Experiences of a lifetime

Past, present and future blend into an unforgettable journey in a tropical paradise, steeped in culture and nature as you stroll through gardens of tomorrow in Singapore, explore ancient kingdoms in Java, visit flower-filled temples on Bali, and see dragons of yore on timeless Komodo Islands.

Singapore sights, gems of Java, Bali highs and Komodo giants combine with stays in luxurious exotic resorts to make this small group adventure culturally enriching in every way. Go back to the future in sophisticated Singapore... discover jeweled palaces and sandstone temples in Borobudur... overnight in Yogyakarta for dinner and a ballet performance at 10th-century Prambanan Temple... experience the beauty and blessings of Bali in Ubud... take a private boat ride to a Komodo island for a walk amidst dragons found nowhere else... and find bliss as you cast your kites and cares to the wind in Bali's Jimbaran Bay.

By boat to Komodo National Park

Back in time to the island home of the komodo dragon.

Found in the Komodo Islands of Indonesia, the Komodo dragon is an unusually large species of monitor lizard... the largest living lizard on Earth, growing up to 10 feet in length and weighing around 150 pounds. These carnivorous predators hunt mammals and birds, sometimes in packs of two or three, and often feed on carrion as well. Komodo dragons usually avoid humans, although attacks on people have occurred. First noted by scientists about a century ago, they've become popular attractions in zoos around the world. Observe them, safely, in their natural habitat – on a visit with a local guide by boat to Komodo National Park, established to protect the species.

Traditional dance on Bali

A sunset performance of traditional balinese dance.

Traditional dance is a cultural highlight on Bali. One popular form of Balinese dance, known as Kecak (a.k.a. the Ramayana Monkey Chant), was developed on Bali in the 1930s. Typically performed by a circle of 150 or so male dancers wearing checked cloth around their waists, it calls for the dancers to percussively chant "chak" and move their hands and arms, depicting a battle from the ancient epic poem, the Ramayana. Seeing it performed at sunset is an experience you won't soon forget!

An evening at Prambanan Temple

Enjoy a spectacular ballet show at prambanan temple.

Built in the 10th century, Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island of Java, is the largest temple complex dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva in Indonesia. With this imposing temple as a backdrop, watch a performance of a ballet show involving 200 professional dancers and musicians on an open-air stage.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay

Timeless luxury on jimbaran bay.

At Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay, experience an authentically Balinese luxury resort nestled right on the oceanfront. Inspired by traditional Balinese architecture, the Resort's villas are housed within a private stone-walled courtyard featuring separate thatched-roof pavilions. Each villa includes oversized indoor and outdoor living areas, lush gardens, a private pool and a sun terrace.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

All U.S. citizens require a valid passport to enter Singapore and Indonesia, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain at least three blank visa pages, two of which need to be side by side of one another. If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest U.S. passport agency or consult the U.S. State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .

All travelers must fill out the SG Arrival Card at least 3 days prior to their arrival in Singapore. This can be found at: eservices.ica.gov.sg/sgarrivalcard/ .

U.S. Citizens do not require a visa for Singapore. A visa is required for Indonesia. This will be issued on our arrival in Indonesia and Tauck will be taking care of the visa fee.

Non-U.S. citizens should check with the Embassies or Consulates of Singapore and Indonesia to determine necessary travel documents.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $759  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

We advise that you always drink bottled water with an unbroken seal. Avoid having ice in your drinks, and clean your teeth with bottled water.

Public toilet facilities are rare. You are encouraged to take every opportunity to use a clean toilet in places such as hotels and restaurants. Most hotels catering to an international clientele provide western style restroom facilities.

Always keep mosquito repellent with you and be sure to pay special attention to mosquito protection between dusk and dawn.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes four on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk moderate distances over varied terrain.  This tour includes numerous steps throughout the itinerary. Various modes of transportation will be used to highlight different aspects of the culture and geography Singapore and Indonesia, including airplane, train, motor coach and boat.

There is a significant amount of walking on this journey; however, the pace of the itinerary has been carefully planned to intersperse sightseeing with leisurely days to ensure you have a most enjoyable time.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. Due to the ancient nature of several of the sites you will visit during your sojourn in Singapore and Indonesia, stairs and walkways are sometimes dark, uneven, steep and/or slippery.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Hotels in Singapore and Indonesia do not always have designated non-smoking rooms, but your preference will be forwarded to the hotels and every effort will be made to accommodate your request, although it cannot be guaranteed.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click here for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climates in Singapore and Indonesia can vary, depending on the location and the season of travel. The equator crosses through both countries and high temperatures and humidity can be expected throughout the year. In Singapore the average temperature is 91°F (33°C) during the day and  79°F (26°C) at night. Short rain showers are a common occurrence throughout the year.

Indonesia has a more tropical climate and two distinct seasons, with an average temperature of 83°F (28°C). The rainy season is from October to April. May to September, the weather is dry and sunny; however there are still some short rains throughout this time period. In the more mountainous regions, the weather will be a bit cooler than that of the seaside regions.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website,  noaa.gov , by clicking  here .

Kensington Tours Review (My HONEST Experience)

I recently came across Kensington Tours, a company that specializes in creating customized, private-guided trips. I was impressed by their website, and decided to take a trip through them.

Kensington Tours offers a wide range of trips, including group and small group tours. They cater to various interests and preferences which makes them an attractive option for diverse groups of travelers. In particular, I was impressed to find out that first-time customers were pleased with their experiences, praising the logistics, planning, and knowledgeable local guides provided by Kensington Tours.

In this article, I will be telling you my opinion of this tour-booking company, based on my experiences of travelling with them.

Overview of Kensington Tours

Kensington Tours Reviews

Kensington Tours can be worth your money if you select the correct packages. However, some people have faced problems, so be careful when booking.

This company also provides experienced guides who will take you through all the sightseeing places and accompany you on tour. They are mainly used for traveling to foreign countries where people need to learn more about the local scene. The guides will know the local language and can interact with the locals on your behalf.

You won’t have to worry about anything other than your flights to reach your destination.

Services Offered

During my research about Kensington Tours, I discovered that they provide customized itineraries and personalized travel experiences. A wonderful woman by the name of Amanda Jex was my destination lead, and she was very accommodating to the last-minute changes we made to the itineraries.

