The best hotel deals to book right now if you still want to get away for the holidays

• The period between Christmas and New Year's tends to be one of the most expensive times to travel, with high demand resulting in increased prices for airfare, hotels, and vacations.
• But if you're still looking for a last-minute getaway by the year's end, many hotels are offering deals and packages at competitive rates. Brands such as Marriott Bonvoy , Hilton , IHG , Preferred Hotels , and others are discounting prices and offering perks to sweeten the deal.
• Availability and pricing varies by day, with the best prices over the Christmas holiday. Many promotions must be booked by December 17, while others extend into the New Year.

The period between Christmas and New Year's tends to be one of the most expensive times to travel. Many people take time off of work or need to hit the road in some capacity. Such high demand typically translates to overall increased prices for airfare, hotels, and vacations.

But if you've found yourself with extra use-it-or-lose-it PTO, are itching to tack a trip onto existing holiday travel, or just need to feel the warmth of the sun, there are still deals to be found. No surprise, the majority are in Florida, but I found other deals around the country and abroad, too.

Some of our favorite hotel brands are offering enticing rates and packages, no gift wrap needed. Better yet, showing loyalty offers a double bonus in point-earning potential, which is a great way to get closer to 2020 award travel.

Below are a few highlights rounded up by brand, which were available at the time of publishing. But get clicking, many of these offers expire by early next week, and are subject to change. If you do miss out, check back here. We'll continue to update this post as we find great deals leading up to Christmas.

Preferred hotels, love home swap, keep reading for the best travel deals for christmas.

Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club, a member of Marriott's Autograph Collection, seeks to draw families to the beach this year with their Family Night In package. The booking dates are ongoing and cheaper after the holidays, but if you book over Christmas you'll find rates around $400 for oceanfront views and bond-encouraging perks such as an in-room movie, two 12" wood-fired pizzas with up to two toppings, two non-alcoholic beverages, one bottle of house red, white or rosé, and of course, one family-size portion of gourmet popcorn.

Spend family night in Miami at the Cadillac Hotel starting at $400 over Christmas

The Westin Tampa Bay has shockingly low rates over Christmas week, as low as $140 per night for the four-star hotel, no package needed. You'll have to be a Marriott Bonvoy member to score the best prices though. The waterfront locale has lovely bay views and is just three miles from Tampa International Airport and close to other pretty areas such as Clearwater Beach and St. Petersburg.

IHG is the parent company of brands such as Kimpton, Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and others, and has extended their Cyber Monday sale through December 17.

Stays are valid until May 31, 2020, and participating hotels offer 20% off the Best Flexible Rate, with an additional 5% discount for IHG Rewards Club members. Opting in to the latter is smart, considering it also provides benefits such as extra point-earning potential and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Kimpton, in particular, has loads of standout deals, starting with their Winter Sun offering.

Sun seekers can head south to Florida and receive up to 20% off hotels' best flexible rates in Downtown Miami, South Beach or Vero Beach. You must book by December 19, and do so at least 10 days in advance of travel, which can take place between December 19 to March 31, 2020. Different properties have different availability, but I found the Winter Sun package to be available over Christmas at the Kimpton Angler's Hotel South Beach for a suite with a terrace for $225 per night.

Kimpton's family-friendly package for Hotel Palomar in Washington, DC might make taking kids on the road more attractive.

With a central location in Dupont Circle, and rates as low as $96 per night, the promotion includes a 50% discount on daily parking, complimentary breakfast for kids 12 and under, and signature Kimpton perks like happy hour, free morning coffee, complimentary bikes, yoga mats, and other wellness perks. 

Book Kimpton's Family Package at Hotel Palomar for travel through December 31

Spend Christmas wrapped in a cozy blanket by the fire as the snow falls while enjoying the rustic charm of a boutique hotel. Kimpton's Taconic Hotel in in picturesque Vermont is offering 15% off their best rates through the end of the year when you stay three nights or more. I found nightly rates as low as $260 for Christmas Eve.

