'The Afterparty' musical episode just gave us 2022's first TV banger

'The Afterparty' musical episode just gave us 2022's first TV banger

When I think of Hamilton , I think of Ben Schwartz.

The comedy actor has never been in Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, but during its Broadway heyday — when Miranda was still in the cast — Schwartz appeared on an episode of Comedy Bang Bang! and could not. Stop. Singing.

Having not seen Hamilton and consistently failing to procure tickets via purchase or lottery, I'll admit that I did not care for this bit. But I now realize it was all part of a divine plan which came together with Friday's debut of The Afterparty on Apple TV+ .

Episode 3 focuses on Yasper (Schwartz) telling his version of the night the way he experienced it: As a triumphant musical. His first song, "Two Shots," is a hip hop party anthem that unleashes all the joy and energy Schwartz teased in Comedy Bang Bang , and it's delightful:

Jon Lajoie wrote the song, as well as "Yeah Sure Whatever" and "Three Dots" later in the episode, but "Two Shots" is our introduction to Yasper's mind movie and it sets a fantastic bar. Schwartz and Sam Richardson as Aniq are a comedy dream team which might be The Afterparty 's greatest gift, and to see them singing and dancing in a high school gym just repackages that perfect pairing.

The infectious beat and bass riff fall squarely into Yasper's "How great is this party?" genre of music, with everyone in the gym joining in to celebrate a second shot. "Two Shots" is sinfully catchy, its title a nod to Hamilton 's "My Shot," and Eminem's "Lose Yourself," which comes through in Lajoie's music and Schwartz's performance. Both songs emphasize the importance of one shot (one opportunity) for a person to change their life forever, but Yasper knows it's not that simple.

But what happens if you choked and you didn't catch your break? If you fail do you bail with your tail between your legs? What about those of us who missed our shot, didn't rise to the top never became the cream and we just remained the crop?

The concept is enticing, especially for a high school reunion; who doesn't want to believe in second chances when the first round didn't go well? Second chances are a familiar concept, but "Two Shots" packages the idea in a completely new way, starting with the one-shot philosophy and leading us elegantly toward two. With references to Back to the Future , hypothetical scenarios ("If you fail the bar exam, become a paralegal"), and connections to the show itself and Aniq and Zoe's love story, "Two Shots" is a powerful bop and an emotional journey.

By the time Yasper and Aniq sing about a little-known band called the Quarrymen that went on to become the Beatles, you're all in.

The Afterparty is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Jon Lajoie

Highest Rated: 40% Moments of Clarity (2015)

Lowest Rated: 18% Let's Be Cops (2014)

Birthday: Aug 21, 1980

Birthplace: Longueuil, Québec, Canada

Born August 21, 1980 in Montreal, Canada, Jon Lajoie was the third of nine children. He graduated from Dawson's College in Montreal in 2001. Lajoie became popular online before he graduated to movies and TV shows. A stand-up comic, he began putting short films and videos for his comic songs on YouTube in 2007 and quickly gained a substantial online following for tracks like "Everyday Normal Guy" (over 30 million views); the videos on his YouTube channel quickly gained over 100 million views. In 2009 Lajoie released You Want Some of This, a studio album of his YouTube songs. That same year, Lajoie began his first long term role, as Taco Macarthur, one of the fantasy football league competitors in the comedy "The League" (FX, 2009-15). Much like Lajoie's internet persona, Taco was a lazy, not too bright, misogynistic singer-songwriter. He continued to exploit his online persona, making YouTube videos, and in 2010, released another studio album called I Kill People. Lajoie also had a small role in the big screen comedy "Let's Be Cops" (2014).

Unique Musical Take on Hulk Hogan’s Famous ‘WrestleMania III’ Moment Goes Viral

  • Author: Justin Barrasso

Prepare yourself to go back in time.

The newest song from actor-comedian-musician Jon Lajoie captures the anticipation, excitement and beauty of Hulk Hogan’s famous bodyslam of Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III , reintroducing people to a vivid memory from childhood.

The song, entitled “Hulk Hogan Slammed Andre the Giant,” overflows with creativity and a sense of importance. The match is re-created with old-school LJN wrestling figures, which sounds lighthearted but serves to add a nostalgic touch to a superb music video.

“I’d always joke that it wasn’t possible, even with drugs and alcohol and magic mushrooms, to feel the exhilaration I did at my grandmother’s watching Hulk Hogan slam Andre the Giant,” says Lajoie. “It’s an iconic moment. As a child, I was so emotionally available. That idea is the heart of it. I miss having access to that kind of joy.”