Kensington Tours made our multi-country trips stress-free with efficient logistical services, such as on-time drivers, clear signage, and convenient train tickets.

Kensington Tours delivered a great bespoke European vacation for my visit to Italy and Switzerland. The company listened carefully to my family’s desires and tailored the itinerary accordingly.

kensington tours singapore

Destinations Covered

Kensington Tours offers a variety of trips to different parts of the world. Some of the popular destinations I found include:

  • Ultimate Ireland (Small Groups):  This 13-day group tour costs $7,775 and covers iconic Irish attractions.
  • Northern Lights Escape:  A 6-day small group tour priced at $2,340, with a focus on chasing the mesmerizing aurora borealis.
  • Iceland Discovery:  This 8-day small group tour, costing $3,950, takes travelers to the stunning landscapes of Iceland.
  • Everest Base Camp Trek:  An adventurous small group tour that brings participants on a trek to the base camp of Mount Everest.

Pros and Cons of Kensington Tours

Kensington Tours gives exceptional service, tailored itineraries, and knowledgeable local travel guides. The company offers a wide range of  interesting trips  catering to diverse interests and preferences, such as small group tours in Ireland, Northern Lights escapes, and Everest Base Camp treks. Their flexibility and customization options make them appealing to travelers looking for unique or personalized experiences.

In addition to the impressive variety of tours, I was also happy with the accommodations, transportation, and overall logistics provided by Kensington Tours. Their level of organization and attention to detail contributed to a smooth and stress-free travel experience.

However, there have been instances where some travelers had  less than satisfactory experiences  with Kensington Tours. It’s important to note that discrepancies in service quality or tour expectations can happen with any tour operator and do not necessarily reflect the overall offerings of the company.

My main gripe with them is that they charge a very high cancellation fee ($350 per person). This makes it difficult to book a trip with them if you are not sure about when exactly you will be departing.

Nonetheless, potential issues to be aware of include inadequate accommodations or miscommunication in terms of expectations and itineraries . To avoid disappointment, I recommend doing thorough research on the specific tour you are interested in and reading multiple reviews to gather a well-rounded understanding of what to expect.

Can You Cancel Tours On Kensington Tours?

All cancellations of confirmed reservations on Kensington Tours will face a penalty of $350 per person. You will receive a full refund only if you cancel the tour 90 days before departure.

If you cancel a booked tour 60-89 days before departure, the penalty paid will be 30% of the booking price. Any canceled trip 30-59 days before the tour will face a loss of 50% of the program price.

Any tour cancellation about 29 days before departure won’t qualify for a refund. The cancellation fees will be 100% of the program price.

How To Get Refunds From Kensington Tours?

You need to contact customer support to get a refund from Kensington Tours. You have the option to call them or send them an email on their registered email ID.

They levy heavy cancellation charges even if you cancel a month in advance. They won’t be responsible for the cancellation fees imposed by the airlines and other associated services.

Is It Better To Trave With A Tour Company Or On Your Own?

It is better to go with a tour company if you are traveling to a different country. However, arranging the trip yourself is better when traveling within your own country.

When visiting foreign countries, you will face many cultural and language barriers. These issues can cause trouble in planning your perfect trip.

Additionally, you may miss out on good tourist spots in foreign countries. This will not happen on guided tours since they know them all.

However, if you are familiar with the country and its language, you can travel alone. It will be a fun experience if you have the time to research properly.

All in all, just adopt this rule of thumb 👉 Domestic Travel – Travel on your own; International Travel – Travel with a tour company.

Final Remarks

In this article, I tried to give you an honest depiction of what traveling with Kensington Tours might look like.

I would suggest you try Kensington Tours if you have the budget. Just be sure to be clear in your communications and what you expect from the trip, especially the itineraries.

kensington tours singapore

Hello forum,

I am an experienced traveler who has visited over 104 countries and dealt with many tour operators, good and bad, and Kensington Tours was by far my worst experience with any of them. I’m sharing my recent experience below in the sole hope that others considering this company will have some indication of what they are getting into.

-From the outset Kensington refused to provide names or contact information for any drivers or guides meeting us at during any phase of our trip.

-During one leg a driver almost failed to show up entirely, arriving over half an hour late as we were prepared to give up waiting and board a taxi.

-Kensington’s agents in Santiago had no knowledge of two meals confirmed on our itinerary.

-Kensington insisted we would be flying to Lima, Peru when our itinerary had us confirmed for Punta Arenas, Chile.

-Kensington scheduled a 5:20am car for a 6:00am flight , knowing that the airport was 35 minutes away.

-During a six hour drive from Torres Del Paine to El Calafate for which we had confirmed a box lunch, the lunch was forgotten by the guide, and no water was available for the entire journey.

-When inquiring about adding Machu Picchu to our schedule Kensington made no attempt to warn us that on February 13th the U.S. Embassy in Lima issued a security message for US citizens indicating a specific threat to kidnap U.S. citizens in the Cusco and Machu Picchu area.

-Kensington went ahead and charged $11,000 for the Machu Picchu trip to my credit card without my consent and with full knowledge that we were no longer interested. They reversed the charge only after being warned by the President of American Express Platinum that this was unacceptable behavior from a merchant affiliate.

I am not seeking any form of compensation from Kensington, but I hope that others will heed the above and spare themselves a similar experience.

Hello AndyFromAmagansett

Welcome to Tripadvisor and sorry to have of your experience.

Interestingly there are already quite a few threads on Kensington Tours so it might have been better to just have posted your experience to an existing thread instead of create a new one. Anyway, you might want to post your experience to a thread for them in Peru. Here is a link to the search I just did for 'kensington tours' on the main Tripadvisor homepage.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Search?q=Kensington+Tours&sub-search=SEARCH&geo=&pid=3826&returnTo=__2F__#ssrc=f,o=0,c=global

Hope this is helpful and trust your future travel experiences will be better. Importantly, keep traveling. We have to take the good with the bad!!!

