Journey 2: the mysterious island cast & character guide - where you've seen the actors before.

With A-list stars like The Rock and Vanessa Hudgens at the helm, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has a stacked cast of Hollywood heavyweights.

  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island brings a fresh perspective with a shift in narrative focus, combining mystery, fantasy, and action.
  • Dwayne Johnson's charismatic performance as Hank Parsons adds humor, physical prowess, and emotional depth to the film.
  • Vanessa Hudgens' portrayal of Kailani is full of confidence and charm.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the second installment in the Journey film franchise, which features an all-star cast including Vanessa Hudgens. While 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth was inspired by Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel of the same name, Journey 2 embraces a different Verne novel, The Mysterious Island , as its primary source material and focuses more on comedy. Unlike the first film's underground exploration theme, Journey 2 expands its horizon to an enigmatic island, introducing new characters and challenges. It makes for an exciting standalone adventure while maintaining a connection to the franchise's adventurous spirit.

This shift in narrative focus brings a fresh perspective to the franchise, offering a new adventure that combines elements of mystery, fantasy, and action. The sequel stands out for its unique blend of mythical creatures, hidden treasures, and uncharted territories, providing a visually stunning and thrilling experience. However, 2012's Journey 2: The Mysterious Island not only explores new thematic terrain but also features a star-studded cast that adds depth and charisma to its fantastical world. The film's ensemble comprises both seasoned actors and rising stars, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in an interesting transitional phase of his career.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s Franchises Ranked Worst To Best

Dwayne johnson as hank parsons.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays Hank Parsons in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Hank is Sean Anderson's stepfather, a former Navy codebreaker who reluctantly joins the adventure. Typical of other Johnson performances, his character brings a blend of humor, physical prowess, and emotional depth to the film. Hank's relationship with Sean evolves throughout the movie, adding a layer of family dynamics to the adventurous storyline. His expertise in navigation and survival skills proves crucial in the challenges they face on the island.

Dwayne Johnson's career transition from a professional wrestler to a Hollywood superstar is legendary. Known for his charismatic screen presence and action-packed performances, Johnson has starred in major blockbusters like the Fast & Furious franchise as Luke Hobbs , San Andreas as Raymond, and Jumanji as Spencer. His roles showcase his physical strength and comedic talent, making him one of the most entertaining stars in the industry. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island marks an interesting point in Johnson's career, as it was right on the cusp of him becoming a bankable actor able who brings in billions at the box office.

Josh Hutcherson As Sean Anderson

Josh Hutcherson is the bridge between the first movie and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , as he reprises his role as Sean Anderson, the intrepid young explorer from the 2008 film. Sean embarks on another extraordinary adventure, this time to find his missing grandfather on the mythical Mysterious Island. His character's bravery, intelligence, and curiosity drive the plot, as he navigates through the island's wonders and dangers. Sean's development from the first film is evident, showcasing a more mature and confident explorer, yet retaining the youthful enthusiasm that defines his character.

Josh Hutcherson became a household name with his role as Peeta Mellark in the Hunger Games series , a part that catapulted him to international fame. His portrayal of the compassionate and resourceful Peeta garnered critical acclaim and a massive fan following. Before The Hunger Games , Hutcherson had already established himself as a talented young actor with roles in other adventure films, such as Jesse in Bridge to Terabithia and Walter in Zathura: A Space Adventure . In 2023, he starred in the PG-13 sleeper hit horror movie Five Nights at Freddy 's as Mike Schmidt.

Michael Caine As Alexander Anderson

Legendary actor Michael Caine plays Alexander Anderson, Sean's adventurous grandfather, in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Alexander, a Vernian (follower of Jules Verne's works), is the reason behind the expedition to the Mysterious Island. His character is eccentric, full of wisdom, and embodies the spirit of exploration. Caine's portrayal brings a sense of gravitas and charm to the film, serving as a mentor figure to the younger characters while engaging in the adventure with youthful vigor.

Michael Caine's illustrious career spans several decades, with iconic roles such as Charlie in the classic British crime caper The Italian Job , the titular character in the '60s drama Alfie , and Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. His remarkable versatility and distinctive Cockney accent have made him one of the most respected and beloved actors in cinema. Caine's ability to adapt to various genres, from drama to comedy, has earned him numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards. His latest film, 2023's The Great Escaper, marks the last film of his career after Caine announced his retirement .

Luis Guzmán As Gabato

Luis Guzmán portrays Gabato, the comical and kind-hearted helicopter pilot who helps the group reach the Mysterious Island. Typical of Guzmán's usual roles, his character adds a humorous and relatable touch to the film, often providing comic relief amidst the thrilling action. However, Gabato's concern for his daughter, Kailani, and his willingness to embark on the dangerous journey for her sake, adds emotional depth to his role.

