Considering suitcases have all too often stolen the limelight, the trend of embracing the humble backpack is one we’re fully on board with, and we’ve been busy rounding up the best options on the market.

While suitcases benefit from a smooth set of wheels, they’re often more prone to pitfalls. We’ve lost count of the number of times an over-eager baggage handler has left our suitcase missing a wheel, and we’ve never quite got over the occasion when a faulty latch meant our suitcase appeared on the luggage carousel wide open, our underwear displayed for all to see.

So, what exactly makes one backpack better than another? Small stash pockets at the top of the bag are invaluable for storing items such as keys and spare change, while wide straps are great for spreading the weight.

Look for additional adjustable chest and waist straps, if you’re looking for a bag on the larger side (anything over 25l). We’re also huge fans of backpacks with openings on the sides and at the rear. This will mean you don’t have to rifle through your underwear, toiletries and bug spray to get to the items you’ve placed at the bottom of your bag.

We’ve picked out the best ones to suit any type of traveller, for city breaks, business trips and hiking holidays. Read on to find out which ones really impressed.

North Face trail lite speed 20l backpack

  • Best : Travel backpack overall
  • Weight : 640g
  • Rain cover included : No
  • Incredibly comfortable
  • Plenty of pockets

This is the backpack of our dreams. After a recent shoulder injury (caused, ironically, by lugging an ill-fitting backpack around Cambodia), this is precisely what we needed – a backpack with wide, contoured straps, which did a brilliant job of spreading the load, and easily accessible dual sternum straps to reduce pressure during long hikes.

We were blown away by this bag’s low weight, given how many added extras there are – from the mesh pockets incorporated into the shoulder straps, the carrying fixtures for hiking poles and the supersized pockets (why are these pockets usually so small?!) to the internal water-bladder pocket.

We also loved the versatility – side compression straps enabled us to reduce the bag’s bulk (this came in especially useful on an airline with particularly stringent cabin baggage policies), while generous use of reflective material ensured we stayed visible, too.

Lifeventure waterproof packable backpack

Lifeventure waterproof packable backpack.png

  • Best : Budget travel backpack
  • Weight : 150g
  • Rain cover included : No, but waterproof outer
  • Tackles rainy weather with ease
  • Reflective tabs
  • Compact design and super lightweight

Let’s face it. As much as we’d love 365 days a year of sunshine, the odd rain shower is unavoidable, which is where this brilliant backpack comes into its own. In a nutshell, if the weather takes a turn for the worse, there’s no backpack we’d rather be wearing. Made from waterproof Cordura ripstop fabric, it’s a bag that will ensure the contents stay dry, while reflective tabs ensure you stay visible.

We also loved the fact we could hang our bike light from the dedicated light attachment, for extra visibility. But, for us, its main USP is its compact design – it’s extremely light and squashes up into its very own pouch, but still felt fabulously comfortable, thanks, largely, to ergonomically contoured shoulder straps and a hip belt.

Monos metro backpack

  • Best : Backpack for simplicity
  • Weight : 1.08kg
  • Elegantly stylish
  • Lots of room

We’ll be honest, when we come across backpacks that look this glam, our heart often sinks, simply because they’re often all about style over substance. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case with this beauty, which has a Tardis-like interior – we were particularly impressed by the laptop pocket, which had an ultra-soft lining.

It’s another backpack that scores highly when it comes to customisation – the wallet-sized pocket at the top was perfect for stashing smaller items such as keys, and we loved the presence of two small handles that mean it can be carried handbag-style. Additionally, these handles clip together, enhancing the minimalistic design.

The bag’s USP is the detachable metro kit, which attaches to the backpack using Monos’s QuickSnap system (a genius invention that allows it to be attached to other bags in the range). This toiletry-bag-sized pouch (which we filled with our favourite moisturisers and serums) came into its own during skin-drying long-haul flights – we simply unclipped the metro kit from the backpack after we’d stashed it in the overhead cabin.

Chrome hondo backpack

  • Best : Backpack for toughness
  • Weight : 0.96kg
  • Incredibly tough
  • Great internal design
  • Its boxy shape might not appeal to everyone

This is one seriously hard-wearing bag. It comes with 1,050-denier recycled nylon shells and extra thick 1,680-denier recycled nylon bottom panels (in our experience, it’s the base of a backpack that is usually the first area to show signs of wear and tear). It also features reinforcement in unexpected (but truly worthy) places, such as over the front pocket’s zip.

Despite its streamlined shape, there’s an abundance of pockets, including two on the side, a padded sunglasses pocket at the top and an internal laptop sleeve. We also appreciated the numerous internal pockets, which were perfect for separating smaller items such as loose change, keys and charging cables. Easily adjustable straps and an ultra-breathable back panel did a great job of cranking up the comfort, too.

Vango quest 65 backpack

  • Best : Backpack for innovative design
  • Weight : 2kg
  • Sturdy compression straps
  • It weighs more than many backpacks

As travellers constantly try to evade ridiculously stringent restrictions relating to cabin baggage, we’d describe this Vango design as pure genius. Why? It comprises a larger backpack and a smaller 20l backpack, attached via a zip. This was music to our ears, because our first thought, after clapping eyes on this bag, was that there was no way it could double as a backpack for short city strolls, but the smaller backpack (which isn’t immediately obvious) means it does exactly that.

Exterior and interior compression straps will come in handy for reducing its bulk when you’re travelling light, and, despite its relatively compact size, there are still all the added extras we look for, including plenty of pockets, an elasticated flight cover and external hooks for securing items such as water bottles.

Fjällräven weekender

  • Best : Backpack for expandability
  • Weight : 650g
  • Comfortable shoulder straps
  • We’d love to have seen more internal pockets

OK, we use the word “tardis” a lot, but it’s truly justified with this bag, which can also be carried duffel-style. The straps are multi-purpose – they clip together using a press stud, compressing the contents and aiding the bag’s compact look, which is quite impressive, considering its 30l size.

Inside, it’s pretty minimal, with a large central compartment and a laptop pocket. Oh, and another strap, which means the bag can be worn over the shoulder, too. Despite the bag’s relative simplicity, it’s got everything we need – the easily accessible pocket on the front is great for items such as passports, and we were pleasantly surprised by the shoulder straps. On lightweight bags, the shoulder straps are often flimsy (at best) but Fjällräven’s had enough padding and width to keep our niggling shoulder pain at bay.

Osprey sojourn porter

  • Best : Innovative backpack
  • Weight : 1.3kg
  • Compact design
  • When full, it’s unlikely to fit under seats on budget airlines

Osprey has created a backpack that is seriously tough (the star of the show is the 460D high-tenacity ripstop nylon) and has more than enough room for a weekend away, but is also a joy to wear. However, it’s the compact design that really sets this backpack apart. To start with, the shoulder straps tuck neatly into a concealed pocket at the rear, while a combination of extended exterior sidewalls and straps not only compress the contents but can be used to cover the front of the backpack, providing extra security.

Although there’s a dedicated laptop pocket, two large central compartments mean you don’t really need one (who needs padding when your laptop’s surrounded by pants and jumpers, after all?), while two handles on the front enable it to be carried duffel-style, too.

Olpro 44l travel bag

  • Best : For a weekend away
  • Weight : 1.35kg
  • Innovative pocket placement
  • Numerous handles offer endless options when it comes to carrying style
  • Not the most rugged of backpacks

This is a brilliant option for a weekend away – especially if you’re someone who likes to separate all your essentials. We loved the presence of two large pockets on the front of the bag, as well as the duffel-style opening – the bag unzips on three sides and opens up to reveal a single central compartment (although a mesh divider allows this space to be divided in two).

This bag’s all about portability – both the sternum and shoulder straps are easy to adjust, and there are side and top carry handles, too. We also appreciated the roller bag handle slot on the rear, which meant we could easily slip it over the extendable handle on our spinner suitcase.

The North Face base camp duffel

  • Best : Duffel-backpack hybrid
  • Weight : 1.19kg
  • Although it can be worn easily as a backpack, it’s definitely easier to carry as a duffel

Backpacks that double as duffels make us nervous because they’re rarely comfortable or practical. This base camp bag, however, is our favourite exception to the rule. Yes, as its name suggests, it will serve you well if you’re hiking to a remote mountain, but it’s also great for weekend city breaks, thanks to its generous 50l capacity and the ridiculously tough material (1,000-denier polyester material with an 840-denier reinforced bottom layer).

The ergonomic straps were surprisingly comfortable, and we were able to remove them in a flash on occasions when we carried the bag duffel-style. The interior is simple but roomy – one supersized compartment with more than enough room for everything we needed for a (long) weekend away.

Montane trailblazer 25l backpack

  • Best : All-rounder
  • Weight : 750g
  • Surprisingly light
  • Well-balanced back support
  • Lots of adjustability
  • Deep pockets

When we read about this backpack’s “figure-hugging” design, we feared a serious case of sweaty-back syndrome. However, even when filled to its 25l maximum capacity, this bag felt surprisingly light, thanks, in part, to a well-balanced back support system that kept the bag close to our body while still allowing for breathability.

Montane has prioritised adjustability here. It was a breeze to adjust the back support system, harness and straps, and we were especially thankful for the extra-deep side pockets. Breathability is also obviously a key focus – almost the entire rear is covered with breathable mesh. Our favourite feature, however, was the easily adjustable chest straps, which were elasticated and could be loosened or tightened in a nanosecond.

Berghaus unisex remote hike 35 rucsac

Berghaus unisex remote hike 35 rucsac.png

  • Best : For travellers with lots of kit
  • Weight : 1,020g
  • Rain cover included : Yes
  • Lots of bells and whistles
  • Lots of different weather protection
  • Customisable

A backpack that pretty much does everything except cook campfire cuisine at the end of the day, Berghaus’s bag is a true workhorse but it doesn’t come with the bulk or weight we’d associate with this type of backpack.

The easily accessible bivi system (a waterproof hood that can be unfurled over the backpack) meant it was easy to add another layer of protection when the weather took a turn for the worse, and the side compression straps took this bag’s customisation capabilities to new heights. We loved how we could access the contents not only through the top but through size zippers, too.

We were also impressed by the backboard – these can be a godsend when designed correctly, as this one was, providing just enough to create space between our back and the bag, but without adding too much extra weight.

Jack Wolfskin traveltopia weekender

Jack Wolfskin traveltopia weekender.png

  • Best : Backpack for versatility
  • Weight : 630g
  • Rain cover included : No, but water-repellent
  • Sustainable materials
  • Lots of pockets

An essential for organised travellers, Jack Wolfskin’s traveltopia weekender is also exceptionally stylish. On the rear of the pack, a large pocket unzips on three sides to reveal two separate mesh pockets in the lid and a built-in laptop/tablet sleeve. The main compartment – accessible through one zip in the centre of the pack’s front (sounds weird, but it works) – is enormous, and the bag’s stiffer sides meant we were perfectly happy stashing more delicate items in the weekender.

It’s got great sustainability credentials, too – the pack is made from recycled polyester and has a water-repellent and scratch-resistant coating made from natural beeswax.

Helly Hansen Loke backpack

Helly Hansen Loke backpack.png

  • Best : Backpack for a logical layout
  • Weight : 575g
  • Bigger than it seems
  • Great for carrying precious tech
  • Quick-access pockets

This is another tardis-like backpack – we were sceptical about its suitability for a trek through a national park but it didn’t let us down. The generously sized handle on the top came in useful when dragging it out of overhead compartments on planes, and the logical layout of the interior, with its padded laptop pocket, made it easy to separate essentials – we used the main compartment for tech, the padded pocket for our laptop and the internal organiser for pens and notebooks.

We appreciated the quick access pocket at the top (as travellers prone to losing keys, the presence of a key hook was hugely appreciated) and the adjustable straps on the sides meant we could reduce its bulk in situations where space was at a premium – such as when travelling on planes or local transport.

Osprey Eja pro backpack

Osprey Eja pro backpack.png

  • Best : Osprey travel backpack
  • Weight : 900g
  • Designed with comfort in mind despite is huge size
  • Low weight and wide load-bearing straps
  • Plenty of clips

There aren’t many 55l backpacks we’d be happy to wear for significant periods of time, but this one’s the exception. Everything is designed with comfort in mind, from the ridiculously low weight and the wide, load-bearing straps to the generous patch of breathable mesh on the rear of the bag and on the straps.

What really impressed us was the opportunities for customisation. With lighter bags, these are often in short supply, but favourite features included the removable lid, designed to provide extra protection in rainy weather (when removed, the opening can still be sealed with an internal cover), internal compression straps and plenty of clips from which to hang items such as water bottles.

Fjällräven Abisko hike foldsack

Fjallraven Abisko hike foldsack.png

  • Best : For easy access
  • Tough and durable
  • Internal zips for extra protection
  • Adjustable straps

Full disclosure – Fjällräven is the reason we embraced the concept of fold-closure bags. This type of design feature has to be done right, and Fjällräven is an expert in the field. We loved how we could easily tweak the tightness of the closure, using the adjustable strap, as well as the way in which the aforementioned strap could be tucked neatly out of the way, by slipping it under the pack’s bungee cord strapping.

In the case of this bag, which has an incredibly tough build, there’s also an internal zip closure for extra protection. We appreciated the generous areas of breathable mesh on the straps and the rear, and the fact that both the chest and hip straps were removable.

The main compartment and side pockets both have toggles, which, when combined with the fold-closure design feature, makes this an incredibly versatile bag. Tighten the side pockets and add extra folds when travelling light, or loosen the toggles when you’re carrying more weight.

Peak Design travel backpack

Peak Design travel backpack.png

  • Best : For withstanding wear and tear
  • Weight : 1.44kg
  • Lots of strap options
  • Great for weekends away
  • Abrasion resistant

We love additional straps on our backpacks, and Peak Design’s offering has loads of them, including a centrally placed strap on the rear and one on the top. Plenty of pockets crank up the versatility – we found the small one at the top perfect for items such as keys and sunscreen, while the backpack’s main section (which is enormous) had two large mesh pockets that proved useful for stashing sweaty hiking kit.

The sleek look of this backpack – and the presence of an internal laptop pocket – makes this a great option for weekends away, too. Its toughness, courtesy of abrasion-resistant thread, recycled 400D nylon canvas and an additional internal liner, means this is a backpack that will stand up to some serious wear and tear. Bonus points for the full-size zip, too – it extends around three sides of the bag, which meant we could quickly get to the items we needed most urgently.

The verdict: Travel backpacks

North Face’s trail lite speed 20l backpack is our idea of portable perfection – it’s lightweight and comfortable to carry but had enough room for all the clothing, gadgets and other sundries needed for a weekend on the continent. Meanwhile, Monos’s metro backpack is a rarity – a backpack that cuts the mustard when it comes to capacity and durability but is also wonderfully stylish. Finally, we’ve got to mention Chrome’s hondo backpack – there’s little this bag can’t handle, and it offers fantastic value, too.

11 best travel backpacks for women who like to pack light

ladies travel rucksack uk

By Georgia Trodd

Off on holiday and need to pack light? You'll be needing one of the best travel backpacks, then. As spacious as a suitcase but with all the added benefits of a laptop backpack , i.e. somewhere to store your devices safely and neatly, travel rucksacks are – without a doubt – a frequent jet-setter's idea of heaven.

Forget what you thought you knew; travel backpacks are no longer reserved for those who are off to find themselves on their gap year (though, if that's you, no judgement), but are actually a savvier way of packing everything you could possibly need into way less luggage.

What is the best backpack to take on a plane?

If you're looking for a travel backpack that'll fit under your seat, we can't recommend Antler's Chelsea design enough. It's stylish and compact, with a 16.5” laptop pocket, suitcase sleeve, water bottle compartment and room enough for clothes and shoes inside. If you need something big enough for a few days but small enough to go in the overhead locker, Eastpak's Travelpack is the one. It can be carried on your back or as a holdall/weekend bag, is water-resistant and comes with a 30-year warranty(!).

Will a 35L backpack fit under airplane seat?

It's unlikely you'll find a 35L backpack that'll fit under an airplane seat , as, according to airline policy, any personal items stowed beneath seats should not exceed 18 inches x 14 inches x 8 inches – and a 35L bag would usually be bigger.

From designs that render your favourite four-wheel hard-shell case entirely redundant, to sleek cabin-sized styles that'll see you through a long weekend away , we've found the best women's travel backpacks to buy in 2024. See them all below.

Have pack, will travel! Our guide will help you find the best backpack for every situation

Maybe you’re old enough to remember when travel luggage meant a half-ton suitcase that gave you a hernia for every passport stamp. Backpacks were for hikers and wheels were for cars. Real travellers had suitcases and bruises.

Thankfully, those days are gone and travel backpacks are everywhere, sometimes even with wheels. They’re the ideal luggage format, whether you’re hiking or honeymooning or something in between. Hands-free, weatherproof, customisable, dotted with secure zipped pockets, and far more stylish than the towering crusty packs of old stereotypes.

Here, we’ve rounded up the best backpacks for different types of traveller, from business trippers to interrailers. Before we reveal our favourites, here’s a quick buying guide.

How to choose the best travel backpack for you

How big should a travel backpack be.

How long is a piece of string? It really depends what you’ll be using it for. A camping holiday will call for a backpack somewhat bigger than, say, a work trip. Here’s a rough guide.

10-25l: Daypack size. Perfect for keeping your cash, passport, phone and other essentials on you as you wander around a new city for the day.

30-40l: Ideal for a long weekend away, or a work trip where you need your laptop and a change of clothes. A 40-litre pack could be big enough for a whole week if you’re not expecting much change in the weather.

50-60l: This is a suitcase-sized backpack, big enough to accommodate all you need for a week away. Unlikely to be small enough to keep with you on a plane, though. Argos has a handy carry-on size guide here .

70l+: Difficult to carry unless you’re tall or an experienced hiker, so look for detachable trolleys and wheels to help you lug it around.

What other qualities make a good travel backpack?