Having said all that, I must also comment that our accommodations were outstanding, and they weren't all five star either. Our agent did a fantastic job in suggesting places that were in great locations, unique, or historic and atmospheric. We were thrilled with each place we stayed for one reason or two others. In several of the places we were upgraded, which I felt was most probably due to Kensington. All in all ours was a great trip, and as a result, I have recommended Kensington to friends. However, I have to say that after reading what Andy went through and the bit of discomfort we experienced due to a lack of preparation and information by Kensington, I would have to attach a disclaimer to any future recommendations that I would give the company.

I wish I had seen this, post before I spent a fortune paying Kensington for a family trip to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. They utterly failed to provide the required services and left us abandoned rather than guided. Their hotel recommendation was poor and they have responded to my inquiries with rudeness and insult. I would never use them again or recommend them.

My Kensington Tours experience could not have been more different. I’ve done two trips (Kenya & Tanzania 2010 and Peru 2013). Their staff were extremely knowledgeable and always quick to answer my frequent emails and questoins. Our guides were always on time, super friendly and really knowledgeable. In Peru and especially Africa they went out of their way to keep us happy and exceed our expectations. Our guide Godfrey knew the craziest details about every animal and bird. On our last day in Maasai Mara my friend who is a photographer was disappointed to not yet have gotten the perfect elephant photo. So Godfrey changed our entire day and we focused on tracking the herds until he got the perfect shot. I’m planning Myanmar next – won’t hesitate to call Kensington.

I agree with this review wholeheartedly. I am also an experienced traveler - more like 45 countries. I agree that I have had good and bad experiences but thought that I knew what to ask for in order to get close to what I wanted. My "expert" at Kensington tours, however, rejected every good idea I had for our trip. This wasn't just incompetence; it was an arrogance.

I decided to take my wife to Iceland for her 55th birthday as she always wanted to see the Northern Lights. This year was the best year in 60 years. There were Northern Lights 27 out of 28 days in February and 4 out of the 5 days we were in Iceland. Although we saw them faintly from the city, we never really saw them. I suggested booking 2 nights to see the Northern Lights, since that was our main reason for going to Iceland, but I was told that it would not be necessary because Kensington Tours would take care of picking the right night. Just before I got to Iceland, the forecast for our first couple of days looked clearer than the rest. I then sent several emails requesting that our Northern Lights tour be moved up from the last night to one of the first nights. Instead of doing as requested, Kensington Tours managed to move our trip to the week after we left Iceland but failed to tell us of this change. As a result, after hearing people talking day after day about the amazing Northern Lights, on the day we expected our tour no one showed up. As a result, we booked a much more expensive tour to chase the Northern lights. Unfortunately, we took this tour on the only day we were in Iceland that the Northern Lights did not appear. The tour companies in Iceland have a policy if you do not see the Northern Lights, they will let you go for free until you do see them. Unfortunately, as Kensington Tours booked us for our last night in Iceland instead of the beginning of the week as I had repeatedly requested, we could not take advantage of this guarantee.

The other thing that we really wanted to do while in Iceland was a 3 hour hike on a glacier. When we arrived at the glacier there were two buses from the same tour company one for a 1 hour tour and one for a 3 hour hike, and total pandaemonium. We got off the bus and were called by a guide from the tour company to get our crampons. It was only after we were on the glacier that we learned that we and 2 other couples from our bus were on the 1 hour instead of the 3 hour hike.

When our concerns were raised with Kensington Tours after the fact, pointing out the dozen or more emails making it clear that the Northern Lights were the primary reason we were going to Iceland, requesting to pay for multiple Northern Lights tours, requesting our Northern Lights tour be moved to the beginning of our trip, and the fact that had any of these requests been honored we would have seen fabulous Northern Lights, Kensington tours initially only would not even refund the costs we incurred for these failed events. They had no understanding of the thousands of dollars we had wasted on a bounced tour. Nor did they appreciate that two professionals have difficulty taking time off from work and use them to arrange a vacation so it will be perfect when they do. Eventually, after multiple emails Kensington tours reimbursed us for the failed trips but totally refused to take responsibility for the failed trip or the cost of going again to see the Northern Lights.

If I have the time, I arrange our own vacations, but when pressed by the demands of my jobs, I rely on tour companies. I will forever regret the Google search that came up with Kensington Tours as experts for Iceland travel. I would not use them to book me a walk across the street and hope that you will read this and avoid the same mistake that I made.

If you want any more details on how unprofessional and unknowledgeable Kensington Tours was during out trip to Iceland, please contact me at [email protected].

We too are very experienced world travelers. We chose Kensington to plan our family vacation to Thailand because we wanted a high quality customized tour that would include small children. Custom tour? No! Every excursion was a hotel lobby pamphlet tour that I could have arranged myself. We did not have one guide accompany us throughout our entire trip as we were led to believe. A guide would pick us up at the airport and deliver us to our hotel. The next day a different guide would show up to take us on our "custom" pamphlet tour.

We were booked in hotels very far from the planned excursions. It took more than an hour in Bangkok to go to our Palace tour. Then an hour back to the hotel. Then another hour to go on our evening "foodie" tour, and an hour back. Don't go for the "foodie" street food tour.

Then in Chang Mai we were booked into a substitute four star hotel (I'm not sure how they got four stars!) instead of the five star hotel on the itinerary. One family of four were split into two separate rooms on two different floors, even though we had requested and paid for connecting rooms for them almost a year in advance!

Then in Phuket we were an hours drive from our beautiful (but remote) hotel to the launch site to visit the Phi Phi Islands. Then more hours in the boat. The entire day was spent traveling in a van or in a boat with very little time to enjoy any sights.

We were scheduled to have a jungle safari walk in the morning (remember the rain), have lunch, drive the three hours to Phuket airport and arrive in Bangkok in the evening for a 6:00 am flight the next morning to go back home. Of course, international flights require you to be there two hours ahead of time, so we had to be at the Bangkok airport by 4:00 am. Terrible scheduling for our last two days. I called a local travel company and begged them to rescue us from Kensington's inept planning. So we got to Bangkok in the late afternoon instead of late at night. That helped even though we had to pay extra to Elephant Hills for the change in plans.

I didn't see any schedules for our in-country flights until we got to Thailand. I had vouchers for all the hotels and the little guided tours. So, I actually was the guide in charge of overseeing the trip, not Kensington!