Luis Guzmán is known for his character roles, often playing likable, down-to-earth characters in both film and television. The actor has two notable great working relationships in Hollywood. As a close friend of Adam Sandler , Guzmán has featured alongside the comedian in Anger Management, Sandy Wexler, The Do-Over , and others. The actor is also close to celebrated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson , with appearances in Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch-Drunk Love (also starring Sandler). In television, Guzmán gained acclaim for his portrayal of patriarch Gomez Addams on Wednesday .

Vanessa Hudgens As Kailani

Vanessa Hudgens plays Kailani, Gabato's determined and courageous daughter, who joins the quest to find the Mysterious Island. Her character is strong-willed, resourceful, and serves as a romantic interest for Sean. Kailani's adventurous spirit and bravery make her a key member of the expedition team, and Hudgens' performance brings a sense of determination and charm to the role. Hudgens rose to fame with her role as Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical series , a role that made her a teen idol. Since then, she has diversified her career with roles in films like Spring Breakers and Tick, Tick... Boom!

Kristin Davis As Liz Anderson-Parsons

Kristin Davis portrays Liz Anderson-Parsons, Sean's caring and concerned mother, who reluctantly allows him to search for his grandfather in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Her character, while not central to the island's adventure, plays a crucial role in the emotional backdrop of the story, representing the family ties and concerns back home.

Davis is best known for her role as Charlotte York in Sex and the City , which earned her widespread recognition. She notably returned to the role of Charlotte in the Max revival series And Just Like That.. for two seasons with And Just Like That... season 3 in development.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, and YouTube.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.

The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.

Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.

This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)

Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.

This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.

I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.

Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.

This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

25 Movies Like Jumanji You Need To Watch

Jumanji The Board Game

" Jumanji " is a family adventure movie about a board game where its hazards come to life whenever someone plays it. Starring Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and Bonnie Hunt, the classic '90s movie was a big hit that eventually spawned its own franchise. The most recent entries in the series were two Dwayne Johnson -starring sequels, 2017's "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and 2019's "Jumanji: The Next Level."

In addition, there are several other movies like "Jumanji" out there to watch. Many of these films are family-friendly fantasy adventures that transport viewers to fantastical worlds where the main heroes must defeat a great evil, or maybe just learn more about themselves while facing great odds. Here is a rundown of 25 films that are very similar to "Jumanji," featuring what they're all about and how they can bring the same level of enjoyment as the 1995 film.

Zathura: A Space Adventure

"Jumanji" was originally based on a children's book by author Chris Van Allsburg. That book was followed up by a sequel, " Zathura ," which has a similar premise to "Jumanji" but instead revolves around a space-themed board game that two bickering brothers end up playing that transports their house into an outer space filled with aliens and other dangers. The book was adapted into a 2005 film starring a young Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo, as well as  Kristen Stewart and Dax Shepard. It was directed by " The Mandalorian " creator and " Iron Man " director Jon Favreau.

While the film isn't a direct sequel to the "Jumanji" movie, "Zathura: A Space Adventure" takes the basic premise of the book and expands upon it, delivering a sci-fi spectacle perfectly suitable for younger viewers without sacrificing any action. Favreau's direction is typically great, but the performances of the young cast help elevate the material.

Ready Player One

One of the things that made the recent "Jumanji" sequels such a big hit was how they updated the source material for a modern audience. Rather than center the film around a board game, "Welcome to the Jungle" transformed Jumanji into a video game. While not exactly the same as "Welcome to the Jungle," Steven Spielberg 's "Ready Player One" also has a video game element to it. Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, this film follows a young man who sets out to win a massive prize within a virtual world called the OASIS.

While the ensemble cast is great, featuring Tye Sheridan and Ben Mendelsohn, the visuals are the true star of the film. In addition to several strong action sequences, "Ready Player One" is filled with pop culture references to classic films and video games that younger and older viewers will enjoy, especially when these references are cleverly used within the plot.

Jurassic Park

"Ready Player One" never misses a beat when it comes to reverence for famous movies. In fact, Spielberg even manages to sneak in references to his own films. These callbacks make sense considering many of Spielberg's earlier works are some of the best examples of the adventure genre, especially the iconic dinosaur flick " Jurassic Park ." Even though the film was released all the way back in 1993, our first trip to Isla Nublar still holds up to this day.

From the shot of Dr. Alan Grant witnessing the field of dinosaurs for the first time to the "must go faster" chase scene with Jeff Goldblum, "Jurassic Park" is filled with so many thrilling moments that you could make your own list simply off of the series alone. Even after several other sequels and spin-offs, including another "Jurassic World" sequel coming later in 2022, there's still nothing else quite like the original.

The Spiderwick Chronicles

A sequel to "Ready Player One" is in the works based on the sequel novel "Ready Player Two." Sadly, the same wasn't possible for 2008's " The Spiderwick Chronicles ," an adaptation of the fantasy novel series of the same name. That's a real shame, because the story of the Grace siblings battling magical creatures in the woods surrounding their new home after their family moves them to an abandoned estate is still a very good film on its own. The story will get another adaptation in the form of a Disney+ television series , but the film is still worth a look.