Lots of compartments: Most of the bags in our rundown have a secondary zipped compartment at the top. But also look for extra pockets, laptop sleeves and securely zipped compartments inside and even on the straps. These all help you organise and access key items such as your passport, phone and travel documents.

Multiple access points: Don’t bother with a cheap duffel bag that only has one opening at the top. All your stuff will sink to the bottom and you’ll never be able to find your socks. The best travel packs have multiple “in” points, including side and front zips that open like a suitcase.

Security features: Look for zips that you can padlock and access points that lie against your back while you’re wearing the pack.

Water-resistance: All the packs in our rundown have a water-resistant finish to help protect your belongings when the heavens inevitably open. Most aren’t fully waterproof, though, so look for packs that include an additional waterproof cover.

Ergonomic design: Backpacks are made to be carried. Even 30-litre weekend packs should have a padded back, broad padded shoulder straps and an optional chest strap to help spread the load and protect your back. Straps should be adjustable to fit. Larger packs should have an internal frame and a hip belt.

The best travel backpacks you can buy in 2022

1. osprey transporter zip 30: best travel backpack for city breaks.

Price: £60 | Buy now from Blacks

ladies travel rucksack uk

The Transporter Zip’s outer shell is made from TPU-treated nylon that Osprey also uses for its hardcore expedition bags. It’s tough and water-resistant but also lightweight and sleek, almost leathery.

The main bucket-style compartment is Tardis-like in its spaciousness, and there are oodles of smaller compartments to organise your stuff. These include laptop and tablet sleeves, a pocket for your glasses and internal water bottle pockets that you can reach from outside using the smooth, robust zips.

Most importantly, Osprey’s bag is comfortable enough to wear all day. The back is padded and the shoulder straps are broad, padded and adjustable. There’s also a chest strap and detachable hip belt for extra support. Hard to fault.

Key specs – Capacity: 30l; Main material: Nylon (water-resistant); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 3; Weight (empty): 990g

2. Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP45 Econyl: Best travel backpack for business trips

ladies travel rucksack uk

Security specialist Pacsafe has festooned its 45-litre backpack with anti-theft features such as lockable zips, a lockable steel cable that wraps around the bag, and even steel mesh slash-proof fabric. Your laptop, prototypes and top-secret documents are definitely safe in there.

Pacsafe’s safety concerns extend to the environment, too. We love that the bag’s ‘Econyl’ nylon outer shell is made from recycled plastic like discarded fishing nets. It’s water-resistant and easy to clean, too, so should last years.

The Venturesafe EXP45 is at the top end of pack sizes that meet cabin bag restrictions, so be careful not to overfill it. The side compression straps help to squash it down to size. It also gets rather heavy when fully packed so you’ll definitely need the padded hip belt to help spread the weight.

Key specs – Capacity: 45l; Main material: Recycled nylon (water-resistant, slash-proof); Hand luggage suitable: Yes (but check airline limits); Colours available: 1; Weight (empty): 1.81kg

3. lowe alpine at roll-on 40: best travel backpack with wheels.

ladies travel rucksack uk

There are quite a few backpacks-with-wheels on the market, but Lowe’s clever cabin bag was the best we tried, thanks to its smooth, sturdy wheels and wide, rubbery trolley handle that made it easy to pull along at speed, even on rough ground.

The lightweight aluminium trolley is easy to fold down and works much like a standard backpack frame when you want to don the detachable harness. The harness doesn’t feel like an afterthought – the straps and back are padded – but you wouldn’t want to walk miles with it on either. It’s a travel hybrid, not a rambler’s rucksack.

Key specs – Capacity: 40l; Main material: Nylon (water-resistant); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 1; Weight (empty): 2.37kg

4. osprey ultralight stuff pack: best travel backpack under £30.

ladies travel rucksack uk

Osprey isn’t kidding with the ‘Ultralight’. This daypack is on the dinky side – just 18 litres, about the capacity of a carrier bag – but even so, its 90g weight is amazing. It even folds in on itself like a cagoule for easy storage.

The pack actually feels quite robust. The nylon shell is thin but strong and rip-proof, the back and adjustable straps are padded for comfort, and compartments include a zipped stash pocket for valuables and a side pocket for water bottles. You even get a waterproof cover. Perfect for hot-weather trips, when you want to carry a few bits but need to keep your load as light and breathable as possible.

Key specs – Capacity: 18l; Main material: Nylon (water-resistant); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 4; Weight (empty): 90g

5. Ortlieb Atrack: Best waterproof backpack for all-weather adventures

ladies travel rucksack uk

This indestructible pack from Ortlieb is guaranteed to survive underwater for up to half an hour. At last, you can fulfill your dream of barrelling over Niagara Falls wearing a backpack. You may not survive it, but at least your luggage will be dry.

The main zip is on the back (ie, worn against your back), so the bag keeps out pickpockets as well as water. When we opened it up we were pleased to find zipped compartments and internal strapping to keep things in place, so it’s not quite the duffel bag we thought at first glance. The strap system is also well designed, with full adjustment and padding for comfort.

Key specs – Capacity: 25l, 35l, 45l; Main material: Nylon (waterproof); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 3; Weight (empty): 1.56kg (25l)

Buy now from Ortlieb

6. Osprey Arcane Large Day Pack: Best travel daypack for commuters

Price: £80 | Buy now from Ellis Brigham

ladies travel rucksack uk

We’re itching to describe Osprey’s sleek, sober new pack as “smart casual”. (Sorry, Osprey.) It’s true, though. This smallish 20-litre bag would fit in anywhere: city commute, overnight with a friend, hike through the woods or urban getaway. It looks elegant but feels rugged and built to last. There’s even a quick-release security hook to shackle the bag safely to your chair leg, whether in a job interview or continental cafe.

The exterior is made from recycled polyester packcloth that feels soft but very durable, and the big zip, which goes all the way round, is smooth and satisfyingly chunky. We like the stretchy outer pocket, which is just big enough for a modest water bottle, but we’d have liked a few more sections inside. Most of our stuff ended up jumbled together in the main section. The padding is structured enough to protect a laptop, but it won’t protect your back when it’s full of books.

Most retailers only have the bag in Stonewash Black, but Osprey has four other colours on its website .

Key specs – Capacity: 20l; Main material: Recycled polyester packcloth (water-resistant); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 1 (plus 4 more from manufacturer); Weight (empty) : 744g

Buy now from Ellis Brigham

7. Lowepro ProTactic 350 AW II: Best travel daypack for photographers

ladies travel rucksack uk

Keep all your camera kit safe and close at hand with this pack from pro photography specialist Lowepro. The outer shell is tough and solid-feeling but really light, and we found it far more comfortable than lugging around our DSLR in a shoulder bag.

Once all the velcro dividers are in place, there’s not a huge amount of room inside, so you’ll certainly want another bag too if you’re travelling. But the dividers are vital for cushioning and separating specific bits of kit such as lenses, flashes, a tripod and even a drone, all of which are easy to reach via multiple zipped access points. The main opening is worn against your back for security and the pack includes an all-weather cover to keep out rain, dust and sand.

Key specs – Capacity: 16l; Main material: ‘FormShell’ nylon (weather-resistant); Hand luggage suitable: Yes; Colours available: 1; Weight (empty): 2.12kg

12 Best travel backpack 2023 Osprey to Samsonite

The 12 best travel backpack for every kind of escape

By Owen Gough

Get packed up and head out to adventure with GQ’s pick of the best travel backpacks for every destination

January is a time for holiday planning, right? There’s not a single person in the UK right now who couldn't do with a brief foray abroad to soak up the sun –our pick is the Maldives, in case you’re curious – but aside from making sure you actually get something booked in, you need to make sure you’re prepared for the upcoming journey when it comes to luggage. The best travel backpacks are our essential pick as you board the plane, largely because you’ve got to have someplace to store your snacks on the trip, but also because they allow you to bring spare clothes, headphones, a book, laptops or portable games consoles to keep you entertained without provoking the wrath of airline baggage allowance.

Carry-on size travel bags are vital to getting that little bit extra luggage on your journey, eking out all the space you can while also being comfortable and ready for treks across terminals, with compression straps to stay ergonomic and side pockets to tuck away boarding passes, passports or keys to save you the faff of hauling them out of your jeans before the security check.

In fact, the travel backpack is so versatile it can handle pretty much any venture you might envisage, from the daily grinding office commute to the day hike up a mountain on your family holiday, keeping your valuables safe and easily accessible regardless of where you happen to be. Ideal for public transport, hiking and jumping between flights, the humble backpack is your globe-trotting saviour. If you're still nursing your ageing school rucksack, allow us to guide you to the best travel backpacks for the smoothest journey of your life.

Skip to: What is the best type of travel backpack? | What should you look for when buying a travel backpack? | GQ’s guide to the best luggage, suitcases and backpacks for your travels

What is the best type of travel backpack?

The main variation in travel backpack types is the opening style. You have the more traditional top-opening option but there are also zip-open models (also known as clamshell opening bags) which can fully lift from the side, like a lid on a suitcase. The former is great for quickly loading and emptying, while the latter is ideal if you're travelling and want to dip in and out of your case, getting access to items at the bottom as easily as those at the top.

Others may add a front pocket to store those special valuables in a quick-to-reach place, or a water bottle pocket on the side, though be prepared to have to tip out any water before making your way through security.

Adjustable backpacks are pretty standard but some have more adjustment options than others. Breathable mesh covers, hip belts, backpack straps, chest straps and other ergonomic features can make it much easier on your body to carry more around, but be warned these will typically be bigger bags and therefore may not comply with restrictions. You may want to look out for this if you're going to be walking long distances and need maximum comfort and intelligent load distribution.

It’s worth highlighting that some carry-on luggage like wheeled miniature suitcases can also be used for the same purpose, so long as they comply with airline weight and size policy. For example, Antler, Carl Friedrik and many more offer hard-shell cases that are just as useful for storing in-travel entertainment while remaining small enough to stuff under the seat or in an overhead bin.

What should you look for when buying a travel backpack?

Access: The choice between a top or side-loading access is important. You may pay a little more for side loading but it means your life will be easier if you're planning to live out of the pack for a longer, multi-location trip. The additional functionality of being able to open up the entire bag across longer trips can be the difference between a stressful and breezy journey.

Pockets: Having lots of pockets can be a great feature which means quick and easy access to things like wallet, passport, sun cream, hats, shoes and so on, without having to dive into the backpack or, in many cases, even having to take it off.

Weight: While high-quality backpacks can be lighter than cases, they vary in weight. If you're only wearing it minimally, a heavier and more pricey option might be fine. But if you're walking long distances you'll want to keep this weight as low as possible.

Material type: Variations in material type mean different levels of protection for your kit. Some offer waterproofing, while others have tougher outers to avoid damage. Some will use more flexible materials leading to greater comfort than others.

Capacity: Ultimately, you want your travel backpack to straddle that balance between being small and easy to carry and capacious enough to hold your personal items on your journey. Most travel backpacks are capacious enough to fit roughly 72 hours’ worth of clothes and essential items (underwear and a change of clothes) while still having enough space for a laptop laundry bag or lunch box.

Osprey UNLTD AirScape 68 Mens

Best for: Heavy-duty long-distance travelling

What we like: Huge capacity | Comfortable, adjustable straps | Included rain cover and 8L top lid | Lumbar support | What we don’t like: Very expensive

  • Litre capacity: 68l
  • Material: High-tenacity nylon
  • Weight: 3kg

In our opinion, Osprey's AirScape sits at the absolute pinnacle of travel backpack design, though it comes with a steep price for the pleasure of owning.

Designed by Osprey's founder, Mike Pfotenhauer, this bag can accompany you on almost any adventure you might have, from an arctic exploration to a terrifying first-time backpacking venture across Europe. Utilising impressive 3D-printed moulds, the back plate slips around your spine for supreme comfort and lumbar support without feeling restrictive. Lugging this 68L monster might look intimidating, but it only weighs 3KG on its own and the auto-lift system of straps and harnesses that loop around your shoulders and chest means it's immensely easy to carry long distances.

For heavy packers, there's additional storage that can be added on top for toiletries, washing or those items you need to grab quickly when passing through borders. £650. At ospreyeurope.com

DB Hugger Backpack 25L Black Out

Best for: Skiers, heavy-duty travellers and backcountry movers

What we like: Supreme security for your gear | Compatibility with other Hugger gear | Durable What we don’t like: Bulky

  • Litre capacity: 25l
  • Material: Padded recycled polyester
  • Weight: 1.10kg

If it’s sturdy security on your mind for your travels, then it doesn’t get more protective than the Hugger Black Out. Oozing street cred cool with the all-black design, it’s a solid, durable backpack for weekend trips, commutes, train-hopping or simply knocking about town. Why is it so durable? Utilising a unique ribcage system that features internal grids to maintain the duffel bag shape, it’s so rigid that you could chuck it in the overhead bin, drop it or ding it jumping onto the ski lift and remain confident nothing is broken inside.

However, the truly impressive feature here is that you can hook it up to the larger Hugger duffel bag or check-in suitcase using the combined clips to save your back muscles some grief and breeze through the airport carrying one bag. It piggybacks on the larger bag to alleviate some of the weight issues often discovered when packing for long-haul journeys. The clamshell opening offers a decent enough space to adjust your packing or grab something important from the quick-access pockets and, for the price, it’s one of the most complete travel backpacks around. £169. Patagonia Altvia Pack 22L

Best for: Hill-walking, light hiking and battling the city commute

What we like: Incredibly lightweight | Front access clam shell opening | Eco-friendly materials What we don’t like: Quite small | Expensive for the size | Limited colour options

  • Material: Polyester
  • Weight: 678g

We love a good long-distance walk, but it's always made a bit better when we can take some snacks with us. Day hiking or travelling light can sometimes be tricky when it comes to backpacks, as sizing, weight and capacity can become major headaches when you're not sure what to go for. But if there's one brand that knows how to take care of you on your travels, it's Patagonia.

The Altvia 22L option is durably and sustainably made, water resistant and big enough to stow away a change of clothes, your essential documents and a few other must-have items like a post-walk snack or a phone charger.

Mostly a solid option for mountain-side recces rather than as a companion on your commute, you'll be scaling the hardest treks with confidence when you've got this bag on your back. £102. At alpinetrek.co.uk

Gifts for Girlfriends Antler Chelsea Backpack

Antler Chelsea daypack

Best for: Day trips for your most essential items

What we like: Back sleeve to fit over a suitcase handle | Water resistant | Detachable internal packing pocket | Internal packing straps | Space for a 16.5-inch laptop What we don’t like: Not big enough for longer trips

  • Litre capacity: 19l
  • Material: Durable nylon
  • Weight: 0.98kg

Flying off of shelves across the UK and then flying across Europe accompanying the smart shopper on their travels, Antler's Chelsea daypack is an exceptional option for those who travel light. Granted, it's not capacious enough to cope with a trip to Bali or Australia, but shorter trips are a joy. And having said that it's reasonably small, it's still big enough to fit a 16.5-inch laptop and has detachable internal pockets to either help you with your organisation or make more space.

On the design side, there are plenty of colour choices, and it's got a back sleeve so you can slot it over the handle of a suitcase, and we can't tell you how much easier it is to have all your gear in one place. £140. At antler.co.uk

Best for: Long-term travelling hiking backpack

What we like: Ergonomic design | Storage options in the shoulder straps | Durable design What we don’t like: Fairly small | Could do with more colour options

  • Weight: 1.09kg

Hands up if you’ve ever been halfway through a trek only to discover the super-cheap daypack you’re using to keep your food, drink and spare clothes in is simply not fit for the job. Be that a broken strap or not enough space to fit an energy-surging Mars bar, ensuring your travel backpack is equipped to deal with your adventure is vital. The Montane Trailblazer is a surefire way to guarantee all your clothes and gear are securely stowed in transit across mountains, through long-haul flights or simply on a holiday day trip. It’s a proper hiking backpack used for getting around the more rugged environments one might find themselves in, but also it’s incredibly lightweight.

What we love about the backpack is the ergonomic design, with a body-hugging sternum strap, a spine-friendly back panel, breathable material and plenty of clips and pockets for storing hiking sticks, water bottles or just a quick snack. Just as durable in mountainous weather as it is on a lad’s holiday to Tenerife, this is the travel pack of your dreams. £100. At montane.com

Nordace Edin Large Flap backpack

Best for: City-ready commuters and digital nomads

What we like: Large storage | Complies with overhead compartment laws | Quick-access pockets | Water resistant What we don’t like: Fairly pricy

  • Litre capacity: 28l

If the smart Nordace above is a bit too small and dainty for your rugged adventures and battles on the commuter train, the Edin large provides are sturdier alternative with plenty of smarts to tempt you across. Sporting a durable polyester chassis that’s roomy enough for laptop sleeves, water bottles, lunch and a spare change of clothes, it’s a properly good option for city commuters looking for something solid to keep office gear safe and secure.

The best backpacks offer a deep, cavernous interior with quick access to the stuff you really need. Here, a handy flap at the opening covers a series of pockets where you can store and grab passports, keys, wallets or other stuff you might need to get in a pinch. And if foreign travel is in your future, it will fit in under-seat and overhead storage without upsetting the airlines. £134. At nordace.com

Carl Friedrik Bowen

Best for: Fashionable commuting

What we like: Elegant leather design | Three colour choices | Padded laptop pocket What we don’t like: Expensive | Easily scratched | Reasonably small

  • Litre capacity: 18.7l
  • Material: Vachetta leather
  • Weight: 1.9kg

Carl Friedrik's luggage is the sort of aspirational clobber found in the hands of the wealthy and stylish – genuinely used as the luggage of the rich and famous in shows like Succession and White Lotus – but it's not so spenny that it can be out of your reach. If you're willing to shell out a bit extra on your bags, the Bowen is a beautiful leather number that packs a visual wallop and still houses enough space for passports, books, flight tickets and a few other nicknacks for the journey. A padded internal pocket will keep a small laptop protected, and it also features a sleeve to loop over suitcase handles. £575. At carlfiredrik.com

The world is open. Holidays and long weekend breaks are back on the schedule, and we’re excited to explore places, food and people beyond the island we call home.