If family time stresses you out, Kimpton's "Outlaw the In-laws" package places you oceanfront in Huntington Beach, California at the Kimpton Shorebreak. Rates are as low as $166 for Christmas and New Year's week for entry-level rooms and only rose to a reasonable $265 for New Year's Eve. Better yet, the package includes a welcome bottle of wine and is available through January 12, 2020 if you're not in a hurry to get back to the office.

California residents looking for a staycation or in-state getaway can take advantage of Kimpton's 25% discount at the Everly Hotel in Hollywood. I found rates as low as $264 for the weekend after Christmas, so long as you stay and book by December 31.

Hop the pond to London and enjoy a suite stay at the Kimpton Fitzroy. The aptly named "Suite Dreams in London" promotion offers complimentary breakfast for two, a bottle of Champagne on arrival, £60 food and beverage credit to use in any of their four restaurants and bars, and two garments pressed on check-in.

The package price starts at about $400, though if you're willing to feel a tad less luxurious, regular rooms are being offered as low as $150 per night for one bed over Christmas. The offer is actually available for most of 2020, but must be booked by Jan 31, 2020.

DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront is offering a New Year's Eve package to ring in the New Year, including a southern buffet breakfast and late check-out for those who stay up past midnight. The offer is available for stays Dec. 26 through Jan. 3 using the rate code "0NE." Book New Year's Eve and pay just $129.

Another DoubleTree, the Gates Hotel is a Miami boutique property offering a few different ways to save over the holidays. Hilton Honors members who book direct can secure a King bed with a pool view for $194. Opt for the Holidays Extra package and you'll get the same room for $239, but also receive premium Wi-Fi, daily breakfast, and late checkout.

The folks at Preferred Hotels know that some of the best travel is spontaneous and are offering savings of 35% off last-minute bookings at luxury hotels around the world.

The deals are available for travel by January 19, 2020, but must be booked no later than December 16, 2019. The full list of properties participating are here and include the US, Europe, and Asia. Some standouts include the five-star K Club in Ireland for around $300 per night, the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida starting at $149 per night, the Royal Park Hotel Tokyo for $138, the Hotel California Paris Champs Elysees starting at $200, and the all-suite Hyde Resort in Hollywood, Florida beginning at $200 per night.

The week between Christmas and New Year's is an ideal time to steal away. You've celebrated Christmas, the holiday season is winding down, and many businesses and schools remain closed, making it easier to plot an escape, and it's a time of festivals and other special events that roll out the welcome mat for visitors. Whether you're in search of sun and sand or traditional holiday-themed winter fun, keep these destinations in mind for a final getaway for the year. 

1. Acapulco

Among the best places to visit after Christmas, Acapulco is an affordable beach paradise known for its turquoise water and unforgettable, world-class cuisine. Top attractions include XTASEA, a zip line over the Bay of Puerto Marques that reaches 75 miles an hour, and La Roqueta Island off Acapulco's coast for snorkeling and diving. Looking for something family-friendly? The Rollo Aquatic park has wave pools, waterslides, and lazy rivers for kids of all ages.

2. Thailand

A top budget-friendly winter destination choice of Travelzoo's Gabe Saglie. Visitors flock to beautiful beaches and enjoy diverse food offerings. Flowers bloom right through our winter, particularly in northern Thailand. The mountain and hill region of Khun Chang Khien, Doi Inthanon, and Doi Angkhang in Chiang Mai come alive with the vibrant pink of Wild Himalayan cherry blossoms .

3. New Orleans

If there's one thing New Orleans does well , it's celebrations. Holiday festivities continue after Dec. 25, including Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, which includes hundreds of thousands of colorful and illuminated Christmas decorations. Temps can dip down into the 40s at night, so pack warm clothes and, if you get chilly, grab a cup of hot cocoa at The Creole Creamery or a cup of white hot chocolate at Envie Espresso Bar & Cafe. 

