Theater Review: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR (New Cast for 2022-2023 Tour)
by Maddalena Beltrami on December 31, 2022
in Theater-Los Angeles , Tours
I still have the soundtrack album that I bought when I was 14. I saw the movie when I was 16. I saw the Broadway Revival in my late teens. Today, just over fifty years after Jesus Christ Superstar premiered on Broadway, I had the pure pleasure of seeing it again at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. It’s a mash-up of rock concert stadium staging, lead actors holding microphones, music video, and Broadway-style production values and voices. With Shawn Gough ’s astoundingly tight music direction, Drew McOnie ’s hot-blooded aerobic choreography, Lee Curran ’s magical dramatic lighting, Tom Scutt ’s modern set and costumes, and a beautiful blend of vocals by an immense ensemble, this Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre 2016 production — updated for a 21st-century audience — is the closest thing you’ll get to heaven. It’s a fantastic production that mostly gets it right given the uneven casting.
There are 80+ recordings of JC Superstar from over a dozen countries, not one of which in totality tops the original 1970 Concept Album. This North American tour, which runs well into 2023, returns to that raw street-wise power, and elucidates the timelessness of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score, still his best. Never intended to be an accurate portrait of Christ’s passion, the story is lyricist Tim Rice’s idea of what Judas’s thoughts and motivations may have been, not a Biblical portrayal at all.
Interestingly enough, as much as I loved it, the three leads are somewhat disappointing — if, that is, you are expecting a blend of rock star vocals and great acting. It may be the fault of Timothy Sheader’s direction, which gives Jesus, Mary, and Judas scant sense of backstory and relationship, of which there is precious little to begin with. The leads play second fiddle to the melee and get somewhat lost. Maybe Sheader — who wisely dropped the intermission — thought any of that would get in the way of his hurtling high-voltage trajectory. Thus, Jack Hopewell ’s Jesus — complete with man bun — simply isn’t asked to blow you away like Ted Neeley or Steve Balsamo did. His tenor is lovely and lyrical, and his expressiveness and unique vocal timbre are awesome, even as he is better suited for pop. Maybe his interpretation is supposed to be less threatening to the current mood than a tall Jesus with long locks that rocks his torment. And Faith Jones as Mary was all wrong for the part in stature and looks and definitely in voice. — a beautiful lush high range is needed for her songs.
Still, Elvie Ellis plays the betrayer with a perfect blend of Broadway chops and show biz savvy, even as he lacks distinction. Beeks is particularly dramatic in “Damned for All Time” (when accepting his cash for ratting on Jesus to Caiaphas) and in “Judas’s Death” when his guilt and grief ultimately consume his life (with the help of a noose, here a dangling orange mic cord). When he comes back from the dead, there’s enough super-rockin’ dynamism — and seriously tight back-up Soul Girls L’Oréal Roaché , Savannah Fisher , Lydia Eku — to make you get a ticket to come back (there are many cities for this tour, but runs are painfully short, most a week, so act fast).
It’s the smaller roles that blew me away, and I could hear every lyric from Isaac Ryckeghem , who is not just slimy as Caiaphas, the High Priest of Israel, but he snatches those low bass notes and spears them through the back of your head. Kodiak Thompson turns the manipulative, bullying priest Annas into a Mordred-like villain, and Nicholas Hambruch is thrilling as Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea.
Mr. Scutt’s set design has a runway-like crucifix, especially effective when Caiaphas and his cronies crack down on Christ, and the orchestra is on levels behind the playing area. The main themes here — power struggles, control, greed — are remarkably clear, visceral and palpable. There is the 21st-century nail gun used instead of a hammer for the cross scene, and, as if to thrust us into the modern age’s divide between the haves and have-nots, Mr. Sheader has his players hurl sparkling gold dust at Jesus to represent each lash he receives. It’s a coup de théâtre, one of many in this most admirable revival.