For some, this post-pandemic world could present the first opportunity to do some real travelling in years, whether it’s finally pressing go on a stalled gap year, making the decision to go on a career break or dreaming of a sabbatical in the sun. This coming summer may be the first time you go to a festival.

If you’re planning to do some long-term travelling or cram in many destinations over a short period, there are some things you’ll need before you hit the road.

Top of the list? A decent backpack that can hold all your possessions comfortably (with space for a few choice souvenirs of course) as you crisscross continents or green fields.

What size backpack is best for backpacking?

Anywhere between 60 - 70L is a decent volume for backpacking, giving you enough space for a trimmed-down travel wardrobe, an extra pair of trainers and some creature comforts to make life while you’re away from home more enjoyable. If you’re going in the winter, you might want to up that number to account for the bulkier and heavier clothing you’ll need.

What to look for in a good backpack

  • Whether you’re travelling by plane, train or automobile, you’ll want a bag that’s comfortable to carry for long periods, so look for wide padded straps and make sure you know how to adjust it before you set off. Strapping it on correctly using the hip belt - with the bulk of the weight firmly on your hips - will ease the pressure off your shoulders.
  • Compartments are your new best friend. Look for a design with a few exterior pockets to make reaching for essentials like your passport, tickets and travel tech easy. They will also help organise your bag so you don’t have to upend the entire contents when you need something specific.
  • Look for something that offers easy access to the main compartment, like a main zip that goes all the way around or one that lets you access things from the bottom so you don’t have to root through to find your things. Packing cubes are also helpful to keep similar items - pants, tops, shorts - in one place.
  • A backpack with a smaller bag attached to it is a useful extra and means you’ll have an option for day trips once you’ve reached your main destination.

Choose wisely and you’ll have a backpacking backpack that will last many years and many miles.

To help you find the one, we’ve put together a list of the possible contenders.

Mountain Warehouse Nevis Extreme 65 + 15 Litre Rucksack

ladies travel rucksack uk

With a wide zipped entry into the main compartment, this backpack is perfect for travel, allowing you full access without having to dig your stuff out of the bottom. The 65L main bag comes with a 15L mini day back attached, boosting capacity when you need it and also acting as an extra backpack for day trips.

Both feature plenty of pockets and straps to store and secure the design to you, making it as easy as is possible to cart around. We like the fact that the side of the main bag features handles, making it easier to grab out of a luggage rack. The rip-stop fabric works to stop minor nicks and cuts from ruining the entire design and there’s even built-in cable access to plug in your headphones when your device is securely packed away.

If you’re remote working while you’re travelling a dedicated laptop sleeve will keep your tech safe until the next shift. Comes with a rain cover.

Lixada Hiking Backpack 60L

ladies travel rucksack uk

There’s no danger of missing this backpack on the luggage carousel: the bright orange will scream for attention from miles away.

The large capacity backpack is light at 1.12kg empty, leaving more space for all your stuff, but it’s a strong bag too with details like breathable mesh padding, a wide hip belt with zipped pockets and adjustable straps to keep things comfortable when you’re on the move.

There are zips and pockets galore, with the one on the top able to expand overall capacity. There’s even a rain cover to protect your things in case of a downpour. As well as backpacking, it’s an excellent option for camping, hiking and festivals too.

Also available in the less exciting colours of black, blue and green.

Forclaz Women’s Symbium 50 + 10L Rucksack

ladies travel rucksack uk

Make the decision to travel light and you’ll be rewarded with less stuff to lug around on your voyage. This pale blue backpack is loaded with zip entries and pockets with extra storage in the hip belt to keep necessities close to hand. It’s originally designed for female trekkers but there’s no reason it wouldn’t work for longer-term backpacking too. The carrying system makes it easier to bear heavy loads when you’re getting from A to B.

OEX Vallo 70 Rucksack

ladies travel rucksack uk

This design is made for long-haul backpacking adventures with up to 70L of precious space to make use of. The lightweight pack splits its capacity with a 10L pocket at the top and the rest in the main compartment, safe under a durable and water resistant shell that can handle short showers (for serious downpours, reach for the integrated rain cover).

This blue whale has all the bells and whistles that you could hope for in a serious backpack, from spongey straps and adjustable harness system to u-shaped zip pullers that are easy to use even if you’re wearing gloves.

Doshwin 70L Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

It’s a case of access all areas with this backpack from Doshwin. Store the bulk of your clothes in the drawstring-close main compartment, and use the top, side and side mesh pockets to stash important documents, water bottles and keep currency close to hand. There’s even a dedicated pocket to hold shoes, perfect to stop them dirtying the rest of your clothes. The overall capacity is 70L, a good option for up to six months travelling with careful and considered packing.

Patagonia Altvia Backpack 28L

ladies travel rucksack uk

This is one of the most versatile backpacks we’ve come across. It’s got a 28L capacity, but if you’re travelling light, its drawstring closure means it’s easy to tuck any excess fabric away. This was one of our favourite features. By plumping for a drawstring opening, Patagonia has reduced the chances of dirt and damp working its way inside the bag when it’s placed on the ground.

It also feels incredibly secure, something which is often a higher priority on camping trips, especially when there might be moments backpacks are left unwatched in tents for short periods of time. Add an ultra-breathable back panel and strap cushioning where we needed it most, and this might just be the most comfortable backpacks we’ve come across.

Eagle Creek Migrate Duffel 60 - Luggage

ladies travel rucksack uk

There are multiple ways to carry this 29 x 59-84 x 28cm brightly coloured duffel bag/ backpack from Eagle Creek, something your future self will thank you for if your shoulders start aching from the weight.

It can carry a maximum of 66L all in one central compartment, although there is a slim side pocket to hold papers, tickets and cash, lending itself well as a top candidate for your travel adventures.

In fact, the makers are so confident it will go the distance, this bag comes with a lifetime warranty. Another plus: it’s made from recycled polyester, a much better choice for the planet.

Best smaller travel bags for day trips, weekend breaks and festivals

Rains rolltop rucksack.

ladies travel rucksack uk

For something unique, take a look at Danish company Rains. Touted as a great option for cycling, the Rolltop Rucksack is classically Scandinavian: simple, striking and uniquely cool.

Rains is known for its splashproof designs so if you’re heading somewhere currently going through a wet season, this is a great option. As the name suggests, it comes with a roll top, so you can adjust the amount of space you need depending on how much stuff you’re carrying but will have to forgo more sophisticated fastening and compartment options available on other bags.

Ultimately, this one is a no-frills option but is practical enough to be worth consideration - it comes with both a front and laptop pocket, back padding and adjustable shoulder and chest straps.

Plus, with its unique design and four earthy colourways to choose from, it’s stylish as well, meaning you’re more likely to get decent use out of it even whilst not travelling. Great for commuters.

TOPO DESIGNS Mountain Pack 28L Walking backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

Widely lauded as one of the best carry-on travel backpacks around, the Topo Travel Bag weighs just over 1kg and can carry up to 28 litres, making it one of the lightest fully-functional backpacks on offer.

Say hello to ample storage as the main clamshell zipper opens into two main compartments. There are several other organisational pockets too, including one for your laptop (fitting up to a 15 inch screen) and one with a key fob clip inside, ensuring your most valuable items are kept safe.

One of our favourite elements of this one is the heavy duty YKK zips that come with toggles, making them much easier to open and close than others. The back panel, shoulder and hip straps come with extra padding and with a chest strap included too, this one is well set up for carrying over uncomfortable terrain or longer distances. Including a duffle strap, it can be carried over one shoulder too.

Inateck 40L Travel Bag

ladies travel rucksack uk

If you like to keep things simple by just having one do-it-all bag that works for hiking, longer and shorter trips, the Inateck Backpack checks all the boxes.

If you get to the point where you’ve had enough of carrying it like a rucksack, it can be flipped on its side and carried life a briefcase with the multiple handles. With a 40 litre capacity and a built-in toiltries bag, all wrapped in scratch-resistant fabric, even the least conservative packers will find that it can hold enough clothing for a couple of weeks whilst still giving you enough space to store your laptop and other gadgets in the dedicated padded sleeves.

The design is simple but not unappealing - though on the boxy side, it’s sleek enough to be inoffensive and, most importantly, the padded shoulder and chest straps make it comfortable to carry too.

Kapten & Son Bergen

ladies travel rucksack uk

Those seeking something more sophisticated will love the Kapten & Son Bergen backpack - a heavenly homage to sleek Scandi style design. Made from a buttery vegan leather in a choice of sandstone or black, it’ll look particularly smart on a city break or business trip.

At just 11 litres and with a 15 inch laptop pocket, this one is on the smaller side, but comes with a special padded laptop compartment as well as two interior pockets and a larger exterior one. With both shoulder straps and carrier handles, it can be used as either a backpack or a tote. Of course, if you opt for the lighter option, it’ll show up dirt more easily but if you’re just planning to use it to explore a new city, you should get away with this - especially as the material can be wiped clean.

What it lacks in practicality it certainly makes up for in style, so if you want something that’ll look good on the ‘Gram, this is the one for you.

Eastpak Strapverz S

ladies travel rucksack uk

With a clamshell zip system, two mesh-separated compartments and a handle and wheels, this backpack is a cabin size suitcase hybrid.

As such, the design makes it easy to pack clothes into and thanks to the canvas-style flexible fabric, can hold enough for a few days away. The compression straps are easy to manoeuvre, so even if you’ve overstuffed it, you can secure the back into a more compact shape and with material and zips that feel reassuringly sturdy. It makes you trust that it won’t fall apart in transit.

Perhaps one of its greatest features, though, is the variety of handle options you can call upon depending on the situation: padded shoulder straps to sling it over your back; an extendable telescopic trolly handle for carrying it like a suitcase. When empty, it also shrinks down to be completely flat, meaning it can easily be stored away without taking up the space of a suitcase.

The bag can hold up to 42L and the TSA lock is great if you’re looking for that extra bit of security.

Antler Chelsea Overnight bag

ladies travel rucksack uk

Best for: the stylish traveller

A tiny bag, that, with the right packing methods, can see you through enough outfits for four days, Antler’s Chelsea Overnight bag is a pretty remarkable thing. The £70 price tag is on the pricier end of the scale, but when you consider add-on baggage costs, it will quickly pay for itself. There are pockets inside for organisation and an adjustable carry-strap to allow you to wear it cross-body.

Measures 41.5 x 26 x 18cm and available in a variety of muted colours.

Away The Everywhere Zip Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

Like all of Away’s luggage, the The Everywhere Zip Backpack is sleek and aesthetically pleasing, so if you’re someone who likes your luggage to look as good as it moves, it’s certainly worth considering.

Though relatively small on sight, it’s capacity is surprising - you can fit a large laptop (which has its own padded interior sleeve), several books, a bag of carry-on liquids, your travel essentials and a water bottle in and still have room to stuff in a jumper (trust us - we’ve tried). A panel on the back allows you to slip it over the hands of a suitcase (though not as wide as others it still does the job well) and also conceals a hidden pocket that’ll fit a wallet, phone and passport, that sits against the back.

Previous iterations didn’t have mesh panels, but this updated design comes complete with a mesh back, which is helpful if you’re visiting a humid country. It’s generously sized for quick and easy packing whilst still being small enough to stow under the seat in front on the plane. Made from nylon, it can be wiped clean, too.

Antler Chelsea daypack in taupe

ladies travel rucksack uk

Those looking for a pack with an air of sophistication can’t go far wrong with the Chelsea backpack - a vision in ergonomic design and sleek black fabric.

It’s made from a premium durable nylon that is both water-resistant and finished in an attractive matte black. With a 12 litre capacity and at 37x26x12cm in size, it fits within most airlines’ carry-on specifications and even comes with a backstrap to slot over a suitcase handle, in case you’re planning on carrying more than one piece of hand luggage.

With padded laptop or iPad pockets (up to 13-inch) as well as three divided compartments, this is well-suited to business trips or for use as a day pack for outings, rather than an all-in-one piece of carry-on luggage.

It gets extra points for being particularly smart to look at and supremely comfortable to carry - even with several gadgets and heavy documents in tow, it didn’t dig into the shoulders at all.

Comes with a lifetime warranty.

Gomatic Travel Pack 20L - 30L

ladies travel rucksack uk

With a 20L capacity, with the possibility to expand the bag up to 30L, and a padded compartment for a 17 inch laptop, this Gomatic design has a lot to offer - especially for business travelers.

There are pockets galore: a large clamshell opening for storing clothes as well as two inner mesh sections - one containing a transparent washbag. There is also a padded laptop sleeve (though this sits in its own outer zipped compartment - not quite as secure as an inner one) and a hidden pocket that sits flush against the back.

The backpack is made from water-resistant and durable materials and features magnetic water bottle pockets and RFID pockets. Along with the buckled chest straps and padded side and top handles, it’s got a solution for virtually every travel need or scenario.

Peak Design Travel Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

At the very top end of the price range is the Peak Design Travel Backpack - a longstanding favourite within the backpack community (if there is such a thing). This one has been made with photographers in mind and has several specially designed compartments for stashing your camera gear.

With a dedicated sleeve for your laptop, passport, water bottle and various other pieces of kit, it’ll help you ensure your most precious items stay safe and easy to find whilst the weatherproof zips and hard wearing material will ensure it’s all kept dry even in the most aggressive of downpours.

Despite opening in a clamshell style, one of our favourite things about this design is that, even when empty, it’ll hold itself up so if you prefer to pack it from the bottom up, you can do that. The shoulder straps and hip belt can all be stored away and replaced with a duffle style strap if you prefer.

The only thing this one is really missing is a side strap to make it easier to lift into the overhead cabin.

Fjallraven Re-Kånken

ladies travel rucksack uk

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of – or at least seen – the iconic Swedish Kånken backpack by Fjallraven. Loved by adults and school kids alike, the Kånken is a true all-rounder that comes in a variety of styles, known for its ability to evenly distribute the weight of its contents across both shoulders so that it feels like you’re barely carrying anything.

This special edition Kånken is made entirely from polyester recycled from eleven plastic bottles. Very precise. Utilising the novel SpinDye technology, Fjallraven has drastically reduced the amount of water, energy and chemicals used throughout the production process. Like the Kind Bag, it’s also ready to be recycled again in the very distant future.

For the eco-conscious lot who are always on the move, the Re-Kånken comes with a removable seat pad that is stored in the inside back pocket, which also works to add some extra protection between your back and the contents of the bag.

Osprey Osprey Sojourn Porter Pack 30L

ladies travel rucksack uk

Going interrailing or city hopping around the EU? You may not need something seriously bulky in that case. Look to Osprey where you can find this duffel/backpack that’s more than up to the job. The shell-like design has a roster of standout features, from a front pocket to keep your passport and tickets in order, a padded slot for your laptop and quick access to the main compartment with lockable zips. StraightJacket straps work like shapewear to compress your bag down to a smaller, compact size.

Cotopaxi Allpa 42L Travel Pack - Del Día

ladies travel rucksack uk

Best for: easy organisation and a weatherprooof cover

For colour enthusiasts, this Cotopaxi backpack packs a punch both in terms of style and practicality. Though once again on the pricier side, this travel pack is a top-of-the-range, cabin-approved piece of kit that will serve you for many years of travels to come.

If you’re already a fan of the Cotopaxi range, you might be thinking - isn’t this just their classic Allpa pack? What’s the difference? For the eco-conscious, the Del Día version of the Allpa Travel Pack is made from re-purposed fabrics, making each and every model unique.

What sets this travel pack apart from the crowd for us is the fact that it has a suitcase-like, full-wrapper zipper which covers the entire circumfrence of the bag. This means that you can open up your backpack like a book, for easy organisation and even easier re-packing if you’re on the move.

With a weight-distributing harness system for pain-free carrying, four reinforced grab handles, padded sleeves for smart devices and laptops, internal mesh compartments, security YKK zippers and so much more - you simply can’t go wrong.

Built for Athletes Small Black Gym Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

Best for: the capacity to double as a weekend bag

Despite its rather military exterior, this backpack has indeed been crafted with athletes in mind. Offered in 25L and 45L models, this is about as close as you’ll get capacity-wise to a cross-country backpacker’s kit, without the cumbersome size. Featuring two side bottle holders capable of holding 750ml each, this backpack is also equipped with an adjustable sternum and waist straps for hiking and camping.

Our favourite feature is the fact that this backpack opens flat to 180 degrees for easy packing and unpacking. A brilliant option for commuters who take the train in from outside the city, or those who cycle to work and require a change of clothes once they’re in the office – the water-resistant and rip-proof design will keep your belongings safe no matter how far you travel.

  • Best Daypack: Best Carry On Backpack

Best Quality Backpacks

Best hiking backpack for women, best wheeled backpack for travel, backpack comparison guide, best backpacks for travelling.

It's hard to decide on which types of backpacks for travelling, and you may even choose to buy more than one depending on your trips. Do you take a small backpack, one of the 40l travel backpacks, a 50l travel backpack or even larger? It really depends on what type of trip you are going to do. Backpacking packs are ideal for spontaneous travel and if you are planning on a short European trip walking through cobbled streets then a smaller backpack is easier to take.

If you are planning a longer trip and are going to be experiencing different seasons, then take a 60 litre bag. If it’s a short city break then a travel backpack 45 litre will suffice. Some people can survive on hand luggage for three months and others need the biggest bag they can find.

You can always take enough clothes for a week then wash them as you go. That way you may be able to survive with just a travel backpack carry on. It makes flying cheaper as you don’t have an additional bag to check in and pay for and you won't have to wait for it on the luggage carousel.

It’s also more comfortable travelling with less especially if you have to walk to a bus station or your accommodation. Look at the best travel backpack for women with a woman’s frame and if you buy it from a shop ask them to fit it for you so you know how to wear it properly. Consider your frame size. If you buy a large backpack it could be too difficult to carry and you may not be able to stand upright.