4. Bansko, Bulgaria

This European Union country might not the first to come to mind when considering a place to travel in December, but you shouldn't count it out. According to one blogger , this ski town offers the best of both worlds: "a mix of a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic old town and buzzing nightlife near the gondola." It's also located in Pirin National Park, which offers more than 150 square miles of outdoor adventure and scenery. The BBC just named it  an "unlikely new digital nomad hub," do don't surprised if you're tempted to stay. 

It might not immediately come to mind as one of the best after-Christmas vacation spots in December, but keep Ireland in mind  for a post-holiday escape, Saglie says. Prices tumble throughout Europe in November and flights from the U.S. to Ireland are numerous, which helps keep prices down. Ireland offers a range of accommodation options, from luxe five-star castles to more than 1,000 bed and breakfasts, some well under $100 a night.

6. The Gambia, West Africa

If you're looking for something a little more off the beaten path for a late December/early January vacation, consider this African country south of Dakar and Senegal. It's known for it's hospitable culture, outdoor adventure, and mostly English-speaking population. This is also its dry season, so expect abundant sunshine and temps in the 80s. Must-visit attractions here include the River Gambia National Park, Kotu Beach, and The Reptile Farm. Several local tour companies offer well-rated day excursions. 

Another of the best places to travel between Christmas and New Year's, the Land of Fire and Ice is pure magic in late December and early January. Visitors here  can spend days on snowmobile tours and adventurous glacier trekking expeditions, or dash across picturesque landscapes on husky rides, says Cammie Burke, Europe expert for travel company Scott Dunn. Once the sun sets, cozy up with a bowl of lobster bisque by a hotel fire and watch the Northern Lights  dance across the sky. Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik, is a great place for foodies, and — with its Wake Up Reykajvík New Year's Eve party — not a bad place to ring in the new year.

Miami's December beach weather is hard to beat (hovering between the 70s and low 80s) and nonstop flights with low prices make it one of the best last-minute, end-of-year vacations. Iconic South Beach is home to some of the city's best restaurants, nightlife, live music, and shopping . Don't miss the city's graffiti art zone, the Wynwood Walls.

9. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Those looking to escape winter can grab some sun and sand at this Pacific coast resort city. Stay in town and experience the charm of cobblestone streets, historic churches, and seaside sculptures. Or head out on day trips to locales like Sayulita, where you can take a surfing lesson or drink a pina colada on the beach. Or venture to tiny and remote Yelapa, which is accessible only by boat. 

10. Chicago

Yes, it is cold in Chicago in late December. Ignore it to glide through one of the city's many ice skating rinks, including those in Maggie Daley Park and McCormick Tribune Plaza. Eat your way through Restaurant Row on Randolph Street. There's also a rich art scene, with galleries and theaters offering refuge from the cold — and don't miss live music at the iconic Buddy Guy's Legends blues club.

11. Bimini, Bahamas

Just 50 nautical miles from South Florida — a mere 25-minute plane ride or two-hour ferry from Miami — Bimini is known for stunning beaches, friendly locals, and charming resorts. Ernest Hemingway was fond of deep-sea fishing here; Martin Luther King Jr. was a regular visitor. Learn Bimini's unique story at cultural and historical sites such as Heroes Park, or take guided eco-tours through lush mangroves to observe wildlife.

12. Barcelona, Spain

If Europe is calling your name but you want a destination that's a little warmer, consider this Italian seaside city, where temperatures hover around 50-60. If you arrive a few days before Dec. 25, you can still find the Christmas spirit alive in the city's many Christmas markets. Be sure to stop in at the Devil's Kitchen, a German bar and grill that serves homemade mulled wine. 

13. Oaxaca City, Mexico

Designated a World Heritage Site, Oaxaca offers a glimpse of various chapters of Mexican history — pre-Hispanic, colonial, independent, modern, and contemporary phases — in its architecture, museums, festivals, and colorful crafts , as well as its pre-Columbian ruins.

