million visitors in March, a 16% increase compared to the same month last year. Collado also revealed a breakdown of arrivals, with 836,502 tourists arriving by air and 267,768 by sea.

“We continue to reach spectacular figures: 1,104,270 visitors last month, which gives us the magic number of 3,226,484 in the first three months of this year, something never seen before in the history of Dominican tourism,” Minister Collado said when presenting the sector’s performance during an activity in Punta Cana, where the main players in the industry participated.

The official said that the arrival of 836,502 tourists by air last month is only comparable to the Christmas season.

He expressed that this figure reflects a growth of 13% compared to March of last year, 35% compared to 2022 and 24% compared to 2019.

Collado pointed out that this historic growth is also reflected in the cruise ship area, with the arrival of 267,768 visitors by sea in March alone, rising to 1,104,270 cruise passengers in the January-March 2024 period.

He explained that the countries that contributed the most tourists in March and the first quarter of this year were the United States with 49%, Canada with 23%, Colombia and Argentina with 3%.

The airports that received the most tourists were Punta Cana with 61%, Las Américas 21%, Cibao 10%, Puerto Plata 7% and La Romana with 1%.

Probably because of the no smoking laws in Mexico. I was going to go to Mexico but when I found out you can’t smoke on the beach or at the resorts, I booked for Punta Cana instead.

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S.? See the paths for the 2044 and 2045 events

Eclipse-watchers waited more than six years since the last time a total solar eclipse charted its way across the United States,  in 2017 . After the  April 8 event , prepare to wait a lot longer — the next chance won't be coming around any time soon.

Viewers in what's called " the path of totality " saw the moon completely block the sun  — an opportunity those in North America won't have again for 20-plus years. The next total solar eclipses in North America are not anticipated until 2044 and 2045.

"A total solar eclipse is one of the most spectacular things anyone can see in their lifetime," Virginia Tech astrophysicist Nahum Arav told CBS News. The eclipse "looks like a black hole in the sky," said Arav, who watched the paths of totality of eclipses in 1991 and 2017.

Monday's eclipse started around 11:07 a.m. PDT on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, and then moved into Texas . The eclipse's visibility tracked  through 15 states  — Oklahoma, Illinois , Ohio,  Pennsylvania , New York , Vermont ,  New Hampshire  and Maine , among them — before heading northward into Canada and then exiting North America.

Even with spotty weather in some states, millions of people from coast to coast saw a partial solar eclipse, in which the moon partially covers the sun. However, only those within the path of totality experienced the darkness of the total solar eclipse. 

When is the next total solar eclipse in the U.S. after the 2024 eclipse?

Solar eclipses happen about twice a year, said Arav. "Eclipses happen all over the Earth evenly," he told CBS News — but noted the timings when they occur are not regular. That means  eclipses can occur within just a few years, or every few decades, in North America.

Before the eclipse in 2017, the last total solar eclipse to cross North America was in 1979 . That was the first eclipse whose path of totality crossed the entire continent in 99 years. 

Even though eclipses may seem to occur randomly, scientists can pinpoint exactly when and where they will happen.

"There is no ambiguity, as we know exactly where it will land," said Arav. 

There will be eight total solar eclipses visible from North America in the 21st century, Arav said, with one occurring about every 12 years, on average.   

The next total solar eclipse to cross North America is predicted to occur on Aug. 23, 2044 , NASA said. However, the path of totality from this eclipse will only touch three states, according to  The Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to public interest in space.  

This next eclipse will mainly be observed in Canada, Arav said. 

Path of totality for the 2044 total solar eclipse

The 2044 eclipse will start in Greenland on Aug. 23, 2044, and will continue its path through Canada. 

The 2044 total solar eclipse will be short, mostly appearing in Canada. It will be visible from three states in the U.S.: Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.  

The path of totality will cross Williston and Dickinson, North Dakota, and Great Falls, Montana.

The next solar eclipse that crosses a significant portion of the continental U.S. will be in 2045, said Arav. That year, a solar eclipse will darken skies in parts of the U.S., Haiti, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil. 

In North America, the 2045 total eclipse will be visible in many states as it moves from coast to coast. The eclipse will start in California and move east to end in Florida, similar to 2017, Arav said. 

There will be numerous U.S. cities where eclipse watchers can view the total eclipse, including Reno, Nevada; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Orlando, Florida.

Future solar eclipses in North America after 2045

Scientists have predicted eight total solar eclipses will appear in North America in the 21st century.

"Natural phenomena are like a Swiss clock," Arav said. "We know exactly when and where they will appear."

After the 2044 and 2045 total solar eclipses, the next total eclipses in North America will occur in 2078 and 2099.