Backpacks are easy to carry and have comfortable straps for your waist and shoulders. A women's hiking backpack for example can be easily carried over rough terrain and is perfect for places which don’t have cemented roads. If you don’t want to take a backpack then consider taking a suitcase instead which is more suited towards city travel and places with smooth surfaces (difficult for places off the beaten track).

There are some great suitcase backpacks (a travel backpack opens like suitcase), that combine the two and even backpacks on wheels which are heavier than a standard backpack. Just find what works for you or have one of each and take whichever one is easier for a particular trip.

The only downside is that backpacks can get heavy on your back and make you feel a bit uncomfortable in the heat during hot months. That’s why buying one of the best quality backpacks for travel instead of a flimsy solo tourist backpack is recommended.

If you do decide to buy a backpack especially ladies backpacks, there are side loaders and top loaders. The top loaders are a rucksack backpack and are mainly popular for camping trips. Most travellers prefer a side loader travellers backpack that opens right up so you can see inside it.

Why Choose Backpack Bags For Travel?

  • Backpacks are easier to move around through obstructed streets or narrow pathways.
  • If there are cobblestones then wheeling a suitcase can be a problem.
  • If it’s crowded then a backpack is better than pulling a suitcase behind you.
  • No-one can just grab your backpack if it’s on your back so you may feel safer with your belongings.
  • If you have to walk up and down flights of stairs (hello Barcelona and Belgrade), then choosing one of the best small backpacks for travel to strap to your back is easier than lifting a heavy suitcase up six flights of stairs.
  • There is no danger of your wheels breaking mid-trip.
  • You are hands free so it can be easier to look at your phone for navigating yourself around, and hopping on and off transport.
  • If streets are flooded as they can be in Venice for example the bottom of your suitcase may get wet.

Best Daypack For Travel: Best Carry On Backpack

The size of check in luggage differs from each airline so the smaller the carry on backpack the better. You can only take a handbag now with Ryan Air unless you pay for Priority Boarding so if you are travelling with hand luggage only, check airline hand luggage measurements before you choose your best backpacks for flying.

Some backpacks come with their own day packs (a small travel backpack for the day). The general rule of thumb is to keep all of your valuables and important things in your daypack. Some backpacks also have the daypack attached which can be zipped off and used separately. If you don’t have a daypack then take a zipped bag for walking around during the day. Below are our reviews for the best backpack for carry on.

Minaal Carry-On 2.0 Bag (35L)

ladies travel rucksack uk

“I highly recommend the Minaal Carry On 2.0. It looks good, is a lightweight backpack, and the right carry-on even on European flights. I used it for 2 months of hiking/backpacking through Asia and Pacific Northwest. It’s one of the backpacks with compartments and I love that there's space for my laptop, kindle, shoes, and clothes (with packing cubes) and compartments for toiletries, and top pockets for essentials (passport, wallet, keys). I purchased the full set with cubes and a hip belt. I've brought it trekking for the summer in Asia and winter in Europe and it still looks good as new. I'm under 5'0, and my boyfriend is 5'11” and we both have one. It's our default bag for all of our trips, short or long, weekend weddings to long hikes through the jungle since it looks normal enough versus a hiking backpack. It's a suitcase replacement for us.” – Hannah Kwan

Tortuga Backpack 35-45L

ladies travel rucksack uk

“I have been traveling with a Tortuga air and a smaller backpack. I love the air because it opens like a suitcase and I keep everything contained in cubes. I brought mine to Thailand and I loved it. I pack pretty small but there is a bigger version. The secret is choosing one of the good quality backpacks that opens flat like a suitcase, so you don't have to pull everything out. I lived out of it for 2 months.” – Allyson Ni Choillte

Osprey Packs Farpoint 40

ladies travel rucksack uk

“You can get a bag that works as both! Rolling backpacks they are called. The North Face and Osprey do them. However, they are often quite heavy, so not ideal if you are only taking hand luggage. I recently got the Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack which is EU hand luggage size and is relatively light.” – Natalie Sarah

“I have had the osprey porter 40. It’s the best travel backpack carry on and is a perfect size. It opens all the way up so you can access the entire content. Packs down like a suitcase and small enough to be carry on. Best bag ever. Took it with me to Japan and Thailand, and to Vietnam next week. I even convinced my boyfriend to buy one.”- Kelly Zapecki

“Osprey 40 is the one I use and love it! I haven't had any problems taking it as a backpack for air travel and I love the suspension system (a big reason I chose that one). It opens like a suitcase so it easier to keep organised” – Kayla Sheely Lettko

“I love my Osprey 46. I have a random Timberland Daypack that I picked up at a thrift store.” – Julie Brock

“I use the Osprey Exos 48. It's been perfect for the last 7 months on the road. It's one of the best lightweight backpacks, it's comfortable and great for hiking as well. It's the best pack I've found yet for travelling.” – Jacqui Beaton

Osprey Packs Fairview 55 Women's Travel Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

“I also have an Osprey. Mine is the Farpoint 55 and I love it. It opens like a suitcase (something you definitely want). Also, using packing cubes make it so easy so you can put all clothes in one. You can pull it out to get to other things and clothes stay folded and in one compact area.” – Stephanie Turnbull Weilnau

“I’ve got these backpacks that you can use as a sandwich (which I personally ended up preferring) but also you can zip the daypack to the big bag.” – Rose Figueroa

If you are looking for the best budget day hiking backpack, below you'll find our hiking backpack reviews.

Macpac Genesis Aztec 55L

ladies travel rucksack uk

“I have a 55L Macpac Aztec genesis hiking/travel hybrid. (it’s labelled as a 70L because it’s a 55 + 15 detachable daypack). I modified the bag slightly so every section is lockable – this is why I picked a hybrid pack and Aztec is one of the most popular backpacks.

The included daypack wasn’t suitable for my laptop and other electronics so I paired it with the STM Drifter daypack. (Note: both brands are from Australia/New Zealand – so availability globally is more limited). It’s one of the best day hiking backpacks and both bags accompanied me for 18 months continuous travel; and for the 18 months after that they’ve been used for shorter trips (between 3-5 weeks; anything shorter I only have my daypack). I also used it for walking the El Camino de Santiago. My Macpac travel backpack fits me like a glove these days.” – Catharina Stam

Osprey Ariel 65

ladies travel rucksack uk

“I had a 32L back pack for 3 weeks in Indonesia. It was more than enough. I now am using a 75L Osprey convertible backpack with a trolley option which I really like! I think it also comes in a smaller size too.” – Kerri Tyquin

Gregory Deva 80L

ladies travel rucksack uk

Also, It opens from the top like most backpacks, but I love that the whole front also unzips so you can access your stuff easily. I purchased through REI and was able to customise it. The bag, the arm straps and the waist belt are all different sizes, so it's a perfect fit! I also really like that it's got plenty of support straps to balance the weight properly, or make the bag seem not so huge when I need it for shorter trips and don't need 80L.” – Jessica Weissman

Big backpacks for travel aren’t always ideal for city breaks. Carrying an outdoor backpack around when you are travelling to a city may not be your first choice. If you are looking for a travel backpack with wheels, whether it's a Kathmandu wheeled backpack or an Osprey solo backpack, below are the best wheeled backpacks that we've found.

Osprey Packs Meridian 60L/22 Wheeled Luggage

“I love my Osprey. I have a backpack that has the exact same layout as a suitcase and it's my wheeled backpack for Europe travel both solo and with friends .” – Jessica Acuna

“I have the Osprey women's travel backpack Ariel 65 and it’s been used for long trips as well as Osprey city breaks. It is a great bag with front access and lots of clever technology built in. The Osprey Aura is also a great design although there is no front entrance but I’d argue an even more comfortable bag to wear.” – Lucia Paone-Michael

a girl wearing a white t shirt with a small grey backpack standing on a hill looking over a lake and a small town - best carry on bags for women

A round-up of the best carry on sized bags or backpacks for women and female travellers…

If you’re travelling on a budget, whether it’s a short break or a long term round-the-world trip, packing everything into a hand luggage sized bag or backpack can help you save money… as well as saving you time at the airport.

In this post, I’ve chosen my favourite bags and backpacks, and also gathered recommendations from fellow travel bloggers, to make sure this list ONLY includes tried-and-tested cabin bags that you can trust.

All the bags on this list are suitable to use as cabin luggage. However, don’t forget that some budget airlines these days now only include a “personal item”, and this needs to fit under the seat in front of you. So you may need to pay extra to add a large cabin bag. Check the table at the end of this post for clarification.

But this list also includes some really small carry on bags and backpacks to suit women travelling with only that stingy underseat personal item allowance. Perfect if you’re on a really tight budget!

To help you find the right cabin luggage for your needs, I’ve divided the post up into sections (use the contents menu below to browse). I’ve then listed all the bags in ascending size order.

These really are some of the best carry on bags for female travellers available at the moment, so you’re bound to find the right one for you…

Travel Hack Tote Bag, 30L

Kipling darcey small spinner, 30l, jewel small suitcase by rock luggage, 34l, travel hack stowaway ladies cabin backpack, 20l, cabin max chicago, 20l, deuter trans alpine 24l, arcido saxon, 25l, tropicfeel shell backpack, 22l – 40l (expandable), peak design travel backpack, 30 – 45l (expandable), gomatic 40l travel bag, osprey fairview 40l, cabinzero military backpack 44l, pacsafe venturesafe exp45, 45l, lowepro fastpack bp 250, 20.5l, wandrd prvke 21l, thule aspect dslr camera backpack, 32l, carry on bag sizes for budget airlines uk – 2024.

Some (not all) of the carry on bags and backpacks included below were gifted to me or to the bloggers who recommended them. But all opinions are 100% honest.

Best Carry On Bags for Women

Pros – Fits EasyJet’s underseat/personal Item dimensions. Tons of pockets – including one for hair straighteners! Can be combined with rolling luggage. SO pretty!

Cons – Not small enough for Ryanair’s stingy personal item allowance! Carrying over the shoulder can be quite heavy if you overfill it.

Size: 45 x 36 x 20cm Price: £39.95 – check here for latest prices Recommended By: Me!

black tote bag in front of an orange suitcase with a bookshelf in the backgroun, the bag is the Travel Hack tote bag, one of the best carry on bags for women

One of my favourite bloggers, Monica from the Travel Hack, has a range of luggage and it is absolutely gorgeous! She sent me the newest addition, the 30L Travel Hack Underseat Tote Bag , to try out and I LOVE it.

This is the perfect carry on bag for people who don’t like backpacks or prefer a shoulder bag. It’s a huge tote bag with about a million pockets (OK, ten pockets) so you can stay super organised. And you can easily pack enough for a one or two night break as it’s surprisingly roomy.

It also features a clever handle pass-through on the back, which means you can combine it with your wheeled luggage without the bag falling off. And the design is really stylish and feminine: faux leather with rose gold details and a pink interior. So pretty!

Pros – Lightweight. Water-resistant fabric and very durable (mine has lasted nearly a decade). Fits all aeroplane carry-on sizes.

Cons – Things can get lost in it. The monkey tag fell off on the first use!

16 of the Best Carry On Bags + Backpacks for Women [2024]

The Kipling Darcey Small Spinner cabin bag is super lightweight, so it’s easy to pick up and haul into the overhead bin, and easy to wheel. I can even put a backpack on the handle if I don’t want to wear it. It’s so sturdy!

The bag can be checked in if needed, and it easily fits enough for a weekend away – or a week if it’s a beach holiday. It’s also available in lots of colours and patterns (but I have it in black).

Pros – Really stylish design. Really roomy for such a small case. Super lightweight. Smooth easy-glide wheels.

Cons – No side handle.

Size: 55x40x20cm Price: £74.99 Recommended By: Me!

a black suitcase with rose gold zip on a cobbled street with trees behind, one of the best carry on bags for women

I got the Jewel Small Suitcase from Rock Luggage just in time for my recent trip to Lisbon. Its bang-on the right size for TAP Air’s (and Ryanair’s) large cabin bag allowance, so it’s ideal for a short break on a budget.

This is SUCH a pretty bag, I absolutely love it! I have it in black with rose-gold trim, but there are a couple of other options available, and it just looks so stylish.

It’s also super lightweight (just 2.5kg) and really maximises the space inside. I was able to pack about five outfits, two jumpers, and a spare pair of shoes as well as all the usual travel essentials . And there’s a big outside pocket (big enough for my 13″ laptop) plus a larger interior pocket for organisation. This has to be one of the best carry on bags for women in the UK right now – I genuinely love it!

Best Carry On Backpacks for Women

Pros – Stylish. Flies for free on Ryanair. Lots of pockets!

Cons – Small capacity if flying with only one bag.

Size: 40 x 20 x 25cm Price: £35 (currently sold out, check here ) Recommended By: Kylie from Between England and Iowa

girl wearing a white raincoat and black carry on backpack turning to look at the camera on a path in a park

The Travel Hack Stowaway Backpack is a great carry on bag for female travellers. I t has a stylish black and rose gold design, making it look smarter than typical “backpacking” backpacks.

With a 20L capacity, the backpack is on the smaller size. However, it’s perfect for short breaks or for use as a cabin bag alongside checked luggage. The Travel Hack backpack fits within the dimensions of Ryanair’s underseat luggage allowance, so it’s guaranteed to fly for free on their flights.

There are eight pockets altogether. This includes: a 13inch laptop pocket, an easy access top pocket and an expandable water bottle compartment. Inside is a roomy main compartment with two smaller internal mesh pockets, great for organising everything.

In addition to the backpack, a matching compression packing cube is available to buy, which comes in the same pale pink as the internal material of the backpack.

Pros – Ryanair “personal item” size so no extra fees. Super lightweight (only 800grams). Fits a surprising amount. Laptop sleeve.

Cons – Quite small to use as your only bag (but doable).

Size: 40 x 20 x 25 cm Price: £29.95 – check here Recommended By: Me!

black carry on backpack in front of an orange suitcase and a bookshelf, it is the Cabin Max Chicago, one of the best carry on bags for women

I bought the Cabin Max Chicago backpack for my recent trip to Seville , to use as my underseat personal item on Ryanair alongside my larger cabin bag. It’s really compact and exactly fits the dimensions for a free item on all budget airlines, so it’s ideal for a cheap getaway in Europe !

The bag’s clever design really maximises on the space inside, so you can fit a surprising amount, and there are compression straps on the sides to help you get it all in.

I also loved the roomy back section, perfect for my laptop, which has three dividers to help keep things organised.

Pros – Lightweight. Comfortable – advanced ventilation system, adjustable padded anatomic shoulder straps and padded back, wide hip belt. Rain cover and hydration sleeve.

Cons – The Airstripes back padding is good, but the back can still get a little sweaty on demanding hikes.

Size: 50 x 24 x 20 cm Price: From £83.29 – check prices and colours here Recommended By: Milijana from World Travel Connector

girl with dark hair wearing a backpack sitting on a cliff edge overlooking the sea

Deuter Trans Alpine 24L backpack is the perfect hiking, travel, biking, and commuter backpack with many well-thought features. I’ve hiked 828 km of Camino de Santiago and carried all my Camino packing necessities in the backpack for a month.

It’s a perfect carry-on backpack which fits nicely under a plane seat and in a cabin luggage compartment. It’s lightweight and comfortable, with compartments practically everywhere! There’s a bottom compartment, a front compartment with a hidden pocket for valuables, the main storage compartment with a few small patches, elastic side pockets, two belt pockets for small daily necessities, an elastic compartment close to the back that fits a 15’’ laptop, an integrated removable rain cover, and a hydration sleeve.

I can not recommend Deuter Trans Alpine Unisex 24L backpack enough, especially to female travellers who want a lightweight, practical, comfortable, and versatile carry on backpack.

Pros – Comfy straps. Stylish design. Foldaway straps. Lots of pockets and organisation hacks. Hidden laptop compartment.

Cons – Only available in grey.

Size: 45 x 33 x 20cm Price: £96 Recommended By: Me – read my review here

Close up of a grey Arcido Saxon carry on backpack on a plain background

This is probably one of my favourite carry on bags for women. I’ve been using the Arcido Saxon backpack for the last two years, usually in conjunction with hold luggage, but it’s very roomy and works well for short breaks.

What I love about the Saxon backpack from Arcido is how well designed it is. The whole design is sleek, neat, and simple.

Plus, as with all the best backpacks, there’s an abundance of pockets, including a hidden laptop compartment along the back of the bag with a hidden zip. There’s also a discrete padded top pocket which is ideal for your phone and other valuables. This really is the perfect carry on backpack for safety-conscious ladies!

Pros – The inbuilt wardrobe system keeps everything organized. Super comfortable to wear. The Clamshell opening is awesome!

Cons – You may struggle to fit a laptop in when using the bag at full capacity.

Size: 50.8 x 30.5 x 19.1 cm Price: From £213 Recommended By: Cazzy from Dream Big Travel Far

The Tropicfeel Shell Backpack is the perfect carry on bag for a city break, or even longer adventures. The wardrobe system inside helps keep everything organized, especially if you’re a naturally messy person!

It can be expanded and reduced with ease, so it’s a great day bag as well as hand luggage. I also like that you can add on extra features, such as a toiletries bag, which makes this cabin backpack perfect for women!

The Tropicfeel Shell is genuinely comfortable to wear and I love that you can even fit in an extra pair of shoes with the expandable kangaroo pocket at the bottom of the bag!

Basically, if you’re a woman who likes to carry a lot of items while travelling this is a great cabin backpack if you want to stay organized!

Pros – Tons of great pockets for organization. Multiple zipper access points. Incredibly versatile (eg, can be converted to a 30L bag by closing two snaps).

Cons – Fairly expensive. Hip straps are not adjustable so may not fit all travellers. Shoulder straps aren’t comfortable for carrying heavy loads.