The visual effects that bring to life goblins and fairies, voiced by the likes of Ron Pearlman and Seth Rogen, are beautiful. But the real draw is the performance of a young Freddie Highmore, who plays the dual role of twins Jared and Simon. Whether he's playing the sweet little Simon or the much more intense Jared, Highmore is the highlight of the film.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Another children's book adaptation that failed to get a sequel was "A Series of Unfortunate Events," based on the novel series of the same name by Daniel Handler (written under the pen name Lemony Snicket, a character within the books). An adaptation of the first three books, the film saw Jim Carrey play the sinister Count Olaf as he schemes to steal the inheritance of the Baudelaire orphans. Meanwhile, the siblings set out to discover the mystery of their parents' deaths.

There are a lot of things to admire about the film, but the absurd characters and surreal story of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" are what truly make this quirky adventure worth watching. It's made even better by Jim Carrey's performance. Although a sequel to the film never happened, the series did get a full adaptation in the form of a Netflix television series, with Neil Patrick Harris taking over as Olaf.

Night at the Museum

One children's book adaptation that was very successful was the "Night at the Museum" series, and while they might not be on the same level of quality as the previously mentioned films, that doesn't make them any less fun. There are three films in the series, and each one follows Ben Stiller's Larry as he goes on various adventures with museum exhibits that come to life at night.

All of the films have their merits, but the first film truly is the easiest to recommend mostly for the absurdity of watching Larry encounter the live exhibits for the first time. Some of the highlights include the train scene featuring Jedediah, Larry's interactions with Dexter the monkey, and the late Robin Williams' portrayal of Teddy Roosevelt (the third film in the series, "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," was one of Williams' last films ).

Bridge to Terabithia

Another children's book adaptation starring a young Josh Hutcherson, "Bridge to Terabithia" is based on the novel by Katherine Paterson. This time, Hutcherson stars alongside a young AnnaSophia Robb as two neighbors who become friends after they create their own fantasy world called Terabithia together in order to escape the hardships they face in their real lives. Unlike "Zathura: A Space Adventure," which was a science fiction spectacle, "Bridge to Terabithia" is a tragic story about friendship and loss that blends fantasy elements with real-life problems.

The heavy subject matter, particularly the sad ending, offers a much different intensity than the thrills of a board game come to life. The visual effects when the kids enter the world of Terabithia are still great to look at, but the chemistry between Hutcherson's character Jess and Robb's character Leslie is what really carries the film to special heights.

When you normally think of family adventure films, director Martin Scorsese probably isn't the first name that comes to mind. After all, he is best known for his gangster dramas like "The Departed" and "Goodfellas." But in 2011, the Academy Award-winning director gave audiences one of his most underappreciated films: "Hugo." Based on the novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick, the film follows a young boy who lives in a train station and must solve the mystery of an automaton left by his late father.

Despite not making waves at the box office , "Hugo" was a massive hit with critics and won five out of its 11 Academy Award nominations. Both the visual effects and the cinematography are standouts for the film, but the story also does a great job of paying homage to classic cinema by centering much of its mystery around filmmaker George Méliès.

Where the Wild Things Are

The 2009 film "Where The Wild Things Are" has a similar history to that of "Hugo." Both are children's films made by a director, in this case Spike Jonze, who isn't well known for making films for families. Both received critical acclaim for their themes and visuals, but neither was able to make a lot of money at the box office . Adapted from the Maurice Sendak book of the same name, "Where the Wild Things Are" follows a boy named Max as he runs away from home and becomes king of an island filled with monsters.

At the time, the dark themes and designs of the monsters drew criticism for how they would be perceived by younger audiences, but looking at the film now, all of these elements make "Where the Wild Things Are" one of the most uniquely satisfying children's films to watch.

National Treasure

Before Marvel, Star Wars , and live-action remakes took over the Disney brand, and way before the buyout of 20th Century Fox, Disney's live-action films were a unique bunch. One of their most unique was "National Treasure," an action film starring Nicolas Cage as a treasure hunter who plans to steal the Declaration of Independence in order to find a fabled lost treasure that the Founding Fathers hid hundreds of years ago.

It's about as strange as it sounds, especially for a Nicolas Cage film, but both the film and Cage's commitment to its absurd premise make everything watchable. For an action movie geared towards families, there are a surprising amount of decent action scenes sprinkled throughout the film. If you're a fan of this film, then you should try the sequel, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." Even better, a Disney+ television series was announced back in 2021.

The Jungle Book (2016)

Nowadays, most of Disney's live-action films are remakes or updates of their large portfolio of animated works from the Disney Renaissance era. Many of these films are of varying quality, but one of the best remakes to come from Disney was 2016's "The Jungle Book." Another film directed by Jon Favreau, this remake retells the classic story but updates the narrative with photorealistic CGI versions of the talking animals that help guide the young boy Mowgli on his quest to defeat the fearsome tiger Shere Khan.

