Ilaveezha Poonchira is a majestic valley located along the Pala-Thodupuzha Highway in the borders of Kottayam district in Kerala that spreads across thousands of acres. This beautiful tourist spot is surrounded by mesmerising hills of different heights. Some of the hills are even 3200 feet above sea level. Ilaveezha Poonchira is a Malayalam word which means ‘a flowery lake where no leaves fall’. Since there are no trees on the mountaintops, leaves do not fall into this captivating valley. The green expanse and rocky hills of this destination span for many kilometres without any trees. You will feel that Ilaveezha Poonchira is Kerala’s hidden treasure once you watch the serene and enchanting beauty of this weekend getaway.

Like many other places in the state, Ilaveezha Poonchira is also associated with a legend. It is believed that Draupadi used to take bath in the lake of Ilaveezha Poonchira when Pandavas were in exile. The matchless beauty of Draupadi attracted Devas and they watch her secretly taking bath. So, Devendra, the lord of Devas, created three hillocks, Kudayathurmala, Mankunnu and Thonippara in order to protect her from the prying eyes of them. The charm of this tempting region is unparalleled and provides you mesmeric views of both sunrise and sunset. Ilaveezha Poonchira is nothing short of a paradise, especially during the monsoon months. The best time to visit this area is from November to March. Travellers who wish to stay in this destination can take advantage of the DTPC rest house.

All You Need To Know About Planning A 6-Day Budget Trip To Kerala

Photo of Tripoto

A budget Kerala Itinerary doesn't have to be compromising on anything. Its sublime backwaters and lofty hills, generously open up experiences and views that no one could put a price–tag on. Like being greeted by a swarm of migratory birds at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, strolling through its spice gardens, beginning your mornings with the refreshing breeze from the tea plantations, listening to its gushing waterfalls and watching a traditional boat race.

Travelling through Kerala is about experiencing rare luxuries – of having lived by the river, on a tree house, amidst hills, by the port, of having eaten the unforgettable South Indian breakfast or the spicy fish curry, of having experienced the adventure at Periyar or a relaxed day at an Ayurvedic spa. Here's all you need to plan a budget trip to Kerala .

Reaching Kerala and Getting Around

Kerala has 3 airports: Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Calicut. Budget airlines fly to Kochi and Thiruvanathapuram, making flying an accessible option for backpackers. The rail network is also well established with over 200 railway stations. National Highways connecting Kerala to other states ease road travel. Plenty of Kerala tourism buses, cars and taxis link the various districts well. Private taxis cost from 1200 to 3000 INR per day, depending on the capacity of the car and air–conditioning. Since Kerala has a number of water bodies, motorboats and ordinary boats can also be used as transport. Tickets for all state operated modes of transport would need to be booked in advance and will cost between 20 to 100 INR per person depending on the type of vehicle and distance.

Best time to visit Kerala

Monsoon and winter are the best seasons to visit Kerala because the summer renders the whole of South India humid. Kerala’s lush greenery can be enjoyed at its pinnacle during the monsoon. Also, numerous carnivals and boat races happen from the months of September to March, that makes it the best time to visit the state.

The cost estimate of the trip would be 15,000 to 25,000 INR per person. Here's a six day itinerary to help you plan your escape.

Start your journey in Thekkady

Kochi is the closest airport to Thekkady is one chooses to fly to Kerala. Kottayam is closest railway station. Here's what you shouldn't miss out on in Thekkady:

Periyar National Park

Visit the Periyar National Park which boasts of a rich biodiversity and wondrous scenery. Enjoy views of the Western Ghats as well as surrounding river valleys and lakes. It is one of India’s 27 tiger reserves in addition to being an elephant reserve. There are 35 species of animals in the park, many of which are endangered. Take a guided trekking trip in the reserve and get to see it intimately.

Also, visit a spice plantation if you can. There are a number of plantations within a 5 km radius of Thekaddy.

2. Spice Garden – Surrounded by spice plantations, the reason for the name of this restaurant isn’t such a surprise. The freshly made Indian food served here is the main USP.

Head to Kumarakoram for 2 Days

Located about 140 kms west of Thekkady, Kumarakom is set around the Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Kerala. Reaching Kumarakom from Thekkady shouldn’t take more than 4 hours by bus or train.

If you are here in January, don’t miss your chance to watch the Kumarakom Boat race which happens around Onam every year. The marvellous coordination of 50-odd men to reach the finish line first will most definitely be a jaw-dropping event to remember! Here's what else to do in Kumarakoram.

Back waters at Kumarakom

Take a cruise in one of the boats in the Kumarakom backwaters. Ordinary boats serve the purpose better because they make lesser noise.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary should definitely be on your Kerala itinerary to spot rare migratory birds such as the Serbian crane, the heron and the egret.

Eravikulam National Park

Make sure to take a trip to the Eravikulam National Park to watch the bloom of Neelakurinji flowers which happens once every 12 years. Tickets to enter the park are 55 INR per adult and the park remains shut in February and March.

Hire and ride bicycles on the winding hilly roads in Munnar. The wind in your hair will make you feel freedom like nothing else.

Head to an Ayurvedic spa to get a rejuvenating Ayurvedic massage, Kerala style. It should cost between 1500 to 3000 INR per person depending on the massage package you opt for.

Athirapally Waterfalls

Head to thrissur for a day.

The zenith of this Kerala trip might just come on the last day of this holiday. Spend the entire day at the Athirapally waterfalls to take in the magnificence of nature. Visiting the waterfalls in the monsoon would be better. The flora and fauna of the area are serious attention grabbers.