Size: 56cm x 33cm x 24cm (standard) Capacity: 30L min, 35L standard (max carry-on size), 45L max Price: £226.50 Recommended By: Jessica from Uprooted Traveler

girl wearing a white jumper, jeans and an orange hat with a large grey carry on backpack standing in front of trees looking away from camera

I’m a devout one-bag traveller and after looking for the right backpack for years, I have fallen in love with the Peak Design Travel Backpack . The bag is incredibly versatile, with tons of pockets and zippers that allow for easy organization and access, and backstraps that can be effortlessly tucked away so the bag can be carried like a duffel bag.

Given that I only travel with one bag, I love the ability to use the bag at its smaller 30L capacity and, when needed, expand it to the more beefy 45L, which is the maximum volume for most carry-ons.

Whether you’re a photographer like me, or a female traveller who is trying to keep a bunch of stuff organized, the clever design of this bag will be a lifesaver during your travels. Plus, I love the sleek, minimal design and find it looks a bit more professional than some other popular backpack choices.

Pros – Carry-on size. Water-resistant. Laptop compartment. Separate shoe compartment. Removable waist strap.

Cons – Space inside main compartment can feel limiting. Not great support for hiking.

Size: 23 x 53 x 36 cm Price: £249 NB – the brand is called Nomatic internationally Recommended By: Lora from Explore with Lora

girl wearing red jeans and a black vest top standing on the edge of a wooden balcony wearing a large black cabin backpack

I love the Gomatic 40L bag because it has so many features designed with the needs of digital nomads in mind. Every part of the bag has a function! The exterior side pockets and laptop sleeve keep my electronics safe and secure, while the bottom compartment is great for storing dirty shoes or laundry.

As a female traveller, I find the size of the bag perfect for my frame, and the adjustable waist straps make it easy to carry while it’s on my back. But it’s nice that they are removable as well, so I have the option to carry it as a duffle when needed. This bag meets all of my needs – and then some!

Pros – Opens like a suitcase. Lightweight frame (1.44kg). Compression straps inside and out. Multiple pockets and padded sleeve for laptop. Hideaway straps if you want to put it in the hold. Multiple ways to carry it, including side handle and shoulder strap.

Cons – Difficult to keep clean

Size: 54 x 35 x 23 cm Price: £76.45 Recommended By: Larch from The Silver Nomad

16 of the Best Carry On Bags + Backpacks for Women [2024]

The Osprey Fairview 40L carry on backpack is designed specifically for women and female travellers. It has padded shoulder straps that gently curve to fit a female body, as well as comfortably padded waist straps to help distribute the weight.

The backpack has a lightweight but sturdy frame, so it doesn’t take much of your carry on weight allowance. If you need to pop it in the hold, the straps zip away neatly.

Inside, the main section is very roomy, and the Fairview can be laid down and unzipped like a normal suitcase. It has a small top pocket for your essentials, as well as netted pockets on the front for carrying water bottles. Inside there’s a padded slot for a laptop as well as another full-sized pocket, which is useful for documents (or underwear!).

Pros – Maximizing carry-on dimensions. Looks good for any type of trip even flashpacking. Durable material. Tracking

Cons – Not waterproof (a waterproof cover is extra).

Size: 52 x 36 x 19cm Price: From £78.90 Recommended By: Veronika from Travel Geekery

girl wearing a mustard yellow carry on backpack with blonde hair in a lait standing next to a train track making the hitchhiking sign with her thumb out

I absolutely love my Cabinzero bag! I take it on most short trips around Europe and once even took it for two weeks in Costa Rica when travelling with a carry-on only.

I’ve had the Military Backpack 44L in Desert Sand for about 6 years now and it’s never disappointed. In fact, I even used it on a backpacking trip crossing the mountains of Bulgaria. I carried this backpack with everything for 4 days straight!

Cabinzero have several models that make great carry on bags for travel, but the Military model also features a waist strap. Even though I have a petite figure and a heavy load on my back normally leads to severe back pain, the Cabinzero backpack provides good support and hasn’t let me down.

However – if you like to have the insides of your backpack neatly organized, you’ll need to get packing cubes since the inside space is not divided.

Pros – Opens like a suitcase. Made of anti-theft material. Durable. Organization/pockets for cables & smaller items.

Cons – Straps might be uncomfortable for some travellers. Only basic colours.

Size: 55.1 x 35.1 x 22.1 cm Price: from £225 Recommended By: Mayuri from To Someplace New

open carry on bag filled with womens clothing and a large straw hat

The Pacsafe Venturesafe 45L is the perfect carry on backpack for safety conscious women. It’s made of anti-theft material, so it’s great for traveling in crowded touristy areas. I’ve used it on multiple trips to Europe and found it fits everything I need for up to three weeks.

I love that the backpack opens like a suitcase, so I can keep a large packing cube with clothing and outfit essentials inside. It has extra room to store hats, cosmetics, accessories or even a pair of shoes! The exterior part of the backpack has a very generous pocket, which I use to store charging cables, documents, etc.

Unlike some travellers, I actually like the straps, and feel that they are comfortable for long trips. I am 5’1″ and petite and it fits my body frame properly. The top handle makes it easy to hand carry the backpack when needed.

Best Carry On Camera Backpacks for Women

Pros – Protects camera gear well. Has both a hip and chest strap. Water bottle storage.

Cons – The miscellaneous storage pocket could be bigger.

Size: 31 x 26 x 50 cm Price: £104 Recommended By: Samantha from Intentional Detours

girl with dark hair wearing a camera backpack and hiking towards a snowy mountain

One of the best photography carry on backpacks for women is the Lowepro Fastpack BP 250. This pack has excellent protection for all your cameras and camera gear , so it’s perfect for hiking, travelling, or simply neatly storing electronics.

I’ve used this bag in various locations, including a glacial hike in Northern Pakistan. It truly showed its stuff when it kept all the gear I’d stored in the padded section unharmed even when it took a direct hit whilst breaking my fall!

Aside from having enough room for a full-frame camera and numerous lenses and accessories, the Lowepro Fastpack also has a heavily padded laptop slot. While not sweatproof, the back section is made of comfortable material.

What makes the Lowepro above the rest is that it’s as much of a photography bag as it is a functional hiking backpack. I particularly love that it comes with both a chest strap AND a decent waist strap. It also has numerous zipped portions and pockets for small/valuable items, and the water bottle holder comes with a zip-tie to make sure it won’t fall out!

Pros – Sleek and stylish design. Ample laptop and tech sleeves. Comes with rain cover and made from waterproof material. Optional padded camera cube + side access quickdraw for camera.

Cons – Bulky waist straps

Size: 43 x 28 x 17 cm (25L capacity with roll-top fully extended) Price: From £179  Recommended By: Haley of Haley Blackall Travel

The WANDRD PRVKE 21L backpack is an ideal carry-on and daypack for women because it combines an attractive sleek design with functionality. The bag offers double technology sleeves for carrying your laptop (up to a 16” MacBook Pro) and tablet or e-reader. The spacious compartment at the top with a flexible roll-down top is great for storing anything you may need on a flight.

The WANDRD PRVKE 21L also comes with an optional padded camera cube, and with the side access quickdraw for your camera, you don’t have to put your bag down on a muddy trail.

Waterproof materials and zippers make up the exterior of the bag with a complimentary rain cover that tucks away conveniently at the base of the backpack. The WANDRD bag also comes with all the added features like padded waist straps, hidden passport/cash pocket, key garage, and straps for external carry.

Pros – Sturdy. Comfortable. Removable padded dividers and side zipper for easier access.

Cons – It feels somewhat bulky when used as an everyday camera bag. Not waterproof.

Size: 30 x 22 x 52cm Price: £145 Recommended By: Maria & Katerina from It’s All Trip to Me

close up of a black Thule camera backpack on the edge of a boat with the sea and rocks in the background

The Thule Aspect DSLR Camera Backpack is easily one of the best carry on bags for women with a passion for photography. It can fit not only all your camera gear , but also everything you need for a weekend trip.

It’s the perfect size to be used both as an everyday camera bag and a compact carry on bag. Unlike most camera backpacks that are designed for men, the Thule Aspect DSLR feels less bulky, which makes it equally suitable for women. Moreover, the upper compartment has enough space for a female traveller’s personal items.

These days, many budget airlines only include a small cabin bag in the standard ticket fare, referred to as “underseat luggage” or a “personal item”. These are pretty small and have to fit under the seat in front of you.

If you want to take a larger carry on bag, you’ll need to pay extra. It’s also sometimes included if you pay for priority boarding or an upfront seat, so check out your options when booking your flight.

The tables below should give you a rough idea of what size cabin bags travellers can take on most budget flights from the UK. These are always subject to change, though, so be sure to double-check before booking anything…

First of all, there is nothing wrong with purchasing unisex or male backpacks at all. When buying a backpack, your main priority should always be a comfortable fit, no matter what your travel intentions are, so you can wear it all day.

Osprey Renn 50

Women’s travel bags are designed specifically with the female body shape and different weight-carry in mind. Padding, length, and straps are different from the male bags, which is crucial for a comfortable fit since the bag has to align with your center of gravity.

Bottom line: there are some great uni-sex backpacks, a few of which I have reviewed below, but I find ladies backpacks tend to be more comfortable when the weight starts stacking up

So without further talking, here are the top travel backpacks for women. From small to big, trendy, minimalistic or super durable, you’ll find everything right here!

#1 – Osprey Fairview 40

ladies travel rucksack uk

The Osprey Fairview 40 is one of the only female backpacks for travel designed   with women in mind. Greatly fitting and adjustable straps, the right amount of padding, and enough compartments to keep all your stuff secure. I love taking it on day hikes, and many female travelers I know use it as their main bag.

With 40L it’s suitable for carry-on luggage, however, the small volume doesn’t necessarily make it a great choice for long hiking trips. There are advanced-hiking style features built-in, like an extra harness and hip belt, but some reviews mentioned an uncomfortable fit when you load it up too heavy.

This pack is not as feature-rich as some of the other Ladies’ backpacks on the market. Overall, though, this is a fantastic carry-on travel backpack for women that can do a little bit of everything. It’s comfortable, durable, AND affordable, so you have nothing to lose.

  • Perfect carry on size
  • Lifetime Warranty
  • Affordable, especially for the quality
  • Not as feature-rich as other backpacks
  • Tries to do the hybrid thing, but I wouldn’t choose for hiking

The Osprey Fairview 40 may be the best backpack for you if:

Osprey Farpoint 40L Backpack

If you want a badass carry-on backpack – this is an easy pick. Its suspension system means it’s extremely comfortable when you have to walk a couple of miles down dirt roads or cobblestone streets! It’s one of the best backpacks for women specifically.

I rated this classic as their best women’s travel backpack because it just seems to kick all the boxes and it’s stood the test of time. I’ve brought this back to loads of countries, and I love the clamshell opening and the massive storage area which is a real game-changer when it comes to backpacks. I also love the extra detachable daypack on the larger version, this is a real bonus.

#2 – REI Recycled RuckPack 60L

ladies travel rucksack uk

REI’s rugged ladies rucksack is marketed as both a travel bag and a hiking bag – and I completely agree! This bag has plenty of organizational compartments and thought out innovation as well as a supportive back panel, ventilated mesh padding, and a sternum strap.

It’s designed with women-specific features for hiking including harness straps that curve around the chest, a shortened torso length, and longer hip belt strap. With 60L volume it also lives up to the carry-on standards – a perfect overall backpack! Whether you’re hiking the Alps or on a trip around Asia, this durable women’s travel pack has got you covered.

The compartments are easy to reach due to full-zip designs and multiple access points. The sleeve along the back panel is designed to hold a hydration sleeve or laptop. Even fully packed, it still sits incredibly comfortably. The coolest part is that it’s made out of recycled nylon – making it a responsible travel purchase.

  • Classic rucksack look
  • Good pocket organization
  • Great ventilation/back support
  • No laptop compartment
  • Preferable for hikers/campers
  • Might be too big for ultra-light campers

The REI Co-Op Rucksack may be the best pack for you if:

Looking for a 40-liter travel bag but on a bit of a budget? Then this is a fantastic option! The Ladies Rucksack is well-designed, comfortable, and durable. It will do everything you need it to for your travels or camping.

I rated this their second-best backpack because of just how comfortable this bag felt. It’s been really well designed for the female form and our team felt it offered next-level comfort compared to more standard bags.

Looking for something a bit smaller, check out the Rei Flash 55 Backpack instead.

#3 – REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack – Women’s

ladies travel rucksack uk

While Osprey seems to make backpacks for hiking or travel specifically, the REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack is a hybrid model. It features a suspension system, padded hip belt, and shoulder straps designed specifically for a woman’s build. Moreover, its front pocket. top stash pocket and included rain cover make it perfect for any kind of travel.

It’s a good overall pack: carry-on compliant and comfortable enough for multi-day hikes, but I would try this pack versus the REI Recycled RuckPack 60L and see which one fits you better.

Keep in mind that the woman-specific bag is slightly smaller than the men’s, but fits on budget airlines. I didn’t have a problem using this bag on Ryan Air, the ultimate test for carry-on size compliance.

  • U-shaped panel opening with 4 zipper sliders
  • Carry on compliant
  • Woman-specific
  • The suspension system is not as good as other hiking-specific backpacks
  • No laptop section
  • Front packet designed more for light travel

The REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack may be the best for you if:

Overall, you should get the REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack if you plan to travel, train hop, and do a few multi-day hikes. I wouldn’t get it if your main objective is urban travel nor if your main objective is backcountry hiking. It does both well, so if you want a pack that can do it all, then this is a good choice.

I felt this was one of their best travel packs for women because I loved just how well thought out the pack was in so many different aspects. The opening, hip belt pockets, and included rain cover are really cool features. I also loved the additional pockets all over the pack, they really add to the storage, organisation and accessibility.

#4 – Kodiak Katmai Diaper Bag

Kodiak Diaper Bag

Don’t let the name fool you, this leather daypack by Kodiak can hold a lot more than diapers! Whilst it may be marketed at new moms, this backpack doubles up wonderfully as a travel daypack which is perfect for city exploration, non-technical hikes and airport runs.

Kodiak makes high-quality products that do not come cheap. The pack is made from Top-Grain cowhide and features 3 zippered compartments. There are 2 handy side pockets and a carrying handle for when you don’t want to use it as a backpack.

Finally, the Katmai has a padded rear zippered compartment on the back of the bag plus a luggage strap.

You should get the Kodiak Diaper Bag if you want something primarily for urban use that can handle lite-hikes. But I definitely wouldn’t get it if your main objective is backcountry hiking at altitude.

Kodiak also makes one of the best travel purses on offer too which would be a great compliment to this bag and help keep your passport and documents organised when you’re travelling from place to place.

I felt this was their best women’s daypack for travel if style and functionality are your goals . I loved the quality and feel of the soft but durable leather exterior. Combined with the number of external pockets, it’s not only a good-looking bag, but a super practical one too.

  • Quality leather
  • Carry handle
  • Simple & stylish
  • Not ideal for hiking
  • Limited capacity

#1 – Nomatic 30L Travel Bag

Nomatic 30L Travel Bag

My favourite carry-on pack is this little doozy from Nomatic. Custom-designed for long weekend breaks of 2 -4 days, this pack is equally useful for a long weekend as it is a trip to the store.

It’s 30 liters, making it carry-on compliant just about everywhere. The bag’s tarpaulin and ballistic weave materials mean this travel backpack will last you for years to come.

Whether you are traveling for a business trip to Dubai or you are a Digital Nomad forever on the go, this will keep your laptop and valuables well secured all while looking stylish. Plus, you’ll have more pockets and sleeves than you know what to do with.

Its top features include an RFID Safe Pocket, Roller Bag Sleeve, a dedicated Underwear Pocket, Cord pass through, easy access pocket, water bottle pocket, an Innovative strap system and waist straps.

This is a unisex bag as most carry-on packs tend to be. It isn’t exactly feminine looking but maybe one days we’ll stop thinking a colour or inclusion of flowers is feminine in the first place!

  • Modern and sleek
  • Endless features
  • Organization Galore
  • Not Fememine
  • Is 30L enough?
  • Only available in the US!

The Nomatic Travel Pack may be the best for you if:

If you are a contemporary traveler spending a lot of time in urban environments, the Nomatic Travel Pack is a good choice. This pack was designed specifically to be used as carry on whilst also been a great day pack for walking around cities.

I felt this was the best carry-on backpack for women . I love that for a smaller bag, it still opens up in a clamshell style and features a heap of different organisational features including the special layered compartment full of pockets.

Sadly, Nomatic only ship to the US. If you are in the rest of the world, see the next entry from AER.

#2 – Tortuga Outbreaker

tortuga outbreaker vs setout

The real perks of the Tortuga Outbreaker are in its design. It has tons of pockets/compartments, and the main compartment is massive with the capacity to carry a ton of clothes. The Outbreaker design enables its the main compartment to be opened like a suitcase.

Inside the main compartment are six smaller compartments. The first four smaller compartments are enclosed within the main compartment.

This isn’t specifically a ladies backpack but designed to be uni-sex. That said, it’s quality build, intuitive design, fantastic organization, and smaller size make it the perfect bag for anyone who wants to travel light, but travel in style. I find it great for both city breaks where I need my laptop, or even moderate hikes that don’t require too much gear.

  • Organization
  • Rectangular shape
  • Urban Travel Only

The Tortuga Outbreaker may be the best for you if:

This is one of the top backpacks for women and men. It is perfect if you want a carry on backpack that keeps your things organized and secure.

I loved the rugged hard wearing feel of this pack and how well it stood up to long term travel. They felt it has a high quality feel to the material and were confident keeping their gear in here even in wet weather.

#3 – AER Travel Pack 3

aer travel pack 2 backpack

My number two choice for the best carry on, as well as the best overall travel backpack (whether you’re a woman or man) is the AER Travel Pack 3 . I have yet to find a travel backpack as feature-packed as this one.

