international family travel packages

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount on the price of their trip.

Travel with other families

Traveling the Intrepid way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

international family travel packages

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Family favorites

The scaly face of an Iguana looking at the camera as it lies on a tree

Come for the biodiverse landscapes of Costa Rica and stay for the fascinating wildlife lurking in the country’s tropical wilderness. Spot three-toed sloths as they munch on their leafy food, listen out for the call of howler monkeys as they swing from tree to tree, and catch sight of a slow-moving iguana as it moves along the jungle floor – all within the extraordinary Manuel Antonio National Park.

Mother and tiger cub rest in Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Rajasthan, India

With palaces, forts, festivals and wildlife encounters to take the breath away, Rajasthan in India is a must-see for all families. We stay in century-old heritage accommodation, living life like a Maharaja and Maharani. Trace the tracks of Bengal tigers in the jungle, wander through lush palace gardens, clock the famous Taj Mahal and ride the rails through the sun-kissed countryside.

Family tour through the streets of Essaouira

Essaouira, Morocco

An artists’ town through and through, Essaouira is full of surprises. First, there’s the beautiful blue-specked townscape, with its whitewashed seaside houses you could stare at for an age. Dig a little deeper and find galleries, boutiques, wood workshops and a colorful heritage of Portuguese, British, French and Jewish influences.

Colorful tradtional wear of the Maasai tribe in the Loita hills

Loita Hills, Kenya

Nestled in the Great Rift Valley, Loita Hills is a special place. It’s the town the Maasai call home, and it’s a privilege to spend time with such a proud and joyous people. Join in the famous Maasai jumping dance and remember to get a snap of the family leaping for the sky.

A brightly colored Citadel in Hue, Vietnam

Hue, Vietnam

Deep dive into Hue - a spectacular city with a royal past - on your family adventure through Vietnam. Whether you’re excited to travel the atmospheric streets on a cyclo tour, visit ancient pagodas built for religious figures, marvel at impressive citadels fit for royalty or join members of the community for a traditional paper flower-making class at a local non-government organization, there’s a little something for everyone in this cultural country.

A young girl holding up a piece of pizza in Italy with her mouth open

If there’s a destination fit for family travel, it’s Italy – think pizza and gelato making in Sorrento, scialatielli tasting (fresh pasta) in Minori, and history lessons about Mt Vesuvius while looking at the volcano itself. Packed with food and local artisan experiences, you and your kids will get a real taste of Italy while also getting the chance to appreciate the country’s breathtaking coastal scenery and learn about its captivating past.

Where we stay

We take a lot of care in choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family-friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature en suite bathrooms and air conditioning as standard. We also prefer hotels that provide triple or quad rooms and always try to offer adjoining rooms for parents and kids when they are available.

Top International Family Vacations in North America

1. canadian rockies.

Aerial view of Banff National Park

Banff National Park is one of the best places to visit when it comes to exploring the Canadian Rockies.

Established in 1885, it is Canada’s oldest national park and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as being named one of the most beautiful places on Earth !

Visitors to Banff can enjoy stunning views of nature like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake and Natural Bridge, plus take in breathtaking sights such as Takakkaw Falls. Wildlife enthusiasts will also be in luck when they visit Banff. Moose, deer and even bears—all might be spotted while you explore the area.

There are plenty of opportunities to experience some truly awe-inspiring natural scenery that’s unique only to Banff National Park! A family vacation here will guarantee you memories that’ll last a lifetime!

🤩 I love this private tour of Banff because it covers all the best sightseeing spots!

2. Riviera Maya, Mexico

David and Little Man hanging out on the beach in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya Mexico.

Riviera Maya, Mexico is an enchanting place for a family vacation. It’s home to stunning white sand beaches in Cancun and ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza and Coba near Tulum.

Plus, there’s a variety of unique islands like Isla Mujeres , Cozumel , and Isla Contoy . We’ve spent time on all three and love how different a vibe each one has!

If you’re looking for something unique, there are lots of other activities to do with your family too! If you’re really adventurous, try swimming with whale sharks (older kids only)! And, you can explore cenotes near Playa del Carmen – natural sinkholes that originate from underground rivers. A refreshing swim in crystal-clear water is always a great way to cool off after a day of exploring the ruins.

I’ve lived in Riviera Maya for almost a year and my family absolutely loved all these activities. It makes for the perfect family getaway!

Where to Stay in Riviera Maya

Hotel Xcaret Mexico is the ideal choice for families who want to ensure that everyone in the family has an enjoyable and relaxing vacation.

The hotel boasts spacious rooms and suites, two large pools with lounge chairs and umbrellas, a buffet restaurant offering international cuisine, multiple bars throughout the grounds, as well as an on-site spa.

3. Hawaii, USA

View from our hotel overlooking Waikiki at sunet.

My family has been lucky enough to visit both Oahu and Maui, and I can honestly say that Hawaii is an amazing destination for families looking to have some fun and make lasting memories.

From snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to stargazing at the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, there are plenty of activities that will keep kids entertained. On Maui, you can go on a whale-watching expedition or spend the day hiking through Haleakalā National Park. If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, drive along the Road to Hana and marvel at the lush jungles and majestic waterfalls.

👉 Get Dramamine for everyone if you drive the Road To Hana! There’s even a chewable version available for kids.

Oahu offers its own set of family-friendly activities too! One of our favorite spots is Waikiki Beach. From building sandcastles to playing beach volleyball with locals, it’s definitely a must-visit spot when visiting Hawaii. Overall, Hawaii is a top pick for parents planning a family vacation from around the world. With loads of outdoor activities suitable for all ages plus stunning natural beauty everywhere you look. It truly is paradise!

The resort offers an array of activities to keep everyone entertained. Kids can enjoy the water park with slides and splash pads or take part in fun activities like hula lessons or lei-making classes.

🤩 I love this tour of Oahu because you get to see all the top photo spots AND snorkel with sea turtles!

4. Mexico City, Mexico

Museo Soumaya Mexico City Mexico

Mexico City, Mexico is an amazing destination for families . With endless kid-friendly activities, parents planning a family vacation have plenty of options to keep their little ones engaged and entertained.

I spent a month there with my family and can confirm that it is absolutely worth the trip. From the incredible museums to lush parks, Mexico City offers something for everyone.

There’s the amazing National Museum of Anthropology, the world-renowned Museo Soumaya for budding historians, and Chapultepec Park – one of the oldest parks in North America. It’s perfect for exploring the outdoors with little ones.

Plus, for foodies, there are countless restaurants serving traditional Mexican cuisine as well as more modern takes on classic dishes; you won’t be disappointed! Despite doing all this and exploring some really unique restaurants in CDMX, we felt like we barely scratched the surface when it came to all the potential activities during our stay in Mexico City. One visit will have you wanting to return!

Where to Stay in Mexico City

The Hyatt Regency Mexico City is ideally located for families. Just steps from Chapultepec Park, which is bigger than Central Park in New York City, this hotel makes it easy to visit the world-class museums and expansive (FREE) zoo in the park.

Plus, the Hyatt’s amenities are great for families as well. It has a lovely outdoor pool, three on-site restaurants, and two bars.

Although you may not even need to visit the restaurants since the hotel is located in Polanco, which offers a variety of tasty restaurants. We loved eating at Cafebrería El Péndulo, a restaurant bookstore!

🤩 I love this hot air balloon ride over the Teotihuacan ruins because it’s truly a memorable family experience!

5. New York City, USA

Times Square in New York City at night.

New York City is a great international vacation destination for families. There’s something for everyone in the city that never sleeps.

Where to Stay

Located in the heart of Manhattan, the Margaritaville Resort Times Square offers guests a range of attractions to explore, including a heated outdoor swimming pool and direct access to some of the city’s most iconic attractions.

With spacious rooms, a convenient location, and amenities such as free Wi-Fi and on-site restaurants, it’s no surprise that this resort is so popular among vacationing families.

Plus, given its proximity to Times Square and the Broadway Theater District, there are plenty of exciting opportunities for parents and kids alike!

🤩 I love this Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island tour because you get to experience a unique piece of American History!

6. Chicago, USA

My family on the Lincoln Park Zoo bridge overlooking the Chicago skyline

Chicago is an amazing city for families and kids ! As a parent who lived in the city for over 16 years, including the first seven years of Little Man’s life, I have seen firsthand how great it can be for family vacations. First and foremost, Chicago has an incredible amount of free public attractions that are kid friendly. For example, the Lincoln Park Zoo located on the lakefront is entirely free and is filled with fun activities for children of all ages.

There are also multiple playgrounds located along the lakefront that are perfect for running around and having fun. Our favorite is at Maggie Daley Park. The food in Chicago caters to kids as well. There are plenty of restaurants that serve family-friendly meals like burgers and fries, deep-dish pizza, ice cream sundaes, etc. And there’s no shortage of Chicago-style hot dogs! If you want to visit over a holiday, like St. Patrick’s Day or Christmas, there are always extra kid-friendly activities and events going on, too! In addition to its convenient location and outdoor pool, Viceroy Hotel Chicago also offers a variety of amenities such as free in-room WiFi, a gym, and a rooftop terrace.

🤩 I love this Chicago Architecture River Cruise because it also shows you the skyline from Lake Michigan!

7. San Francisco, USA

San Fransisco Bay view from the top of a hill.

With its iconic cable cars and vibrant cultural atmosphere, there are plenty of unique and fun activities for the whole family to enjoy in San Francisco! One thing you have to do when visiting San Francisco with kids is ride the famous cable car. It’s not just an iconic symbol of the city, it’s also a great way to get around! Best International Family Vacations in Central America & the Caribbean

8. costa rica.

Small bridge over a stream in Monteverde Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an amazing international vacation for families, and I can speak to that from personal experience. My family spent three months exploring the country, and we had a blast.

One of our favorite activities was going on waterfall hikes and hanging bridge tours in Monteverde. The lush jungle setting was beautiful, the wildlife was plentiful, and the water cascading down the rocks was quite a sight!

We also hiked in Manuel Antonio National Park where we encountered some of the local wildlife, such as sloths and iguanas. The entire Pacific coast is great for an international vacation with kids! Another highlight of our trip was exploring Uvita’s beaches. We found some spectacular spots with unspoiled views of the Pacific Coastline, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

Last but not least, we also visited San Jose’s Gold Museum located near the Central Market where we learned about Costa Rica’s rich history and culture. So don’t skip out on San Jose for the jungles when you visit Costa Rica with your family!

