Hiking holidays Kesch Trek
Eurotrek alpine: kesch trek, pretty steep.
The Piz Kesch is one impressive mountain. All around it there are no comparable peaks and so it dominates the panoramic view of the region with its pitch-black wall, which reaches into the sky behind the Kesch Mountain Cabin. Thus, it is unsurprising that this mountain has been ennobled with its very own long-distance hiking tour.
Its highest mountain pass is de Fuorcla da Pischa, which lies at roughly 2'800 meters, however the other crossings are also physically demanding. Luckily, friendly hosts and charming SAC huts await you at the end of each daily trek. The KESCH trek is not a hike for beginners and pretty steep. It definitely does its eponymous mountain peak justice in every aspect.

Arrival in Landquart | Flüela Pass – Chamanna da Grialetsch SAC
Arrival in Landquart and luggage drop-off. Onward journey to Davos and bus ride to the Flüela Pass. From here on you will hike to the SAC hut “Chamanna da Grialetsch”. Its picturesque location offers views of the glaciers the glaciers Vadret Vallorgia, Vadret da Grialetsch and Vadret da Sasura.
Chamanna da Grialetsch SAC – Kesch-Hütte SAC
On this day you will hike over the Scaletta Pass. On your way to the SAC hut “Kesch-Hütte” enjoy a short detour, which takes you to the two Alpine lakes Ravais-ch Sout and Lai da Ravais-ch. They lie in a small valley beneath the mighty Piz Murtelet Sur. In the evening the Kesch-Hütte awaits you with good food, warmth and overall cosiness.
Kesch-Hütte SAC – Chamanna d’Es-cha SAC
From the Kesch-Hütte you will first descend to the Alp digl Chant. Here you can fortify yourself with local delicacies like yoghurt, Alpine cheeses, and milk. Afterwards you continue on the steep ascent up to the Fuorcla Pischa.
After another descent you will reach the SAC hut “Chamanna d’Es-cha”. The parlour with its richly stucco decorated ceiling is unique for a SAC hut. Recharge with a portion of well-earned barley soup or with a homemade Engadinian walnut tart.
Chamanna d’Es-cha SAC – Bergün
The last day of the Kesch trek will take you from the Chamanna d’Es-cha hut back to the valley. On your way the varying views of green mountain pastures and rugged peaks accompany your descent. A highlight of this leg of the tour is the sparkling lake, Lai da Palpuogna.
Finally, the route takes you through forests and meadows to Bergün. Throughout your journey on this day the Albula Railway track, which is renowned for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, weaves its way across your path.

Want to go on a traditional trekking adventure brimmed with snow-capped mountains, secluded trails, vibrant meadows, and gravel-stone paths? The Alps have hosted willing and daring hikers for a very long time. Thanks to its vast coverage, it's a popular destination for Europeans and international travellers, standing lustfully in the backdrop of France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria (and Slovenia, Liechtenstein). It's easy to pop into the mountains to view a lake, go on a day hike, ski, or mountain bike, but one of the best ways to revel in the natural surroundings is to go on a multi-day trek.
Before trekking in the Alps, it's vital to know that snow can linger late into June and may unpredictably shower the green meadows into July! But, at lower altitudes, you'll feel the true sizzle of the European summer sun, making it hard to know what to pack for your trek.
It's best to bring lightweight layers to support all weather conditions. If you're hanging out on trails closer to cityscapes and away from the snow-capped peaks, you won't need to be as strategic with what to stuff into your bag.
As you can predict, it's best to hike during the summer! Most of our treks below suggest going from June to September, but even June might be too early for some places due to slippery, stubborn snow.
Lastly, thanks to the popularity of the mountain range, most trails are well-marked. Do we still recommend studying your route and downloading a GPS before you set foot on the path? 100 percent!
With all that said, take a look at some of our favourite trekking routes in the Alps below.