AER bags are designed to be modern, sleek, and provide ultimate packing efficiency. This is accomplished by an extremely thoughtful design and tons of features that will be fully appreciated by anyone who travels a lot.

  • Urban environments only
  • Not woman-specific

The AER Travel Pack 3 may be the best for you if:

If you are a modern traveler who spends a lot of time in urban environments, the AER Travel Pack is going to be one of the best backpacks for you. This pack was designed specifically for people who live on the road.

I felt it was one of the best travel backpacks in this roundup and for basically anyone travelling because with a separate laptop pocket at the back of the bag, clamshell opening and a second large pocket full of organisational features, it’s a dream for those of us with OCD! It’s also a bag that just oozes rugged quality too.

#4 – Peak Design Travel Backpack

main compartment of Peak Design travel backpack

This bag is great for anyone who likes its design, efficiency, and organization. It’s easily one of the best minimalist bags on the market.

What sets this pack apart from AER is its access points and style of organization. This pack was also designed to accommodate photographers with camera gear. With the external and internal pockets you can keep all of your belongings organized and safe.

The volume might be a bit too small if you’re carrying a lot of equipment with you, which makes it more suitable for urban areas. A lot of full-time travelers can make 40-45L work for extended trips, while others will need more space, personally, I think it’s a great small travel backpack for women.

  • Durable in every way
  • Straps are really easy to stow
  • Accessibility and pockets
  • Zippers are not heavy duty

The Peak Design 40 Liter Backpack may be the best for you if:

Peak Design is leading the pack in innovation and design; if you want an ultra-modern and sleek backpack, look no further. This is a versatile, urban-style backpack perfect for city trips and weekend getaways.

As a photographer, I really loved this pack and felt it stood out amongst the options as the best for those of us with plenty of gear. The design of the bag will keep your equipment safe and accessible while also providing plenty of room for your other things, too.

#5 – Tropicfeel Shell Backpack

ladies travel rucksack uk

While this might not be a backpack specifically made for women, it definitely deserves a spot on this list.

Let’s be honest, having everything put away neatly can be a full-on game-changer when travelling via airplane. That’s when the Tropicfeel Shell Backpack really starts to shine.

Tropicfeels flagship product, the Shell, is a small to medium backpack sized with big ambitions. First up, it is a 3-1 extendable backpack that starts out as a 22 litre pack, then rolls up to 30 litres before the addition of a detachable pouch turns it into a 40 litre titan – how cool is that?!

Aside from being a 3-in-1 adjustable backpack, which you can adapt to use as a day pack, overnight pack and carry-on pack, the Shell also has another novel feature; its detachable hanging packing cube which acts as a portable, pre-loaded travel wardrobe. Unpacking and packing your backpack has never been this easy.

While you’re on the road, the compartment system keeps all of your belongings organized and neatly put away, so you can easily access everything without leaving a mess afterwards.

  • Really fucking versatile
  • Truly novel and unique
  • Packs up easily
  • Not big enough for big trips
  • Not cheap (yet not expensive)

The Tropicfeel Shell may be the best bag for you if:

If you want to keep all of your belongings organized, be flexible with the volume of your backpack and tick off the sleek-style box, the Tropicfeel Sheel is ideal for you. It’s also great for minimal packers who like everything to have a place.

I really love Tropical Feel bags and this bag is the cream of the crop. The internal organiser might look like a gimmick but, it was fantastic! They felt it was really well designed and meant they could pack in so much more and keep things organised at the same time.

These are the best travel backpacks for women who spend a lot of time on trail.

#1 – Osprey Tempest 40L

ladies travel rucksack uk

The Osprey Tempest 40 Pack is highly functional and fully-featured that works for pretty much any occasion. It’s the best small hiking backpack on this list. It’s been with me for thousands of kilometers now (literally) and it’s not so big that you feel like a weighed-down turtle… BUT it can still carry a WHOLE LOT of epic gear!

With 40L it’s a go-to pack for 3-5 day hiking trips because of its size, weight, and durability. I’ve taken it to heights of up to 15,000 feet, and it’s the perfect bag for light packers. Features include an incredible suspension system (so comfortable and breathable), padded and adjustable shoulder straps and hip belt, external hydration sleeve, tuck-away ice tool loops/trekking pole attachments, and an integrated rain cover.

When it comes to travel and hiking, this is going to be one of the most versatile, small backpacks for women. The Osprey Tempest 40 is also quite affordable when you consider the quality and versatility you get!

  • Versatile for hiking and camping
  • Very comfortable suspension system
  • Affordable for quality
  • Not as many features for travel; more hiking specific
  • 40L will work for most airlines, but not all

The Osprey Tempest 40 Pack may be the best for you if:

Osprey specializes in producing a range of backpacks for very specific activities and practical applications, from long trips to urban travel, to commuting, running, and school. Specificity is great, but sometimes you just want a backpack that works for everything rather than buying a backpack for every occasion.

This is one of the most versatile women’s rucksacks for hiking you’ll find. Your closet space, bank account, and the planet will thank you for buying fewer backpacks. It’s well-ventilated with heaps of room, and definitely one of the most comfortable bags I’ve taken on long hikes.

#2 – Osprey Aura AG 50

Osprey Aura 50 best travel backpacks for women

The Osprey Aura 50 is the best female travel backpack to hit the trails with. It’s also ideal for long term, slow travel as it can literally fit everything! Its unique Anti-Gravity suspension system makes this bag comfortable up to 40 lbs! I recommend comparing it to the Tempest above and figuring out which women’s rucksack is best for you.

Features include water bottle pockets, compression straps, anti-gravity suspension system, and multiple organization options.

  • Comfortable suspension system
  • High-quality
  • Not as many features for travel (more hiking specific)
  • 50L is often not carry-on compliant

The Aura 50 Liter may be the best for you if:

Overall, you should get the Osprey Aura 50 if you are traveling in a variety of weather (humidity and snow), and hike and backpack often. This backpack will be a great fit if you are looking for a high-quality backpack that can handle wear and tear deep in the wildest mountain ranges.

The team really loved how well this bag could be used to organised their gear even for a hiking pack. Another cool feature for the trails was the anti-gravity waist belt, they loved just how comfortable this made the pack even when fully packed and worn on a tough full day hike on challenging terrain.

#3 – Osprey Women’s Backpack Ariel Plus 60

Osprey Womens Backpack Ariel Plus 60

Are you noticing a trend here?

I may be biased, but Osprey is my favorite brand when it comes to durable and ultra-comfortable hiking backpacks.

This backpack is probably overkill for most, but if you plan to travel with a ton of gear for a long time, or hit the trails for a week (my favorite pasttime) then this is an excellent pack that will last you for years and years to come.

Ultimately, Ariel has an incredible suspension system and tons of customizability when it comes to its compression straps, hip belt, and shoulder straps. This means that it provides great stabilization and weight carry for heavy loads (think over 35 pounds.)

  • Extremely Durable
  • Comfortable for heavy loads
  • Best for women on long treks
  • Too big for most travelers

The Osprey’s Ariel Plus 60 may be the best backpack for you if:

Osprey Ariel 60

If you are looking for a heavy-duty Osprey women’s backpack that is durable enough to take long journeys across rough terrain, then this is the perfect bag for you. If you only plan to go on hiking trips for a few days, or travel by plane and train frequently, then consider one of the Auras instead.

Essentially, the Aura is better for loads under 30 pounds, and the Ariel for heavier ones. If you know how much weight you plan to carry, let that be the determining factor when deciding between these packs.

I was super impressed by this bag and specifically how well it maintained its comfort and weight distribution for a bigger pack than the other Osprey bags they tested. I found the straps and hip belts easily adjustable for different sizes and shapes too. I also found the bag to have a strong and durable feel.

Best Travel Bag with Wheels –  Osprey Fairview 65 Wheeled Travel Pack

ladies travel rucksack uk

Designed for the savvy traveler, Osprey’s Fairview 65 Wheeled Travel Pack is pretty much one of the best backpacks with wheels out there.

The padded hip-belt and shoulder harness stow away for easy transport. It can clip on to the wheeled range for easy transport. It even has an inside zipped compartment – perfect for smelly hiking boots!

I’ve been using this pack on and off for two years and can comfortably say that it fits a shocking amount of stuff, but it’s not comfortable to wear when the load is super heavy.

This is one of the best backpacks for travel if you have a ton of valuables, but it’s not good for hiking!

  • Carry On Size
  • Not a trekking backpack
  • Not comfortable with heavy loads

The Osprey Fairview 65 Wheeled Travel Pack may be the best bag for you if:

If you want a women’s travel backpack with wheels, then this is the pack for you. The backpack feature is great for dirt roads, cobblestone, stairs, and other situations where you can’t wheel it, but it’s not comfortable to wear for long periods. Get this backpack if you plan to primarily wheel it around.

I loved the versatility of this bag and how it could function just as well as a suitcase and a backpack. I felt there was very little compromise when using the pack in either setup and the wheels didn’t add too much weight. I also loved how high quality the wheels in particular felt but also the fact that you can buy replacements when needed.

Patagonia Refugio 30L

This is an awesome, small hiking backpack. It’s a high-quality and durable pack made by one of our favorite brands, Patagonia. It’s a great go-to backpack for your everyday life as well, as it’s suitable for short-time travel and urban areas.

It is custom-tailored in both size and fit for a woman’s torso. Like a school backpack, it has a second zippered pocket for smaller items and accessories, a front stash pocket for small items, and the main compartment for your things.

It’s ultra-soft yet highly breathable. This is a small travel backpack ideal for shorter trips. Its internal pocket secures a laptop so it makes for a great city bag as well – I loved taking it around Bangkok! Another great feature is the daisy chain loops that allow you to attach climbing gear or a yoga mat.

  • Versatile for normal use or hiking
  • Perfect for organization
  • Uses recycled materials
  • Only for the minimalist traveler
  • Sport look may not appeal to some
  • No waist strap

Is the Patagonia Refugio for me?

This ladies’ small backpack is perfect for everyday use. Whether you want to hit the trails in the rain or bike to your local coffee shop with your laptop, this backpack is an awesome choice!

I loved this bag as a day pack and loved the combination of its compact size and surprisingly spacious interior. I also felt this bag is uniquely suited for petite women – something I haven’t seen in the day pack market before!

lightweight backpack for women

This women’s rucksack was specifically designed for ultralight hiking, though at 60-liters, this pack is in the mid to large > size spectrum.

60-liters is enough volume for a multi-month backpacking trip, or for an extended hiking trip (about 3-7 days depending on how much warm clothing, food, and water – if any – you need to carry).

This is one of the lightest hiking backpacks on the market. While this is awesome, I wanted to know what we are sacrificing for weight. After testing this pack, I concluded that its lightweight fiber materials are durable and will last for years, just not as long as other more heavy-duty Osprey packs.

Plus, Osprey offers the “All Mighty Guarantee” lifetime warranty to indemnify against defects.

  • Extremely Lightweight
  • Perfect for Thru-hikes and minimalists
  • Osprey Lifetime Warranty
  • Not carry on sized
  • Made for hiking versus travel
  • The lighter color shows dirt and marks

The Lumina 60 may be the best for you if:

ladies travel rucksack uk

This is one of the most lightweight backpacks for women. It is specifically designed for ultralight thru-hikes, so unless that is your speciality, I recommend choosing a different pack. A couple of the Osprey backpacks above are excellent choices for hiking and travel.

I’m a huge fan of the brand if you hadn’t guessed and this pack is no exception. Of course, I really loved the insane level of lightweightness (is that a word?!) of this backpack. Despite the featherlight construction of the bag, it still doesn’t skimp out on features like retaining a suspension mesh back panel and plenty of exterior pockets.

Best Camera Backpack –  WANDRD PRVKE

wndrd prvke 31 review best travel backpacks for women

For those who want a backpack that can do a little bit of everything, is durable and looks damn good in the process, the WANDRD PRVKE is an excellent investment. Ranging from 21-41 liters, this backpack can hold quite a bit, though isn’t as large as we’d like for travel.

Thanks to its robust weather-resistant design, your belongings will be safe. Add in some customizable straps, plenty of pockets, and a sick design, and you have yourself a versatile travel backpack. It’s not a backpack specifically made for women, so the fit might not be the best.

It is stylish and functional enough for the streets, but its padding and additional straps make it comfortable enough for the trails.

  • Awesome camera backpack
  • Waterproof and durable
  • Organization galore
  • Too small for one bag travel
  • Not women-specific
  • Not the best option if you don’t have camera gear

The Wandrd PRVKE may be the best for you if:

If you are traveling with camera gear, then this is one of the best packs for you. However, if photography isn’t one of your priorities on your travel, then check out one of the other travel backpacks for women above.

Again, our photographers on the team just fell in love with this bag and for many of them it became their go-to day pack… including me! The system of pockets, separators and cubes on the inside of the bag is in a word, revolutionary! I love how I can keep my camera gear in a cube at the bottom which is accessible from the side door whilst keeping all my other gear in the expandable roll top section above. The material is also super water resistant too so great for the outdoors.

A lot of practical, travel gear tends to be a bit on the ugly side. Indeed the general consensus is “comfort before style” when it comes to most travel gear whether it be backpacks, jackets or shoes but today I am here to tell you that it does not need to be this way.

The Explorer by MAHI Leather is a stylish, cool, and pretty travel backpack for those ladies who want to look the part whilst having an adventure. It’s made from soft leather (which smells lovely) and fastens with a mixture of zips and buckles. It’s a great backpack for airport runs, hitting the beach, market, and of course nights on the tiles.

It’s not ideal as a hiking backpack but could certainly work for day hikes in fine weather when no special gear is required. I did feel the comfort of the shoulder straps was slightly compromised for the sake of looks. But as it’s on the smaller side it probably wasn’t going to be used for packing heaps of gear anyway.

  • High quality leather
  • Looks gorgeous
  • Not a hiking pack
  • Limited storage
  • Not fully water proof

Best Laptop Backpack –  Tortuga 40L Travel Pack

Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L

This one is pretty obvious – the Tortuga Travel Backpack is great for…. laptops! But seriously, if you are looking for a  sturdy pack to carry your laptop around  – look no further, this bad boy is as good as it gets.

Tortuga put a lot of time and effort into the laptop-features of this backpack, all of which are designed specifically to keep your gear safe, organized, and accessible.

The design and features of this backpack make it perfect for air travel. Whether it’s the sleek laptop sleeve, the easy to lock zippers, the luggage handle pass-through or the hideaway shoulder straps – this bag thrives in airports.

  • Perfect for laptops
  • Excellent organization
  • Feature-rich
  • Only for the techie traveler

Is the Tortuga Travel Pack for me?

tortuga travel backpack

If you are looking for a travel backpack then the Tortuga 40L is a great choice for you.

Most of our team are digital nomads and they loved how this bag really gave them confidence when it came to keeping their laptop and other expensive gear save. Two of the main reasons for that were the lockable zips that made sure everything was secure and on top of that the durable and waterproof materials on the exterior.

Nomatic Travel Pack

The Nomatic Travel Pack is another great offering from this brand! While not designed just for us, it is still one of the best small backpacks for women and wears pretty comfortably.

This 20-liter daypack can be expanded to 30 liters, making it extremely adaptable for travel… if you travel light. An internal zip-shut mesh divider means you can keep clean and dirty clothing separate, and there are a compression packing cube and separate shoe compartment incorporated.

If that wasn’t enough, the bag also contains a sleeve for a laptop of up to 15” which is TSA approved as it lays flat, hidden pockets, and a pocket with RFID-blocking technology for the protection of your electronic data!

  • Internal divider
  • RFID-blocking pocket
  • Weight of 1.9 kg

Is the Nomatic Travel Pack for me?

Nomatic Travel Bag 40 L

The 20+10 liter Nomatic Travel Pack is a great alternative to the 40-liter Nomatic travel bag I’ve reviewed. This pack has a wealth of features for such a small space. If you don’t need a pack quite as big as the Nomatic travel bag, then this is an excellent choice.

I love how this bag expanded and they felt it really gave them options when travelling. Somehow was still so compact despite the fact that it can expand to a really decent size. Rather than carrying a larger 30L bag, they felt the fact they could just expand when needed was a real bonus.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

When selecting the best backpack for females there are a few things you should consider, including size and capacity, features, and price. This is all, of course, completely subjective and depends on the type of travel you will be engaging in.

Best Travel Backpack for Women

Capacity and Overall Size

  • Choose the size according to your travel gear
  • 40-50L are manageable, count as carry on and it’s an overall best choice
  • 60+L are great for camping, hiking and long travels

Note: Ladies backpacks are often smaller than the counterpart men’s version. For example, a men’s version can be 44 liters while the women’s is 40 liters. Women’s packs are also a bit narrower to better fit a smaller frame. You may be trading-off fit for capacity.

Torso Size and Length

Backpacks for travel have a torso measurement to help you find one that will have the most comfortable fit. Most women’s torsos will be between 14-18 inches, however, you should measure your torso and try a few packs on (with weight) to make sure.

osprey measuring guide

If you’re a taller woman, then maybe a uni-sex backpack will fit you better. Again, the trick is to measure and try packs in-store.

Shoulder Strap Shape and Hip Belt

In women-specific backpacks, the shoulder straps are often shaped/curved and the sternum strap is redesigned to better fit female chests. The shoulder straps are often set a little closer together since women tend to have narrow shoulders and neck.

The hip belt should be slightly narrower than the male’s version to distribute the weight equally across your hips. They can also have extra padding for a bit more comfort.

walking in australia

Don’t underestimate the importance of a comfortable hip belt. This is what helps take weight off of your shoulder so you can walk, hike, and climb comfortably, even with 35+ pounds.

Materials and Durability

Keep in mind, your travel bag will be exposed to rain, puddles or leaks at some point. There’s nothing worse than opening the bag to find your clothes soaked or your electronics damaged. The best backpacks are made from strong, durable, stretchy, waterproof material.