Getting out of Thrissur

After your last day in Kerala, it's time to head back. The railway station in Thrissur connects to rest of Kerala's rail infrastructure and to other cities around the country. The nearest airport is in Kochi, which is an hour away by road.

We hope you enjoy your Kerala trip as much as we enjoyed designing this Kerala itinerary for you!

Southern India Tour with Beaches and Houseboat Experience

I have Experience for southern India that included visits to several beautiful beaches and a unique houseboat experience. It was an unforgettable journey that allowed me to experience the diverse culture, history, and natural beauty of this region. The tour started in the bustling city of Chennai, where I was immediately immersed in the vibrant atmosphere and rich history of the city. From there, we traveled to the quaint town of Mamallapuram, known for its ancient temples and rock-cut monuments. The beaches in this area were breathtaking, with pristine white sand and clear blue waters. I spent hours simply relaxing and taking in the stunning views. Next, we made our way to the famous city of Puducherry, a former French colony that still retains much of its colonial charm. The beaches here were quieter and more secluded, offering a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. I especially enjoyed the French Quarter, with its colorful buildings and charming cafes. One of the highlights of the tour was the houseboat experience in the backwaters of Kerala. I had never stayed on a houseboat before, and it was a truly unique and memorable experience. The serene backwaters were like a different world, and I was able to see the daily life of the locals living along the waterways. The food served on the houseboat was also delicious, with a variety of traditional South Indian dishes. We also visited the famous beaches of Kovalam and Varkala, both known for their stunning cliffs and pristine beaches. I couldn't resist taking a dip in the warm waters and soaking up the sun on the sandy shores. The views from the cliffs were also breathtaking, especially during sunset. The tour ended in the beautiful city of Kochi, where I got to explore the historic Fort Kochi area and its charming streets lined with Dutch and Portuguese colonial buildings. The beaches in this area were also stunning, with a mix of sandy shores and rocky formations. Overall, my southern India tour with beaches and houseboat experience was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. The tour was well-organized, and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the diverse and mesmerizing region of southern India. The combination of beaches, cultural experiences, and the unique houseboat stay made it an unforgettable journey that I will always cherish.

We had 17 days in Southern India in May 2017 with Gets Holidays. We were extremely happy with the drivers, our itinerary and our 4 star hotels (always with breakfast). Our internal flight was organised by Gets, and our special requests to find grandparents graves and my husbands birth hospital in Pune were met.(he was a British subject) Both our drivers Suneer around Kerala, and Shaikm from Pune to Mumbai were professional, cheerful, very clean with well presented vehicle and always available to do anything we wanted. But the itinerary was very comprehensive, so we did not have to do much planning ourselves. I wanted to see the Dabbawallas (lunch people) in Mumbai..so this was included at the last minute. We had excellent local guides (except for one who was a last minute stand-in)..some that come to mind are Daryani in Mumbai, Shaji in Coochin ,Daya in Pune, Taj (what a character) in Kerala, and of course Suneer our driver in the south spoke wonderful English, and completed our knowledge as we drove. We are from Australia, and found by emailing and skyping we could plan our Indian holiday with Gets. Everything went to plan when we arrived, and as a personal touch Ritu rang most days to check all was going to plan. We had no problems at all. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE. The tea plantations high up in the mountains, the overnight on a Rice Boat, the spice farm, a train ride with the locals for $2,the Mysore Palace (esp at night),the Mysore Zoo are just a few of many 3500 photos I took.

It was an enjoyable experience. The tour covered a variety of different places from city, mountains, nature, water and seaside. We couldn’t have done the trip ourselves without organisation. The standard of accommodation was generally quite good although the food in the hotels when we had dinner wasn’t as good as we found by going outside and finding local restaurants.

Our journey began in the bustling city of Chennai, where we were immediately immersed in the vibrant energy and rich history of South India. We visited iconic landmarks such as the Kapaleeshwarar Temple and the Marina Beach, the second longest urban beach in the world. The city's mix of modernity and tradition was evident in its bustling markets, ancient temples, and colonial-era buildings. From Chennai, we made our way to Mahabalipuram, a small coastal town known for its ancient rock-cut temples and stunning beaches. We spent a few days exploring the intricately carved monuments and relaxing on the golden sands of the beach. The highlight of our stay in Mahabalipuram was watching the sunset over the Bay of Bengal, a truly breathtaking sight. Next, we headed to Pondicherry, a former French colony that still retains its colonial charm. The quaint streets lined with French-style buildings, along with the serene beaches, made for a picturesque setting. We also had the chance to visit Auroville, an experimental township where people of different nationalities and cultures live together in harmony. The highlight of our trip was the houseboat experience in the backwaters of Kerala. We boarded a traditional houseboat and cruised through the tranquil backwaters, surrounded by lush greenery and local villages. It was a peaceful and unique experience, and we were able to witness the daily life of the locals living along the waterways. Our journey ended in Goa, a popular beach destination known for its laid-back vibe and beautiful beaches. We spent our days soaking up the sun on the pristine beaches, trying out water sports, and indulging in delicious seafood. We also explored the charming Portuguese-influenced old town of Panjim and visited the famous Basilica of Bom Jesus. my Southern India tour with beaches and a houseboat experience was a perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation. I was able to see the diverse landscapes of South India, from bustling cities to serene backwaters and stunning beaches. The warm hospitality of the locals, the delicious cuisine, and the rich cultural heritage of the region made this trip truly unforgettable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and enriching travel experience in India.