Let's kick off our best treks in the Alps article with the well-known and arguably one of the most incredible multi-day hikes on the planet: Tour du Mont Blanc. On this trek, you'll traverse France, Italy, and Switzerland, passing glaciers, meadows, and peaks. Your legs will hurt as you travel approximately 15.0 km a day, but your eyes feasting on the delicious scenery will force you to forget all about your tired limbs. One thing to note: the Tour du Mont Blanc doesn't climb the Mont Blanc Massif but circumnavigates it! Location: Starts and ends in Les Houches Distance: 170.0 km Time: 8-11 days When to do: June-September
Seeking drama? Turn off the reality shows on Netflix and instead lace up your boats and head to the Dolomites, where the dramatic scenery will sweep you into another world. If you're new to trekking, the Alta Via 1 is a great route! First, the natural highlights—alpine lakes, grassy valleys contrasted with rocky slopes, and peaks on peaks—make for an epic first multi-day venture deep into the mountains. Second, you won't have to worry about too many underfoot technicalities. And third, like most hikes in the Alps, the trail is easy to follow!
Side note: If you’d prefer following an expert for your first time, check this guided tour out . Location: Lago di Braies to La Pissa Bus Stop (Val Cordevole) Distance: 120.0 km Time: 8-10 days When to do: June 15 to late September
The Eagle Walk will win over anyone searching for rugged mountain scenery accentuated by lustful greenery and long-winded, challenging daily excursions. This walk isn't an in-and-out adventure, either. Spanning 413km, you can conquer one of two sections—or both if you're one of the brave ones. One section traverses 24 stages, while the other tackles nine. The total kilometres across both sections amounts to 413! Location: St. Johann to St. Christoph am Arlberg Distance: 413.0 km Time: 24-33 days When to do: Mid-June to end of August
Why go up the Matterhorn when you can spend 145km orbiting the iconic peak, admiring it every step of the journey? But the Matterhorn won't be all that intoxicates your gaze on this rustic trek. Cross glaciers and drop your jaw at other lofty peaks! You'll also cross into Italy, allowing you to enjoy the lip-smacking, world-famous Italian cuisine. Location: Begins and ends in Zermatt, Switzerland Distance: 145.0 km Time: 8-10 days When to do: June to September
Tackle Germany to Italy on this entertaining route! The Trans-Alpine Crossing makes it easy to lose yourself in the whirls and hums of nature, thanks to the inspiring, ever-changing scenery. Discover lakes, valleys, mountain views, forests, and alpine meadows, with a fusion of storied history throughout. Location: Gmund, Germany to Sterzing, Italy Distance: 110.0 km Time: 7 days When to do: June to September
The upside of trekking through Switzerland? It's stunning. The downside? The cost. Prices soar once you set foot on Swiss soil! Note that the Walker's Haute Route starts from France but travels mainly in Switzerland. So be prepared to drop some cash! But there's always the option to take public transport or alternative routes if you need more money or time to complete some sections! Location: Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland Distance: 213.0 km Time: 10 to 12 days When to do: Mid-July to mid-September
The epic Stubai High Trail crosses the Alps along a strenuous trail not meant for the faint of heart or even the eager beginner. Naturally, the rewards come in spades throughout this incredible journey: quintessential stunning outdoorsy scenery and warm meals at the eight huts along the way. Location: Starkenburger Hütte to Innsbrucker Hütte Distance: 78.0 km Time: 7 days When to do: July to September
What's the difference between Alta Via 1 and Alta Via 2? If you want a more challenging route, set foot on Alta Via 2. Expect to crunch in around 12,500 m of ascent into your two-week journey! Alta Via 2 traverses south of Aosta Valley, cutting through the ever-so-memorable Gran Paradiso National Park. Location: Bressanone (Brixen) to Croce d’Aune Distance: 160.0 km Time: 11-14 days When to do: mid-June to September
Only a handful of people want to spend their yearly two-week vacation on a trek! But five days? That seems more reasonable! The Tour du Mont Thabor trek is an excellent route for anyone with limited time. On this route, you'll steer away from the crowds and trek through a wild, secluded landscape, where the unspoiled scenery of the French Alps brings a type of peace you can't find along the more popular routes. Location: Starts and ends in Nevache Distance: 85.0 km Time: 5 days When to do: June to October
The Kesch Trek in Switzerland is a fantastic multi-day trek for beginners! And don't worry about the shortened days on the trail compared to the rest of the hikes on this list, as the Kesch Trek has a knack for packing a grande punch. Experience the archetypal imagery of the Alps in just four unforgettable days. While this multi-day excursion is suitable for beginners, it's important to note that it still poses challenges, such as the tough ascent on day 3! The weather can also cause slick, dangerous conditions, so check the weather before you go. Location: Flüela Pass bus stop to Bergün Distance: 59.0 km Time: 4 days When to do: mid-June to September

Trekking type, hut hike switzerland: the 4 best options, by sierd van der bij.