Located in the heart of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Hotel Belmar is an eco-friendly hotel that offers a unique and unforgettable experience for guests of all ages.

With its stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lush gardens, and a variety of activities to choose from, Hotel Belmar is sure to make your stay in Monteverde an enjoyable one.

The hotel also offers a variety of amenities such as free Wi-Fi, an outdoor pool, and a restaurant serving up delicious local cuisine. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, Hotel Belmar has something for everyone.

🤩 I love this private Monteverde tour because it combines culture, wildlife, and beautiful scenery!

9. Guatemala

Travel blogging is one of the best digital nomad jobs for beginners, in my opinion!

Visiting Guatemala with your children can be a wonderful experience. From the awe-inspiring beauty of the ancient Mayan civilization to the bustling city life in modern-day Antigua, there is something for everyone to enjoy. When my family and I visited Tikal , we were enthralled by the temples, plazas, and pyramids. We even had a chance to see some of the local wildlife; from howler monkeys to sleeping bats, you never know what you’ll find when exploring these ruins.

Antigua is another great destination for families looking for an international vacation. The city is bustling with culture and provides plenty of activities for all ages – from shopping and sightseeing to horseback riding and cycling.

We spent six weeks in Antigua and enjoyed every minute of it! Little Man especially liked visiting all the local handmade candy shops and the easy climb to Cerro de la Cruce above the city. Even Antigua’s McDonalds is worth visiting! Guatemala has so much to offer that there’s something new and exciting around every corner! From beautiful landscapes to vibrant cities, It’s is an ideal place for an international family vacation that kiddos will always remember!

If you’re looking for the best family hotel in Antigua Guatemala, look no further than Porta Hotel Antigua . It’s been consistently ranked as one of the top family hotels in the area.

It features beautiful colonial architecture, lush gardens, and a large pool built for kids. Plus, it offers full-service amenities that cater to families.

The hotel offers easy access to all the attractions nearby, including charming parks, local markets, and some great restaurants and cafes that offer a variety of international cuisine.

🤩 I love this cultural tour of Antigua because you see Mayan weavers, a chocolate workshop, a macadamia farm, & a coffee plantation !

10. El Salvador

My family touring a coffee farm

Visiting El Salvador with kids can be an exciting and educational experience. The country has a lot to offer, from the picturesque Flower Route to the flavorful Juayua Food Festival near Santa Ana, and plenty of adventures in between.

One of our favorite activities in El Salvador was exploring Volcantenango in San Salvador. It’s a Game of Thrones-themed activity park for families with an amazing view of the city and some incredible flora and fauna.

Plus, there’s a fun rainbow slide down the street that’s perfect for older kids! It’s tall and fast, so it’s better suited for kiddos 10-12+

And don’t forget about El Tunco beaches. They have some of the best waves for surfing in the region and plenty of places to explore – from tidepools to turtle nesting grounds. I spent a month in El Salvador with my family, so I can personally vouch for all that I mentioned above! It was an unforgettable trip, filled with amazing new experiences.

Located between Santa Ana and the towns on the Flower Route, San Antonio Boutique Hotel is ideally situated to be a great base for stays in western El Salvador.

The hotel provides rooms with either a balcony or a terrace as well as free WiFi and a flat-screen TV. Families will enjoy the garden views, the restaurant with daily breakfast, and the children’s playground that’s available for all guests to use.

If you want to use San Salvador for your base in El Salvador, then the Sheraton Presidente San Salvador is the place to stay! It has a big swimming pool with a waterfall and impressive mountain views!

🤩 I love this San Salvador day trip because it’s the most fun and comprehensive San Salvador itinerary!

11. Turks & Caicos

This style takes traditional Italian pizza ingredients like pepperoni and fresh basil but adds an extra crunchy base topped with parmesan cheese. Yum! No trip to Italy would be complete without visiting the Trivaldi Fountain in Florence. This spectacular marble fountain was built by Battista di Tommaso Giunti over 400 years ago and stands as one of Florence’s most iconic attractions.

Kids will love admiring the intricate carvings on each statue around the fountain before heading off to explore other sites like the Uffizi Gallery or Boboli Gardens.

Located in the heart of Rome, just steps away from the iconic Pantheon as well as Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, Terrace Pantheon Relais offers plenty of atmosphere and amenities to make your stay enjoyable.

The hotel features modern comforts like air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs in each room. Families will appreciate the gourmet food served at the restaurant and bar, as well as the rooftop terrace with views of Rome’s skyline.

From a roundtrip airport shuttle to babysitting services, Terrace Pantheon Relais has everything you need to ensure your family has a comfortable stay. Plus, parents can rest easy knowing that the area is safe and quiet at night.

🤩 I love Roman Gladiator School in Rome because kids can learn history by reliving it!

Parthenon in Athens Greece

Greece is a great place to plan an international vacation with kids, offering plenty of cool and unique activities. The Parthenon in Athens is a must-see destination for its rich historical significance and breathtaking views of the city.

Island hopping around the hundreds of Greek islands is also a great way to explore the country’s beautiful coastlines, landscapes, and beaches. From Santorini to Corfu there are enough breathtaking islands to make them a trip of their own! If you’re feeling daring, why not try your hand at some of the more extreme water sports like windsurfing, kitesurfing, or wakeboarding? These are better for older kids, and are a ton of fun!

And let’s not forget Delphi, the famous ancient city located in the mountains at the end of a winding road offering stunning views over olive groves and valleys.

It’s a great place to explore the ruins of its temples and ancient monuments, as well as enjoy some delicious local food. Plus, it’s one of the best places in Greece to go hiking!

LUX&EASY Athens Downtown Residences is just 350 meters away from the Metro station, making it easy to explore all that Athens has to offer. Plus, it offers a 24-hour fitness center and spa services.

The specially-designed rooms at LUX&EASY Athens Downtown Apartments provide plenty of space for families, with separate living room and bedroom areas that can accommodate up to four people.

Kids will love the iPads provided in each room, which come pre-loaded with games and entertainment options. There’s also an outdoor pool where they can take a dip or just lounge around on a sunny day.

🤩 I love this mythological tour of Athens because it helps kiddos relive the Percy Jackson books!

35. Türkiye

Hagia Sofia Mosque in Istanbul, Turkiye

Turkiye (formerly called Turkey) is a vibrant and exciting destination for parents planning an international family vacation. With plenty of cultural attractions, modern amenities, and activities for all ages, it has something to offer everyone. Start with the iconic Hagia Sophia Mosque, a majestic structure that stands as a testament to Turkiye’s long-standing religious traditions. Inside, marvel at the stunning mosaics and frescoes from centuries ago that still remain in pristine condition.

Just outside the mosque lies the Topkapi Palace which contains the relics of Muhammad including his footprint and staff. The Grand Bazaar is nearby, too!

Be sure to take in the stunning views of Istanbul by taking a Sophorus Cruise along the Bosphorus Strait. Witness some of Europe’s most beautiful buildings such as Dolmabahce Palace while sailing past them aboard a cruise ship . For modern thrills, head down to Land of Legends Theme Park in Antalya where you can enjoy water slides, roller coasters, and performances from acrobats and clowns. It’s perfect for families with children of all ages!

With its great location and top-notch amenities, Ramada Istanbul Grand Bazaar is truly one of the best hotels for families vacationing in Istanbul!

With its central location, guests can easily explore the renowned Grand Bazaar and other nearby attractions. The hotel also has several connecting rooms to accommodate families, as well as an on-site café where guests can grab a quick bite.

All rooms come with satellite TV and tea/coffee set-up, while some even have balconies with views of the city. Guests will also appreciate the free Wi-Fi throughout the property and 24-hour front desk service.

🤩 I love this sunset river tour of Istanbul because you can see the sights in style!

Bonus International Family Vacation: Antarctica

Penguins in Antarctica

You can’t exactly vacation ON Antarctica as you can in other spots on this list. However, you can book a cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina to the 7th Continent . On the right cruise, you can spend several days exploring Antarctica on day trips.

This option isn’t for the faint-hearted family, though. It’s cold in Antarctica. And crossing the Drake Passage can be rough! But the views and wildlife experiences are beyond anything you’ve ever seen before if you do it.

We visited Antarctica in December 2023 and it was truly one of the coolest things we’ve ever done. We even got to see Iceberg A23a , the largest iceberg on earth!

And then there’s the price tag. The absolute lowest Antarctic cruise prices I’ve seen hover around $5,000 USD per person, and they can go up to $30,000+ per person, for a one-week cruise. Kids usually aren’t discounted.

While this isn’t a cruise you’d likely repeat, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the effort. It absolutely is! Because of the weather and cost, I don’t recommend you plan this trip until your kids are at least 11 or 12 years old. Make it count!

🤩 I love this Tierra del Fuego tour from Ushuaia because it’s one of the prettiest National Parks on Earth!

10 Best International Family Vacations for 2020

See recent posts by Judy Koutsky

Want to venture somewhere new—perhaps outside of the U.S.—in 2020? We know kids like active adventures like ziplining and kayaking (think Belize), but we also know parents want them to try new foods (like wasabi-infused specialties in Japan). Throw in some great tour leaders (we’re looking at you, Adventures by Disney) and some under-the-radar destinations (like Guyana) and you have tons of vacation options across the globe. These are the best international family vacations for 2020.

(Looking for some great vacation ideas closer to home? Check out the 10 Best U.S. Family Vacations for 2020 .)

Belize’s Lodge at Chaa Creek  is a 400-acre eco lodge specializing in adventure, with dozens of different activities offered each day. Be sure to go on a bird watching tour—this area has some of the best bird watching in the country—or take a tubing excursion deep into the jungle, where you can see plenty of beautiful toucans, the national bird of Belize . Zipline among the trees and see a view of the jungle from above. Naturalist guides will take guests horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking through the dense jungle while travelers take in the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Be sure to take a canoe trip down the Macal River to see birds, howler monkeys and other wildlife.