14. Puerto Rico

Whether you’re a nature lover or a foodie or someone just looking for a break from the cold, this U.S. territory will not let you down. With winter temperatures in the 80s, adventuresome travelers can swim at night with bioluminescent plankton in certain coastal bays and see the tiny creatures light up when stimulated by movement. Or they can explore the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System: El Yunque in Puerto Rico. Foodies will have plenty to explore as well with the island’s craft beer and gastropub scenes .

15. Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Bucks County, about 30 minutes from Philadelphia, gives a more traditional holiday backdrop. The New Hope Railroad allows passengers to relive the golden age of rail travel. At Peddler's Village, visitors can explore a winter wonderland that includes a whimsical gingerbread display through early January, as well as 65 shops and boutiques, a 1920s carousel, and an arcade.

16. Alexandria, Virginia

If you haven't quite tired of the holiday spirit, Alexandria charms with brick-lined streets and twinkling holiday lights — King Street is like a real-life Dickens village. Just minutes from Washington, D.C. , by subway, Alexandria is also a foodie's heaven. If you're still there for New Year's Eve, don't miss First Night Alexandria, a festival that includes music, fireworks, and more. 

17. Hamilton, Ohio

A small community along the Great Miami River that's oozing historical charm , Hamilton dates back to 1791. Revitalized, with its downtown transformed into a hot spot for arts, dining, and recreation, the city includes a nine-block German Village Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

18. North Lake Tahoe, California

Home to the continent's largest alpine lake and among the nation's largest concentration of ski resorts. Take sleigh and carriage rides through the snow on Sand Harbor beach, go dog sledding at the Resort at Squaw Creek, and don't miss the Palisades Tahoe Aerial Tram ride, which climbs more than 2,000 feet for 360-degree views of Lake Tahoe and the High Sierra.

19. Wind River Country, Wyoming

Escape the crowds and steep price tags of Jackson, and go beyond popular tourist stops such as Yellowstone. This authentic west destination offers include fat biking, skiing, and dog sledding, as well as wildlife observation.

20. Indianapolis

One of Travel + Leisure's recent "America's Favorite Cities for Affordable Getaways," and host to a number of holiday events  through December, among them Winterlights at Newfields on the Indianapolis Museum of Art campus, which includes 1.5 million twinkling lights and s'mores, and Christmas at the Zoo, a season of extended hours for even more light displays.

21. Navarre Beach, Florida

Often referred to as "Florida's Most Relaxing Place." Spend days looking for souvenir seashells on a quiet corner of white sand Gulf beach, take a short drive inland to explore sprawling Blackwater River State Forest, or stop by historic Milton, listed on the National Register of Historic places, for antiquing.

22. Monterey, California

A quintessential beach California town with some of the state's most iconic locations, including Bixby Creek Bridge, come winter Monterey hosts Ice Skating by the Bay but is also a place to witness migrating Monarch butterflies.

23. Ogden, Utah

Just 35 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport and home to three ski resorts : Snowbasin Resort, Power Mountain, and Nordic Valley. Each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, downtown Pensacola is illuminated as part of the First Lights Ceremony, kicking off a season of music, shopping, food, art, and nightlife under a glowing canopy illuminating historic buildings. Take in the scene along Palafox Street by foot, by horse and carriage, or by trolley.

From New England ski towns to charming European manors, these festive getaways are perfect for enjoying the holidays away from home this year.

Asheville, North Carolina

The Biltmore Estate comes alive at Christmastime with thousands of twinkling lights, trees and decorations throughout the stately home. There's also an evening candlelight experience with a crackling fire, wine tastings and live music. Stay at the Omni Grove Park Inn to take full advantage of their iconic spa and admire their yearly holiday gingerbread displays.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a special place to visit any time of year, but it's even more magical at Christmastime. The Holy City takes the holiday season seriously, with its annual Holiday Festival of Lights, the Sound of Charleston concert, Parade of Boats, and our personal favorite: holiday walking tours of swoon-worthy historic homes. Plus, it's one of America's great food destinations, so you can feel good about outsourcing holiday meals this year.