For the price they charge for their off-the-shelf "custom" tours, you can do a lot better than Kensington. We will definitely never use them again.

Never on any previous trip with Kensington have their representatives failed to accommodate our group with suggestions and or requests for changes in our trips during the planning stages and or during the actual trip. In fact, they have gone out of their way to work with us. They are easy to communicate with while in country--I have emailed our representative before we turn in for the night and by the next morning, our answer to any question and or solution to any problems--potential or actual-- is waiting for us. In Nepal, our rep actually called the corporate offices of the airline we were flying with and made it possible for us to check our bags straight through to NYC instead of having to re check everything onto our connecting flight from Katmandu to Delhi.

I find it regretful that any individual feels "OK" about publishing such a negative review. I guess that one person's idea of adventure travel is not another man's idea of adventure travel. And, perhaps if our previous trips with Kensington had cost even a fraction of the amounts of money that you are mentioning....well, perhaps we would have "sweated the small stuff" more. Wow...an $11,000 charge. Glad you have a platinum card...we travel the world quite nicely with our green one.

I would not hesitate to travel with Kensington again and I highly recommend them to anyone thinking of traveling with them.

PS It is every US citizen's responsibility to be aware of travel warnings. That is not the responsibility of your tour company. I strongly suggest that you register with the US State Department prior to your next trip. The app for you smartphone--US State Department Smart Traveler-- is free and you will receive any warnings regarding in country related warnings to US citizens 24/7 directly to your phone.

I was recently asked for some recommendations on an Africa trip so looked up some old emails and itinerary to send a good friend. I took my mother there for her 60th birthday in 2009 through Kensington Tours. A close friend knew the founder of the company and highly recommended it. I did not expect any special treatment, but was surprised by the level of abhorrent service and after service. I had initially tried to sort out things directly with the company rather than post a negative review as I know how damaging that can be for a company that is dependent on online reviews. However, the only compensation we were offered was a credit to travel again through Kensington Tours, which my mother and I will never do again. Since I was looking up my old itinerary, I was curious to see whether others had experienced the same poor service for such an expensive trip such as a Safari and was relieved to see that others had taken the time to post the reviews.

There appears to be some others in this thread who have had good experiences with the company and I'm sure that some of the dealings must be positive or the company would find themselves out of business. However, I was surprised that there was an accusation that people take lightly posting negative replies. I think it is safe to say that when you consider online reviews, many are hesitant to post negative reviews so those who have taken the time must have truly had horrible experiences. We paid the company nearly $20,000 USD for a trip of a lifetime for my mother - it is not because we have platinum cards or travel that way typically, but my mother had wanted to go to Africa all her life. I wanted the experience to be the best it could be.

The main issue was our driver. He was horrible. He was lazy, rude, unhelpful, unwilling to accommodate and at times, scoffed at us. When we were travelling through an area where tze tze flies are abundant, he refused to close the windows and turn on the a/c in the vehicle despite our being attacked and bitten. We paid to have a private safari and the level of service was insulting. We tried our best efforts to give the driver a chance, but he was completely ruining our trip. It was so bad that by the 4th day, we contacted the company contact (which was very difficult to do) and requested a new driver to be sent. There was a great deal of resistance to this and I had to insist that either the company sent a driver or we would hire one and seek compensation from them even if that required legal proceedings. They did in fact send another driver who was a huge improvement, but by the time he arrived we were half way through the safari portion of our trip.

When we arrived at the Ngorongoro Crater, there was a confusion in our room booking. Apparently, Kensington had only booked us for one night instead of two. I had intentionally booked us for two nights at the accommodation there in order for my mother to have an opportunity to have a little rest before we continued through the safari (there were many nights we only spent one night at an accommodation in order to cover what we wished). Because of the mistake, the hotel manager was only able to offer us sub-par family accommodations in a much lower category room than we paid for. Not only was this a poor substitute for a great deal of planning on my part, but this meant we had to pack up and move again the second night to get the room we had paid for for at least the second night. When this was brought up with Kensington Tours on our return, they blamed the hotel for overbooking. There was no effort by the company to seek any refund for the rate of room we were offered nor was there any compensation offered to us for the money they took in payment from us.

Overall, the company seems to be ok, but is not a high quality product. If you are paying a substantial amount for a special trip, I would suggest considering another company to plan your details.

Amazing Egypt and Jordan trip

Dear Moe- On behalf of my entire family, I would like to thank you for the outstanding trip you arranged for us to Egypt and Jordan. Every country representative, city guide, driver and local guide was there at every destination at the right time and place - to meet us and do what was required to make our trip worry free. Most of them knew you by name and respected you based on their past experiences with you. We definitely benefited from that. The guides you set up for us were excellent. They had so much information to share, provided wonderful experiences for us to enjoy and were flexible to our needs. Thank you again Moe for your excellent arrangements. You deserve a gold medal but all I can send you is proper recognition via this email. I have already recommended Kensington to 3 friends. Happy to do more & to go through you in our future trips. Best personal regards from: Hass, Dixie, Angie & Nick

Trip of a Lifetime!

We had a wonderful tour of India this February, planned carefully and so ably by Rahul Dixit, hitting India's Golden Triangle and more: Delhi, Ranthambore, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, flying out of Mumbai. Getting off the airplane in Delhi after 2-days of plane trips, a smiling rep from Kensington with our name sign led us to a tram to take us to customs. The royal treatment continued. We had fantastic guides and drivers each day: Hemesh Chaturvedi in Delhi, Brijesh Joshi in Agra, Mahendra Sharma in Jaipur, Akhilesh Kumar in Varanasi, and Tombi Premlatdevi Singh in Mumbai. Excellent knowledge, and skills getting us through the cities to see the best sights. Our very nice driver "Gaggi" from the Himalayas drove us the most days: in Delhi, Ranthambore, Agra and Jaipur. The hotels were very nice: Taj Palace New Delhi, Khem Villas in the Ranthambore tiger preserve (saw 3 tigers!), Taj Hotel and Convention Center Agra where we were upgraded to a large suite (!) thanks to Nikita the lovely guest manager, Samode Haveli Jaipur, Taj Ganges Varanasi, Trident Nariman Point Mumbai. The trip of a lifetime!