Next, head to the second largest barrier reef system in the world. Victoria House Resort & Spa , located on Ambergris Caye, features spacious villas, a gourmet restaurant with freshly-caught seafood, two beachfront pools and a dive shop where charter boats can be arranged for exhilarating adventures such as scuba diving in the world-renowned Great Blue Hole or snorkeling in Shark Ray Alley. Then head to Naia Resort and Spa  in Placencia, the southern part of Belize, where the family can go on leisure bike rides or spend the day on kayaks or SUP.

Recommended Belize Hotel: The Lodge at Chaa Creek

2. Curtain Bluff Resort in Antigua

Families looking for all-inclusive fun on the island of Antigua should look no further than Curtain Bluff Resort . Located on 20 acres of landscaped land nestled between two sandy beaches, the resort features one of the highest repeat guest ratios in the Caribbean. For families looking to have many options—without having to check the price constantly—this all-inclusive resort is just the ticket. From snorkeling trips to Cades Reef to water-skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing, kids will have plenty to keep them busy. Plus, the outdoor kids’ club—with feeding and playing with turtles, colorful paint projects, and coconut arts and crafts—will have the kids begging to go back each day.

3. Adventures by Disney Iceland

Adventures by Disney  has been leading tours since 2005, and has more than 50 itineraries on six continents, with Iceland being one of their newest (and, rapidly, most popular) tours. The  eight-day Iceland tour includes Reykjavik, Vik, Akureyri, Húsavík, and Lake Mývatn. While those names might not be overly familiar, the attractions in those towns are—namely hiking on a glacier, going to the Blue Lagoon, and visiting geysers and waterfalls. In Grindavík, about an hour by car from Reykjavik, the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon—as well as the accompanying lava mud masks—are the perfect antidote for jet lag on the first day.

The second day is action-packed, covering the Golden Circle—one of the most popular routes that takes visitors from geysers to craters. Plus, there’s plenty to keep everyone active, including riding Icelandic horses; hiking down into Kerio Crater, a volcanic crater that was formed more than 6,500 years ago; and exploring the bubbling hot springs and geysers at Strokkur Geyser.

Other highlights include hiking on the Skaftafell glacier, going behind the waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss (which seems otherworldly), and whale watching (and being mere feet away from them) in Iceland’s longest fjord. There’s also whitewater rafting in Skagafjorour in the north (a part of Iceland that rarely gets explored), as well as visits to the lava labyrinths in Dimmuborgir.

4. UnCruise Adventures to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal

For families who want a truly unique adventure, consider a visit to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal with  UnCruise Adventures . Uncruise is so named because it’s unlike any other cruise line—it’s all about active adventure and interaction in the destination. Each day, familes will have the option to hike, snorkel, kayak, SUP and do skiff tours to see monkeys, sloths, iguanas, hummingbirds, toucans, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, white-faced capuchins and whales.

Families also get to visit San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, before sailing to Curu National Wildlife Refuge, where a hike to Finca de Monos trail will let kids get up close to monkeys and sloths. Next up is the Osa Conservation Area, home to the country’s largest national park, Corcovado. Here, there’s a good chance to see tree frogs, caimans, anteaters, scarlet macaws, coatis, and 16 different species of hummingbird. In Panama, sail through the islands of Coiba National Park, making a stop at the postcard-perfect Granito de Oro islet for snorkeling, kayaking and relaxing in the sand. Then transfer from ocean to ocean via the world-famous Panama Canal.

5. Australia’s Outback

The Outback of Australia, located in the Northern Territory, is famous for its Red Center desert landscape. Home to the iconic sandstone monolith Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock), the red-rock domes of Kata Tjuta and the sculpted cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park, this area offers plenty of adventure activities for families—including camel safaris into the desert and canyon hikes where kangaroos can be spotted.

For your home base, Sails in the Desert Hotel is ideal in terms of location and activities it offers. Kids can learn about the aboriginal people by taking part in the resort’s cooking class, where they’ll be taught about the native foods and seasonings—and how certain plants, fruits and grains are used in traditional cooking methods.

In Kings Canyon, there are amazing hikes including the Kings Canyon rim walk. Kings Canyon Resort  is a true family resort and a good place to stay. In Alice Springs, be sure to visit the Kangaroo Sanctuary. You’ll get a chance to get up close to these beautiful creatures and learn all about their habitat. The 188-acre wildlife sanctuary was opened in 2011 for rescued baby and adult kangaroos. It’s a great way to end your bucket-list family trip .

Recommended Australian Outback Resort: Sails in the Desert Hotel

For families interested in eco-tourism and adventure activities, Guyana is a great place to visit. It was recently named one of the top ecotourism destinations in the world by travel industry insiders, which isn’t surprising for those familiar with this under-the-radar country. Reachable via non-stop flights from New York, Miami and other U.S. hubs, this small nation is located in the northern part of South America, bordering Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname. Guyana is the only country in South America whose official language is English.

Direct flights and the absence of a language barrier aside, what really attracts people to this country are its truly unique nature and wildlife offerings. The country is often referred to by travelers as the “Land of the Giants” since people come here to see the giant river otters, giant South American turtles, giant anteaters, jaguars (considered the largest in South America), the Harpy eagle (the largest eagle on this continent and one of the world’s most powerful birds of prey), and the giant Victoria Amazonica water lily (Guyana’s national flower and the world’s largest lily). Here, the hyperbole lives up to the hype.

Be sure to visit the Rupununi region—where savannah, mountains and rainforests meet. This area is home to many endangered and protected species. We also recommend a stay at Karanambu ranch, where you’ll get to see the giant otter rehab project, which helps rehabilitate injured and orphaned otters and re-introduce them to the wild. Spend some time with the otters during the day before partaking in the caiman project once night falls. The giant black caiman is the one of largest freshwater crocodiles on the planet, and the Caiman House has been conducting research on these amazing creatures for more than 10 years. They take guests out in the dry season to catch the caimans and record data—you’ll witness them weighing, measuring and then tagging the caimans before releasing them back into the water.

Recommended Hotel: Karanambu Lodge

7. G Adventures Japan Family Journey

Hot on the heels of hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2019, Japan has no plans to slow down in 2020, as it’ll be hosting the Summer Olympics. Want to go? Consider a trip with G Adventures , which recently teamed up with National Geographic to launch family-specific itineraries. G Adventures’ travelers to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ have been steadily increasing, with an additional 23 percent growth in the past year.

Its 11-day Japan Family Journey starts in Tokyo, where families explore the dazzling uniqueness of this bustling city before heading to Kyoto and the mountain city of Nagano. Activities for families include practicing sumo wrestling and samurai swordplay and sampling a variety of wasabi-infused culinary delights (don’t worry, there are plenty of options, even for the pickiest eaters). This intimate experience means there won’t be more than 20 people in a group, and activity levels are appropriate for kids.

8. Tanzania

Africa for kids? Yes! Travel agents and African specialists agree that a safari can be the ultimate family vacation and no place does it better than Tanzania. The Elewana Collection camps and lodges have been designed to offer the whole family a comprehensive safari experience with an inspiring and educational slant. Each property offers specific activities geared toward families.

Of course, game drives are the big draw for all ages while on safari, but guides also love imparting knowledge and a love of Africa in the younger set, encouraging them to become the next custodians of this fragile area of the planet. Activities include village and school visits (where your kids can interact with the local children), conservation programs (chatting with anti-poaching teams to learn more about conservation), and learning about the traditional food and culture of the Tanzanian community.

At each camp, there’s also specific activies geared toward kids. In Elewana Manor at Ngorongoro, kids can go biking, go on farm visits to see local African animals and tour a coffee plantation to see how this valuable export is made. At Serengeti Pioneer Camp , kids can play safari bingo—going on game drives and walking safaris and crossing off the animals they see for a prize. At Serengeti Migration Camp , kids will learn traditions of the local people by making masks and jewelry .

Recommended Hotel: Elewana Manor at Ngorongoro

If the movie Frozen hasn’t already inspired your kids to visit Arendelle (which is based on the real Arendal in Norway), then the sequel definitely will. But beyond Frozen -inspired adventures , there are plenty of other kid-friendly destinations in Norway, such as the town of Hallingdal, which is located between Oslo and Bergen in Eastern Norway and has become a top location for family holidays. Here, the kids will love the Bjørneparken (“the bear park”), where families can get close (in a safe way, of course!) to bears, elk, lynx and even crocodiles. The nearby nature park at Langedrag allows kids the opportunity to see wolves, lynx and moose, and feed reindeer. Plus, nearby playgrounds and activities include a zipline and a brand-new water park for children.

Want an unusual place to play? Head to Gardnos meteorite park where a geologist will show you a real meteorite crater and talk about the rocks and nature that make up the area. Do you have little kids? Go to the town of the area around Lillehammer, less than two hours by train from Oslo Airport. At the Lilleputthammer miniature town in Hafjell, activities have been designed for children between 1 and 8 years old. Think small buildings perfect for the little ones to dress up in costumes , take part in arts and crafts activities, climb small towers and ride a miniature roller coaster and Ferris wheel. The little cars are also made for the junior set to cruise around.

Recommended Hotel: Scandic Hafjell

10. Fiji

Fiji is a great beach destination for families. At the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa , kids can take part in the Planet Trekkers Kids Club, which has pitch and putt, beach football, cricket, volleyball sessions and beach games .  The Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa has the Niu Beach Club for kids, which has lots of fun choices including a wet and wild splash area, an artist in residence with whom kids can tap tap into their creative side, and a climbing wall and trampoline area on the beach. Shangri-la Fijian Resort & Spa has a large floating water park and a “Kids Eat Free” program (for kids under  age 12), as well as kayaks, paddleboards and a variety of water sports for the whole family to enjoy.

Bonus: It just became easier for families to get to Fiji. Fiji Airways , Fiji’s national airline, has two new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. If you’re lucky enough to fly business class, that means fully lie-flat beds. But even if you’re flying economy, the seats are ranked among some of the most comfortable long-haul economy class seats available. Plus, the kids will love the seemingly endless entertainment options, fast Wi-Fi and the Fijian hospitality, with some of the friendlies flight attendants in the sky.

The thought of taking children on an international vacation can overwhelm parents -- with questions, if not anxiety: What to pack? Where to find food the little ones will actually eat? And how to keep them entertained?