It's truly hard to judge which version of "The Jungle Book" is better. The original's classic animation style and songs are still great to watch today, but the remake's landmark visuals shouldn't be missed. This indecision is surely a testament to how well-made the remake really is. Mowgli's adventure is still satisfying to watch after all these years.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

One live-action franchise that came to define the Disney brand in the early 2000s was the " Pirates of the Caribbean " series. Gifting audiences with the iconic Jack Sparrow and resurrecting the pirate genre, it's easy to forget how much of a big deal the original film was when it was released back in 2003.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" not only introduces audiences to Sparrow but also to Orlando Bloom's Will Turner and Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swann as the three face off against Geoffery Rush's Barbossa and his crew of pirates, who turn into undead skeletons at night. The swashbuckling action and the traditional Disney magic are the main attraction, but people really stay to watch the three stars (and particularly Depp's Keith Richards -inspired performance). Even after so many sequels, the first entry is still the best.

Tron: Legacy

In 1982, Disney released " Tron ," a science fiction film about a programmer who is transported into a computer system and must find a way to escape. "Tron" starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner and featured revolutionary visuals for its time. It wasn't until 2010 that a sequel would finally come out. "Tron: Legacy" follows a similar premise to the original, with the son of Jeff Bridges' character getting launched into another computer program and needing to both escape and rescue his father.

Unlike most of the aforementioned films, "Tron: Legacy" wasn't very well received by critics. In fact, reactions to the sequel were about the same as its predecessor : the breathtaking visuals weren't enough to make up for the poor narrative. Despite these criticisms, "Tron: Legacy" is still worth a watch for its visuals alone, not to mention its action sequences and the amazing soundtrack by Daft Punk.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Much like their live-action fare, the animated offerings from Disney back in the early 2000s were full of films that stood out compared to Disney's present. In 2001, Disney released "Atlantis: The Lost Empire," an animated fantasy film about a group of explorers who set out to find the fabled city when a young linguist discovers a journal that could hold a map to the city itself. As eye-catching as the animate visuals are, especially when compared to other 2-D animated films released at the time, critics weren't very fond of the film back then . Audiences weren't either, as the film didn't do well at the box office .

Still, fans of classic Disney animation will find a lot to love about this film, as well as fans of fantasy adventure in general. If this film suits your fancy, then there's the direct-to-video "Atlantis: Milo's Return" to satisfy those hungry for more.

Treasure Planet

By the early 2000s, it was clear that hand-drawn animation wasn't as profitable as it once was. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" was the first film to indicate that the style was dying out for Disney, and 2002's "Treasure Planet" was another bad sign , though it was not the final nail in the coffin (the last traditionally animated feature released by Disney was 2011's "Winnie the Pooh," but there weren't many others released in between).

An adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island" story, this film adds a science fiction element to the story to freshen things up. This leads to some seriously impressive visuals for an animated film while also keeping in the spirit of the classic story. There may never be a true follow-up to "Treasure Planet," but the original film is definitely enough to satisfy both the adventure and the science fiction itch younger viewers might have.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

Waning interest in hand-drawn animation wasn't just plaguing Disney. DreamWorks animation also suffered financial losses when their traditional animated features failed to break even. One of their biggest losses , at around $125 million, came from 2003's "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas." This loose retelling of the story of Sinbad as he sets out on a quest to save his best friend and defeat an evil goddess was the last traditionally animated film that DreamWorks released (there were only three other films of that style before "Sinbad") before switching to computer animation.

"Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" does have its own issues outside of its financial problems. The story does take a while to get going, and the whitewashing of the character's Arabic roots isn't pretty. Still, there are a handful of exciting moments within the film, as well as some gorgeous animation that's worth a look.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

In 2008, another adaptation of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was released. Starring Brendan Fraser and John Hutcherson, this film — about a rescue mission that turns into an adventure deep within our planet — was notable for being a 3D adventure around the time the medium was becoming the standard for big-budget films. Four years later, the sequel "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" was released. It features the same amount of 3D spectacle but transports the adventure to a mythical island.

Fraser doesn't return for the sequel, instead being replaced by Dwayne Johnson. Like Nicholas Cage, Dwayne Johnson's action films feel like a genre of their own. The thrill of watching The Rock outrun giant CGI lizards and riding giant insects fits right into his "turn your brain off and enjoy the spectacle" brand of big-budget action movies.

The same year that Brendan Fraser went on an epic adventure in "Journey to the Center of the Earth," he was the lead in an adaptation of the fantasy novel "Inkheart." This film follows a young girl who discovers that her father can bring literary characters to life, and the two must use his ability to bring back a family member that became trapped in one of their books. Alas, "Inkheart" felt like yet another film that was supposed to be the first installment of a young-adult franchise, but just wasn't able to do it.