Cambridge Beaches, Bermuda

The 86 cottages at Cambridge Beaches in Bermuda were recently redesigned by Kellyann Hee (formerly of Soho House). They are all positioned along the coastline, offering privacy and unparalleled ocean views. This holiday season, Cambridge Beaches will be offering two festive packages: "Family Winter Wonderland" and "Romantic Winter Wonderland." Paris, France

Soufrière, St. Lucia

Budapest also boasts two Christmas markets where you can experience food vendors and craftspeople selling traditional Hungarian goods, take a twirl on the ice rink, and attend local holiday shows.

To properly take in all of the holiday festivities, stay at the Matild Palace which is conveniently located near city center. The hotel was built in 1902 during the Belle Epoque era and is an architectural dream. Stay in beautifully appointed rooms, indulge in luxurious on-site spa treatments, or check out a contemporary cabaret show. Holiday Airfares Are the Highest They’ve Been in Years—Here’s the Best Time to Book and How to Save

This year, my husband, our two young kids, and I will be celebrating Thanksgiving a little differently—on an airplane. When we initially looked into booking four economy round-trip flights over Thanksgiving week, to say we experienced sticker shock is an understatement. So, we played with the dates and opted for a less conventional flying time (i.e., the exact moment when countless Americans will be sitting at the dinner table) to score a better deal.

This tactic is among several hacks that can help you beat this year’s soaring holiday travel airfares.

“After two years of depressed holiday season travel due to waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans are gearing up for a season of Thanksgiving and Christmas travel once again,” reports travel booking site Hopper in its 2022 Holiday Travel Outlook . “Significant factors including jet fuel prices, fewer flights scheduled, and two years of pent-up holiday travel demand will combine this year to drive Thanksgiving and Christmas airfares to their highest in the last five years.”

The good news is that while holiday airfares are reaching a five-year peak, travel costs are at least coming down from summer 2022 highs. Flight prices have dipped 8.8 percent since last month, and hotel room rates are down about 2.3 percent since last month, according to Sally French, travel expert at financial advice site NerdWallet .

“Hotels and airfares hit record highs during the summer of 2022, but those prices have reached a top,” states French. But, she adds, “If you’re building your next vacation budget based on a 2019 trip, understand that you’ll likely pay far more now for pretty much every expense.”

Fortunately, there are ways you can save. Here are some expert tips on how to cut costs and when the ideal time is to book those holiday flights and travel.

The best time to book holiday 2022 travel

For both Thanksgiving and Christmas, Hopper recommends booking between now and October 20. “Prices will continue to fall until early September then remain relatively flat until mid-October,” Hopper reports. But the sooner the better. With each passing day, tickets tick upwards. Ideally, you should have your holiday travel booked by October 10.

How to get a good deal on holiday travel

Start planning now.

Get ahead of the last-minute rush—and price spikes—by locking in holiday travel plans ASAP. Booking patterns indicate that during the pandemic travelers became more prone to making last-minute decisions due to an uncertain travel climate. But now is the time to break that habit for those who want to save some money on flights, car rentals, and hotels.

Look into off-peak dates and times

You may not need to go as far as my family did and fly on Thanksgiving proper, but it helps if you can avoid the most popular travel times. “For Thanksgiving, flying the Monday of Thanksgiving week and returning any weekday of the following week will save you the most,” notes Hopper. (We also did the following week for our return and will be flying back the Wednesday after Thanksgiving to nab more affordable fares.) Flying out the Monday or Tuesday before Christmas weekend and returning midweek the following week could also help you save on flights.

Create price trackers and alerts

A helpful way to monitor airfares is to use the price tracking tools on sites like Google Flights, Hopper, or Kayak. Use these alerts to compare flights and then lock them in when they appear to be at their lowest or most reasonable. Airfares will continue to move up and down daily into early October, before steadily rising in the last two months before Christmas. “The next few weeks of volatile prices means travelers who are proactively monitoring prices could get notified of great, time sensitive deals,” Hopper notes.