Are you looking for mountains, endless trails, and the most hospitable mountain huts? Check. A hiking vacation in the Alps doesn't get better than a hut-to-hut tour in Switzerland. Switzerland is 70% mountainous, and mountain sports were more or less invented there. While vacations in Switzerland are sometimes considered expensive, a hut-to-hut hike in Switzerland
The trails are well-marked, well-maintained, and connected through hundreds of villages, hamlets, inns, and mountain huts where hikers can find clean, comfortable, and beautifully located accommodations. You can hike for days without descending, but you need to know where to start. Which hut tour, where do you begin, and how do you book it? "Booking a hut-to-hut tour in the Alps can be a challenge," says Bookatrekking.com trekking expert Natascha. "Sometimes you really don't know where to start. Every year, we help hundreds of hikers find and organize their hut-to-hut tour."
A Week on the Bernina Trek
Short and sweet: the kesch trek, switzerland for beginners: bear trek, more than just switzerland: tour du mont blanc, maybe better: walker's haute route, two countries: tour des combins, bit different: tour des muverans, to the source: vier quellen weg, safe hut-to-hut trekking in switzerland, weather on a hut tour in the alps, where can i book my walking holiday in switzerland.
"You have to plan some time for it, and it's not that easy, but the Bernina Trek definitely has its charm," says Sierd. "It's a bit like a Kesch Trek but with muscles." More about the Kesch later. The Bernina Trek of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) not only passes by all the mountain huts of SAC Bernina but also through a breathtaking Alpine world: from the Albula Valley with Piz Kesch and the UNESCO World Heritage stretch of the Rhaetian Railway to the sublime Julier region with its impressive geological rock formations, and on to the Bernina region with the proud peaks of Piz Palü, Piz Moteratsch, and Piz Bernina, finally reaching the unique Italianità of the lovely Poschiavo.
The "Classic" route takes you through a magnificent Alpine landscape for seven days, passing by deep blue mountain lakes, icy glacier streams, and snow-capped peaks. For those seeking or needing more excitement, there's the "Summiteer" option, where the route is expanded for several peak experiences. But even families with children and groups of hikers with varying fitness levels will enjoy the beautiful mountain landscape on the "Pachific" route.
Kesch Trek in Graubünden
Kesch Trek - Including accommodation before and after
"On the Kesch Trek in 2021, we had to make do without the Grialetsch Hütte, one of the participating mountain huts on the Kesch Trek. The hut has now been renovated and is open to us" says Natascha, Area Manager for the Alps. The reopening of the Grialetsch Hütte ensures that you can conquer not only the Albula Pass but also the Flüela Pass, both well-known points near Davos in Canton Graubünden. With 'only' 4 days and 3 nights, this is a popular option for the first hiking vacation in Switzerland.
All the huts on the Kesch Trek are run by the Swiss Alpine Club, the SAC. Natascha is in close contact with this club, which has been around since 1863. "For our bookings, we always have good contact with the operators. A SAC member is appointed to look after the hut for a season. This is not only our information point but also that of the hiker. Thus, the host or hostess of the mountain hut can always give you tips or warnings," says Natascha.
In a unique area and in front of one of the most beautiful backdrops of the Alps, the long-distance trail Hintere Gasse, also known as Bärentrek, leads from Meiringen over 8 Alpine passes to Gsteig. "This is a perfect option for beginners," says Rintsje. Why? "You don't have to stay in huts. On the Bärentrek, we book hikers in mountain hotels and hostels that are entirely geared towards mountain sports."
The Bärentrek is part of the Via Alpina 1. The Via Alpina is actually a network of five long-distance trails through the Alpine regions of Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Monaco. The Swiss part of the Via Alpina is 390 kilometers long and is divided into 20 stages. You can choose whether you want to do the entire tour or just a part of it. The Bärentrek is the most popular part of the Via Alpina 1 and is perfect for a hut-to-hut tour in Switzerland. Here you can read more about the Bärentrek and find a suitable offer for a hiking vacation here .