Luckily, hotels and resorts can make traveling the world with your family easy. Our favorite, kid-friendly, international hotel and resorts offer amenities for families (like child care and kids' clubs), spacious guest rooms (equipped with useful items for babies and children) -- and activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Top products in this article:

Book a vacation at Club Med Quebec

Book a vacation at Amanyara in Turks and Caicos

Book a vacation at Hilton Cancun

We've compiled a list of some great international vacations that your family can enjoy this year. Take us up on one (or more!) of these recommendations, and you and you children could soon be skiing in the mountains of Canada, sightseeing in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe or simply enjoying the surf and sand in the tropics. We chose the below properties based on a variety of criteria, including great reviews on various travel websites, and unique, helpful and family-friendly amenities.

Club Med Quebec, Quebec City, Canada

lift-snow-d119-011-1.jpg

Club Med recently opened its newest all-season, all-inclusive, ski-in/ski-out mountain resort: Club Med Quebec. Spread out over 300 acres, the 302-room property caters to adults and children alike. Spacious guest rooms offer the perfect lodging for large families. Hit the slopes in the winter, or go mountain biking in the warmer months. Do these activities with your children -- or leave the little ones at the resort's kids' club, and let them enjoy entertainment, art projects and maybe even a ski or snowboard lesson. Other family activities and amenities include a circus school, yoga and pilates classes, an indoor pool, an outdoor hot tub and a Nordic-inspired spa. Like other Club Med properties, food, beverage and most activities are included in the price.

Half Moon, Montego Bay, Jamaica

half-moon.jpg

Sure, the white-sand beaches and clear-ocean waters at Half Moon, a Salamander Hotel & Resort property in Montego Bay, Jamaica, are a draw, but incredible conservationist experiences for kids set this sprawling resort apart from the other mega-chains on the island. One of the most unique attractions? Annually, the resort is home to more than 40 sea turtle nests. As part of its Turtle Release program for children and families, children and their families are invited to watch the baby turtles that hatch at Half Moon return to the sea. The resort also boasts an entire village designed just for kids aged 3 to 12. There, youngsters can learn, play, discover and make friends.

The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

rc-st-thomas-em-aerial.jpg

Yes, we know, a visit to the U.S. territory known as the U.S. Virgin Islands won't earn you a stamp in your passport. But while the island group isn't an international destination for American citizens (and doesn't require a passport for entry), the islands do offer an exotic experience. The island of St. Thomas, in particular, offers luxury lodgings galore. The recently renovated Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas is a great option for families.

The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas' new "Adventure for all Ages" package includes multiple family-friendly activities, like private charters, a guided kayak tour, a zipline experience, a private beach-movie night, and a stargazing sail on the property's house catamaran. The Ritz-Carlton brand recently relaunched its Ritz Kids program at the resort. Daily activities include iguana sightseeing, sandcastle competitions and more. Parents with babies can get access to everything from silicone bibs and spoons, to adjustable rockers and bedside sleepers, via the hotel's partnership with the luxury baby brand Beaba.

13 of the Best International Family Vacations

Anytime someone finds out how many countries I’ve visited (66 at the time of this writing) and especially how many I’ve visited with kids (currently 48), the next question is usually, “What is the best country to visit with kids?” And I usually struggle to answer about the best international family vacations.

The truth is, every country we’ve visited has had something inspiring, beautiful, and magical about it. We’ve connected with peoples and customs in each place, and generally found something delicious to eat.

That said, there are a few places that have been especially wonderful with kids. These are places where the kids have been warmly welcomed or had activities available that truly kept them in mind. These are places that were fun and interesting for the whole family. I hope they inspire you to go exploring with your family, too!

Morocco is one of those places that wasn’t really super high on our list, especially with kids. But we were taking a trip to Spain and Portugal, so decided to extend the trip to visit Morocco, as well. And boy are we glad we did! It quickly became one of our favorite international family vacations.

Morocco absolutely blew us away. It’s an incredibly diverse country with the kindest people. And there were so many incredible activities for the whole family. From staying in a bedouin camp in the Sahara Desert to wandering the old medina in Fez, we fell in love with it all. And one of the best parts was that kids were welcomed – and encouraged – absolutely everywhere. They’re very much expected to participate as a part of society and it’s lovely. It was the best country to visit with kids (or at least one of them).

Here’s our guide to visiting Morocco with kids , as well as a 10-Day Morocco itinerary .

international family travel packages

Having studied abroad in France, I definitely have a soft spot for the country. But many don’t, especially with kids. The French are often said to be rude, brusque, and intolerant of kids.

Fortunately, we’ve found the opposite to be true! While many French people, especially Parisians, tend to not be quite as warm and fuzzy as people from some other countries, we’ve found that a little effort of kindness (and the kids attempting a few French words) on our behalf goes a long way.

Plus, there are just so many amazing things to do in Paris with kids . We once spent a month there with 4 little ones in a home exchange and I truly think it’s one of the best international destinations with kids. Being in a local neighborhood coupled with seeing some amazing sites (some a bit off-the-beaten-path) was an incredible experience. And my kids still talk often about the cheese, pastries, and salads (my older daughter’s favorite)!

Best Things to Do In Paris With Kids featured by top US family travel blog, Local Passport Family: image of a family visit to paris eiffel tower from trocadero

Of course, with lots of family in India and having visited there a number of times growing up, India is definitely special to me. And it was incredible being able to take our own little ones there! It’s definitely one of the best countries to visit with kids.

One wonderful thing about visiting India with kids is how absolutely welcoming everyone is to little ones. In Hinduism, children are incredibly important and are to be treated with utmost kindness, respect, and love. It’s not uncommon for people to want to give kids sweets and other snacks, and to pinch their cheeks while out and about. It can feel a little strange to those from less forward cultures, but it’s typically done out of love. This doesn’t mean you have to accept, of course, but it’s nice to know that it’s not an abnormal thing there.

India is also a very inexpensive destination to travel once you get there. Food and accommodations tend to cost much less than many other countries, making it easier to travel with kids in India.

Here are 7 reasons to visit India with kids , and an authentic and easy mango lassi recipe if you want to get a taste of India right from home.

Visiting the Galapagos Islands had been a dream destination of ours for years and years. And it 100% lived up to our expectations. What we didn’t expect was to love the rest of the country just as much.

For wildlife lovers, an Ecuador family vacation is an absolute dream. From visiting the Amazon rainforest to swimming with sea turtles in the Galapagos, it was incredible throughout. And the people were so kind and welcoming to little ones, too. Definitely one of the best international destinations for families!

Here are some pros and cons to a land tour or a cruise when visiting the Galapagos with kids .

United Kingdom

I’m one of those people who just absolutely adores London. And a big part of that is because of how amazing it is with kids!

There’s something incredible about seeing really iconic sites, of course, but I also love the oodles of history and culture around every corner. And the best part is that so many museums are free! This means we feel free to check out a lot of them, and don’t feel pressured to stay beyond what our kids can handle. So we actually are able to enjoy more museums and leave our kids feeling like they enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to return, instead of dreading those visits. Plus, who can resist the appeal of the top deck of a double decker bus??

Not to mention, London is only a tiny piece of the UK. We loved the stunning beauty of Wales and Scotland, and Edinburgh is another winner of a city.

Here’s our 3 day London itinerary with kids !

Afternoon tea in London with kids

There are few places that my kids have fell in love with like Thailand. Though our experience there was just under a week (we stopped over on our way back from India), we all connected so much and the kids immediately started asking to return. It was one of the best countries to visit with family.

From the rich cultural and religious history in Bangkok to the beautiful beaches and warm waters of southern Thailand, we loved it all. We’re anxious to go back and explore more of the country – it’s one of the best international trips for families.

Here’s a fun way to learn more about Thailand with kids !

While we had hoped to visit Israel for years before we went, Jordan was a bit of an add-on. It seemed that while we were so close, it was a good opportunity explore some related cultural, historic, and religious sites. We honestly had no idea that it would be so incredible.

But Jordan quickly became one of our very favorite places to visit and I would return in a heartbeat. I absolutely loved places like Petra and the Wadi Rum desert, but also lesser known ruins. I loved that it was quiet outside major cities and bustling within. I loved that the number of American tourists, and tourists in general, was fairly small, and it was easy to immerse ourselves in local culture and customs. And we loved the food!! It was one of the best overseas family vacations.

Here’s our suggested one week Jordan itinerary with kids , as well as how to spend one day in Petra !

We’ve loved a lot of international family vacations, but Italy was near the top. There’s just something so delightful about visiting Italy with kids. Of course, the people tend to gush over and really love children, which certainly helps.

But even with all the museums and walking, my kids fell in love. Maybe it was the promise of gelato with practically every stop, but we seemed to never tire of the delightful passageways, beautiful buildings, and charming cafes. And having everything from beach to climbing historic buildings (like the Duomo or Leaning Tower of Pisa) to delicious food made it a perfect international family vacation for all ages.

Here are some ways we visited Italy on a budget , and here are 5 different amazing Italy itinerary options !

New Zealand

To us, New Zealand felt like a magical fairyland with freedom to run and play in the most intense natural beauty. In short, New Zealand is stunning.

And it seems that gorgeous lakes and waterfalls and boat rides are a dime a dozen. There are so many adventures for kids of all ages – from babies to adults. Of course, the more adventuresome will find plenty of high-intensity activities, but even the youngest ones will find plenty of places to explore while surrounded by gorgeous vistas. Plus, I experienced an unforgettable shower there. 🙂

international family travel packages

I don’t know that I’ve ever visited a place on an international family trip before that had so many child-friendly amenities. Honestly, we were blown away!

Every museum and castle had robust, beautiful, and educational areas for children. The children’s menus were not throw-away foods; instead, they were balanced and beautiful and much less expensive than the adult meals. Activities and museums were almost always free, and occasional cheaper with kids. (There was one museum that was actually cheaper for a family pass for 2 adults and children than it was to just pay for 2 adults!)

So while it’s definitely tricky to visit Sweden on a budget, we found that the accommodations for kids definitely had a big impact. We found this to be very similar in Norway – also expensive, also lots of accommodations for children. Even the train cars had incredible children’s play areas, and children’s tickets were very inexpensive.

Here are 7 reasons to visit Sweden with kids !

South Africa

There are few more gorgeous cities in the world than Cape Town. It’s absolutely stunning! And the entire country has a fascinating, if sometimes very harsh, history.