Know a good deal when you see one

How do you know when to book? According to Hopper, as of mid-September, what would be considered good-deal domestic round-trip airfares for Thanksgiving are averaging $350 and for the Christmas period they are averaging $463. So, if you’re finding fares around those prices or lower, you likely aren’t going to find anything much better. For international round-trip airfares, Thanksgiving averages are $795 and Christmas averages are $1,300. (So maybe if you were thinking to go somewhere abroad, Thanksgiving is the better time to do so this year. )

Be open to alternate destinations (and airports)

If you’re flying to see friends or family, obviously there isn’t much wiggle room on the destination. But you can always look into nearby hubs that might offer more attractive airfares. Maybe see what’s on offer at Burbank or Long Beach versus LAX, LaGuardia versus JFK, or Oakland airport versus SFO.

And if you are planning to go on a vacation somewhere other than home for the holidays—maybe an escape to Mexico or the Caribbean or are dreaming of the holiday markets in Europe—but aren’t decided, perhaps let the airfares help dictate your final decision. A great deal could be just the motivation you need to finalize your plan and the place, including to somewhere you maybe hadn’t thought of before.

The most popular domestic destinations for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year include Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, Phoenix, San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Seattle. As for international destinations, the most popular destinations for the holidays this year include Cancun, Dublin, Madrid, Manila, and Mexico City. If you’re looking to avoid the crowds and higher fares, you may want to look for alternatives to these popular places.

Holiday travel prices are climbing high. Here’s how to save money.

After blazing-high prices and extraordinary levels of disruption failed to keep pandemic-weary travelers at home this summer, you should expect a similarly chaotic — and expensive — holiday travel season, industry analysts said.

The same factors that drove up prices this summer remain in play: inflation , gas prices , labor shortages and surging demand . The coronavirus , too, remains a persistent threat .

“Prices are up considerably across the board,” said Brett Keller, CEO of Priceline. Domestic round-trip airfare is 35 percent higher than last year, hotel prices are up by 11 percent, and rental car prices are roughly flat, but demand is high for all aspects of travel, he said.

Airports are slammed. Here are 6 ways to manage the chaos.

“If you haven’t booked your holiday flights, you really need to start pulling the trigger, because the longer you wait, they are going to max out in terms of seat capacity, and so you may not find a seat,” Keller said. “And two, the prices are just going to keep going up from here.”

Hayley Berg, lead economist at the travel-booking app Hopper , said the most important factor to saving money on holiday flights is to lock in a fare now, either by booking or using a tool such as Hopper’s “Price Freeze” to hold the price for a fee .

Thanksgiving prices are increasing 5 percent per week, and in early November, they will start increasing by $10 or $15 per day, Berg said. At the last minute, they will shoot up $50 per day.

“If you wait until next week to book, you could end up paying on average $30 or $40 [more] than if you book today,” Berg said.

Here’s how much different parts of your Thanksgiving and Christmas trips will cost, and how the experts recommend you save money this holiday season.

How to find cheap flights for Thanksgiving

Airlines are operating with about 96 percent of the capacity they had in 2019, but demand for flights around the holidays is expected to be higher than three years ago, Berg said.

“That demand is going to start to outstrip the amount of supply airlines have available,” Berg said. “That is going to drive up prices significantly the closer we get to both holidays.”

An average domestic round-trip flight during Thanksgiving week will cost $468, up 48 percent from 2021 and 30 percent from pre-pandemic, according to Kayak.

To save money and avoid crowds, begin your trip on Monday of Thanksgiving week. Average ticket prices departing Monday are 30 percent lower than the Saturday before and nearly 15 percent lower than Wednesday, the busiest travel days, according to Expedia.

For the return leg, consider going home on Thanksgiving Day for the cheapest fares. If that’s not possible, return on Friday or wait until the following Monday. Those two days will have fares up to 10 percent cheaper than Sunday, according to Expedia.

Busiest airports on Thanksgiving

According to Hopper’s Thanksgiving travel outlook , the top-booked domestic destinations for the holiday are Orlando, Chicago and Atlanta, and the top-booked international cities are San Juan, Puerto Rico; Cancún, Mexico; and Mexico City.