Can't decide between a hut-to-hut tour in Italy, France, or Switzerland? The Tour du Mont Blanc is a combination of all three. It is one of the most famous hiking routes in Europe, which means you will meet people from all over the world in the huts and rifugios. "Hikers often tell us about the international character in the mountain huts. Like a backpacker hostel, but for adults," says Sierd, who has helped many people on their way. "Because the route is so well-known, the mountain huts are always well-organized. Breakfast in the morning, hot meals in the evening, it's always pleasant." Hikers typically cover the 170 kilometers of the Tour du Mont Blanc in 10 days. The traditional starting point is in Chamonix, on the French side of Mont Blanc. Sierd: "Chamonix, also called Cham, is the epicenter of mountaineering on the French side of Mont Blanc. Are you going to the French Alps or specifically to Mont Blanc? Then you go to Chamonix. That makes it a very lively small town.
The best time to do the Tour du Mont Blanc is in the summer months of July and August when the trail has little snow, and the weather is usually good. Early in the season, the passes can still be covered with snow, and then it becomes difficult. Although the season only officially starts on June 15, it doesn't mean you won't encounter snow. "On the contrary," says Sierd. "It often happens that hikers encounter old snow in the first two weeks of the season. Crossing the Fenetre d'Arpette can then be challenging." The trekking experts at Bookatrekking.com know the alternative routes and always send you with detailed directions. If you prefer not to encounter old snow, if we had to recommend a more precise period, it would be the second half of August. During these two weeks, the number of hikers and climbers is lower, and the weather is usually quite pleasant. Read more about the Tour du Mont Blanc here .

For those seeking a serene alternative to the bustling Tour du Mont Blanc, the Tour des Combins presents itself as an ideal choice. Renowned for its tranquility without compromising on breathtaking panoramas and challenging trails, this trek embarks from and concludes in Bourg Saint Pierre, a charming town nestled near the Swiss-Italian border.
Trekking expert Annemiek emphasizes the allure of the Tour des Combins , where you'll navigate around the awe-inspiring Massif des Combins, pass by expansive lakes, and traverse open fields amidst towering mountains. The highest point, Col des Otanes (2,863m / 9,393ft), promises a spectacular vantage. Spanning 7 stages, with an intensive 6-day option for seasoned hikers, the well-maintained trails belie the trek's challenges. Daily ascents and descents of up to 1000 meters, coupled with narrow sections, require a healthy respect for the journey.
Evenings bring respite in the form of snug cabanes (in Switzerland) and rifugios (in Italy), where a warm meal awaits after a day of trekking adventures. Embark on your Tour des Combins memories here.
Annemiek, our trekking expert, shares, "The Tour des Combins stands out for its peaceful ambiance, offering a unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning landscapes. It's a trek where every step unravels the beauty of the Alps, making it an unforgettable experience for those seeking a quieter yet equally rewarding adventure."
Explore the awe-inspiring Tour des Muverans , a captivating circular trek in Valais that offers diverse walking options. Covering 54 km with a total ascent and descent of 4300m, the journey demands around 23 hours of walking, navigating altitudes above 2000m, with peaks reaching over 2600m and descents to a low of 1230m.
Embark on the Tour des Muverans to encircle the majestic Grand Muveran peak, soaring above 3000m and straddling the Vaud-Valais border in Switzerland. With three starting points—Pont de Nant, Derborence, or Ovronnaz—the hike can be tackled in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. Ovronnaz, a delightful holiday and spa town known for its three 32- to 35-degree hot springs, serves as the most convenient base for this remarkable journey. Begin your Tour des Muverans adventure here.
Trek enthusiast Annemiek adds, "The Tour des Muverans offers an array of walking experiences, from challenging ascents to stunning descents, all amidst the breathtaking backdrop of Grand Muveran. It's a trek that seamlessly blends natural beauty with a variety of trails, promising an unforgettable journey for every avid walker."
The Vier-Quellen-Weg , also known as the Four Springs Trail, made its debut in Switzerland in 2012. Spanning four cantons—Uri, Graubünden, Ticino, and Valais—this trail distinguishes itself with impeccable route markings, ensuring an almost effortless journey compared to established tours like the Tour du Mont Blanc . Andermatt, conveniently reachable by car or public transport, serves as the trailhead.
Charisa, our trekking expert, highlights the allure of the Vier Quellen Weg, where you'll uncover the sources of four rivers, with the Rhine being the most prominent. While the Rhône is renowned for its wine, the Ticino merges into the Po, and the Reuss eventually reunites with the Rhine near Koblenz. En route, you'll encounter enchanting blue lakes, traverse the Gotthard Pass, and cross the Furka Pass. With 5 stages, this trek presents challenges; although children trek these paths, some sections feature technical terrain and longer stages.