Look out for a material that will last for years – the last thing you want is a ripped bag halfway through your travels.

ladies travel rucksack uk

To test these packs, I laid my hands on each of them and took them out for a test drive on many different trips in various locations and over a decent period of time to get to know the product properly.

Packability

A backpack is designed to carry your stuff, so well we tested just that! Top points were awarded for how packable each backpack is in practical use. Any decent carry on bag also needs to make sure it maximises the space and facilitates effective packing and we tested this out by doing exactly what you normally do with a bag … pack and unpack the thing!

On top of that, I also looked at whether the bag was actually easy to pack and unpack. Was it awkward to retrieve your gear, or were things at hand when you needed them?

Weight and Comfort of Carrying

Everyone knows the nightmare of getting stuck with a super heavy backpack on a trip. It’s not fun! So I judged these bags hard on whether they were heavy or awkward because ain’t nobody got time for either of those!

I also looked at whether a bag was comfortable to carry. Were the straps thin and digging into your shoulders, or were they like resting your worldly goods on two pillows from heaven?

As such, I awarded full marks for packs that minimise weight and maximum carry comfort.

Functionality

In order to test out how well a pack fulfilled its primary purpose, ya know, holding shiz, by erm … using it for exactly that! Science amirite?!

So basically, if it was for carry-on, then I carried it the f**k on right! In this case, being Women’s backpacks, well, we got hold of a whole heap of women and made them wear the bags!! Well, something like that!

You get the idea right?

We all like to look good and not like absolute nerds when we’re out and about exploring the world. I mean, who knows if you’re going to meet someone fit on the trails, you’ve got to look your best! Well, I mean, my effort pretty much ends here but if I can get a cool-looking bag that functions well then I’m buzzin’!

As such I also awarded points for how sexy a pack looks.

Durability and Weatherproofing

Ideally, in order to really test out how durable a backpack is we would drop it from a plane and then run over it. Unfortunately, our budget doesn’t quite cover that, so we’ve had to resort to old-school tactics!

Instead, we simply inspected the materials used and the build quality of the packs paying attention to things like the seam sewing, the traction of the zips, and other pressure points that might be more likely to break.

Of course, testing out how waterproof a pack is simply a case of pouring a litre of water over it – any packs caught leaking, were banished to the depths of hell never to be seen again!

Still have some questions? No problem! I listed and answered the most commonly asked questions about women’s travel packs below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What makes travel backpacks for women different from other backpacks?

Women’s torsos are a bit shorter. Hence why travel backpacks for women are built slightly more narrow and not as long. The hip belts are also designed differently so it fits more comfortably.

What is the most comfortable travel backpack?

The Osprey Tempest 40 Pack is one of the most comfortable travel backpacks. It’s made for long hiking trips, which is why fit, size, weight, and durability are perfectly balanced.

Should I get a unisex travel backpack?

If the dimensions fit your back comfortbaly and you prefer a more balanced design, a unisex backpack is a great option. In that case, I’d recommend the AER Travel Pack 3 .

What is the most fashionable backpack for women?

Style always depends on personal preferences, but I love the design of the Nomatic 30L Travel Bag best!

Daypacks are simple, like a backpack that carries my work laptop when I am working remotely and traveling . Other daypacks are comfortable small backpacks that I want to be my personal item for a flight. The daypacks for women below would be my backpacks for a day of sightseeing on vacation.

Troubadour Ki Backpack

This small and stylish daypack is not too big, and fits a laptop, all while looking good . At only 10L, this daypack is like a purse. This is good for if I’ve been out from “day to night,” and I want to look great, or match my bag with a nicer outfit for dinner.

Troubadour is a company I really like for its sustainability practices. When I tried the Ki Backpack , I was floored with the ultimate lightweight factor of this bag, along with the pockets, materials and trustworthy quality.

I have so many positive things to say about this bag that they won’t all fit here! Head on over to my detailed review of the Ki Backpack to see more photos of me using this travel backpack for women.

  • Sustainable materials made of recycled plastic and vegan leather.
  • Fits most laptops and has mesh and zipper pockets for everyday items.
  • Functions as a cute and classic day-to-night travel backpack.
  • Priced at $200+ (but worth it because this little backpack is PERFECT!)
  • Not big enough to fit a jacket or outfit changes.

Experience sophisticated storage with the Troubadour Ki Backpack, built for both professional settings and adventurous trips.

Away Everywhere Zip Backpack & Front Pocket Backpack

Away’s daypack is sleek, trendy, stylish and fashionable. The Away Everywhere Zip Backpack has been my personal item on a flight during travel. I’ve also used it as my go-to daytime backpack while on vacation.

Away also makes a smaller backpack with a front pocket ! In this review about the Away Daypack , I review the original style as one of the best daypacks for female travel, because it’s slim, not bulky, not “doofy” and has plenty of inner pockets that I value.

Away updated the backpack since I’ve reviewed it! The updates are great improvements to this daypack that comes in a convenient size and looks more stylish and elegant than ever.

  • Great style and design. At 20L (17L for the Front Pocket Backpack), it feels light and has plenty of room for daily stuff.
  • Has a laptop sleeve, trolley sleeve, fits a 15” laptop and qualifies as a personal item on a flight.
  • Limited color choices.
  • At $195, it’s expensive, but Away offers a 100-day trial, and free shipping, for you to try it out, commitment-free.

Away Everywhere Zip Backpack

Journey in style with the Away Everywhere Zip Backpack, your compact companion for everyday use.

United by Blue (R)evolution 15L Commuter Backpack

I enjoy using this slim 15L commuter backpack. It’s not too wide, and it’s very compact. It’s a slimming shape for a travel bag, and looks good on a short woman like me. This backpack is impressively lightweight, so the starting weight is almost nothing before you put your first item in.

The (R)evolution 15L backpack comes at an affordable price for a quality bag, and it’s vegan and water-resistant. It fits my MacBook Air perfectly. It also fits Dan’s 14” MacBook Pro snugly. The interior laptop sleeve is padded for a little bit of protection.

When packing for a trip , I like the idea of bringing a smaller backpack within a larger suitcase. Because there’s not a lot of padding in the (R)evolution 15L, it’s packable into a larger piece of luggage, which is a plus.

  • Sufficient pockets for keeping small items organized.
  • Lightweight enough to pack in larger luggage during travel.
  • Under $100 and pretty affordable. As a bonus, there’s a Lifetime Guarantee.
  • Ideal “personal item” on a flight, at its 15L size. I used it when I went to Canada.
  • Fits small laptops (13” approx.) in a padded pocket. Larger laptops won’t fit.
  • With spot clean care, it’s not exactly recommended to be machine-washable.
  • It does NOT have water bottle side pockets. This bothers me a little.

Step into sustainability with the United by Blue (R)evolution 15L Commuter Backpack, designed for the eco-conscious traveler.

Troubadour Momentum Backpack

I like the symmetrical and calming design of the Momentum Backpack . I’ve been enjoying that my Momentum Backpack has both function and style, for a woman traveler like me.

The Momentum Backpack is a sleek backpack that makes an excellent “personal item” for a flight, as well as a daypack when you’re on a trip. For features, I appreciate the high-quality zippers that don’t snag (signature for Troubadour products), the dedicated laptop compartment with its own exterior zipper and inner sleeve, and the loads of organizer pockets in the main compartment where I stash my essentials.

It’s a 13L-volume bag that’ll do well either for work or play. I really like the thick top handle, which is handy for if I need to hold my backpack by a top handle when I’m crunched on a subway or metro car. The zipper pulls are also nice and long, and the whole bag is lightweight, which I appreciate as a petite woman. I have a LOT of things to say about this backpack, which you can see at my Troubadour Momentum Backpack review here.

  • Awesome materials like neoprene, recycled lightweight polyester and vegan leather.
  • Great minimalist design. Perfect daypack size. Troller sleeve for a suitcase handle. Loads of useful pockets.
  • The laptop compartment fits two laptops : perfect if I have a work laptop and a personal laptop (or a laptop and a tablet).
  • Laptop compartment and front zip compartment have single zippers, but double zips would’ve been nice.
  • It “only” comes in three colors for now: black, navy and khaki.

Satisfy your adventure needs with the Troubadour Momentum Backpack, perfect for exploring urban jungles and beyond.

Quince All-Day Neoprene Backpack

What went through my head when I took this backpack out of its packaging was, “Woohoo! I’m finally one of those people with a trendy neoprene backpack!” Quince’s Neoprene Backpack is cute, and sits well on my back. This backpack is pretty squishy and light, so I can squish it into my Quince suitcase if I want to pack it and take it out when my flight lands.

One unique travel feature on this bag is the detachable “valuables” pouch. This inner neoprene pouch is attached by a cord, and helps protect against pickpockets and theft. I’m going to keep my typical on-the-go stuff in there, whether valuable or not.

The backpack is 16L in volume, with travel features like a luggage pass-through sleeve, a 13” laptop pocket sleeve for my Macbook Air and the detachable 7” zipper pouch. At just under $100, it’s affordable.

ladies travel rucksack uk

Bonus idea: Pair it with Quince’s Neoprene belt bag from the same collection. I featured it in my list of the best travel fanny packs .

Made from recycled materials, this lightweight and flexible backpack has essential travel features and some surpise bonus aspects.

Moment MTW Backpack 17L

This minimal travel laptop backpack quickly became a favorite for me! It’s not too big, and not too small. At 17L, it’s a nice daypack size for essentials and it has a clean modern look.

The folks at Moment started with creating camera lenses for phones and have branched out into making photography gear, photography backpacks and now, tote bags and sling bags. We feature the Moment Fanny Sling in our roundup of the best fanny packs for travel .

Warehouse returns are now on sale at 15% off (never used, just open box!); plus, get free shipping on US orders over $98.

The MTW backpack is cool for “going anywhere” or bringing your work with you. I like this backpack so far for day trips. For women travelers who may travel with a travel camera , note that the interior of this backpack is made for safely storing tech like lenses, chargers, headphones and more essentials.

For travel, there’s also a trolley pass-through, for being airport-ready. You can see how it looks on me (I’m 5’2”).

Moment debuted a new laptop and photography bag that’s going to be replacing this one, and it comes in the same sizes. Check out our Moment Everything Backpack review .

  • Cushioned laptop compartment with space for two laptops, or a laptop and a tablet.
  • Designed to stand up on its own and not topple over if you set it down.
  • The laptop zipper can be a little stiff from time to time.
  • Some people might get annoyed by the flap that goes over the zipper of the main compartment.

Carry your tech essentials with ease with the Moment MTW Backpack 17L, offering unparalleled durability and style.

Up Seoul Lifestyle Daypack by Deuter

I’ve been using the Up Seoul Daypack for about six months now. I liked how it’s streamlined and chilled-out. For features, I like the zipper-around flap and the two side pockets. They fit a slim water bottle and a dedicated laptop compartment (for computers up to 15”).

One thing I appreciate about the size of this travel daypack is that it’s narrow, which, if you see below in the large backpack section, is also true for Deuter’s women’s large-scale travel backpack of 60+10L (70L). It’s both urban and neutral: cool for the city, or camping.

The Up Seoul Daypack is described as 16+10L, meaning it has an overall capacity of 26L. For me, it works well as a commuter bag or a daypack for a road trip or vacation. I can fit a light jacket, some food for during the day, a book and a slim pair of shoes.

  • Eco-friendly (100% recycled material and Green Button Certified) product.
  • Narrow (rather than wide) shape that looks slimming for women.
  • Zipper-around closure top flap (GREAT for being theft-proof in cities).
  • Side pockets do NOT fit wide water bottles.
  • Bottom waist strap can’t be stowed away, so it hangs out and can look ‘strappy.’

Take the city by storm with the Up Seoul Lifestyle Daypack by Deuter, a classic and functional companion for urban exploration.

Small Expandable Knack Pack

The smallest Knack Pack from Knack Bags is a 15L backpack designed to be a go-to on a daily commute. It fits a 13” laptop and has a dedicated bottom storage compartment dedicated to holding your laptop charger and plug.

I tried out the small Knack Pack both as a day bag to take to work, and as a daypack for a day trip out to Long Island. What’s important to know about this bag is that it expands quickly out to 27L, to fit some minimalist-style needs for an entire weekend trip. It’s meant to convert fast from one size to the next.

The knack backpack on a train platform

You can see lots more detail in our dedicated Small Expandable Knack product review .

  • The small-size Knack Bag has a thoughtful size for commutes and day trips.
  • Travel-friendly: Designed to fit both in overhead airplane compartments and under airplane seats.
  • Design is a bit boxy and not overly feminine nor slimming.
  • Would be a wide fit for petite women (like me) with narrow shoulders (for taller women, no problem).

Update: Series 2: Medium Expandable Knack Pack

I tried out the Series 2: Medium Expandable Knack Pack . Even with the medium size, it didn’t feel too big. The elongated shape of this bag makes it slightly slimming, even though it’s 24L when un-expanded, and 35L when expanded.

It fits two or three outfits when packing lightly for a short trip and it fits a 15” laptop. Like the Small Expandable Knack Pack, it has removable and packable straps, and a strong foam back panel for support during wear.

Expand your storage space without sacrificing style with the Small Expandable Knack Pack, a versatile solution for all your needs.

Aer Fit Pack 3

The Aer Fit Pack 3 daypack definitely packs in a bit more volume than the Away Daypack mentioned above. At 18L, I found I can fit way more. It’s why Aer markets this bag as a daypack that’ll fit your gym clothes, and split them up from your laptop. Dan reviewed it in-depth as a work-meets-gym/travel bag in this detailed review .

In my use of it, I found the useful features to be the unique center zipper, water bottle pockets and mesh back panel. My favorite features are the extremely high-quality zippers and seal-proof zipper closures, along with the very sturdy lift handle. This price reflects the high quality that I can feel when I wear it.

When I wear the Aer bag, I’ll choose it because of the large cavity, which is the exterior vertical zip-up compartment that’s ideal for gym clothes. The shoe compartment is accessible from the bottom of the backpack.

  • It has a pass-through strap to be used with the handle of your luggage (great for the airport).
  • It weighs only 2.5 lbs. before putting anything in it.
  • The laptop compartment is secure and padded and feels really durable.
  • Smaller-framed women may find it a bit big for taking around during the day.
  • The straps are also kind of thick, but this won’t be an issue if you have wide shoulders.
  • The vertical-zip compartment is not for every taste because it’s unique and non-standard.

Travel lighter and smarter with the Aer Fit Pack 3, designed to secure your essentials without adding unnecessary bulk.

Tortuga Laptop Backpack

I got the Tortuga Laptop Backpack to use as a “personal item” on a flight. It’s a high-quality bag made from durable materials. My favorite travel features of this backpack are the laptop compartment (two ways to access it), the tech pouch and the dual water bottle pockets.

This laptop backpack only comes in black, in its no-nonsense style, with ample pockets and a light starting weight. Note: It’s a unisex backpack designed for both men and women and anyone else who’s bringing around a laptop and trip essentials.

For the laptop compartment: it’s padded, and there’s tablet sleeve, too. When I use this backpack, I can fit both a MacBook Pro and my Macbook Air . To see all the photos of the features and all about the inside of this bag, check out the Tortuga Laptop Backpack review that I wrote!

For travel-specific features, there’s a luggage pass-through, zipper mesh pocket and dual water bottle pockets. Overall, this laptop backpack is a very good choice for travel, and it’s precisely the size of a “personal item” for fitting under an airplane seat.

Travel like an expert with the laptop backpack meant for travel.

Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack

The Troubadour Bivy Tote Backpack is a two-in-one daypack and tote bag that looks great on women. This smart travel backpack is two bags in one: it’s both a backpack and a zip tote. My first impression was: “I can’t believe how lightweight it is.”

Troubadour’s products are top-notch quality, with the finest details taken into account. The zippers slide beautifully, and the designs are stylish and minimalist. The pockets are thoughtful. It’s why I included the Bivy Tote Backpack in my gift guide for travelers .

The Bivy Tote Backpack can also fit up to 21L in volume. The first time I tried it out by bringing it out for a packed day in NYC , I packed it with my laptop, my bike helmet, a change of clothes in case I got sweaty, snacks AND accessories.

I love the stellar design that’s easy on the eyes, and the versatile tote straps for when my back needs a break. You can see more photos of me with it at my full review of the Bivy Tote Backpack .

  • Because it’s both a backpack and a tote, it has comfy handles and padded shoulder straps.
  • It’s stylish, and timeless. It’s lightweight. It’s impressive. I give this backpack 5 stars.
  • When being worn as a backpack, the tote strap can feel or look funny in some opinions.
  • When carrying the Bivy as a tote, the straps are a little on the short side for supporting the weight.

The 14-liter Roll-Top Mini from Stubble & Co. is my first “roll-top” backpack. I’ve always seen people biking in NYC with roll-top backpacks, and never quite went as far as to buy one. I like the lightweight feel of it — it’s only 1.76 lbs when empty (great for a petite person like me).

I get into all the details and features at my Stubble & Co. Roll-Top Backpack review .

ladies travel rucksack uk

Stubble & Co. is a British company with a mission of inspiring people to get out and “do more.” Their bag designs blend urban and outdoor themes, and as a certified B-Corp, they aim to do the “right thing” for the environment.

The bags are durable and built to last, meaning one Stubble & Co. product should last for years. When I received my Mini, I noticed that the packaging was fully recyclable and compostable.

ladies travel rucksack uk

I chose the Roll-Top Mini to fit my small 5’2” narrow frame. I used it immediately to tote around my laptop and work essentials for an afternoon. I slid my MacBook Air into the padded laptop compartment, zipped it up via the backside and put my phone and AirPods into the front zipper pocket.

ladies travel rucksack uk

What I like about the Roll-Top Mini as a women’s travel daypack is that it’ll keep my stuff dry if I get caught in some rain or snow (consider a trip in Ireland !). All the seams and zippers are waterproof. The roll top closes with a “G clip” to fasten it, for a cool travel bag look. (My tip: this backpack comes in a lot of colors, but don’t delay: the popular ones often sell out.)