Lajoie—who played Taco on the FX sitcom The League —is known for his humor but is a multifaceted performer. He has serious layers to his craft, which is especially visible here as a songwriter-composer. This song is part of his upcoming Everyone Is Dead Except Us album under his “Wolfie’s Just Fine” moniker. Wrestling fans have found the “Hulk Hogan Slammed Andre the Giant” song to be nostalgic, harkening memories from an earlier time in life when the axis of their world seemingly revolved around family, school days and trips to visit grandparents.

“It’s one of the most joyous moments of my life, and it’s totally serious,” says Lajoie. “But it’s also completely not. So the goal was to capture that.”

When Lajoie and his brothers visited their grandmother, they were treated to the World Wrestling Federation on cable television. That was a legitimate game-changer, much different from WWF’s Maple Leaf Wrestling he watched at home in Montreal.

“Maple Leaf Wrestling was on Saturdays at noon, and that’s all we had,” says Lajoie, 42. “Once in a while, we’d get a big match, like the Rougeaus against Demolition, and we’d lose our minds. So going to grandma’s was special for a lot of reasons. We got to stay up late, we’d get to watch wrestling. When Hulk Hogan wrestled Andre the Giant, at least in our eyes, it was the two best in the world.”

The song explores the full range of human emotions. It is a chance to smile, laugh, reminisce and, perhaps, even become a little misty-eyed. Lajoie relived his childhood in this video, showcasing his vast array of talent as an artist.

The album unexpectedly began after the death of his father in early 2022, starting with the idea of rerecording a song he had recorded for his father 20 years before. But he kept writing songs, and the album came alive.

“Initially, this song was a collection of memories,” says Lajoie, who started writing the lyrics in early 2022. “No matter what I thought, I kept going back to Hulk Hogan slamming Andre the Giant. I started with the guitar in hand, found the chorus early on, then it was all about how to best get into the story. I questioned the ‘We went over to grandma’s house because we don’t have cable TV’ lyric. My wife told me to keep it, and she was right—it’s all true.

“It felt natural to retell this story, but it’s so specific and I never had an expectation to connect with so many people. They say to write what you know, and I don’t want to take myself too seriously even when I’m writing personal music. That’s how we got here.”

Lajoie surrounded himself with people that further elevated his work, particularly with producer Jordan Lehning and codirector Justin Slade McClain.

“The producer I worked with on this record is Jordan Lehning, and his string arrangements are incredible,” says Lajoie. “That production is a big part of why it’s emotional as it is. I had the idea for the video, and my friend—Justin Slade McClain—was the director of photography and production designer, and he codirected it with me. He was a big piece of this.”

Children holding wrestling action figures

Lajoie and his brother, Jason, were infatuated with wrestling figures as children.

A unique element of the video is the inclusion of the LJN wrestling figures. The oversized toys remain a hot commodity decades after the line was discontinued, and Lajoie relished the chance to finally complete his collection.

“It’s been such pure joy to collect vintage toys for the video—it’s been a healthy spoonful of the type of joy I don’t have access to anymore,” says Lajoie, who started collecting LJNs last December—mostly through his brother but also with collector groups on Facebook—and he found a company on eBay that refurbished old LJN rings. “The LJN figurines, to this day, that’s what a toy is to me. We had some of them as kids, but not every single one. My brother remained a hardcore wrestling fan. Now he has pretty much the whole collection, and he generously lent me most of them. And it’s crazy. I can’t remember what happened last week, but when I held the Honky Tonk Man LJN, I remembered that my cousin David had him. I remember wanting Demolition Ax. How the hell do we remember this stuff?

“I only had the Andre figure with the long hair. I considered using that one in the video for accuracy because the black-strap one didn’t come out until after 1987, but I couldn’t. The iconic visual is Hogan and Andre in the single strap. But the ones who could point out those inconsistencies can take solace in knowing this video was made for them.”

Fortunately, no LJNs were harmed in the filming of this video. Lajoie ensured the collectibles were returned to his brother in pristine condition, though there were a few close calls during the scene where Hogan slams Andre.