The film may not be a winner, especially where critics and box office receipts are concerned, but there's still plenty to admire about the movie. Fraser's portrayal of the "Silvertongue" reader Mo is great, but Andy Serkis' turn as the sinister literary character Capricorn is definitely one of the reasons to watch.

Race to Witch Mountain

One of the earliest examples of Dwayne Johnson's ability to elevate even the silliest of family action movies, as well as another relic of Disney's unique 2000s live-action offerings, is 2009's "Race to Witch Mountain." A remake of the 1975 film "Escape to Witch Mountain," this update follows a cab driver escorting two alien teenagers back to their ship while evading both the United States government and an alien assassin.

Johnson's star power helps give the film a great leading anchor, but AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig's alien siblings are the real stars of the show, delivering in every action sequence the film has. It may not be the best family action film out there —  critics certainly weren't crazy about it  — but "Race to Witch Mountain" offers just the right amount of science fiction thrills and Johnson-style charm to suit a family audience.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Disney has had a hand in adapting some of the best children's series into successful films. Back in 2005, Disney brought C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" series to the big screen with the adaptation of its most popular book "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe." The story of the Pevensie children's adventures in the magical land of Narnia, and their subsequent battle against the White Witch, are made even better by some impressive action sequences and special effects used to bring the lion Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson ) to life.

Only three of the seven books in the series became films, with 2008's "Prince Caspian" and 2010's "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" following soon after. Even if you are unfamiliar with the series, "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" is a great fantasy film both as a franchise starter and a standalone epic.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Coming out almost a decade after the last "Narnia" book was "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl, which was adapted to film twice. Both 1971's " Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory " and 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" have many good things going for them, but the first film definitely wins out based on nostalgia and Gene Wilder (Dahl apparently didn't like the film . It's unclear if he would have much liked Tim Burton's take, either, as he wasn't around to offer his opinion).

The journey into the fantastical candy factory of eccentric owner Willy Wonka with Charlie Bucket and the rest of the Golden Ticket winners is a spectacle that still holds up today. Some standout sequences include Charlie's adventures in the Bubble Room and the strange boat ride of terror, but every scene is made even better by Wilder's wry, iconic performance as Willy Wonka.

James and the Giant Peach

Another Roald Dahl book that became a beloved children's classic was "James and the Giant Peach," an equally fantastical adventure about a young boy who goes on a journey with talking bugs after a magic crystal creates a giant peach that James uses to escape his abusive aunts. What makes this film stand out compared to "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" is its use of stop-motion animation once James' adventure truly begins.

This technique helps bring James' adventure to life in beautiful and at times even unsettling ways. The battle between James and a giant flying rhinoceros and the peach trying to escape the clutches of a mechanical shark are some of the standouts. Although the animated bugs are the main stars of the film, credit should be given to James' aunts, Sponge and Spiker, for being a pair of truly terrifying villains.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams

The original " Spy Kids " trilogy focused solely on Carmen and Juni Cortez, siblings who discover that their parents are secret agents and decide to become members of a secret spy organization. The first film introduced audiences to the characters. While that first entry does have its merits, the sequel is where things truly get wild and crazy for the franchise.

In "Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," Carmen and Juni travel to a mysterious island filled with dangerous mutated animals as they fight against a pair of rival kid agents. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the film features his signature blend of chaotic action and gross-out humor that would come to define the franchise. In addition to its young actors, the ensemble adult cast of Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Danny Trejo, Bill Paxton, and Steve Buscemi is another highlight of the film.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl

Though not an official entry in the "Spy Kids" franchise, " The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl " shares a lot of similarities with the former series. More specifically, the visuals are very similar to that of "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over." Whereas that "Spy Kids" entry saw the Cortez kids entering a video game world, "Sharkboy and Lavagirl" saw the dreams of a boy named Max come to life as two superhero characters he imagined become real and take him to another planet to help save it from an evil madman.

Since the film was originally shown in 3D, much of the visuals lose their weight when watched on an average television. Still, fans of the "Spy Kids" brand will find a lot to enjoy about this film. At the very least, you could get some enjoyment out of seeing a young Taylor Lautner as Sharkboy and George Lopez playing the main villain, Mr. Electric.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Each entry in the " Harry Potter " series can be treated like a separate adventure. Everyone has their opinion on which installment is the best, and most critics would argue that it's the final installment , but the third entry is definitely up there. "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" may not feature Harry facing off against Voldemort, but he does have to deal with the arrival of escaped convict Sirius Black and a slew of vicious monsters known as Dementors.

After two fairly lighthearted entries, "Prisoner of Azkaban" is the installment that helps the franchise mature a little bit without sacrificing the magical elements of the first two films. It's also the entry that features some of the franchise's greatest moments, from Harry's ultimate confrontation with Black to Harry and his best friend Hermione traveling back in time and Potter successfully using the Patronus charm to fight off a wave of Dementors.