While we visited when our oldest was a baby, I’d absolutely love to return with all our kids now. I’m certain they’d be over the moon for the safaris, of course. And the history of apartheid, while difficult to discuss, would provide inroads to start needed difficult conversations. The history is so fresh, raw, and salient there, and I want my kids to understand that advocacy is important in the present. The variety makes it one of the best international trips with kids.

El Salvador

If I’m being perfectly honest, El Salvador was definitely not a full international family holiday for us. Instead, we had a long layover of one full day and a couple nights. But this should tell you how amazing it is because we fell in love even in that short period of time – it became one of our favorite international trips for kids!

The outdoor adventures in El Salvador are plentiful and wonderful for kids. While there are tons of large-scale ones for adults, there are also oodles of incredible places to explore with little ones. Our kids were obsessed with a waterfall area (even the youngest ones loved climbing and splashing!) and we all delighted in our first surfing lessons ever. Such an incredible place with the kindest people. We’d love to return to explore further.

Here’s what to do with one day in San Salvador .

We were thrilled to visit Portugal as my husband lived in Brazil for a couple years and was excited to brush up on his Portuguese. (Turns out Portugal Portuguese is quite different, but he was still able to communicate just fine!) And we loved everything else about it, too!

Living near San Francisco in California, it was so fun to see another city that was the most similar to it that we’ve seen. Lisbon was so fun to explore! But we really fell hard for Porto – a city with the most gorgeous tile, delicious food, and stunning views. The Algarve had some of the most gorgeous rock formations and blue water that we’d seen. It was all stunning!

Here are 10 tips for visiting Portugal with kids .

The Best First-Time International Trips for Families, According to a Travel Expert

Taking your family abroad for the first time? T+L A-List advisor Christie Holmes recommends these crowd-pleasing destinations.

Joao Inacio/Getty Images

As  Global CommUnity Travel’s  co-founder, I love fielding the question, “Where should I take my kids on their first international trip?” While exploring the options (there are many!) is exciting, it can also feel overwhelming.

To help narrow your choices, consider a few questions. Are you longing for rugged (or tame) outdoor adventures? Does a culturally focused, urban journey pique your interest? Or are you after a beachy paradise with plenty of room for watersports? I’ve found most families enjoy destinations with activities from two or more of these categories.

In fact, Global CommUnity’s three most requested first-time family vacation destinations — Costa Rica, Portugal, and Italy — check all three boxes. Here’s why family travelers love these destinations.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Outdoor Adventures in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an ideal destination for families on their first international trip. Flights from the U.S. are short, affordable, and within two (or fewer) time zones. English is widely spoken, and American dollars are welcome.

Outdoor adventure and chances to observe wildlife prove plentiful, from lush rainforests to towering waterfalls and pristine beaches. Family-friendly activities include kayaking, river tubing, rock climbing, wildcat feeding, night frog walks, wildlife sanctuary tours, and more.

Visiting Costa Rica means experiencing its life-changing local culture, Pura Vida (the pure or simple life), firsthand. And Costa Rica’s uber-fresh cuisine satisfies even the pickiest eaters. Pro Tip: Our half-day chocolate tour and waterfall adventure is a smash hit with kids and adults!

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Cultural Discovery in Portugal

Portugal is a quick flight from the East Coast, yet you’ll feel transported to another world.  Candy-colored villages, rugged Atlantic coastline, golden-hued beaches, and time-honored cities welcome visitors.

With firm borders since A.D. 1139, Portugal is the oldest country in Europe, boasting a cultural heritage to prove it! Crack the secret recipe for  pastel de nata , Portugal’s iconic egg tart, with a renowned baker in Mafra. Explore ancient and medieval Lisbon, the nation’s capital, on a tour steeped in history and legend.

Savor the wine country at São Lorenço, a pastoral 200-year-old estate near Lake Alqueva. Besides tastings, wine country affords myriad cultural activities for families, including custom bike tours, archaeological guided visits, hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, fishing, and boat tours.

Beach Time on the Italian Riviera

Italy has it all when it comes to outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and luxurious beaches. Dynamic cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice overflow with cosmopolitan culture. And the pastoral countryside invites families to discover organic farms and vineyards that fuel the nation’s delectable cuisine and delightful viticulture.

The Italian Riviera means endless beaches, watersports galore, and resort-style living. From stunning cliffside towns to posh resorts and the colorful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre , you’ll never run out of kid-friendly places to explore.

Beaches entice sunbathers, swimmers, and sandcastle builders. The clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean encourage snorkeling and sailboat trips to sunny, remote islands. Incredible cuisine (hello gelato!) and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere provide the exclamation point to an unforgettable first-time family vacation.

21 best all-inclusive resorts for families

Tarah Chieffi

Whether you spend your days relaxing on the beach or searching for adventure, the best family vacations should leave the whole family feeling rested, rejuvenated and inspired.

When you vacation at an all-inclusive resort , you have more opportunities to welcome those feelings of relaxation and discovery because there's no need to worry about being nickel-and-dimed for every meal or activity — most of those costs are already included in your room rate. That's not to say all-inclusive resorts are all the same, though.

In the same way that all families are different, every all-inclusive resort is unique in terms of its locale, accommodations, dining options and service, among other factors. One thing they all have in common, though, is that the price you pay covers your room, dining and many on-site activities (and occasionally alcoholic beverages for the adults). That means you can leave the everyday grind behind and enjoy a cost-conscious vacation without sacrificing quality.

Without further ado, these are our favorite family-friendly, all-inclusive resorts to consider booking for your next vacation.

Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana is only 15 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) along the shores of Juanillo Beach. The resort has 375 oceanfront suites, including swim-up suites for families with children ages 13 and older. Dining options range from local Caribbean specialties to a wellness-focused restaurant with smoothies and vegan offerings and 24-hour room service for a late-night bite.

The resort's water park has winding waterslides for older kids and adults, a splash area with pint-size slides for the littles plus a lazy river the whole family can enjoy together. Parents who want to retreat to a private cabana for the afternoon can drop the kids off at the kids club (complete with an indoor treehouse). There's also a teen club for guests ages 13 to 17.

Pricing for Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana starts at around $630 or 35,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a family of four.

The Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya is actually two resorts in one. The Hacienda section welcomes adults and kids, while the Heaven section is for adults only.

Kids ages 4 to 12 can play the day away at the Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club while parents relax and enjoy bottomless cocktails at the adults-only pool or indulge at the full-service spa (for an additional fee). There are also daily activities like treasure hunts, crafts projects and pool games that families can participate in together.

The family can meet back up for a swim at the resort's private beach, enjoy family time at the Rockaway Bay water park and have a meal in one of the resort's eight dining establishments, such as the wood-fired pizzas at Pizzeto.

The ideal room type for families is the two-bedroom deluxe family room with one king and two double beds. It also has a balcony with a hammock, separate minibars for kids and adults and cozy bathrobes for adults and kids (how adorable is that?). True to the brand's rockin' roots, you can have a Crosley turntable or Fender guitar delivered to your room to use during your stay.

Pricing for Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya starts at around $500 per night for a family of four staying in a room with two double beds.

Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa offers 489 guest rooms in one large building, meaning you are never too far from the resort's exciting amenities. The friendly staff will not hesitate to get you involved in the included activities — a befitting perk for outgoing families. Guests can also borrow kayaks and paddleboards to take out on the water.

Hotels with water parks are a key ingredient for successful family vacations, and Hilton Rose Hall's Sugar Mill Falls water park is one of Jamaica's largest. There's a large pool, a lazy river and a multilevel waterslide.

The spa offers indoor and beachside treatments (for an additional fee). There are also separate clubs for kids and teens with age-appropriate games and activities.

Pricing for Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa starts at around $550 or 100,000 Hilton Honors points per night for a family of four. Children under age 3 stay for free.

Giraffe Manor is not your typical all-inclusive resort. The resort has only 12 rooms — no two alike, but all equally charming — split between the Manor House and Garden Manor. Some rooms are situated in such a way that the namesake giraffes may wander up to your window in search of a small snack, but there are ample opportunities to interact with all of the giraffes who reside here.

You are likely to encounter a friendly giraffe poking his head in the window as you eat breakfast or strolling up to the terrace as you enjoy your afternoon tea. Don't worry, the hotel provides feeding pellets so they won't come after your meal (feeding pellets are provided in guest rooms with giraffe-feeding access, as well).

Pricing includes accommodations, airport transfers, all meals, most alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and select activities.

Fully inclusive pricing for Giraffe Manor starts at $1,168 per person for adults and $805 for children.

As soon as you pull up to Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya , there's no denying it's a vacation destination designed for kids … and kids at heart. Included activities range from pajama character breakfasts to live game shows. Dining, kids club access (for kids ages 4 to 12) and water park admission also come with the cost of your stay.

Brightly decorated rooms are a nod to popular Nickelodeon cartoons "SpongeBob SquarePants" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." There are daily character meet-and-greets, and, yes, you really can have gallons of green slime dumped over your head (you'll even get a photo to commemorate the experience).

The resort offers fun-filled seasonal events like the Summer of SpongeBob, Nick Jr. Friends Event and holiday celebrations. Another perk kids and parents will love: All rooms have swim-up access to either the main resort pool or your own balcony pool.

Pricing for Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya starts at around $1,100 per night for a family of four. Certain dates require a three-night minimum stay.

Club Med has probably the most comprehensive lineup of activities and experiences of any all-inclusive brand.

For those with relaxation in mind, Club Med Punta Cana has three outdoor pools, shaded loungers lining the beach and spacious, ocean-facing family suites where you can listen to the waves gently crashing when you need some downtime. The family suites have a sleeping area for parents with a king bed, a separate room for kids with two twin beds and a living area that opens to a furnished terrace.

Restaurants serve international and local cuisines and are convenient to the beach, the lagoon pool and the resort's main bar.

If you prefer an always-on-the-go vacation, you can perfect your acrobatic skills at circus school, head out on the water in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard, or test your skills with a bow and arrow.

While most all-inclusive resorts do not provide complimentary care for infants and toddlers, Club Med's kids clubs are available to kids as young as 4 months of age.

Pricing for Club Med Punta Cana starts at around $500 per night for a family of four. Children age 3 and under are free.

The Sheraton Samui Resort is a budget-friendly resort located directly on Chaweng Noi Beach. Chaweng Noi is quieter and more secluded than other nearby beaches, leaving its wide swaths of soft sand and calm, crystalline waters (don't forget your snorkeling gear) wide open for families looking for a laid-back tropical vacation.