Trip of a lifetime

Our trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand with Kensington was amazing. Thanks to all the planning by Dev Jai every detail was attended to. From getting through immigration at the airport, to cooling wet clothes on the vans. We never had a worry. The hotels were top notch with incredible breakfast every morning. Our guides were knowledgeable and made the history and culture come to life. We especially enjoyed Phi. We look forward to our next trip with Kensington. We were so surprised to receive a personalized gift to celebrate our anniversary. Everyone one involved in our trip were so thoughtful. Thank you Dev.

Costa Rica visit

Camila Rosa worked with me to create my Costa Rica itinerary. She was lovely to work with and incorporated my interests and preferences into the itinerary. She paid attention to the details, provided great advice and was very responsive, making an adjustment to my itinerary after the trip began that made it an even better experience for me. I had private guides and drivers throughout the visit and I can't say enough about how knowledgeable guides Guillermo in Monteverde and Royner Alvarez in Arenal are and what a pleasure it was to spend time with them. They worked very hard to ensure I saw every bird, monkey, sloth and insect possible and also took wonderful photos for me through the magnifying scope. My driver in Arenal Jonathan Segura was terrific and lovely and also drove me to my post tour destination. The tour was an excellent experience and I plan to use Kensington Tours again.

Date of experience : March 04, 2024

Dear Jane, We are so glad to read you had an excellent trip to Costa Rica, and that Camila was able to customize your experience just as we love to do at Kensington Tours. We believe iterating fast is a value to behold - and great to hear some last minute adjustments made your trip even better. Amazing to hear about your local experiences and how your guides also really added to your trip. We look forward to working with you again in the future. Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Kensington Tours 👍👍👍👍

Kensington Tours is top notch! As a travel agent, I interact with different suppliers. Few come close to the quality of Kensington. I want to make mention of Jason Peura, a Central Europe Destination Specialist. Jason created a custom itenirary of Germany from scratch.. He was very knowledgeable of local train routes and hotel’s proximity to notable landmarks. His experience and knowledge of the area was quite impressive.. I look forward to working with Jason and the entire Kensington staff again in the near future.

The trip was amazing and everyone was incredibly kind. We felt safe at all times and had amazing drivers that were incredible at navigating that insane traffic. The boat was a wonderful way to travel down the Nile and was a unique experience. We got to see so much and more than we expected and felt incredibly fulfilled. I think everyone at Kensington was professional, kind and very good at their job. I can absolutely say that I’ll be looking to go through Kensington for future travels. I’d like to specifically thank Moe at Kensington for organizing everything and taking care of every little detail. He was truly amazing!

Father-son trip to Rajasthan

My son and I recently took a two week trip to Rajasthan. Dev Jai coordinated our trip and did an outstanding job listening to our feedback and planning a trip to fit our needs. He never suggested a cookie cutter trip. The tour guides throughout the trip were outstanding. We spent significant time driving, our driver Pincu was the highlight of our trip, friendly and a pleasure to spend two weeks together. We have used Kensington previously and will use again. Highly recommend Dev and the India team. Ask for Pincu. Ed and Steven

Private Party of 4 in Egypt

Our party of 4 just returned from 9 amazing days in Egypt planned by Moe Sami. This was our first experience on a luxury tour and the trip exceeded all our expectations! From the moment we arrived at the airport in Cairo until the day we departed for home the tour director, guides, drivers and staff took care of every detail flawlessly. Both guides, Ramadan in Cairo and Mahmoud in Aswan, were well versed and proud of Egypt’s history and were able to give us insights into local culture as well as ancient history. Mohammed, our tour director, was incredibly charming. Restaurant meals were varied and excellent! And finally, what a variety of museums, temples, tombs and activities!

Dear Janet, We are so happy to read you had an amazing time in Egypt! Our aim is to exceed expectations and we love to read Moe delivered again for such a special first trip. Here's to treasuring memories! Best, -The Team at Kensington Tours

I am a travel advisor and I have had the best experience with KT! Boy, did they have my back when 14 of my clients' flights were canceled traveling together in the summer of 2022. Does anyone remember that summer? We tag-teamed and saved the trip. I am so happy I packaged it all together. KT is a darling in the travel industry and we all speak highly of our experiences. They communicate brilliantly and if something doesn't go quite right they are there to find a solution. I'm working with someone at KT right now for a multi-gen trip and Vanja is my buddy. She's on it.. a true gem to work with.

Andrews Silva’s Expertise in Rio de Janiero

Thank you Andrews for making our trip to Rio de Janiero such a success. We spent four days with him, Jan 23-26, 2024, and he persevered through the rain to show us the city, despite the weather. He was informative, considerate, and knowledgeable, and went out of his way to accommodate our needs. We couldn’t have done it without him. We love you Andrews.

My clients recently returned from a 16 day trip to India & Nepal. I worked with Rahul Dixit. I can not thank him enough for his patience, professionalism and knowledgeable recommendations. Because of Rahul, their trip went smoothly and was filled with memory making sites. I was assured knowing they were in the capable hands of Kensington during this one in a lifetime adventure! Thank you again!

It is great to hear this once in a lifetime experience was a huge success. Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

A great trip to So. Spain & Morocco

Thank you Moe Sami for a great trip to Southern Spain and Morocco. We both enjoyed it immensely, it met or exceeded our expectations in almost every way. Our guide and drivers were professional, knowledgeable and available to us as we needed them. We especially got to know our Moroccan team (Zouhair and Issan) and developed a good rapport with them. We would recommend you and Kensington tours to anyone. The only suggestion we have is to ensure the ferry crossing from Algeciras is booked for foot passengers. Our itinerary showed the crossing to be 35 minutes, in reality it was 90 minutes and it was a cargo ferry. It was an awkward transition with luggage, stairs and no assistance in guiding us off the ferry. A small glitch, not upsetting, we would just like to assist any future travelers that you may book for the same route. We really enjoyed everything about this tour including the history (thanks to our knowledgable guides), architecture and food! Thanks again, Ron and Jill Gilmore

Date of experience : February 11, 2024

Dear Ron and Jill, Thank you very much for your kind review! We are happy to read about your experience with Moe and your guides in destination adding so much to your time there! We thank you so much for your feedback regarding the ferry crossing from Algeciras. It definitely sounds like an area needing improvement and we apologize for the awkward experience. Thank you again, and we look forward to working with you in the future! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Trip of a lifetime!