Critic Reviews for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Audience reviews for journey 2: the mysterious island.

What's interesting about this standard adventure tale is how it tells it's story: the barest bones of construction, and only the points you are already well versed with (from all the other adventure tales they've "borrowed" from) to get to the point quickly. Quite literally they find a "secret map written in code" and decipher the thing in less than 5 minutes, and then "it's off to the island!". Everything happens fast, and everyone's only playing a cliche, and so after a minute it becomes cool simply watching the race to the end. Should I tell you "no surprises here"? If I did, that would be the only surprise of this feature.

journey 2 related movies

Better than the first mostly due to the fact that the cast were more likeable and the story wasn't as cheesy, It's still cheesy but it's fun, The effects were ok but some looked pretty bad in places, I can't comment on the 3D as I watched the 2D version but just like the first it looked like it would be good in 3D, The story was predictable but fun and most of all my kids enjoyed it and that's the films target audience so it's hard to be too critical.

I just finished watching on my cable this science fiction adventure comedy directed by Brad Peyton. This is a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, and is based on another Jules Verne novel, this time The Mysterious Island. Very unusual cast stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, and Kristin Davis. The story was written by Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn. This movie became a box office success with a worldwide gross of nearly $326 million, surpassing its predecessor, I think mainly because of the 3D technology. The story is happening four years since the events of the first movie, and starts with the 18-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) involved in a chase with the police which ended with him driving into a swimming pool. His step-father Hank (Dwayne Johnson) arrives and later discovers that Sean had broken into a satellite research centre in order to boost the signal of a code he'd received by someone he suspects is Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather who had been missing for two years. Wanting to bond with his stepson the next day, Hank helps Sean decipher the code of Jules Verne and makes a map from the three books in the coded letter with the coordinates to its location. All they need to do now is to convince Sean's mother to let the both of them go in search of the island. This is a film with very likable characters and actors in an adventure which could excite the younger audience, but not too exciting for the older. It is moving quickly but parts of the story almost seemed unrelated at some moments. Directing seemed done without any motivation... that doesn't mean it was bad, but wasn't very noticeable. If you want to spend a night with a family watching something which is semi-sweet and very colourful, give it a go!

Journey to ridiculous. But nice visuals/SFX. The Rock delivers the same crappola performance he's famous for...sadly.

Civil War Plays Like a Nightmare. You Should Still See It.

A24’s most expensive movie to date is borderline incoherent. that doesn’t mean it’s not important..

The year is unspecified—it could be a few years into some alternate future, or it could be right now. The president, a clean-cut establishment type played by Nick Offerman, is unnamed, his party and political affiliations unclear (though his rhetoric in an address to the nation sounds disturbingly authoritarian). And the precise nature of the domestic conflict that has torn the United States apart and turned the nation’s major cities into zones of open warfare is unexplained. In Civil War , the provocative fourth feature from Alex Garland ( Ex Machina , Annihilation , Men ), the details about why and how America collapsed into violent chaos are immaterial. What Garland wants is to drop us into the middle of that violent chaos as it unfolds, to make us see our familiar surroundings—ordinary blocks lined with chain drugstores and clothing boutiques—recast as active battlegrounds, with snipers on rooftops and local militias enforcing their own sadistic versions of the law.

One thing Garland’s at times frustratingly opaque script does go out of its way to clarify is that the ideological fissures in this alternate version of America occur along different fault lines than the ones that remain from the country’s actual civil war. The main threat to what we’ll call the Offerman administration is the secessionist group the Western Forces, a Texas-California alliance that’s intentionally impossible to extrapolate from our current red state–blue state split. There is also a separate rebel movement of some kind based in Florida, but above all, there is unchecked street violence and general social disorder. One early exchange of dialogue suggests that the war has been going on for some 14 months, which seems like too short a time for the country to have fallen into the advanced state of dystopia in which we find it: highways choked with empty cars, most of the population in hiding, the internet all but nonfunctional except in a few urban centers. But again, the point is less plausibility than viscerality. Garland got his start writing a zombie movie, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later , and he has also co-written an award-winning action video game. Civil War , A24’s most expensive movie to date, sometimes plays like a mashup of those two genres, with the viewer as first-person player and our armed fellow citizens as the zombies.

As the film begins, Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), a veteran war photographer,  is in New York City, holed up at a hotel that doubles as a makeshift command center for the press. Knowing that the Western Forces are on the verge of taking the capital, Lee and her longtime professional partner, a wire-service reporter named Joel (Wagner Moura), are planning a perilous road trip from New York to D.C. in the unlikely hope of landing an interview with the embattled president. Lee’s longtime mentor, news editor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), warns them that the plan is sheer madness—then asks if, despite his age and limited mobility, he can get in on the action.