Unlike traditional all-inclusive resorts, you must choose the all-inclusive package to receive all-inclusive benefits. Room-only rates are also available. The base all-inclusive package includes meals, nonalcoholic beverages, activities, a one-hour beachside massage, a cooking class and airport transfers. You can upgrade to packages that include alcoholic beverages and additional spa treatments.

The resort has two pools — one freshwater and one saltwater — where kids can swim while parents lounge on one of the poolside daybeds. There's also a beachfront kids club with toys, games and activities that kids can enjoy while parents visit the spa for a massage or hit the tennis courts for a friendly competition.

All-inclusive room rates for Sheraton Samui Resort start at around $360 per night for a family of four. Marriott Bonvoy points cannot be redeemed for the all-inclusive package.

An on-site kids club is available for kids ages 3 to 12.

Even though Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa is less than 2 miles from St. Lucia's Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) and less than an hour from popular area attractions like the Pitons and Sulphur Springs, it feels like a secluded island paradise.

It helps that the resort sits on a 1-mile stretch of beach and has eight restaurants, seven bars and five pools to serve only 250 guest rooms. Among the dining options, don't miss the Jerk Treehouse on the beach or the Silk fine dining fusion restaurant for dinner.

The rooms are split between an adults-only Harmony section and a family-centered Splash section . At Splash, families can stay in spacious rooms with private balconies that overlook the waterslides, lazy river and water playground at the water park .

In addition to the typical kids club activities , children have access to an animal sanctuary, nature walks and meet-and-greets with the resort's larger-than-life coconut mascots, Coco and Loco.

Pricing for Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa starts at around $369 per night for a family of four.

What is typically included at an all-inclusive resort?

So, what does "all-inclusive" mean? It means there is a good chance you won't have to pull out your wallet even once while you are at your resort. More specifically, most meals, drinks, activities, minibar items, kids club access and water sports — and sometimes gratuities — are included in the cost of your room. Things that aren't included are typically specialty meals (like beachfront dining), spa treatments and excursions.

Because your room rate is all-inclusive, the cost of your room is based on the number of adults and children in your room. At some all-inclusive resorts, children can stay for free or at a reduced rate, so be sure you input the correct information when pricing out your vacation.

How do I choose an all-inclusive resort for my family?

There are a lot of all-inclusive resorts in the world, and many offer high-quality experiences for the whole family. So, how do you narrow it down? When you're trying to choose the best all-inclusive resort for your own family, you'll want to consider a handful of factors. Aside from the obvious ones, like location and budget, think about the types of experiences your family will enjoy. If you're an outdoorsy group, consider properties that offer lots of excursions, whether that's snorkeling and kayaking or zip-lining and guided hikes. If you're a food-focused family, you might want to opt for a resort that's known for its incredible dining options.

Another thing to consider is whether the resort has a kids club. Often, parents will want a little time away from the kids (or vice versa!) and on-site kids clubs can ensure that activities are tailored to different age groups.

I simply adore the time I spend with my grand-family. Yes to international family travel vacations with ALL the family. And most definitely yes to skip-gen trip with just me and my grandkids – although sometimes Papa comes along for the fun.  But it’s a big world out there, and this Grammie loves to travel, so the question remains?  Where are the best international family vacations for multigenerational travel?

I’ve got my favorites, but I also enlisted a lot of help from my family travel blogger friends including these family bucket list destinations . Read on my family travelers, go ahead and create your own international multigenerational family vacation — but do share your favorites with me!

1. London, England

All aboard a double-decker bus to visit iconic attractions in London, England, like Big Ben.

Hop-on-and-hop-off the bus all day and discover the iconic Big Ben clock tower, Westminster Abbey, the Palace and the changing of the guards, the London Eye observation wheel with panoramic views of the Thames River and the South Bank, plus so much more.

If you have more time, I’d highly suggest an Eating Europe London East End Food Tour This guided tour is a great way to explore neighborhoods, learn about its history all while enjoying the local cuisine

On our latest visit, we chose to stay near the Tube at The Colonnade Hotel in Little Venice, set in the quiet family-friendly Naida Vale neighborhood, walking distance to the Warwick Avenue Underground on the Bakerloo Line. While this particular visit I wasn’t traveling with the multigenerational family, the hotel’s second-story loft suite would be perfect for families.

For more tips for visiting London, read more about Best Places to Visit when in London and Uncovering the Darker Side of London .

When visiting Ireland with your family, everyone can feel like royalty when booking a room at Dromoland Castle.

I could live in the beautiful and welcoming country of Ireland. Dublin is one of the best family vacation destinations for multigenerational travel as there is so much to see and do.

Like London, I feel this city is best explored by using the City-Sightseeing double-decker bus to transport you to all the iconic places in Dublin . These buses stop at more than 30 places, including Temple Bar, Dublin Castle, Guinness Storehouse, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Merrion Square, and much much more.

And since you’ve already chosen Ireland for your international family vacations, go ahead and explore more of the Emerald Isle. I’d also recommended adding a night to visit Belfast and the Titanic Museum. Then continue on a road trip exploring and experiencing Ireland’s rugged landscape and dramatic sea cliffs along the Wild Atlantic Way and the Giants Causeway.

Other awe-inspiring stops included Slieve League Cliffs, The Burren, Ailwee Caves & Cliffs of Moher.  As a fan of Game of Thrones, I also planned a stop at the Dark Hedges, a tunnel of beech trees featured in Season 2, Episode 1, and in typical Irish fashion, we also experienced a steady dose of rain.

Here are my favorite hotels to stay in Ireland.

3. Nice, South of France

Nice, South of France, is a favorite for international multigenerational family travel. Photo: Clare, Epic Road Rides

~Contributed by Clare, Epic Road Rides

Nice, on the Cote d’Azur in the south of France, is a brilliant choice for a multigenerational family vacation. For adults, there’s a fantastic range of restaurants, bars and cafés, beautiful Belle Epoque architecture and art galleries. Artists including Picasso, Chagall, and Matisse made the French Riviera their home and Nice is home to the Chagall museum, as well as more contemporary works in the modern art gallery, MAMAC. For adults that happen to love cycling, Nice is also a world-class cycling destination!

For kids, Nice offers the beach, the Promenade des Anglais for cycling/scooting/skateboarding, a huge, traditional carousel and awesome parks and playgrounds. Our favorite park is the Promenade de Paillon. This park winds its way through Nice and contains a huge whale climbing frame and series of automated fountains that kids (and adults!) love to run through.

We stayed in an Airbnb property on the Place Garibaldi, between the port and Promenade de Papillon. This is a fantastic location, as you’re on a historic square and close to everything Nice has to offer. Nice has something for all the family. We highly recommend it!

4. Algarve,  Portugal

The Algarve region of southern Portugal is an ideal destination for a multigenerational family holiday. As well as family-oriented adventure and water and fun parks and an array of beaches in reasonably protected bays, there’s also a vast network of walking trails of varying duration and levels of challenge for those who enjoy the outdoors. Typical Portuguese restaurants are renowned for accommodating families although you should book ahead for large groups.

For adults who want a dose of culture, this is easy to find in the Algarve. Towns like Silves with its red sandstone castle and pretty cobbled streets can be fun for all ages while the region’s capital city, Faro, has several museums and art galleries to explore and a chilling bone chapel.

Where you stay will depend on many factors, but a good base for all ages is Lagos, which has plenty of restaurants, shops, great beaches, and fun activities. It also has a train line that connects you with central and eastern Algarve and buses to other destinations. Look for accommodation near the marina or towards Praia do Canavial or Meia Praia instead of the old town as this can be noisy in high season.

5. Barcelona, Spain

A popular European destination, Barcelona is often seen as a magnet for young singles looking for pretty Instagram shots. But, this Mediterranean city actually has a wide variety of attractions for all ages! The Gothic Quarter is fun for everyone to explore! Adults will love learning about the historic Roman columns and squares. Kids can play in leafy plazas, and parents can relax nearby at the charming terrace bars.

We can’t forget about the mass appeal of the architecture of Antoni Gaudí as well. His masterpieces like the Sagrada Familia and Park Guell fascinate children with their vibrant colors and organic shapes. Adults will be intrigued to learn about the symbolic details in each of Gaudí’s works. For example, the Sagrada Familia’s interior was designed to emulate a heavenly forest.

In a city of 1.6 million people, Barcelona is a versatile destination, which fails to bore any visitor, even if you have just one day in this Spanish city.

For a place to stay, I recommend the Barcelona Catedral Hotel in the Gothic Quarter, which is near most of the Barcelona attractions. It has also a rooftop view and a swimming pool that the kids will love!

6. Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany

The perfect international destination for multigenerational family travel is Oberwesel, Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Germany.

~Contributed by Katrin Walzl, Moon & Honey Travel

Germany’s Romantic Rhine Valley, also known as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, is a perfect holiday destination for families. Famed for its hilltop castles, steep vineyards, and medieval towns, this UNESCO World Heritage Site can be experienced in many ways.

Parents and their adult children can savor Riesling in the valley’s many wine taverns, or cruise the Rhine River between the cities of Koblenz and the towns of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Bingen.

Families with children can embark on a tour of the region’s many castles starting with Schloss Stolzenfels, Marksburg, Burg Rheinfels, and Burg Reichenstein.

Active families should consider hiking a segment of the famous Rhine Castle Trail for epic views of the Rhine Gorge. Stage 10, between the towns of Oberwesel and Sankt Goar, is not to be missed.

7. Lapland, Finland

~Contributed by Dandt, The Elusive Family

Nowhere in the world can you find more Santas, snow or activities geared toward the holidays than you can in Lapland, Finland.  Lapland is a region that spans the northernmost part of Finland, home to the official town of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, Finland.  It is the perfect place to take everyone in the family, from grandparents to the tiniest little people.  If you are going to Lapland with kids, it is a magical place to visit year-round, with family-friendly activities and a host of things to see and do.

Going on a sleigh ride with reindeer, husky sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling, visiting Santa Park, chasing the northern lights, and meeting Santa are just a few family-friendly activities that can be done with people of all ages. Tour operators easily accommodate all age groups and ensure everything is ready for the whole family.

The best, most central place for all this is Rovaniemi where you can stay at the Official Santa Claus Holiday Village.