Saw it in Denver January 2024. I kept expecting the set to surprise me. But it was one of those raw sets where nothing moves, which I always find disappointing in a professional show. It looked good, but man I would have been thrilled if that big cross that they used as a stage rose up at the end. Nothing. I didn’t feel like there were too many standout performances and the choreography felt so robotic. I think all the singers holding microphones was weird and added to the music video vibe which I can see them going for, but it wasn’t working for us. Pilate, Caiaphas, and Judas were very good. I had never seen it live before, and didn’t really understand the point of that one dancer who stood out from everyone else and kind of thrusted her arms dramatically at everyone who was singing. What did she represent? I loved the silver-stained-hands idea for Judas. Mary didn’t have the passion I expected. I’m glad I saw it, but it didn’t wow me. Maybe they need to go back to its hippie/disco roots with the next revamp.

About jesus christ superstar on broadway, video & photos.
What Is the story of Jesus Christ Superstar ? Jesus Christ Superstar will be familiar, in basic fact, to anyone with knowledge of western religion. Borrowing from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the musical tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus Christ’s life. As the show opens, apostle Judas Iscariot is growing concerned that Jesus’ followers will be perceived as a threat to the occupying Roman Empire. Indeed, priests Caiaphas, Annas and more gather and agree that Jesus and his movement must be crushed. An exalted Jesus arrives in Jerusalem only to find the temple filled with unsavory merchants and money lenders. Overrun by a flood of people needing his help, he tells them to heal themselves, and his confidante Mary Magdalene has to calm him down. Judas, fearing the movement is getting out of Jesus’ control, goes to the Romans and tells them Jesus will be in the Garden of Gethsemane the following night. He receives 30 pieces of silver as payment. At the Garden, Judas arrives with Roman soldiers and identifies Jesus by kissing him on the cheek. Jesus is arrested and sent to Caiaphas, then Pontius Pilate and finally King Herod, who condemns his to death on the cross.
"The standout performance comes from Josh Young as a vocally lustrous and charismatic Judas Iscariot, well known for betraying his onetime mentor with a fatal kiss." The New York Times Charles Isherwood

Shea’s Performing Arts Center (Shea's PAC) is a campus of three theaters in downtown Buffalo comprised of Shea’s Smith Theatre, Shea’s 710 Theatre, and the historic crown jewel, Shea’s Buffalo Theatre. These venues boast varying styles of performing arts, but all are sure to please the audiences that attend. From touring Broadway to International collaborations and local rentals, Shea's PAC helps enrich the Buffalo Theatre District and supports Main Street's downtown business renaissance.
Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, the historic crown jewel of Shea's PAC, opened in 1926 under the moniker of “The Wonder Theatre”. Originally serving as a movie house under Paramount Pictures with “an acre of seats”, it would later stage vaudeville shows and play host to the likes of the Marx Brothers, Frank Sinatra, George Burns, Bob Hope and more.
Once Laube’s Old Spain, now a 237 seat “black box” theatre, Shea’s Smith Theatre has played host to Off-Broadway productions, comedy, and collaborative productions with local theatre companies since 2000. Somewhat of a chameleon space, it also offers ample room for events and special occasions with the adjoining Shea's Bistro & Bar.
Shea’s 710 Theatre is the latest space to be added to the Shea's PAC campus. Housing 625 seats and offering Broadway productions and plays produced by local and international theatre companies, it is considered a “thrust stage”, where the stage projects into the auditorium and audiences can sit on three sides.

What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice for the professional stage, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has wowed audiences for more than 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, SUPERSTAR follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers, and the Roman Empire.