As they’re preparing to leave, they’re joined, despite Lee’s protests, by Jessie ( Priscilla ’s Cailee Spaeny), an aspiring photojournalist in her early 20s who idolizes Lee’s work but has no experience in war zones. Bringing along the stowaway Lee disparages as a “kindergartner” will only, she argues, put all of them in even more danger. These doubts turn out to be justified: The presence of Jessie, a live wire with a penchant for unnecessary risk-taking, makes the journey to D.C. even more perilous, while forcing Lee to confront how jaded she’s become after years of compartmentalizing her most scarring memories. On the way to the capital, this multigenerational foursome encounters gas-station vigilantes, a shootout at an abandoned Christmas-themed amusement park, and a gut-churning encounter with a racist militant played by Dunst’s real-life husband, Jesse Plemons.

In its vision of journalism as a form of amoral adventure-seeking, Civil War belongs to a long tradition of films about hardened war correspondents in far-flung places, movies like A Private War and The Year of Living Dangerously . But the fact that the carnage these reporters are documenting is homegrown shifts the inflection significantly. Suddenly it’s impossible to exoticize or otherwise alienate ourselves from the bloodshed onscreen, which makes us ask ourselves what we were doing exoticizing it in the first place. This effect of moral immediacy is Civil War ’s greatest strength, and the reason it feels like an important movie of its moment even if it isn’t a wholly coherent or consistently insightful one.

Garland’s idea of throwing us in medias res during a civil war in progress is a bold gambit, and his cinematic instincts—his sense of where to put a camera and how long to draw out a moment of suspense—are often keen. The horrible realities he makes us look at—intra-civilian combat, physical and psychological torture, the everyday depths of human depravity—are summoned powerfully enough that Civil War remains emotionally and physically affecting even as the ideas it seeks to explore remain fuzzy. Is this a critique of contemporary journalism or a salute to the courage of reporters on the front lines? If it’s meant to be suspended somewhere in between, how does the filmmaker position himself on that line, and how should we, the audience, feel about the protagonists’ sometimes dubious choices?

Even as they document street battles and point-blank executions, adrenaline junkies Jessie and Joel occasionally exchange devilish grins. Meanwhile, Lee is all but incapable of normal human relationships because of her unacknowledged PTSD. A late sequence finds them unofficially embedded with an especially ruthless death squad; it would seem important to establish whether this alignment is meant to signify their ultimate journalistic corruption or a necessary compromise for the survival of the Fourth Estate. Even on the level of plot logic, the movie poses a question that the script’s curiously thin worldbuilding never answers: If the internet and most of the nation’s industrial infrastructure are in ruins, how are ordinary people reading Joel’s articles and looking at the photos that Lee herself struggles for hours to upload? If it is intended in part as a satire of journalistic opportunism, Civil War should be more specific about the conditions of 21 st -century media in wartime, especially given that it’s coming out at a moment when front-line reporters face more physical danger than at any time in recent memory.

All we learn of Lee’s background is that, like Jessie, she is from a farm town in the interior of the U.S., with parents who are in stubborn denial about the crumbling of the republic. But because Kirsten Dunst is a remarkable artist, she makes this somewhat underwritten character, who on paper could have been a stoic “badass” stereotype, into a complex and indelible presence. Dunst also, perhaps for the first time, loses the girlish quality she has brought even to middle-aged characters: Lee Smith is a plain, scowling woman with a glum, even abrasive mien. She’s a person whose perspective on life has narrowed down to the size of a camera lens, yet she’s also a committed journalist and a fiercely loyal colleague. As the other three sort-of protagonists, Moura, Henderson, and Spaeny all turn in finely tuned performances that bring a depth to their characters beyond what the script provides, but it’s Dunst whose thousand-yard stare and deep-buried grief will stay with me.

“What kind of American are you?” Plemons’ fatigues-and-pink-sunglasses-clad character asks the journalists one by one as he terrorizes them at gunpoint in the movie’s scariest and most successful sequence. (Not for nothing, it’s also the moment that suggests the most strongly that the vaguely defined conflict in this fictive America has everything to do with race.) That may be the screenplay’s smartest single line, in that it dispenses with the metaphorical quality of Civil War ’s imagined political dystopia and presents us with the real question many Americans are asking each other and themselves right now, sometimes in a self-reflective mode, sometimes in a contentious or overtly threatening one. As the unfolding of that encounter with Plemons makes clear, as soon as the question is asked with a weapon in your hand, it becomes a trick question, posed not to start a conversation but to set a trap. Civil War often leaves the audience feeling trapped in an all-too-realistic waking nightmare, but when it finally lets us go, mercifully short of the two-hour mark, it sends us out of the theater talking.

Dev Patel reflects on 'one hell of a journey' directing Monkey Man, his first feature film

A smiling black-haired man of South Asian descent wearing a grey suit on the red carpet

When British actor Dev Patel — famous for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and Lion (2016) — started working on his first film as director, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

"It was truly a humbling experience — I had bitten off way more than I can chew," Patel told  ABC RN's The Screen Show on the eve of the release of his action flick Monkey Man.