“My mom and my nephews are in the video,” says Lajoie. “My mom is playing her mom as the grandma, and my nephews are playing me and my brother Jason—my other brother, Jeremy, and his wife, who are the parents of my nephews, were also there. That was a really beautiful layer to all of this. When my nephew was slamming Andre, which he was doing perfectly, I knew my brother was wondering, What is he doing to my Andre? That was super rare and expensive, and so were the Hart Foundation [figures]. As a proud Canadian, we needed them.”

Lajoie’s lyrics are genuine and real, embracing the wrestling community but refusing to have fun at its expense. There is a reverence, respect and gratitude layered into the video about the people who populated his childhood. The final image, with all the wrestlers standing proudly in the ring, is a familiar sight to those who grew up as wrestling fans, one that pulls at the heartstrings of grown men and women.

“We had to treat this with seriousness and utmost sincerity,” says Lajoie. “It was the same challenge in the video with the toys reenacting the match. The North Star was trying to make grown men cry.”

LaJoie Wins Martinsville Battle But McKennedy Wins NASCAR Modified Tour War

For a moment in Thursday’s Virginia is for Racing Lovers 200 at Martinsville Speedway, Jon McKennedy’s season flashed before his eyes.

While battling for the lead with less than 10 laps remaining, McKennedy was turned in front of the field on the backstretch before sustaining a hard hit in the right-front suspension by Kyle Bonsignore, relegating him all the way to the rear of the lead-lap cars and erasing his comfortable points lead — and ultimately handing the race win to NASCAR Cup Series driver Corey LaJoie.

2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Martinsville Speedway

A year of hard work and sacrifice for McKennedy ended up being salvaged with a 12th-place finish, which earned him his first career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship in just his second season of full-time competition.

The sting of missing out on a grandfather clock will stick with McKennedy for a while, but he was more than ecstatic to celebrate a Whelen Modified Tour championship in Martinsville’s frontstretch Victory Lane.

“This is icing on the cake,” McKennedy said. “I’ve won a lot of championships in the New England area in other forms of Modified racing and even in Supermodified racing, so to win this NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour deal is such an amazing accomplishment for all my guys and my car owner. This is an extremely tough division, but I’m satisfied to be a champion in it.”

The odds were initially against McKennedy winning the title when the 2022 season began.

Having only one career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory to his name at Myrtle Beach Speedway, McKennedy also elected to join a brand-new operation led by Tim Lepine after spending the past four years with Tommy Baldwin Racing.

McKennedy and Lepine immediately found consistency in their first year together. After opening 2022 with a fourth-place run at New Smyrna, the duo recorded 13 top-10 finishes and claimed a victory at Claremont Speedway on July 29.

Another victory appeared to be secured for McKennedy and Lepine on Thursday evening after they elected to take tires and fuel during the first half of the race, which eventually cycled McKennedy to the front of the pack with Jimmy Blewett in tow.

Hard racing on the penultimate restart of the night resulted in both McKennedy and Blewett being eliminated from contention, with LaJoie — who led throughout much of the race — rallying for the victory.

“I thought we were in a great position to win,” McKennedy said. “Jimmy [Blewett] and I came off Turn 2 side-by-side on that last restart, but I felt a big bump from behind on the backstretch. Then we all wrecked. It’s definitely unfortunate because we came so close to winning the biggest race of the year, but we still came through to win the championship.”

The last thing LaJoie wanted was to interfere with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title fight, but knew he needed to take advantage of the fresh rubber on his car with only a handful of laps at his disposal.

LaJoie chalked up the accident between him, McKennedy and Blewett as three drivers doing everything possible to bring home a grandfather clock.

“I wanted the top to roll and Jimmy got a great launch in front of me,” LaJoie said. “We came off Turn 2 and (McKennedy’s) right front was splitting my car and Jimmy’s car. (McKennedy’s) right rear bumper hooked my tire and turned me into him. I don’t feel like I was a culprit, but it was just hard racing, and we came out lucky on the other side.”

Thursday’s triumph was not the first time LaJoie had won a NASCAR-sanctioned Modified event. He previously took home a checkered flag in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour when the series raced on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s frontstretch oval back in 2010.

Being able to claim a grandfather clock is an achievement LaJoie plans to cherish for the rest of his career. He expressed his gratitude toward everyone that made his No. 53 Curb Records Modified fast from the opening practice session.

“This car was dialed in,” LaJoie said. “Bono [Manion], Elizabeth [Manion] and Rob Fuller put this thing together at the last minute, but this was a full-on effort with a bunch of friends, and we succeeded [on Thursday]. We came here for a clock, and we got one.”