Jesus Christ Superstar review: Resurrection of classic musical is incredible at Hall for Cornwall
T here's no denying the evergreen power of many of the songs in Jesus Christ Superstar, but so many productions hark back to its early '70s heyday that it can often feel quaint and slightly queasily "rock opera". That's what I was expecting with this revival of Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's 2016 production, but hosanna! it's been resurrected brilliantly for the 21st century.
This is a production which drags Jesus Christ and his followers, and oppressors, into a modern setting without the awkward element updated shows often have. So the long-haired, benign sex god that Jesus is often portrayed as in the Tim Rice / Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is now an angsty, short-haired guitarist, who looks like he's missed a turning into the X Factor finals.
Pontius Pilate is a leather clad alt-rock star whose Pilate's Dream is more akin to confessional contemporary singers like John Grant than Paul Nicholas knocking them dead in the West End, while the robes of yore are replaced by baggy-crotched sweatpants. It's stark, like its oppressive stage set, and all the more affecting for it.

It's easy to forget Jesus Christ Superstar started as an album, which topped the American charts, well before it was turned into a stage show. This version uses that as its basis, so the cast are more like chart stars playing to an adoring - and critical - audience. Musical apparatus, such as mics, stands and amps are cleverly used throughout as props, while the demise of the Son of God could easily be read as some pop star getting the cancel culture treatment on X/ Twitter (but with a slightly worse outcome, I grant you).
This is a big production - a live band (there are some wonderful guitar freakouts) hides in the shadows above the cast, which features a large ensemble of dancers/singers as well as the main players. I have to say the leads are incredible - just come for the vocal performances if nothing else.
Ian McIntosh is sensitive boy band Jesus, but with a voice you'd never hear in 5ive. Gethsemane - a song I'd refer haters of musicals to as a reason to love them - is always a high point, but Ian's version was truly incredible; emotive without being overwrought, and those high notes!

The character of Judas is the centre of the show - the last days of Jesus are seen through his eyes following Judas' betrayal. Shem Omari James is a star we haven't heard of yet - his vocals run the gamut from jazzy and soulful to wired and almost heavy metal. He brings the show to life from the off with Heaven On Their Minds while his reprisal of I Don't Know How To Love Him is as mesmerising and brittle as prime Jeff Buckley.
The latter song, always a hushed highlight, is sung beautifully by Hannah Richardson as Mary Magdalene, whose Could We Just Start Again, Please? is also an arresting moment. Ryan O'Donnell makes a great Pilate while Timo Tatzber's few minutes on stage during Herod's Song are unforgettable - high camp at its best, and you'll still be feeling Jad (Caiaphas) Habchi's sonorous bass in your stomach for days to come.
The final scene (spoiler alert: you realise Jesus gets crucified, right?) is done particularly well. It will stun you like the rest of the show. Just see it.
Jesus Christ Superstar runs until Saturday, May 4 at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro . See the website for tickets.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Comes To Australia In November 2024
The musical will open in November 2024 at Sydney's Capitol Theatre, where the original Australian production began in 1972, ahead of a national tour.
Following huge acclaim and sold-out seasons in London as well as an extensive tour of North America, the Olivier Award-winning reimagined production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber 's celebrated musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR will arrive in Australia later this year.
Produced by John Frost and David Ian for Crossroads Live, in association with Work Light Productions, this celebrated rock musical will open in November 2024 at Sydney's Capitol Theatre, where the original Australian production began in 1972, ahead of a national tour. Waitlist now at www.jesuschristsuperstarmusical.com.au to be first in line to buy tickets. Auditions for the cast will begin shortly.
Featuring lyrics and music by Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, this production was reimagined by London's Regent's Park Open Air Theatre where it originated and is helmed by director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie . Completing the creative team is design by Tom Scutt , lighting design by Lee Curran , sound design by Nick Lidster and music supervision by Tom Deering .
Producer John Frost said: “I am thrilled to be bringing this award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber 's much loved musical JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to Australia this year. Australia has deep affection for this show, from the original concept album which was played in every household, to the original production starring Trevor White and Jon English , through to the sold out-arena performances starring John Farnham as Jesus.
“Regent's Park Open Air Theatre has created a fresh and bold new version of a beloved classic which will enthrall both longtime fans of the show and delight those seeing it for the very first time.”
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for decades, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR's iconic 1970s rock score was originally released as a concept album and opened on Broadway in 1971.