"It was a process of adapting at every turn [and] facing catastrophe every day."

Originally, Monkey Man was to be shot in India, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

"We were in the biggest slum in Mumbai and, by the end of that week, it was like 28 Days Later: The roads were closed, the fog had lifted, the pollution had lifted, the skies were clear, but there was not a soul on the streets," Patel recalls.

The film appeared dead in the water and Patel left Mumbai on one of the last flights out of the city.

However, Patel — who co-wrote the film with Paul Angunawela and John Collee — and his co-producer Jomon Thomas hastily devised a plan B.

A "friend of a friend" knew a filmmaker who ran a studio on the Indonesian island of Batam.

"We blagged to our financiers that we'd been there and seen how amazing the facilities were — I'd never been — and we managed to resurrect the film," Patel says.

"It was one hell of a journey."

Out of the frying pan

In Indonesia, the challenges continued.

"It was like my own personal Heart of Darkness," Patel says.

He'd scout a location only to have police declare it a "red zone" on the day of shooting.

"You've got all the crew ready, you're spending all the money and … you can't film, so we were trying to find any corner of the hotel or [an] alleyway somewhere to film and reshape a sequence last minute. [And then] the border started closing on us," he says.

A man of South Asian descent with black hair and a moustache with a large camera on a film set

The pandemic lockdown also meant an absence of the crowds you'd expect to see in the bustling Indian city where the film was set.

"Every tailor, accountant, lighting guy that was behind camera became on-camera talent," Patel says.

"It was being as scrappy and resourceful as you could. Cameras were breaking, and we couldn't ship in new equipment. I taped my iPhone to the inside of the rickshaw to get shots … It was pretty mad."

As if making an action movie during lockdown wasn't chaotic enough, Patel broke his hand while shooting the first action scene.

Patel says Monkey Man was a small-budget film, "so to wear a cast and have to paint that out throughout the film would have been impossible".

Patel and his director of photography Sharone Meir decided to continue filming for as long as they could. When his hand "swelled up like an elephant's foot", they realised Patel needed to seek medical treatment.

"We got on a jet, went to this hospital in Jakarta where they put a screw in my hand, and the doctor made me promise him not to put any weight on it or do anything strenuous," Patel recalls.

"He's like, 'If you bend this screw, it will be like pulling a bent nail out of wood.' And we went straight back into the action.

"It was madness. I was a man possessed."

The legend of Hanuman

In the film, Patel plays Kid, an orphaned village boy who grows up to be a monkey-masked fighter in an underground boxing club.

"He's a literal performing monkey in this underground wrestling ring. I call it the armpit of the country — it's sweaty and hot," Patel says.

"He's the ultimate underdog, and his journey is to try to challenge the gods among us."

Much of the action takes place in the King's Club, an elite private members' club that Patel says represents "the microcosm of India".

"India's this land of extreme contradiction and juxtaposition and contrast. I wanted to capture the opulence of it and also the claustrophobia."

The story is inspired by the legend of Hanuman: a half-man, half-monkey Hindu deity with special significance for Patel, whose parents grew up in Nairobi's Indian community before emigrating to the UK separately in their teens.

Patel remembers his father wearing a Hanuman symbol on a necklace. "[Hanuman] had been an emblem of the men in my family," he says.

While Patel, who grew up in London, says he tried to deny his Indian roots out of "fear of being bullied or not fitting in" for a long time, he picked up on parallels between Hindu mythology and pop culture characters including Superman early on.

"A lot of this [superhero] iconography is pulled from Eastern mythologies — [from] Hanuman splitting his chest like Superman tearing his shirt to flying in the sky [and his] superhuman strength," he says.

An action film with heart

A self-described "humble fan" of the action genre, Patel drew inspiration from Korean revenge thrillers and classics of Hong Kong cinema, including Bruce Lee's final film, Game of Death (1978).

Some action films feel "like a beat-'em-up video game [with] non-stop punches and kicks that wash over you. You don't feel the collateral of that violence or the toll it can take on a person", Patel explains.

He wanted to create something more meaningful in his first outing as director.

"As a performer, I gravitate to … projects that are full of soul and heart and have something to say," he says.

That involved engaging with his cultural heritage head-on, fusing Hindu mythology with social critique.

Patel says his film asks: "Who are the real 10-headed demons of society? Who are the people who are trapped? And who are the underdogs who band together to challenge these so-called demons in mythology?"

A line from the film — "The pain will leave you once it's finished teaching you" — became a guiding light for the actor-director in his characterisation of Kid, who he describes as "this scarred hero riddled with trauma".

As the film progresses, Kid comes to re-evaluate his scars.

"They're not just symbols of trauma, but of triumph. He's a survivor. These are war wounds. And those physical and internal scars make him stronger in the end."

Monkey Man is in cinemas now.