U.S. airlines have sold more than 25 million seats for Thanksgiving week alone, Hopper says, meaning you should expect airports to be crowded. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Dallas Fort-Worth International and Denver International are projected to be the busiest airports, especially in the mornings.

Airlines and airports have resolved some of the factors that led to widespread delays and cancellations this summer, but you should still prepare for some disruption. In particular, Hopper predicts that the worst airports for delays and cancellations will be Newark Liberty International Airport, Dallas Love Field and Miami International, based on disruption rates last Thanksgiving and this summer.

Hopper recommends taking the first flight out in the day to reduce your chance of delays, and arriving at the airport early in anticipation of crowds.

How to find cheap flights for Christmas

It will be similarly important to find the sweet spot to fly for Christmas, when a domestic round-trip flight will average $574, according to Kayak. That’s 52 percent higher than 2021 and 50 percent higher than 2019.

Expedia recommends departing on the Monday or Tuesday of the week before Christmas, which falls on a Sunday this year. The most expensive days to fly are Saturday, Dec. 17, and Thursday, Dec. 22, and Thursday will see the most crowds, according to Expedia flight data. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will have the cheapest fares.

When returning home from a Christmas trip, try to fly before Wednesday, when fares will start inching up again ahead of New Year’s, according to Berg.

How to find cheap holiday flights to Europe

If you’re looking for a hop across the pond this holiday season, expect to pay significantly more for your flight than the past two years. Airfare to Europe for Thanksgiving is averaging $586 round trip, 12 percent higher than 2021 and 4 percent higher than 2019, according to Hopper.

Christmas flight prices to Europe are up 30 percent from last year and 7 percent from 2019, with an average round trip coming in at $984. This year’s fares remain lower than 2018, however, when Christmas flights to Europe were averaging more than $1,000 thanks to high demand, according to Hopper.

If you want to save money on holiday flights to Europe, look at cities other than London , Paris, Milan and Rome , which Hopper says are seeing the highest search interest for the holidays this year.

How to find a cheap rental car

Car rentals for Thanksgiving are averaging $60 per day, with travelers reserving a car for an average of five days, according to Hopper. Christmas prices are slightly higher, at $65 per day, with the average rental lasting seven days.

Priceline estimates the average prices at slightly higher, at $84 per day. That figure would be 1 percent lower than 2021, when rental car shortages skyrocketed prices, but still 62 percent higher than 2019, according to Priceline.

Searches on Hotels.com for lodging with free parking are up 43 percent this year, an indicator that travelers are considering road trips, according to Expedia, which owns the hotel booking site. Expedia recommends booking your rental car now and taking advantage of options with free cancellation or the option to pay upon pickup.

To find a better rate, consider looking at off-airport rental car locations, which tend to offer better prices, according to Expedia. You should also look to pick up at locations where many people are dropping off their rentals, because a higher supply can mean deals for travelers.

How to find cheap hotels

Hotel prices for Thanksgiving are up 14 percent from 2021, with the average room coming in at $173 a night, according to Hopper. The booking app recommends locking in those prices for Thanksgiving by booking by the first week of November if you’re headed to a popular leisure destination.

Hopper recommends checking in to your hotel by Tuesday of Thanksgiving week if you’re looking to stay through the holiday, because prices will be lower than starting your stay on Wednesday. Avoid checking in on Black Friday, which can see prices higher than on the holiday itself.

In some major cities with large hotel inventories, however, you can save up to 25 percent by waiting to book until the last minute, as long as you are flexible on location and amenities, Berg said.

In big cities, where hotels know customers are looking for last-minute deals, Berg says that competition to fill inventory can yield deals. “If you’re flexible, this is a great way to save,” Berg said. “But you do … need to be able to go with whatever the lowest price is available, which might not be on the street you want or have a pool or have a suite room available.”

A Christmas hotel will also stretch your budget this year, because rates are up 14 percent from 2021, to an average of $202 per night for a room, Hopper says. Your hotel rate will vary significantly based on when you check in, however.