We embarked on an incredible Southeast Asia trip on January 13th. Our Destination expert Dev Jai helped us to plan this trip of a lifetime. Dev was excellent in making sure that we enjoyed every day. When we were delayed in Chicago due our plane hitting another plane on the runaway, he and the whole Kensington team went above and beyond to make sure we got to Hanoi as soon as possible. He arranged a room for us at the Sofitel to freshen up before we headed to Halong Bay 3 hours after we arrived. He graciously left us each a beautiful silk as a welcome gift. He designed the trip so that we were able to experience all the highlights of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand: Angkor Wat, Meekong Delta, Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, Bangkok just to name a few of our stops. This is my second trip with Kensington and would recommend them to everyone. Much thanks to Dev, our country guides and the whole team. Pamela Sawyer and Anne Matthews

Date of experience : January 13, 2024

Dear Pamela & Anne, Thank you for taking the time to write us your review. We are so happy to read it was incredible, and that Dev helped you achieve a trip of a lifetime. We know how life changing travel can be! We are excited that you are recommending Kensington Tours. We look forward to the next time we get to plan a trip for you. First time working with this company and cannot recommend them enough. John Dawson was my agent, and he was such a pleasure to work with. Super patient, extremely knowledgeable, goes above and beyond to make it happen and was always available to me, even on vacation. The quickest replies I ever received. My clients raved about their trip and complemented me, which in reality all the credit goes to Kensington tours. 5*****

Thank you for a memorable trip

Russel, My wife and I just returned home from our Kensington trip to SE Asia and Dubai. I wanted to let you know everything was fantastic, and we’re very happy with how everything went so smoothly. We loved the hotels/ resorts Kensington booked us into, and the guides and drivers were top notch. In addition we were overwhelmed with how smoothly Kensington representatives welcomed us at each airport we flew into and assisted us with sailing through customs and immigration of the various countries we visited. Without Kensington assistance some of the airport logistics would have been challenging, but it was a breeze with Kensington. I can’t tell you how many times our escorts got us through the airport with ease while other passengers were stuck in immigration and customs. The combination of the rooms, guides, drivers, tours, and airport assistance was more than we could have imagined, and it truly made us feel like VIP’s. This was our first tour using Kensington, and based on the results we are looking forward to using Kensington for future travel. We would heartily recommend Kensington to friends of ours for their future travel plans, and we are so glad to have found such a wonderful partner like Kensington for our future trips. Kensington was A+ for us, and the itinerary you put together for us and the experiences we encountered were truly memorable. It was a trip of a lifetime to a part of the world we had never visited before. Thank you Russel for making our travel dreams come true. If our Kensington booked Alaska trip this September matches this trip we will be ecstatic. You’ve raised the bar to a high level for all future trips. Bob

Date of experience : February 26, 2024

Dear Bob, We thank you so much for taking the time to review your experience. We are so glad Russell delivered a truly memorable trip of a lifetime. It is wonderful to read our drivers and local partners were helpful and top notch. The people really make a difference when in a new place! We are very much looking forward to helping you with future travel experiences. Sincerely, - The Team at Kensington Tours

If I could give them a 0 or subzero I would. Once the sales folks get you to book and are super responsive throughout the process occurs. Try getting any additional support regarding your trip - no existent. All promises and no delivery. Sent an email to the company and they ultimately responded telling me to contact the marketing department regarding my concerns. Can't you forward the email to your own marketing department. It is now two weeks since my original email and no response. My "sales" consultant doesn't follow through on any of her timeframes. Waiting two weeks now for any type of response. My trip is two months away and I am concerned. Don't use this company- they are the worst

Date of experience : August 10, 2023

Hello Jeff, We are truly sorry to hear about your negative experience with our company. Your feedback is important to us, and I apologize for any communication or support issues you've encountered. This is not the level of service we strive to provide. We understand your frustration and concerns about your upcoming trip. Rest assured, I'm here to assist you in any way I can. Please provide us with your booking details and concerns at [email protected], and we will address them promptly. Your satisfaction is important to us, and we will work to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention, and we are committed to helping resolve them to your satisfaction. -The Team at Kensington Tours

Crazy Rich Asians Tour – Singapore’s Ultra Wealthy Neighbourhoods, Homes & Film Locations

If you’ve ever read the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan, or watched the 2018 Crazy Rich Asians movie, you might imagine Singapore as an extremely affluent and ostentatious country full of extremely affluent and ostentatious people.

Although modern Singapore’s rapid economic growth and high quality of life are no secret, international tourists usually experience a very different Singapore to the one portrayed in the books and movie. Ordinary Singaporeans typically present a humble, conservative and down to earth demeanour, and reside in modest government-subsidised apartments. They most certainly do not have broad British accents.

Sure, there’s a fair number of Ferraris and Porsches driving on the roads, high rises as far as the eye can see, and more designer shops than you can visit in a lifetime, but local Singaporeans can’t be that crazy rich, can they?

Either the books and movie got Singapore completely wrong, or there’s a secret side to Singapore that tourists don’t see.

That’s what I hoped to uncover when I booked a Crazy Rich Asians tour through Tours by Locals.

kensington tours singapore

About the Tour

The Crazy Rich Asians tour is a 4-hour driving jaunt, with guide Phil, doubling as the resident chauffeur. We were collected from our downtown hotel and whisked away into the crazy rich neighbourhoods portrayed in the books and movie .

kensington tours singapore

Phil is a 4 th generation Singaporean and knows the island nation inside out. Even so, he said hosting the Crazy Rich Asians tour is like going on a treasure hunt within his own country, using clues hidden inside Kevin Kwan’s hilarious story to uncover hangouts, restaurants, streets, buildings and accommodations usually reserved for the ultra-wealthy.