LaJoie expressed relief that the final caution of the night ultimately did not cost a championship for McKennedy, who expressed some frustration over having a potential victory taken away from him in the final laps.

Everything had to go perfect for McKennedy to fend off Ron Silk, Justin Bonsignore and Eric Goodale for the title, all of whom were separated by just 13 points entering Martinsville. With Silk and Bonsignore both encountering issues of their own, it was a late battle between McKennedy and Goodale to decide the championship.

McKennedy considers it a blessing that everything still worked out in his favor despite the late crash that could have easily ended his title hopes just a few laps from the finish.

“A ton of work went into this race the last few weeks,” McKennedy said. “Everyone gave it 100 percent and that’s all you can ask for. We were lucky in a few ways because we were wrecked on the backstretch and our championship was over. I still can’t believe we got wrecked in the end and that took some wind out of the sails, but at the end of the day, we are champions.”

McKennedy never once viewed himself as an underdog for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship and takes pride over now being associated with many legends in the discipline like Bonsignore, Silk, Richie Evans, Mike Stefanik, Ted Christopher and more.

A replay of the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 200 at Martinsville Speedway will be shown on the USA Network on Friday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. ET.

Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton eligible for 2025 Ryder Cup despite joining LIV Golf

ROME, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 29: Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton of Team Europe celebrate on the 12th hole during the Friday morning foursomes matches of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf Club on September 29, 2023 in Rome, Italy. (Photo by Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images)

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, both members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team at Marco Simone last fall, are still eligible for the 2025 team at Bethpage Black under the DP World Tour’s current guidelines. The pair left for LIV Golf earlier this year but have a pathway to be on the team, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings told reporters .

The newly appointed Kinnings dispelled previous concerns — which were even voiced by Rory McIlroy — that Rahm and Hatton’s defections to LIV Golf might prevent them from representing Europe in Long Island, N.Y., next year.

Rahm and Hatton must simply remain DP World Tour members to be eligible for the Ryder Cup, Kinnings said. That means the pair will incur fines every time they tee it up in a LIV Golf event, but if they pay those penalties and play in the minimum number of DP World Tour events each calendar year to retain membership (four), they can still be on the team.

“I think there’s been a slight misconception because the reality is, under the current rules, if a player is European, and is a member of the DP World Tour, and abides by the rules as they currently are — so if you don’t get a release and you accept the sanctions — there is no reason why players who’ve taken LIV membership and maintained DP World Tour membership, could not a) qualify and or b) be available to for selection,” the CEO said.

The change from 2022

Rahm and Hatton’s eligibility situation is in direct contrast with that of several other LIV players who chose to withdraw their DP World Tour membership last year. Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia resigned from the tour last year, effectively ending their Ryder Cup careers to avoid paying large fines. Meanwhile, Rahm and Hatton (and other European LIV members such as Adrian Meronk and Thomas Pieters) have kept their memberships.

According to The Telegraph’s James Corrigan , Kinnings consulted the DP World Tour rules department to ensure that Rahm and Hatton could play in the four required events while also serving their LIV-related penalties. Since LIV Golf plays 14 events each year, Rahm and Hatton need to serve a 14-week ban to carry out their suspensions. But instead of serving those suspensions at the end of the LIV season, Rahm and Hatton can serve them whenever LIV has an off-week but the DP World Tour does not, as revealed by Kinnings. As long as both players pay the appropriate fines — which will likely total more than $1 million each — they will be eligible to either qualify for or be selected for the European Ryder Cup team.

“It’s not a loophole,” Kinnings said. “Rules are for all of the membership and it’s important for people to know how those apply and they apply to every member.”

What are the future implications?

Not every player will want to battle constant fines and suspensions to maintain their Ryder Cup eligibility, but the news reveals that joining LIV Golf doesn’t necessarily prevent pros from teeing it up in the biennial match-play event on either side — LIV’s Brooks Koepka made the United States team last year.

Although the Ryder Cup requirements were not changed, Kinnings was willing to read between the lines of the DP World Tour rules to ensure Rahm and Hatton have a pathway to Luke Donald’s 2025 team. That effort is noteworthy as the professional game continues to operate in a fractured system, and the road to unification remains murky.

Rahm and Hatton were critical parts of Donald’s plan at Marco Simone — Hatton was 3-0-1 and Rahm 2-0-2. The duo played together in foursomes twice, winning the first match of the Ryder Cup and halving their Saturday game.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