In addition to Rovaniemi, there are a host of other cities to visit in Lapland including Saariiselka, Yllas, and Levi.  Doing any day trips in Lapland is entirely possible from city to city and a wonderful way to experience the region with everyone in the family.

8. Riga, Latvia

Riga is the capital of Latvia, and offers so much for multigenerational family travelers to enjoy, from exploring its cobblestoned streets and its art noveau architecture to experiencing its fantastic foodie scene.

~Contributed by Julie, Why Not Ju

Riga is the capital of Latvia and the biggest city in the Baltic states and located in the river mouth of Daugava River. It used to be an important port for European trade dating back all the way to the Viking age. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, acknowledged for its wooden buildings and Art Nouveau architecture. In fact, Riga has the highest number of Art Nouveau buildings in the world.

The old town’s cobblestoned streets are pedestrians only, perfect for a day of walking around in calmness and enjoying the surroundings. The area has plenty of museums and cafes to take shelters in for rainy days. You can spend hours learning about Latvian and Baltic history or people spotting and tasting the local cuisine. The river and canal cruises from Riga’s old town are wonderful activities for the whole family as well.

Riga is famous for its spas and several of the hostels already offer spa access included with your room at certain times a day. Riga is a perfect multigenerational destination with its beauty, relatively short walking distances and variated attractions!

9. Baltic Sea Cruise

"<yoastmark

A Baltic Sea Cruise has been on my travel bucket list since I was a pre-teen and became fascinated with genealogy. My great-grandparents (on my father’s side) immigrated here from Norway, and my mother’s side of the family came from Norway and Sweden.

While in the past cruising wasn’t at the top of my list, Regent Seven Seas Cruise line and their Baltic Sea itinerary won me over.  For families, it’s great to unpack and stay while checking multiple destinations off your family travel bucket list.

Regent Seven Seas offers luxury cruises visiting over 300 ports worldwide. With the theme of Vikings & Monarchs, my Regent Baltic Sea cruise began in Copenhagen, Denmark and ended in Stockholm, Sweden. The cruise also included stops in the ports of Warnemünde (Rostock), Germany; Klaipeda, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; Helsinki, Finland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Tallinn, Estonia.  And the best reason: these shore excursions are included in the price of your cruise, but be sure to book your excursions early as the popular ones fill up fast!

10. Zakopane, Poland

Take the family traveling to experience the small town of

~Contributed by Holly, Four Around the World

Zakopane is a small town located in the south of Poland. It is especially popular during the winter months when it becomes a perfect wonderland for winter sports. Situated at the base of the Tatra Mountains, Zakopane is a wonderful multigenerational destination to visit.

During the winter months, enjoy the beautiful snow-capped scenery as it comes alive with the festive season. We spent a family Christmas in Zakopane many years ago, with our extended family and friends and it could not have been a better place for it.

There is plenty to see and do no matter what season it is, with the scenery and rich culture appealing to the older generations and the adventure activities keeping the kids and young at heart entertained. A visit to the markets and some traditional Polish street food is a must, plus catching the funicular up Mt Gubalowka.

The best way to experience Zakopane is by renting a private home for your stay, rather than staying in a hotel. This is a far more popular option and it gives you plenty of room to stay as a family, fully self-contained and comfortable.

11. Wroclaw, Poland

Another beautiful city in Poland, Wroclaw, is a top pick for international multigenerational family travel destinations

~Contributed by Joanna, Overhere

Wroclaw is a beautiful city in southern Poland, located on Oder river banks. There are many tourist attractions in Wroclaw suitable for travelers of all ages – it’s a perfect multigenerational vacation destination.

Wroclaw is famous for gnomes figurines places randomly in different parts of the city. Looking for gnomes is a fun activity not only for kids.

Other great family attraction in Wroclaw is the zoo. It’s the oldest zoological park in Poland! The most interesting part of Wroclaw zoo is Afrykarium – it’s the first oceanarium in Poland presenting African fauna and flora. There are over 200 species in Afrykarium, so visit in this amazing museum will be of educational value for all members of your family.

Another fantastic place to visit in Wroclaw is Hydropolis – a multimedia exhibition which covers all the information possible about water. Thanks to numerous interactive exhibits, Hydropolis is one of the most interesting places in Wroclaw.

One of the best places to stay in Wroclaw is the Hotel Patio. Located close to the city centre, this hotel offers comfortable rooms, full board at the hotel restaurant, and the kids’ zone in the lobby.

Visit Italy: 1 of 5 must see places includes Rome's Trevi Fountain.

My first international travel was to Italy. After spending 3 weeks exploring the entire country, from Milan to Venice, Florence to Tuscany region, Rome to Pompeii, I was hooked.

The wine. The food. The locals. The history. I simply loved this country and can’t wait to return — and to take the multigenerational family. One of our favorite things to do are food tours, such as this Rome Family Food & Art Experience.

When you do visit, here are the 5 must-see places in Italy.

international family travel packages

We are very lucky in that we have an extremely close relationship with my partner’s parents and travel with them quite often, as well as our young children. Recently, we all traveled to Bali for a holiday and there really was something for everyone!

My mother-in-law and I both love our retail therapy, so we spent hours wandering around the local markets together. She was on the hunt for beautiful fabrics for her sewing projects, and I found some great dresses and accessories to take home. All three generations enjoyed plenty of relaxing days at the beach or around the pool soaking up the sun and playing in the waves with my toddler. My partner surfed while my father-in-law built sandcastles with my daughter and everyone was happy.

Eating out was easy, with plenty of options for everyone from western food and chain restaurants to some fantastic local warungs (casual Balinese eateries).

Whether you’re looking for a cultural adventure, lazy beach days or some serious retail therapy, Bali is the perfect destination for a multi-generational holiday!

15. Kangaroo Island, Australia

Have camera ready as your family experiences all that Kangaroo Island, Australia, has to offer.

~Contributed by Delphine, Lester Lost

Australia is a destination that appeals to many types of travelers. Families, solo travelers, couples, backpackers. Finding a destination for a multi-generation wasn’t too hard. My father, 10-year-old nephew, and I opted for 5 days on Kangaroo Island in South Australia.

A large island off the south coast of Australia, Kangaroo Island is famous for its spectacular natural landmarks and its plentiful wildlife. In 5 days, we came across kangaroos, koalas, pelicans, seals, sea lions and dolphins. With a party of two keen photographers and a young boy, everyone enjoyed the encounters that had a taste of adventure.

Kangaroo Island is a big island and there is a fair amount of driving to be done. However, the roads are flat and fairly quiet so it wasn’t stressful. Kangaroo Island also has its share of beautiful beaches, much to the delight of our young companion.

In order to keep everyone happy, we were able to mix the visits to old towns and lighthouses with sandboarding on beautiful dunes! Five days of multi-generational travel on Kangaroo Island created some life-long memories for all of us!

16. The Maldives

Known for its beaches, blue lagoons, and extensive reefs, The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands

~Contributed by Sara, Our Kind of Crazy Blog

The Maldives is the perfect destination for young and old. It’s a dream vacation for the adults, and will soon be for the kids as well. The Maldives is made up of local islands and resort islands. The resort islands are probably best for the multi-generational trips, as most resorts have activities that will cater to any age group.

We found a great resort in Robinson Club Noonu, an all-inclusive family resort. All you can eat, all you can drink, and all you can do. There’s a buffet with so many food choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so even your picky eaters will find something they’ll love.

Activities during the day range from pool time, walking around the island, enjoying the spa, playing sports on the courts, games in the recreational area, and of course, snorkeling right outside your room. You can even rent an overwater bungalow complete with your own private infinity pool and hammock over the water.

Robinson Club Noonu also offers a child center, so the kids won’t get bored, and the adults can enjoy some alone time. Definitely, the perfect multi-generational trip your family won’t soon forget!

17. Luxury African Safari

Fulfill your African safari bucket list vacation with these 5 Luxurious Safari Resorts in Africa

An African safari sits high on my family’s travel bucket list, as there’s just something so appealing about being at one with nature, out in the plains of Africa and the thrill of seeing animals in the wild. Since I’m not the tent-in-the-bush-kind-of-traveler, I am looking more toward luxurious safari resorts in Africa. Here are  5 top luxurious safari resorts in Africa .

18. Cozumel, Mexico

Imagine you and your next multigenerational family vacation here, Cozumel, Mexico, relaxing and enjoying the sunset.

~Contributed by Philip, Zen Travellers

Cozumel, Mexico is a beautiful travel destination that has something for any age.   Young kids will enjoy playing on the fantastic beaches while the order crowd might enjoy some time relaxing or watching the little ones…maybe even enjoying a few margaritas while doing so.  Speaking of margaritas, the older members of the family will certainly want to do a tequila tasting.  No kids allowed here, of course!

Another highlight that will be educational for the whole family is visiting the San Gervasio Mayan ruins.  These ruins used to be a place of worship for the Mayan goddess Ix Chel, a goddess of childbirth, fertility, medicine, and weaving.

Of course, there is a fantastic food scene with all of the Mexican staples and there are a lot of familiar North American restaurants for the picky eaters in the family.

Those old enough to do so will likely want to spend some time in the waters scuba diving, and the younger ones can get their exposure to marine life by snorkeling.  The reefs are teeming with fish and if you’re lucky you’ll spot sea turtles, eagle rays, or nurse sharks.

If you’re staying with the whole family I recommend booking an Airbnb as they will give you enough space for everyone and most likely, a kitchen where you can cook some of your meals.

Multi-generational families will certainly find something that everyone can enjoy in this little slice of paradise!

19. Dominican Republic

The Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana Resort in Dominican Republic is a great option for multigenerational family travel.

~Contributed by Sharon, Daily Dream 360

With resorts scattered amongst its biggest coastal cities and numerous excursion opportunities, the Dominican Republic is an excellent destination for multi-generational trips. The majority of resorts are built to provide experiences for all ages providing a variety of services, activities and room accommodations. Resorts are tremendous for multi-gen trips as they can accommodate large group bookings. Depending on the number of people traveling, you’ll find booking a resort experience in the DR very easy.

One of the top places to stay in the DR is Punta Cana . Choose a resort like the Grand Bahia Principe Punta Cana which offers a variety of rooms and suites which connect into an ample space, but still provides privacy for members of your family. Most of the larger resorts feature kids clubs for young children and teenagers which offer programs geared to specific age ranges. These include arts and crafts, sports and swimming programs.