Since the Crazy Rich Asians movie release in 2018, demand for the tour has gone through the roof. To cater to movie buffs like me, who haven’t read the books, Phil changed up his itinerary and now includes attractions like Marina Bay Sands and the Supertree Grove, which feature in the movie but not in the books.

Most of the tour was spent in the car driving to areas just outside of the city center but there are enough stops to get out and stretch your legs. Of course, Crazy Rich Asians love their air-conditioned cars to escape Singapore’s heat and humidity, and we were no different.

kensington tours singapore

Are there Really Crazy Rich Asians in Singapore?

Believe it or not, Singapore has the largest concentration of millionaires in the world, but this elite class only makes up 1% of the population. It’s no surprise that tourists can spend a week or two in Singapore without seeing a single sign of this extreme wealth.

Drive along the streets of wealthier neighbourhoods, like Dempsey Hill, however, and it’s a completely different story. I got the feeling that even though Kevin Kwan’s characters are fictional, the lifestyles and personalities he portrayed are completely real.

One of the first houses we drove past had not 1 but 5 red Ferraris parked out the front as well as a Lamborghini Reventon roadster, 1 of only 21 in the world and 3 in Singapore. Phil said the owner, an electronics manufacturer, opens his grandiose home every Chinese New Year so locals can admire his new possessions, many of which are rare collector items like the Lamborghini.

It’s no surprise that Kevin Kwan painted such an accurate picture of the lavish lifestyles of Singapore’s elite, since he grew up in one of these wealthy neighbourhoods himself.

Phil said the books hold a few clues about the people or families Kwan may have had in mind when crafting his characters. Savvy Singaporeans can spot them out if they know what to look for.

kensington tours singapore

There’s Crazy Rich Homes too

The mansions in the Crazy Rich Asians movie would be ridiculously expensive anywhere in the world, let alone on the small island of Singapore where land is in high demand and priced at a premium.

With that in mind, I was quite surprised to discover almost every home in Kevin Kwan’s books is based on a real Singaporean home.

We stopped by the house filmed as Peik Lin Goh’s family home in the movie. It’s is currently up for rent and Phil expects it will bring in $30-45k per month for it’s owner. That’s not because the movie made it famous, that’s just what houses cost in Dempsey Hill.

kensington tours singapore

Next, we stopped by the “star trek house”, which is where the book places Eleanor Young’s bible study groups. The house is not like any other on the street and is unmistakably the “sprawling glass and steel structure” described in the novel, but I thought it looked more like a nightclub than a home!

kensington tours singapore

The only house that may not be based on a real home is Ah Ma’s house, make that a palace. Those scenes were filmed in Malaysia for the movie, but Phil has a few suspicions of which house Kwan had in mind when writing about Nick Young’s childhood home. He pointed them out as we drove by.

According to Phil, houses around Dempsey Hill (just one of Singapore’s prestigious neighbourhoods) sell for between $20 million and $300 million while a plot of land recently sold for $90 million.

As if that’s not crazy rich enough, some residents own multiple properties in the same area and either lease them or let their extended families live in them.

Singapore travel tip: Explore Malaysia from Singapore... find discount bus tickets to Malacca , Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highland .

What about Crazy Rich Attractions?

Despite the flashy cars and homes, Singapore’s elite actually like to be discreet about their wealth. It’s not uncommon to find them in unsuspecting t-shirts and slippers enjoying a $3 meal at a hawker’s marker. Just like Nick and Colin did in the movie.

The next stop on our tour was the Newton Food Centre, the hawker’s market from the movie. We arrived at 4pm so many food vendors weren’t open yet, but I managed to find a tasty fresh fruit juice and a plate of popiah, my favourite Singaporean meal.

Sadly, Phil said hugging stall owners like Nick does in the movie is a cultural faux pas, so I didn’t try to re-enact that scene.

kensington tours singapore

Another recognisable scene from the movie was CHIJMES, where Colin and Araminta’s wedding ceremony was filmed. CHIJMES is no longer an actual church but used as a function hall, primarily for weddings, but without water flowing down the aisle.

What you don’t see in the movie is that just behind the church you’ll find a trendy dining complex with taverns, restaurants, bars, and a grassed area with bean bags. We didn’t have time to stop for a drink on our tour, but it’s definitely worth coming back to this hip, laid back area in your own time.

kensington tours singapore

Seeing the complex up close let me understand the scale of the shutdown required to film the wedding scene at CHIJMES. On a sidenote, Phil mentioned that all of the scenes shot in Singapore were filmed in only one week! The rest of the movie was filmed in Malaysia.

kensington tours singapore

Since the tour is somewhat customisable, Phil can take his guests to other attractions that feature in the movie and books, like Marina Bay Sands, the Supertree Grove, and the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

I’d already seen these before my tour, so Phil decided to show me more of the finer things reserved for Singapore’s elite.

kensington tours singapore

We visited (only on the outside) private country clubs and gentlemen’s clubs, a condominium with an elevator for cars, and my favourite, a giant vending machine full of luxury cars. Yes, you read that correctly.

The multilevel garage houses dozens of Porches, Mercedes, Range Rovers, and the likes, all stacked on top of each other on mechanical floors. Buyers select the make, model and colour they want to view on an iPad at ground level and the car is brought down to spin in front of them for a 360° view.

If the buyer likes what they see, they wire the funds then and there and drive off in their brand-new sports car.

Singapore is one of the most expensive countries to own a car since owners must pay a hefty licence on top of the purchase price (which is more than 2 times higher than other countries), and the licence is only valid for 10 years.

Taking all of that into consideration, you get an understanding of the kind of customer who’d want to, and be able to, purchase a sports car from a giant vending machine.

kensington tours singapore

The Bottom Line

To the unsuspecting tourist, Singapore may appear to be just like any other modern, innovative, and prosperous city, but don’t fooled. Singapore has hidden class of crazy rich elites.

If you’ve visited Singapore before, or perhaps have a spare day up your sleeve, I highly recommend going on this Crazy Rich Asians tour . You’ll discover a side of Singapore unknown to the average visitor and out of reach to the average human.

Even if it’s for only one day, you can be a Crazy Rich Asian too.

Feeling inspired? Read the books (Kindle version available) and watch the movie online .

Reader Comments...