The best deals can be found by arriving two or three days before Christmas, according to Hopper. If you can’t make that work, checking in on Christmas Day can save you 11 percent over Christmas Eve.

Room prices are highest the week between Christmas and New Year’s, according to Hopper, with prices rising about $30 per night after Dec. 27. On Dec. 30 or New Year’s Eve, a room will cost you $50 per night more. Hopper recommends making a hotel reservation for Christmas by the first week of December, unless you are flexible to look for a last-minute deal.

How to find cheap holiday vacation rentals

Both demand and prices for short-term vacation rentals around the holidays are up from last year, according to AirDNA , which tracks the industry.

Thanksgiving and Christmas week prices are up by 7 percent and 9 percent, respectively, from 2021, according to AirDNA. That tracks with a double-digit increase in demand for rentals during both holidays, with “guests getting their bookings in early now there’s a little more certainty than last year,” the company said.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, consider mountain or lake properties or those in small cities and rural areas, which have seen the least growth in price since 2021, according to AirDNA. However, larger rural properties tend to charge more in the first place.

By contrast, vacation rentals in larger cities have seen the highest growth in prices since last year, with rates increasing 13 percent for Thanksgiving Day and 16 percent for Christmas Eve, per AirDNA.

Thanksgiving and Christmas cruises

Demand for cruises is “very, very high” for the holiday period, especially since cruise lines lifted coronavirus restrictions in recent months , said David Crooks, senior vice president of product and operations for World Travel Holdings.

“Mid-August, when restrictions were lifted, was the best booking period we’ve seen in our business in a couple of years,” he said.

In most years, holiday cruises are booked in June or July, but many cruise travelers are booking late this year because of pandemic uncertainty, Crooks said. That means some rooms are still available but are going fast.

Welcome aboard, unvaccinated cruise passengers

The average price for a cruise this November is up 20 percent from 2019 and more than 10 percent higher for Christmas, he said.

With flight prices surging, Crooks recommends looking for a cruise that leaves from a port within driving distance. Even though many cruises go to the Caribbean during the holiday season, they might leave from Miami, New York or Houston , he said. On the West Coast, many cruises leave from Los Angeles for Mexico during the holidays.

Holiday gas prices

Gas prices have fallen significantly since they peaked at more than $5 this June. The national average to fill up at the pump as of Oct. 31 sat at $3.76 per gallon, according to AAA . That price is 36 cents higher than a year ago but still well below summer highs.

Christmas Eve is generally a non event in Russia. If you're looking for the 'Christmas spirit', then you may find it catered for in some of the international hotels (Marriott, Hyatt, etc) and maybe in a few bars frequented by foreigners. However, everywhere else it will be just a regular day.

Hi Vlad thanks for your reply. I understand in Russia they celebrate Orthodox Christmas in January but is there any special event for Christmas on December 24th - 25th?

As stated earlier, perhaps in some Western hotels, but this is given the Orthodox nature of Christianity in Russia, their Christmas is celebrated later as indicated. But even so, there are more events - if not the vast majority - associated with New Years. I would certainly not count on going to Russia to celebrate "our/your" Christmas...does not make much sense

Easter is the focus of the Christian year in Russian Orthodox Christianity, not Christmas. Here in Saint Petersburg I noticed services at the Catholic and Protestant churches on December 24 last year, but I'm unaware of any other events. The trees and decorations seen at that time of year are related mostly to the New Year (which is a large but quite civil event by Western standards in my experience).

Googling is easy, just wanted some advice from a person who has experienced winter in moscow himself. I believe people’s personal experience more than weather.com

Temperature is objective ... it's a number you can see on weather.com or other sides. The individual experience of temperature is subjective as it changes from person to person. Eg cold weather, some people will need a full winter coat, with gloves and a scarf yet others only require a light sweater. If you know the temperature, you can easily predict for yourself how you will actually feel under certain temperature conditions. Only you will know.