At the main pools and the beach, you will find numerous daily activities from water aerobics, water sports, and games run by the resorts’ activity staff. For those who want to relax, check if the resort has a quiet pool where you can hide away and escape with a book. The family can split up and experience different things or hang out together and explore all that the resort can offer.

I also love the many excursions available in the Dominican Republic, from family-friendly catamaran tours , visits to Saona Island National Park, to Dune buggy rides . Of course, the family can celebrate their days and special occasions at the many resort restaurants and top it off with a spectacular show.

20. Jamaica

A beautiful sunny day in Ocho Rios in Jamaica, one of the best international family vacation destinations for multigenerational travel.

~Contributed by Charmaine, Jamaica Travel Saver

Jamaica is guaranteed to provide the ultimate family vacation and satisfy the needs of all your loved ones.   For such a small island, it packs quite a punch when it comes to activities available.

If I were to pick the most family-friendly area in Jamaica that would be the town of Ocho Rios.  Kids will like it because they can visit kid-friendly attractions such as Dolphin Cove, Mystic Mountain, Konoko falls, or Yaaman Adventure Park.   Parents will like the all-natural attractions such as Dunns River falls or the Blue Hole.  Grandparents will like the fact that they can enjoy the nearby golf course, go bamboo rafting, enjoy cooking classes, or take great house tours.

There are a variety of accommodations in Jamaica that will satisfy even the most discerning family.  However, if I were to pick one hotel, I would select Beaches Ocho Rios.

For younger kids, Beaches Ocho Rios offers a sesame street themed kid’s camp supervised by certified nannies.  For older kids, there is an Xbox play lounge, a pirate island waterpark, and a teen nightclub.  Adults will love its world-class spa, sunset catamaran cruises and access to a golf course affiliated with the hotel.   The resort also offers a wide variety of water sports.  You can also play basketball, tennis, or billiards.

The island of Aruba is a paradise for all ages and one of the top international family vacation destinations for multigenerational travel

~Contributed by Asher from Asher & Lyric

Aruba is a gorgeous little Caribbean island stretching 19 miles long and 5 miles across making it small enough to explore the entire place in just one week! Traveling here with your extended family will certainly be an amazing experience because there is something for everyone.

This gem of an island is probably best known for its brilliant white sand beaches and perfect aqua water. It’s the ideal place for a multigenerational family to relax and to have fun at the same time.

Popular activities include bungee jumping, ziplining, snorkeling, parasailing, paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and just floating in the warm sea letting the world slip by.

In addition to all of the above, Aruba has a lot of modern comforts with huge grocery stores and restaurants you may be familiar with (such as the Hard Rock Cafe and Benihana) along with countless other local and ethnic options.

We recommend staying at the Hyatt Regency because it sits on almost a private part of the best beach, has great food, a two-story waterslide, casino, and luxurious suites with breathtaking views.

5 Places to Travel Abroad With Your Kids This Year

London, lapland, and tanzania are on the cards in 2024..

  • Copy Link copied

TAASA Lodge offers a walking safari among several other singular experiences.

Courtesy of Go2Africa

Is it worth traveling abroad with your kids, especially with so many great options in the United States? Short answer: yes. That’s especially true if you consider one of these family-friendly destinations our writers have visited in recent months. They’ve been roaming with their children in the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania, Greece, and Swedish Lapland and have unearthed some great spots for the whole fam for 2024. Just try not to think about the flight there (and especially the flight home) . . .

Osaka, Japan

Theme parks and enticing street food are among the highlights of a visit to Osaka.

Wandering through Osaka’s neon-clad neighborhood of Shinsekai with my son—a hard-to-impress tween with a thirst for photo-worthy culinary creations—we passed takoyaki stands advertising their octopus-based wares with 3D tentacle-covered displays and a conveyor belt sushi joint adorned with an enormous rotating nigiri platter. Ultimately, we were drawn into Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi , a restaurant boasting expansive pools of fish that you can catch with provided bait and rods. Here, they’ll cook and serve whatever you reel in—which, in our case, was a beast large enough to feed a family twice our size.

Memory-making experiences like this are only the beginning here, where maximalist signage beckons hungry travelers at every turn. And despite rising food costs across the globe, affordable eats are still easy to find in Osaka, making it an enticing choice for anyone looking to test their taste buds without breaking the bank. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to love in this dynamic destination, and fun-loving families will find a variety of singular eateries. Dine alongside Pikachu at the popular Pokemon Café or enjoy impossibly cute Mario-inspired meals at Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan , which will soon offer even more options in its new Donkey Kong–themed land , slated to open in 2024.

“I spy” gets a whole lot more interesting when there are leopards, hippos, and warthogs to peep.

Taking a toddler on safari is not for the faint of heart; I knew if I was gonna do it, I needed serious help. Enter Go2Africa , a seasoned tour operator staffed by specialists who’ve traveled extensively with small children throughout East and Southern Africa. These experts knew exactly which camps were the family-friendliest and how to safely travel between them. They arranged private safari drives for us in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site with Africa’s densest population of large animals, and a quiet corner of Serengeti National Park. Over multiple game drives in the two regions, we spotted lions, leopards, hippos, ostriches, flamingos, warthogs, and roughly a gazillion wildebeest, but it was a dazzle of zebras lingering within arm’s reach of our 4x4 that really had my son clapping up a storm.

Check out TAASA Lodge , a boutique bush camp in a 15,000-acre concession north of the Serengeti, and Gibb’s Farm , an 80-acre organic farm and coffee plantation less than an hour from Ngorongoro Crater. Both properties hire guides, trackers, and staff who truly love children, as opposed to merely tolerate them. Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni, close to Athens, Greece, during sunset time

Ancient history comes alive in Athens.

While history and ancient ruins may seem boring for little ones at first, Athens is actually an entertaining and educational family destination. Before you even leave, get your kids into Greek mythology and history—there’s the graphic novel series Olympians that reinterprets the mythologies and a funny and engaging podcast by National Geographic called Greeking Out that my eight-year-old son loves. Once you land, kids will be eager to see the sites that otherwise might look like crumbling dirt. When I visited last summer with my husband and two young kids, I booked a private tour with Be a Greek specifically meant for families. Our guide kept both of my children (and my husband and I) engaged with a scavenger hunt, trivia, games, and dynamic storytelling as we traipsed around the city, ticking off sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Syntagma Square to see the changing of the presidential guard.

Visiting the Acropolis is a bit more challenging, so be sure to go in early morning or evening when it’s cooler and less crowded, and leave the stroller behind (way too many steps!). Kids will also enjoy the Acropolis Museum (request a “family backpack” for educational resources, puzzles, and more); riding the bright red Athens Happy Train ; going up Mount Lycabettus via cable car; and strolling around the picturesque Plaka neighborhood. When you need to escape the heat, head outside the city center to the Athens Riviera for some time at Astir Beach or to the still-in-progress Ellinikon , which already features an incredible playground and park, with more to come.

To be in the center, stay at the new boutique Apollo Palm Hotel , which offers triple rooms perfect for a family of three (or four if one child is in a crib, which can be provided) while still boasting a chic design, gorgeous rooftop bar, and delicious breakfast buffet. For a resort experience, complete with a kids club, beach, and pool, the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has spacious rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff who clearly love children.— Devorah Lev-Tov

The Jokkmokk market has been around for hundreds of years.

Swedish Lapland

My kids were just toddlers when we visited Swedish Lapland’s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, where I pushed them in strollers as they teetered across packed-snow floors in rooms carved out from river ice by artists from around the world. (We sanely slept in the warm accommodations on site.)

On a visit this past winter on my own, I found several other reasons to plot a trip back soon with my now-older crew. The best winter adventures in this part of Sweden come with experiential elements that go beyond chasing the northern lights. At Arctic Bath in the small hamlet of Harads, I watched a British family with elementary school–age kids brave cold plunges together following a sauna session, stepping down a metal ladder straight into the frozen Lule River and whooping it up before beelining it for the outdoor hot tubs.

Nearby, the whimsical variety of cabins on stilts at Treehotel —including one shaped like a bird’s nest and another like a UFO—were pure fantastical fun, with ice fishing and snowshoeing among the activities. Sapmi Nature Camp offers three-night packages to stay with Sámi hosts in private lavvu tents on the family’s grazing lands for reindeer while learning about their modern way of life. And if you’re here in early February, the excitement of the annual Jokkmokk Winter Market draws hundreds of Indigenous people from all over the Sápmi region of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for an outdoor festival with live music, shopping for silverwork and traditional clothing, and many more activities.

All of the aforementioned stays are a treat worth planning a trip around. But I’m dreaming of a multi-generational winter adventure at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge , where you can arrive via dogsled from nearby Jukkasjärvi. Families stay in a luxurious four-bedroom cabin with its own sauna and outdoor hot tub overlooking Lake Väkkärä. (Smaller cabins can accommodate more people right nearby.) The lodge’s wilderness guides lead all manner of excursions—including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.— Terry Ward

London, U.K.

Buildings in London, UK

With musicals, green spaces, and seemingly endless restaurants, no two days in London are the same.

Courtesy of One Aldwych

From a wickedly funny Yeoman Warder guide at the Tower to a bike tour with London Bicycle and a visit to the Harry Potter studios (where all eight movies were filmed), my family’s weeklong trip across the pond proved to be equal parts educational and fun. We also adored the Matilda musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, in the West End, with all four of us singing along to its catchy tunes as we left the theater. The city’s many green spaces (Hyde Park; Kensington Gardens, with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground; Battersea Park) also allow ample opportunity for little legs to stretch, run, and stop to smell the roses. With a food scene that’s the stuff of legend, eating at Indian street food chain Dishoom and plant-based Mallow in Borough Market were also musts and didn’t disappoint.

London has many great hotels . I liked the elegant 101-room One Aldwych in the heart of Covent Garden, within blocks of theaters, restaurants, and museums, such as the fantastic London Transport Museum (where kids can see double-decker buses and grown-ups can marvel at the history of the Tube). Along with spacious suites, thoughtful touches like the daily replenished complimentary mini-bar (with biscuits and chips to keep little ones happy) and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” themed afternoon tea make the hotel truly perfect for families.— Tanvi Chheda