Your guide didn't read the book. The book clearly put the Young estate by the Botanic Gardens on Tyersall Ave. The estate is called Tyersall Park. You can see the huge green space and Tyersall Ave on Google Earth. There's an abandoned palace (Istana Woodneuk) owned by a Malaysian prince in the middle. That's the inspiration for Tyersall Park. Bloomberg recently has an article about this place. It says the land is zoned as green space reserve. If the land is allowed to be developed, it will be valued $3.5 billions due to its size and location. Another mistake he made is Eleanor's house. That house is in Malaysia.

Hi Jassy, This is Phil, the guide for the CRA Fan Tour. I have been doing the tours since 2014 and have read all the books several times. :) During our tour, we always start with going by Tyersall Avenue and sharing the story of Istana Tyersall and the parties held there before it was eventually destroyed by fire. In the film, Eleanor's house is filmed in Malaysia for the bible study scene. However, if you are a fan of the book, you will know that the bible studies are held at Carol Tai's mansion called the "Star Trek House" and not at Eleanor's. Eleanor's house in the book is a penthouse along Cairnhill road and we do drive by that location during the tour! If you ever find yourself in Singapore, do come on the tour and we can spend a day sharing the CRA world! :)

Hello Phil. Can you quote us for a tour for 4 adults on Thursday 30 June or Friday 1 July pls.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Kensington Tours?

Young woman traveling with Kensington Tours

As opposed to Abercrombie & Kent, which whom they are often compared, Kensington has a more youthful focus, less obviously geared toward older travelers. That said they are a recognizable name among the 55+ crowd and their primary traveler, simply by default of the budget range does tend to be older.

Top Destinations

Kensington operates tours around the world, utilizing local accommodation, and diving into the local culture. Knowledgeable and passionate destination experts are on hand to help bring the destination to life.

Lion cubs yawning Kensington tours African safari

They are well known for their Africa tours and safaris, which travel throughout the most popular safari destinations, as well as farther afield. In addition, Kensington tours also operate trips in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and South America. They also have cruise departures to Antarctica!

Kensington Tours Travel Style

Kensington certainly ascribes to the notion that “luxury” does not mean “stiff” or require that you stick to 5 star resorts. Rather it’s a style of travel that allows you to see the world on a deeper, extremely personal level - in safety, comfort, with a guide who becomes like a friend helping reveal small nuances that bring each destination to life in a new way.

Mountain lodge luxury accommodation Kensington Tours

Think luxury eco lodges in the heart of Central America, a yacht down the Amazon, 5 star safari lodges where you can sip champagne looking out over the savannah. Transportation is in luxury coaches, comfortable safari jeeps, hot air balloons, river cruises etc.

The Kensington travel perspective is not to book a tour - but to craft an unforgettable experience.

They have many travel styles including Safaris, which they are especially known for, river cruises, and family trips.

Safaris with Kensington Tours - Enjoy the “fabled” African safari experience when you travel with Kensington Tours in Africa. Active Adventures - True to their outlook on travel, Kensington combines the best of luxury with active adventure. This means whitewater rafting, hiking in Wales, or waterfall rappelling. A day full of activity followed by a well deserved cocktail in the sunset. Kensington adventure tours are offered in a variety of physical levels and are intended for beginners all the way up to hard core experienced adventure travelers.

Family tours with Kensington - Sometimes it can be hard traveling with young ones because not all activities are open to them, and age restrictions cause an unbalanced experience. So Kensington has several family tours designed for a variety of ages. Most feature a stay at one hotel or on a cruise, allowing you to unpack only once and relax into the travel experience.

Festivals & Events - Year round there are spectacular festivals and events held around the world - with countless niches and meanings. You could take in the fun of Oktoberfest, or the brightly colored Carnival in Rio, or the Tulip Festival in Holland. These events are often crowded, very busy, and can be difficult to navigate. TORONTO — Kensington Tours is expanding is ‘Voyages by Kensington Tours’ product line to Central Americaand Asia.

According to Joelle Davis, Vice President of Cruise, the expansion is in response to increased demand, with the line quickly becoming a preferred choice for immersive trips that blend both cruising and land exploration with bespoke, private guided experiences on land, either before or after the cruise.

“We are thrilled to broaden our Voyages offerings with the introduction of vibrant, new itineraries to Central America that afford an exceptional blend of land and river or ocean travel for a comprehensive exploration of these regions as well as new ways to explore Asia where demand is surging,” stated Davis. “These trips reflect the interest and demand from clients who want to merge the ease of cruising with the depth of private-guided land tours.”

Voyages by Kensington Tours includes partnerships with luxury ocean cruise lines including Atlas Ocean Voyages, Celebrity, Explora Journeys, Seabourn and Silversea as well as river cruise companies including Avalon Waterways, AmaWaterways, Scenic, Emerald Cruises, Sanctuary Cruises, and VIVA Cruises.

The new Central America itineraries include the following:

  • A cruise to Colombia and Panama that navigates the waters of the Magdalena River, complemented by land excursions that include a day spent in Panama, learning about the Panama Canal’s construction, and a private food tour of Medellin.
  • A voyage through the Panama Canal to Peru , offering exclusive insights into Lima’s vibrant culture, the beauty of the Sacred Valley and the awe-inspiring landscapes of Machu Picchu, all through private guided tours.
  • A journey aboard a premium yacht cruise liner through the Panama Canal to Costa Rica , designed to provide an extended pre-cruise opportunity to immerse in local culinary traditions and the region’s rich biodiversity. Guests can experience wildlife encounters while following the sloth trail and with a visit to the Wildlife Rescue Center.

The new Asia itineraries include Singapore to Bangkok with Silversea; Vietnam and Thailand with Celebrity; and river cruises with AmaWaterways along the Mekong with stops in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and with Avalon cruises through Thailand and Vietnam.

The expansion also includes other sought-after routes, such as Antarctica, where clients can pair their cruise with immersive private guided tours in Argentina or Patagonia, and in Europe.

The demand for pairing more exclusive experiences with cruises also inspired the launch of Kensington Tours private guided shore excursions that feature a v ariety of enriching experiences such as historical explorations, cultural immersion, active adventures, and culinary journeys in more than 165 global ports.