Accommodations vary from mountain huts to local hotels, offering a blend of authentic hut-trekking experiences and occasional comforts. Secure your huts for the Vier-Quellen-Weg here.
Charisa, our trekking expert, notes, "The Vier-Quellen-Weg seamlessly weaves together stunning landscapes and cultural richness. Impeccable trail markings make it accessible, while the mix of technical sections and diverse accommodations ensures a memorable adventure for both seasoned trekkers and families."
When embarking on a hut-to-hut tour in the Alps, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Even if it's not your first time, never underestimate the Dolomites. To ensure your hiking vacation is a safe and enjoyable experience, our trekking experts have the following tips for you.
Don't overdo it
Hiking in the mountains is the perfect escape from everyday life. But don't overdo it. "Overestimation and underestimation are dangerous. Don't overestimate yourself, and don't underestimate the route," says Sierd, also a Kilimanjaro expert at Bookatrekking.com. "Choose the slower option and take more time for your plans. Hiking under time pressure is not pleasant, and a fast pace can be dangerous. Don't forget the word 'holiday' in 'hiking holiday'."
Plan carefully
Good planning is half the battle! Hiking maps, literature, the internet, and expert advice are invaluable in tour planning, allowing you to determine the length, altitude difference, difficulty, and conditions of your hike. If you plan group hikes, always plan the tour for the weakest member of the group! The weather in the mountains can change incredibly fast, and rain, wind, and cold increase the risk factor. Always check the weather forecast in advance. Also, consult our trekking experts and gather information before you set out.
Fully equipped
Equipment is everything. In extreme cases, it can make the difference between life and death, and in all cases, it can make the difference between joy and suffering. Food, rain protection, cold protection, sun protection should always be in your backpack, as well as a first aid kit and a mobile phone (European emergency number: 112). Lighter luggage makes walking easier, so don't bring too much additional baggage. Your equipment should always be suitable for your planned tour.
Appropriate shoes
Trail running shoes are good for weekends in the mountains, but for longer tours, you should have at least Class A/B hiking boots. This means high mountain boots that are also waterproof. On the Alta Via 2, for example, a rather technical trail, your ankles need additional support, and you want to avoid sprains.
Stay on marked paths
In the Alps, there are endless marked hiking trails—well maintained and cared for. It may be tempting, but it's not a good idea to cut the trail or take alternative routes through unmarked terrain. If you do, you have a good chance of getting lost. Steep slopes with packed old snow are also often underestimated and can be dangerous. In doubt? Then don't do it.
Take regular breaks
As mentioned, you're on a hiking vacation. Take time for your walk and rest regularly. Our advice: If you have little time, it's better to take the short arrangement than to speed up the long one.
The kids have the power
If you're going on a hut-to-hut tour with the kids, the motto at Bookatrekking.com is, "The kids have the say." The kids are happy, mom and dad are happy. Listen to them and don't exhaust them. Play a game on the way so they don't ask you every five minutes if you're there yet. Of course, always choose the child-friendly option.
Respect nature
Leave no trash behind, avoid noise, stay on marked paths, leave the animals alone, and respect the protected areas.
The most important rule for hut-to-hut tours and hikes in the Alps or other high mountains is that the weather changes much faster in areas above 2,000 meters, and different climatic conditions prevail than at the altitudes where we usually travel. When planning a hut-to-hut tour and mountain hikes, always consider the weather forecasts. Even in midsummer, when the temperature in the valley is over 30 degrees Celsius, it can snow in the high mountains. The reason is that the temperature can drop by 5-6 degrees Celsius per 1000 meters of altitude. Since cold air can also store less moisture, it rains or snows more frequently in the high mountains than in the lowlands. In the high mountains, a thunderstorm can be particularly dangerous; generally, the likelihood of thunderstorms increases in the afternoon, and the weather can change very quickly due to the altitude.
You can recognize a possible thunderstorm by lightning strikes or the formation of small cumulus clouds. A significant drop in air pressure is also a sure sign of an approaching thunderstorm. During a thunderstorm, you should always avoid the via ferrata and other metal objects. Seek shelter in a cave or under a rock overhang as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, good protection from the sun is important. The tree line in the Alps is between 1,800 and 2,200 meters - above this altitude, you are exposed to the burning sun, which is always strong in the high mountains.