  • Versatile for urban and outdoorsy travel; good for biking, with the bike light anchor point.
  • Focus on weatherproofed materials, zips and seams, and the roll top keeps everything inside dry.
  • The water bottle pockets only fit a regular slim bottle (as pictured), not my 24oz travel water bottle.
  • Laptop is not accessible from main compartment — only from dedicated back panel laptop compartment.

Thank you to Stubble & Co. for generously sending me the Roll-Top Mini. All thoughts here are my own based on my use of the product.

Stubble & Co. Roll-Top Mini

Waterproof zippers and the roll-top closure with a clip make this an excellent all-weather travel backpack.

Fjallraven Kanken Mini

I think the Swedish Fjallraven mini Kanken backpack is a classic mini backpack that you’ll see among travelers of all ages and sizes. You’ll get style over functionality with this little backpack. Don’t expect too many compartments, but you will get a fairly lightweight bag that does have its advantages.

ladies travel rucksack uk

Part of this female-friendly daypack being lightweight means that you can pack it in your bigger luggage to use for later during your trip.

  • Its mini size is adorable. It’s only 7 liters of volume inside!
  • It comes in more colors than I can count. You could have one for every month.
  • This tiny daypack won’t fit the needs of every traveler looking for more storage and flexibility.
  • It very loudly says “Fjällräven” on the front, so it’s for someone who likes “wearing” a brand.

Embrace the outdoors in style with the durable and classic Fjallraven, a reliable companion for every adventure.

Standard travel bags

I consider a standard travel bag or travel backpack to be between 30L and 45L in volume. These are the travel backpacks I take on a flight with no problem. Travel bags of this size are big enough to carry my things for a one or two-week trip.

Nomatic 30L Travel Bag

The Nomatic 30L is definitely a standard-size travel bag, coming in at 30L. It’s a good volume for taking a gals trip away for a weekend. I have Nomatic’s packing cubes and have been using them all year.

ladies travel rucksack uk

This bag looks modern and contemporary, and it’s for a woman who has lots of technical specifications in mind for the perfect travel backpack.

The Nomatic brand is big on innovation, so with this bag, you’ll see a duffel-to-carry convertible option, a water-resistant flap and a TSA-ready laptop sleeve for the experienced woman traveler.

  • Lots of features: durable zippers, waist straps, snaps, handles and materials.
  • Backed by the Nomatic Lifetime Warranty.
  • It weighs 3.3 lbs, which may be a lot for some, and with its boxy build, looks a lot like a rectangular duffel.
  • It’s not overly feminine, so you can regard this as a unisex backpack that a man in your life can borrow as well (also a pro).

Make the most of your travel experience with the Nomatic 30L Travel Bag, designed for flexible loading and easy access.

Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 30L

Topo is a women’s and men’s brand that creates unisex products for people of all genders. Their products have fun colors and huge playful zippers, with no shortage of pockets.

I’ve tried out the Topo Global Travel Bag in 30L for weekend trips and road trips. I like this bag because it fits a lot inside when I use packing cubes , and its size is unique. The shape is useful for shoes, clothes and a few travel accessories . It has “three-way” backpack straps-duffel handle-shoulder strap functionality.

  • Carry-on compliant, external laptop sleeve for airport use, works well with other products in the “Topo ecosystem.”
  • Designed for one-bag travel (i.e. long weekends, short trips or day-long getaways).
  • No female-specific build features (but you can share it with a guy in your life!)
  • The straps are functional — just not beautiful or stylish.

Bellroy Transit Backpack Plus

My first impression of the Bellroy backpack was that the quality is very sturdy. I can tell just by feeling the exterior that it’s made of a water-resistant fabric, which is a crucial feature for my preferences, in a travel bag. As it turns out, the body is made from recycled materials, which I like for a sustainability factor.

I really like the 38L size of this transit backpack , which is cool as a large commuter bag, nice-sized weekender backpack or larger-end daypack. It’s also quite structured, rather than thin and slouchy, which I like in a bag because it holds its shape.

I took this bag on a train trip for its maiden voyage, and it supports weight well, has a handy set of pockets (even hidden ones on the sides), a generous laptop compartment and inner mesh pockets for small items.

ladies travel rucksack uk

It’s more lightweight than other bags of its size, which I like a lot. The weight makes a big difference when you are carrying the bag for a long time. It’s spacious inside and the straps are firm.

ladies travel rucksack uk

At first glance, this is a very good-looking backpack, and the green color is delightful (it also comes in black). It’s modern, minimalist and simple, with a soft-lined sunglasses pocket and features like a 16” laptop sleeve compartment for easy access during airport security. Lastly, it’s carry-on approved.

ladies travel rucksack uk

  • Built for the traveler in mind, with passport pockets, the airport-friendly laptop pocket and carry-on dimension size.
  • Strong construction and quality materials that make it worth it.
  • It also comes in 20 and 28L, for if you love the style and 38L is too big for your needs.
  • The price falls at the higher end, but consider that Bellroy’s products have a 3-year warranty.
  • In my use, the zippers are a bit stiff, and feel like they’re tough to break in. The zippers move kind of slowly and require some effort.

Travel in comfort and style with the spacious Bellroy Transit Backpack Plus, designed to keep your essentials neatly organized.

Tortuga Travel Backpack

Tortuga Backpacks are one of the leading brands of travel backpacks for everyone, so of course we’re including their Travel Backpack in 40L (international maximum carry-on size) and 30L (mid-sized carry on) as a choice for women travelers.

ladies travel rucksack uk

This square-sized minimalist backpack is down-to-earth and cool. At 4.5 lbs, the 40L product is slightly on the heavy side, for not being a 60 or 70L bag with all the trimmings. But, it does fit your laptop and tablet with fleece-line sleeves and has weather-resistant, durable and lockable YKK zippers that won’t break during transit. Reliable zippers are everything. We’ve seen other travelers with bags that won’t shut and we never want to experience that!

The Tortuga Travel Backpack aims to be something in between a suitcase and a hiking backpack, meaning it’s urban-friendly and meant to let you breeze through the airport with one-bag travel.

  • Timeless design and unisex nature lets you share it with a partner, roommate, sibling, etc.
  • Front-loading build and durable materials with a weight management suspension system.
  • Home try-on program
  • $350 for the 40L and $325 for the 30L may make some brands look like better value, but it includes the Tortuga lifetime guarantee.

Embark on your journey with the Tortuga Travel Backpack, designed for the modern nomad.

Tom Bihn Techonaut 45

I have used this Tom Bihn backpack for a weekend trip several times. With the size, it fits my packing cubes full of a few sets of clothes, and my laptop. Tom Bihn is a brand that uses superior materials that should last for decades. I see this in the quality of the Tom Bihn Synapse , which Dan and I have used for a few years, too.

The Tom Bihn Techonaut opens clamshell-style, and it’s one of the few backpacks this size that have this style. Because of the wider square shape, it’s not great for petite women, but fine for women who are taller. We critique the Tom Bihn Techonaut in this review .

  • Incredible materials and strong zippers. Useful side-grab handle for carrying as a duffel as well.
  • Awesome choice for using as a weekender backpack, with dedicated laptop compartment.
  • The relatively high price (it reflects the high-quality nylon ripstop build, and water-repellant zippers!)
  • Likely too wide for petite women.
  • Not comfortable to wear for an extended period of time like in walking around a city on a layover because it doubles as a duffel.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

Through my experience with the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L , my favorite aspect is the high-quality zippers that won’t break, snap or split. While other backpacks may report torn pockets or bad zippers in the reviews, I find the PD backpack to perform flawlessly. You’ll find this backpack in our list of the best backpacks for travel photography .

As a woman traveler using this backpack, I adjust the straps a lot. This backpack has great “expandability,” because it’s — well, expandable. The entire front of the bag unzips, which reveals another few liters of space that you can utilize. The exterior is 100% waterproof.

It’s international carry-on size approved, so no airline can turn it away from an overhead compartment when I fly.

I also have the 30L version , and it shares a lot of the same quality and features. If you don’t quite need 45L, the 30L is a perfect alternative. Dan also uses this bag extensively and write a review of it. Check out the review !

  • The nylon shell and waterproof liner that instill confidence during unexpected downpours.
  • Padded shoulder straps and waist straps, along with an attractive and modern minimalist design in Black or Sage.
  • High price for a 45L, but worth it, if you’re into quality materials and a bag for life.
  • No woman-specific features for sizing.
  • Limited number of pockets, but still a good amount.

“Backpacker” Large-Volume Travel Backpacks

With a big backpacker backpack, you are likely a serious traveler. Higher-volume backpacks help me carry a heavy load when I’m on a longer trip. The backpacks I’ve recommended below are fit custom for women’s bodies and often have adjustable straps, to support more weight ergonomically.

Here’s my tip: Keep in mind that bags of this size will likely need to be checked as checked luggage. If you’re seeking a savvy way to track the location of your checked luggage, like if you have a layover and there’s a risk of your bag being sent the wrong way, consider Apple AirTags like I’m using these days, to track my bags’ locations.

Deuter Aircontact Core 45 + 10 SL Pack

I’ve had a lot of luck with my smaller backpack from Deuter, and it’s a trusty brand that travelers hold in high regard. This high-volume backpacking backpack is for the woman who wants to take everything and have it all fit in a 45+10L backpack. My sibling Emma recently took it on a trip and was impressed with everything she could fit in it. I list it as one of the best products for backpackers this year.

The backpack was modeled by Deuter to have a female-specific fit, setting it apart from a men’s bag of the same size and build. The “SL” in the name means “Slim Line.” For features, I like the ergonomic lock hip fit, with compression straps, an air mesh back panel and a narrow shoulder harness.

The +10L is an optional compartment at the top that you can stash gear in, without having to open the rest of the backpack. This is a perfect opportunity for me to put in a travel blanket, or a sleeping bag. I can detach this compartment and leverage additional space using Deuter’s design.

You can see how I look with the Aircontact Core backpack in these photos. Keep in mind that I am 5’2” and petite. This backpack works great for its narrowness and weight distribution. I wish I’d had it for all my trips in past years!

For buying options, you can check out this backpack on REI.com and Amazon .

  • Well-priced for its size, volume, features and quality.
  • Attractive feature for keeping shape: the more you pack it, the taller (not wider), it gets.
  • Weighs 4 lbs 4.4 oz when empty because of the metal frame.
  • It only comes in one women’s size, OS (one size).

ladies travel rucksack uk

Carry your gear in comfort with the Deuter Aircontact Core 60 + 10 SL Pack, designed for extended trips.

REI Co-op Flash 55 Pack

I’m impressed that this flash 55L pack by REI doesn’t truly look like it’s a 55L backpack. It looks more modest and compact, but it packs a punch (well, literally it packs 55L of your stuff).

ladies travel rucksack uk

True to REI being awesome, it comes in dedicated women’s sizes of XS, S and M. It focuses on stability and suspension, for female hikers and anyone who plans to be really walking around with this 55L backpack strapped to your back (long walks through airports maybe?).

For loads of 15-30 pounds, the support and suspension keeps even this kind of weight comfortable through compression straps and a contoured hip belt.

  • Great support through weight management features, and roll-top closure for compression.
  • The design is hydration-compatible, good for hiking or hot weather trips.
  • Comes in three dedicated female-specific sizes.
  • The mesh and materials can be kind of delicate, and are prone to ripping if you get rugged during a hike.
  • Can’t think of anything else!

Make hiking a breeze with the REI Co-op Flash 55 Pack, offering ample storage without the weight.

Osprey Ariel Plus 70 Pack

If you’ve ever been in a hostel where you eye everyone’s backpacks and have backpack envy, you’ve probably seen a guy or gal with an Osprey. What’s the hype all about?

With the Osprey Ariel Plus 70 Pack , which is a maximum-size backpacking backpack, you better be getting everything under the sun for its cost of $410. I like this backpack though, because it has a detachable bag that you can use for a daypack for hikes or walking around the city.

ladies travel rucksack uk

This is a fantastic value-add because the detachable tiny daypack. It’s very small; however, you can bet that the removable daypack will be handy to take on a hike or out for a day of sightseeing. It’s like a built-in convenience that I have found highly useful during travel.

  • It’s one of the highest-volume backpacks for women on the market.
  • The removable top lid and detachable daypack is super handy.
  • Osprey seems to be skipping over woman-specific build features.
  • The price is one of the highest out there for a 70L, but the value is good.

Explore the wilderness with the Osprey Ariel Plus 70 Pack, offering extensive storage and comfort.

Gregory Maven 55 Pack

This durable and comfortable form-fitting 55L larger backpack for women has a heap of features like a woman-specific shoulder harness and comes in two sets of sizes, XS-S and S-M. This is really useful if you’re a petite woman looking for a backpack that’ll agree with narrow shoulders or a unique build.

The Gregory Maven 55 Pack allows for easy gear loading and focuses on adjustability and performance technics for whatever the weather brings, from rain (a rain cover in a zipper pocket) to hot sun (with a sunglasses stow system feature).

ladies travel rucksack uk

Overall, the price is steeper, but this is certainly a backpack for life, and with the REI warranty, you can return or replace your item for a refund within 365 of buying it.

  • Woman-specific build for female bodies
  • Incredible set of features for travel conveniences and security
  • At around $260, this backpack may be steep for some.
  • The REI warranty is “only” one year, and not a lifetime warranty.

Embark on epic adventures with the Gregory Maven 55 Pack, built to carry your world.

Bonus backpack: Decathlon Quechua 50L Forclaz for Women

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include this trusty and budget (okay, cheap) hiking and backpacking travel pack for women. I had the 2010 version, and then the 2011 version, and then Dan got the 2018 version for men.

I’ve had a ton of experience using the Quechua Forclaz 50L as my main backpacking travel bag, and it has stood the test of time. It also comes in this 60L version around the same price point.

ladies travel rucksack uk

  • Affordable price
  • Lightweight materials
  • Great back support, plenty of compartments
  • Zippers aren’t top quality
  • Elastic bungee bands tend to wear out over time
  • None others. I’ve taken my Quechua Forclaz to more than 30 countries.

Decathlon Quechua 50L Forclaz

Travel light without leaving anything behind with the Decathlon Quechua 50L Forclaz, the ultimate backpack for every traveller.

Honorable Mentions

These backpacks are a mix of bags that may not fit the categories we listed above, or, they’re discontinued but there’s a close second in stock. Check ‘em out in case you haven’t found what you were looking for yet.

Filson Rugged Twill Rucksack

As a note, the Filson Rugged Twill Rucksack is now only available in the larger size, which is called (very appropriately) the “Large Rugged Twill Rucksack on Filson’s website. It retails at $595. This is a very special backpack from a very special brand!

I started using my Filson Twill Rucksack as a commuter bag because it was finally (for me) a bag that had straps that didn’t sit too widely on my shoulders. I’m narrow-shouldered, and I’ve had issues in the past with backpacks that sat so wide on my shoulders that I looked like I was borrowing a backpack from someone bigger and taller.

If you have the budget and want to have a bag for the rest of your life (seriously), choose a Filson . It has a classic look, and because it’s small-to-medium sized, it’s great for women (like me) who want to have a daypack that’s not overbearing and chunky.

The twill rucksack is an all-purpose daypack, made with 100% genuine leather, hence the price point. What I like about it so far is that the straps are slim, which is great for women, as many bags have thick unisex straps. I also like that its components are so thick and sturdy that you virtually can’t damage it. You could throw this backpack and beat it up, and it would probably still look the same.

ladies travel rucksack uk

Why do people love Filson bags ? Well, they’re suppose to last a lifetime, so no fast fashion here! I have the Twill Rucksack in the mustard color (now discontinued), and it pairs nicely with most outfits at any time of year. You could sling it over your shoulders in summer or spring, and in fall and winter it’ll brighten any outfit with dark colors. The large rucksack comes only in Otter Green right now. It’s also timeless.

One thing to note about this rucksack is that it has one main cavity, and two external pockets. That’s it. This is not specifically a laptop bag; rather, it’s a do-it-all backpack meant for various uses. It does not have a dedicated laptop compartment, nor laptop sleeve. When I use this bag to go to work, I put my laptop in a neoprene case , and use it as the backbone of the backpack, if that makes sense.

With only these three cavities and pockets, you’ll need a way to keep your smaller items (day-to-day things like tampons, lip balm, sunscreen, keys, literally anything small) from flying around. I use a tech pouch for holding smaller stuff like tech accessories. If you have something like a small-sized packing cube , that could do the trick.

ladies travel rucksack uk

  • Fans of Filson use their bags for decades, and you can guarantee the Twill Rucksack will always be in style.
  • I like the thin straps that don’t look overbearing on my shoulders as a woman.
  • I feel like I could not break this bag, no matter how hard I tried. It’s like it’s made of steel.
  • The price is high, reflecting the high quality, materials and craftsmanship.
  • Friends have noted to us that if you sweat and you’re wearing light colors, the straps can bleed on your clothes. I haven’t experienced this (yet). Keep it in mind.
  • The main cavity does not have any smaller pockets, and there are no internal zippers and no dedicated laptop compartment.

Shop Filson Backpacks

Why trust me?

I’ve traveled around the world with only a backpack (or two). For me, I like backpacks because they make traveling more flexible. When I take a rolling suitcase, it’s easier to transport on flat surfaces at the airport, but when I’m walking through cobblestone streets in European cities, I prefer having a backpack!

I’m also petite (and short!), so having a backpack meant for a wider, taller and broader man just won’t cut it. I’ve had trouble with this over the years, and I’ve been delighted recently that there are so many backpacks on the market for women just like me.

I’ve lived abroad (three times!), traveled to more than 40ish (or 50ish? I stopped counting) countries – many of them twice or three times. On all my travels and trips, my awesome backpacks played a huge part.

I hope you have found what you’re looking for in my list of backpacks and I’m sure you can tell that I prioritize quality, comfort, sturdiness and style. If you have a backpack that you love that I could add to this list, let me know at our contact form .
